Talking Browns-Ravens, potential coaching changes & more - Sports4CLE 12/16/22

[Music] [Applause] Good Friday afternoon to you four o'clock time for sports for Cle hope your weekend is off to a great start to Browns players with the day off getting ready for a Saturday afternoon game tomorrow at four they will host the Baltimore Ravens some news out of Berea today though the Browns have elevated wide receiver dalen Baldwin and linebacker Tay Davis from the practice squad to the active roster wide receiver David Bell likely out with a foot issue so in in addition to uh Baldwin you have Jalen Darden one of those two likely to get a lot of playing time as the third wide receiver now that it is unlikely that David Bell can go let's welcome in Casey Kinnaman from dog pound daily and Casey linebacker is an area that's kind of interesting because everybody is banged up Ravens like to run the football that's going to be a key and um you're going to need somebody other than Cooper or or dpj because three wide receivers seems to be the way this is going too yeah with linebackers they just need bodies um I think Jordan cunastic you know you bring Tay Davis up Tony Phil's getting expanded role you know but on the offensive side of the ball for the receivers you know I hope Michael Woods gets some run I mean we're here we're at this point in this season now that Bell's not going to be there I think those reps should go to woods they kind of need to know what they have in them to see if you know he's going to be a part of this team going forward and I want to see what they're going to do with Darden I want to see what their plan is uh you bring a guy like that in you could have him return kicks you could have them do the jet motion stuff as tapansky likes to do so it'll be interesting to see how they Implement that yeah I agree um there is a lot you can do with him and and he may take on the Anthony Schwartz role and and he would provide some serious competition uh for Anthony Schwartz As you move forward um this is um a little concerning so since week eight worst defense in the NFL success rate allowed on the ground on first downs the Cleveland Browns the worst defense in the NFL success rate allowed through the air on first down Cleveland Browns I I guess the the good news is there isn't anything else there's nothing special teams related uh for first down it's dealer's choice for opposing offenses what do you want to do how about it you know the world is your voice Fair um when you see stuff like that it's just it goes to show you what we've been dealing with on Sundays for this whole season you know the defense has not been up to Snuff um you go into certain weeks thinking okay well this team really doesn't run the ball either get for the pass and then that team just runs for 200 yards on you you know it's you know look at the Dolphins game they haven't ran the ball since you know and I also that would still be running right now though you know it's it's crazy it's um they'd have nothing they can hang their hat on right and as a defense you have to have that you have to have you know this is what we do you know and what what do they do I don't know I'm still waiting to find out well when you heard it explained it was multiple which to me you're saying we don't do anything really well so we do everything that's when you say we're multiple I I really don't want to hear that that that to me means we haven't figured out what we do well yeah they haven't uh well we thought we thought we knew what they were going to do are going to be a pass rushing team who could lock down people with defensive backs but you know outside of Miles Garrett an occasional appearance from Clowney the pass rush really hasn't been there you know it's just one one player is not enough and then defensive back wise like Martin Emerson's played well you know and the other guys just haven't lived up to their billing they don't they we thought they what we knew what they were going to do but even that's been a disaster yeah I I would agree and then and then we get to the defensive back coach Jeff Howard talking about how the Browns defended Jamar Chase listen to this I mean it's uh I think you know going into it what you see is they have three three good receiving threats and uh all three of them were up for the game and just the way that the way that the NFL is like if if guys are up active you know that soon that's an important you're expecting them to play and um so we were planning for all three of them to play and then you know after one series two of them tap out and the game changes and so you had yeah it stresses your adaptability and uh you really gotta you know feel the game out what what is it going to be and you know I know Jamar had 15 targets I thought we did pretty well on them I think um you know Denzel won his fair share of them um I think some of them they caught us you know and some of the catches that he had I think caught uson like run calls um where we're and that's a big part of it because you can't just say we're gonna defend Jamar Chase and not respect Joe Mixon in the Run game so you know there's stressed there um I thought we did pretty well there's some there's some plays that we left out on the field particularly with him we could probably be more aware of when they are in a situation like that when they have one receiver if you target a guy 15 times you should probably think about after about four or five you should probably try to take them away and every NFL team maybe other than than this one would sign on for taking away your number two and three widers I those are the problems defensive coordinators should want all day long yeah I don't know if Jeff Howard knew he was snitched on himself and his fellow defensive coaches when he was speaking up there but so you mean to tell me you had a plan in place to take on Jamar Chase Tyler Boyd and T Higgins but when they lost two of those you didn't know how to adapt you didn't know how to react you know that that's professional malpractice at this point man you can't in the NFL you you knew Jamar Chase was on your schedule you got lucky the first time you didn't have to play against them but you knew you wanted to go up against them you had to have a plan and at face value I get okay we're going to have Denzel go one-on-one with Jamar Chase but they're watching the same games we're watching you know Denzel's not playing well you know so like there was not in any defensive meetings you didn't like hey if Denzel struggles we're gonna pivot and do this no no we're not gonna we're not going bracket and we're not gonna you know press them and then have someone Play Over the Top none of that we're just going to keep doing the same