we're doing football previews we'll start by talking big picture story lines what we're watching for what we're looking at segment two we're going to get into what we call W2 W4 the what to watch for we've each got a couple things that we want to share with you that we're watching for in the last segment we will get into um typically like the key matchup we're watching in the game we will look at game predictions and anything else we just haven't been able to get to yet typically also we'll look at a shady stat of the game to be on the lookout for not because it's like sketchy but because of my last name so there you go that's what we're hitting today cers also after this game tonight we're g I'm gonna be hitting a live postcast I know it's going to be late but folks night owls I'm with you we're going to do this thing and we're going to break it down hopefully celebrating Carolina being one and oh yes let's go let's go so cers I said it in the open here it is the heels have not won a true Road game to start the football season since 1992 that's 32 years ago in that time they've lost at Virginia Tech in 21 at Cal in 18 at South Carolina in 13 at Georgia Tech in ' 05 and at Oklahoma in 2001 there was a win in California in 93 but that was over USC in Anaheim not on campus so the last time Carolina won true Road environment to start the season September 5th of 1992 a 3517 win over Wake Forest cers I know it's a very difficult thing to to go on the road and get these wins and I know truthfully they don't happen that often that's another part of this you know a lot of times you're at home or at a neutral site that said how does Carolina have to go on the road take the crowd out of it and overcome this whole three decades worth of not winning on the road to start the season oh man first off the not went on the road since 92 is insane I was four years old in 92 so I didn't know anything about sports at four years old all only person only athletic I think I knew at four years old was Deion Sanders he was playing with the falers at the time and that's all everybody in my household talked about was Dion Dion Dion so for that to be a three decade long win we need this win man but uh in order to get a win on the road especially as a power five opponent oh man you gotta be able to take the crowd out of it uh one of the main things to take the crowd out of it is being able to run the ball and control the clock so it's gonna come down to who can who can dominate up front who can control the line of scrimmage um Minnesota has brought back some some pretty big boys on that old line but we got some we got some big boys to go against them too on our D line and also we that massive Old Line we have as well should be able to push push their D line around as well but it's going to be a tough physical matchup I'm looking forward to it but whoever can whoever can maintain that momentum and and and control the game by by the big boys up front that's that's how they could that's how they could get it done because the crowd not in it there's no crowd no to affect the offense that mean our guys can hear the kanes on offense we don't have to go off silid count um that's gonna be that's gonna be major because I know it's a home game so the crowd's gonna be Rowdy it's open to day um uh they Minnesota come in ready especially everybody seen last week with Georgia Tech beating uh Florida State so it's different it's different uh college football is different now like everybody has a chance this year you know with with the transfer portal and you bringing in guys to plug in and major spots guys with experience you don't have to rely too much on true freshman coming out of high school that still needs to learn and adj you could go like I said you go to the portal and get somebody that season season that can come in and just play right away so it's going to be it's going to be a tough match up I mean I can't wait root for Carolina all day but they're going into a tough environment they got to be able to bring it it's going to be very interesting now we've got that three decade no winning streak but Ma Brown thankfully has a different kind of number Carolina in season opening games against a power conference opponent since coach Brown's first season in 88 Mac Brown is 8-2 in those games every other Carolina Coach is 0 and 11 so you know we do have that kind of number on our side and so for everyone who's like Max too old get him out just slow your roll let's let's let this guy have his time man we love ma Brown okay so cers you talked about all that nness and that plays a very specific role in this game let me lay out what I mean both teams are coming into this game with a new quarterback for Carolina we still don't frankly know whether it's going to be Max Johnson or Connor herrold getting the first snap and the majority of the snaps but we'll find out for Minnesota it's Max brosmer who comes in from New Hampshire had a very successful career there LED FCS in passing yards per game and total offense per game last year both teams have a new defensive coordinator this year obviously Jeff Collins for Carolina Cory heatherman for Minnesota both teams have just a seconde offensive coordinator chip Lindsay obviously for us Greg Harbaugh