it's the NFL on EA Sports where we'll see two of the NFL's oldest and most storied franchises it's the Los Angeles Rams and the Detroit Lions and it's kicking off next on Madden NFL 25 downtown between Brush Street and I 375 that's where we're located in the heart of Detroit at Ford Field which first opened back in 2002 Brandon gard and Charles with you from our broadcast perch and Charles as we get this thing started what are you going to be keeping your eye on special teams field position is always a big determiner in a ball game who sets their offense up for Success the best that team will win the game [Applause] the punter Jack fox has us ready to go and we are underway here at Ford Field oh a good return up past the 30 and he nearly broke that for more but as it is still a good return they'll start the drive right around the 37th so out come the Rams now for their first possession they're Led Out by someone who needs no introduction to these Lions their quarterback for 12 seasons and the franchise's most prolific passer with over 45,000 yards and nearly 300 touchdowns it's Matthew Stafford line of scrimmage the 37 on First and 10 a first run now for kyen Williams and if there was a lane there it closed up quickly as he stopped for No Gain second down as usual the Hallmark of a good run defense linebackers making plays near the line of scrimmage absolutely nowhere to run there second and 10 to throw is Stafford oh he brings it in off the deflection and this will be good for a pickup of nine to the 46 brand that's just not right you throw it over the middle into all that coverage and the tip ball goes your way dangerous but hey I guess the outcome worked right the boy did it ever and boy that's the type of play that can give a team a lot of momentum they'll try and run for it here's Williams and he's got enough for the first across Midfield to the 48 and hold on here cuz on that last run it looks like we have a player who was shaken up the medical staff will attend to him and we will step aside [Applause] now it's Stafford off the boot L to the right side in complete to Atwell two yds on the pickup there at it's second [Applause] down the shotgun snap for Stafford and it's incomplete and that's a knowledge game from being in this league for a long time he's learned the hard way when to give up and fight another down and that's a smart move to throw it away they'll need to get this to the 38 that's where the first down marker is here on third now Stafford that'll be caught by cup and he'll be taken down but he does have first down yardage a strong eight yds will keep this drive rolling didn't they tell us in our meetings that they needed to account for him on each and every play you think a guy of his caliber so how does a guy like him get that wide open that usually means there's a tire breakdown on what the coverage was that everyone thought they were doing something and they were supposed to be doing something else but bottom line is no matter what you have to know where he is and cover him on every play they'll run here's the rookie from Michigan and he'll get it inside the 35 give credit to the defense for stringing that play out and they gave up no cut back angle you know he was trying to Dart through no place for him to go a nice job there only giving up a three yd gain second and seven operating from the 34 from the gun here's Stafford open man right side is cup complete and just three yds on the catch there he couldn't get away and that'll bring us to a third and four and he's already got two catches on the opening drive they know he's going to be a handful and sometimes you game plan for that offensively you want to make sure that guy touches the ball and sometimes it just happens naturally and then you change your game plan when he has the hot hand you keep going back to him because he's running routes with confidence as the game goes on work to the middle of the field that he's got a man complete and he'll be taken down but he does have first down yardage call it a gain of seven and it gets him a new set of downs solid opening drive so far Charles they mooved this football into field goal range but you know that they want to cap this off with six and not three absolutely as one of the better coaches in the league always tells me on off def I want to throw body blows all game long and finish it with uppercuts well here are the body blows right now he's hoping in one uppercut will take care of the end of this drive an excellent pickup of 20 yds a lot of precision being shown on this opening drive they've been methodical they've been Crisp And as a reward they're going to be set up with an early first and goal first and goal a chance for an early statement here on the road throwing again as Stafford and it's complete he's got it in the end zone touchdown Rams two2 Atwell from four yds out and the Rams will jump on top with a game's first score here this afternoon well down here I thought they were going to hand that off instead a well-designed play and the pitch and catch for the touchdown and I wonder who came up with it was it a call from the bench did the quarterback have a good idea and suggest it in any event clearly an effective play call they saw something they liked in coverage and they targeted it for the short yardage throw and the perfect way to cap and now of course all scoring plays are reviewed and I think they're going to take an extra long look at this one they're taking a peek at whether or not those feet were in bounds and obviously a big call here in the end zone and not just the feet how about the hands how is the ball possessed while the feet are hopefully getting down in bounds that's what they're trying to look at to see if it all comes together so they called it a touchdown originally and this will stay a touchdown after the video review so they had it right now the try here for the extra point it's up it's good and the Rams take a seven nothing lead a pretty long drive that time 11 plays all told and it winds up with a touchdown for Los Angeles set now to kick this one away and off it [Applause] goes and a nice return sets him up pretty good here right at the 30 yd line how come the Lions for their first drive behind their ninth year quarterback in year number four with Detroit it's Jared gof it's hardly an exaggeration to say that gof has revitalized his career these last couple of years and he's rewarded for it during the off season as Detroit has certainly made sure everyone knows he's their quarterback for the future it's clear that they believe in him and he's done nothing to sway them from that belief gof in this Lions offense set for a first and 10 right at the 30 and they'll send the tight end in motion here playaction it's G oh he was hit as he threw it there and that one winds up incomplete partner