Eastern California where the Sierra Nevada mountains give way to wide open grasslands spring runoff from the snow covered Peaks quenches the parched land yielding nutrient Rich [Music] pastures were there this much grass there are grazers Mustangs iconic symbols of America's Wild West when spring hits large bands of wild horses Converge on the plains which flush green with new growth hundreds gather but with within the great herd each horse belongs to a smaller band a group of perhaps 30 and each band has its leaders first there's the Trail Boss the alpha female she runs the show keeping the herd in line and leading the way [Music] and then there's the Wrangler the stallion he's the protector this Herm belongs to him these are his charges a band of females who follow their leaders as [Music] one Mustangs were introduced by the Spanish explorers in the 16th century they've been roaming free ever since these horses are as wild as they [Music] come each day they journey in search of fresh pasture different bands graze together the Open Fields allow for running and cl bogs provide respit to quench their [Music] thirst mosquitoes burst from the water and flies swarm all around a constant irritation pawing the ground breaks the dirt into fine Alkali dust good for relieving itchy skin and for those hard to- reach places there is always help from the herd with plenty of water and fresh green grass spring is the perfect time for [Music] fos their constant energy keeps them thirsty from milk the new arrivals enjoy the collective protection of the [Music] herd but it won't last forever the Wrangler has his eye on the youngsters eventually most young males will become a threat and the Wrangler will drive him out from his band this young buck no longer has the safety of his mother's herd but he's found other loners exiled adolescence they ban together now they're a gang these guys are tough raw unpolished they follow few rules a traveling posy of brash Bachelors but they do have a leader he's a stallion in the making and the urge to breed is is kicking in he needs to find some mares and he's been tracking the wrangler's band ever since he was exiled from his mother's [Music] herd with the trail boss and the Wrangler leading the way the band sets off in search of New Pasture [Music] the gang of Bachelors slowly follows shadowing their every move they hang back watching from a distance but their presence is noted the band eyes them cautiously the young Bachelors are losing patience whipping their tails twitching their ears they test the [Music] air there's a female in heat it's time they're coming the Wrangler braces for battle The Bachelors come charging in corralling the females but the Wrangler swoops in to break up the gang it's a battle of wills Young Blood against a fearless leader the Wrangler won't back [Music] down experience wins the day and his Herm is secure for now defeated the gang retreats they won't be gone for long it's a ritual as old as time the young rise up to contest the old each must find their place in the Herd on the open grasslands of wild California [Music]
