[Music] you know what really funny Matt essic who is in today for Anthony speaking of you know who the voice is in that that uh open that show open I do not uh that's Adam Amin who many of you most people listening will know from Fox Sports and I was literally just texting him an hour ago I guess I picked the right one for the timing then you did that that's that's really remarkable that's Matt and I have not talked very much today outside of outside of a few texts because obviously he's got Chris's show to do and he's sticking around today uh Toby Altis are in for ant tomorrow um which would be a lot of fun I haven't had a chance to work with Toby a whole lot uh but I really always enjoy getting to chat with him and he's come on the show was a guest a couple of times doing that stuff and when he's been out covering uh Commander camp with this but um yeah no the NBA schedule dropped today and Adam is the play-by-play voice of the Chicago Bulls on TV as well as the football work that he does which is why he's been on our show before um and I've I've known Adam for a long time he's a genuinely close friend um but we I was joking because uh Matt you know me well enough to know that I am not someone who is a a partyer we we don't really stay up late in the Hoffman household like oh we make it like we have a running choke kind of on the show with Anthony like if I make it to like if I text Anthony about a sporting event that's happening at 11 o'clock at night his response is unfailingly why are you still awake or you're still awake and and Adam on top of being one of the best play-by-play man in America is a DJ he'll be only up late yeah so he'll be out and you know DJing in in a some nightclub in Chicago until 3 in the morning and so I was like are you ready to have the lamest New Year's Eve you ever had cuz you can come hang out at our house and then go to bed because you have to call a game the next day and he was pumped that's that's that's what happened between the hours of three and four o'clock for me I mean that's a that's a pretty good deal though knowing that you're going to be somewhere that you can still hang out with people and then the moment that it hits midnight all lights off everyone's What on earth makes you think we're going to see midnight he could come over have snacks go home by 10: we're not mat you the last time I saw the ball the last time I saw the ball drop live might have been like 2017 that's not true it's probably later than that but only because there was one year where the commanders who by the way we're going to talk about in a moment their joint practice down in Miami and Dan Quinn's comments on Johan Dodson and and the whole thing um but there was one year where uh the season finale was commanders Giants in New York and this is when I was still on the beat and so like me JP Kim those are the three I remember I feel like Phillips might have been there but a lot of us took the train back from it's train right I'm sure you've taken is someone who spent a lot of time in New York um that that Amtrak train from New York oh yeah um we had some crazy Uber driver who like sped us to to the train station from MetLife Stadium um and all of us crammed in had had celebratory beers not of the new year but that that that whatever miserable season we were covering was over um and they might have been cousins last year so maybe it was 20177 and I remember that I was supposed to hang out that night once I got back with a couple of my friends and I text the group chat it was a couple and I text the group chat and uh the girlfriend texts back and goes uh Sam had Sam had a few too many BR bruskies watching the Panthers today so uh I think we're gonna pass because he's currently not awake I had one year when I was in college where I was down in Key West for New Year's and that was insane because they drop a conch for the uh New Year's right well it's right on Duval Street so the main drag all the bars everyone just goes out it's awesome it's so much fun and then ever since then every time that has been New Year's it's like yeah it it's not going to top this well I the thing is like I know a lot of restaurants do stuff around here and I mean it's not like unique to DC but it's just like why would you go somewhere and pay extra for a dinner you can go to tomorrow that all you're getting is a midnight toast yeah I mean if if you're into the champagne and the midnight toast obviously by the way if you want a great deal at a bunch of restaurants it's Restaurant Week in DC yes it is uh have you have you gone anywhere yet have you taken advantage of that I haven't gone anywhere yet but it is also my dad's birthday so in order to make sure that surprises are kept that way we may or may not be taking advantage of that this weekend I see I see um yeah we've got a couple places that we're looking at uh we'll see we'll see what we wind up actually doing because the thing is like we just got back uh and we're still like wait which way is up what H how does how does life operate what are we doing how do I get to work and it's like oh let's pick out more restaurants not not prepared but you got to it's it's one of the best things and then like what's great is in this area you get like DC restaurant week and then it's like oh now it's Arlington restaurant week and then it's Alexandria and I think Alexandria is like in a couple weeks so kind of get to bop