friendship isn't the big things it's a million little things hello there friends and welcome to this another episode of a million little TV shows podcast this is where we break down and discuss episodes of TV shows that you may not have even heard of I believe these TV shows need a little more love and that is what this platform is here to do each week we will be covering different shows from all over the globe we'll be breaking down each episode giving you the main highlights and going through it bit by bit but for now I think it's best that we find out what's on the menu [Music] today hello there and welcome back to this a million little TV shows podcast now as for today's episode this is going to be episode 6 of season 5 and I'm not sure how I'm going to go through this episode I'm actually thinking about changing the format a little bit due to the fact that a million little things is ending and I'm just going to start to play around a little bit especially with this kind of Series where it is pretty much the same characters all the way through and the episodes all center around a central theme I like just try and switch it up a little bit for these episodes and just see how it feels as for today by the way we're going to be covering a new show that we haven't done before and it's called Kevin can [ __ ] himself this is based around all sort of late '90s early 2000's comedies where the patriarch of the show was basically a ripoff of Homer Simpson and he was a bit of a DA character and one of the things I've seen is someone who was played by Kevin James I can't remember what show it was but like Mike and Molly or something along those lines something where the lead male is a buffoon and the wife just puts up with him but it's a Twist on that sort of genre of Comedy where basically when he is in the room the room is in full color but when he's out of the room the room dulls and you get to see how Annie Murphy who is playing the lead female feels about when he isn't in the room and it's that light and dark situation where you can see how much she is playing up towards his character when he is there but when he's not She [ __ ] hates him and so let's do the cast list before we get into the episode so Annie Murphy is playing Allison Divine McRoberts Mary Hol inan is playing Patricia Patty diodrio Conor Eric Peterson is playing Kevin McRoberts Alex bonifer is playing Neil o' Conor Brian how plays Peter Pete McRoberts and Raymond Lee plays Samuel Park so in this episode it's going to be covering season 1 and I'm going to be looking at episodes 1 to 4 and like I say I don't know if I'm going to do break down per episode or just run through give you the highlights of everything that's gone on but I'm sure we'll find out as we go but just in case I will give you the title episodes that I'm going to be covering so episode one is living the dream episode two is New Tricks episode three is we're selling washing machines and episode four is Live Free or Die and so with that being said let's get into the episode okay so from the GetGo of the show you can see the kind of basic format that it's going to take the man that she's married to is an absolute buo and it's one of those relationships where you sort of see the man and the woman together and kind of go how how did that happen he's a bumbling idiot and she is well she's Ellie Murphy so if you've seen shitak you know exactly who she is she's Alexis and she's very very beautiful and so as they're going through you're seeing that the contrast between both when he's in the room and when she's on her own and the contrast between the two is like a lighthearted comedy like Everybody Loves Raymond or friends or something along those lines versus Shameless so whenever Annie Murphy's on her own is dark is dingy is grimy but when he is in the room there's a brightness F to put on everything pops out the screen and especially him and so Allison's character in each scene every time that she is with Kevin he is very down on her he looks like he's lifting her up he looks like he's being a good person person but actually he's just talking down to her the whole time and he makes her feel minute and it's absolutely ridiculous the way that he treats his wife and of course nobody else around her sees this they all just see Kevin has this great happy fun good time but Allison she wants out she wants to go and live somewhere else she wants them to move out the neighborhood I assume at this point that they're renting the house that they are in because she makes a comment about them being homeowners if they go and get this brand spanking new home and it seems like for the last 10 years they've been saving up and as Allison says halfway through the episode she's bad with money she confesses it to Patty and she says that she is really bad with money and that that the only way that she could possibly save the money that she needs to do this big move is to give it to Kevin but Patty tells her the reality of the situation isn't that she can trust Kevin with money Kevin is just as bad and apparently all his death schemes are a result of him having access to this account and this account has been wiped out so now Allison just doesn't know what to do you can see throughout the episode that this is the first episode I'm talking about you can see that he is an idiot he has these stupid ideas and all he wants to do is make sure that he is having a good time in whatever he is doing regardless of what his wife wants as long as he and his friends are happy he doesn't care about what Allison wants and so particularly in this episode he has a party and it's the classic TV show Trope kind of party where he invites someone who he doesn't want to actually be there he didn't think they'd attend and they actually are and so he's put his wife in a room with a man who is apparently boring and he's having a party out back with all his friends and having loads of beer and whatever and the reason that she has ended up green to this is because she thinks that the next day they're going to go to the bank they're going to sort out this mortgage