DELTA FLIGHTS ARE HARDEST HIT AS OF MONDAY EVENING, ROUGHLY 23% OF ALL THE FLIGHTS ON THAT DAY WERE CANCELED, MORE THAN 40% WERE DELAYED ACCORDING TO FLIGHT AWARE, OTHER AIRLINES HAVE RECOVERED BUT THE TROUBLE WENT BEYOND THE AIRLINES, EXTENDED TO BANKS, HEALTHCARE SYSTEMS AND RETAILERS, ALL AROUND THE WORLD. SAM, THANKS FOR BEING WITH US. WHAT WENT WRONG HERE? >> HONESTLY, IT WAS SUCH A BIG OUTAGE FOR SUCH A SIMPLE ISSUE. CROWDSTRIKE, THEY WERE PUSHING OUT A PRETTY SIMPLE WINDOWS UPDATE, MOSTLY AIMED AT TRYING TO STOP MALICIOUS ACTORS, AND IT JUST WENT WRONG. IT SEEMS LIKE WHILE TRYING TO IMPLEMENT THE FIX THERE MIGHT HAVE BEEN A CODING ERROR OR A PATCH ISSUE BUT WHATEVER HAPPENED WHEN THEY PUSHED IT OUT FRIDAY IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT, IT CAUSED THE DREADED BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH AND IT'S ONE OF THOSE PRODUCTS THAT IS JUST EMBEDDED IN PEOPLE'S NETWORKS AND IT WILL TAKE DAYS FOR MANY COMPANIES INCLUDING DELTA, OBVIOUSLY, TO COMPLETE OR REMEDIATE. >> FOR VIEWERS OUT THERE WHO HAVE NOT HAVE THE JOY OF EXPERIENCING THE BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH, I HAVE THIS, AND IT CYCLES THROUGH REBOOTING, AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN. AND SO YOU'RE IN A DOOM LOOP. CROWDSTRIKE, WHICH YOU MENTIONED, CROWDSTRIKE, TRIES TO PROTECT COMPUTERS FROM MALICIOUS ACTORS. AND SO, IT WAS TRYING TO DO ITS JOB BUT IN THIS INSTANCE, IT WAS JUST A MISHAP, RIGHT? SORRY, GO AHEAD. >> NOW, IT APPEARS THAT WAY. YOU HAVE IT RIGHT AND CROWDSTRIKE IS REPUTABLE, THEY MADE THEIR NAME FROM DETECTING RUSSIAN HACKERS, TARGETING GOVERNMENTS, THEY ARE REPUTABLE IN THIS SPACE. IT SEEMED SO FAR FROM WHAT WE KNOW AND WHAT THE CEO HAS SAID THAT THIS WAS JUST A SOFTWARE CONFIGURATION ERROR. IT SEEMS LIKE SO FAR, IT IS JUST AN INTERNAL MISHAP. >> IT ANY HACKERS TAKE ADVANTAGE ONCE THIS HAPPENED? >> UNFORTUNATELY, THAT HAS BEEN A BIG PART OF THE FALLOUT. WE'VE SEEN FISHING ALERTS THAT STARTED AS QUICKLY AS FRIDAY AFTERNOON GOING OUT THAT WERE TARGETING CUSTOMERS SAYING DON'T WORRY, WE HAVE A FIX. THERE WAS NOT A FIX AT THAT POINT OTHER THAN MAYBE REBOOTING, 15 DIFFERENT TIMES AND USING TOOLS FROM MICROSOFT AND CROWDSTRIKE HAS SEEN SCAMMERS ALSO SHARING THE SAME ALERT, AND HACKERS THAT ARE TARGETING CUSTOMERS WITH MALWARE, PROMISING THEY ALSO HAVE A FIX BUT UNLESS IT'S COMING FROM MICROSOFT, UNLESS YOU HAVE TALKED TO CROWDSTRIKE, IT'S PROBABLY MALICIOUS SPAM AT THIS POINT. >> IS IT POSSIBLE TO CALCULATE THE TOTAL COST OF THIS OUTAGE, AT THIS POINT? >> AS OF RIGHT NOW, WE DON'T HAVE A DEFINITIVE NUMBER. WHAT WE DO KNOW IS THE TOTAL NUMBER OF FLIGHTS, EVEN FRIDAY, IT WAS AS HIGH AS 5100 FLIGHTS THAT WERE GROUNDED AND CANCELED. AND FRIDAY, AND INSURERS ARE EXPECTING CLAIMS TO COME IN THAT ARE MAYBE IN THE BILLIONS OF DOLLARS RANGE, AND WE ARE SEEING WHEN AND HOW LONG THE RECOVERY TAKES. CROWDSTRIKE SAID IT'LL PROBABLY TAKE A FEW DAYS AT MICROSOFT SAID AS MANY AS 8.5 MILLION DEVICES HAVE BEEN HIT BY THIS OUTAGE AND SO, IT IS NOT SOMETHING THAT IS GOING TO GO AWAY AFTER ONE