around so go find your deals kids go go eat at great restaurants support your local businesses and your appetites okay um Dan Quinn this morning uh well let's let's do a couple news and notes and then we'll dive deeper into this wide receiver thing uh coming up at 4:15 uh by the way uh Steph Goff from The Washington Post will join us at 4:30 uh the US Men's National Team has made its higher it's Mauricio pontinho uh who's coached at Tottenham and Chelsea in the Premier League one of the biggest names available so US soccer on the men's side has their new coach we'll talk to Goff about it uh and then standig is going to join us to recap everything from the Miami joint practice at five but uh to to start with a couple of things that stood out to me today obviously Quinn's comments about wide receiver 2 are very interesting and we're going to see over the next uh or over the weekend how they ultimately stack it up like who gets the first crack at being wide receiver to how long these guys play like what the roles are all that kind of stuff other things that stood out today first and foremost it seems like Jaden Daniels kind of blew everybody away down there and you tend to do that when you throw five straight touchdown passes in the red zone and that's apparently what happen scoring in the red zone is really hard there is limited space and part of the reason a lot of like you can gain yards and be successful in the middle of the field is defenses have to account for getting beat deep they don't want to do that and they would rather give up something shallow and so thus in the middle of the field gaining five yards in the P game is actually not that hard um especially against certain coverages in certain situations I mean if you want to get 12 yards on Third and 22 like that's actually really easy time score situation dictates a lot defensively well in the red zone that threat goes away way and so those deep players are crunching down on the space it's why tall receivers are so valuable in the red zone is the only way to create spaces up and it's why despite the it being the bane of commanders fans existence for much of the Jay guden era a fade in the red zone is actually really beneficial and like a a kind of a higher percentage play because you can get a one-on-one matchup ensure that it's one-on-one and if you have the right receiver like a 50/50 ball or you know make it a 6040 ball like that's better than trying to run a play into super small throwing windows and you know making sure that you see the coverage right there's players you know you have defensive lineman that drop out and you wind up creating a turnover like the the risk is low even if it's very simplified and you know a lot of those fade balls do ultimately fall incomplete so to go against another team's red zone defense where this is not hey it's week one of training camp anymore and they're just playing cover four in the red zone and we know our cover four Red Zone beaters and we're just going to call them and thus crush it in the Red Zone I'd imagine cliff didn't go into the practice knowing all of Miami's Red Zone coverages or if he did it's because it's what they actually play um although I guess they have a new defensive coordinator this year so there's that um the point being this is supposed to be hard and the fact that Jaden Daniels went down there and he had success in other periods he did have a couple of turnovers today although one was because McLaren slipped in a two-minute drill another bounced off Cole Turner Turner's hands as he got hit uh was what everybody who was down there watching said uh and we'll get more of course from standing at five o'clock but under basically any circumstances even if you know the coverages unless the defense is literally giving it to you to go down and go bang bang bang bang bang I think that was five and score touchdown after touchdown five straight plays during a red zone period against another team is insanely impressive so we will get the uh the bigger scoop on everything that happened today from standing coming up at 5 next though the comments of the day are a continuation of a lot of stuff that we were talking about yesterday and the status of Jan doson on this roster not is he gonna make the team I think that that is way over saying it but the idea that he could be falling and perhaps even rapidly down the depth chart now that's a reality we'll let you hear from the horse's mouth what Dan Quinn said about the wide receiver 2 position about Jan doson next it's the Huffman show on the team 980 and always live on the free Odyssey app [Music] h [Music] he [Music] he [Music] he hey [Music] h [Music] a [Music] he [Music] it's off and show we're on the team 980 always live as well on the free Odyssey app and we are streaming live on YouTube as well at the team980 if you'd like to watch the show perhaps you're driving home right now and you enjoy it and you're like man I want to keep consuming the show once I get out of my car well you can fire up the Odyssey app and you know whether it's on your Amazon Alexa or any other device or uh your phone however you want to connect that or you can just go to YouTube on your smart TV and uh subscribe to the team980 and there will'll be so it's funny watching the reaction to certain stories sometimes because fans will be up in a or one pocket of the fan base will be up in a frenzy and the other will