and they're going to go and buy a new house but what I actually happens is he spent all the money and he still gets his way and so you really feel sorry for her you feel sorry for her in the fact that she's been stuck with this guy for 10 years but also there is one positive to this and that is that they haven't had kids because if there were kids involved in this situation it would make it a hell of a lot harder but when Allison finds out that he has spent all this money from Patty she runs off she goes off for the night and does something that generally she wouldn't do she breaks into where she works which is a liquor store and goes and takes some booze and chugs it on the way home she then ends up littering in the street throwing a bottle around and ends up talking to a very forward mechanic from previous in the episode where basically he was trying to hit on her but she wasn't having any of it and now it looks like she was going to do something him but all she ends up doing is taking Coke and complaining about how bad her husband is but when she realizes they're not even listening to her she's like what the [ __ ] is wrong with people why aren't they listening to me she eventually goes back home and Patty tells her that basically he's in the kitchen he's willing to apologize he's seen that he's done the bad thing and he just wants to make it up to you but when she goes in there she finds him making the worst apology ever essentially he sits down at a table where he set it out looking like he's cooked for her but he hasn't and throughout the episode whenever she gets this sort of anxiety attack this feeling of dread about her husband she gets that buzzing sound sometimes that you'll get when you're just on one when you ju I mean I'm speaking from experience I've had these anxiety attacks where you just can't your brain goes all fuzzy and you get a ringing in your ears and you are just on edge at all times and that is what she's getting and for the first time when he is in the room and she breaks a glass it all goes to the dull color palette that is there when Kevin isn't even though Kevin's in the room it's dull and it's at this point and it's at this point when she takes the glass handle that she's just smashed and stabs him in the neck but of course at this point it's all a fantasy she doesn't actually do it but she keeps the glass handle and when she walks away to treat herself he basically says I'm I can't wait to find out what you're going to cook for me and you just feel so sorry for this poor woman because this guy is just a dick and yet she's ended up having 10 years of this and it's a waste of someone who seems to just want to better her life whereas he just thinks this is the best that life can give so with the way that Kevin treats her Allison just needs to get out of there and when she ends up having a dream about actually killing him we realize how far this has gone for her now it's been 10 years of absolute dog [ __ ] and she's only just started to realize it she's only just starting to come around to it but when the thought of Killing Him crosses her mind she ends up getting woken up by him and she doesn't even know how the story ends so she doesn't know what to do she knows that the solution is to kill him but how and this is what she's going to have to find out and so she starts thinking about different types of scenarios so she ends up going to a library and then while she's there she encounters a dead body and it's only when the EMT suggests that maybe this guy was on oxy that she thinks that that's the thing because it's something that doesn't discriminate so she thinks that maybe him having an overdose would be the best but now I mean she has no idea and no one to really talk to about this outside of the people that she knows and the only people that she knows really are Kevin Patty Neil and Pete they're the people that have been around her for the last 10 years and she's isolated herself from everyone else even when her old friend Sam comes back into town things are awkward between them it seems that they had a good past but there's nothing really there anymore because they don't know each other she's stuck around in this one place and he's come back and opened a cafe but any affection or love or care or any friendship that they used to have isn't there anymore and so she is literally alone and she finds this out pretty much straight away she ends up speaking to Patty because Kevin has ended up getting into a feud with his neighbors because he thinks that they stole a hoodie from him but actually Allison stole the hoodie because it was a gift to Kevin from Kevin and she thought he was massively selfish as he was during their anniversary party and so she took it for herself but he's got this whole grand scheme of things to make sure that the neighbor does pay for whatever they've done but they haven't done anything so he starts a war with them just to be a prick and again it's the cringe comedy type of well comedy that I don't really enjoy and but I find the contrast of the two shows being merged into one like I said it's very much everyone loves Raymond versus Shameless so when Allison ends up speaking to Patty and is just about to tell her that she's the one who stole the hoodie just so she's got someone to talk to Patty tells her that me and you have nothing in common common and I don't really like talking to you and it's kind of you feel it stray away how alone she is and now she's got this thought of murder on her mind she wants to kill Kev and that's it and so she needs to find a way to do it she's gone to the doctors and they won't prescribe her with any drugs plus there's a paper trail there and so she decides that because she got Coke from the guy at the garage she's going to go there and see if he's got anything but again he tells her that they're not friends there's nothing between them and and when he arranges something for her she ends up putting herself in a situation where she almost gets raped and the guy who actually comes along he's a bit of a soccer dad and nothing actually happens but he