(17) Kansas Jayhawks (6-1) vs. Kansas State Wildcats (3-4) - October 26, 2024

welcome to Manhattan Kansas the little apple where they have taken a large bik out of college football the Man For Whom the stadium is named Bill Snider built this program from the losingest in the history of college football to a formidable Foe and home of the Kansas State Wildcats there's nothing quite like a great rivalry matchup in college football the bitterness the intensity the lifetime of memories that will come as a result of what we're about to see in this one as we'll see the number 17 team in the country the Kansas Jayhawks taking on a squad hoping to prevent and The Jayhawks will boot it away to start the game he'll start the return inside his SP and the coverage team able to make the tackle so Kansas State's offense is going to be backed up thanks to that lackluster return there are always butterflies to start a game but when you have a rivalry like this the adrenaline is pumping on overdrive guys they aren't all the same we say that but we know differently the blood is boiling the temperature is hot Jesse you want this week more than most yeah and David we played in these games before everything just seems to be heightened right the game seems to be moving faster the crowd noise feels louder your composure will be tested early in a game like this and he found plenty of Running Room on that one before the defense was finally able to get him down off the play fake on first down grabbed behind the line it's Swanson oh he just handled it poorly and it's a fumble defense falls on the ball going to be a turnover the more hats you have near the football the more likely you are to cause a fumble so many guys with their hands wrapping around guys the ball's bound to pop out occasionally and you got to be in the right place at the right [Applause] time here comes the offense on first down receivers telling the quarterback what they see looking for face it's Neil he's knocked down in the back field he'll lose a couple after getting knocked back to open this drive it's second and 12 trying play action slips a tackle but he can't get away again and down he goes and the trickeration is not so tricky man this offense has been bad how about the first play nowhere to go nowhere to run tackle for a loss second play you get your quarterback sacked and the third play play now we're sitting in third and long right where this defense wants to get us I'm not positive but that first down marker might be in the next County on Third and long doesn't need to take the check down going to try to get it himself and he gets it just beyond the line of scrimmage before he gets down now on fourth down they'll settle for a field goal try looks as if this will be a 51y y attempt no good after the Miss no change in the score and here comes the Kansas State offense back onto the field last time they had it they put it on the deck the football was not riveted to their rib cage Jesse need five points of pressure moving forward no doubt I'll tell you they knew coming into this game that turnovers were going to be critical they might give themselves a mulligan for that one David but that can't keep happening yeah but don't change who you are and what you are don't get gunshot because of mistakes I think that usually turns into more mistakes so keep doing you keep being aggressive good pick up on the ground and they'll Mark him down at the 39 Johnson looking to throw fires to the tight end gets it to the 46 yd line first down for this offense the wild cats come to the line with a new set of downs running back searching for a hole they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one lost one on that last one it's second and 11 brings up second down caught in the back field it's cus and they're able to force him out of bounds after a short pickup now facing a third and long from the 50 yd line from the gun wants to pass takes a shot as he lets it go and how about that DB getting a hand in there and forcing the incomplete pass K State sends the putt team onto the field ready to boot it away a fairly short distance here toward the sidelines not his best work the Kansas offense returns to the field you want to talk about taking the wind out of your sails Drive the ball down the field and miss the field goal David you know what don't leave it up to Kickers execute better offensively I think you move the ball nice you got to keep that in mind but Palmer I think you got to stay aggressive and don't settle for Fields yeah because you got to know there's just no margin for error right now you just have got to be able to execute at Power he is going nowhere stop at the line of scrimmage now facing a third and long third they want to throw it safe completion on the screen and he runs through one tackle and picks up a few the j-hawks will punt this one away getting our first first look of the afternoon at the punter first one is away and boy did he put him work in that loss last week kicking it five times and the offense takes the field ready to go back to work hand off from the shotgun and the defense holds firm no pickup at all on that play got stuffed on first down it's second and 10 from the gun the running back looking for room tackle is made at the 28 after a pickup of three they've made third down offensive key it'll be tested on Third and long from the 28th Johnson wants to throw it gets rid of it he's got his man he is tackled but it'll be a fresh set