'HNN Overtime' talks UH football and the recent changes to the Pac-12

feeling a little bit under the weather so we wish her all the best hope she gets feeling better but we're back we're back at it it's been a little bit a littleit I was looking at our timeline and I think the last one was in July it was a busy summer it's been a very busy summer we've all been uh very busy with multiple activities I I was in Chicago for a bit you went to the DNC I did go to the DNC you went you know you were doing you helped edit the Maui wildfires one year anniversary special August was a busy month yeah um we also did as a group record an episode like last week or two weeks ago but we just so busy it just kind of got lost in the archives so but we promise we we are back we here maybe one day we'll release it like on the 100th episode The Lost episode um but yes we are back and we have a lot to talk about because it is football season the fall is here and um we got to talk about uh football they started the year with a week zero win over Delaware State and then prime time um kgmb Prime Time National Television they take on UCLA in the bright hot sun man oh man Kyle you were out there how much were you sweating me and Sienna were both out there I don't I couldn't tell you what was really going on from halime to the end of the game I was so zoned out I was just shooting and I was like if it's in Focus it's in Focus because I was it was so hot because one thing you have to remember it's like Aloha Stadium it was big enough and it had um kind of some Roofing at got a little bit shade you have some shade especially on the home side but at the Ching there is no cover whatsoever I was hoping and praying for clouds but I mean all in all it was a pretty exciting game there was a lull kind of in that middle of the game it really was I mean you saw uh come out hot in the start I mean bra shager seemed to be on fire he was completing every single pass it seemed like in the beginning uh in the end 1613 UCLA some fun facts uh just want to kick off from uh uh that was the first time since 1939 that uh in UCLA played in Honolulu MH so uh that was that was pretty cool prime time once again it's been a really long time since that that happened um so I mean it was it was sold out right it was a sold out crowd um uh water got sold out it was it was a really hot day for everybody but um yeah you know 16 13 it was a really close game it was um exciting but I think really what kind of hindered this offense early on was you know shagger got banged up he hurt his ankle um in that second quarter and the offense really kind of for all intents and purposes shut down after that and you know this was their opening drive um touchdown uh shager to Pell ashlock and from there they really only they relied on their kicker con masuzawa to to get points on on the board but also the defense I mean they were playing lights out in that first for majority of the game against um UCLA they have that pick right there from Logan Taylor um I mean potentially a safety if Ethan garbers doesn't toss that right into his hands yeah I know seriously I mean great defensive effort um but they just kind of didn't get that offense going to match the defensive effort that that you know it's a good thing when your defense is taking on a team like UCLA and they're holding them to just feel goals for majority of the game yeah and I I think it really came down to Bren sher's injury cuz I mean when you think of Braden you think of that dual threat quarterback type of thing I mean we saw it in Delaware State he was able to run the ball he was able to pass the ball and that throws a defense off you don't know what they're going to do when you see him get injured you know they're just going to be passing the ball which is kind of what we saw I mean that kind of hindered uh's offense a lot I mean you look at the stats Braden sh actually both quarterbacks in this game very very similar uh you look at BR Sher 25 for 42 227 yards one touchdown two interceptions you look at UCLA's Ethan garbers 19 for 38 attempts 272 one touchdown and two interceptions as well thing with him also a dual threat quarterback he have the leading amount of rushing yards for UCLA with 49 yards uh Pell ashlock like we said wide receiver honestly the best receiver on uh this team in my opinion nine receptions 112 yards and one touchdown fun fact week two ashlock is now ranked 31st in the country for receiving yards uh Braden shager is also ranked 62 in the country for passing yards with 430 so little bit of stats right there overall I mean you see the you see this team in my opinion like they they have the potential to there's a lot of to be great and that you you mentioned it before that defense especially the defensive line they were on fire I mean that game they were putting the pressure on UCLA so I mean there's I mean you we always talk about a defense winch championships and I I think they have a big chance you know I I think um bringing in um defensive coordinator Dennis Thurman to this unit and really lighting a fire under their behinds um you excuse my franch under you know you know the whole saying goes but like yeah they're playing inspired they're playing aggressive and and they're wreaking havoc pretty much every week so far and and also too you got to shout out the Special Teams unit you know you have not not you know week uh week zero tyon hin runs back a punt return um this week uh this past game against UCLA fake punt Lucas Barrow runs it for the first down um also Lucas Barrow hitting a team on the one yd line off a punt it the the Special Teams unit and the defensive unit is greatly improved from a year ago and I think it's just going to take some time for that offense to kind of match that and once that all three phases get going man it's going to be fun it's going to be fun it is going to be fun and what is going to be fun as well is tomorrow's matchup with Sam Houston now if you haven't heard of that team uh before this is actually the first time that you is meeting with Sam Houston let me show this b-roll really fast uh Sam Houston they're rocking the all orange this is their home opener uh for them so they're rocking out these colors so it's going to be kind of interesting uh to see this match up uh versus Sam Houston Sam Houston is also one and one another fact from uh Athletics got to give another prop to them uh is one for 11 on the road under Timmy since he started so he was 0 and6 on the road in 2022 and 1 and5 in 2023 some other facts too uh as well courtesy of uh Athletics uh Braden shager needs 65 passing yards to reach 7,000 in his career only four other U quarterbacks have ever done that he needs one more passing touchdown to tie chevin Cordo for sixth all time and three more to tie Garrett Gabriel wow fourth all time once again uh courtesy uh Athletics for all shout out for that stat line and and I'm sure he's going to want to perform because um I did a story yesterday and come to find out they're going to be