be like why is the media talking about this and that was exactly what was happening over the last 24 hours with the Jan datson story because opinions are all over the place and that is what happens with the Reckless speculation of August in the NFL when we are just talking about hypotheticals and we only have parts of the picture how datson is doing uh in one particular game was certainly worth talking about and more specifically how much he played in that particular game it begs a lot of questions what we don't have is a lot of answers but there were certainly some folks that kind of got defensive of doson and thought this was a totally mediad driven oh my God he's he's wide receiver two how could you possibly well the cool part about being in the media if you're say sam 48 who asked this question is you get to go and ask the principles you get to go to Dan Quinn and be like hey what's going on with wide receiver 2 Johan doson played a lot of snaps what's what's up there and so this morning before the joint practice against the Dolphins Sam 4ier asked Dan Quinn what's going on with wide receiver 2 currently and here is Dan's answer I would say we are right in the middle of it and so um you'll see a lot of guys in today you'll see two three four five there's a lot of guys that are really battling I've been uh really impressed with alade and uh I thought he's had a really strong Camp uh I'm looking forward to getting um Luke some extra work into here Jian uh dami so that's where we're at and then the Special Teams is going to have a factor in that as well okay sure doesn't sound like Johan dodson's got a lock on wide receiver too and by the way the other cool part about doing this job and and jobs like Sam's and Ben standig and and on down the list John K is is that we also get to go and watch and I think this was pretty obvious that Johan doson is not locked in at wide receiver 2 I think what varies what is not or what is more up for debate is not whether there's anything set Beyond Terry McLaren as wide receiver one is fairly obvious should have been already but is now very very obvious after Dan Quinn statement this morning that that is there's nothing decided I think what is more going to be sus out and what is more open to interpretation is what is John doson right now for this team obviously he's a former first- round pick but he wasn't selected by Adam Peters and thus I don't know how much that actually means my guess is basically nothing other than the logistical consideration of his contract that he is cost a certain amount of money and to cut him would cost a certain amount of money or to move him or whatever they're not by the way they're not cutting him just that there are contractual logistical parts that if you have more invested in a player whether you as a front office gave that player that money or not it does make moving on from them uh or or not utilizing them and giving them a chance to prove that they're worth what you're paying them uh it does make that a little bit harder of of a mental exercise so that's Thing One Thing Two when I see Jan playing as much as he did to me it's two things one it is absolutely a hey let's see what if this guy can prove it to us we're going to put him in a bunch of situations and see if if he can do things that we're asking whether it's running routes from a certain spot running certain kinds of routes working with different quarterbacks what whatever the challenge is whatever they want to put on the test it's clear they wanted to test Jan Dodson uh and not like oh we're going to test you but like they wanted to give him a test but it's also I think for them they want to know the answers to the test so they know what to do with him not so much of a hey we're trying to test you and see what you're made of kind of test it's a how do you do here okay you got only got to see there not you're a failure or you're not good enough and and how how could we possibly keep you because you got a C it's we're not going to put you in that position because you get an A over here B over here a bidas over here those are all better than C oh God on that one you got a D we're not going to ask you to do that either and so as they try to learn Jian from the inside it's one thing to play against him but to really study him know him understand how he ticks use him in this system with this scheme with this set of players around him where does he fit and there's only so much of that you can do in practice and so you all of a sudden you have 30 reps to give him in a game 30 snaps and let's go out and see how he does can he block on the outside can he block from the slot can he come back and crack as a blocker uh like can we trust him to hit a linebacker hit a safety say probably not um can he separate against certain guys and win on certain routes in the timing that he needs to because Jan is a guy last year that at times would win if you watch the tape but then if you pause the tape when he wins you look back and and it the quarterback's already moved on because he takes too long um he doesn't play with the urgency that you need to at the NFL level that was a huge problem for Jan last year also there are times where he gets uh roughed up a little bit in routes the the physicality is not there and so I think that this is as much experimenting to try to figure out what the best role is for Jan as much as oh he doesn't he