thing over and over again well he thought they defended Jamar Chase well yeah that's telling 15 targets at some point in time put the rookie that likes to beat on wide receivers on him Martin Emerson's really physical guys that are fast and and lean like that they don't like guys that want to beat on them when they're running to change it up there's a concept anything any Plan B would have been acceptable any when you get to the first drive of the second quarter and you realize those guys still aren't coming back on the field change your plan your plan's not working you know what I mean you abort abort if it's just it's I couldn't have less faith in this defensive coaching staff it's it we're to the point now this just like I said it's malpractice they're an attitude it's it's ridiculous and how's forget like at halftime there wasn't a conversation like what are we doing you know spansky didn't get in Joe Woods here like so uh the plan how do we what are we doing are we gonna switch something up nothing just gonna roll like that the entire game and you get what you get let's not let one beat us how about that one um all right we digress uh miles Garrett just talked about kind of the overall feeling and reaction uh to the season this was from yesterday I mean personally sure each person can say they know how to individually a great season depending on how you did but as a team no you fall short of the playoffs and you don't you don't achieve what you you set out to do it's a failure I mean you can learn from it I'm sure you can take something away but if it's Successful Failure and that's only two options we would have failed ourselves and Casey I've heard fans and some media people say well you know he's aside from the team he's he's disengaged I kind of take it the other way he he's sitting there going we should be better than this he's doing what fans are doing how many times you have to learn the same lesson you know like if you're going to take something from this he's found himself on the outside looking in now five to six years in the league um it's got to be super disheartening and you know we're into his prime years right now and they're they're being wasted you know so like I said I don't wanna you know you know me I don't get on here and talk about just firing people but there needs to be major changes this off season and uh defensively especially in that coaching staff they need to take a good look in the mirror and figure out if there's any of these coaches they want to bring back maybe talk to Miles and see how close he is with Chris kiffin and uh see if they want to keep him at outside of that I think you clean house you got to get different voice and a different approach because what they're doing is just not working yeah a whole different scheme is uh is kind of what I think so so that this defense has an identity I don't think it has one I'm with you all right this from an article you wrote three areas the Browns must improved vastly before uh facing the Ravens that game is tomorrow Saturday number three um area of concern keep the yellow laundry off the field yeah there's a boatload of penalties uh number two third down efficiency and number one jump start the Run game and and that goes back to kind of the identity of this offense has been the Run game and it's it has not been what it's been the last few games last several games basically since the bye week since they came back from the buy they haven't been able to get any consistent running and it isn't even to me it isn't about total touches or make sure Chubb touches it this may time just about efficiency too many times they find themselves in second and eight even second and eleven you know and it's just not they're not efficient and there is a myriad of problems and you could point a lot to the center and he's not doing well he didn't play well he got he got beat up pretty bad on on a Sunday but it's more than that you know white teller is not himself Jack Compton's not himself chubb's vision isn't what it was earlier in the year he's not trusting Rush Lanes he's not finding the backside of stuff like it's it's always it's that is what they are they're they're a run first team they're built that way but they can't play that way right now you know and it is disheartening and they need to they need to get a spark in that run game and I want to see more passing over these last four games but they need to be efficient when they run so they don't put themselves in so many predictable situations on Third and long and stuff which leads into the third Downs they haven't been good on third down they just haven't been over these last few weeks and a lot of that is because they're they're predictable they're facing third nine third and eight and the other team knows what you're going to do and I don't care what you got going on when they know what you what you have to do you become easy to defend Casey Kinnaman from dog pound daily and I'm going to step aside take a quick time out other side of the break talk a little bit about DeSean Watson some of the things going on with him what we see and a little bit more about the Ravens game sports for sale maybe thank you [Music] we continue talking browns with Casey Kinnaman from dog pound daily Kurt Warner on what he has seen from DeSean Watson uh in his first two games with the Browns shaky is I think we all expected it to I mean I think we would have been more amazed had he come out and not shown any signs of rust the first game was a real struggle um didn't look like his feet were Underneath Him looked like the game was going fast you know skipping a lot of balls into his receivers just just things that you know you you expect when you get back out there the first time I mean even if you play the game sometimes the game can speed up for you on different Sundays and you got to work to slow that down and it just looked like it was going real fast for him last week was better you know he was he was more settled in um you know still not the DeSean Watson that we we saw in Houston and not the big playmaker he looks like a guy that right now is more comfortable trying to get out of the pocket and not that he hasn't always been that way but I think it lends itself to time off let me just kind of run around and be an athlete because you know that's some place that I'm always comfortable and he's still getting accustomed to uh you know to what they're doing in the drop back game and it you know it lends itself to an interesting question that he played a lot in Houston you know in shotgun and we know that Cleveland is built off of the Run game and again the power Run game extra tight ends Nick Chubb downhill as opposed to as much in the shotgun and so