2024 well you you look for that I want to say I got it here oh you have it here I got it got okay all right again again we're Treading Water we never do that it it's just weird and I had to bring this up because uh I wrote this down here's my dream and Chris Quimby was our manager at the time even though where I'm describing here Black Rock predates her it doesn't really matter CU it's a dream M it's 4:00 a.m. at WCBS and we're preparing the morning newscast the scene is Black Rock the overnight anchor is toiling away The Newsroom is unusually busy with faces we don't know Chris Quimby is there looking Sullen the systems aren't working suddenly I hear a collective groan as four men at each big 16th floor Newsroom window pull black curtains across the glass I look to the studio the lights are turned out and the board is dark WCBS is no more I stand there in shock Martin Martin unro sees my face walks over and hugs me my first impulse is to quietly smile yes Severance then then I think of all the people losing jobs then the emotion hits me I hold back tears as I look at the spot where the teletype machines were years ago and I think of my first time there in 1978 when dad drove me in for a tour yeah I tell Martin the story about how Ben Farnsworth was in the studio that morning subbing for Jim Donnelly this part is true this really happened the memories of that visit with Dad those years in that same spot the thread that has been woven through my life makes me realize how much a part of me this has been sad only scratches the surface but grateful too Paul exceedingly grateful not only to have worked with you thank you and all the people here at WCBS and the amazing listeners but um to have the opportunity to sit here with you right now and talk about Council my first few days as our reporter in Jersey reporter Peter hasell took me around showed me the robes introduced me to folks and they would call every few days to see how I was adjusting like a big brother former reporter writer and editor Jane Tillman Irving calling me to say leave on you'd use bad grammar in this story do it again and she was right she always was in co-anchor Vicky Allen felt so bad one night that I had to take a taxi in because somebody stole the tires off my car she paid the $80 fair for me to get in for my shift these are the kind of people who worked here that's why we were great you're listening to WCBS 880 magazine the Biden Administration announced a new plan today that would make it easier for Americans to cancel unwanted subscriptions Paul auster is the founder and CEO of better qualified in Eaton toown New Jersey he is known as America's Credit Repair man Paul joins us on the record on WCBS good to talk with you what kind of unwanted subscriptions are we talking about here oh Steve it could be any any number of subscriptions we we've become a nation of subscriptions Netflix Spotify Hulu uh Netflix PS4 Roblox It Go the list goes on and on and on so the reality is that many people are carrying these subscriptions unbeknown for them they don't real they might even be paying for them so the average family is paying over a couple hundred dollars a month in subscriptions but it's not so easy to just try to send an email or call somebody and say um hey Netflix I I don't want to subscribe anymore yeah it it takes literally it takes three seconds or less a click of a button to sign up and in most cases they make you jump through many many Hoops in order to cancel that very same subscription so something needed to be done I you know I don't know if it's a you know a Biden Administration or or whatever but something needed to be done because again the average consumer has no idea how many subscriptions they have and when they go to cancel it it's not that easy so they give up right and so then they just leave it alone and in some cases they're paying for those subscriptions and let's say you know you put on a credit card and you know the your credit card expires there are cases where consumers have now gotten late payments and fees act on to those very same subscriptions all right so tell us about this proposal this plan from the Biden Administration what would it do well it it's going to put some pressure on the companies that if you offer a subscription there should be some type of standard operating procedure in order for people to cancel that very same subscription right now there's nothing in place so hopefully they they create some uniformity amongst companies who wish to provide subscriptions I mean sometimes they're good right but there needs to be some type of uniformity against all companies to Pro to have people opt out or cancel the subscription does this plan go far enough or is it at least a good start well Steve again I always I always take a step back and say we as consumers we have to be somewhat accountable for our own behavior so uh I think it goes far enough to the point where it's top of the mind and it brings it brings it to light right so but the reality is the average consumer has to realize that we're responsible for our own action so if you sign up for something be prepared do you really need it do you really want it and and maybe before you sign up for the subscription you might ask how what is the cancellation policy that the company has before you actually sign up for the subscription now some companies Adobe is one that comes to mind are being sued by the FTC for making it virtually impossible to cancel subscriptions right yeah sure I mean Amazon's been called uh on the chopping block here for sure uh and again whether it's by Design or not it's just become that much harder for people to get out of these subscriptions that the administration thought it you know Wise to step in and say look on behalf of consumers the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau these are the organizations that are in place to help consumers and something needed to be done I mean this is it's really crazy when you look at it and again I did it myself I didn't realize I had some ongoing subscriptions and again you're paying $4.99 a month 29 night a month but those things start to add up for sure so I I I think the message here Steve before you actually WCBS 880 Magazine on Monday WCBS 880 will no longer broadcast the news WCBS has been The tri-state's Trusted source for decades we will always be grateful to you our listeners and to the men and women who made the station one of the Premier News operations in America household names then like Ed Bradley Pat sumerall could be a thunder shower in the next few hours and then we'll turn out mostly clear tonight down to 69 in Midtown overall pretty nice night across the balance of the area then partly sunny for tomorrow we're up to 85 uh there will be an afternoon or evening