doesn't have a role here at all so that's that's one thing I would say I will add though the last part of Quinn's answer there when he says special teams are important really is interesting because Jan doson doesn't really have a role on special teams like yes they're having him return punts in practice catch punts in practice but he's not going to cover kicks and so if he's going to be wide receiver three or four which again I don't think I don't think Four's on the table like I don't think realistically think he's going to be the fourth the guy with the fourth most snaps this year at wide receiver assuming everyone's healthy right if the de if we're putting together depth chart I think it's Terry I think I think it's probably going to be either Jan or lamade zakus I think diami and Luke mcaffrey or somewhere like I don't I don't think Jan's falling too far down that pecking order but if they're trying to figure out how to construct a roster like you can't have a fourth or fifth wide receiver that doesn't play special teams that just doesn't work and so I'll go back to something that I've said a number of times over the past couple days which is if a team wants to trade for Johan doson I do think they would listen because I don't think that he necessarily fits what they are trying to build which I will now stop for a moment and state something that should be obvious but is hysterically not based off of every internet conversation that I see no they can't trade him for Brandon hayuk Matt Pop Quiz don't worry this is not a this is not a hard one who is outside of John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan most responsible for building the roster in San Francisco the current roster yeah well I I mean I would say Adam Peters is a very big portion yeah Adam Peters so wouldn't it make sense that if Jan Dodson doesn't fit what Adam peters's current team and current roster is is is doing that he's not gonna fit the one that's already built in that same image yeah no like like if he's not physical and big and and tough enough uh to be here and that's the problem you're not going to trade him to the place that the GM who is employing the same strategy just came from like this isn't Madden where you turn Fair Trades off like the other team gets to say no and if Jan doson doesn't fit the player profile of a Washington commander in 2024 he sure is you know what doesn't fit a San Francisco 49er what is wrong with you people think for 4 seconds yeah there's not a whole lot that should lead you to believe that a player who the current Commander organization is kind of saying you know what he's not good enough right now would meet the standards of what is arguably the most model that they're building on the model system the tightest system the do your job no no absolutely they're not interested in like yes I get it on a baseline level because the Niners apparently want a wide receiver but they are going to want someone who fits what they do and Johan doson is potentially on the trade block because he doesn't fit what they do cuz what they do is what this team wants to do okay that's enough of the San Francisco uh sidebar sidebar they're more fun if they're from Boston all right uh what does Quinn expect from Dotson both in the game and in general wrapping up with the head coach this morning do you expect to play simar volum uh probably yep I would say I don't know if it'll be the exact same but it'll be in the similar space um same uh hi volumes on the other guys that I listed as well what would you like to see more of L from him I mean just having come in new season with any new player what would you like to see yeah I think with all the guys that we were talking about at that spot um the urgency um The Run game the pass game so like you know the quickness in and out of breaks so not Everybody Plays the same spot Nikki but I do want to see with he and with all the other guys really finding some really competitive moments you you know the plays after the catch the blocks you know at the point of attack um sometimes even in manto man during this phase of evaluation that he beat the person even though the ball didn't go to that spot so um I'm really trying to evaluate them with and without the ball it's all the stuff that we've we have been talking about for basically a year with Jan he had a really good camp last year and that's something I will keep in mind I'll close with this John had a pretty good camp last year to an excellent Camp last year it really started on fire and tapered off a little bit towards the end but was really Sensational for the entire spring and and into the summer and then he was brutally bad during the season maybe it's opposite this year maybe he just needs to get in the games in this system and once they start game planning some stuff up he'll take off but the problem is the thing that's going to get him on the field playing with urgency playing with physicality is not his game and it can either become his game in the way that like much different Talent much different draft investment much different all that but Cole Turner was it feels like he was told hey dude if you don't play like your hair's on fire every snap you don't have a future here and I don't know if Cole Turner is actually good enough to make this team and I don't know the numbers are going to play out for him because he's got three tight ends that are distinctly