that's an interesting dynamic to you know to pay attention to that we're going to be paying attention to on Saturday is um you know you're trying to build an offense around your quarterback but at the same time you've got an offense that's built around Nick Chubb and running the football and trying to mesh those two things and balance those two things and Casey that's a that's a really good point and and that's going to take more time than than we initially thought it would to figure out that's why and I've I've caught some heat from it after watching them it's going to take till next year until we figure out exactly what this offense looks like because you have a quarterback with a different skill set than the offense that you have run calls for yeah it's going to evolve over time and even over the course of next season it'll evolve from the beginning to the end it's good to see that Kirk's saying exactly what we're seeing though with uh with how Watson played the first week to the second week and the stuff that he can do well in I think they need to lean into it I think they need to lean into the fact that let's move the puck a little bit let's get him outside the pocket so he has options to be an athlete at times you know or to see what he's seeing on the field as far as receivers breaking open and the timing of everything um but I think they can they can do stuff out of the gun and still be a running team you know I think they can do do a lot of Run Gun stuff I would like to see more implementation of the pistol which is you know kind of a hybrid in between shotgun under Center I think they need to kind of get that in there and just get different looks you know and it's all about you know him getting his feet under him and him getting used to the speed of things and you know and we saw a it wasn't a large step forward in the second game but there was definitely a step forward there was the game slowed down a little bit for him he was starting to see things open and we didn't see any more of him skipping balls in the receivers you know so it's coming along but it is slow and uh you know as fans we want to now you know we want instant gratification and it's probably going to like you said take until next year before we get that yeah I naively thought it would be you know more so this year but it doesn't look like that's gonna happen and and the other thing is I want to see this offense allow him to put pressure on a defense that's that's kind of that's been missing the pressure from the defense has been missing this team seems very reactive and that's the one thing I don't like about it they don't dictate they oh well we can do this it's like they have enough talent to go out and dictate go out and dictate yeah it's frustrating a motion to be passive you know go out there and you affect things only things affect you and you have to react to them um is that kind of the personality of our coach maybe you know like bleeding into the team it's there's a lot of things they have to evaluate over the course this off season and that's one of them for sure is you have enough skill and you have enough players in certain positions that you should be out there being aggressive with those and they do seem passive yeah all right this is what to watch for from espn.com from every game for the Browns Ravens game Wilder Sean Watson take another step forward what's most important for Brown's weather Kevin stefanski and figure out how to properly deploy Watson within this offense partnership was extremely awkward in Watson's first game only slightly better in the second uh Watson doing more work by extending the place with his feet uh then stefansky is providing fantastic calls um and again he's got to figure out what DeSean does relative to his offense and it's it is going to be evolving unfortunately yeah I think it's more of figuring out what this offense is going to be not how he fits in this offense because this isn't the offense that it's going to be going forward and no one really talks about it like as much as it is about DeSean getting the rest and getting the speed of the game playing behind this line and and getting chemistry with receivers this is also about fancy learning how to call plays for DeSean Watson you know this isn't Kirk Cousins this isn't Baker Mayfield assistant Jacoby percent you didn't pay 230 million dollars to go out there and just watch I got hand off you know 40 times a game this is going to be a growth process for stepanski too he's going to have to get outside of his comfort zone because he's never had a quarterback with his skill set you know so he's got to like learn how to punch things up and dial things up so that you know you're getting the most out of that quarterback those are good problems to have because there's there's a lot more to your quarterback now uh but you're right I you know he has had very um efficient but limited athletic limited athletically uh quarterbacks with a be it armor or or athleticism um let's take a look at this espn's.com again every starting quarterback's weakness and for Sean Watson they say third Downs 2020 Houston ranked 16th on third and fourth Downs in the two games with the Browns he's struggling on third down so drank next class if he had enough passes to qualify Browns were 14-4 of 15 on third Downs against Cincinnati four of 13 on third Downs against Houston um foreign you can look at the stuff with Houston you didn't have a very good surrounding cast and as we've already said Kevin Smith is trying to figure out how to call place for him so so I mean is it concerning yeah would I say it's a weakness not just yet I want to see more sample size is too small right now I mean like we spoke on earlier these are third and nines you know these aren't yeah this isn't getting I have the sticks this isn't third and three and you can be unpredictable and you could do different things this is the other team knows what you're going to do and you just become easier to defend in that that way and I think if you extrapolated this over the course of his career I don't think that's indicative of who Deshawn is as a player I've seen him pick up plenty of third and Longs um but it's just going to take time and unfortunately you're asking a fan base who's been waiting for how long to just wait a little longer just wait a little longer you'll see we'll see what we got for you that's I get you know people running out of patience and I can't be mad at him for it yeah the uh the whole wait till next year uh thing is is uh it's been generational here all right um time for us to head to the voicemail of Truth and reason eight days right from Cleveland you answered one of my calls about utilizing the Talent Mr Giggles over there