what we're seeing so far is a defense is certainly coordinated both levels doing their jobs in tandem the back helping the front the front helping the back the pressure got home on that last play and forced him to try and throw through contact and short of the sticks they'll fake the give now G and the Rams got him they bring him down multiple players combined for their team's first sack of the game all right partner I'm going to be Captain Obvious right here not the start you're looking for offensively right incomplete pass followed by a sack and when he went down it looked like that right ankle got turned but thankfully he popped up okay and they breath the Sigh relief on that sideline so now following the sack Goten the Lions needing to come up with something here on Third and long now on Third and long they'll look to throw setting up the screen this is Gibbs and this play going to be stopped in its tracks at the 32 and obviously well short of the first down they'll get eight but they're going to have to punt here on the opening drive because that's not enough and that's a play that's not uncommon on Third and long because the offense is just hoping that somehow they can get a guy in space and follow some blockers down field does a pretty nice job there getting a few yards but he ends up getting stopped before he get the first down and a fair catch signal for and taken just outside the 20yd line so possession goes over here on the punt and the Rams will go on offense here with a first and 10 [Applause] Stafford now to [Music] throw pass complete there to NCA and he's going to get this one across the 30 yd line a gain of 11 to kick off the drive and it's a quick first down someone sharp in this game I made a touchdown pass on the first drive and comes right back and he's flinging it around really well here really nice throw there to pick up the first down you kind of just feel a laser focus and confidence about him and I think we saw that this week didn't we talking to him and the coaches they felt good about his performance coming up hey I was really impressed with that last practice we saw when they went through two-minute drill when they went through all the different situations ball hardly hit the ground and I thought yeah he might be locked in for this one and that one results in 35 yards well partner I'm not sure how this drive is going to end but how about the way they flip field position there a nice attacking play they picked up a heck of a chunk of [Applause] yardage so the ball moves into lion territory now here's first and 10 at the 32 yd line throwing a Stafford that'll be caught it's C and they move this all the way down to the nine great gains back to back last time over 30 yds better than 20 here how about the way they're moving the ball down the field they had a big play a moment ago followed up with another nice one here and before you know it they're already looking at first and goal so three plays already first and goal and they are wasting little time Stafford looks to throw again firing quickly here and that's complete touchdown Rams Matthew Stafford two touchdown passes in this first quarter and the Rams have taken a 13 to nothing first quarter lead well this has been a Flawless start for them they score they get the Stop and they score again Charles complimentary football at its finest you just mentioned how they got it done they scored the defense got the ball back for them they scored again that's the way you win ball games no going for two they'll kick the point [Applause] after and it's good and they have jumped out here to a quick 14 nothing first quarter lead just a Fourplay drive that time and the result for the Rams a touchdown [Applause] out is the kickoff unit as they run up and send this one away and he's up across the 25 and down at the 28 back onto the field come the Lions for their second overall Drive they find themselves in a good size hole here and a good size hole early on in this game as they come up on first down come on now G that's caught it's Sam leapor and he slips up past the 45 before being tackled a quick first down pickup good start after going three and out on their opening drive you can almost hear the sigh of relief coming from their sideline and from their point on the field because this has been a tough start for them thus far a much needed first down there they needed something good to happen play play like that will continue to help him dig out of this hole a big hitter to start the drive has him up near Midfield here for first and 10 Gibbs straight ahead and a good push there defensively as they stop him at the 48 gain of just one oh there's plenty of traffic waiting for him up the middle but give him credit he tried barreling through anyway they're fortunate to get a yard out of that one second and nine [Applause] back to the ground this time Montgomery and a pretty athletic run right there as he's going to get this down inside the 40 he'll get a dozen there and the Lions have a first down well you're down early how do you get back in the game maybe establish the run I think they're trying to do that now I'm with you on that one and what I like about the message is that there's no Panic from the head coach he's already told his offensive coordinator let's run the Football let's get things settled down a little bit and find our way back into this game open man is Raymond he's got it and he is out of bounds but not before he's inside the 30 it's a pick up of 12 second play in a row with a 12 yd gain that's probably as simple of a throw as he'll have all game and good for everyone good for his completion percentage good for the receptions for the receivers but you know how they work on that they have football with no laces so that as soon as you get the snap you're just throwing the football all right you're not trying to find the laces and grip it a certain way that takes time just get the ball and throw it so that's how they practice it all the time now too second quarter action now from Detroit and it's the hom standing Lions who have the football as they've got it with a first and 10 in motion goes Raymond gof now to throw throw caught by Raymond and he doesn't quite make it taking it within an eyelash dropped at the one that'll be marked as a 27 yd pickup well theyve certainly not shied away from throwing the football as they've leaned on their quarterback to start this game four straight passes right out of the gate with that last one earning them a new set of downs [Applause] first and goal and they got to be thinking a chance to get right back into this football game Montgomery he is going nowhere in a hurry as he is going to lose yardage here in a big way a loss of a full three yards and now it's second down this is a critical sequence here for this offense things really haven't