for Minnesota and neither team has the depth chart released because that's what Fleck doesn't do he doesn't release a depth chart so all the newness we already talked about plus this with both personnel and coaching and depth chart cers is is it a situation of whoever whichever of these teams can manage the newness of the season and the newness of personnel and coaches whoever manages that better wins is that part of the the way this game goes I believe so like you said with with us not knowing who exactly is going to be at quarterback I still get an as to Connor harrold because other than Conor who's been in the system two years the uh Max Johnson only been in it once uh Max broer from from Minnesota only been in it once and they both and both those quarterbacks enrolled during the Spring Conor has the edge because he's been in that same system for two years so whoever whoever can manage manage uh the game better and not turn the ball over because that we have been opening days it's both it's Jitters on both sides of the ball um they they may try to want to prove their Sal if if Max Johnson get in he may want to try to prove like yo I got experience in in sec I want to show off uh Max broser want to prove like yeah I was on the lower level last year but I could come up here and hang with the big boys on this level um they may try to force some throws um and so but at the end of the day whoever can control control the clock and and manage manage the game and not put the ball In Harm's Way and uh make plays when when the time comes I think that's who who has the better edge of course I'm gonna give the edge to Carolina of course because I want I want us to win for sure but it's to come down to who can handle who can handle the pressure first who can handle the pressure better how how do you do that dominate hey whoever offens line can dominate the line of scrimmage yeah who hey clean pocket like I said both offensive line are experienced both offensive lines are looking to prove their Sal so whoever can whoever can um manage that line of strage and could control the clock and um keep their QBs upright man that's going to be that's going to be the most important thing and then they both have productive running backs who they could turn around and hand the ball off to um was darus Taylor he's coming back he's a little banged up but he had a successful day against us last year you know he had like 138 yards in in a touchdown against us last year um Marian didn't run didn't have a product D against Minnesota last year he only had like 40 yards but of course we had Drake May who threw for 400 yards and but um that may not be the same this game you know what I'm saying so now we had to get both back we had to get aaran involved I know they're gonna try to get their guy involved because their guy was injured last year so he's gonna be looking to come back and prove himself and he knows he had a good productive game against this uh Carolina defense last year but then again it's a different defensive SC that's right but he but but again it still still gonna come down the big guys up front who who can control that line of scrimmage and who can make things happen cerse I want to get to our what to watch for I want to ask you one more question before we do though there's been a lot made about the fact that neither team has put out a depth chart obviously that's kind of uh precipitated by PJ Fleck not doing that really ever so Carolina I think wisely so is like okay we're not doing it either I think that's probably more something that we in the media and fans talk about and think about and care about perhaps even more because I'm here's my question to you how unsettling if at all is that for you as a player to be like oh gosh I don't know what their depth chart is um it's a little worrisome because you watched guys on film from last year so you don't but you still don't have a clue who's who's going to be ready to play and who's ready to go on game day now on the other hand you still have to prepare and be ready so it should come down to like no matter who's lined up against you or who you got to go against it's still about one-on-one matchups you gotta win one-on-one matchups but it's a little tougher because if you have Clips on a guy that you're supposed to play against it's easier to study when you know that's who the guy is yeah but um but in this instance with nobody releasing a dep depth chart you don't really have that sense of sense of who the Personnel is now you know who's coming back you know who's going to be there you know what I'm saying but now you don't know technically how they're going to be used um you don't know how how involved in the game they're going to be so it's it's a little different to prepare for um by being the first game of the season you don't have game film from games already so like after they play this game then the family's gonna be out there for everybody to look at but with the first first for this being the first game you don't have that advantage of studying the team yet okay so we need to get to our what to watch for the four things that we are watching for in this game that are key things that we think you the Watchers and listeners should be on the lookout for we're