of downs they've got it at the 37 it's first and 10 out of the gun the running back has it and how about that interior defense stuffing the run for nothing they got nothing on the last play it's second and 10 looking for a crease it's giddens they keep feeding him in this running game and the defense is having none of it it's been that way all day on third down going up top complete to the left when of room on that play and they find their way to the 36 and the Wildcat it's moving quickly to the line and the quarterback knew exactly where he wanted to go with the football had time spins the ball deep nice job by this offense understanding what the defense is giving him and creating the explosive play and the runner is down and so is a [Applause] flag they'll decline the penalty here and let the result of that play stand and here comes play number six of the drive quick completion on the out they make the stop but not before he takes a chunk out of what they need to move the sticks they line up with some serious work to do if they want to convert this one coming after him and they can't make the play on third down they're happy enough to try to take the points as the field goal unit heads out looks as if this will be a 51 yard attempt and the try is no good and after the Miss guys the score stays right where it is looking for a productive play on first down they're going to open this drive with a pass can't hold on he had him right down the middle and he flat dropped it and now on second down for this offense they'll try the Run they could have used a a little bit more there pick up of three it's third and seven they line up and it is a long way to the sticks from here to the air it's Daniels they've got the screen set up and with that stop we are headed toward the end of the first [Applause] quarter fourth down and the punt team sends it the other way bottled him up lot a whole lot of room to run on that return and that's how this period will come to an end it's been a defensive battle through the first period and the stats tell that tale well based on that we can hope to see a little more offensive explosion here in the second quarter as we get ready to get things started they'll see if they can find some Running Room on the right here running with power and he'll step out of bounds after a very productive play six- yd pickup on first down leaves him with second and [Applause] four they'll try to get the edge with the toss play here he's there to make the stop lining up to convert third down defense way too anxious there and they just hand them a first down with a penalty neut on so the offense accepts the penalty and they'll get a little farther away from their own End Zone using the quick game nice pitch and catch there and they'll have enough for the first down the wild cats come to the line with a fresh set of downs on the ground it's giddens able to kick his way forward forward for a decent game before the defense gets him down after the productive first down play it's second and six FL back to it draged down to the turf but not before getting the first down offense working from the pistol the give to the back you'll take this every time five yds on the first down play and here comes the off on second down brings up second they run the reverse tackle was made after the first down here's this offense with a fresh set of downs got it behind the line it's brown off he go got enough space touchdown Wildcats Le the grab and finish the deal in the end zone number one and wouldn't I start for this offense the throw game getting working getting the touchdown pass this quarterback getting a little bit of confidence this passing game getting in a rhythm nice start for this offense lining up to tack one more onto that lead and with the extra point they get the first seven of the game personal fouling the kicker defense the officials offer the deal and the coach accepts it they will take the penalty not going to give him a chance to make a play as they boot that thing through the end zone fly set first down to the ground with the back he breaks a tackle that run epitomizes a veteran Savvy senior who knows how to find Space looking for a man it's Daniels flags flying as the pass is incomplete let's see what the call is so the decision has been made and the coach will take the penalty they've put themselves in a hole to start it's first in 20 the snap sets up the throw caught over the middle it's Casey they bring him down but a solid pick up to put them in position to pick up a first down quarterback making adjustments with his receivers they're going to run it creating good effort on that one to work his way up to the 4 2 ball is at the 42 yd line close to four down territory here's third and short they'll Run play action got rid of it in a hurry but he couldn't find his man it's incomplete and the j-hawks will try to pin them back with the punt let's see if he can help the coverage team out with this one looking for a block it's Lockett he's brought down but there's also a penalty marker down let's see what this is about personal foul R the Ki [Applause] defense the officials offer the deal and the coach accepts it they will take the penalty he'll come out throwing on first down quickly complete and good coverage by the defense just a short game offense gets set for second down up looking for space it's Neil fights off in Def Defender crosses the 40 gets it down to the 35 before he stopped a gain of six after the