Quincy carrier oh Donovan people Jones almost got the Thousand there I ain't talking about the receivers I'm talking about the running back the fanski needs to go back and look at biner and Matt but you got the same two guys there basically so I haven't seen them utilize that talent in the back though so thanks for taking my call on self Quincy I love him but I disagree with them all right later Dave as always appreciate all the voicemails yeah you know for whatever reason they don't want to use them in tandem the NFL has kind of evolved away from from what it was back in the 80s with back uh byner and Mack but I there is a way you can use Nick Chubb and Kareem hunt together that will be absolutely a nightmare for a defense because people aren't doing it I mean if you if you were going to say strictly because it's a different game the Ravens offense is completely different and and they've been pretty effective yeah the one thing I I think back to is stress like you've stress a defense out by having those two players on the field at the same time and for whatever reason they would do it in short little Spurs and then they go games without doing it and I right now can't take the last time I've seen those two on the field at the same time it's uh it's puzzling and they've squandered this opportunity because there's virtually no way Hunt's going to be here next year so any opportunity they had to do it it's already it's gone and there's no point in getting into it right now these last four games to get something going and get some some juice with it when it's not going to be there in the future so these last four games are all about building now um and their opportunity to build that that kind of dynamic with both those on the field I think that's come and gone yeah I I would agree it's I would look at it as a missed opportunity because again um when you do something that nobody else can replicate you create problems and that's that's Lamar Jackson That's Tyler Huntley that's the Ravens offense um but all right I digress all right time to look more towards the Ravens Browns game four o'clock kickoff tomorrow um NFL Network predictions on this game and it's it's kind of interesting so um they have four of the ten predict a Browns Victory um and you see most of them think it's gonna be a pretty close game oh in fact All American thinks it's a pretty close game I would not be surprised in the slightest to see the Browns win this it's going to come down to can that run defense show up um because the Ravens they've been able to throw the ball but doesn't matter who the quarterback is he's pretty quick pretty Elusive and they've been able to run the ball really effectively thank you come on you're you're playing the Dealer's Choice defense is whatever you want to do you know it's going to be on the table for you um but I tell you what four out of the ten you know picking the Browns and they're playing a backup quarterback but this also goes to show like the Browns history facing backup quarterbacks isn't all that great so I don't know I don't I definitely think it's on the table to be one you know the Ravens aren't World beaters right now um and they're facing a little bit of an issue offensively their defense brings it though and the additional Rogue one Smith and they already have Patrick Queen they're gonna be difficult to run against their physical cornerback and they'll get after you and you know in the the pass rush game so this is a very formidable defense coming to town and with their struggles and offense meeting the Browns defense I don't know we'll see how that goes that could be a wash but I expect a low scoring game somewhere in the low 20s should be close and uh hopefully the Browns can Edge them out you know something like 23 20. yeah and you know the the one thing that the reason I say um I think the Ravens might win this they won six of their last seven they find a way to win close games and and this year the Browns team has found a way to lose close games those things don't generally change late in the year now the browser I'm just losing they give them away um and the Ravens are used to taking Victory and especially you have to understand when Justin Tucker gets off the bus he's in a field goal range you know so if it comes down to it and they're anywhere near Midfield you know they're always going to have that shot so that's something you have to prepare for um but at some point the Browns have to become that team that goes out you know like in 2020 they won a ton of singles four games in 2021 it went the other way and this year it stayed going the other way like they have to get that back that's what it comes down to in the NFL most these games come down to three or four plays and the team that makes I mean he usually gets to walk off the field holding their head high with a W and and you know right now the Brows are the team that go to the locker room depressed because they didn't make those one or two plays that really could have swung a game so we'll see if they can you know make one or two plays this sun or Saturday actually and uh see if they can you know go in the off-season beating the Ravens Casey kinnamon great stuff as always appreciate the time and the Insight thanks very much Casey anytime thanks foreign [Applause] [Music] [Applause] we continue talking Browns here on Sports 4 CLE Brown's getting ready with a game tomorrow against the Ravens a Saturday afternoon game uh 4 30. um let's welcome in Lance Roslyn our film breakdown segment for the weekend Lance offensive line um let's go through that a little bit Joe batonio is the guy we're going to break down but um the line has had has had some concerning things going on with it yeah you've had you know watching the game last week you've had uh a lot of injury you've had a lot of inconsistency by some guys I think uh the Browns organization would play at a higher level uh I think they can they have some incredibly talented diet but doing an injury uh inconsistency what is the Run game moving forward now that Watson's the quarterback uh in terms of personnel and uh the multiple tight end sets and the counter game and those power doubles and more of a more of a Zone scheme than a gap scheme even though they run both uh they've been more of a gap scheme the last couple years so I'm interested to see um what they kind of what they're thinking moving forward in terms of how they're going to organize this offensive line um one guy who you know in talking to you and and passes the eye test as well Joe battonio is has been really really consistent yeah when you the thing I like about Joe petone is I'm looking through film is that he is the same guy Washington camp in terms of his effort his