[Music] welcome to the biggest little city in the world Reno Nevada McKay Stadium home to the Nevada Wolf Pack where we have hit the jackpot with this matchup there's just something about the night cap after a day of wall toall football it just seems this is when chaos ensues as we'll see a squad from the ACC the SMU Mustangs taking on a team from the Mountain West the Nevada Wolf Pack glad to have you with us for EA Sports college football I'm reys Davis David poock and Jesse Palmer with me in the booth guys we are ready to Tee It Up Nevada about to kick it off to get this game started he'll bring it back from inside his five nice job executing all of the assignments as they put a stop to that return at the 22 the Mustangs offense takes the field and these guys involve everybody in the passing game and none more prominent than this big fella and the quarterback knows he's going to be under duress in this game so who you look for the tight end and there aren't many better than this guy no and just big bodies that you can miss a little bit high and it really doesn't matter but over the middle of the field closer throws so nice to have a security blanket with a great tight end and that's why QBs love their tight ends so much right especially when they're athletic because they make short throws turn into long Gams because of his ability after the catch it's so unique and special he is dominant in this offense with a first down they'll snap it from the 30 two out of the gun the inside hand off to the running back they stop him cold maybe gets a yard to the 34 yeah and the running back didn't get much here but you know you clearly want to always establish the tempo run the football be consistent make that defense physically meet the challenge didn't get much on first down it's second and nine they'll Run play action just a short pass to the tight end they're able to get him stopped just shy of the first down marker well it's a nice job to of the quarterback after the play fake there getting his eyes down the field he had to get that to his tight end quickly knowing he wasn't going to have a lot of space to run with after the catch lining up trying to convert this third and short from the 40 trying to pick it up on the ground and he's tripped up but not before picking up the first down it's a really good sign if you're on offense here you're putting it on your offensive line on third down critical down and distance opening drive of the game let those guys fire off get a hat on a hat you can run the ball pick up the first you're around Midfield and all things looking pretty good here early for this offense might as well run him until they stop him he's got it again you definitely want to commit to the Run game you you want to establish the Run game you want the defense to honor it but if it doesn't work a little later down the road you might think about airing that puppy out didn't get much on first down it's second and nine back to throw it's stone that friends is a busted play incomplete well missed opportunity on offense QB and receiver just not on the same page there they'll try to move the chains on this third and long from the 50 from the gun wants to pass he'll take the Deep shot catch and stride inside the 15 he's there to make the stop but not before he sets up this offense first and goal from the seven yeah and the quarterback knew exactly where he wanted to go with the football had time spins the ball deep nice job by this offense understanding what the defense is giving them and creating the explosive play after that huge gain now a chance to cash it in from just outside the five quick pass on the the jet [Applause] motion and he's able to find a little bit of Running Room before they get him down the offense making a statement early in this game they're going to open the entire Playbook and they're going to show this defense so many different looks and try to keep them on their heels I love that play call you could see the defense wasn't sure what was going on and after the really good gain on first down they'll try to finish it off on second and goal they're going to run it and he takes it in for the score touchdown Mustangs the offense goes as he goes so really no surprise on the opening drive they keep feeding him the football he showed you all of his ability on that TD lining up to tack one more onto that lead and the pat makes it 7 nothing so it's a 77y touchdown drive and it was closed out by the short yardage touchdown the kickoff unit about to go to work on the run from inside his own five and the return man has no place to run no place to hide and a place to be tackled so Nevada's offense headed onto the field our first look at them today as we take a look at our impact players for this one what are you looking for Jesse for a guy to make an impact well these are simply put the leaders of this football team and generally games go how these guys play if they make plays they've got a shot to win this one no doubt they got to show up the these are the team leaders these guys have to play well if they're going to win the football game you know runs like this often times are like a boxer in a boxing match obviously it's not a knockout punch but these are body blows and as the game goes on these small gains are going to turn into longer runs Lewis wants to pass fires into traffic picked off and they'll close in on him after a good return on the interception you know after watching that interception I just just wonder if this kid's too amped up tonight he was so excited to take the field he thought this was going to be a game that he could stat it up but he's going to have to do a better job tonight with his decision making that is not how you want to start a game the SMU offense is headed back onto the field that last Drive really productive David wound up with a touchdown they'll try to do it again yeah so I don't expect this offense to change too much Reese they had and he runs it in for the score touchdown SMU another rushing touchdown that's now two on the game this offense thought they could come into this one running the ball being the more physical team and they look like it right now [Music] on to attempt the [Applause] try and the extra point makes it 14 nothing that's exactly what you want to do when you have that type of field position strike quickly and they did one play and they put it on the board about to kick it away after scoring the touchdown and he takes this from inside the five nice job by the kickoff team everybody stayed in their lanes and they'll stop him at the 16 Nevada takes over as the offense returns to the field to say this has been a slow start is a bit of an understatement and they really need to get it going here Jesse that's right the opponent they're firing on all cylinders right out of the gate defensively for this unit they've been slow and struggling they need an explosive play to wake themselves up yeah and it's just the first quarter so it's not the end of the world you've seen slow starts but you got to continue to pick and pick and pick until you find that play or or that scheme that you can use against this defense and it'll be incomplete this is some physical pass defense well the quarterback knew he wanted to go to his tight end on that play he's a big physical Target but it was the hit on the play that forced the incompletion third and 10 still backed up inside their own 20 this drive hasn't really gotten started Lewis to throw dumps it to the back caught he'll get it up to about the 32 yd line before he stopped and it'll be first down yeah and obviously great play by the offense to keep the drive alive and also a good find by the quarterback on third down Nevada comes to the line after getting the first down he wants to throw unloads to the wide out got his man downfield that is exactly what you want to do with the football he's got it all the way down to the 15 yd line well after that last play you can see how electrifying this guy is and how special he is after he makes the catch if I'm on offense I'm trying to find a lot of way to get him touches in this game Nevada going quickly power football with the Run fight his way ahead they get him down after a pickup of three they'll mark it at the 12 [Music] [Applause] going to work in the Red Zone they can pick up the first down without getting it into the end zone they'll go right back to him he bullies his way all the way down to the 5 yd line well the offense knew what they needed to get that first down so they dial up the running play and they get just enough to keep the drive alive first goal and this feels like their chance to make a game of it they'll go to the air looking for the score and makes the grab in the end zone touchdown Wolfpack and what a nice start for this offense the throw game getting working