going to have that conversation in just a second right after I tell you about Five Hour Energy look just about every day after lunch I start on CFB to receive 20% off your order that offer is only valid until September 30th on one order and can't be used with other promotions and the code doesn't work on subscription orders so go to 5our energy.com today it's time for the very first www4 of the Season what to watch for basically the goal in this is four specific things that we want you to watch for in the game whether it's a player a position group something like that that's going to have an impact on the game we want to use this moment to help make make you a smarter college football viewer and where better to get ideas on that from than somebody that's literally been in the midst of it so cers as you look at this thing what are four things that you have that you think folks should be on the lookout for tonight uh well I mentioned one of them earlier who can control the line of scrimmage um that's one that's the main thing you got to win up front rather it's offensive line defensive line you got to be able to win win up front where run the ball and stopping run um another thing is the battle's outside receivers against the DBS you know what I'm saying like because if the guys if the if our DBS can hold up on the outside that allows our our guys up front to get get to the QB and then we get pressure on the QB turnovers happen sacks happen and we get off the field um another key thing some people don't think about is field position battles you know especially on the road you try not to be backed up in your own End Zone because the crowd can be effective on you like that U so kicking game will come in come in handy whether it's field positions on kickoffs or field position on flopping punts so you gotta gotta be able to to manage the field and and like I said feeli field position and field field battles so I mean that that also takes the crowd out of it because if if they don't have opportunity the crowd don't have opportunity to get to get loud to affect the QB then like then that that that works out in QB's favor it works out in offensive favor and also um we control the line the scrimage running game like going back to the running game uh both teams have very productive running backs yes uh we have a All-American and Marian hton um they have a good running back also and there's Taylor who's looking to bounce back and prove itself um so whoever running back can be more effective that that's G to be big and like I mentioned earlier Maran only had like 40 yards against Minnesota so I bet he's last year so I bet he's chopping at the bit for Redemption against them uh darus Taylor has already proven he could run on the defense so he's looking he's looking to cap capitalize on what he did last year to improving that that area as well so when it come comes down to who can run the ball and who can stop the run let me ask you about both of these guys a little bit cers because I'm wondering you know with Taylor the you mentioned his injury earlier he's got some sort of hamstring something going on and part of the the wondering I think for some people is when you got to be able to make Quick Cuts when you got to be able to stop and move and change and go how hard is it with a hamstring injury when you're dealing with that and I know there's degrees of hamstring injury but just kind of try to take us inside the psyche of somebody who's dealing with that um as a as a former player who had problems with hamstrings before uh oh yeah it's tough when you have to when you looking for that extra gear that extra burst um and it grabs on you a little bit it'll slow you down a little bit you're not you're not as effective one you may be worried about if I make this move or if I try to outrun this defender or make or you know get the extra yard you can risk uh injuring yourself further so it it plays a key role you're not not technically the same so it plays a key it plays a key in your decision making you know so and it also by him being the best back it may hinders the offense a little bit you can't use him as much in the passing game because if he has to run for long periods of time um it could it could come back to bite him he could he can injure himself even more um I know me personally being a defensive back and having hamstrings oh yeah when you have to run with when you have to run with receivers up and down the field man oh oh it's tough oh my God it's it's it's it's a cry for help sometimes for sure honestly like hey I need help over the top come on absolutely absolutely man especially if you got a speed receiver you know you got to run with him all day yes track track meet receiver man that was are the worse hey somebody tyreeks over here I need come on help me uh so you talked about this earlier like last year Taylor was only able to play six games in his freshman season and now look was very productive had 190 more 190 or more rushing yards in three of those six games now to be fair uh th those six games were against Eastern Michigan Northwestern and Bowling Green so not exactly the stoutest defenses you could ever imagine but still racking up 190 rushing yards or more uh is a big time thing so Carolina