Roger Federer shares retrospective on his career in new book

♪ >>> WE ARE BACK WITH THE ONE AND ONLY ROGER FEDERER. DURING HIS STORIED TENNIS CAREER, HE WON MORE THAN 100 TOURNAMENTS, INCLUDING 20 GRAD SLAMS. NOT ONLY IS HE REGARDED AS ONE OF THE GREATEST PLAYERS OF ALL TIME, I WOULD SAY THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME, HE'S ALSO A TRUE SPORTSMAN ON AND OFF THE COURT. NOW ROGER IS PULLING BACK THE CURTAIN ON HIS LIFE IN A NEW BOOK HE PUT TOGETHER WITH HIS PUBLISHER. A STUNNING VISUAL BIOGRAPHY CALLED "FEDERER" OR AS WE LIKE TO SAY, ROG. GOOD MORNING! >> NICE TO SEE YOU, SAVANNAH. >> THIS IS AN INCREDIBLE BOOK. IT IS AN HEIRLOOM COFFEE TABLE BOOK. WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO DO THIS? >> WELL, THERE HAS BEEN SO MANY PICTURES TAKEN OF MY CAREER, MAYBE NOT SO MUCH WHEN I WAS YOUNGER BECAUSE WE DIDN'T HAVE PHONES BACK THEN THAT WERE TAKING PICTURES AND VIDEOS OF OUR KIDS ALL THE TIME. BUT I JUST THOUGHT IT WOULD BE NICE TO HAVE A RETROSPECTIVE OF MY CAREER, MY LIFE NOW THAT IT'S ALL SAID AND DONE. I STARTED TO WORK ON THE PROJECT TOGETHER TWO YEARS AGO. AND IT WAS MUCH MORE WORK THAN I THOUGHT IT WAS GOING TO BE BECAUSE THERE IS SO MANY PICTURES, AND I WANTED TO CHOOSE THE BEST ONES TOGETHER WITH MY WIFE. I FEEL LIKE WE CAME TO A VERY NICE PLACE. >> THERE ARE SOME PERSONAL ONES IN THERE, TOO. IT IS KIND OF LIKE YOUR SCRAPBOOK. WAS THE PROCESS HELPFUL IN TURNING THE PAGE AS YOU ARE KIND OF TRANSITIONING INTO THIS NEW LIFE? >> VERY MUCH SO. I FELT LIKE IT WAS LIKE THERAPY AS WELL A LITTLE BIT. AND I WASN'T READY TO TELL THE WHOLE STORY AS IN WORDS, LIKE A -- YOUR AUTOBIOGRAPHY, YOU KNOW? BUT IN PICTURES, IT FELT REALLY GOOD. AND THERE'S BEEN ALL THESE EPISODES FOR ME, YOU KNOW, TRYING TO MAKE THE TOUR AND THEN MAKE BEING ON THE TOUR FOR THE FIRST TIME AND THEN EVERYTHING THAT GOES WITH IT. YOU KNOW, IT'S MASSIVE. THERE IS SO MANY THINGS THAT GO INTO A PLAYER OR AN ATHLETE. >> ARE THERE ANY CHEERS ON THESE PAGES? >> NOT VERBAL. WHEN I LOOK THROUGH THE BOOK, THERE IS ALWAYS A STORY TO TELL ABOUT EACH AND EVERY PICTURE. I THINK IT IS A REALLY NICE WAY WE PUT IT TOGETHER. I'M REALLY, REALLY HAPPY ABOUT IT. >> YOU KNOW THERE IS A TENNIS TOURNAMENT GOING ON RIGHT NOW? >> ABSOLUTELY. >> YOU WON IT FIVE TIMES IN A ROW. DO YOU REMEMBER THAT? >> IT'S BEEN A WHILE, BUT I DO REMEMBER SOME, YES. >> DO YOU HAVE ANY PLANS TO GO OUT TO FLUSHING MEADOWS? >> YES. ALSO I WENT TO WIMBLEDON THIS YEAR. I WILL GO TO THE OPEN ACTUALLY TONIGHT. >> OH GOOD! >> I HAVEN'T BEEN BACK AT THE OPEN SINCE I WAS RETIRED. I'M SURE IT WILL BE NICE TO BE IN ASHE WATCHING TENNIS FROM THE SIDELINES THIS TIME. IT'S THE FIRST TIME I'M DOING IT. >> YOU ALWAYS SEE THESE HATS. A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE NOT AWARE YOU ARE RETIRED. THEY ARE STILL WEARING YOUR HAT OUT THERE. >> THAT'S GOOD. THEY'RE STILL REPRESENTING, OKAY. >> WHAT ABOUT YOUR FRIEND RAFA NADAL. WE KNOW ABOUT YOUR DEEP FRIENDSHIP. HE'S BEEN INJURED. HE'S NOT AT THE U.S. OPEN. HAVE YOU TALKED TO HIM? WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT WHERE HE'S AT RIGHT NOW? >> I ACTUALLY JUST SPOKE TO HIM THIS LAST WEEK. HE WANTED TO ASK ME SOMETHING, AND WE HAD A CHAT, AND I FELT A LITTLE BIT SORRY FOR HIM THAT HIS SUMMER DIDN'T GO AS WELL AS PLANNED BECAUSE -- OLYMPICS, HE HAD A TOUGH DRAW. HE WAS HOPING TO GET THE DOUBLE. BUT, YOU KNOW, OVERALL HE CAN DO WHATEVER HE WANTS. HE'S BEEN, YOU KNOW, ONE OF THE MOST ICONIC TENNIS PLAYERS WE'VE EVER HAD IN OUR SPORT. THAT'S ALSO WHAT I TOLD HIM. SO I JUST HOPE HE CAN GO OUT ON HIS TERMS AND THE WAY HE WANTS TO. BUT HE IS A GREAT GUY AND A GREAT CAREER. AND I'M HAPPY WE HAD SO MANY MOMENTS. >> IT'S ICONIC. LET'S JUST ROLL THE VIDEOTAPE. I CANNOT WATCH THIS AND NOT CRY. THIS IS AT YOUR RETIREMENT. >> TERRIBLE. >> I CANNOT DO IT. >> I'M LAUGHING NOW, BUT THEN IT WAS EMOTIONAL. >> OH, I KNOW. WELL, THE LABOR CUP IS COMING UP. WELL, MAYBE THAT'S WHERE ALL TENNIS GREATS COULD COME AND PLAY THEIR LAST MATCH. >> SAY BUT, AGAIN, HE CAN DO GOOD-BYE,E HE WANTS. OPINION THAT WAS AN. IT WOULD BE GREAT IF RAFA COULD PLAY AT THE LABOR CUP. HE SAID HE IS GOING TO PLAY THAT. BUT, AGAIN, HE CAN DO WHATEVER HE WANTS. THAT WAS AN INCREDIBLE MOMENT IN MY CAREER. THERE IS ALSO GOING TO BE PICTURES OF ME AND RAFA TOGETHER LIKE THAT. >> OH, GOOD. I HOPE HE GETS A WHOLE CHAPTER. JANNICK SINNER, HE TESTED POSITIVE FOR BANNED SUBSTANCES, ULTIMATELY CLEARED. HE'S PLAYING AT THE U.S. OPEN. PLAYERS FEEL DIFFERENT WAYS ABOUT IT. WHAT ARE YOU THOUGHTS? >> I UNDERSTAND IT IS A TRICKY SITUATION AND THE NIGHTMARE OF EVERY ATHLETE AND TEAM TO HAVE THESE ALLEGATIONS AND THESE PROBLEMS BECAUSE WE FEEL OUT THESE FORMS EVERY DAY. IT'S REALLY DIFFICULT. IT IS NOT SOMETHING WE WANT TO SEE IN OUR SPORT, THESE TYPES OF NEWS, REGARDLESS OF IF HE DID SOMETHING OR NOT. OR ANY PLAYER DID. IT IS JUST NOISE THAT WE DON'T WANT, YOU KNOW? SO I UNDERSTAND THE FRUSTRATION OF HAD HE BEEN TREATED THE SAME WAY AS OTHERS? AS OTHERS? I THINK WHAT IT COMES DOWN TO. I THINK WE ALL PRETTY MUCH TRUST HE DIDN'T DO ANYTHING, BUT THE INCONSISTENCY POTENTIALLY THAT HE HAD TO SIT OUT WHILE THEY WEREN'T 100% SURE WHAT WAS GOING ON, I THINK THAT'S THE QUESTION HERE THAT NEEDS TO BE ANSWERED. BUT IT IS WHAT IT IS, AND WE NEED TO TRUST THE PROCESS OF EVERYONE INVOLVED HERE. >> YEAH. AS FOR YOU, YOU LOOK TAN. YOU HAVE BEEN PLAYING GOLF. I HEAR YOU HAVE BEEN PLAYING PICKLEBALL. >> NOT SO MUCH. MORE GOLF. >> CAN WE SEE YOU IN THE TENNIS COURT AGAIN? OBVIOUSLY NOT ON THE TOUR BUT DOING EXHIBITIONS OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT? >> I WOULD LOVE THAT. I HAVE BEEN ON THE TENNIS COURTS WITH MY WIFE AND SOME FRIENDS OF MINE WHILE WE WERE HERE HOLIDAYING AND VACATIONING IN THE HAMPTONS. I LOVE GOING OUT THERE AND PLAYING TENNIS. IT'S GREAT. I SHOULD DO IT RIGHT AWAY. I GET STAGE FRIGHT, NOWADAYS. TO BE HONEST, I HAVEN'T BEEN IN FRONT OF THE FANS ON THE COURT. >> WE TALK ABOUT THE LABOR CUP, WHICH IS THE TOURNAMENT YOU HELPED TO START. IT IS IN BERLIN THIS YEAR. NEXT YEAR IT IS IN SAN FRANCISCO. YOU WENT OUT TO PROMOTE IT AND I UNDERSTAND YOU SHOT SOME BASKETS WITH STEPH CURRY. >> NOW HE'S GOT THE OLYMPIC GOLD. THAT WAS AN INCREDIBLE MOMENT. I MADE MY SHOT. >> NOT THE MOST DIFFICULT OF SHOTS. >> I WANTED TO ASK HIM IF ROGER HAS GAME. STEF, DOES ROG HAVE GAME? >> CONGRATS, MAN. THAT WAS UNREAL. >> THANK YOU SO MUCH. >> YOU LOOK JUST LIKE THE REFS I SAW IN THE VIDEOS. >> HOW YOU BEEN? >> BEEN GREAT. BEEN GREAT. IT'S GREAT TO SEE YOU. >> THANKS FOR COMING IN. >> TWO ICONS TOGETHER. THANK YOU SO MUCH, YEAH. WE LOVE YOU ALL. THANK YOU SO MUCH,