getting the touchdown pass this quarterback getting a little bit of confidence this passing game getting in a rhythm nice start for this offense [Music] lining up for the Pat and after the extra point they've cut the lead in half down 14 seven they go 83 yds on the drive and the score comes on a 5yd touchdown pass just about set to kick it away here he comes from inside his own five not a lot of space to be found good Hustle by the coverage team and they stop him at the 21 the Mustangs have the ball back and ready to go to work the give to the tail back he's brought down but there's a flag on the play let's see if it stands so the decision has been made and the coach will take the penalty first down here for the [Applause] offense he'll keep it himself and he finds enough Running Room and he's marked down at the 20 and when these quarterbacks run run these Zone reads or read options whatever you want to call them they have to put their eyes on a certain Defender and they're reading him and basically you can't be right that's what makes it so hard to defend because if you do one thing he's going to do the other you do the other thing he's going to do the other so good luck stoping not much there picks up a couple to the 22 they line up with some serious work to do if they want to convert this one on Third and long trying to have a big completion here it's caught downfield nice job to get it past the sticks and they get him down at the 35 this is exactly why third down is practiced every single day third and short third and medium third and long it's money down for a reason you got to lock your in great success by the offense so far on third down they'll snap it on first down from the 35 he'll try the right side we'll give him a couple on that one second and eight coming [Applause] up went to the running game on first down now here they come again [Applause] got it behind the line it's Bailey they make the stop after the catch and still some work to do to pick up that first down well the short passing game is a great go-to for any offensive coordinator in the first quarter because it's reliable but it also allows you to see how the defense is going to react and play so this can certainly open things up later on this defense will try to force a fourth down on third and short from the 45 touch pass on the Jet [Applause] Sweep they've got it inside the 40 at the 39 as they pick up the first down I love that play call and I love the timing of the pre-nap motion because the quarterback was able to get it to the receiver right behind the offensive line because of the timing he was able to outflank the defense that puts him out in space where he's able to use his speed nice job with the pre- snap motion and timing from the gun they'll give it on the inside found a little running room and they get him stopped after a pickup of six to the 32 I like this guy as a running back because he can run between the tackles and he can also go outside he can really do it all got six on first down now a lot of options on second and four they'll run it out of the shotgun and they'll bring him down but not before he picks up the first down well the offense is in a really nice Rhythm right now it seems like no matter what they're dialing up they're getting positive yards and it just feels so good as a play caller when you know on first down you can get yards like that turning around and handing it off yeah and on the other side you're scratching your head going what the heck can I do here you got to find something the defense has got to find a way to create some momentum whatever they're doing right now it's not working so you got to keep go into that play sheet and maybe find something a little bit different that can give this offense something to think about I'll say this man in college football you see a lot of bad tackling you didn't see it right there that was an awesome job first off being there at the point of attack once the tight end made the catch there was no doubt he was going down great job form tackle the Mustangs are threatening in the Red Zone scanning the field it's Stone a shot toward the end zone and he's got it touchdown Mustangs that's [Applause] they'll try to add another to their [Applause] lead the kick is up and good and put one more on the lead an 84 yd drive there and the Capper a 19 yd toss for the touchdown they're just about ready to kick it away on the move from inside is five didn't find any crease in that kickoff coverage and he'll be stopped at the 17 Nevada takes over as the offense returns to the field now they need to put something together to answer that last score there's a lot of pressure too on this offense to have to execute at a high level they've got to score points David but they can't go too fast cuz their defense right now is tired and I think that's the difficulty being a play call like I have to balance all of those things my defense is a little bit tired I can't put on the field but I got to be aggressive Rive because this is a back and forth type game so a lot to process and think about he wants to throw here on second down he losts one down the sideline and it slips through his fingers incomplete that would have been a huge game if he could have held on well on defense they know that this offense is going to try and take shots they're going to try and keep their secondary players in a position to make these types of plays good job on the back end for that incompletion motion trying to get the defense to show its hand gets it out quickly love to see these third down conversions on offense and they're out to their own 39 yd line really nice job there by the quarterback understanding that it's Zone coverage on third down you're going to have to find someone working into a soft spot get the ball out of your hands quickly make an accurate throw and pick up the first well done fast motion from the offense quick touch pass to the receiver hard running there makes the tackle at the 46 but it's a 15yd gain to get them into plus territory yeah and way to be creative way to get the ball in the perimeter really quickly get some speed outside all you got to do is secure that edge and you're just trying to get that first down nice job nice play call by the offense this Nevada offense really has it going he'll just keep slinging it and the physical play there forces the incompletion on first down it seemed like there may have been a miscommunication there between the QB and receiver just not on the same page didn't connect last time let's see if they throw it again on second down Lewis wants to pass pressure coming good job to toss that ball out of bounds and avoid the loss now facing a third and long from the gun once to pass couldn't find a man and just had to throw it away to avoid a negative play Third and long situations are really hard to convert the defense knows it's going to be passed the pass rushers are getting up field you're under pressure you don't have timing and as a result now fourth down the wolf pack will line up to punt it away he ought to be able to use this first punt to pin him deep and the punt will hit at the seven and they can't Corral it it goes into the end zone it'll come out to the 20 hand off from the shotgun he showed it all there a little elusiveness a little power and he's got the first down well I know this is an offensive line that has a ton of Pride and they want to come out each and every game and really impose their will on the dline they got just enough push there on that run play to pick up the first and they'll line up from the 31 on first down finds the tight end brought down at the 45 after a 15y pickup really good job working through his progression you get it to him quickly and the big tight end has a chance to run a little and and a really good job by the QB throwing an accurate throw I I got to hit those guys on the Move On The Run so they can do this they can catch the football get up field and chew up some extra yards leaves it with the back fighting off the defender this running back just doesn't go down easily it's just difficult for defenses to get him on the ground not overly huge but if I'm an offensive coordinator I'm going to continue to find ways to feature him and just you know what let his talent do the rest halfway there on first down it's second and five the give on the inside and he'll be taken him down but he does have enough for the first down and this offense is clicking everything's moving and the guy carrying the football I mean he is carrying the rock like this is a guy that's he's setting his tone for this game creating some balance on this offense this offense is going to be a handful yeah David I'd love to sit here and say well the offensive coordinator is just one step ahead of his counterpart across the field that's not it right now his