[Music] very efficient and if you watch her new serve she comes back chest level and shortens the swing so doesn't have too much just good good pickup game Nala she leads now in the second set four games to two she's serving a lot better this set she's hitting a lot with a lot more Authority Monica's not able to set up as much back year old I think she's very lucky her parents coroli and uh Mrs CIS I don't know what her first Esther they come they travel with her and her brother's ultan Martina Got The Good Hop there and took advantage and also her dog Astro travels with her so she kind of brings a little bit of home with her so she's much more happy and of course with all the endorsements and the people pulling on you this way and that you have to have a good Entourage people to protect you n toova leads the tour in animal Entourage Esther and Koli sell us a cartoonist he is and a fine tennis coach but you know Tracy you you did a lot you had a lot of stuff like Monica but you also had your brothers Doug and Jeff and John and and Pam and your mom and your pop and d and you had your own little Entourage and you handled yourself just as well thanks 30 all 30 all to expand NAA tvia on this trip has brought her five dogs and two cats staying with a friend in San Fernando Valley who also has six animals of her own the Murphy's and Sherman Oaks a veritable Zoo good serve yeah it's just like the efficiency of Nolan Ryan age 43 throwing close to 100 miles an hour Martina not in that category yet but very efficient and if you watch her new serve she comes back chest level and shortens the swing so doesn't have too much just good good pickup game naala she leads now in the second set four games to two NAA leads 14 she's serving a lot better this set she's hitting a lot with a lot more Authority Monica's not able to set up as much got back dead [Applause] all right now she's got a great back hand not so much on the front side but when she had her chance there she ran around the ball and hit it with the two-handed side as you watch okay now she moves around it is that because then she can move it further with that hand get more angle on that side maybe it's interesting Tracy Monica strings her racket as tightly as anybody correct she's apparently stringing it at 75 lbs this week and the maximum is what 80 the tightest I've ever heard is BL Borg at 80 mhm I understand yesterday she wanted it strong at 80 they attempted it and two rackets snapped 15 1530 it's her second double fault she's just changed to a new racket this is their first tournament with the Yonex sure it's going to take a little bit of time to get used to it complely looks like it's St there at least 3 4 minutes she really actually I think it's helped her serve a lot it's lighter in the head 1540 double fault again I beg your pardon I was going with the chair on fire second serve right right down the middle Martina hit that coming in shot right down the middle and cut down content to stay back and it worked that time that was interesting I think she could have taken a couple of those and gone to the net but she chose to stay back it's fascinating to me if she can beat Monica from the baseland I'll go down and salute her you know Monica has a different attitude on some of her serves today like that last one she just got it in and kind of was stepping back when she finished her serve whereas yesterday she was really going for her serve wa it's out I did not hear a call but it's 30 all when Monica goes in that it's like going into the men's bathroom or something and making a mistake you know she just has the funniest look on her face like whoops think I'm in the wrong place [Music] double fall 30 40 Monica Third and break point again she just took that ball and hit it behind her back she's not very happy with herself but they better hold up there for a minute set point for Martina big ch [Applause] artina breaks back and wins the second set we're all even at one set a [Applause] piece the difference in the two sets what do you think I think it depended on who was more offensive in the first set Monica had control of a point she was hitting deeper she was running Martina all over and Martina was hitting Too Short Martina serve improved in the second set and she was more dominant in the points Nick let's take a look at Match Point again or I'm defensive second serve Monica attacks gives her another break point oh game to sell us and if that's a harbinger of things to come in this final set as Vic Bren would say we will have a barn burner huh Mara is so angry at herself you know Vic she missed another forehand volley into the net right it's just you know when uh when youngsters have a tendency to do that and we try to get them to out there that we set balloons up and things at a certain height over the net and hit low volleys so they realize they can play that baby up there a foot or something but that shows just how tight you rush for it a little bit and your racket goes straight out instead of giving you a little bit of that lift you need right I think she needs to get under the ball more let's check the second set statistics one by naara toova and there in lies the story 64 Martina and 58 for Monica you really want to be around the 70% Mark and nine unforced airs for Monica I think that's the most she's made this week yeah well at least since it rained last time in LA that's right Martina Nava's record this year is 45 and three and of course one of those