last run would you just give it to him again on third down snap it to the back and boy is he close to that first down maybe just a couple of inches short they've decided to try to go for the field goal here and it's no good after that Miss still a seven game guys K state has the ball back and the power cat offense returns to the field how about the way they attack the last time they had the ball mixing run and pass and winding up in the end zone Jesse that's why recruiting is so important they've got weapons at every skill position on the field any of these guys is dangerous if they touch the football let's see what they do on this drive David fires into traic picked off bringing it back and what a play and to return as he takes it all the way back inside the 10 and they'll first and the offense takes the field eager to go back to work he'll start this drive f firing into double coverage and he picked it off and he's brought down and this defense gets the ball back for and if that don't light your fire your wood is W the best play on a field is when the big boy the most athletic people on the field the defensive lineman make gamechanging awesome super athletic interceptions and here comes the Kansas State offense back onto the field mistakes are going to happen as they did on that last drive now how will they respond Jesse and this is the kind of guy who's going to take full accountability that was my bad that's on me I'm about to lead this offense now down the field to score some points dang Palmer I wish I would have played with you I didn't play with many quarterbacks that were just like yeah my bad hey guys I got this sorry about that it was more we should have ran a better route strong run and useful picks up four out to the nine third coming on Third and long he has to throw for it nice defensive way to get a hand in there and knock it away and the Wildcat send out the punt unit this will be a second time they've had to kick it away and he muffs it it's loose excellent coverage that time didn't give him any room to set up a big return so we'll see the offense on the the field to start this drive they'll run it from the gun and they picked up nine on first down it'll bring up second and short looking for a crease to the left what a where did he go and he's tripped up but not before picking up the first down here's this offense with a fresh set of downs they'll throw it on first down got his man and he's brought down after a nice game the clock has reached the two-minute Mark and they have a chance to at least cut into this lead before the break receiver looks it in it's complete and he goes out of bounds after coming up with positive yardage there looking downfield it's Daniels and it'll be incomplete this defense is physical and pass deep not a lot of ground to cover and not much to defend a big third down in the Red Zone they're bringing heat and they got him he'll get him down for the sack the defense going to stop the clock with the timeout they want to make sure they have everybody on the same page and on fourth down here comes the field goal unit no good and they couldn't cut into the lead it's still a seven-point game offense getting set for first down and man this kicker is now 0 for three in this game and you got to wonder what his confidence is like right now he's cost his team nine points so far still at their own 20 after that last incompletion it's second and 10 he's looking to throw quickly out to the tight end he's brought down quickly minimal gain there still a bit short of the first down this offense looking at a third down after that last completion gets it out quickly and they reacted well to the completion but it was too late to keep them from getting the first down they want to just keep throwing it got it in the middle it's Swanson and that is good versatility there and a big hit from the backer in pass coverage but a little time lets it go it's complete on the right side stopped at the 44 but he got 10 on the play Kansas State back at it after picking up the first down looking to move it through the air makes the grab and they got the defense on that one and they get it to the 29 yd line man if I'm a defense I got to find a way to get some more pressure on the quarterback or disrupt their timing and their Rhythm I can't give him these big chunk plays through the air I got to be maybe a little bit more aggressive or do something a little bit different pulls it in it's gens and they wrap him up but not before he gets enough on the catch for the first down trying to cap this drive with the pass finds his big tight end and he might be known for run pits but that was a sure and heavy tackle on the tight end the offense will quickly use a timeout they'll line up for a second down play Johnson looking to throw going for six and good coverage and better Hands by the defender to knock it down in the end zone couldn't find his man last time and that leaves him with a third and six finds his man down the middle they get him on the ground but not before he gets enough for the first down he wants to throw it he CAU it and he won't be able to get in as the defense gets him down at the one one more snap coming before juice boxes and orange slices quarterback keeps it and he runs it in for the score touchdown Kansas State look it's still early but we have some real distance being put on the scoreboard right now you do it's early but you got to find something positive right now everything going in