offensive line is establishing the line of scrimmage and you mentioned the back he right now is running with Authority on this drive well the defense just needs something positive to happen they're trailing in this game a turnover would be massive for momentum right now in a nice effort defensively getting a hand on the ball knocking it down and now on second down for this offense back to throw it's Stone and they got him for the sack you want to change some of this bad luck you've had so far around get after the quarterback and get his butt on the ground nice job by the defense this game ain't over it's still the first half this is a good [Applause] start as they get set to snap at time winding down here in the quarter on Third and long a check down would be the last resort just threw that one away to avoid disaster Master offenses know and work on it all week third Downs third downs we got to be really really good this offense not good on this third down it could come back to bite him and the Mustangs will send out the punt unit and there will be no return on this one and he can't get it out of bounds the ball will come come out to the 20 that's the end of the period and SMU has the lead man that was an impressive and dominant first quarter let's take a look at the stats before we move on just about ready to get things started here in the second we'll see if they continue to flex that muscle give to the running back stopped at the 25 after a 5yd gain I know the passing game sells the passing game is exciting but it's not exciting to get five or six yards of pop on the ground but it will be very successful Nevada going quickly they'll keep it on the ground picked up a useful 5yd chunk out to the 30 yd line listen I know that's not a huge game but those run plays is add up they make you tackle the back every single play physically you have to get some guy on the ground it takes its toll throughout a fourth quarter game ball sitting right at the 30 it'll be third and [Applause] short he'll do it himself brought down to the ground but he has enough for the first down [Music] movement from the linebackers trying to mess with the offensive Line's assignments Lewis to throw fires to the tight end nice pitch and catch there and they'll have enough for the first down I think that receiver really had two choices there catch the ball or he was going to wear it in his chest yeah he was going to be maybe taking an ice bath after too many of these Crow routs he catches them in the body like that this quarterback has a cannon arm the receiver found the soft spot in the zone and man the quarterback gave him no choice pre- snap Motion in the back field comes out throwing on first down takes the easy completion that's what you expect from a senior don't give them any extra yard yards great tackle there again this is a running back that can hurt you running it between the tackles and he's dangerous out in space they like to throw it to him out on the perimeter as he picks up a couple yards there got some of the work done on first now let's see what they have on second down going to the running game and they'll wrestle him to the ground after a short gain and sticking to the run I tell you what a lot of teams that are really good are really stubborn and they continue to run the football even with little success so this offense is going to continue to focus on running the football you can tell now facing a third and long from the 50 yd line from the gun wants to pass caught over the middle it's Howell putting together a real scoring threat here as they pick up the first down at the 36 there's a reason third down is called the money down what a great find by the quarterback great job finding his receiver uh at the end of the game you look at third down percentages it tells a huge story and it goes a long way in deciding who wins a football game running back goes in motion Lewis wants to pass he finds his man he knew exactly where he wanted to go with that one and they've got enough for the first down Zone coverage means everybody body's looking at the quarterback so now when I'm a wide receiver I got to make sure I know I fit in the hole between these zones I know where they're dropping to and I know where I need to get to great job by the wide receiver finding that hole and the quarterback throwing a strike they'll throw it on first down looking to the big tight end and he's going to score touchdown Nevada and the offense finds a way to cut into the this league they still have plenty of work to do they do but that's a big score you don't want to get late and start getting in the second half where you're fighting to come back by so many points so great job getting points get that momentum back on your side so you can come out and do some good things when you get the ball next time now they'll line up for what they hope is automatic and it's up and good as they draw Just a Touch closer they Mark 78 yds down the field and they finish it off with a touchdown toss from the 23 kickoff team has the ball teed up and they're about ready to go from inside his own 10 he'll try to help out their field position and The Return Man reaches the end of the line and down he goes the SMU offens is headed back onto the field they'll have another opportunity to extend this lead after punting last time David and it's important to put that punt behind you it's it's over let it go get back to what you were doing that built this lead Palmer yeah and defense obviously they won a few Downs uh that last drive so we got to put them on their heels here maybe mix up a few Personnel groupings and try to show them some pictures they haven't seen yet they got nothing on the last play it's second and 10 looking to throw with stone he just got rid of that one to save the down didn't see anything he liked now on Third and 10 if they can move the chains here maybe they can get this drive started it'll be a draw the Mustangs will punt it away on fourth down this will be the second time they've had to kick it [Applause] away he'll bring it back it's Robinson that's a perfect example of not settling for a fair catch pick up whatever every yardage you can and help out the offense out of the shotgun they go to the ground and he doesn't find much Running Room a short gain on the play Run game is good balance is good now listen if the Run game isn't good then you got to pass the football a little bit more but sometimes you got to keep them honest take them chunk by chunk didn't get much on first down it's second and nine [Applause] he's looking to throw that's caught it's Smith and they reacted well to the completion but it was too late to keep him from getting the first down oh man did he turned that one loose and fired it into the teeth of the zone and you know as a quarterback Rees when you're throwing it to the perimeter of the field on these curl routes you've got to have some heat you've got to have arm talent to get that ball out quickly into the hands of your receiver before all those Defenders can get to it man this QB's got a can he's dropped behind the line of scrimmage that'll be a loss of three man what a spectacular play by that defensive end to come up with the tackle there and you see those guys get off the football so fast most of these guys are 250 to 275 lbs but they get off the ball fast low and the offensive linemen they have no chance to stop those guys as quick and as fast as they are inside the 30 they make the stop but there is a flag on the field we'll see what that's all about look you want to make the quarterback feel you you want to get pressure in his face that was so close but just a tad late motion from the offense calls his own number able to pick his way forward for a decent game before the defense gets him down [Music] going to work on second down in the red zone is still some ground to cover to pick up that first down Lewis to throw unleashes to the end zone and with the Hallelujah land touchdown Wolfpack all even up after that one basically a brand new game and with a tie guess what back to the offense back to the off which defense can get a stop these offenses have been [Music] huming getting set for the point after smashes it through for the pat a very efficient five play scoring drive and they get it into the end zone with a 6-y touchdown pass and we're all square as he's set to kick it away from inside the 10 here he comes not a lot of space to be found good Hustle by the coverage team and they stop him at the 21 the Mustangs have the ball back and ready to go to work they'll go to the ground followed that blocking and got five out to the 26 I I like it just frustrate the defense get that five to six yards make him honor the Run make him know that you're willing to run the football and run it effectively halfway there on first down it's