are the Mets the most clutched team in baseball I mean let's talk about the first win of the year the Tigers have a no hitter going late into the game Harrison Bader comes in breaks that bad boy up peton to lead off the ninth inning smack to solo Homer over the left center field wall and then what happens Tyrone Taylor laces a double to drive in the winning run JD Martinez walk-off home run versus the Marlins to really get that winning streak going there's no Grimace streak without that JD Martinez walk-off the two3 double play to end the game in London during the Grimace streak in Texas yeah they started making some noise in the seventh inning tied it in the eighth I believe it was the Alvarez double into the left center field Gap ninth inning what the hell is a polar bear doing in Arlington Texas it's hard to not bring up the Jesse Winker walk-off home run the Mets have proved that they're the most clutched team in baseball and right now winning these games that's a clutch team I got three words for all you Mets fans never Panic babes if you're turning the TV off during September baseball you're not Built For This okay Jonathan Baron is not here he's on the west coast he's on a work trip o la la I'm vetto kisi you can follow me on Twitter at VTO F kesi and that is not John that is Hunter tabs of the Mets social media Fame would you say Fame I guess you could say Fame I a wild thing to say I'd like it to be Fame how's about that okay well Hunter Hunter helps run the social media here at the New York Mets as part of a really great team there's a bunch of people there and um Hunter is one of my favorite people on the team because uh we both are incredibly to online so if you're a Mets fan and you're seeing some rizzler references or AJ and big Justice boom um this is this is one of the reasons that you can uh you can accredit that to but hunter like myself like a lot of people here you also grew up a gigantic Mets fan right big time Big Time um and that game any other season any other team would you say that team loses the game nine times out of 10 right yeah I mean just in my lifetime that I could remember I'm thinking all right maybe 22 gets a shot maybe 2015 gets a shot but you know we were going into the ninth inning I was like you know what we got top of the order obviously Francis was shoving yeah all credit to him but we got pitcher the month for August uh did the same thing I think two weeks ago took no hitter into the ninth but you know what arms getting a little tired and top of the order up no one else and the MVP comes up you know we're going to get to that later we're going to go through all the top moments but just an incredible game and one thing to note I heard this on the SNY broadcast after um the Mets are n and three this year in rubber games which is the uh the most in baseball this year just shows you that there's something incredibly clutch and you know by reading this title you can tell that theme is going to come up later in this episode the Mets win games when they really need to win games I mean think there's two different worlds right now there's a world where the Mets lose that game they get no hit even if they don't get no no hit the Mets just lose that game set and we're feeling down and out we're feeling in the dumps instead the Mets win that game we're going into Philly feeling strong we have an off day tomorrow things are feeling really good right now and I want to go into some of the Mets math okay we've been doing the Mets math all year this year and up until this point we've been saying 87 wins 87 wins Atlanta's been playing up the Mets have been playing up so I think we're going to change that number now to 89 wins it seems like 89 wins should be what gets the job done yeah at this time at the moment of this recording you're listening to this episode the Mets have won 80 games so that means over the course of the rest of the season we need the Mets to go 9 and seven that's their best chance to get into the playoffs with that nine and seven number how do you feel about that it's doable it's doable they have a this is probably their hardest stretch of the season and let's say let's say something there's a lot of hard games coming up there's specifically what there's 10 hard games coming up seven against the Phillies three against the Braves you also have the Brewers at the end of the year which is that's no easy cookie by any means but when you think about that nine number that I just said there's nine wins in there abely there's nine wins in there by by far it seems like and you know what you're gonna have to beat Philly and Atlanta anyways yeah why not do it now you know I I feel confident with how the team's playing that they can go in there and make some noise and you know really put a hard fight in a really tough series make it hard on Philly make it hard on Atlanta um you know and just they're gonna like I said they're gonna have to beat them anyways so why not why not go do it now why not you know solidify yourself truly that much more into the wild card picture and pick up a couple Series wins here and reverse some fortunes of the last few years and this is a theme I've said on other episodes of the podcast I've said I think the path to the Mets having this magical season is they reverse some of these downfalls they've had right and that Atlanta series that's such an important series for so many reasons one for the mentality of the players two for the obviously the standings sure you got to go into Atlanta you got to perform because like you said if you don't beat Atlanta like what where who else are you going to beat you know like you need to beat these good teams so Philly this weekend in Philly and then they come to our house next weekend which is just a prime time Central game where every game has just pretty much been flexed into the spotlight I think Thursday Friday