gone their way so far this could could be their chance to get back into it but they've got to find a way to punch this ball in now G and in for the Lions touchdown Sam lorta from four yds out and the Lions have cut it back within a score well that's just how they drew it up CD his first read was there got it to him quickly and into the end zone absolutely excellent execution by all involved and the coordinator got to give him credit found the perfect play call quarterback Let it Fly as soon as the target came free and his guy made a nice catch just how you draw it up in practice and then execute it in the game extra point attempt to come here and that one makes it 14 seven so this drive spans seven plays and the end result a Detroit [Applause] [Applause] touchdown this game came back with it a touchdown now as the kick offs [Applause] away and the tackle going to be made right there at the 25 yd line the Rams offense and Matthew Stafford heading back out he's got two touchdown passes on his first two drives and he'll try again here on drive three Stafford he's going to Loft one deep left side here that's caught inside the 20 and he is able to take this way down into Detroit territory a big play there for La 56 yards I'll tell you what this is not going to be a fun discussion at halftime for this defense they've been absolutely taken advantage of in the first half and here's another play for big big yardage a real field flipper there as all of a sudden they've got a first down in the red zone out of the gun Stafford that's quickly to Atwell on the slam touchdown two2 Atwell with his second touchdown here in this first half and the Rams are able to strike quickly to add on to their lead well just a sensational start for this offense Charles three drives three passing touchdowns is that like mentioning a perfect game in baseball are we cool to do it here in football partner no I think you can do it here in football I think perfect game in baseball that that's its own category yeah I think you're right about that could not imagine a worse start for that secondary or let's face it a better one for this offense no chance they stop passing now the way that it's going I think they could continue to press the ball down field and hopefully reap the same results extra point right down the middle and it's now 21 to7 [Applause] the kickoff team on the field now as they will send this one [Applause] away and he brings this out past the 20 to the 24 Detroit's offense ready to take over a strong showing their last time out they scored the touchdown but Charles they look up and they're still down double digits so you feel like just to keep Pace this drive probably needs to end in the end zone as well yeah I think the best move for them is to not worry about how far they are down on the scoreboard but to just remember the last drive and how it ended go ahead and try and repeat that then you can look at the scoreboard and see where this game is they'll bring a receiver in motion left to throw is gone oh into a sea of Defenders had intercepted and they are going to take over right there at the 22 yd line that throw Charles over the middle of the field and few too many bodies in there got picked that's a normal situation too isn't it no matter how hard you try and spread the field sometimes there's always going to be a traffic jam it feels like towards the middle and if there's any type of a Miss throw or maybe the ball's tipped or just too many bodies in the area an interception can result here's the Los Angeles offense as they get set to take possession they'll have good field position here following the interception and a chance to build on their lead as they start with a first and [Applause] 10 after the interception here's Stafford and it's incomplete took a shot couldn't connect I see the surpris in your face there partner that is a rare incompletion from him he's been on point this entire game he has percentage completion Wise Way up not that time now a second and 10 back to throw Stafford over the middle in complete to the tight end higgy nine yds and that leaves him just short so it'll be third and less than a yard and he's the epitome of what we call the move tight end a guy that you can line up anywhere in the slot out wide in tight doesn't really matter because he has such great skills you want to utilize him in all aspects of your passing offense and there he was in the slot for the catch and he's got the first down as he gets it to the eight a gain of four that time as the drive continues most of damage has been done through the air I mean they've rung the Bell three times with passing touchdowns but guess what ground game has not been neglected nice little burst right there this offense continues to be a hot night through butter three drives three scores and knocking on the door again on Drive Number Four now Stafford it's caught on the right side Williams so he stopped for no gain and it'll bring up a second and goal as a defense you're more balanced when you're in zone coverage because you're able to keep your eyes on the quarterback and see the play develop in front of you they're able to keep the Quick Pass in front of them and stop it right at the line of scrimmage nothing on first down so the ball remains at the8 yd line second and goal up the middle it's Williams and he will maneuver his way down to about the seven the second down play not much better than the first just a gain of one there were you as surprised as I was that they actually ran it on second down there I thought that they would go ahead and throw it in every situation here yeah they've thrown for three touchdown passes now here I think they probably go back to the air yeah I think so but ordinarily second down is when you're your play fake your play action Show run and throw the ball now they brought up third down they allowed to throw it anyway he's got it it's higgy touchdown Rams fourth touchdown pass of the game for Matthew Stafford and the Rams have moved out in front by three touchdowns no surprise there third and goal down here that's where they're going to look for their tight end yeah you want that big guy running his routes cuz it doesn't matter who who they cover him with if it's another big guy he might use his bulk against him if it's a shorter Defender might go over the top either way you tend to find a little bit of a mismatch in that area the call is to go for one and kick the extra [Applause] point he knocks it through it's 287 a drive that time of six plays and it winds up with a touchdown for Los Angeles [Applause] the Rams kickoff team on the field and here we go with the ball B in the air and he won't quite make it to the 25 the Lions offense set to take over and for this offense Charles you got to think kind of crucial here to put something together on this