second and five they'll run it from The Gun Works ahead for a couple they'll stop him at the 27 they'll try to move the chains on Third and short from the 27 dropping back it's Stone he's right on Target and how about that catch and run so dangerous this guy and a big key on that throw to the slot receiver guys is putting the ball out in front the location of the throw is what helped that guy get extra yards after the catch and the Mustangs will snap it on First and 10 they'll leave it with him a most efficient pickup of six on first down down it's second and four and that's the problem with blitzing on defense you live by the blitz you die by the blitz defense dialed up the pressure but the offense had a better play call they ran it away from the Blitz and that's why they were able to be successful twin receivers on both sides of the field it's second and four he's looking to throw a strike downfield offense on the move a big play there gets it to the 30 and a really good job by the quarterback being very decisive he saw his matchup he went for it he attacked it got the positive gain I would say he's going to find that guy a few more times today the Mustangs want to pick up the tempo looking to go up top on first down fires deep toward the end zone ball in the air intercepted what a big gamechanging play I love when you see defensive players they jump on the ball like they were the offensive guys so aggressive going and getting that pick creating some big Mojo for your [Music] team Nevada takes over as the offense returns to the field how big is this drive scored a touchdown the last time they had it defense gets a stop and now it's up to them in a tie game all right so if you're the offensive coordinator he's loose and a pick up of better than 30 yards on that completion before the defense brings him down well it didn't take long for this guy to leave his impact in the game guys with that catch this guy's already over a 100 yards in the game and we're not even done the first half that kind of play will send a surge of energy through your offense now they've got it first and 10 inside the 40 Lewis wants to pass and it's incomplete if you're going to take a hit like that you might as well hang on to the ball after the missfire now on second down they'll try the run and could have used a little bit more there pick up of three it's third and seven the Run game just has not been working for this offense all game long saw it on that last play as well just not getting enough push up front on the offensive line they haven't been physical in third down conversions are a huge stat and this one would be a doozy if they can pull it off I don't think that's the way they drew it up in complete yeah and third and short that choose not to run throw the football and I think a lot of that has to do with they know they're in field goal range they can take the three points on the board the wolf pack will have to bring the punt team onto the field this will be the second time they've had to kick it away the punt goes out of bounds and a nice job to get them backed up I think they'll spot it right around the 15 the SMU offense is headed back onto the field throws to the wide out he's got an open man gets it to the 42 ydd line and that's a first down hey nice job by the offense there attacking the middle of the field excellent route finding the soft spot in the defense nice job by the quarterback putting it right on his guy and the mustains racing to the line in the hurry up he'll come out throwing on first down he's got it inside the 25 and he'll run it into the end zone touchdown SMU man that's a play this kid has been running ever since he was 7 years old at the park with his best friend throwing him go routes right down the field I'm running by a guy I'm looking back locating the football making the catch and he does it in a big moment here in this game [Music] [Applause] lining up to tack one more onto that lead and the extra point is true and they're on top by seven this offense Prides itself on going after you and they did with that long touchdown pass pass to finish off a two-play drive kickoff team is on the field they'll try to drive this one deep he'll start the return inside his spot he was hoping for something a little more Dynamic but they get him on the ground at the 20 Nevada takes over as the offense returns to the field feeling some heat and the quarterback caught up two and sacked at the 12 that is exactly what this defense needed they have not had a great first half given up a bunch of touchdowns but this might get them started this might get the energy going and maybe rattle a quarterback a little bit with that sack and after the loss on that last one an all important second down play from the 12 the give to the back they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one yeah I think the running back kind of went rogue on that last running play I'm not sure it was designed to go that direction he tried to make it happen on his own and unfortunately ended up losing yards this defense has kept them backed up now one more stop and they can get off the field on Third and long looking to throw and he needs a chunk play that pass not close as he got drilled trying to deliver it and it'll bring up fourth down this QB has had a lot of success all day long throwing for so many touchdowns looking very comfortable finally the defense gets to him finally the defense gets a win they needed something to go their way got to start getting some more hits on this guy fourth down and the punt team sends it the other way he's brought down but there's also a penalty marker down let's see what this is about the officials offer the deal and the coach accepts it they will take the [Applause] penalty quick completion to the right you'll take this every time five yards on the first down play and those slot receivers nowadays they're little water bugs man you you can play Touch football in an elevator to lose to these guys because they're so quick and so Dynamic get open and catch the football picked up some yardage on the ground now here comes second down he'll pull it on the read they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one well one of the reasons this offense likes the option game with the quarterback is to use his speed and try to attack the perimeter of the field the defense though not having any of it you saw the contain on the play forcing him back in the middle of the field and they're able to Coral him for a huge loss now this offense facing a third and long from their own 30 Lewis to throw on target to the left and they don't drag him down until he gets all the way to the 46 yd line man this quarterback is having himself a day over 200 yds in the first half it was hard enough for Palmer to get over 200 in a game more or less in a first half clock stops momentarily for the first down they'll hurry to the line they'll throw it on first down that's reeled in it's Smith and he was able to get away from one tackle but plenty of help was on the way decent pick up on that play well it's a nice job by the defender they're closing the Gap with the wide receiver they're going to complete the hitch pass but he's able to run right up on him get him to the ground for a minimal game clock's running and they'll try to get to the line warped speed for second down he's looking to throw using his feet to buy time I love the play call there too because second and short defense is thinking you might run it so you try to catch him off guard with the pass nothing there even if you throw an incompletion you're going to have a chance to run it the very next play but doesn't matter this guy's just so athletic himself he's able to go get the first let's get a fresh set of downs wolf pack will will have first and 10 he's looking to throw it it's complete on the right side a timeout is called as this offense tries to find a way to get more points on the board before the half I like the slot receiver because he gives his quarterback a good option working the middle of the field he's a nice weapon in this offense he's looking for a man on second down grabbed in the middle it's Smith here's a Timeout on the field tight game late in the first half well the defense playing Zone coverage there they're taking away all of the QB's primary options down the field so he has to check it down to the drag running underneath they're going to go to the air on Third and short makes the grab it's howwell defense makes a stop but the chains move and it's first and goal from the e well this defense has tried to find ways to disguise their coverage and mix it up to try to confuse the QB it's not working though that last completion he's now got over 300 yds passing and backed up first and goal this defense fighting to hold the lead and carry it to the locker room