and Sunday yeah so th uh Thursday's National Friday's Apple Sunday's ESPN Sunday Night Baseball um and it's just you know hold on to your butts like this is this is it this is what we've been waiting for when David Sterns said in the beginning of the year this is a team that will compete in September he meant it and we're here and Mets fan should be happy because we've said this before back in May if you could choose being down and out and feeling as bad as you were after those losses or sitting on the edge of your seat watching the Mets play the Blue Jays I would take this every single time every single year every single moment um but yeah man so it's it's just a special team and uh I've been having a lot of fun this year and some some great performances and it's a great time to talk about that top five moments in Mets Blue Jays number five we're going to go with game one it was that eighth inning comeback that the Mets had Mets had just given up a run Mets fans start to panic you're wondering oh my God is this going to be it we're down now after a pretty low-scoring game like not really much offense showing what do the Mets do they come out they get men on base and they take advantage of some poor Toronto Blue Jays defense which is ironically enough what we saw them do to lose to the Braves the day before so we kind of like one back that loss from them in what they did to the Braves or with the Braves say good teams find ways to win they found a way to win Monday night obviously wasn't the prettiest of games no no but but you need to take advantage of what's given to you Toronto's Bullpen sort of crumbled in that eighth inning you need to take advantage of that and that's exactly what they did and then they shut it down going forward but good teams find ways to win games they put pressure on on their opponents and that's exactly what they did in that eighth inning all right number four Tyler McGill looking like an absolute stud in game one stud one hit in six Innings of work nine strikeouts and he did that on a six different pitch mix I didn't know that part that's impressive yeah dude Tyler Mill I mean he threw 88 pitches six different kinds of pitches and um that's just this is the Tyler Mill we see every now and then we see Tyler M and I said this to John actually um before his game against the white socks where I was like you know it's weird I feel like Tyler Mill has a lot of these bounceback games where he comes up from the minor leagues and just absolutely shoves he does exactly what he does in Triple A exactly and you know last week he had a he had a he had a rougher go he got like you know Carlos mza pulled the breaks a little early on him we switched him out today not today the other day Tyler McGill just looked absolutely Unstoppable he looked filthy and Mets fans were you know were nervous at first because Paul Blackburn got taken out of the lineup that day he's having some lower back stiffness I believe Tyler Mill shows up against a good team there's a good lineup in Toronto young Dynamic the their young players are playing very well Vlad Vlad Jr is having a phenomenal year I mean like there was there was talk on the broadcast of are they going to pitch to him like they did Aaron judge in the subway series and Tyler McGill went right after Vlad yeah it was he pitched like Vito said very well as much as you could hope for in a guy who wasn't projected to start that's all you could ever ask for more you know he gave the Mets everything they could possibly asked for and just gave them the best chance to win yeah and uh you know it's something to think of because say Paul Blackburn does come back soon Tyler Mill is you either have a six starter or maybe you have a guy who's just shoving out of the bullpen why not either of those work you know keep the arms a little fresh hopefully for a later October run give the guys a give the starters you know an extra day here and there the more weapons the better baby yeah all right number three moment Ryan stanic strikes out the side in game one to keep the Met in it in the eighth inning um that's just it was re like Ryan stanik had a rough start to his Mets career but has bounced back so well has looked so great and that game was just a perfect example of how beneficial it is to have a guy like that would you say that was a clutch outing I would say that was a clutch outing anyways Ryan stanik that was such a shutdown inning after the Mets Take the Lead that is something that is so important yes throughout the season but especially in sep M you take the lead late you put up a zero in that next half inning that is so important for you what I just realized I feel like hey if you're watching this this isn't a kid Caster Hunter Hunter Hunter works here come on man I feel like I'm doing I'm like a year and a half out of college that's crazy I know but like you like you kind of have kid Caster energy like the way you said anyways like you know what I mean my bad no not your bad I'm just say you know I'm excited the match just took a series or go I'm going to hey what was it like to put the polo on and go sit with Gary Keith and Ron kid caster he had a full suit he everyone loved him this year I I know that kid was great I actually and then I listened to the fan the day after and his dad called in apparently he called in and asked for advice on what he should wear I miss that that's awesome yeah and then you know and then I have my own kid Caster here on man that's no Hunter's a good kid Hunter's a good kid you know what I mean all right but that shutdown inning from Ryan Sonic it is so important when you take the lead to throw up a zero especially late in the game it just again it's another separator from good teams to Great teams from great teams to amazing teams so important you know that they talked about this on the broadcast but uh Ryan stanic apparently was talking