drive cuz remember last time out they threw the interception on the very first play and you can't afford to let this defense keep building any more momentum they're playing awfully well and they're awfully confident right now to me it's time to attack and take some of that momentum back but make sure you're selective in doing so understand where you want to throw the football and make sure it's open before the ball leaves your hands and that's hauled in by St Brown over the middle and he takes this up to the 40 yd line before being coralled 17 yds on the catch and run it's a first down and I don't think there's any question that this offense is going to need to hit on a few more plays like this it's been a difficult first half for them to say the least and I do believe if they want to get back in this game they need to start right now it's kind of like making adjustments if you try and wait until the half it's probably too late they need to get going right here that one twoo wide and incomplete and a smart play there he's probably saying I wish I would have done that on the last Drive instead of throwing the [Applause] interception here's second and 10 they'll send a receiver in motion to the left gof now looks to throw that is caught by Lea and this is going to be another first down as the tackle is going to be made at the Rams 41 yd line 19 yds the pick up there move the chains now that's the kind of big play you'd like to see this first half it hasn't gone their way and they could use a shot in the arm something to perk them up a bit and they get one here in the passing game they'll bring a receiver in motion left they'll fake the handoff now G throws out left it's caught by Williams and they went the wrong way there losing yardage back at the 43 yd line throwing again is G oh everything falling apart now another one intercepted travius white with a pick and the Rams are going to take over here up near the 40 it certainly feels like this defensive group has figured this guy out to the tune of a big lead in this one and you know that he's frustrated with how this game is gone and now with backto back interceptions he's got to find a way to get out of his own head and start making better plays and now out on the field Here Comes Los Angeles everything right now that they touch on this side of the football it seems to turn to Gold they've scored on three straight possessions that lead continues to grow and I mean if they can get points here Charles might almost be an insurmountable comeback for the other side I think you make a great case for that so I'm going to flip it over to the other side could they make the big comeback certainly am I expecting it not at all I think if we don't see a drastic change and how they're playing this blowout is going to get bigger and bigger before the final gun open man is Atwell complete this will be stopped about two yd shy of the marker 8yd gain second and two and his play caller does a nice job of giving him an easy throw to start this drive and he takes advantage of it the completion sets up a manageable second down they don't need to run another play here before the two-minute warning let's see if they do it anyway now a give up the middle to Williams and nowhere to run on the interior of that defensive line he'll get back only to the line of scrimmage no gain on the play as we have reached the two-minute warning two yds still to go third down [Applause] now to throw is Stafford work in the middle of the field and he's got him man complete and he is going to have a Rams first down and comfortably so as he gets five there on Third and a yard that's a big conversion there on third down because they did not want to give the ball up here late in the half they'd love to take the clock all the way down and score this will defin Ely help the [Applause] cause now Stafford going to be taken in here by nula the result only four yds there on the play and that's going to bring up second down [Applause] from the gun here's Stafford and an incomplete pass that'll stop the clock here with just under a minute to play in half number one he didn't just deny a big throw there he broke that one up in the Red Zone an excellent play one that may help save points on the board when this drive is over and the line to gain here is the 37 on third down [Applause] Stafford now to throw able to find the open man that's complete and they'll get this to the 30 yd line before crossing over out of bounds Stafford to cup there for a Rams first down let's just call it what it is this has been a Flatout struggle for this defense all game long they've really had a hard time slowing them down and while I'm not big on speeches and guys jumping up and down they might need their team team leader on defense to get in their face right now and light a fire under these guys they've got to start playing better assignment football and start getting guys on the ground a shotgun snap for Stafford short throw it's higgy and inside the 20 before he's brought down back to back nice gains that one for 14 yds and another first now a timeout called for by the offense as the clock stops here with 46 seconds remaining in the first half [Applause] so the ball down to the 16 here for first and [Applause] 10 to the air again Stafford he'll get that complete to Parkinson and out of bounds all the way down at the three another nice gain 13 yds that time and another first down just picked going up yardage in bunches here these last few plays they have moved right down the field and just like that they're can be set up with a first and goal a chance to really cap off a big first half here as they come up on first and goal Stafford and that is I think he caught it he did but they'll say out of bounds it'll be incomplete not too many missteps in the Red Zone thus far he was going for his fifth touchdown pass his man couldn't shake free there but boy you know he's going to take another shot before this one's over yeah exactly cuz I believe they buzzed down they're going to take another look at this play with all reviews coming from the replay official here in the final two minutes of the half they're taking a peek at whether or not those feet were in bounds and obviously a big call here in the end zone and not just the feet how about the hands how's the ball possessed while the feet are hopefully getting down in bounds that's what they're trying to look at to see if it all comes [Applause] together out comes the kicking team here for the extra [Applause] point and he's been a busy man five for five now as he knocks another one through to extend the lead that time a nine playay drive and the result for the Rams a touchdown [Applause] [Music] the Rams kickoff team on the field and here we go with a ball in the air and they will Wrangle him down a couple yards shy of the 30 