the Leafs have been doing some things changing some things the most recent of these are of course the Nick Robertson the Yanni hackin pass signing as well as Max Pete being signed to a PTO the Leafs are doing all they can to make sure they have the best team possible heading into the season but they are up against the salary cap how will these additions impact the team in the upcoming season and will it be enough for the Leafs to find greater success my head spin heart raing knowing that you could give me a call [Music] Hello everybody welcome back to my channel I'm Victoria and I talk all things Toronto Sports Toronto Hockey in particular and today we're talking about three things I guess Nick Robertson Yanni hacken PA and Max petti the leaves have been busy this week there's been a lot of news coming out ahead of training camp next week and I thought I would share my thoughts on it as always make sure to subscribe to my channel if you haven't already and also like this video for more content like this and let's get into the video there has been a contract stal made between Nick Robertson and the Leafs for some time now the Leafs drafted him in the second round 5 years ago and he requested a trade back in June making it clear that he didn't want to play for the Leafs anymore he didn't want to be in Toronto and he wanted to play for a different team citing a lack of opportunity as he did only average playing 11 minutes 23 seconds per game last season and he was mostly on the third or fourth line as well however it seems like discussions with new coach Craig barui helped persuade Robertson to sign a deal and so the leaf resigned him on a one-year contract with an $875,000 cap hit this is a great deal for the Leafs because Robertson has value he can score goals and last season he had 14 goals and 13 assists in 56 games it's also a safe bet because if Robertson still wants out at the end of this year he is free to go it's sort of an easy exit for him and for the leaves after then it also offers Robertson more opportunity to play some more get better prove himself and either stay a leaf at the end of this contract or go somewhere else basically Robertson can be really good and sign another deal for more money after this year is up on the Leafs he can get good and he can go somewhere else that he wants to play or very unlikely he has a poor season and the Leafs haven't really risked too much it's a very inexpensive contract for the potential that Robertson has my only concern with this is that I don't love having players on the team whose Hearts aren't 100% there and while I do understand Robertson's frustrations at not getting the amount of playing time he wanted or only being on the third or fourth line and I do understand those frustrations it does concern me that having someone on the team who literally requested a trade and made it blatantly obvious that he didn't want to be in Toronto there is a concern this could have an impact on morale within the team and I'm always a little bit reluctant to see guys that aren't you know 100% invested in the team and given that he seemed like he really wanted out it does worry me that his heart might not be 100% in it and it might affect his performance and it could even affect wider morale around the team Nick Robertson has also had various ailments and injuries over the past few years so that potentially could impact his performance as well but given the money involved and given that it's only one year there is very little risk involved for the Leafs Robertson can also be really useful playing on that left wing where the Leafs really need some extra support right now and it really gives him the opportunity to have more ice time and be further up lineup which is what he wanted in the first place less than a million dollars for a guy who can potentially score up to 20 goals and who has been really looking for an opportunity to prove himself is a bargain in my opinion Robertson really has to take this opportunity now and from training camp into the regular season he has to be going full throttle and I want to see him giving at his best shot and I think he has so much potential that it could turn out really good for the leafes and he could be a great asset for them this year it's nice to see that this long ongoing stal me is finally over it definitely seemed to be more of an issue between Robertson and Sheldon Keef and I was confused why when Craig bruy came in that things hadn't changed but now they have and I'm really excited to see it I think Nick Roberts could have a really good season ahead of him and I'm so excited to see what he can do for this team so as I said the Leafs have been busy this offseason this week the Leafs also announced that they have signed Yanni haena to a one-year contract worth $1.47 million the 32-year-old is a big 6'7 225 defenseman he recorded two goals and 12 points in 64 games with the Dallas Stars last season we have been waiting 2 months for this as far back as July 1st out free agency it was reported that the Leafs had agreed on a 2-year $3 million contract with hacken paa however there was no official signing came out and he wasn't added to the roster so Le fans were sort of wondering what was happening the whole hacken path thing really has been centered around his injury concerns he missed the final 13 games in the Dallas Stars regular season and he missed the entirety of their playoff games with a knee injury which he underwent surgery to treat injury concerns are always an issue it doesn't matter who the player is or really what their role is in the team of course it is a problem but especially for me it's a concern when the main purpose of that player is to be a big physical defenseman a knee injury is really enough to make or break that ability to successfully execute that