playing Sam Houston in Huntsville Texas Huntsville Texas is a little over two and a half hours away from Highland Park that is where Braden shager grew up that's where he went to high school so he's going to have a lot of family in the stands um you know he was telling us over the week you know this is the first game that his parents can like drive to his family can drive to first time he's playing college ball in the state of Texas so he's excited um and I'm sure he'll I mean there's a lot of Texas guys Pell um uh I think cam Stone as well like a bunch of Texas guys on this team um so it it's it's a cool cool little moment for them to be playing college football in Texas um they got in I believe late uh late last night or early this morning um to Texas and now they're they're uh over there getting ready ready for that game that is going to be at 1 p.m haa time on ESPN plus so if you have the es if you have an ESPN Plus account you will be able to get that game um on the app so if not Kyle chanen will have all the highlights tomorrow as well so make sure to stay tuned at 5 on K chel yeah is it all three just scroll through the channels yeah you'll find us you'll find us we ain't hard to find we're not hard to find uh very briefly Kyle you know I have to do it I do every single week I got to crank out the stats oh yeah you know you know I do my research play the b-roll so guys uh Kyle uh biggest concern going into this week is their quarterback Hunter Watson he is ranked 103 in the nation for passing yards once again just like UCLA he's another dual threat quarterback uh he last game was a niffy one they played the UCF kns UCF was a far by far superior team uh they won 45 to4 against Sam Houston and uh once they kind of took the lead they benched uh the starting quarterback so we're going to we're going to actually go back to the game before then to really look at the statline for Hunter Watson he was 16 of 27 they played rice as well 16 out of 27 229 yards two touchdowns he had 14 carries for 57 yards so once again a big dual threat quarterback seems like he does a lot of their rushing he's the leading rusher for that team as well uh as well as passing so you have that dual thre quarterback that uh is going to have to play against if we look at UCLA I mean it definitely seems like that defense is able to at least somewhat slow down or stop that that uh that quarterback attack so we'll have to wait and see and it's all about interesting we I mean they had that bye right they the by we everybody got a little bit healthier I think yeah the biggest concern is if BR shager is going to be going to be all good to go um I believe he said he's good to go but yeah I mean it's just one week and you never really know with injuries but it sounds like a lot of the guys that were banged up um against UCLA have been practicing this week and they're ready to go against Sam Houston this will be interesting I'm I'm I'm I'm very intrigued to see how this game shapes up um dealing with the Texas heat just all that all the different factors traveling on the road well we'll see all right talking about interesting and something we're intrigued to see um a lot of big news in the world of college football as it pertains to the Mount West and the Pack 12 from yesterday it was announced that four Mountain West schools are heading to the Pack 12 in 2026 the Pack 12 is not dead the pack stuck around it's not down to like two teams like we were at before exactly so going into this season the Pack 12 was gutted to just two teams Washington State and Oregon State but within overnight the conference announced that four schools from the Mountain West will be joining in the 2026 season that those teams are Boise State Colorado State Fresno State and San Diego State so that gets them to um six teams in the reimagined Pack 12 you need at least eight to be considered a conference in the NCAA so more moves are expected but what it does it it leaves the Mountain West a little bit gutted as well so the only remaining schools are Air Force unov Nevada New Mexico Wyoming San Jose State and Hawaii Hawaii is an football only member of the Mountain West so they only play football in the Mountain West all the other sports are in the Big West this leaves Hawaii kind of in a pickle when it comes to what's next because you never know if the Mountain West decides okay we need to get couple more teams to be a full conference we'll just expand keep these guys here but if a UNLV or a Wyoming say we're going to Conference USA or we're going to the American that then Hawai might just be kind of left in the dust and you just never know you just never know and that's the that's the biggest thing is like will Hawaii also go to the Pack 12 I mean I I don't know like no one no one knows uh I mean for the longest time we really did think the Pack 12 was dead I mean that whole entire situation with teams leaving the Pack 12 and then bringing it down to just two and just to remind everyone like you can't just leave a conference right so like these teams leaving the Mountain West are going to owe millions of dollars for leaving the conference so this is like this is really big news right now and it does leave that big on what is going to happen to uh what's going toen to the Mountain West is the Pack 12 going to get bigger what the heck is happening Kyle the thing is it's so if you remember going into this season the Pack 12 um signed an agreement with the Mountain West a scheduling agreement because you know you only have two teams in your conference they needed teams to play in their conference schedule so they made an agreement with the mount West to play their conference games against Mountain West opponents that was supposed to last for 2 years they the September 1st this past September 1st they were supposed to renegotiate and reup that didn't happen I thought for the longest time that they would just merge like just have Washington State and Oregon State join the mount West you want to Rebrand it as the Pack 12 to get that you know that recognition and that that clout go right ahead but it I don't understand why you're just picking and choosing just merge the whole the the two yeah you know and I I I I don't get it either it it just like it's the craziest thing these conferences uh I mean these days you have matchups you have rivalries that in conference I mean that everyone everyone knew about and now it's like you play these teams out of conference and it's just throwing everything off it's weird it it's really weird uh I mean we'll have to wait and see once again that's 2026 uh that this whole entire move would be the Pack 12 still needs two more teams to be that official yep conference uh so who are those two teams going to be we don't know is it going to be uh probably not probably not don't know probably be in the Mountain West what's going to happen in the Mountain West we don't we don't know there's so many questions we wish we had answers yeah so we'll have to wait and see we'll have to