drives her to the middle of this parking lot and gets in the back with her when she thinks that she's getting drugs he thinks that he's getting sex and it's just a [ __ ] mess but now she's really starting to risk things just to make sure that she can get out of her life cuz she's sick of him but she just doesn't want to leave and so with Kevin being so much of an idiot he tries to defend his home against the neighbors because he's literally started a war with them and one of the measures of security is that he gets cameras outside the house but he also gets a dog and when Allison sees this dog she can instantly fall in love with it and knows that a it can't talk and B it won't judge and so she starts to open up to this dog as well but instantly that's pretty much ripped away from her because Kevin's selfish and he just keeps doing stuff for himself and ends up giving the dog back even though now she has got a bond with it eventually after all of this Allison remembers that she got a note from someone at the doctor's office and goes to see who these people are because she's been told that they can get her a little something and that maybe just maybe she can finally start to get out of this nightmare and live her life properly but of course when she gets to this Salon who's there cutting hair who's the one who is able to get these drugs it's [ __ ] Patty and now she has to explain what the hell's going on and why she's doing this and the more and more she tries to get out of this situation the more and more she seems to be getting dragged back in the only person that she can really talk to is Sam and when she does or tries to he and her end up getting into an argument so so you really pulling for Allison but but she just keeps getting held back by this [ __ ] buffoon and you just want her out so we end up finding out how Patty came into doing this and it seems like four years earlier she she met a guy who's a pharmacist and when Neil Neil is her brother ended up getting into an accident and hurting his leg she went in and got some pain meds for him but when the pharmacist told her we could get her something a little bit more generic she was like I don't need that but then as her client started to come into the salon and they were feeling a bit of pain or whatever it was she decided you know what I do need it I'm going to start helping these people out because they're in vain but now 4 years on she's basically a pill Pusher and she's still getting the supply from the pharmacist we end up seeing something that we haven't really seen before throughout episode 3 because we see things from Patty's point of view as well and basically Patty sees exactly the same as what Allison does whenever she's around Kevin it's all light and fluffy and great and [ __ ] amazing and when she's away from him that's it it's all dull and drab and so later on Allison realizes that Pat's in the same boat as her she hates the fact that Kevin and Neil have these grandiose ideas and these stupid plans and they do stupid [ __ ] and she hates it just as much as Allison does and so after a while they started to bond over the fact that they hate men in their life Allison hates her husband and Patty hates her brother and we also see that when Patty ends up getting with her boyfriend she hates that too it's dull it's boring there's no excitement in their lives and that was the only time that Patty felt alive when she was dealing throughout the episode every time we see G it's just a familiar situation he and Neil have ended up falling out and they've g into an argument over some chili and they're now having a chili cook off and it's exactly what you'd expect from that kind of TV show that kind of cringe comedy TV show where basically they're just sniping each other and they're bitching at each other and they're being dicks to each other but it doesn't resolve anything until they talk but it's only because Patty and Allison bring them together to talk about it we also end up seeing the fact that Allison had a previous relationship with Sam that they start to come together and Allison goes to apologize to him for the previous night and tells him that she was in the wrong and that she was stupid for what she did and that she just wants to have him back in her life it's nice to see him again after all this time and he tells her look I've got an AA meeting tonight and it's going to be my 8 year and basically they ask you to bring people along he asks if she wants to come and Allison of course says yes she's excited to be in his life again and it's the only excitement she actually gets outside of the relationship and the Rel relationship's not [ __ ] great because of the way he is so it just makes sense to her to be able to have something to look forward to even if it is just an AA meeting but it means that she is spending time with someone that she actually enjoys being around and she also tells Patty how when they were younger her and Sam used to fall around behind his now wife's back and Patty thinks that maybe something's going to happen between the two of them and and Allison doesn't want to putting out there just yet that something might happen but when she's at this meeting and his wife isn't there she gets very flirtatious with him and it's only when his wife turns up that she stops eventually Patty asked the question because obviously Allison wants these pills for some reason and when a whole situation happens where where Patty can no longer get these pills and Alison is so desperate for them because she wants to kill her husband with them Patty has to ask why she wants them and at first Allison is about to confess but but ends up using the story that Sam used in his speech for his 8 years to basically say that this is what's happened and she's got herself into trouble and now she needs the drugs to pay someone back Patty tells her that there is one last person that they can go and see but they're going to need to go together and they're going to have to and they're going to have to plan a road trip to Vermont and so with the fact that they need this oxy now both p