College Football Power Rankings - Big Ten & Mountain West + Florida St, Oregon St, & Washington St

it's time for the big mountain power rankings college football is back and we're back on the big mountain hey it's great to have you back on the mountain I'm JY this is my good friend Steve and we are finally into it college football season this will be our first of many college football Big Mountain Power Rankings yeah uh so just as a reminder if if you're new to the channel if you're new to the power rankings here we take all the Big 10 teams all the Mountain West teams we're going to add in FSU this year uh because we think eventually they will be a big 10 team and we're going to add in Oregon State and Washington State uh one reason because we've just kind of included them here for the past year and they have a scheduling agreement with the Mountain West so it only makes sense to have them included as well so that's 33 teams if anybody did the quick math there that we are going to power rank from weakest two strongest and we will do this every two weeks is when you will get an updated power ranking this of course is our if you want to call it preseason just before the kickoff power ranking uh anything you want to add before we get into this sucker this was a lot of fun last year we did it all last season both of us had a lot of fun with this and I think a a lot of the fans you know getting to compare Mountain West fans Big 10 fans arguing where the team should be so we have a lot of fun and I will say the power rankings the purpose of it is supposed to be right now at this snapshot in time how we think they are if if they played each other you know the team that's higher in the P Power Rankings would beat the other team so yep so let's get into it we're going to start with the group uh of 21 through 33 kind of this bottom tier uh for 21 to 33 I'll go over them real quick from the bottom up we've got New Mexico Nevada San Jose State Purdue San Diego State Northwestern UCLA Hawaii Michigan State Utah State Minnesota Maryland and then just out of of our top 20 the Colorado State Rams here Steve and overall we agreed for the most part but certainly as you get down here North near the bottom we can have some differences our biggest differences down here were Michigan State uh San Diego State and UCLA you had Michigan State and uh UCLA a bit higher than I did and I had San Diego State a bit higher than you did but overall they're within four three four of each other what what all those all three of those schools have something in common what is it um um I have no idea they have new coaches they all have new coaches so that's the thing there's a lot of volatility there we don't know exactly what to expect so it doesn't surprise me in that bottom when we agreed on most of the bottom group very closely uh but those are three teams have new coaches and you know there's some volatility there yeah I mean other than those three teams uh the Spartans the Bruins and the Aztecs we were within like one of each other for every other team so very consistent uh down here in this in this bottom group group and I think you know a lot of people I'm going to talk about Colorado State here for a little bit if there's any other team you want to talk about uh but that's a team I think you could see moving up I think uh you know several people have them as being this potentially the surprise team if you want to call them that in the Mountain West U as we get to the next group uh you know you'll talk about kind of that 18 192 area I think you could see Colorado State moving up out of this group they would you know of course they're the closest but I think they're the most likeliest at least from the Mountain West Side to kind of get up to that next year any teams here that you think that that may have some potential yeah I mean I think I think they're all pretty much ranked fairly you know Utah State we don't know what to expect there it's another one that had that last minute coaching change uh they could be a little bit better than we had them UCLA is another team you know who knows they could have some and then Northwestern last year really overachieved our expectations we both have them at 27 yeah we do but if they if they overachieve again like last year they could shoot right up and Hawaii is my surprise team lot I mentioned Colorado State's other peoples my surprise team is Hawaii yes we have them here at 26th but I think they could if they have the season I think they potentially could have I can see them getting close to 20 as well so definitely a couple teams here that we're going to keep an eye on ready to get to the next group I'm Ready's all right so we got uh 10 through actually it's 11 we have a tie for 10 to be fair but it's 11 through 20 what do we got yeah so 11 through 20 I mean this is really that quintessential middle group uh you know it's some there's some big 10 teams in there there's some Mountain West teams it's a really good mix of you know just kind of middle of the- pack teams that also could go up so um you know Indiana and Illinois we both had down in that group Washington just lost so much from last year right Air Force I think is pretty fair there we we were both pretty