Intro Jennifer Grey and Clark Gregg were  married for 19 years when they announced   their separation in July 2020. Their  fans were heartbroken. Jennifer and   Clark were admired for their strong bond and  supportive relationship in the public eye.   What caused a couple who seemed so happy  to split after almost two decades?   Relationship history Before Jennifer Grey met Clark Gregg,  she experienced other relationships that   significantly impacted the woman she is today. One of the star’s earliest high-profile   relationships was with her ‘Ferris Bueller’  co-star, Matthew Broderick, in the late 1980s.   The former pair’s relationship only  became public when they were involved   in a deadly car crash while vacationing in  Ireland. Sadly, two people passed away.   It was tragic. Jennifer suffered terribly  from survivor’s guilt and took a break from   acting following the accident. “There’s not a  week that goes by that I don’t think about it.   That I don’t think about the families. That  I don’t think about Matthew. It’s just in   me. It’s part of my topographical map, the  landscape of my life,” she said in 2022.   The two split up shortly after the  accident because the trauma tied to   their young romance was unbearable. Grey was also briefly linked to Johnny   Depp in 1989. They were even engaged!  The star told Drew Barrymore that in   the span of one month she had gotten engaged to  Matthew, broke up, then was engaged to Johnny!   Jennifer recently opened up about her  relationship with Depp, which took place   shortly after her car crash. She explained that  the energy between them was like a bonfire!   “It was like, ‘Oh, I’m being totally,  totally compensated for the s**t I   just went through,” the actress joked. Jennifer was also briefly linked to ‘Back to   the Future’ star Michael J. Fox and reportedly  dated the journalist, George Stephanopoulos.   In the summer of 2000, the ‘Dirty Dancing’ star  began dating Clark Gregg. You may recognize him   from the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Agent Phil  Coulson. A year after meeting, the pair married   on Martha's Vineyard. Just five months later, they  welcomed their now 21-year-old daughter, Stella.   The now former couple were initially very discreet  about their romance. In the late 90s and early   2000s celebrity gossip didn’t travel as fast as  it does now. The ‘Ferris Bueller’ actress was   also pretty good at hiding relationships. However, after Greg’s fame in the Marvel   universe he would do interviews where he sometimes  mentioned his family. When fans of ‘Dirty Dancing’   Family life and Marvel discovered that these two were married,  some were puzzled, while others shipped hard.   In 2006, the now-former lovebirds worked together  on the comedy-drama, ‘The Road To Christmas.’ They   were adorable on-screen — and off-screen too! As the years progressed in the marriage, Jennifer   would begin to share sweet snaps on Instagram  of her and Clark. A few of them featured the   two sharing a dance. How romantic! It seemed that  in all aspects, the two worked well together.   The director would sometimes quip about  the influence of his wife’s iconic role   in their everyday life. Referencing Baby’s  legendary leap into Patrick Swayze’s hands,   Gregg joked that he and his then-wife  did it every morning. “I brew some tea,   I hold the cup, she runs, and then  I feed it up to her,” he joked.   The 61-year-old added that only one  man could do that lift, and sadly,   Swayze is no longer with us. “I will never try it.  That was one of our wedding vows,” Gregg added.   On another occasion, he shared that their typical  date night in New York involved theater and sushi.   “Maybe a salsa class if she wins or binge-watching  if I win,” the ‘Trust Me’ star shared.   A special part of their relationship  was raising their beautiful daughter.   Some call Stella her mom’s mini-me because she  shares her mother’s striking looks. One time   Ellen Degeneres asked Clark if he was nervous  about his daughter discovering boys. “It does,   Ellen, yes. Very much so, yes,” he replied. At the time of the interview, the ‘Iron Man’   actor also told Ellen a funny anecdote about  his daughter’s experience with boys thus far.   While she was in middle school, Stella went to a  party with some of her friends — boys included.   “And she came back, and she said, ‘I think I’m  getting thirsty for boys.’ So that’s a thirst   we’re not going to let her quench for a while,”  he joked. We wonder how Clark reacted when his   daughter brought her first boyfriend home! The former pair also appeared on a 2020 episode   of the ABC sitcom, ‘The Conners.’ They acted  as a couple looking to add Jackie Conner as a   3rd member of their relationship. Fans  loved the appearance, which was why it   came as a shock when we found out a few weeks  later that they were getting divorced. We also   found out the two were already separated  — low-key proving they are great actors!   