the Lions now taking over late in this first half and with a score where it is even though I think they'd love to get back to the locker room they may be forced to try and get something out of this drive just over 30 seconds to go in the half they've got it first and 10 trying to shake off the interception from the last Drive he'll look to throw the Lions will use the first of their timeouts as the clock will stop with just under 30 seconds to go in the first [Applause] half second down and three on it's ridic they'll bring a receiver in motion right gof now to throw and that'll be caught by St Brown the Lions now going to use the second of their timeouts so that means they're down to one remaining here as we head toward halftime [Applause] go g looking left side and he's got a man that's Gibbs nothing on that one it'll be second down that's a nice job defensively to make sure everyone was accounted for because ordinarily you pick up the guys down field and sometimes you forget about the running back in this case they did not and dropped him for no gain from the gun here's gone and the Rams got him they bring him down the Lions quickly now going to use the last of their timeouts as they stop it with 19 seconds to go in half number one [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] so now following the sack Goten the Lions needing to come up with something here on Third and long not wanting to risk another sack they'll play it safe with a run and they'll indeed stop him on third down and now what do you want to do with your timeouts [Applause] Jack fox out to punt here on fourth down 46 on his first kick this one in that neighborhood as well so a change of possession here on the punt and control of the football switching hands with very little time remaining until the half [Applause] the LA offense ready to go for their next drive and with eight seconds on the clock really not a lot of time to try to put anything together and an anxious moment or two there but they do get him down so we've come to halftime it's the visiting Rams taking the lead to the break as we'll send you down to Orlando and we check in with Jonathan Coachman for our EA Sports half time report coach the highlights from the first half all onesided this one got out of hand early and now you have to wonder how these teams will approach this second half cuz this one's already close to being the bag if it's not already all right coach thank you very much as we welcome you back for quarter number three the kickoff unit is out on the field and they will send this one [Applause] away and he'll go down as this drive will start at the 25 yd line and the Lions getting set to go on offense to start the [Applause] third gof in this Lions offense set for a first and 10 at their 25 yd line he'll Begin by dropping it off to Montgomery and able to break one tackle but then quickly brought down but a nice little gain now that was an excellent run and when you see that happen that's when you're seeing guys doing their job and then some people doing a little bit more offensive lineman and tight ends they're expected to block but the wide receivers all they want to do is catch passes so when they block on a big time running play and create extra space you've kind of hit the jackpot there and he'll be brought down shy of the 40 at the 38 yd line line four yds the pickup first down second and inches is often times an invitation for an offense coordinator to take a big shot down field because he feels like he can come back on third down and pick up the first down but sometimes you just don't want to break tendency stay with what you are stay with who you know and go get the first down that's exactly what they did now a play fake and it's G and he finds a man with a Crossing Round And he's tackled a yard short of the marker good gain of nine on first down and I think he just wanted to give the ball to one of his Playmakers to see if they can make something happen but he ends up throwing into a crowded area and after the catch he isn't able to do much with it second down in a little more than a yard here here's G and he drops it incomplete and their struggles continue here when you run in the slant timing is every everything and against that man coverage there was no space available and incompletion as a result they tried to throw on second down unsuccessful now it's third and one they'll run it here's Montgomery and taking it across Midfield and inside the 45 it's a gain of 10 for the Lions and a first down despite the score despite the the deficit no quitting this guy he's running angry running through arm tackles he wants to change what that scoreboard is saying so from Rams territory now it's first and 10 at the 43 they'll send a receiver in motion left throw over the middle he finds Williams and the result here a pick up of eight leaves him with two to go on second down was that a designed pass or what was that it was built into the play call he had the opportunity to either hand it inside keep it himself to run it or do what he just did throw that pass inside hitting a receiver on the Run Williams a man in motion right finding Williams once more complete and this is going to be another first down as the tackle is going to be made at the Rams 23 it's a gain of 11 yds that time and it produces a new set of [Applause] [Applause] Downs off play action here's G right's got it and down inside the 15 shot TI of the 10 12 more yards there and another first down he's certainly done a nice job spreading the field on this drive and here he finds his big tight end for good yardage and that's what you have to do keep defenses guessing about where you're going to go with the football now a first and 10 at the 11 to throw is G throw left side complete that's Gibbs and they'll get him down after a pick up of Eight Second and two and it hit size he's a smaller back you can get him the football he can kind of get lost make someone Miss it's good for him yeah it's great for him I like what you said there sometimes he gets lost in the traffic a little bit but get him out in the open field into some space that's plays to his strengths the best and keeps him out of where all the big boys are you know makeing make someone Miss in the open field and he'll only get a yard to bring up third and one well this defense theyve got the four score advantage and you can see why they continue to bottle up the Run game and really they've just been sharp in all facets here in this one CD yeah they've kept that offense in check the entire game and I think it's been led by what you just talked about that defensive front which has not allowed them to run the football and establish control of the line of scrimmage oh Montgomery just unable to twist free as they hit him short of the line to gain tough sledding they lose a yard