the other direction so how you going to respond when you get hit the mou early in this football game got to find something positive quick getting set for the point after on for the extra point and the extra point pushes the lead to 14 they put it in the end zone with a 12pl scoring drive and they capped it off with a one yd Pune Kanas Z he'll bring it out from inside his own 10 nice job EX cuting all of the assignments as they put a stop to that return at the 22 and the offense will play it safe take a knee and head to half [Applause] time that's the end of the second quarter that means it's time to join Kevin in our halftime update thanks so much guys and I need not tell you rivalry games always bring out a ton of emotion and no surprise we saw just that in the first half today and there is no better place to start this half time than by reviewing how this wide out has been a Onan wrecking CLW the kid's been everywhere and I love how he's willing to go across the middle but that he also has the Jets to burn these DBS on the Deep ball if this defense wants to actually come back in this one they better hide his cleats that said let's get back to the field and our guys in the booth to see who comes out on top of this rivalry contest C just gets the ball back and the jhawk offense is ready to go to work trailing by a couple of scores they'd like to generate some confidence here early in the third quarter down two possessions the coaching staff met in at halftime and they've probably scripted this opening drive just like they do at the start of the game they've now got an idea of what plays they feel most confident in what plays their quarterback is seeing the best to go out here and execute a scoring well and it's nice to get the ball first like I got the first opportunity to close the gap a little bit apply some great game pressure with these guys so I think getting the ball first driving down scoring right here would be huge the j-hawks decide to pun it away he'll try to really get into this one he'll bring it back it's lock it he'll put a stop to that return as he gets it up to the 41 yd line and the offense takes over to dip into its Bag of ball plays he wants to throw that one didn't not go well tackled in the back field for a loss of six line getting set on second down Johnson wants to throw it missed receiver there it's incomplete this is a third and long he's looking downfield to throw and they won't make the connection going for the big play Kansas state will have to putt it away doesn't say much for your drive when you're looking forward to the punt nine they've extended this lead guys but sometimes in a rivalry game you get down and you fight back that much harder man you've seen crazy comebacks and crazy swings of momentum and rivalry games you just need that first thing to break your way Palmer and I think it really comes down to their keepy Playmakers David they can come back but these guys need to take ownership Now's the Time in this type of game they have got to step up and start making plays and let's check in with Kevin Conor in the studio Kevin Hey guys let's take a look at what's happening in a great top 25 matchup Ohio state is in front they've LED for most of the game however Brutus isn't exactly putting this one in the win column just yet they're up by four over Nebraska just another week of college football where we've come to expect the unexpected fellas oh and how about that I know Kevin and those guys will be keeping an eye on it for us got eight on first down now looking at a second and two hand off to the lone back he's knocked down in the back field he'll lose a couple guys this offense is already reeling down multiple possessions really need to cash in on this drive to the air it's Daniels working the middle it's complete he's going to have enough to pick up the first down as they stop him at the 33 yd line and the j-hawks come to the line with a new set of downs they'll throw it on first down just a short pass pass to the tight end and the defense settled in to stop that one for a short gain got the completion on the last play still some work to do on second down off play action that's caught it's Casey they make the stop trying to pick up just a little bit at a time to get to that first down marker come to the line at the 42 facing a third and short they're going to throw it again he makes the connection third good job running that route to get past the sticks because he got nothing after the catch looking for a physical attack from the gun and maybe he'll get back to the line of scrimmage but no more than that they got nothing on the last play it's second and 10 the give to the right and he's able to find a little bit of Running Room before they get him down they need one yard on third down to keep this one going this will be the eighth play of the drive they'll try to run for it on the move at the 30 he's Off to the Races and he's loose and he'll take it to the house touchdown Rock Chu jhawk boy did he just Scorch that defense for that score he shows you all of it Rees he's got he's got the speed he's got the agility this dude's a big time playmaker you just give him the ball and he'll find different ways to kill you on different [Music] plays he'll try to tack on one more exra point and after the extra point they're now down 21-7 so it's an 80 yd drive and that was some way to cap it off with a 42 yd touchdown JN and he takes this from inside the five really disciplined job