Adding to the confusion was that a month before  the announcement of their divorce, Grey posted a   Divorce announcement heartfelt tribute to her then-husband for Father’s  Day. “I love you and am beyond grateful you showed   up just in the nick o’ time to make my dream come  true. For continuing to show up as a devoted,   loving dad and partner to raise this  amazing human with,” the actress wrote.   After nearly two decades together, Jennifer  and Clark took to Instagram to share the sad   news. The former couple had separated in  January 2020, knowing that, even apart,   they would always be a family who loves,  values, and cares for each other.   “We recently made the difficult decision to  divorce, but we remain close and are deeply   grateful for the life we’ve shared  and the wonderful daughter we’ve   raised. – jennifer & clark. p.s. totally  crying as we post this,” the two shared.   Fans were devastated by this news. Some  responded to the posts urging the former   couple to work things out, while others wished the  actors the best of luck in their new journeys.   "Please don’t divorce. Rethink again. Life is  all about forgiveness and stepping over every   stumbling block and moving forward,” one Instagram  user wrote. Another one said, "I’m sorry for the   strife. My thoughts are with you both." Following the divorce announcement,   Why did they split fans also wondered why their faves were  splitting. Was there some bad blood? Did   something terrible happen? However, as the news  settled, we learned that, unlike many other   celebrity splits, this one wasn’t ugly. Neither party had done anything wrong,   and no one was accused of cheating; no one was to  blame. Though, they never said exactly why they   went their separate ways. Perhaps the former pair  had just grown apart — 19 years is a long time!   We also suspect they wanted to separate  sooner but were hanging on for their daughter,   whom they love dearly. Just a month before  announcing the divorce, the former couple   celebrated Stella’s high school graduation. She would soon be off into the world, paving   her path and building her life, so the actors  would no longer need to stay together for their   child’s sake. That’s just a speculation based on  how doting they are over their daughter, though.   By February 2021, Jennifer and Clark’s divorce was  finalized. Their settlement agreed that the Marvel   actor would pay his ex-wife spousal support.  Although, this agreement has a few conditions.   A clause says that spousal support  will cease if Grey gets remarried,   indicating that Gregg is still trying to care for  his former wife. Financial support can also end if   both parties agree to it, which tells us that the  two were able to come to an agreement easily.   The actors’ divorce was not as messy as  other celebrity splits that we know of.   After the split It's obvious that their feelings of concern  and respect for each other are still present!   In the years that followed Jennifer and Clark’s  split, we saw even more that the two had a very   amicable separation. In 2022, the ‘Dirty  Dancing’ star released a memoir titled, ‘Out   of the Corner.’ The book dives into the star’s  unbridled, romantic adventures in Hollywood from   a place of honesty and self-deprecating humor. When Grey announced that she’d be releasing the   book, her ex-husband humorously tweeted to show  his support and encourage fans to check it out.   “4 words you never want to hear from your  ex: “I’m writing a memoir.” So believe me   when I say this book is great. It is,like  J, wise, fearless & funny af & doesn’t   pull punches. Or trash me. Much,” he wrote. As of now, Clark’s streak in the Marvel Universe   came to an end. He’s been keeping busy since  his exit from ‘S.H.I.E.L.D,’ appearing in the   biographical film, ‘Being the Ricardos’ and the  4th season of ‘Snowpiercer.’ We can also see him   in the 2023 Netflix original series ‘Florida Man,’  alongside Lauren Buglioli and Edgar Ramirez.   Jennifer has also been busy. There have been talks  of a reboot of ‘Dirty Dancing,’ but the details of   the project are being kept under wraps. We know  that the star will executive produce the sequel,   and she praised the “very genuine and  simple” premise of the original movie.   Grey told People Magazine that they wouldn’t  try to replicate her love affair with Patrick   Swayze’s character. "All I can say is there is no  replacing anyone who's passed — you never try to   repeat anything that's magic like that," she said,  adding, "You just go for something different."   Even though Jennifer Grey and Clark Gregg split  up after 19 years, they still care deeply for each   other. After the trauma of Jennifer’s early years,  it seems that Clark became her safe space and   building a family together brought them peace and  joy.