about how like he also was having back problems I think earlier in the year and he started working on his release point because he was like throwing over his body almost and that he realized that he was like kind of overcompensating so he just like focused on fixing that there's been some pretty cool things like sha manah we found out pregame today this is wild that Jeremy Hefner started having him warm up from throwing from one mountain to the from the mound to the other plate from the in the bullpen right mound to left plate PL which is wild I've I've never seen anything like that no but I mean I don't think anyone has it's working clearly it's going to be one of those things that everybody starts doing now you're going to just start seeing everybody throw to the maybe yeah that's a wild Trend to set but number two moment also we're moving on now that was all from game one we're moving on to game three cuz Francisco Alvarez's three-run home run in the top of the ninth to really cement that Mets lead anytime you could you know put a team away that much more again taking the lead is one thing putting them away in that same inning is that much more important obviously you know Diaz had to come in through one pitch you know it's just so important to get the lead yes extending it giving the Blue Jays essentially no real hope it just that much more of an inst mountable comeback is just again it's another sign of a really really good team and Alvarez really really good to see him you know take a home or straight straight away Center yeah it's always good to see a guy get Barrel on ball go straight away dead center and also Alvi had a really good series went three for 10 got some hits was getting on base so you just want to see your young catcher really start to heat up because look every team has dips right it's all about when you get hot if this was our dip and this is our rise I feel great the best time to get hot is tomorrow the best time to get H hot is against Philly yeah absolutely Francisco Andor says it all the time just trying to ride that wave as as long as possible right and you bring up Francisco Lor which leads us number one moment of Mets Blue Jays without a doubt without a doubt Bowden Francis taking a no hitter into the ninth he runs into a wall that is Francisco Lindor Francisco Lindor not only breaks up the no hitter but ties the game with a one rum Kumi would you say that was a valuable play if you follow Mets on Twitter now you know where that came from um I mean is he not the absolute man for this team he look there this is what everybody has said about Francisco Lindor in the MVP debate you take Francisco Lindor off this team you're you're probably not in this wild card race whatsoever no you've probably sold a lot of guys off at the deadline this is a whole different team Francisco Lindor is a leader Francisco Lindor is an excellent defenseman Francisco Lindor is an elite man at the plate and he plays the hardest position in the infield Short Stop he is he's everything you could want and he plays every day every single day every day he has not missed a game the only game he didn't start you know what he did he walked it off he walked it off he came off he had a flu he came in he won the game so Francisco Lindor is just having an unbelievable year and he had a slow week yeah and he'll be the first one to tell you that yeah and but who cares about a slow week if at the end of it you come out you win a game that seemed like it was doomsday device yeah it was s such an impact moment 02 count on a guy hadn't struck anyone out really all day I think he only had one strike only one strike out going into the ninth he got fooled badly on a on a breaking ball on the 01 pitch you know what he gets a bit of a mistake from Francis right pitch was supposed to be up didn't get it up enough and Lindor smacked it over the right field wall as we've seen him come up clutch so many times this season he's he's the leader of this team he does everything he could possibly want and it's just well I hope that we will look back on this moment one of the many moments that you know we'll have this season and just like that's when things started to turn again that's when things started to really take off obviously we've had a couple of them in the season but just they were saying it on the SNY post game like we'll see this one on Mets classic in a couple years oh yeah I think dude I think that all the time every time there's a game that the Mets have like an exciting win I'm always like I'm going to be watching this game on mute at a gym or I was going to say at I'll see this in a rain delay I'll see this in the middle of the night when I wake up and this game will just be on I'm like you know what I was sitting with veto and will watching this game it's like you know it's going to be a tough loss not great going into Philly with this but you know what things change things change in the with the crack of the pet literally and it begs us to ask the question of the day we ask a question every week on this podcast and today's question is are the Mets the most clutched team in b baseball now off the bat how do you quantify clutch you can in win probability added I guess that's like probably the best way to quantify clutch we don't have too many win probability added stats but how are we going to do it today is my question straight up Vibes straight up Vibes and we're going to talk about some gigantic moments this year I mean let's talk about the first win of the year which is similar to today tiers have a no hitter going late into the game Harrison Bader comes in breaks that bad boy up and then what happens Tyrone Taylor laces a double to drive in the winning run pet Lonzo to lead off the ninth inning smack to solo Homer over the left center field wall over Mar hanah's head old friend of the show old friend of ours um and then