there on third this defense is just flat getting after it they have not given up much of anything in the Run game case in point right [Applause] there they're going to go for now fourth and two remember they can still get the first down at the one yd line though they go ahead and snap it gone there's rort and he's got it touchdown Lions a great effort there a beast in the Red Zone with his second touchdown out of the game and the Lions decision to go for it pays off with six points and Charles they continue to have trouble stopping him as he's into the end zone yet again yeah that's multiple series now they've ended with him in the end zone a perfect plan on how to utilize him best when they get in close now the extra point try forth [Applause] coming it's good and it's now 3514 so that drive 12 plays in length and it's capped off by a touchdown for the Lions [Music] here are the Lions now as they line up and kick this one [Applause] away and able to take it past the 25 and up to the 28 yd line the Rams offense and Matthew Stafford set to take over once again and as we show you some of the highlights from earlier he has been instrumental in getting his guys the lead as he looks to finish strong and close this one [Applause] out set to begin their next Drive the Rams offense at the line and they were terrific in the first half built up a sizable lead it's just been cut into a bit following the opening drive score on the other side but this is a unit that has to be itching to get the football again you can say that again they've got to be pretty eager because let's face it they've had to sit through halftime then sit on the sidelines and watch that drive so you can B that they're saying let's get on with this we got to go out there and get some more points you know on these types of plays we're always looking to assess blame okay where did it break down sometimes it's just a great play [Applause] now following the sack they'll look to make amends on a second down and 17 now a handoff here's Williams they'll get four back there on the run but now they're looking up at a third and 12 situation the way things have gone in this one the running game has been something of an afterthought and that's not been too bad for them has it yeah the offensive returns have been good but I guess we figured he in the ground game would be a bit more involved they need 12 here it's third down Stafford and the Lions pressure too strong down he goes the pressure from multiple guys there as they bury him for a big nyd loss and no matter what the situation the o line just hates that because they feel like they didn't protect little brother back there right yeah and that's just so difficult for them because just think about every single play when you decide to throw the football you're dealing with some of the best athletes on the planet you talk about guys that they weren't playing football they'd be starring in the NBA a power forward it's really difficult task here comes the Rams punter now and the way this offense has moved the ball he hasn't been needed till here in the [Applause] third it'll be a 39 yd punt no return and the lions will take over over and Detroit getting set to go now high point in this game Charles if they're going to try to pull off an impressive comeback it has to start right here right now yeah now they've got a final chance to get out of this situation but they also understand they've got to move the ball and move it fast in addition they need to save as much time so they can get two more possessions so good starting field position for him here as they come up first and 10 at their own 44 [Applause] now G oh hit as he throws there incomplete I think he had to unload that one before he wanted to he was right up in his grill I think he was a dentist there without a license don't you just not enough time for the play to develop just lucky it wasn't a fumble really so second and 10 now here in the third quarter from Detroit the tight end in motion right now G this to Le pora right side and he's able to take it across Midfield before going out of bounds nine yds and that leaves him just short so it'll be third and less than a yard I know sometimes we can get fooled when we watch him make catches as we just saw him do there because he really looks like a wide receiver the way he goes about his business yeah 230 240 range yeah not not super huge maybe not counted on to be that inline point of attack blocker that we used used to have in the good old days but you can Flex him out you can run wide receiver routes with him you can make him a primary target and that's how he'll shred a defense [Music] [Applause] [Applause] in motion goes Raymond again G this one swung out to Montgomery this will be stopped about two yds shy of the marker 8yd gain second and two caught that look from you there partner I think we're in the same page on that one just his first catch I think we both thought he'd be a little more active in the passing game less see if that's the start of them trying to get the ball to him a little bit more here in the second half they'll try the Middle with Montgomery and he'll work free from one tackle but that's about all as he's taken down just a couple on the pickup there and now it's third down he's definitely tough to get down we just saw it right there but how about what we did see Pursuit wrap up and then the big finish with the tackle open man right side is St Brown and he'll be taken down but he does have first down yardage the drive stays alive a third down gain of eight but with the score where it is you're not thinking field goals right now you need touchdowns so that was a much needed conversion there on third down they'll run with Montgomery and he'll be taken down after a minimal pickup and that will take us to the end of quarter number three three quarters in the books this is the National Football League on EA Sports back now at Ford Field a lot of folks starting to make their way to the parking lot their guys Trail big here to begin quarter number four from the two now second and goal they hand off to their big tight end trying to keep those big legs turnning but he's going to go down in the back field it'll go as a loss of a yard and it'll set up third down I like the idea to mix it up from time to time cuz let's face it you can't be predictable but the execution was a little lacking on this one right they might want to go back to the draw board with that call now gof on Third and goal and that is caught touchdown Detroit Jared G to Alan Ross St Brown and the Lions have got it back to a two-score game here in the fourth so a little bit of a let down there defensively I mean look you're still two scores to the good CD but things may be a little more uncomfortable than they had hoped yeah if you'd kept them out of the end zone there