well this was the authoritarian horror we woke up to today no cigarettes and alcohol as in the Oasis song but what it refers to is that karma is apparently set to ban smoking in Pub Gardens uh also near to football grounds outside nightclubs uh on Pavements by hospitals and universities small parks and basically anywhere else he can think of uh what is he thinking I mean this is Nanny State overreach gone mad uh smoking is a legal activity uh why is he trying to outlaw it there are still more than six million people consenting adults who smoke in this country we can't demonize them and treat them like some kind of Paras uh they're not allowed to smoke in pubs that's probably wise you know I mean I've never been that keen on all of that but uh you know smoking has been increasingly banned from all sorts of spaces but outside outside I mean why why would he do this uh your thoughts please uh Isabelle well my thoughts are that actually it's just not that much of a problem so why are we putting time and effort and controversy into fixing it I mean I'm not really sure who this is aimed at is it is it aimed at trying to in some guided way protect Pub workers from being exposed to outdoor cigarette smoke I mean the amount of that would be infinitesimal you know it's not like Pub workers are generally lightering around clouds of cigarette smok and Gardens um if it's about protecting customers well I mean how many pubs do you know where there's a fug of cigarette smoke outside that you as a c as a as a non-smoking customer afford for to be around I mean as a non-spoken customer you can just take your business elsewhere so I just don't really understand the rationale for this I don't see the business case for it don't see the health case for it don't really see the social case for it what about uh our toned deaf prime minister who must have seen on or at least been informed of the outpouring of horror the Furious protests all over social media today people talking about it everywhere people on the radio on the television leave us alone get out of our lives uh he leaves this for a couple of hours he must have been told all about it and when he's interviewed he says yes I am considering this I mean for God's sake what is wrong with this guy think he's completely detached you know it it is bizarre isn't it it is completely bizarre given the scale of the challenge that he faces this is a guy who has had the most horrendous few weeks of effectively losing control of Law and Order on our streets and then reacting like some kind of demented authoritarian you know locking up or parading around Granny's and and teenagers in order to set an example of them he's presided over the most awful thing which is the using of our justice system which should be colorblind for political iCal purposes and not content with just taking a breath and stepping back from things a bit and thinking right where are we at you know let's take stock here because a few things haven't gone too well so far just seems hellbent on pissing off a whole other group of people exactly right let Let's uh remind ourselves of the Prime Minister on his authoritarian tyrannical weird smoking ban here he is take it away K boy my starting point on this is to remind everyone that over 880,000 people lose their lives every year because of smoking um that's a preventable death it's a huge burden on the NHS and of course it's a burden on the taxpayer so yes we are going to take decisions in this space more details will be revealed but this is a preventable uh series of deaths and we've got to take the action to reduce the burden on the NHS and reduce the burden on the taxpayer everybody watching this who uses the NHS will know that it's on its knees uh we have to relieve the burden and that's why I spoke before the election about moving to a preventative model when it comes to health I want the NHS back on its feet but I also want it fit for the next you know 75 years just as we've had a a brilliant 75 years um already um and that means taking action in relation to preventable uh deaths and these are 80,000 a year preventable deaths yeah and if he made uh if he went the whole hog if he had the courage of his convictions like so many politicians before him including that other weasel rishy sunak who set this ball in motion by saying you know no one under the age of 20 or whatever it was will be able to buy cigarettes in two years time all that garbage uh if these are holier than thou we're going to save you all from cigarettes from yourselves they had the courage of their convictions they' make it illegal but then again then they wouldn't get the 8.8 billion pound they get every year from Duty on cigarettes so they'll still happily reap the rewards of all these people smoking while he chunts on like that absolutely unbelievable today uh Isabelle Nigel farage was on Julia Harley Brewer's show uh you know as an inveterate smoker why shouldn't he be uh here's his reaction it's not Nan statism it's authoritarianism it is you know I know what is best for you and you will damn well do it and what I'm going to do is I'm going to take your legal activity and make it illegal I mean that's really what they're saying here a smoke free Britain by 2030 really will it be drugs free by 2030 will it be obesity free will it be alcoholism free I mean look you know this is a massive overreach by government I I I lo these people and their very instincts if you over regulate prescribe and over tax the product you basically Drive something that is legal into the hands of those that deal in illegal drugs there have been 97 firebombings of shops and homes in Melbourne in the last two years alone between Waring tobacco gangs it's just astonishing so I think there's a you know a real danger here that you effectively Drive tobacco into the arms of a drug dealers you make it a prohibited substance uh sunac was on the same course as well and you finish up with the law of unintended consequences do we want our kids to smoke no want our kids to drink too much no we don't want any of these things you've got to do it by education let people make their own decision yeah I mean Nigel's uh as usual right on the money there and uh basically this is an attack on freedom isn't it it's an attack on freedom of choice we've already got the education secretary Bridget philipson attacking freedom of speech now we've got an attack on freedom of choice this government wants to control us it wants to interfere in every aspect of Our Lives he had the tarity during the election campaign to say my government I can promise you will tread lightly on your lives well he's trampling on them right now isn't he and what this is is a complete an utter twaddle to frame this as a way of as he put it get the NHS back on its kns s is not on its knees because of people smoking outside in Pub Gardens I mean undoubtedly smoking in general puts a burden on the NHS as does being fat as we were talking about last night as Does having too much to drink as does many other unhealthy habits um but Banning smoking Outdoors is not going to actually stop people smoking indoors in their own homes um and that's just as damaging more damaging than going to the pub to have a cigarette because it's an enclosed space so this is completely wrongheaded as you say it is utterly overbearing it's interfering and as far as I'm concerned uh it's just another reason to be utterly disillusioned with this lot not that I ever had any Illusions um and to keep reminding people that alternatives are available next time you have the chance to show this lot exactly what you think of them just it's just very very strange to me the way that they're just as you uh so eloquently put it just now pissing everyone off I mean they just are uh already I think they've screwed it I really do