execution uh his attention to detail uh everything he does is just practices it well uh from their inside Zone front side Zone uh where he's the front side guy or you know he's the backside guy uh the counter game where he's a double team guy with the center or with the tackle or if there's a guy pulling out and around which is what everybody sees him consistently doing pulling out and around uh he's just really really good and he's not good on accident he practices really really well uh he's physical he's detailed and uh I'm not shocked it was uh looking at him his consistency is not shocking all right let's take a look at some of that um Camp video where they're working on fundamentals uh what do you see here and um what what is Joel working on in this but they're working a Zone concept here and he is uh they're gonna double team and it's kind of his own concept so that front side tackle is going to reach uh and then goal is going to take over and the only way you do that is have a really good feed if you watch this first couple steps he's gonna actually run he's actually going to run at the heels of that of that of that guy uh to his right um and he consistently does this well and this is why the Browns are really good in their Zone scheme uh this is working in odd front or I think yeah this is an even front uh no I'm sorry not front because that's the tackle and they're consistently working uh covered and uncovered uh his feet are really good his hands are really good uh and he takes over so the tackle starts to double and then goes to the next level and goal is going to take over and he throws this really really well and again working in tandem the timing important because uh you saw the tackle is going on to the the next man and Joel's picking up the man that that he had um another thing from the camp double teams um that's the next clip that we're going to take a look at and um take us through what they're working on here what you like what you see you're getting now you're getting a double team you're getting a true cap scheme uh double team where they're gonna be down uh once again goes really good with his hands he's really good with his feet uh you can see on contact how his feet are exaggerating the shorts uh choppy steps which allows him to keep his base underneath him so not only is he a big strong guy but he's low uh low man always wins he's got great leverage he's really really strong um I was kind of shock seeing in person how truly big he is he's a he's a really a dying man uh with really great feet so this is a good double team here uh just to drill they're working uh and it's a group that you constantly see carry over into the games well you had mentioned you know they run zone They Run Gap um another thing that the Browns do in that run game is what we're going to look at in this game action it's yet another version of it tell us what this is what you see here well this is going to be what the Browns um I have run very well uh throughout the last three or four years but I think it's a scheme that's going to be very important moving forward it's this pin and pull scheme uh which you can run out of multiple backs but you can also run an 11 personnel uh with multiple receivers in the game where they're gonna try to set the edge with either a tight end or receiver uh you've seen ajoku here they've done it with DP day and they're going to get the uncovered guys to that side out and around and to do that you got to have great feet you got to be able to uh get out and run you got to be able to locate the number one Packer inside the box or get to a corner which he does here with a pin block um and this is going to be a very important scheme for the Browns moving forward especially if they're going to be in multiple receiver groups that they seem to be in they're running a lot more 11 personnel so this is a classic pin and pull from the Browns and the other guy there you mentioned David and joku another guy that would set up to to get that block that and joke who got there with be dpj because of his size while he's not a tight end he's a big enough and physical enough guy that that he will be effective in that Realm of the game well yeah and if you're not going to have a fullback in the game you got to kind of be creative and how your term in terms of how you're going to block that uh the line of scrim into the edge and the linebackers uh at both najoku and bpj they give you that big body in there where they can seal down on an end of that thinning pool uh they could also get up to a linebacker if necessary uh in some of their Gap schemes uh the Zone scheme especially the one back Zone scheme they got to be able to block it like a lineman then climb to the next level where the linebacker is going to be and and have a good enough feet so yeah both of those guys and it gives you that on both are receiving threats so you can kind of run that pin and pool and some in some Gap schemes and some outside Zone schemes and still being a multiple receiver set um so obviously with DeSean Watson the past protection is going to become important because Browns are likely going to throw the ball more tell us what you see from Joel betonio here well the thing that the reason I have both of these clips I like them is one is going to be just a true drop back where we're just catching the ball in the gun and throwing the other one is play action and with play action uh with the Browns it was very very important because now those defensive lineman those linebackers are thinking run with the Browns moving forward they're going to be a pass first team I still think they're gonna have a power Run game but they're going to be a let's make no mistake about it they're going to be a pass for his team and teams are going to start pinning their ears back in pass rocks in a little bit uh betonia does a real good job he did a really good job in Camp I enjoyed watching him against the Eagles who have really good front during those two days uh pass blocking against that really good d-line but this is going to be different for the Browns moving forward there's not going to be as much play action as there will be just straight drawbacks so um all these guys are gonna have to really work this in the off season uh throughout the rest of these uh this month uh and get better uh daily well and again you mentioned it um it's it's going to be you don't pay a guy 230 million dollars black quarterback if you don't plan on using him quite a bit and making him the focal point um but take us through this video from Camp what are they working on and and why are these uh sets important well this will be a quick set so this will be uh some of the quick game the three-step game uh the uh when