has got to be ready for this as you said was productive against us last year I want to flip it over to our side of it because I also wanted to ask you about omaran um I know we're all expecting him to be the Bell cow this year to have to take on a heavy load for the Tar Heels with you know just not knowing what we're going to get out of the air what because it's like yeah you want to win this game but man there's a whole season ahead and Conference games ahead and all that what in your mind is a healthy balanced load of number of carries you'd like to see out of amarion tonight um not sure put the ballpark of like 20 25 touches rather it could be a combination of running running and catching out of the back field because he have shown to have productive hands in the passing game as well so um but like you said he's a vital part of the offense he's that he's that bail cow back but he also had the speed to out run Defenders when he get out in the open so you don't want to burn them out but you got to be able to utilize them and controling that line of scrimmage with him and those big boys up front so uh D like I said Domina line of scrimage and being able to control that clock and like I said more you can run the ball you can take the crowd out of the game and then if he's having a if he's having a day hey man keep feeding long as long as he's if he's grinding out five six yards of Popp then he end up busting one a few few times here and there then it works in favor of UNCC for sure so but you like you said this is It's a Long season It's a Grind you don't want to wear him out but if he's having that type of production where you can keep feeding him and he he's type of guy to get stronger as the game goes on so like guys may guys be willing to hit him in the first and second quarter but when they get down to the third and fourth he's still getting stronger as he's getting stronger as he continues to play Then by the fourth quarter those guys typically make business decisions then you get tired of tackling uh running back of that of that uh build that statue uh once to four quarter hit and the good news is behind him we've got Darwin Barlo the transfer who's essentially a very similar type of Runner and freshman bullet Gaal who we think is gonna do some great things for Carolina so uh that back backfield has got some other dudes in it as well uh one of the thing I wanted to ask you cers about your what to watch for so if you talked about these outside matchups one of the one of the bummers last year was that boyin injury right out of the gate meaning that Elijah huzzy had to leave his spot outside on the corner and moov to a different secondary spot how big a deal do you think it is this year huzzy being able to be back at that quarterback position oh it's a major deal because husy was one of our very productive uh DBS last year and um Minnesota's bringing back a guy who had like 831 receiving yards eight touchdowns so with huy being our best our best uh option at corner we we gonna need him to match up against the top guys that we that we face up we week week in and week out he's a guy that's shown that he could do it and I believe if he just lined up outside and just playing corner I mean even though he was productive inside as a star his main his main Niche and his major strength is playing outside so we we gonna need husy to match up with those key guys if he if he's able to take take away take away the QB's number one option then that's then that's big because like sometimes it makes the QB hold the ball more and it allows for more more opportunities for sacks love that and obviously we're uh looking forward to see what Marcus Allen can do on the other side of the field mirroring our guy huzzy over there speaking of guys that have transferred up from the FCS level and shown that they belong like like Minnesota's quarterback uh huzzy is obviously one of those uh cers really quick let me rattle off my what to watch for and then we'll keep going on I'll see if you got any responses to these number one for me can Connor Harold or Max Johnson whoever it is do enough through the air to keep the Minnesota defense honest because we know they're going to be keyed up to try to stop Omari on Hampton so we're trying to watch what that balances we knew what we had with Drake May and we knew it was more the other way can Omar on Hampton and the offensive line do enough to take all the pressure off of Drake May number two for me speaking of Carolina through the air what wide receiver is gonna emerge as the dude last year in this game it was Nate McCullum who went wacky and wild I think it was 15 for 165 if I remember correctly obviously there's the the the Nesbit and the copenh of it all the tight ends are going to be great you got a deep stable of wide receivers it's just who's going to emerge and who's going to be that Deep Field threat I'm watching out for that number three what does the Jeff Collins defense look like we all know and and I know it pains Cersei as a Carolina defensive player that the defense just has not been able to do it at the level they want to the last several years under coach chisik unfortunately game one last year against South Carolina they looked like they were going to set the