by the coverage unit to get down there and make the stop at the 19 K state has the ball back and the power cat offense returns to the field using his legs it's gens and the defense stops him just short of the first down maybe needed a few more chain links to move the sticks HS in throws off the RPO that ought to be enough to give Kansas State the first down here's this offense with a fresh set of downs wants to throw on first down finds his big tight end a nice job by the defense there tackling the catch and smothering the tight end they know this offense is going to try to find him in the passing game in a lot of different situations that time perfect coverage and nice job bringing the big guy down not easy to do the encroachment penalty on the D gives the offense a free five yards Johnson looking to throw that pass is incomplete here comes the offense on second down he's looking to throw a little screen to the running back still on his feet at the 45 and they finally haul him down but not before the good catch and run someone not clear on the snap count it'll be a false start and they'll move it back false start so the decision has been made and the coach will take the penalty first down here for the offense quarterback on the keeper that's what you expect from a senior don't give them any extra yards great tackle there kept it on the ground last time let's see if they go back to it on second down he's looking to throw and that's going to be incomplete a lot of contact on the play but no Flags it'll be third down if they can convert here that type of play can really give you a shot of momentum on Third and long he's going to have to throw for it and that'll be incomplete they certainly weren't afraid to take a shot there and now it's Fourth Down Kansas state will have to punt it away signal goes into the air and he makes the fair catch at the 10 the Kansas offense returns to the field they cut into the deficit the last time they had it forced the punt and now they can really make this a game and you're right back in this thing you're creating some momentum you got to score you got to stop this offense Jesse has a chance now to make this an absolute barn burner the ball game yeah it's one play at a time though right you're not going to get it all back in one One play just go out do your job execute keep this thing going down the field if things go well like David said we've got a game one more quarter to go and it looks as if we are ready to play on first down from their own 22 he's going to pass all kinds of room to throw that one in there there building momentum picking up a chunk of yardage moving the chains out to the 34 on the run it's Neil and he was fortunate not to lose yardage on that play able to wedge it back to the line of scrimmage got stuffed on first down it's second and 10 he's looking to throw good timing on the quick out and that defense is there to guide him out of bounds after a short game dropping back it's Daniels get it out on the screen makes the grab and it's enough for the first down before he's dragged to the ground the j-hawks come to the line with a fresh set of downs and that's a first down for the off out of the gun to give to the back not a whole lot of room there three yards maybe second and seven sixth play of the drive five coming up on second down looking again to throw got him in it's Arnold they make the stop right there good pickup it's still short of the first down y third they'll try to power their way ahead they'll move the chains good execution on third down they've got it at the 41 they move the chains on the ground now another first down pulls and fires it complete to the right and how about the efficiency on that one it'll bring up second and four tried to pound it on first down now back to the line trying to make that Rush think on the draw play here knocked down at the 25 yd line picked up 10 there and gets a first down here's this offense with a fresh set of downs looking to go up top on first down he just got rid of that one to save the down didn't see anything he liked he's now on second down the inside handoff maybe a three- yd pickup there third and long coming up they line up with some serious work to do if they want to convert this one from the gun the running back has it and he's brought down at after a nice game they've been great on third down now to finish the deal on first and goal they'll try to get it in with the run and he rolls into the house touchdown Kansas before that score considering last rights now all of a sudden they're not dead yet in fact they're feeling much better and they're alive and they've got a chance and I'm looking on the field right now I'm looking at at their sideline they're energized reys after that last score all of a sudden they believe they can come back and win this game this is a totally different looking team than what we saw earlier and with the extra point they're down a touchdown 2114 kickoff team has the ball teed up and they're about ready to go from inside the 10 here he comes he was hoping for something a little more Dynamic but they get him on the ground at the and here comes the Kansas State offense back onto the field looking for a gap it's gens got to be smart patient great vision uses all of that to get to the 29 the big pickup on first down leaves him with second and one running it to the right he steps out of bounds but it will be enough for a first down here's this offense with a fresh set of downs