Tyrone Taylor comes up first one of the season I mean isn't that just sort of the first sort of hint as what you were going to get right yeah we've seen this team be dramatic from their first win of the Season we saw it towards the end of April too in that Cubs and Cardinals home stand end of April early may we saw um the marent his flash in the pen his walk-off Homer oh against the cardal against the Cardinals yeah which is funny you know who came up with the big hit in that game too right before that who Harrison Bader oh yeah you know we talked about this on the show big hit Bader big hit Bader comes up in big moments and you know what he almost had one today he did that was what a cat What A Catch You got it like ball is ball that b is ball you can't lie I mean I screamed in the middle of our employee Hub just was that it was just so tough to watch because when that ball was off the bat I was like here goes Harrison Bader breaking up another no hitter um and then I thought that was the catch in a no hitter yeah right no yeah that's well like that happens and then you're like and like they were the Blue Jays are making such outrageous plays that you were like this is like it kind of felt like the writing was on the wall it felt like oh this is like they're hot right now like they're feeling themselves like they know what's on the line but let's about the clutchs let's talk about the you know what I want to bring up I want to bring up game two of the G Grimace streak JD Martinez walk-off home run versus the Marlins now I don't think there's like we're going to bring up a lot of walk-offs because the Mets have some of the they're like top three in walk-offs in baseball believe we have the most walk-off home runs oh we have the most walk-off home runs now I don't don't stat check me on that but there's nothing like literally how do you get more clutch than a walk-off there's there's no way to be more clutch than that that's like you need to show up you need to you need to win um but JD Martinez walk-off home run versus the Marlins to really get that winning streak going there's no Grimace streak without that JD Martinez walkoff because they were down 2-1 um Lindor was hit by a pitch I believe to lead off the inning stole second got himself into position to Ty game JD Martinez didn't need to hit a single he smacked it over the right center field wall again just like you said started really started the gemistry it was a big Series win over Miami and it was also big because Edwin Diaz that was his first game back and Edwin came out kept the Mets in it and then I remember everybody noticed that Lindor walked up to Lindor like went up to Edwin right after gave him like a big like let's go pump up and then you could tell and we talked to Carlos Mendoza about this that the boys got into the Dugout and they were like we got to go out there we got to win this one for Edwin yeah yeah that was the first game I had attended this season as a fan that I wasn't working it's always fun to attend as a fan every now and then I've done it three or four times a season good to refresh you know I want to bring up a not a a clutch home run not a hit I want to bring up uh a defensive moment that was the London game dude that was the never happened before in history one of my favorite plays I'll ever seen the two three double play to end the game in London I mean like that's like you got to that is clutch and Luis teren was here for a week he played maybe five games for the metch at that time obviously they just picked him up from the Yankees we know how he throws out base runners at a crazy high clip throwing out L Dale Cruz uh last weekend that was sort of like our intro to him I guess you could say our his first big moment his first big defensive moment putting the body on the L for a guy for guys who he met a week ago uh you know picking up the Tapper right in front of the plate stepping on home firing or strike to Pete at first was SI sick sick just you can't you can't quantify play like that no and Luis Tor has had some incredible moments this year I mean like his arm has just been Unstoppable it seems like throwing guys out at second throwing guys out at first it just changes everything and like other clutch moments I'm thinking about right now I'm thinking about David Peterson against the Yankees like that's a clutch moment loading the bases during during the Grimace streak in Texas yeah you know they were down believe 51 61 they started making some noise in the seventh inning started making and then tied it in the eighth I believe it was the Alvarez double into the left centeri ski Gap ninth inning what the hell is a polar bear doing in Arlington Texas he's driving in the game-winning run on the top of the ninth inning with the that was a Janie's tweet that was Jan's tweet that was Jan's tweet yeah yeah but shout out Janie shout out Janie you know hope we swept her Red Sox don't you can't do you can't stuff like that I don't think you can do stuff like that all right are you gonna cut that out nmo Mother's Day home run three2 count left on left pink bats sick lights going all crazy I mean it I think that was our first walk-off Homer of the Season no ventos yeah ventos was April dude what are you talking about we just talked about it a second ago we talk about the ventos it's crazy like the the Vientos walk-off home run against the Cardinals six years ago but also like we talk about it so much on this podcast I feel like bad like I feel like people are probably like all right we've heard you talk about the Vientos walkoff but like that was like it was awesome that was the early start because that was the beginning of the first streak they had really yeah that was the first time where we oh excuse me not the beginning of a winning streak I mean like they were hot at the end of April y they were really hot at the end of April then