world on fire and then it just didn't happen at the same level the rest of the season so I'm really excited to see what this uh defense looks like you talked about the defensive line up front need a lot from them and there's a lot of possibility there man cannot wait for the butcher to start carving dudes up and then finally in the what to watch for for me kind of flip of the Carolina side what will Minnesota be able to do through the air last year their success was on the ground in this game only had 133 passing yards last year uh we expect them to have more uh this year because it's a different quarterback that they have in and different capabilities there but that that's what I'm watching for is how can this Carolina defense shut down not only especially if Taylor's gimpy at any level not only shutting down the ground game but how will these cornerbacks we just talked about do work on the outside as well so cers to all of those things do you have any uh any more to say on those any any more comments on that before we carry on um for the offensive side like you said with the receivers and the tight ends we have the stable of receivers and the in the tight end room that we have who can win that one-on-one matchups um because if there if they're stack in the Box to stop amarian then there's gonna be opportunities outside like we got nesbet who's who's a Proto prototypical NFL tight end these days um the Deep the Deep thread we have in JJ Jones who can stretch the field is good still you mentioned Nate mccullin he's back so I'm look I know he's looking to continue to prove itself and work work the slot so if they're if they're focus on stopping the run which they're probably are because of the all americ running back we have in Hampton then yes man like like we got to be able to win our one-on-one matchups and hopefully whether it's Max Max Johnson or Conor Harold they can they can exploit those one-onone individual matchups and make and make plays man because we'll need it because once once the guys start making plays on the outside you can't stack the Box no more so it's pretty much going to be picky poison and if they got to loosen up in the back end just to uh cover our guys and be able to hang with our guys in the back end than that or let's open up more holes and possibilities for Maran and then I would say that like I'm also leaning more still more so towards Conor because it'll be opportunities for him to either pull the ball and make plays with his feet if nothing there in the past game he's had he's shown that type of athletic ability where he could get outside and uh make plays with his feet and out run out run Defenders used saw him in a couple of uh what do they call it garbage garbage time when Carolina put the game Out Of Reach and then Conor got to play um he was able to Showcase what he could do I think he had like a can't remember exactly who they was playing but he had like a 50 yard Scramble for a touchdown like he went down the sideline couldn't nobody catch him so he shown the ability to um to make to make moves and make plays with his feet it's nothing there in the passing game so yes one-onone match up for sure that receiver room and then the flip side with our DBS if we can we can hold up on the outside against their receivers man that allows aot we have too many uh guys up front who could get out after the quarterback you mentioned the butcher uh Dez dezman and um it's time go nuts man it's time absolutely they got they gota yeah because you you can't keep sliding even though butcher gonna get his I don't want to see people sliding protection his way and using tight ends to chip him like if you got two guys on each side is like like again pick your poison like who who you who you g to stop and then like there has to De has to be that Force b b gonna be relentless and getting out there the QB as well but yeah we need those guys to step up exactly yeah man gonna be a lot of fun to watch all right gang here's the deal we need to talk about our key matchup that we have in this game GNA give you the G the game details to get you ready for all that and of course we got to make predictions you probably know which way we're going but hey we America's number one Sportsbook Isaac shade dor Cersei getting you ready for the Carolina season opening football game tonight at Minnesota we'll give you all the game tals game details coming up in just a second but before we get to that cers I I want to share something kind of similar to our what to watch for butand if you're watching for one specific key matchup in this game what is it for you me for me of course I'mma go go with our guys on defense I want to see the match up between the receiver Daniel Jackson that that was the number one receiver from Minnesota I want to see him go up against Elijah huzi that's G to be a good match up out out of the gate that one-on-one coverage because we may bring some pressure so guys gotta be able to hold up outside oneon-one and for the Run game I want to see the match up between darus Taylor and power Echo Power EO is our leader at linebacker who's a who's a Relentless guy he he's always tough he hey man he flies around with his head cut off and with Taylor coming with Taylor coming back looking to