and Allison have to drive out to Vermont and it seems that Kevin's had another hairbrained idea when he decides he's going to start an escape room in their house in their basement and Allison's just afraid to leave him alone because he's such a [ __ ] idiot at times he doesn't know what he's going to be getting into next but she has this plan now and this is the only way out for her she has to get rid of him because otherwise he'll pull her back in it seems like she's tried to get away from him or at least away from this life before when she speaks to Patty later on and she tells her that she has been in a situation where she got a job and he ruined it for her because he started spreading it around that she was having an affair with the boss and then ended up putting sugar in his gas tank and all Patty did was laugh whereas now Patty is seeing the fruits of his labor because while he's created this escape room and he's created this scheme to basically defraud these people he's ended up getting locked inside the basement and so while Allison's been out all day he's been trying to call her and as he's trying to call her each time Allison's been like I need to answer this and Patty's been like no just put it to voicemail just let it ring out it doesn't matter and she's like no I have to answer this but Patty never lets her and then ends up turning the phone off so while they're out on the road they end up getting into some mad situations at one point they go to this house there's a bunch of kids in this house I say kid they're probably mid to 18s but also some are a little older and and they try and pick up these oxies but this kid has traded them for something else and so they end up getting this cocaine so they're told to go to see if they can trade it with the person who bought the oxies so they head out to find another guy and then Patty ends up going into the woods with this real sketchy couple and when Patty comes back she's actually got a gun instead and she basically tells Allison that because this guy that Allison's got into hot water with she can use the gun on this guy so Allison's made up this story of basically someone is after her and Pat's like well just use this gun on them now eventually when they've got this gun Patty thinks that she knows somewhere where they can go and so when they stop off at a gas station and Allison ends up making a deal with this guy with a bad leg Patty comes over and smacks the guy thinking that it's actually the person who's been harassing her when the person who's been harassing her is made up she's obviously getting the drugs of Kevin we know this so they basically Rob this guy who's a trucker and jump back in the car and drive off on their way down the road this is where P plan fails because she has basically looked up to Kevin for all this time and now that's about to bite her in the ass because all of a sudden the cops pull the car over and when they get to the window and start talking to Allison they tell her that Kevin has reported the car has been stolen and Patty realizes now how bad it is for Allison because she's like this is what he does if I go anywhere if I do anything if I try and get away from him he does this and everybody loves him everyone sees me as the bad person and nobody sees him as anything but lovable Kevin and he's an idiot and so when Patty basically says to her look you need to get these people off your back these people that you owe this money to so that you can just start to get on with your life and do what you need to do and Allison tells her there isn't any guy the guy I need these drugs for is Kevin because I'm going to kill him okay so like I said what I really like about this show is the fact that it goes between the very dark and dull tones of when Allison isn't with Kevin to the very cartoonish type of tones that it has when he's around when he's around anyone it has this pallet that is very VI whereas when she's not or when the camera isn't focused on him it's a dull world and that's how these shows used to be portrayed that whenever the lead character the main male throughout the show was there it was incredible it was great it was always a funny situation that they got themselves into they weren't my types of Comedy like I love watching this because of the contrast and also the canned laughter throughout out so whenever Kevin's doing anything there's gasps there's cand laughter there's you know Giggles titters whatever it is throughout but when he's not there it's definely silent and it just makes the contrast between the two situations a lot more loud I suppose is probably the best way to put it it's silent but loud and I just find it fascinating I think the concept of it is brilliant so interesting Dred in and such a clever way to do a TV show now these episodes are 40 minutes long so it's a lot like a million little things but because of the way is shot is basically like two different shows melded together through one character so I'm always fascinated by it and I think it's brilliant I think Annie Murphy does a [ __ ] incredible Job showing the hardships of this poor put up on woman when she has been in this marriage for 10 years and doesn't see it going anywhere where as opposed to Kevin who thinks the world revolves around him and generally in this type of show it did so yeah I can't say enough about it without repeating myself over and over but now I'm going to have to go off and edit this I don't know how it's going to come out um like I said I've done it in a different way to breaking it down Episode by episode I mean part of it was Episode by episode but I haven't gone as far into it with like every little detail because I think the overall concept of it is much better but I'm going to try and keep this short and sweet so as for today that is it next week it's a million little things the final episode and then we will be coming back to finish off this season for episode 8 so as always thank you for today I really hope you guys are doing well out there and I shall speak to you soon bye [Music] and that is it for now Amigos and yes I am as angry