makes the grab into the end zone touchdown Nevada yeah and the passing game comes through man and we need more of that in the second half an extra point away from tying this football game you Trail a little bit in the first half stayed calm if this passing game can continue to heat up look out in the second [Music] have he'll try to tack on one more and it's perfect they put it in the end zone with a 12pl scoring drive and they finish things off with an 8yd toss for the score they got the late touchdown on the board now about to kick it away and hoping the defense can keep them from answering he'll bring it back from inside his five he was hoping for something a little more Dynamic but they get him on the ground at the 20 the Mustangs have the ball back and ready to go to work now you find out just how much of a gunslinger you are will you roll the dice here late in the half David and you know the defense is going to be really really conservative so I think it's an opportunity to be able to take a shot see how much of a chunk you can get before then you decide really Jesse how you want to finish the half you just can't turn it over and throw a pick if you're the quarterback here you have got to be so smart if you're going to be aggressive with your decision Mak looking deep down the right side and he'll pull it in inside the 20 ripping off a huge chunk of yardage and he's got it just outside the 10 at the 11 the offense calls timeout it's the second one they've used this half wants to throw on first down into the house touchdown Mustangs and I just love the execution by this offense late in the half man you want to take the lead you want to get that momentum on your side and they do it they finish it with the passing game I tell you what heat that passing game up you can keep this lead keep the momentum and keep putting up numbers lining up to add another and the extra point is true and they're on top by seven quick strike offense on that three play scoring drive and they finish it with an 11 yd touchdown Dart the kickoff team out there getting set looking for an alley from inside his own 10 he was hoping for something a little more Dynamic that they get him on the ground at the 20 they'll come out and take a knee and that should send us to [Applause] halftime that's the end of the second quarter that means is time to join Kevin in our halftime update thanks guys a first half that saw a little bit of everything there in Reno the passing game for both sides has been outstanding on point unrelenting they've excelled in the short game the intermediate game and especially on the Deep ball all in all a thrilling display of offensive Firepower and these defenses have a lot to discuss here at halftime and with that let's send it back to the guys inside Macky Stadium the Mustangs will kick it away to crank up the second half and he'll return it and try to get behind his blockers not nearly as much as he' hoped when he brought it out of the end zone he'll be stopped at the 15 Nevada takes over as the offense returns to the field I imagine we'll see them go right back to work up top after how productive that passing game was in the first half and it's interesting if I'm the defense and I've got the lead they've had success throwing the football but we're winning I I don't know that this defense changes too much of what they've done in the first half I think they got to do a better job with pass rush they might want to change their coverages as well because they're probably at this point expecting this offense to have to keep throwing considering they did have success in the first half the give out of the gun defense there to stop him after a gain of one to the 22 I never know if it's grammatically correct to say a team is being out physical you hear a lot in football though that's happening in this game they are just not getting the push they need all game long up front to have any success when they decide to run it Nevada going quickly on Third and short they'll try to throw for it grab near the marker it's Howell there to make the tackle but the big throw is good enough to give them a first down you can tell this quarterback did his homework coming into this game he has been dissecting this defense with his arm and his mind over 300 yds passing now the wolf pack with a first and 10 here quickly complete and that's a very productive first down play and bringing up second and three hey I'll tell you what that slot receiver he may not be the biggest receiver in the world but he is Shifty and he runs really good routes you saw it on that play kept it on the ground on first down let's see what they do on second Lewis wants to pass fires to the wide out complete downfield finally run out of bounds but he has his offense rolling with a first down new set of downs after that completion leaves it with the back and he was fortunate not to lose yardage on that play able to wedge it back to the line of scrimmage how about the defender being a heat seeking missile he was on radar lock he found the football and flew down with some bad intentions got stuffed on first down it's second and 10 quarterback on the keeper got up for the first down and the defense finally makes the stop after the sweet run and good game and I tell you what this is the big difference between the NFL and college football so many guys week in week out they just pull the ball down or they take a designed quarterback run like this and chew up so many yards so fast so Dynamic so athletic at the quarterback spot in college football the back goes in motion trying to find his man on first down they get to him as he throws can't find his man as he took a shot trying to deliver that football and it'll be second down this QB has been so comfortable all day long obviously having a ton of success you've got to affect him you got to put some hits on him those body blows so you can make him wear out and physically feel you this is the first time really getting to him this defense needed this B it's going to be important this offensive line is able to get a little bit of push just got to give this guy an inch a little crease and he can make yards for [Applause] you here they come up to the 23 yd line not thinking field goal wanting to convert this third and short Lewis to throw unloads to the wide out all kinds of room to throw that one in there touchdown Nevada and they take it in for six more points quarterback's abilities to read the field is huge and also the anticipation the timing to be able to throw the football Jesse and hit a guy in stride so he can get run after the catch and get in the end zone that was a nice job by the quarterback yeah it's critical David listen a lot of times touchdown passes aren't thrown into the end zone you've got to read the coverage hit the open guy and let him do the rest they'll try to attack one more on their [Applause] score and the extra point was good no incident there and we are tied up in the third so a drive there of 84 yds and they finish it off with a touchdown toss from the 23 all tied up and just about set to kick it away on the run from inside his own five he was looking for some Running Room but not much to be found as he stopped at the 18 the SMU offense is headed back onto the field they'll give it to the back able to pick up a couple before he's dragged down at the 19 picked up two yards on that last one they need eight on second down out of the gun the inside handoff looking for a crease and they try the middle of this Stout defense and they rise to the challenge that back had absolutely nowhere to run the football actually is he counting I think I think he's counting to make sure there's only 11 guys on defense if they can convert here that type of play can really give you a shot of momentum to the air it's Stone throws to the wide out he's got it and they'll pick up the first down and Mark it at the 47 nice play design on that one you make it easy for your quarterback too because it's easy to see what's happening right in front of you over the middle of the field you can see where Defenders are dropping you can see where the soft spots are in zone coverage and just a really nice job by the QB locating his guide making an accurate throw going up top on first down with the catch it's Hudson here comes the offense on second down the give from the gun shakes off the defender really nice stop there from this senior leader let's see what they do on third down he'll keep it himself at the 35 he's open and they explode on that one and they've got it down to the 22 he's not a burner or anything but he's got enough about him that he can run and hurt you at times yeah he he's sneaky fast isn't he it seems like he's not moving too well but he's definitely going faster than what he looks and this defense they're finding that out right