you get the ball out quick to the planks and the now screens and The Rock screen so uh what is you're doing here the reason he's so good is his feet so if you watch on uh pass protection here he's gonna set uh he's not actually gonna drop back which guards don't drop back as much but they're gonna drop Heel To Toe to kind of be able to handle twists and stunts this is just one-on-one with Winfrey uh Winfrey early on really struggled with these two cars especially betonio being a veteran uh does a great job of putting his hands inside he's low um he moves his feet on contact so if we can't swim him uh again he's really really good in both the pass and run and obviously with the Browns he's gonna have to get better and better at this true pass protection you know um Lance the one thing that's really sticks out about Joel buttonio and you mentioned it um the consistency and he placed through pretty much anything that he can he seems like he's always out there and he's consistently um one of the higher graded offensive linemen not only on the Browns but in the NFL yeah he's really but so you said he's consistent and he's available so those are two things in the NFL we've learned with the Browns um it's hard to play each week and when you see those guys I say this all the time you know I'm a football junkie and I like watching football but when you're down there seeing those guys in person day after day it's really hard to imagine those guys not getting hurt they're such big fast athletes and his he's always available he always plays at a high level um they ask him to do a lot of different things he's the point of attack he pulls uh he gets he's the lead on a bunch of their screens uh he's really good in pass Pro obviously he's the leader of the offensive line and part of his uh ability to be really good is his ability to practice and his ability to consistently be out there and get better at his at his at his craft so uh it's a credit to him uh he's rarely like you said he rarely has a bad grade uh he gets beat once in a while and that happens but it's never not knowing where he's supposed to be and what he's supposed to do uh he's a real pleasure to watch Lance Roslin is always great stuff appreciate the time and the Insight thanks Lance as always thanks and reason I think it's time for Joe wood to be fired sorry to be blunt to me he had too good of a defense to be playing this piss poor also are you guys confident that we're going to extend chubbs's uh contract I would love to I want to see more of his name is uh running the running back we got from Cincinnati drone Ford I want to see more of him because he pretty much know Kareem is leaving cochlin is leaving I could be wrong Cochran Cook's day I think uh cloudy is gone as well I just want to hear you guys thoughts bye go Bros as always appreciates all of uh the voicemails let's welcome in Randy gercy from dog pound daily um Randy they extended chub so he's got a couple of years left um as far as the other ones Conklin is the most likely um he wants to be here that's going to depend on uh can they get him at the price they want and yeah I this defense needs a complete change of voice and uh and mindset as well I think yeah and it doesn't make any sense to fire Joe Woods right now because even if you uh promote somebody behind them Nothing's Gonna Change so I mean you kind of play the season out see how it goes and then you look in the off season to see if there's somebody else out there that you think is going to do a better job um so yeah I feel like he's gonna go I do agree with the caller that I'd like to see a little more of Jerome forward down the stretch we know Kareem Hunt is probably going to cost a little too much to keep around and I'd like to see what Ford brings to the table so hopefully that we will see that during the last few games yeah I would agree and um it'll be interesting to see with Jerome Ford you saw him in preseason really different but you know you liked what you saw um take a look at this status from Jack Duffin does really good stuff with not only the salary cap but things like this so the Browns have played the zone defense 67 percent of the time um and they have so two-thirds of the time they're in zone um eighth best zone defense per team that's 6.9 27th best man defense 8.4 yards uh per attempt when you look at some of the numbers of the teams that are better at man defense they're usually the more dominant defenses I I get that they're playing well in zone I don't think they have I think they have Personnel to be more aggressive that's that's my only issue with it I think that um you know because I saw Jack post this earlier and you know you're right he does great work you know I've been able to speak with him several times I really like what he does and um this one it kind of surprises me because the the defensive backs they have are they really are better in man coverage but I think this is a product of the defensive line it's it's kind of hard you can't cover in Man Forever um so in order for a cornerback to be to excel in man coverage the ball needs to come out of the quarterback's hand quickly um you also have to be able to trust the safeties to play that kind of deep coverage and the Browns have issues there as well so I think I think the issues on the front of the defensive line um especially defensive tackle and the issues in the back end are really kind of forcing them to play zone more than when they do play man they're not very successful because of that yeah that's uh that's very fair everything in defense is interrelated that is a uh a very fair reaction to that uh ESPN's Bull prediction for this game um Nick Chubb will run for a hundred yards Ravens have the second best run defense average of 81.2 yards a game have not allowed a hundred yard rusher in 21 straight games longest active streak in the AFC Chubb has totaled the most rushing yards against Baltimore since 2020 gaining over 300 at 303. uh this kind of gets us to the other part of it the Browns run game has just not been able to click the last several games yeah and you know that um losing Ethan pochick at Center was a huge reason for that you know he was really good in the Run game Wyatt teller was out for a bit I don't know that he's really um back to 100 health because they're just not as dominant right there but Nick Chubb has had a lot of success I think they they also pointed out in there that he had 91 yards last time on 16 carries against Baltimore so I think if they give him the ball a lot um he can do it I the biggest question as to whether or not he gets 100 yards is going to be you know if Cleveland's trying to get an extended look at somebody like Jerome Ford but if they stay true to their