matches was against Monica celis and Trace you know that's very similar to Stephie graphs record you know that I think stephie's like 47 and three or 46 and three so look what you got going in there and then right behind that and you start taking a look at celus who says hey look don't count me out baby I might might want the French Open I might be in the middle of this sandwich that's what makes this year's US Open coming up so exciting because I think there's three distinct um people that could really win it and then a few more On The Fringe that have a possibility ooh what did I see there Trace that's the softest 70 mph stay she said stay with it she kind of pulled around on the ball well she is so right the ball does not know that you're in a tough match it only knows if you address it properly swing properly uh nope that was a strange choice of shots there trace an underspin forehand shot you know she made that last time about 1966 I would say i' say the grunt is coming on now Trace it's louder on the ser 40 15 405 although your studies Vic show that the grunt at least in tennis does not make a difference well it it we're saying psychologically it could make a lot of difference and it forces people to breathe but when we did studies on speed it did not change anything was not significant look out that's where Martina has to be we've talked about it so many times before she has to come in with that great coming in shot she hit it right down the middle Monica didn't have the angle pow out game cus and she leads in the final set two games to love she's making some unforced airs she's got to figure out how she got back into that second set and won It Martina just doubled over what's think she was just angry at herself thing come on she just couldn't scream it real loud I'd suggest for Martina right now a double grunt that'll work too right but you know talking about that grunt we found that some players use a grunt for rhythm and it and it really helps them but we found some people who grunted lost power some who grunted gained a little but insignificant classic tennis right there slice into that backhand Corner hit the volley into the other other side and first serving Trace which I think so important that you're talking about getting that serve in that allows her to get in there where she's the most comfortable still got a chance yes naaa trying to anticipate which way it would go and she guessed wrong but that's smart play to guess cuz when you're you're in this case you could be 0 for 80 but if you guess you're 50/50 so you're jock King there smart went the other way 40 another good serve it's really the difference in the first game of the third set Martina didn't serve well 85 milph we when we did Jimmy Connors he averag 73 mph when he was the best player in the world what a return Martine is also with the wind now especially going this way the wind is now blowing to Monica cel's left side so she throws in a slice it's going that the way that flag was blowing there is out of way to not Monica's left side and she went down the center still first serve he's blowing a little bit towards us also game n toova as it is good for the ace and NAA moves to within one game painted those little Tom and Jerry cartoon characters on the balls that she would practice hitting and really paid off and Martinez shot was not bad at all it wasn't that short [Music] Martina I mean when Monica has that Target she just picks her side and goes for it I would say it's not bad she's Louise but each time if I were Martina I'd spend my time learning to read her shots Jame cus she now leads three games to one you know you're going to be playing this girl a lot I'd be doing doing a lot of highspeed filming of her you know Monica and then looking at for every little queue you could get because you're going to have to buy milliseconds against Monica unbelievable she's there every time has good anticipation love the game not bad un Trace I mean look at this that was a nice deep shot back there still she could do nothing about it 90 mph big serve she could use one right now he loses this game yuck oh no that was indecision right there she didn't know whether to let it go and maybe it would go out and she decided to hit it at the last second that was kind of a lazy shot well in my opinion when you're in that position drop it buy some time and loosen the arm but she had a stiff arm overhead boy that even if it goes in it's not too effective not against Monica out out 1530 me she miss one do you believe it I think that's exactly the way Martina's feeling right now it's like what can I do she's playing so well unforced erors even but the name of the game though is passing shots at the key time for Monica and Martinez not playing that poorly and first serves for Martina you said it Vic you said It Martina doesn't get that first serve in she's a dead duck sitting up there Martina moves I mean Monica moves inside the Baseline twists everything into the shot so the whole year from this week from last week last year they are accumulating exactly in other words from this date last year to this date today right it take the whole year 29 that tells you a little bit doesn't it 16 out 153 1530 hey 13 is the difference on that and 13 is not a very nice number for Martina winners Paul little bit late on that forehand she hasn't been successful but she's had the shot and and that's going to if had she been making that shot all day this could be a very different