hi welcome rick snyder's washington where you get the exclusive content here on youtube for the longer stories that i tell about the old ricky ones i used to do last year on social media people love and today i'm going to talk about coach ray flaherty who was the redskins coach for the 1937 and 42 championships here's a guy that was really a good coach very innovative and you know they won two titles with them and then he's gone literally from the locker room after the 42 championship he leaves for the navy because world war ii is going on and they need him so literally leaves the celebration locker room heads to basic training what does he do in the navy well he's a lieutenant lieutenant in there and basically they made him a coach you know navy had a big base in idaho which of course we all know is on the ocean don't quite understand that one but okay and he goes to idaho and they make him a fitness instructor and a coach and so of course he grabs all the football players and starts a team and this was a big thing back then uh each base had its own teams and they did pretty well they lost the base championship overall but uh ray coached a lot of guys including washington's ed justice so the war is over what's he doing well watson has a coach it's doing well frankly there's a lot of talk about flaherty and the owner george preston marshall didn't get along so he went ahead and coached the yankees for 1946 to 48 and then did chicago for 1949 before he retires finishes 80 37 and five with seven division titles and two world championships can't beat that and then what's he do at age 47 he retires from the game and goes to run a beer distributorship in idaho back where he was at the base i guess he really loved that area idaho is a beautiful state by the way i think one of the most underrated ones in our country go see it uh so he runs the beer distributive ship all the way until he dies in the 1990s i actually interviewed him one time uh so kind of an interesting guy at that point uh in 1976 he was inducted into the uh pro football hall of fame so one of the great coaches in the of the redskins history that people just don't seem to remember very much all right so that's it for today exclusive content i'll be back on monday with the next round so i'm rick snyder for rick snyder's watson thanks for watching hey make sure you subscribe to youtube for me really could use those subscribers it helps a lot thank you bye