close on them now UNLV and Washington state was were the two of them that we were way different on uh UNLV you've been really high on UNLV and I think a lot of the Mountain West media are high on UNLV so that might be just an area where because I'm not as plugged into the Mountain West as you are maybe I have a blind spot there I had them lower and and really I mean they they have an opportunity to really jump up yeah uh Washington State just hard you know with with their everything that happened and they lo you know they lost some Talent whatever what what's what it's going to look like for this year uh and then for me the really the teams that really jump out the two teams there in that group are Ruckers and Wyoming okay I I'm sure you'll agree on Wyoming I think that they're going to beat expectations this year uh and rers I think will do will do the same um you know so a Mountain West team that will beat expectations Ruckers team that I think will beat expectations in the Big 10 and I could see either one of those teams jumping up to the next group yeah and for those two teams maybe a little bit higher on our ranking because we are high on both of those teams then probably what you would see from a national ranking standpoint or anybody that's just they're not really a big 10 or Mountain West fan they probably look at this and go you've got Ruckers at 12 and Wyoming at 13 and we go yeah we do and and we're comfortable with that um not a surprise for us but might be a surprise for some well and the funny thing is is both of those teams are if I remember correctly both of them the the Vegas has them at six and a half wins I think we we both picked the each team uh to to go over there I I Stone Cold locked Ruckers did you do that with Wyoming I couldn't remember uh I did I ice cold lock them I don't remember if I ice cold lock them that's a great question I know Ruckers yes I did of course I did Ruckers was my first Big Mountain ice cold lock I ice cold lock Wyoming too so yes no that's a very good point we're both over on the winds and we both ice cold locked them on the winds I just want to say for you and LV uh we it is our biggest spread in terms of where we both had eight a difference of eight between the rankings there uh and Washington state was the second biggest a difference of five between the rankings and I'm with you on Washington State really hard I mean I think where we have them here really smack dab in the middle of our of our ranking here at 16 is fair enough until we see what in the world's going on with with the team and the turnover and stuff still going to be a solid team I mean there's going to have a solid team um can they get up into the top 10 here I think it's going to be a real struggle for them them to do that but I'm with you if I had to pick maybe the the biggest three uh or the three that I have the most uh confiden maybe breaking into that top 10 at some point it'd be Ruckers Wyoming and for me it would be UNLV I'm not sure if you would agree with that but that's where I'm at so let's get to the next group we're going to break into our top 10 we'll do this in sections of five because I want to talk about some of these teams so as I said we had a tie for 10th we put Oregon State we put the beaves there uh at 10 I'm sorry at 11 uh but the tie team that we have is the fresner State Bulldogs in our top 10 at number 10 and then the Boise State Broncos at number nine uh Nebraska another team you were very high on uh moving into the season then Iowa and USC we have tied at sixth um you know me I'm not a big USC guy uh I did have them up in this general area um for me if I'm taking one of these five teams as maybe downward movement I would be taking USC because I don't trust them at all yes yeah no I totally get it honestly to me this is the most exciting group because I could see any of these teams if they have a really good season they could threaten to win their conference um but also like you said any of these teams if they have kind of a rough season you know Boise started kind of Rocky last year uh Nebraska was rough last year Fresno looked good all throughout the season and then kind of tailed off at the end and and Iowa had no offense last year you but managed to win 10 games somehow uh and USC like you said a lot of talent but they they just haven't you couldn't trust them the last few years the way they've dropped I think we had them maybe it was like 15th or something like I mean they by the end of our our rankings maybe down 20 they were down yeah uh so to me this group is the most exciting they could shoot up they could go down I think this group will be a lot ofun fun to watch I agree and you know here in the first two weeks we know Boise has Oregon there in week two we know Fresno has Michigan here in week one I already bake them in as losses I'm not going to have them move very much unless they get annihilated and you're like what did they put on the field which I don't anticipate that happening even then I don't yeah so I don't see that having an effect I am interested in the Nebraska Colorado game because I think if Nebraska is going to be the team that you think they can be and they have a slip up at Colorado that's going to kind of it's