May we know what happened to may may was you know may happened May was a thing that happened May was a month of the year yeah as the rest of the months are what do we got next uh I mean it's hard to not bring up the Jesse Winker walk-off home run yeah I mean a I mean since the beginning of August this team at home the Jesse Winker the Alvarez the otheros so our point is this when you have a team that is able to come through and win games at this clip at this to be able to come back I mean you know what else is clutch being able to come back from 11 games under to over 11 games over that's also clutch you love that you were so excited that day because I know you were talking about was like the story of being 11 under end of May to being 11 over mid August I think they yeah I mean dude baseball is baseball is story lines baseball is storytelling baseball is Cinematic and there's just something beautiful about that 11 games under to 11 games over there's something beautiful about this team is in a wild card race right now this team at this moment of this recording uh we are tied with the Braves this is a big weekend because it we go to Philly Braves got a tough weekend too the Braves and Mets have the two toughest team the two best teams in the National League and what the Mets need to do is they need to show up against the Phillies and I think they will because the Mets have proved that they're the most clutch team in baseball and right now winning these games that's a clutch team and they've we've known they've shown up in that ballpark before and had some crazy moments in 2015 in 2022 and even when the team you know wasn't at their best they still showed up in that ballar Park 2022 I mean look 2015 the David Wright comeback game was special and I'll never forget I I uh I was at I was at my old job I was at my like summer I was at my summer cam job I was working at Chelsea Piers and I stayed late to go to the gym and play basketball and when we finished playing the game was on and I was watching the TV like in like the the area by the batting cages and when the Mets went down I just was like I I get superstitious sometimes and I'll be like okay I'm not going to watch the game anymore I'm going to watch on game day I went up to an office I started watching on game day and then I didn't leave the room by myself I was in the dark I did not leave this dark room watching on game day yeah until the game was over it's I love the superstitions oh dude I get I'm I'm such a I do dishes when the Mets are losing cuz I believe it's good karma whatever I like that whatever works for you I personally don't have one I'm a big stay in your spot guy I I'll give you another one I do if the Mets are losing and I put my phone down and then they start winning I will not pick it back up which you know because like we'll be texting during some games and then you and he'll go silent on me for the next two hours and that's okay honestly I don't need you texting me all the time dude Mets group chats are fun I'm in like so many Mets group chats and I enjoy it um but Mets Phillies this weekend huge series we're starting off with uh Aron Nola versus Jose canana Jose canana looked great last few starts he has he's really uh we know he had that skid in the middle of the Season that San Diego start was excellent his last start was also very good we know he can come out we know he can handle that Philadelphia Phillies lineup yeah and just you know really set the Mets on a right path to start the series Friday night it's crazy that we've barely played the Phillies this year I know well we had the we the London game we had this four and the two twos two two and that's it right I think that was it the London game and the two twos yeah nuts and now we play them seven times the final month of the Season you mean seven times in September seven seven seven Seven's an interesting number and that's another storyline it used to be a bad number what if we could turn that into a good number this year listen man I'm going to Philly this weekend for the series I'm pumped if you see Hunter in Philly say hi say hi um I try to be friendly um we know once the Mets started playing their real best baseball the season starting at the end of May they split their only two games with the Phillies since then yeah we we know this team can compete with anyone in baseball you know go do it against the best team in the league go do it in their house you know that stadium is gonna be rocking you know a lot of Mets fans are going to be there they always travel well to Philly it's two hours down the road from the ballpark you know be there be loud if you if you can be there we know it's going to be an awesome environment we know it's just going to be you know a real great opportunity for the Mets to go in do some damage against like we said the top team in the National League and then after that they got to come we the Mets come home Monday they play the Nationals which Nationals are no pushover guys no we've seen the Mets have tough games against the Nationals in September before you got to show up you got to show up and support the Mets because those games against the Nationals are going to be gigantic and then those four games against the Phillies are going to be the biggest home games of the regular season and the Washington serieses are all night games yeah kids if you're listening you could go to you can go to school the next day a little tired I've done it it's okay you're going to regret if you don't go to the ballpark this week you're going to regret that you didn't go in December because I always do I always in December regret the games I didn't go to in November I regret the games I didn't go to so Mets fans get to the ballpark this week mets.com tickets uh also season tickets for next year are available now so get those memberships get in to the ballpark next year um
