GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN DEADLINE LOOMS AT THE END OF THIS MONTH. AND ON TO DECISION 2024. WE ARE GETTING NEW REACTION THIS AFTERNOON TO THE FIRST PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE BETWEEN VICE PRESIDENT KAMALA HARRIS AND FORMER PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP. THE TWO THEY FOUGHT ARE OVER THE ECONOMY, IMMIGRATION D REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS DURING THE 90 MINUTE DEBATE LAST NIGHT. NOW, IT IS UNCLEAR IF THERE WILL BE A SECOND DEBATE WITH TRUMP SAYING THAT THIS MORNING HE WASN'T SURE IF HE WANTED TO PARTICIPATE IN ANOTHER ONE. SO I AM JOINED NOW BY POLLSTER RICHARD ZUBA. AND RICHARD, THANKS FOR JOINING US THIS AFTERNOON. AND I'M SURE YOU WERE WATCHING VERY INTENTLY LAST NIGHT. SO GIVE US YOUR OVERALL IMPRESSION OF THE DEBATE. WHAT DID YOU THINK ABOUT IT? >> WELL, LAST NIGHT WHEN I WATCHED THIS, I THOUGHT IT WAS A BAD DEBATE FOR DONALD TRUMP. AND IN THE LIGHT OF DAY, I THINK IT'S EVEN WORSE. AND I SAY THAT SPECIFICALLY BECAUSE OF THE RAMIFICATIONS OF ONE ANSWER, AND THAT IS DONALD TRUMP'S ANSWER ON ABORTION. IT WAS ALL OVER THE MAP. IT WAS UNCLEAR. AND TWICE HE WAS OFFERED THE OPPORTUNITY TO SAY HE WOULD VETO A NATIONAL BAN. AND HE DECLINED TO SAY THAT. SO HE'S SENDING HIGHLY CONFLICTING MESSAGES ON THIS AT A TIME THAT VICE PRESIDENT HARRIS IS VERY CLEAR ON HER POSITION. AND I THINK THAT IS GOING TO CAUSE HIM AND A LOT OF REPUBLICANS ADDITIONAL PROBLEMS ON THAT ISSUE. >> NOW, WHAT ABOUT KAMALA HARRIS? DO YOU THINK THAT SHE DID WHAT SHE NEEDED TO DO? DID SHE FALL SHORT ANYWHERE? >> YOU KNOW, I THINK SHE HAD A VERY GOOD NIGHT. I THINK SHE MISSED SOME OPPORTUNITIES. I THINK THE FIRST ANSWER OUT OF THE BOX WHERE ASKED HER, ARE YOU BETTER OFF THAN YOU WERE FOUR YEARS AGO, WAS PROBABLY HER WEAKEST ANSWER OF THE NIGHT. AND I THINK THAT COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER OR STRENGTHENED. BUT OVERALL, I HAVE TO SAY SHE HAD A GOOD DEBATE. SHE SET THESE, YOU KNOW, IT'S INTERESTING. SHE SHE TELEGRAPHED THAT SHE WAS GOING TO SET TRAPS FOR DONALD TRUMP. AND YET DONALD TRUMP WALKED INTO EVERY SINGLE TRAP SHE SET. AND THAT WAS REALLY PART OF WHY DONALD TRUMP DID SO POORLY. HE COULDN'T STAY ON MESSAGE OF THE ECONOMY AND IMMIGRATION, AND HE KEPT GOING DOWN. RABBIT HOLES IN TRAPS THAT SHE SET. >> NOW, I KNOW YOU SAID DONALD TRUMP HAD A POOR DEBATE IN YOUR OPINION, BUT WAS THERE ANYWHERE THAT YOU THOUGHT HE SUCCEEDED? >> WELL, YOU KNOW, I DON'T THINK HE DID VERY WELL, QUITE HONESTLY. I DON'T THINK THERE WERE HIGH POINTS. YOU KNOW, WE SEE IN THE POLLING THAT ON THE ECONOMY AND ON IMMIGRATION, HE HAS DOUBLE DIGIT LEADS WITH VOTERS IN THAT HE DOES BETTER WITH ON THOSE ISSUES. IF HE HAD STUCK TO THOSE ISSUES AND TALKED, YOU KNOW, TIED HARRIS TO BIDEN, HE WOULD HAVE HAD A MUCH BETTER PERFORMANCE. BUT HE DIDN'T DO THOSE THINGS. AND FRANKLY, HE HAD A REALLY SIMPLE TASK IN THE IN IN DOING THOSE, HER TASK WAS FAR MORE DIFFICULT. >> AND IS THERE A MOMENT OR TWO FROM EACH CANDIDATE THAT REALLY STICKS OUT TO YOU, ONE THAT REALLY IS MAKING ROUNDS TODAY? >> YEAH, I THINK THERE ARE A COUPLE OF MOMENTS I, YOU KNOW, ONE OF THOSE MOMENTS WAS CLEARLY WHEN DONALD TRUMP TALKED ABOUT IMMIGRATION AND KIND OF DELVED INTO THIS TERRITORY OF IMMIGRANTS ARE EATING PEOPLE'S DOGS AND CATS. >> I THINK THAT MOMENT IS GOING TO LIVE IN POLITICAL LORE FOR QUITE SOME TIME TO BE HONEST, IT WAS A VERY BAD MOMENT FOR DONALD TRUMP, SO I THINK THAT REALLY STUCK OUT. I THINK WHAT STUCK OUT FOR ME WITH VICE PRESIDENT HARRIS WAS SHE KEPT TALKING ABOUT THIS PHRASE, TURN THE PAGE. IT'S TIME TO TURN THE PAGE. AND I THINK THAT RESONATED. I THINK IT'S GOING TO STICK. AND I THINK WE'RE GOING TO SEE HER USE IT CONTINUOUSLY AT THE SAME TIME. THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME VOTERS HAD A CHANCE TO REALLY SEE HER IN ACTION ON THIS BIG STAGE. AND SHE WAS VERY CALM AND VERY MEASURED AND POISED. AND I THINK THAT ASSESSMENT OF HER, THAT VIEW OF HER THAT VOTERS ARE GOING TO HAVE IS GOING TO SERVE HER WELL. >> ALL RIGHT.
