happy 1981 Hank this game means a lot to these two schools Miami of Florida back in a bowl game for the first time in 13 years Virginia Tech for the first time in 12 years they're young teams their their future looks even better and this could be a foundation for good things to come well I think playing in a bow game like this when Kurt is a selling vehicle for their respective programs there's no question about the fact that both teams earned the right to be in this game because they both enjoy eight and three records the Miami Hurricanes have done a super job under their leadership and direction of Howard schnellenberger who was a excellent offensive coordinator for Don schules Miami Dolphins and they have excellent balance good running good passing good kicking they average 24 points a game we've only given up 14 points a game so you have to be impressed with her overall scheme of things well you have to be impressed with Virginia Tech's defensive record and also their coach Bill douly he's just in his third year there with the hokes yes bill douly has only been there for three years and brought his team to the beach bow they are also eight and3 as I mentioned earlier they're the fifth best team in the nation on defense they too employ kind of a running style offense they average 53 runs a game 19 passes they have an outstanding receiver in Snell an outstanding runner in Lawrence and I think we're going to see a very fine football game here this afternoon now let's meet some of those backs Howard schnellenberger has coached under some of the amount of scoring against them it's a tough team to go against you know one thing that I wonder about uh Cur when you talk about the defense of Virginia Tech their nose guard David marble 6' 210 not very large to occupy that position it's going to be interesting to see what the the Miami Hurricanes are going to try to do in that particular area because there's definitely a size of margin with the an all americ Jim Bert he's awesome there the linebackers play a fiveman front two linebackers and four deep and another great player 31 the safety man Fred Marian he's the field G here's Lawrence on the pitch to the 50 45 still going and just short of the 40 and a and he broke tackles along the way bred Marr and the safety man had to bring him down he was second and tackles of Miami this year Marian Lawrence is not too big you know Hank he's only 5'9 195 but he's he has that balance he looks like he has excellent Visions I've seen him in films and he's very decisive when he makes his cut and of course the eye formation is really a great formation uh because you're back there seven yards you have plenty of time to look and read and react and see what's happening up front seven to nothing in Miami third and three the pass is a bad pass out to Tony mcke they fak Lawrence up the middle and then try to hit mcke in the sideline for a quick hitch pattern and Casey threw it over his head yeah they tried to sell the defense on the fact that it was going to be a quick hitting play inside faked inside threw the ball outside but went way way over the top falls incomplete and from weighs 165 and young 170 and I'm sure they're going to have some heavy duty coming at them during the course of this game trying to make tackles down field G is trying to set up a screen to get it out there up against the set line Chris Hobs a fullback it was a screen to the fullback but it really never got underway over there to make the tackle was Lewis Stewart 33 and Paul Davis the cornerback Lawrence Sprint draw meaning that you try to create the impression that it's going to be a pass from play action and then you give the ball to the Deep back blocking at the line of at the point of attack is like pass protection and Lawrence does a great job of seeing and reading that defensive alignment thir and just under five and now look like Jim Bird in coached number 83 somebody cross in that neutral zone you know the defensive line of the Miami Hurricanes the three defensive linemen they average 300 or 257 lbs they're big strong people well that BT is uh 245 p in Orchard Park New York the tackles though according to schellenberger the key to their team defensively Lester Williams 73 Virginia Tech thought he was the best one and Bob Nelson number 91 they're both big they both reason he's throwing it right over the top you have to hang on to the ball a little longer where you get a good follow it through with a wrist and throw with your body and throw with your legs he understand why Lawrence has been able to rush as successfully as he has each of these teams by the way will take back about $400,000 with him not in cash but uh that's going to help an athletic