game and they can get the offensive line back in sync then I think you could see him do it yeah and the the other thing is is this figures to be a close low scoring game so um it's not like they're going to have to be chasing points either uh John Harbaugh talked about Nick Chubb um and just kind of the success he had against the Ravens the last time in the no huddle as well that's the big challenge with him because you know any play can be that place so like when you do get the you know the stops which people are like well ho-hum I guess it takes a lot to get those stops got a big physical offensive line they have good blocking tight ends receivers are blocked and he's he's a powerful tough Runner also Kareem hunt and then you know Chubb has got that that speed so if you're not right there to stop to play and it cracks through there then he can accelerate and go and we've seen that obviously in the past so you that's why you're asking Jamison uh it's a big challenge just for that reason no we prepare for no huddle all the time it's just it's tough to defend it you know this is a challenging thing and all of a sudden the tempo changes the plays change and you know they find something you know any offense is always looking for something to spark them you know and sometimes it can be a change of tempo so we just practice that here at the end of practice as you saw so um yeah that's that's something that we're very aware of yeah and Randy the other thing is it's going to be interesting at some point DeShaun Watson's legs are going to break down some defenses yeah they are and I think that the more comfortable he gets in the offense the more you're going to see them try to switch things up get that Tempo going that John Harbaugh was talking about right now it might be a little harder for them to do the no huddle since he hasn't had a lot of experience with these guys um but I do think that that is a major weapon for most offices um and yeah he's right how hard it is to stop Nick Chubb and a lot of us forget you know I know I'm guilty of it uh but you forget just how fast Chubb is I mean I know we see it but you you first think of him you think of that big the fact that he's a 220 pound back and then he pulls people over but you know harbo's right and he gets to the cracks he he can take it to the next level in a hurry Randy Jersey from dog pound daily and I are going to step aside take one more time out other side of the break uh we'll head back to the voicemail of Truth and reason also look at the draft classes the last three of them they're Pro Football Focus grades um some interesting stuff sports h-o-f for more details thank you [Music] we continue talking browns with Randy guerzi from dog pound daily let's head back to the voicemail of Truth and reason hey love the show longtime viewer often call I just have a quick question I always hear you guys talking about how Andrew Berry in the front office was building around the Sean Watson but do you think that there is a state of urgency to build around the defense for Miles Garrett I mean the dude is amazing and he's being double teamed more than anybody in the league and he still has just as much pressures and sacks as anybody in the league so do you think that there's urgency to build around him on the defensive side you know like get him some defensive tackle help him some other guy so it's not just him and Clowney getting double teamed on both sides I just was wondering you know they always talk about building around DeShaun Watson on the offense but what about doing the Roger defensive star like miles Carrick I just want to hear your thoughts go Barnes absolutely uh as always appreciate all the voicemails Randy yeah there there has to be a sense of urgency because you've got chub you've got um miles Garrett you have guys and there's a three or four year window that you better make some hay otherwise you gotta restart the whole process yeah there's truth to that um but I also believe that once when they made this commitment to John Watson that that's where their urgency lies now um you know miles Garrett is an excellent player but you don't see a whole lot throughout the history of the NFL where teams are being led to and winning Super Bowls because of their defense uh the San Francisco 49ers I know they constantly do well um they have number one defense in the NFL right now they're always winning games but they haven't been winning the big ones haven't been winning the Super Bowl so I think the teams that do win it all they're going to be more focused on the offensive side of the ball um you definitely don't want to you know you want to keep players that are Elite on defense when you have them but I don't necessarily think that a lot of teams are looking at trying to build around that even the Rams who have Aaron Donald they were you know willing to throw it to you know mortgage their future for Matt Stafford and that's when they finally won it they didn't win it because Aaron Donald they won it because they finally got a quarterback but I think the the thing is they they need to get pieces around him defensively not necessarily high-priced pieces but you got to find some defensive tackles that are better than than what we've got I agree with that wholeheartedly um and that and that's another thing that the Rams you know speaking to them that's what they did is they did draft well um and unfortunately I don't see much urgency from Andrew Barry to build bad defense um at least not at the front he he seems to be focused more on adding defensive backs you know um you had Martin Emerson as his first pick this year he had Greg knit Newsom as his first pick last year um grant grant delpit was an early pick for him so he seems like he's focused more on the secondary uh than trying to build the front of that defensive line um I don't know that I agree with that I think that I would I would rather have a stronger defensive line uh but that seems to be his Focus yeah let's see if that changes because of the way the the run defense was this year so I I think he's the guy that adapts hope so yeah knock on knock on this all right um let's take a look at the last three draft classes Pro Football Focus grades form these are the the last two so 20 22 2021 uh Martin Emerson grades out of 69.6 that's 34th best Alex Wright small sample size but uh 39.8 not doing great David Bell small sample size not doing great perion Winfrey improving still uh 95th Cade York not on there just the kickers Jerome Ford again Pro Football Focus greatest 50 really limited Michael Woods limited 54.7 Thomas is 50.6 he has had some some flashes the second year one so the the draft class from last year these ones are concerning um Greg Newsome 65.5 