this game's over you've locked the door on them instead it's still open a little bit and they've got a puncher's chance now they'll line up to kick the extra point and the lead will be cut down to 14 a good drive that time as they go nine plays in B and the end result a Detroit touchdown [Music] here are the Lions now as they line up and kick this one [Applause] away and it's a pretty good return here as he'll get this up to the 29 now the Rams offense getting the football back and as we look back at how we got here you'll notice a common theme in these highlights a lot of yardage through the air the passing game has been sharp right from the outset [Applause] the Los Angeles offense set to begin their next drive now all of a sudden we've got an interesting game here you just saw them go down and score a touchdown and what was able lead at halime it's down to a two-score game and so the obvious thought is they've got to ramp things back up again got to get the offense into high gear but we've seen this before when you've kind of been in shut down mode for a while thinking that you're okay it's hard to mash the gas again and have everything work perfectly they've got to Fashion together a good drive right here and now CU defensively got to be feeling confident they haven't allowed a point this half here's Stafford over the middle that's hauled in by cup and able to get this one across the 45 before he's brought down Stafford to his number one guy cup for a Los Angeles first partner I like that they're staying aggressive on offense because to me this drive is what is known as a putaway drive you score here that might put this one to bed I like the fact that they're playing with confidence and not playing with fear now a first down carry it's Williams just a yard on the first down carry so it's second and nine Brandon I've got to think this offensive line has got some Smiles on its faces and and I know it sounds crazy but they practiced for this back in training camp they knew they'd be in situations where it' be extra defenders in the Box coming after them trying to keep them from locking down a game right now they want to show the world they're up to the challenge now Stafford and his throw is incomplete that incompletion certainly makes this upcoming third down a little bit more crucial they need to find the right play to convert here and maybe start to Tamp down a little bit of the momentum the other side is starting to gain the Rams on third down they've been outstanding seven first downs and eight tries this is third and nine here's Stafford that is caught he's got a first and maybe more touchdown Rams Matthew Stafford does it again five touchdown passes and the Rams have pretty well put it away here in the fourth quarter he's got them out now to a three-score lead here in the fourth quarter after that one CD and well he looked right off the line like he knew that that ball was coming his way and he secured it for six points yeah and I think when you're leading by a healthy margin already it actually loosens you up and allows you to take maybe a few more chances and definitely play with more confidence cuz he certainly saw something he could exploit in the defense and he made sure to let his quarterback know just get it to and the rest was all up to him and he delivered and made it a three-score [Applause] game point after right down the middle and the lead now to three touchdowns at 21 five plays there on that drive and it winds up with a touchdown for Los Angeles [Applause] [Music] [Applause] the Rams kickoff team on the field and here we go with a ball in the air and he's up across the 25 and down at the 28 so out now come the line Lions we said it at halftime that they would need a nearly perfect second half to erase that deficit that they were facing cidd but unfortunately the second half has pretty much been a carbon copy of the first yeah that early lead was almost insurmountable the way their opponent was playing and partner they do have some good news though this one is getting close to being over and they can try and hit the reset button starting tomorrow here's G that's complete to the Porter and he gets this one just shy of the 40 down at the 39 the drive starting with a first down 11 yards on that pickup those are the types of plays they probably wish they had made more of in the first three quarters and this deficit going to be tough to overcome here in the fourth but a nice first down and a pickup on that throw yeah and this is where as coaches you're looking for effort and execution even though the scoreboard is going against you you want to find out who's going to fight who's going to scrap who's going to keep their heads up and continue to play a good first down call as the screen play gets him nine and good yardage there on first down because sometimes all you need to do on the screen is get one key block that might set your man free and that was pretty good pursuit to the football defensively or it could have gone for more ball on the 47 yd line here's second down and a yard back to throw G that pass caught it's Williams and this is is going to be another first down as the tackle is going to be made at the Rams 30 23 yds the pickup there well I can put my defensive cap on right now and I know they're saying don't give up any big plays now they've controlled this game throughout and all they want to do is see it through to the end I think they let their guard down a little bit with that last completion sometimes when you're trying not to give up bigger plays you don't react as fast as you should on other throws into the hands of Williams across the formation and inside the 20 before he's brought down 13 yds as they've got the connection working his second catch in a row first down they'll send a tight end in motion right they'll fake the handoff now g under a heavy rush and down he goes they bring the safety on the blitz and he bust through to drop him for an8 yd loss we all know he's one of the better quarterbacks in the league but definitely not today his team trailing by multiple touchdowns and a late sack just a parting gift from the defense for him to take back to the locker room with him so that complicates things a bit here 18 yds to go now on second down and they'll send the tight end in motion throwing on second and long gof and that'll be incomplete took a pretty good shot as he tried to pull that one in couldn't hang on third down that incompletion is not a surprise with the way that this one has gone and the frustration to body language is evident everywhere this team they've really been put through the ringer in this one seventh play of this drive coming up but a long way to go on third down a shotgun snap for G and that'll be caught by St Brown and he'll go out of bounds in the Red Zone just inside the 20 