Former Gov. Chris Christie Weighs In On Harris-Trump Debate | The View

[Applause] we're here talking about the impact that last night's presidential debate will have on the race and joining us now is ABC News contributor and former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie welcome so let's get right into it you debate excuse me you debated you know who before yeah yeah you know and so what what did you see last night well first I you know you saw someone and I think Sunny said this earlier you saw someone who's exquisitly well prepared and somebody who was not and and you know these things are hard yeah you you go out there you know there's 70 80 million people watching you um and you go out on the stage and you are by yourself in every way that you can be no staff no family no conversation no notes no notes no phones nothing and so if you're not well prepared um things can go off the rails pretty quick now when you add to it that um he's just a really angry guy yeah so you know I got asked before the the debate which Donald Trump was going to show up and I said well in the beginning the C Donald Trump will show up because he knows that's what he's supposed to be in order to do well I said but this is not a solo act this is an interactive thing and as soon as either one of the questioners or the vice president would get him riled up he'll go but you're saying he should be prepare he has no attention span and he's inable unable to retain information he's not saying he's capable of prep say how do you prepare well no look you can prepare even because I did it with him in 16 even with someone with his limited it was years older he's had a decline as my Aunt Julie would say he took a drop he took a drop yeah well and also yeah and he look he you can do that but you you he has to want to do it yeah and believe me he doesn't want to do it he doesn't like working hard what does he want to do he just wants to go out there and be him and we saw did well and last night though one of the boldest moves which we were just talking about is is the vice president came on that stage she reached for his hand and she was almost behind his Podium because they were clearly not going to meet in the middle do you think that set the tone for the night because I thought that was such an amazing move off look yeah if she threw him off then he's even stupider than some people think that was I mean look she did she did well last night but that was a layup okay you go and you shake someone's hands but that's how low the bar has been brought down well but that's right but but she doesn't get credit for getting over a bar that's this High my point is put the bar down there no no that's good and good for her and it's smart middle why didn't he that's not him like why didn't he meet her in the middle and because he is so much larger than she is she's my height I'm about 5'6 he's got to be about 6'2 and she looked taller than he looked but that's well certainly she was taller than him by going and by going and greeting him and and it was a display of confidence on her part as well and and he and the other thing that added to it last night was that I thought was one of the most disturbing parts of the whole thing was he wouldn't look at her right and so you know even when he was talking about her he kept looking straight ahead when she was talking about him he wouldn't look at her and and he didn't do that because he's so uncomfortable he was woman well I think sitation look I think it's debating this woman yeah now I could tell you that when I Was preparing him in 2016 he had enormous respect for Hillary Clinton he used to say all the time she's really smart she's really tough she's really good he doesn't think this about vice president Harris wrongly but he doesn't think that and he displayed it he displ lack of respect does it have to do with her skin color chance no I I don't think that's it in and of itself I I think it's I think it's that is it a part of it I think it's that she's vice president you know the old joke Joy right like a woman had two sons one went to see the other became vice president neither were ever heard from again like people don't respect vice presidents they go there and they have to stand behind the president and but don't but then why does he keep saying you did nothing for the past four years she had the power because she doesn't have the power well that exactly and if I were her I would have I would have said that I would have said you know look in the end last night she did what she had to do yes she did which was she's the Lesser known person yeah with the Lesser profile she needed to show those undecided voters that she belonged on that stage right and last night she showed she belonged on the stage and and that's why look I saw her campaign put out a challenge for a second debate right after the debate please stop yeah that'll never happen do it do not toy with perfection don't do that really seriously like you get in the ring against a guy who has had more presidential bats than anybody in history and you you knock him around yeah raise your arms go do two rallies a day raise some money and go home man yeah you know don't because nothing great can happen for her in a second debate I don't think she'll either do as well as she did this time okay or he could do better I have to ask you like like where were you and how how did you feel the moment when he said they're eating our pets well I was sitting with my wife watching it and we just burst out laughing like like you know I I looked her I said I can't believe he went there I can't actually believe he went there like he's following around Dopey JD Vance now right like on that issue and even JD is now say well maybe it wasn't exactly well and and and the last part of that is he threw his vice