now from the gun they'll try the middle you'll take four yards on first down every time second and six and the Mustangs are threatening in the Red [Applause] Zone he'll do it himself makes one man miss and he's almost to that first down marker there saying he's a little bit short they might want to bring out the sticks and measure but it looks as if he'll be just short of the first down really need to pick up this conversion and avoid having to settle for the field goal on Third and short they'll try to pick it up on the ground here tackle is made after the first down and that's so tough as a defense because they only got to get inches but I got to find a way to somehow get a knock back stop the running back's feet right there I couldn't do it he gets downhill just enough and he gets the first down it's a good job too there on third down by the offense because a major statistic in football in terms of winning and losing is how good are you at staying on the field keeping drives alive whether it's third and long or third and inched you just have to go execute they do it there operating in the Red Zone here on second down he'll pull it on the re and they're able to shove him to the turf as they stop him for a short gain as a defensive guy now you're always zoomed in on the quarterback I mean these guys they're whether they're throwing the football or running it at least they have the football in their hands every time you know where they're going to be you focus in the defense locked and loaded understand what they were trying to accomplish doing a good job getting to the quarterback and then make those physical Hits Count finish those finish those tackles with aggressive hits make that quarterback feel you for a whole length of a game well on Third and short in field goal range they dial up the pass play quarterback was trying to get through his progressions there was just simply nobody open couldn't make it accurate enough throw ball Falls incomplete Now setting up a big decision here on fourth down here comes the field goal unit as they'll try to get the three and as a holder picks his spot it'll be a 25 yd attempt it is true as he puts three on the board and after the field goal guys they are back on on [Music] top after putting up a three- spot the kickoff unit set to go the returner will field it and bring it back he was hoping for something a little more Dynamic but they get him on the ground at the 20 Nevada takes over as the offense returns to the field that last touchdown Drive was surgical through the air Jesse it sure was and that's why this offense is so dangerous David because they can score in a hurry because of how efficient they are throwing the football and welcome to Modern college football that's what it is spread you out out find my Playmakers make quick decisions and really put defenses in a difficult situation didn't get much done on that first play of the drive it's second and 11 here's the handoff they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one well the linebacker showing you readed and react he knew exactly where that running play was going and he beat the football to the line of scrimmage and forc the tfl and the running game has been going in the wrong direction they'll try to get their first positive play of the drive here on third down Lewis wants to pass keeps looking down field trying to make magic on the scramble get as far as you can and then get down don't take that hit you know QBs want to make those big plays they want to they want to put up the big stats but when nothing's there sometimes you just tuck the ball get a minimal gain I like the slide by the way too get down and don't take a big hit Nevada will be forced to punt he'll try to really get into this one signals for the fair Catch and hauls it in just shy of the 30 the Mustangs have the ball back and ready to go to work always good to get points on a drive David but Chip Shot field goals can leave you a little empty and I think it's great to get points but the great teams get touchdowns in the red area you got to get out there this time and execute a little better on this drive you're absolutely right David generally the best Red Zone offenses are the ones that run the ball the best so let's see if they can be a little bit more physical on this drive after losing a couple on that last play here's second and 12 wide receiver coming across in motion from the gun he leaves it with the back defense not budging he's still able to get two to the 29 they line up and it is a long way to the sticks from here on Third and long he's going to have to throw for it fires to the big fella the Mustangs line up to punt it [Applause] away they're able to put a stop to that return right at the 30 yd line Nevada takes over as the offense returns to the field they just didn't quite find the Rhythm on that last Drive Jesse they had to punt it I think they got to be more physical David I think up front they got to do a better job getting blocks and establishing this running game and how easy does football become if you're the more physical team if you can threaten the run and then then run play action it opens up the whole offense at your disposal eight- yd pickup on first down leaves them with second and [Applause] short quarterback on the keeper they get him on the ground but it's a first down such an advantage when you have an athletic quarterback today in college football because they can help you move the sticks with their legs great open field running ability by this QB now they'll line it up from the 44 on First and 10 to the ground with the back continuing to turn and move it forward and they're closing in on Midfield it's down at the 48 small gain I know but and the defense knows he's going to run the football he's willing to run the football not just drop back and pass make him on to the Run game you got to do a lot of this solid pick up of four on first down it's second and six the poar and throw off the RPO didn't pick up a lot there moved it Forward just a few I tell you this slot receiver he really does give his quarterback a nice option runs really good routes he's got nice hands and you saw it on on that last play they're facing a third down quarterback flips it ahead quickly to the receiver and how does he keep running I'd be dizzy after a spin move like that this offense has a lot of different ways they can attack you and you're going to see the entire Playbook at work in this game throwing it running it and getting guys the ball out on the perimeter great job this Nevada offense really has it going Lewis to throw oh he had him right down the middle and it just squirted right through his fingers and they missed an opportunity for a nice play on first down no go back to work after the incompletion here's second and 10 from the 36 going to the ground just enough room to gain a couple down to the 34 a third and long coming up here from the gun wants to pass what a snag by the defense takes it the other way and he's wrapped up after a solid return on the pick a lot of quarterbacks have so much confidence that they can fit the ball in tight Windows how about the defensive player right here making an unbelievable interception forcing the turn over big play Big momentum swing the SMU offense is headed back onto the field they missed an opportunity to extend this lead the last time they had it Jesse yeah they got to be able to regain that momentum right go back to what was working earlier on in this one and David to me that starts with being the more physical team no I definitely agree being the more physical team but understanding the situation of the game you're still winning you got the football back now put a nice drive together and execute that's the end of the period and SMU has the lead three quarters are in the books time becomes a factor both in trying to hold the lead or cut into it as we take a look at the stats one more period to go to see who can make the winning plays and come home with the victory line getting set on second down looking to throw it's Stone quickly to the tie down and a good job in coverage there as they stop it after just a few yeah nice job by the defense staying glued to him getting him on the ground as soon as he catches the football knowing he's a threat I'm not going to let this guy get out of my sights nice job by the D picked up some yards on the last completion but it's third down from the gun wants to pass just had to get rid of that one to save the yardage on third down great job by the defense there they weren't surprised by that play call there on Third and short they were expecting pass they took everything away and forced the incompletion and the Mustangs will try to pin them back with the punt and that one will Sail Out of Bounds no chance for a return there Nevada takes over as