that'll give him eight that time and that's going to bring up a fourth down that's certainly playing down and distance very well by the defense isn't it take whatever you want underneath by all means and they're indeed going to go for it here on fourth down so trailing here in the last quarter let's see how this plays out got to try it here he's back to throw it's Williams on the catch and able to get him down but he does reach the five no reason not to try it there and they do indeed convert on fourth fourth down trailing in the fourth quarter they felt compelled to go for it and they got it well I'd look down at my play sheet and what I would find plays have been successful throughout the game that have worked at the distance you need and that's exactly what they got done now it's G open man and he's got Williams touchdown Lions a 5yd touchdown catch and the Lions get a bit closer well they needed three scores to have any chance there's the first of the three as they get into the End Zone yeah Brandon I think that our guys at nextg stats in charge of the win probability are probably saying your chances still aren't great but now you still got more than three minutes to go you got to focus on the task at hand which is going to be getting the football back as quickly as possible extra point splits the uprights and the lead will be cut down to 14 so that drive 80 yds nine plays and it was Jameson Williams wrapping things up with a [Music] touchdown two scores down three timeouts left still a chance if they can somehow get this one back and the hands team for the Rams able to secure the football and that's why you have your hands team out there on the field those are the best guys ready to make that play and let's face it it was executed well it wasn't a bad kick it wasn't anything like that just that the normal outcome actually came to play analytics will tell you it's a very low possibility of getting the ball for the team kicking it in onside kick situation you're all about the numbers aren't you all about the numbers baby it's a new game now they don't lie [Applause] they'll hand it off now Williams it's a 6yd pickup and it gets him to Second and four good push from the offensive line and they've done well so far to build this league now they've got to get things to the finish line and that's a solid pick up there to begin the drive from the 38 now here's second and [Applause] four now a 10th carry here's Williams and tackled down after a gain of three leaves him with one yard to go on third down and this is the worry because sometimes you can get a little too predictable in spots like this you know you're going to run the ball but they know you're going to run the ball as well and now you look up and you're staring at an important third down two minutes left to play in this football game here on EA Sports so it's Rams football here as we get you reset this is a big third down and you'd have to think we'd see a timeout right away if they can't stop him here they'll fake the Jets sweep and instead a give up the middle to Williams and now right out of the two-minute break we'll get a timeout used defensively with a minute 56 to go so on fourth down Shawn McVey going to send out the field goal unit this to make it a three-score game late and his kick is good and that will extend their lead even further so they hadn't called on him at all until this point but he comes through here and buries one from long range yeah that's awfully impressive because usually kickers like to get that first one out of their system in the first quarter sort of get them into the flow of the game but to come in this late and knock it down from long distance give him a lot of [Applause] credit the Rams kickoff team on the field and here we go with a ball in the air [Applause] and he'll be stopped up at the 25 the Lions offense and Jared gof set to take over once more and it's been a struggle for him all afternoon this defense has really done a nice job of making him earn everything he gets and it's prevented him from getting into any kind of Rhythm here today [Applause] the Lions offense ready to kick off their next Drive well this game it has had no shortage of offense they've been able to put up a decent amount of points on this side Charles they just have not been able to keep Pace with the other offense they're going against here yeah that's a good way of pointing things out because now it's not a total loss because as you said they've scored some points so there's some plays they can build on moments where the game plan actually worked but overall though they were just outp person L they were going up against a team that's playing at an elite level here's gone open man is Raymond he's got it and he's going to get this all the way down inside the 35 the Lions now going to use the second of their timeouts as they'll get a chance to talk it over after picking up the first down [Applause] [Applause] down gof and yet again gof is intercepted travius white with a pick and the Rams are going to have it here just past the 25 with the points that we've seen scoring the defense has been at their best but these guys they' been a little bit better Charles and a nice interception there yeah you're right about that Brandon let's face it it's not always how you start it's how you finish right so maybe you have a rough game all the way along but if you make a big play like that at the right time it can make everything turn out just okay the offense for Los Angeles returns to the field and this one all over but the shouting you might say now there's one timeout remaining defensively but probably no real need to use it here yeah the only time they would use it strictly for [Applause] Pride the D can only stop it one more time as they take the knee [Applause] they'll run it with Williams and a nice run past the 30 yd line there 43 yds rushing for him now to this point Charles why didn't they just take the knee there you're asking the question that I'm asking as well because we've seen a lot of football where coaches decide maybe they get a little greedy I don't know if they're doing for stats or for what reason we've seen it happen in college and how about in the NFL the miracle of the metal lands all they had to do was take a knee and the game was over the Giants ran it one more time ball popped free Philadelphia picks it up and wins the game what year was that 1978 I think it was in November Charles a lot of happy faces heading into the tunnel as this one ends and understandably so not only did they get the win but boy their offense was on fire in this ball game and partner I have no idea with the top speed is on one of those high-end sports cars what's the Top Gear you can get into this offense they certainly were there in this one huh everything clicking for them in this contest the