thunderstorm though a little bit more widespread tomorrow then mostly clear tomorrow night down to 69 very warm for Tuesday up to 88 and then hot and steamy on Wednesday at to 93 with an afternoon or evening thunderstorm and not as high for Thursday at City Harvest we're on the road every day rescuing millions of pounds of nutritious food for New Yorkers in need transforming surplus food into sustenance sustainability and smiles that's how we feed good hi it's Catherine chaffy the station has been a major part of my life I cut my teeth in that Newsroom it's been a long time since I was on the air but the station has remained a constant pillar for me a place that embodies the highest level of journalistic Integrity a special thank you to Tim sheld and Chris Quimby for hiring me and to Paul Wayne Steve Marla Peter Shan and the late French Sido for teaching me how to report and write but also for teaching me about Humanity Lisa chanrich thank you for being a great friend and the best producer I'm really going to miss hearing your voices every day when you need to know why when it matters most count on WCBS 880 news streaming 24/7 on the free honesty app [Music] listening to WCBS 880 magazine obesity has been skyrocketing since the covid pandemic why is that Sean Hopkins is senior VP of chart the New Jersey Hospital Association Center for Health analytics research and transformation Sean welcome let's talk about this tell us about the Obesity rates postco well uh let me start off by maybe talking a little bit about um uh what CDC is seeing at the national level uh between 2017 and 2020 um CDC estimates estimates that 19.7% of us children were obese that's up from 13.9% in 2000 that's a 42% increase and contained within those numbers are uh the fact that um severe obesity Grew From 3.6% to 6.1% and severe obesity is is essentially defined by somebody with a body mass index or BMI of 40 or greater and that could be as much as 100 PB over weight and that 3.6% to 6.1% increase is actually a 69% increase so those Trends are very very disturbing when we look more closely at emergency department activity at New Jersey hospitals we see that in 2017 about 30,000 uh patients presented at hospitals with obesity as part of their diagnosis in 2022 that was almost 70,000 that's 126% increase so that is is certainly a trend that is of concern to us at the hospital Association why do you suppose this is did we get lazy during the pandemic and and maybe develop bad eating and exercise habits well you know I mean when we talk about the pandemic itself uh we can't discount the fact that closures of um Child Care Centers and schools which limited access uh to food accessibility such as School breakfast and school lunch programs physical activity including recess physical education um uh inter Recreational Sports all those were canceled and unavailable and what the loss of those structured activities really led to was increased isolation um and potentially some psychological stress uh and you put all that together and that lens itself is an opportunity for something such as obesity and more specifically childhood obesity uh to start to exacerbate themselves is this leading to other problems diabetes heart disease and the like absolutely when we looked at the the data the uh the emergency room visit data what we saw that when obesity was present in a in a a Pati's record um 55% of those patients also were hypertensive 30% were diabetic 15% were asthmatic 10% were depressed and 13% were suffering from anxiety so obesity does not play well with other chronic conditions it can serve as a pathway to these other chronic conditions and when we think about the fact that we're talking about children uh what we're trying to do is prevent these types of chronic conditions occurring um and growing in adulthood the best way to mitigate that is to try and start to deal with it with the Pediatric population Sean I wonder if you've broken it down by gender and ethnicities do you see this equally in men and women people of various ethnicities or is it more prevalent in some than others what we found is that is that um in in some instances we found that um uh it was really the areas of New Jersey that were when I refer to as medically underserved or economically challenged in many instances those can be communities of color um but it seemed like there was a uh the data showed us that there was a little bit more of a prevalence in those areas as well which is insightful because it allows us to go ahead and start to think about what we can do as far as taking corrected action where do we want to focus our energy what is the answer what can we do can this be reversed well certainly I think anything that is um know diet or lifestyle related has the uh the opportunity to be reversed I would say that the best way to improve overall health status is to mind data and identify the underlying causes of poor health status and then develop programs and initiatives that are designed to mitigate the prevalence of those conditions and obesity would be a great starting point um I can tell you that our hospitals um are very very actively involved in um uh Community uh health programs and uh to the two about $3.5 billion do a year uh and in those programs they're doing um things like promoting access to healthy foods um providing health education Health screenings um transportation services and in some instances housing so I think uh investing heavily in uh Community Health uh is an opportunity for us to get at these underlying causes that really can um inhibit someone's ability to have a fruit you know a long and fruitful life uh by getting at them early important information Sean Hopkins at chart the New Jersey Hospital Association Center for Health analytics research and transformation this is WCBS 880 magazine another reason to keep kosher new research from the University of Cambridge shows eating just two slices of ham a day raises the risk of type 2 diabetes by 15% the study involved more than 2 million worldwide it provides the most comprehensive evidence yet of the link between processed or red meat and the disease that is one of the most pressing dangers to Global Health more intend to escalate further but as the war in Gaza rages on and negotiations in Cairo for a temporary ceasefire and hostage release deal progress slowly the threat of Regional War remains there's also concerned Democrats aren't doing enough to address this war cbs's Christian bides well the her team is still riding High there is criticism from some Democrats over not featuring any speakers from the pro Palestine movement at the DMC defeating Trump is the top concern but we can do that and we can also give space create space for people voices that are marginalized we missed an opportunity to do