for me it's going to kind of reset maybe where I think they're at it's going to be a good indicator now they can lose in Nebraska and still have all of their goals in front of them in the Big 10 for sure but I think as far as like how you view them it'll C it would certainly take take a big hit losing Colorado all right Steve we're at the top five you ready I'm ready let's do it okay so I'm I'm looking at this and I think we agree yeah 100% we were 100% agreement and and again for our our viewers we didn't really coordinate at all on this I did mine Jason did his we AED J um you know his were he did his second but his were basically um just like mine y so we came out uh so we both have Michigan Fifth and here's the thing um you know Michigan defending national champions I'm sure if we have any Michigan viewers are gonna be like that's bull crap you know we're the king of the mountain till we get knocked off well they let us lost so much with coaching and all that stuff um it's hard to expect like you just you know they're still going to be good like they still have a good defense they have a good roster they have some of their coaching in place but we just don't know are they going to be that elite team so we have them at the bottom of the top category I think it makes sense the next two teams Penn State and Florida State right there I really struggled with Penn State and Florida State um and so I decided to go back because I was really struggling with it I decided to go back to my we did our our top 25 rankings recently and I had Penn State ahead of Florida State but honestly those two teams are a coin flip uh and then at the top it's just it's you know so easy to go there Ohio State and Oregon that's all the national media is on them everybody's on them both have absolutely loaded rosters really easy at the top to go and and so to me this top five group is kind of boring okay because it's just they're blue bloods they recruit well everybody knows they're going to be be good um they're not as it's not as much fun there as seeing what happens with that second group agree and you know of any of them Michigan uh is the one that I think we would see most likely drop out of out of this but I will say I mean both Penn State and Florida State Penn State's got WVU here in week one we'll see what kind of showing they have I think that spread is around 10 right now at last I checked um and Florida State you know obviously they're in Dublin they have Georgia Tech and that's again around the spread is around 10 I know Florida State fans I'm seeing a lot of 20 30 you know spreads that they think they're going to win by um but I will say I think if the Penn State game vice versa if one game's close and one game's a blowout win yeah uh for these two teams uh that would help solidify for me early on in the season where these two teams actually are um I don't see either of them probably falling out of uh the top five and you know we had I think was it three or four number ones last year we had a whole rotation of of different schools I'm not sure I mean with Ohio State and Oregon being the team teams that we think they are I'm not sure we see much rotation of our number ones here uh but you know we'll wait and see maybe I'm I could see I could see cuz last year we had some flip-flopping um trying to remember between Washington and Oregon maybe we had Washington we had Michigan we had Ohio State and I think we may have had Oregon for maybe one one week so we had flip-flopping between four teams this year I think we could have some flip-flopping between two teams sure right yeah so like you said a little less fun maybe when when when it's potentially that solidified at the top of the mountain here but we'll see you know uh so Penn State has uh there I think it's the end of September they travel to USC so you already mentioned the West Virginia game and say travels to USC um Florida State I they have an early game I think with Miami a lot of people are real hyped on Miami so we'll see how that goes so both of them I think will have some tests early to see do they belong at some point Florida State plays um also plays Notre Dame uh they play Clemson obviously so there'll definitely be some tests both of but but I agree with you those two teams I think we'll probably just see hang around there right I think we both had them picked to be you know win nine to 10 games um Michigan is the one in this group that like they could drop like a rock or you know they've beaten Ohio State the last three years in a row at the end of the season they could be back to being number one again defending national champion we'll see or like I wouldn't be surprised if they were number one I wouldn't be surprised if they dropped to out of the top 10 you know it's they're the one in that group that I think has the most volatility I I completely agree with you so hey we're gonna throw all the slides back up again uh from 33 all the way back up to 1 to R remind you where we're at here on our preseason Big Mountain Power [Music] Rankings all right there you have it we are so excited to have college football back we will be watching ing a ton of college football this weekend we're sure you will as well make sure you give us