prove something power I bet power wants to prove that he's the guy now that say gray has moved on to the NFL so so yeah those two matchup for sure I'm looking I'm looking forward to I love that for me I'm actually going to go with a position group matchup and it's the Carolina offensive line against the Minnesota defensive line and the reason for this for me is kind of twofold number one this offseason the offensive line which is going to be revamp outside of Willie lamin he's the lone like returning main contributor um and I feel like they've been the most questioned because they're the most question marks it's the most uncertain position but it's got to hold up this offensive line unit because it's got to clear space for the running backs to be able to have these holes to get through and it's also got to give Connor Herold or Max Johnson time to do what they need to do as you talked about earlier keeping that clean pocket whatever it is against what we expect to be a stout Minnesota defensive line Carolina's got to win both trenches but this is the one that I am going to be looking at first how will the new Carolina offensive line hold up against Minnesota's defensive line all right cers game details tonight August 28th Thursday game time 8 Eastern 7 Central at Huntington Bank Stadium this game is going to be on national TV on Fox as we said just a second ago FanDuel has it North Carolina minus one and a half Minnesota was actually favored in this game by two and half for a good while it's just recently flipped series record these two teams have only ever played one time that was last year in Keenan stadium in game three tar Hills took care of work in that one obviously both teams come into this game 0 and0 neither team played in week zero so again the line minus one and a half the over under is set at just 50 points 50 and a half points Z noris Cersei how do you see this one playing out brother um of course I'm G say seeing Carolina getting a win I'm gonna go with a score of 2110 Carolina um yeah but it's it's like I said it's GNA come down like you said who can control that line of scrimmage um who can make the plays when they need to in their one-on-one matchups and can can you know can Carolina defense uh get their hands on the ball and create some turnovers man turn turnovers also um help when you're on the road man like you said control that crowd to take them out of it man the turnovers is a major part of it that's a great point now I I'm I kind of love you giving what we as Carolina people would think of as a low score we're so used to dropping 30 on the regular in recent years thanks to the likes of Sam how and Drake May and I I think that's a real thing right like I was thinking 27-20 was going to be my score for this game Carolina so winning and uh covering but uh 27-20 it hits the under so I'm going with Carolina to cover but the game hits the under and cers you're right there as well and I think there's really something to that Carolina is cannot be a team this year that just wins by outscoring everyone the defense it's time to show up and show out absolutely one last one last thing I want to say about week one in particular do not overreact to week one Win Lose or Draw whatever happens it's week one you never know what wacky kind of things could happen there are a lot of weeks ahead for Carolina hopefully they win this thing and can take lots of great stuff away from it but uh C just any final thoughts as you start to think about this game the matchup Personnel Coach Brown anything at all um I just want to I want us to come out as me again I'm leading I'm a defensive guy so like I said it's time for the defense to step up uh we gota we gotta be consistent we gotta be relentless and keeping pressure on the QB we got to be able to get our hands on the ball on the back end whether it's not it can't just be linebackers all the time getting picks even know interception interception it still counts but I like to see our defense I like to see our defense get get their hands on the ball and and make plays like turn those turnover not only get the interception but turn those into the points ourselves like take someone back for touchd Downs man like get on the board that way that's that's a big momentum change and a big momentum flip so like I said it's time for it's time for those guys to step up and be and be ready man uh hopefully Marcus Allen knows the challenge ahead ahead of him because if huzzy is on top of his game this season they're going to be coming Marcus way so that allow that'll give Marcus a lot of opportunities to show what he could do and he can be just as productive I mean he's he's long he has the athletic ability he can run so yes it's time I can't wait to see what what our guys are ready to do man it's gonna be great that's a great Point yes I think Markus is gonna get uh targeted a lot because ain't nobody trying to go over to huzzy man that's that's a good word y'all it's almost time we're finally gonna see this Jeff Collins defense we're finally going to figure out what M Brown's been keeping up his sleeve at the quarterback position it's going to be a great day a great night make sure that if you are not part of the locked on tar Hills Discord channel that you come