the offense returns to the field that last Drive was promising for a while but you just can't mess it up at the end with the pick Jesse no you got to be able to finish drives especially in this game if you're going to win in David they've got to be able to eliminate the metal mistakes yeah and I don't think you get conservative or play it safe you can trust your guy I think you put the ball right back in his hands and let him do his thing got eight on first down now looking at a second and two PRN that motion quarterback trying to get a read using the quick game and eventually taken down but what about that spin move gives him the first down yardage now on first down from the 43 yd line looking to move it through the air catch in the middle it's Howell they're ripping off chunks of yardage they get it to the 33 find my guys quickly know my matchups get them the football let them do the rest so many Playmakers now in football I'm trying to get it to him as fast as possible so he can do that right after the catch make guys miss make beautiful plays NADA comes to the line after getting the first down he's going to pass quickly out to the tight end and he laid the lumber to stop him from getting the first down that's a great example of the defense there tackling the catch as soon as the big fella caught the ball down he went not picking up the first after the short completion let's see if they go back to the air there going to throw it again but a little time lets it Go and he'll make the grab along the sideline but he's not able to get to the first down marker guys out of the back field now it's not just run the ball downhill anymore you got to be versatile I got to be able to trust you in the pass game and I got to be able to throw you the football and you can do that right there I know you're going to catch it and I can depend on you Ball's at the 25 they're in field goal range but they'd love to convert this third and short they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one and a great job by the linebacker you could tell starting to crowd the line of scrimmage get up there in the line of scrimmage see it diagnose it get in the back field get the running back on the ground for the tackle for the loss so this is going to be rif with drama and overflowing with pressure on this field goal try he splits to the uprights and puts three on the board and we are all tied up here in the fourth and this kicker has ice water in his veins fourth quarter you need to make the field goal to tie it up and that kid just drilled it coming down the stretch in the fourth and we are all tied up about set to kick it away let's see if he can make a play on the return really disciplined job by the coverage unit to to get down there and make the stop at the 19 the Mustangs have the ball back and ready to go to work fires to the wide out a beautifully placed ball to the outside and the tow drag for the big pickup if you like the stats and I know the coach wants the officials to have another look at the monitor using a timeout here thinks the call is going to end up going his way he spun that Wheel of Fortune by challenging the call and it does not go his way and he loses the timeout the offense lines up at the 40 they've got a first down looking for a man it's Stone unloads to the wide out on target over the middle and they'll finally bring him down after he rips off a huge play the Mustangs moving quickly to the line leaves it with the running back smashes through that run epitomizes a veteran Savvy senior who knows how to find space I think Jesse and reys could call offensive plays for any team if they're having this much success on the ground it starts with the ground game right like you can chew up these kind of plays then I can play action later on and take shots but right now defense is first got to stop the run game that's been chewing him up got his man quickly he's there to make the stop but the damage has been done as they pick up the first down on the throwing catch and this is sort of like a pinball machine the numbers keep tick tick ticking up he's closing in on 450 yards yeah Reese and there's no defense for perfect throws and that's what this guy's been delivering all game long you know the coverage hasn't always been awful but this guy just finds a way to thread the needle from the gun leaves it on the inside with the back going to work in the Red Zone they can pick up the first down without getting it into the end zone moving the running back trying to get the D to tip its hand he's got it and he won't be able to push his way in he's stopped at the one I know we're a long way up here in the booth but guys y'all remember that ball you could throw that whistled that thing was whistling it had so many RPMs on it and this offense is so close they can almost taste taking a fourth quarter lead but they don't want to leave too much time on the clock for an touchdown SMU they move on top here in the fourth well let's count them up one two three three is the magic number for touchdowns yeah it's as easy as ABC goodness gracious he's been getting whatever he wants whenever he wants however he wants I might want to change something up or maybe focus on that guy that's getting the football a lot and scoring Pat unit on the field the extra point is good and now in the fourth they're up by a touchdown and an extra point they put together an 81 yd drive and they capped it off with a one yd plunge about to kick it off after punching it in for the touchdown and he takes this from inside the five he was hoping for something a little more Dynamic but they get him on the ground at the 20 Nevada takes over as the offense returns to the field they go to the ground knocked down after picking up five out to the 24 halfway there on first down it's second and five Lewis wants to pass finds his man down the middle good job running that route to get past the stick because he got nothing after the catch and that's a really nice route by the wide receiver just understanding I got to win right now I got to get inside of that guy and I know I'm going to get contact you run over the Middle Field on a slant you're going to get hit nice job securing the catch making the play they're going to run it and they try the middle of this defense and that is not happening defense is about firing off hitting the offensive guys and hang in your gaps everybody knowing where they're supposed to be you could tell the defense everyone was right where they're supposed to be nowhere to run they got nothing on the last play it's second and 10 they think they can impose their will here with the run to the right they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one man oh man am I upset at my offensive line to give up penetration that fast man we blinked and missed it hey he barely got the ball and just got d destroyed immediately what a great play they line up with some serious work to do if they want to convert this one got out of trouble and throws and they'll miss the connection here on third down after that incompletion fourth and long now on your own side of the field you're trailing in the fourth quarter what's your go-to play call here in the passing game where is the matchup that you trust in to come up with a big one to give yourself a chance to stay alive and win this game the wolf pack will line up to punt it away he'll wave for the fair Catch and haul it in at the 25 the SMU offense is headed back onto the field and they've got a little bit of a cushion here David if they can add to it on this drive it would be nice and it definitely makes a little bit of a difference knowing I'm up by more than a field goal obviously Jesse my mindset switches and I know I can't make mistakes yeah and David I don't think they have to reinvent the wheel on offense here what they've been calling has been working just get back to doing what you're good at 8- yd pickup on first down leaves them with second and short give to the running back tackled but he has a first down it's a point in the game I think as a coaching staff where you really challenge your offensive line to go win the football game right we've got to lead late we're going to run the the football and the defense and everybody in the stadium knows that's what's going to happen can we run the ball down their throats and impose our will that's what this offense right now is trying to do running back searching for a hole they'll pick up four second and Six coming St with a running game on first down now here they come again the GI to the bat and he'll find enough Running Room to get it just short of Midfield at the 49 I think that was an example of the offensive coordinator trying to help out his quarterback he's trying to keep these third Downs manageable you know you throw the ball on second down and it's