presidential candidate under the bus last night people haven't talked about that that much but he said well he wasn't speaking for me and we didn't talk about they came for Pence's head and he didn't defend that so I'm not surprised but but see here's the bigger part of this right Sarah is that that should tell voters yeah that if he's not there for him he's not going to be there for them either no that's right and that's much more he's Prov that already now we all know the one thing that uh you have to do to get under Donald's skin is is talk about size and especially crowd sizes and Hillary Clinton did say that he could be baited um the vice president she just went right there take take a look at this I'm going to actually do something really unusual and I'm going to invite you to attend one of Donald Trump's rallies because it's a really interesting thing to watch you will see during the course of his rallies he talks about fictional characters like Hannibal Lecter he will talk about windmills cause cancer and what you will also notice is that people start leaving his rallies early out of exhaustion and boredom now after she said that that was a burn in my view he became unhinged right he talked about baseless uh claims about uh Haitians uh eating pets uh are are you surprised how easily the vice president was able to bait him and when you did debate him uh debate prep with him in 2016 did eating pets ever come up or anything like that how that's a new phenomenon um the eating pets thing and no he didn't about had a elector either look no I'm not surprised how easily he can be baited um he wants to talk about that he needs to talk about that and he was yeah he was joyous about talking about that last night to to tell everybody how bigest Crowds Are and he has the biggest rallies of anybody in American history masculinity truthfully and his testosterone are we talking about here with these rallies well I think I think part of it I think part of it testosterone and I think part of it is somebody who is deeply insecure right and this is this is the way that he gets reinforcement of his insecurity to make him feel better is all these people are here so they must love me but look what was very good about what she did last night was that she just kind of dropped it in yes people say how do you get zingers on debates whatever when you try to do it it comes off fake and stilted she just kind of went like you know just through little bit in he went nuts well because she knew cuz she had been well prepared that that's all you have to do preparation preparation all you have to do with him you don't need to do a lot just do a little and he'll come and he did and and that's the bigger the bigger issue though is what it tells you about him as president yeah like okay this is all fun and games and it's and it's great to talk about but think about is that the person you want because if KLA Harris gets it Vladimir Putin gets it Kim Jong-un gets it the Ayatollah gets it they all understand they can do the very same thing to him and as a result to our country so it's a bigger problem than just the testosterone it is what does that mean if he's sitting behind the desk in the Oval Office and that's my bigger concern about it and she was able to figure out a way to put that on display will eat you Putin will eat question that's what I wanted to ask you about was um there were some non- answers on both sides but one that was pretty glaring to me was when he was directly asked in the war between Ukraine and Russia do you want Ukraine to Prevail who do you want to win and he didn't answer it what did you interpret that to mean that means he did yeah like you know when you don't answer a question that's really direct that means you've answered it yeah right so what that means is he doesn't care if Ukraine wins or not and his plan is to let Russia take over Ukraine um well he says I want the war to end that means everything's going to get pulled back out and he leave the ukrainians to their own device so you know and and and look I would say this about about the vice president too if there is a second debate she she could do some things to help herself like look the American people are forgiving people and they're understanding people so there were some mistakes made in the B Administration she should admit to them and say she's going to do better so like the pull out in Afghanistan that was flubbed it was blown right the date he he gave the letter yeah but but but whoy I'm saying Joy what I'm saying is that she can you're all over here you're all over here but it it she can she can become more credible with people by saying look that was a mistake and I learned from it and I'm going to do better when I'm President we did shows leadership that's exactly right and and when they talk about her changing positions on certain issues the way I would hope she would address it would be to say you know what I will change some of my positions if that helps me bring the country together if it helps me bring people and and but make it about uniting the country Alissa right and saying you look I'm not going to get everything I want and so I will change I won't violate my principles but what I will do is change my position a bit if I think that that can help bring the country together I think that's what undecided voters want to hear is they want to stop the fighting and is this going to move the needle at all it will among those people it will going to vote for her now that you're you were an undecided voter I'm still an undecided voter oh shut up oh stop it I am up I understand I understand you all want me to make some big announcement but what I will say to you is Donald Trump is not who I'm voting for you take that to the so you're Ved for so American citizen Joy hold up our thanks to Chris Christie