role and so if hacken Pat is healthy it is a great deal for the Leafs and he can be a real benefit to the team the concern is will he even be fit enough to play he would be great on the penalty kill as well something that leaves could really do with but again it all completely rests on him staying healthy I'm glad to see that the original reporting of it being 2 years is no longer and it's only a one-year contract deal because again same with the Robertson thing it limits the risk only in this case it's not so much to do with execution and potential it's much more to do with will he stay healthy can he get healthy in the first place and can he stay that way for most of the Season as we all know it's in the postseason that the Leafs really need a player like this involved and so even if he were healthy for the first part of the regular season but as the season went on he was worn down really easily and he wasn't playing in the postseason I would say that that's not a good fit for this team this team doesn't have regular season problems this team has postseason issues and so we need players who can stay healthy all the way through the regular season into the postseason and that is my main concern with this signing however I think the money's good and he's he's a great player there's very few players in the NHL who have that size and that ability to use that size to be physical so hacken pass really unique in that aspect as I keep saying as long as he can get healthy in the first place and stay that way I think he will be a great benefit to the Lea he'll be a real asset the problem is will this injury really be a detriment to him the issue and the concern is this injury and whether or not that's going to be a real issue with him going into the season and finally we need to touch on Max Patcher with nearly 1,000 NHL games under his belt Max petti is sort of a leaf the 35-year-old will attend Leaf's training camp next week on a professional try out or a PTO Patti played on a one-year deal with the capitals last season following backto back Achilles tend and tears during his time in Carolina this injury has of course restricted his productivity and last season he only recorded four goals and 19 assists in 47 games you're seeing a trend here the Leafs love to pick up guys who are struggling injury-wise because the leafes think they can fix them and they are good players beneath that injury but it really relies on the leafes being able to patch these guys up I think the reason the leafes have decided to give pater a chance is because the weakest part of the Leaf's roster is arguably on the left wing he could really bolster this area and so this is why probably Leafs have decided to give him this chance to prove his health really more than his ability although at 35 he is definitely getting older and will definitely not be anywhere near the peak that he was previously but I don't think that's what the Leafs are going for here they're definitely looking to just improve an area of weakness on that left wing Jonah seagull for the Athletics stated that the only players with more goals than Pat's 303 from the 2011 to 12 season to the end of the 2021 to 2022 season were avkin stanos Tavarez Kane marshand and pavelski there's a lot of very very good names in there and I thought that was a really compelling start right there and I think it really shows the high quality player that patet has and his legacy in the NHL the kind of player that he is it does look like he is going to be offered a contract that is what sort of the general consensus seems to be he's not going to be able to do what he used to be able to do but as long as he can add Improvement to this area of weakness for the leavs I think that's really all they're looking for in this basically he is a great player who's got a great legacy behind him he's got great stats and numbers to back up his career however he is getting older and those back to back Achilles tend and tears are a little bit of a concern of course the changes that the leaves have made this offseason a lot of them really hinge around injury and health I think they have great faith in their uh Team to get them healthy and I think it really rests on that the impact that a player Like Pat chetti could have for the team there will also need to be some sort of trade because the Leafs are completely up against the salary cap I'm wondering if perhaps Conor Timmons or David Camp might go just to create some space because right now they just do not have the cap space of course there's always the opportunity to put players on ltir but you don't really want to be doing that and I can't imagine that that's the aim there's also the potential that during preseason which is quite a long preseason players might get injured and so it's good to have these different opportunities there for you to be able to pick from so overall I'm very excited that Nick Robertson is back even though I had my concerns over the fact that he didn't seem to want to play in Toronto anymore I think he has a lot of potential and I'm excited to see what he can do hack andp I think could be great for the leavs I'm just really hoping that that knee injury isn't a complete detriment and that he can stay healthy and patet of course is not officially a leaf yet but it seems like that's the way it's going and he's an exciting player he's very compelling and I don't have an issue with there being older players on the team as long as they can still have their own value and role within the roster which I think he can have so those are all my thoughts leave a comment down below how do you feel about these Leaf's changes do you think that they are going to have an impact on what the leaves can do this season leave me your thoughts down below once again make sure to subscribe if you haven't already