incomplete now you've set up third and long and now you're set up to fail and that last run leaves with a third down will they keep it on the ground touch pass on the Jet Sweep that'll get the job done and move the chains and they'll Mark the ball at the 45 and just went with something very easy very reliable Flip It Forward let your receiver do the rest I only got to get a few yards nice job nice execution first down and the Mustangs are rolling down the field power football with the run you'll take four yards on first down every time second and six this offense could not have executed in this situation any better just draining some time off the clock on the move it's a 30 just what this offense was looking for sets him up the 26 with the first down and this guy really has been a Workhorse today he's made plays when his offense has needed them the most he's a guy who's reliable they know they can turn around give him the football and he'll go make things work out they're going to need him to finish this game he has to continue playing well after that big run there back to pass it's Stone makes a grab over the middle and they'll stop him just short of the first down just inches away from moving the sticks this offense is not letting up guys they've got a lead here late and they are still taking shots they're still looking for explosive plays this defense just has not had an answer here all game long this drive is already drained more than three minutes off the clock and now they've got it on second down he'll keep it himself he's dropped behind the line of scrimmage that'll be a loss of three I hate being that guy to say just take a dive don't take a hit but when the play is going Absol absolutely nowhere you might think about it first Do no harm right and you've already been harmed so just don't make it worse don't take those big shots unless you know it's for an important situation goal line third down touchdown nice move to keep moving oh no the ball popped out this could change things and the defense jumps on it and they get that turnover and that right there probably the biggest play in this game so far the offense has the lead and they're justy trying to run the football to run this clock out but the defense able to knock it out jump on it now all of a sudden this game has a completely different feel Nevada takes over as the offense returns to the field that last Drive fizzled out Jesse they had to punt it yeah they did and David they're just going to have to do a better job Lofts one high and deep and and this is dropped incomplete pass he had a huge gain in his fingers and he couldn't hold on and the defense is playing with a sense of urgency right now obviously they're playing with the lead they know this offense needs to find a way to generate points expecting a shot on that last play so nice job in coverage now on second down after the incompletion Lewis to throw fires to the wide out nice defensive play to get a hand in there and knock it away I think the quarterback's got to do a better job with his eyes guys he's already been picked off twice in this game and that one got swatted away he's telegraphing where he's throwing the football and it's making life really hard on him this is the type of play that could be a pivotal moment tight game third and long coming from the gun wants to pass tight end finds a soft spot he's brought down but there's a flag on the field let's see which way that's going to go just an ill advised play by the defender to make contact with the quarterback after the throw and it cost his team gets it out fast they make the stop but not before they do their work up top and pick up a first down well the defense did a nice job taking everything away down the field but once the drag route was caught they just couldn't rally to the ball carrier in time to make a tackle and as a result new set of downs Wolfpack will have first and 10 he wants to throw fires to the big fella I'll tell you I love the play call on first down here you're just trying to find an easy completion and the shortest throw on the field for the quarterback is finding your biggest Target and that's the tight end nice job still some work to do after that last completion it's second down he's looking to throw finds his tight end and they make the tackle but he has plenty for the first down important in the passing game that it's not just receivers doing all the work you got to get running backs involved you got to get your Big Fellas you got to get the tight ends going too this Nevada offense really has it going he wants to throw it again and that incomplete pass caused by the big hit on first down second down coming my job is to make sure that ball comes loose and I got to go through that guy use my shoulder pad drive my feet and really really be physical cuz if he bobbles it at all or as soon as his hand gets to the ball you can tell the difference when that body jerks forward and that ball starts to come loose and pop out fires to the tight end he's brought down solid pick up but a little bit short of the first down defense comes up with a really big stop there that's nice they don't give up the first down so the clock keeps working but they're on their own end of the field they know this offense is going to start taking shots into the end zone they better have some guys ready on the back end ready to swat some balls away and make some plays Lewis wants to pass he's going to throw de right side and the DB making a huge play knocking it away down field after that incompletion there is so much pressure now on this quarterback to come up with a big play they need to score a touchdown they need to keep this drive alive to have any shot at winning this game but it all comes down to this play right here and here we go down a score they'll go for it on fourth down he'll go up top maybe a deciding play here he's got a first down and maybe a lot more and he's knocked down immediately but not before he moves the chain and you just wonder if this defense now is starting to feel it a little bit they're a bit on their heels after that fourth down play to keep this drive going someone's going to have to step up here and stop the bleeding they're only up by one possession sprinting to the line to try to get this one off clock's running to the air on first down firing to the right complete and he's chased out of bounds but not before he gets the first down stops the clock and has them on the move trying to get the late score he knew exactly what they needed there made the play and got out of bounds to stop the clock and you got to keep this turbo mode on right we got to keep going fast the clock's running down fourth quarter need a score great execution to get the first down we need a lot more of this on this drive he'll do it himself they get him on the ground at the three yd line but this defense is taking some some punches that's what's so great about these QB runs they just chip away at the defense and as this game goes on these little QB runs they're going to help keep third Downs manageable for this offense they've got it down to the three now it's second and goal he's looking to throw and he got a hand on it to knock it down in the end zone man what a play by the defender thrown into the end zone he squats it away when a game's this close this late that's a play when we look back on this one that maybe helps win the game for this team if they can pay off this third and goal with a touchdown it might be getting a little tough to swallow over there on the other sideline oh and he dropped it he had a touchdown right in his hands and couldn't hang on it'll be fourth down what a fantastic job by the defense that time forcing the incompletion they've got the lead late setting up fourth down can they come up with one more stop if they get it they might win this game trying to pound it in he's stopped short and they'll turn it over what a huge stand by this defense they're backed up first and 10 from inside their own five let's see if they can create some space the give to the tailb and I think they'll give him two on that one second and eight coming up timeout is called the clock stopped with 26 seconds left it's a great play there by the defense stopping that run but now with less than a minute to go you got to use your timeout you got to try and conserve as much clock as possible to give yourself a chance to win and he Jes the first guy made him Miss and picked up a few before being brought down defense will use a timeout 22 seconds remaining in the game so third and short from inside the 20 you convert here and this drive takes on a different complexion they'll try to get it through the air wide open downfield Oh by himself down the middle the 20 and he gets it into the end zone for the touchdown and it's not just a touchdown it is a