match but in my opinion Trey she's looking up early when she's making that shot she's not staying still in there you're always in there in a tennis match that's what's so great can always come back just like Zena Garrison almost did yesterday the crowd wanting her to come back think they want to see more tennis terrific through it all she maintains a wonderful sense of humor say Martine not been far enough out in front and pulling her head down God great volley great volley you know I was going to say how well Monica stayed down on her shot and then Martinez stayed even more down bent her knees on that volley this is the way that her coach Billy Jean I'm sure has taught her to hit that backhand volley she comes in beautifully moves beautifully you missed it she hit another beautiful one hey how about that now the this is what she did not do on a few shot she didn't come in with that authority of which she's she has such great Fame great serve she's been on fire this particular game 4 love 40 [Applause] love that'sa sis lead the final set five games to two Tracy Vic we see Monica celos of Yugoslavia great young player Stephie graph of Germany great young player where are the the young American Tracy Austin types uh the young Billy Jean Kings what about the American women tennis players are there any budding stars on the horizon there and and how do we continue to develop them well they are doing that now in the United States ten Association and others are going out into the school systems and getting that job done I think Jennifer capriotti obviously I mean many people think that she's going to dominate tennis one day but in my opinion the what really happened was Tracy Austin Stephie graph Billy Jean King and all those people did so much for the game that now they're 10,000 good players and as a result it's very difficult to pick anybody that tells you that somebody's going to dominate this game I think they're really going to be wrong you know Tony there are a lot of great young girls out there right now of course Vic talked about Jennifer capriotti she's only 14 and she has so much potential and Mary Joe Fernandez is also from the United States she lost in the semi-finals yesterday there's young Stephanie rahy I think there are a lot of girls and as Vic said the USA is getting much more involved so we hope to see some some young ones coming up me include a a Young Chris ever to that list of Monica's parents travel with her everywhere very supportive probably very nervous right now 15 that's the difference to whether you know he has to carry a check for 28,000 or 7 something, it make you a little nervous o [Music] smart there that drop shot you talked about if you don't make it perfect you're you're dead yeah and she's now to take a low percentage shot and then at a time like this you're not in a gambling situation you lose this game man you're in the locker room right after you get a big check excuse me that's but not the best choice of shots in my opinion boy Hannah to Martina lot of pressure she still threaded that needle down the line 1530 not easy to do when you're hanging on for your life you know sometimes Vic this is the easiest time to hit out because you're so far down in a match you just go for it it's when if she was to get it back 54 that's where there's more tension double break point for na toova I know that sounds ridiculous oh that's what sound smart drop shot l boy you can you believe how vulnerable Monica looked when she came to the net it literally looked like she was playing a different sport I mean from a very commend look to just hopeless up there at the net but how do you get her up there now Martina used that drop shot with some guts got her up there may get her thinking again she's gotten one service break back she stays alive so six things well the crowd loves Martina it's wonderful to see she fought crowds for so long I think everybody has a tremendous respect for Martina she's won everything and won everything so many times I think even more than that trace for me is people don't realize how many good things she's done charity events and things uh-oh Look Out Boy Martina wasn't going to let that call slip away Martina is putting her hand down flat her game changed dramatically she's ignited in the last two games can she keep it up she's playing with more Authority and Trac I think we ought to do a number on oursel she misused a drop shot but then the next one she used a Beau used it beautifully tactically so so I take my hat off to Martina for [Music] [Applause] that W Martinez finally she took the 4 hand went down the line she had missed about five out of five that is class as you say you're down four five it's harder to do it now ooh what's Happening Here out love 30 comes down to all the marbles right now now I think Monica's going to hit that serve and then she said wait a minute I've thrown in two put her in the game she couldn't do it look for Martina to come in you're right there look what happens obviously Monica was Court she's late she got to get around the ball and through it chuckle for Martina and you know when she was out hitting with her coach Craig C she kept coaching get your racket back early get your racket back she was coaching the coach to do the same thing F okay she can pull it off twice he dead did yep what a return it jammed her in her body and she still was able to come up with such a great shot and Monica put a lot more Pace on that second serve but