46th ranked cornerback uh Jeremiah USU koramoa [Music] um 64.239 Schwartz not enough playing time to be ranked Hudson not enough playing time to be ranked Tommy togai at 30.4 122 and then let's go back to the 2020 draft class gedrick Wills 54th at a 63.1 he's got to be better than that Grant Delp it's 76th jordanelli at 115th um Jacob Phillips 78th Donovan people's Jones who they got in the sixth round um 56th ranked wide receiver with a 68.4 so again with some of the first and second year guys it might be a little too early to judge but the draft class has to I mean especially after you've traded away you know your number ones you got to get more of the Donovan people's Jones kind of hits than the jedric wills misses at this point yeah and it's it's um I think Andrew Berry you know I've always liked him I like his uh his approach his philosophy his demeanor and everything but I think he did so well with hitting on the Donovan people Jones pick and um Grant delpit and Jed Wills look so good at the beginning I know dope and missed his rookie year but he looked good when he came on last year that I think we really started kind of anointing him a little early when you start looking at this and seeing how the players are are performing it's a little bit concerning um but yeah I mean the Martin Emerson pick is really good I think that the the drop-off for jok and Greg Newsom has a bit to do with what we're talking about earlier with the defensive line you know uh jlk is a 225 pound linebacker so you know he he can't be going and taking on guards and tackles he needs defensive tackles are going to free him up uh same with Newsome as we're talking about he's more of a man cover guy but you know nobody can sit there and cover forever eventually guy's going to get open so I think they really need to focus on the defensive line if you see the biggest misses on here it looks like they're all the defensive lineman the defensive tackles especially Jordan Elliott was really bad Tommy togey eye has looked really bad and I know Perry on Winfrey's getting better now so I hope there's some hope that maybe he can kind of turn it around but the the whiffs on the defensive tackle uh those have been bad and I think they're hurting everybody yeah I would agree with you they either have to reevaluate how they're grading these guys and and what they're looking for or go and get a veteran that that has done it uh Randy is always great stuff appreciate the time and the Insight thanks very much yeah thank you for having me all right Randy Jersey make sure you check them out pages of dog pound daily uh each and every week we recognize a role model student from somewhere across the state of Ohio this week we are going to recognize the school of the year so once every year the Ohio Lottery Partners in education program recognizes one school from the previous year where all of our shining stars and academic All-Stars have come the Ohio Lottery Partners in education program is proud to salute Trinity High School this week's School of the year on behalf of the Ohio Lottery we would like to present you with the school of the Year trophies a one thousand dollar Office Max gift card and all of the merchandise that you see behind here autographed merchandise from our professional sports Partners across the state for you to use for fundraising efforts throughout the year congratulations you are the school of the year okay and with that it became official Trinity High School was named the Ohio Lottery Partners in education programs School of the year for 2021-22 this is a very awesome award for Trinity High School our students are incredibly excited to represent the Ohio Lottery as a partner in education Trinity High School has always been known as a very spirited School our kids love each other it is a tight-knit community and as I said this is just for all of us a great honor to represent the lottery the Partners in education program was established to recognize outstanding schools outstanding students and outstanding teachers the things that they're doing both inside and outside of the classroom so every month we take nominations from all over the state so you can nominate an outstanding student or teacher and they go through a drawing process and each month we have an academic All-Star and a teacher of the month so that's the first step in the process how Trinity High School got to this point is that they had a student who was nominated for academic All-Star last year so at the end of the year we do a drawing of all of the schools who have participated in the partners in education program and that's how we get the school of the year the school of the Year assembly at Trinity was done in conjunction with homecoming making for an extended celebration the partners in education program give signed items that can be used for fundraising to Trinity as well as a financial reward that's earmarked for a very specific purpose that could go in so many places but our greatest need for that right now will be for replacement Chromebooks every every student has a Chromebook and we're always looking to add to our stockpile of Chromebooks Trinity High School requires their students to have internships it gives the students both Real World experience and it gets them involved in the community anytime we can have a student and celebrate their success it's something that is very good for young people and so when we get the opportunity to present to organizations like the lottery that will promote our kids and all the goodness that they are and all the good they do in the world we take advantage of that all the time and this is exactly one case where it turned out in a beautiful way that we end up being you know the high school of the year and partners in education with Lottery the whole reason the Ohio Lottery exists is to help generate funds to support education here in our state of Ohio so when you talk specifically about those video segments where we're highlighting students that's our you know that's our whole goal our whole goal is to generate money to give back to education to help students in the state of Ohio do better in the classroom and Beyond congratulations to the Trinity Trojans the Ohio Lottery Partners in education programs School of the year for 2021 and 22. if you know a student who 's recognition we want to hear about them and you can nominate them completely online go to ohiolottery.com find the about section click on Partners in education there you will see links to nomination forms nominate that student as an academic All-Star and they could end up being featured as our next Shining Star congratulations to Trinity High School this year's School of the year that's going to do it for this