the run to the right and he's a real Nowhere Man tackled in this no game land they got nothing on the last play it's second and 10 grabbed in the middle it's Jackson and he's down after the short completion he did not make it to the first down marker in the gun and looking to throw on third down the quick out and he was Off to the Races finally tripped up at the 36 Kansas State quick to the line boy the defense really needed to get off the field there and they just couldn't do it and it's a fresh set of downs man that hurts when you're trailing late in the ball game you need those stops and you get him to third down you get him to those critical points how they get the first down you don't have many left you better get aggressive now this offense has a second down play he wants to throw it again here he goes breaking the pocket picks up the first down and gets down to avoid contact here's this offense with a fresh set of downs they'll run it they want to take their time here he's knocked down in the back field he'll lose a couple time is on their side and they're going to wind that play clock all the way down Johnson wants to throw it looking to the big tight end he almost had the pick and that could have given them a boost instead it'll be third down they'll go to the air caught behind the line it's brown he ended up going backwards on the play and they will not convert that third down so on fourth down here comes the field goal kicker in a huge spot it is is true as he puts three on the board and now the leades extended a little F and for a quick update let's go to Kevin Conor in the studio Gentlemen let's take a look at what's happening in this exciting college football game Colorado is currently trailing in this one but I've seen crazier things in fome field trust me when I tell you that guess what I'm saying is a comeback could be in the cors they're trailing by 11 to Cincinnati we' our eye on this one and everything else going on throughout the day guys and how about that one Kevin will be keeping an eye on everything going on elsewhere quickly complete he's run out of bounds but a big play on that one and it'll be a first down here's this offense with a fresh set of downs Ed the play fake now to throw fires to the wide out grabbed over the middle it's Arnold still running up the 40 nothing but green ahead and he gets it down to the four yd line before he's finally stopped a terrific run after the catch we've reached the two-minute warning and we see miracles in college football touchdown Jayhawks and they'll put that scoreboard operator to work and put six on the board and listen still a ways to go a great job by this offense getting you back in the ball game now we got a one possession game we got our score we did what we're supposed to do now how do we get this stop now the defense has to come up big and get me the rock back lining up for the pat on for the extra point and the extra point pulls them to within three 2421 about to kick it off after punching it in for the touchdown Kansas State 24 Kansas 21 on the run for inside his own five he was looking for more Running Room but none to be found as he stopped at the 23 K state has the ball back and the power cat offense returns to the field guys you want to be productive here and not go into a shell but you've got to take care of the ball yeah and I think you say productive he productive at this point in the game is running the clock and getting first down so Jesse I can expect this defense to be aggressive way up near the line of scrimmage bringing a bunch of bodies trying to stop the run and that's why it puts a lot of pressure on an offense David because you know if you do try to throw the football it's probably man coverage you probably getting Blitz it's going to be into a small window it is not easy to execute in this situation of the game they're trying to get to it and the pressure will get there the sack down he goes in the waning moments that could be a costly play K State sends the punt team onto the field ready to boot it away three and out they got stuck in Reverse they hope the punt can bail them out he was able to get that ball up to the 48 yd line before he stopped on the return the offense set for a first down play looking to throw it's Daniels unloads to the wide out and his throw is incomplete after the misfire it's second and 10 he's looking to throw fir toward the target he got a hand in there knocks it away incomplete a third and long coming up here from the gun wants to pass he took a hit as he threw it and couldn't deliver the football it's incomplete and fourth Down's coming desperate to convert and he'll throw it looking down the middle can't find his man it'll be incomplete and that is a heartbreaker this lead in the game the quarterback takes a KNE let's see what they've got on second down happy with the situation the quarterback will take a knee this is why the passion of college football runs so deep the rivalries and when you lose man is it stick with you no doubt about it GRE this was a game circled for a very very long time they knew how important this one was but David you can't let games like this beat you twice because this losing team now has to find a way to rebound and go out and play again no doubt got a rebound but this one stinks this is the one that you have circled for a reason it's it's a rival it's bragging right but you're right let's let's get back to practice this next week let's start focusing this