Martina hit a wonderful shot [Applause] Bara breaks and we're even whoa think I even heard Martina grunting on that last shot what tennis everybody is standing up yes indeed well I'll tell you I am I salute Martina I salute Monica I mean they're still out there pounding that baby but Martina had many opportunities to lay down and dive she was down she did not do Vic down 51 she's back serving goodness gracious the people would pay 7,000 a ticket for this match what a what a pick up by Martina good hands just to get it but to get it and get it back deep really firm this is usually where Monica tries to attack get on the offensive exactly like that it'sit one and then it sets out the opportunity for her to hit it in the other [Music] [Applause] Corner well she needed that one don't drop your chin now she manages a smile but she's not happy she was pushing but Monica nailed her on the inside but she kind of froze on that down here's where the stuff is for me can she come up there crack a second sir cuz she knows Monica is just going to take the hair off of it oh no two forehand Vols in the net just in that game game cus and she now leads 65 well Trace six5 4 hand volley into the net on the key points maybe Monica knows that because she certainly goes back into that forehand side low if she can talk about having about three games what do you think she's going to be doing out there now this is when you have to tell yourself to just go for it because usually when she was hitting it in the net it was because she was pulling her head down kind of hitting a nervous serve in order to get it in you've got to reach up snap the wrist and just go for it but you know Trace what often happens is people get it up to 55 their way down and then immediately lose the next game that happens over and over again too much of a let down [Music] pulled her head up just as she hit that ball race the racket hit it on the frame 15 love outou 15o 15 all good ey boy Martina has hit a couple of pretty forceful shots there 15 30 well now I haven't seen her do that I mean that she just went limp on that maybe she's tired maybe she's nervous I think it's the second one great angle that's remarkable ball carried so far out of the Court Martina never had a prayer well you throw that high bouncer to and if she's set she increases that angle so much Monica is dynamite if you let her get inside that court on a high ball well there's where you need Top Spin if you're going to hit a high ball this is where Martina last to me is not it's that they were having trouble closing it out when they were ahead but when they've played so beautifully from behind but one of them is going to end that in just a second the first player to get seven points and win by two [Music] wins oh did she turn early ooh too eager to get back into court the ball doesn't care about those problems CU you got to treat the ball with great respect the serve now goes to celus and the serve will alternate every two brilliant that was not a high percentage shot but she got away with it a let cord drop shot in the tie breaker oh Martina was on the run there she wasn't even set it's tough shot oh everybody's on their feet I can't believe it Tracy Austin applauded that one well she read the shot finally and and then had and it was hit so well but she still made it boy you knew she was coming in on this look the last ounce of work that's what you worked that extra half hour for in the gym Tracy I agree that's weight work on your wrist right there uhoh forehand again nous forehand undecided yep [Music] to all that wind is coming up he got to hand it to him goodness gracious but I hand it to to Martina she went in on that second SE of cour can't go for the winner then but Monica hit a great serve crowd loves it that's what they came here for and are they being entertained all these photographers are jocking to get on the other really is uncorking it there and then yes yes yes 34 third set tiebreaker they're back on serve in this tiebreaker nice her seventh Ace for all remember you need seven points you must win by two boy point and Trace it's so hard to take that high volley and hit back down the line it's not an overhead as you know and you're always even when you're hitting it you don't feel good about it and then to closer than that how did you feel out there today oh I mean when I got to 51 I thought well this is it and then she just kept coming back and I mean I just at five all I thought well it's unbelievable to come back and then when I broke her I thought well I have her now and then again I didn't have her so it's really an on andof Match but there so much excitement I couldn't let go for a minute and can't believe that I won in such a close match well the US Open is only a week away how do you feel going into that well I'm feeling pretty much confident this win can help me a lot because I beat on a hard court the open will be totally game and I hopefully I can play a little better there than here because it's a grand slam it would be a tough competition I think between Stephie Martina and interesting to me because when they got ahead they were having a little bit more time trouble closing it out than when they were behind they really hit out much harder when they were behind but most important for me is a 16-year-old has now serve notice that Martina who played a beautiful match can still be had by Monica celis boy that's going to give her a great lift going into fleshing Meadows