in front of him but that dude has played his ass off every single snap of every single play and if Johan doson was doing that I don't think we're having this conversation not to say that he's slacking not to say that he doesn't have a good work ethic but it's learning how to do that at what is now the standard for the commanders and that's different it takes guys time and I'm hoping that Jan cat catches on he's a great kid I think he's really smart I think he's thoughtful um I think he's really talented but that stuff isn't enough there has to be that that burning desire that just jumps off the screen jumps off the tape jumps out in the eyes of the coaches If You're Gonna Play for Dan Quinn and ultimately the guy who's deciding the 53 and Adam Peters now again I don't think that they're going to cut him because contractually it doesn't make sense talent-wise it doesn't make sense but how many minutes he plays how many snaps he gets how many targets all that kind of stuff that is very much influ and I think right now if the season started tomorrow he would be behind at the very least alamad zakus on the depth chart when we get back the US men's national soccer team has its new coach who is he and how did they arrive at that decision our guy Steven Goff from The Washington Post joins us next he [Music] he [Music] he he [Music] he [Music] he [Music] it's opman show we're on the team 980 always live as well on the free Odyssey app the NBA schedule dropped we'll give you some of the Wizards highlights at 4:45 Ben standing at five from Miami after the Commander's joint practice with the dolphins right now monster story today in the soccer World which means we're going to bring in our guy stevenh Goff from The Washington Post Stephen how are you sir hey great to join you uh great to have you are you uh are you all adjusted being back from France I think feel like today is the first day that I've readjusted since I was over there how's your how's the body clock doing yeah it takes a little time the first day it's adrenaline getting back you probably experience that and and then after that it settles in and and and your body's uh not right not quite right um so yeah no it's it's it's it's taking a little bit of time yeah uh I was very scared of my first show back because I was like wait 7 o'clock is 1:00 a.m. Paris time that's when the show ends this could get ugly but we made it and we made we made it now to a Thursday where the US Men's National Team is retaking the spotlight as they are set to hire Mauricio pontinho as their new coach um can you take us as much as you can Stephen inside the process of settling on him and give kind of the the basic uh for our audience biography the Top Line we can dive into it more in a second but the why they they settle on him and and his experiences well I would start out by saying it's not done yet um you know there's there seems to be an agreement in place but um there's still some contract issues to get through and US soccer's board of directors has to approve it it seems like it's going to happen but it's it's it's not done um and you know we've we've seen we've we've seen other cases fall apart um in the over the years with coaches so um yeah I would say it seems probable but not finished yet he is the top choice they have been talking to him um he is a big name and he's an expensive name um he comes with he would come with a portfolio that includes some major clubs um like Spurs uh PSG and Chelsea among others uh Argentine by birth has coached in Europe for many years uh no no national team coaching experience so that's certainly um certainly something that will need to be addressed um but uh yeah you know they've they've talked about getting the right guy ahead of the 2026 World Cup and they you know um they got it wrong last year when they rehired Greg berhalter I mean in uh you know looking back on it it was the wrong decision um but uh that's where we are and I imagine if there are no major complications that um that they'll finalize this um if not in the next few days then in the next couple weeks so the contractual situation with Chelsea that was I was going to ask about that so let's go ahead and knock that out and then we can get more into who he has been as a coach and what he might be with the US assuming this does get done what are the hurdles that remain with I guess it's the money owed to him by Chelsea and and digging through that that seems to be the the headline here what more can you tell us about what hurdles remain to actually having us soccer land their favorite candidate yeah I mean it seems you know he he's I guess technically still employed by Chelsea because they haven't uh settled his his financial um uh payouts uh so you know these are legal things and and they can be overcome I don't think it's I don't think it's going to be a major issue but you got to get them done um so I I think that's what's happening I I don't know the details of the Chelsea Financial structure and and the the contract settlement that they reached with him when uh they parted ways in May uh so that's certainly part of it and um you know there's a contract with us soccer that needs to be approved as well um so there's a lot of moving Parts here I think and and I'd be surprised if it does not um all come to fruition uh but you know it's it's not just a simple matter matter of um you know announcing his hiring uh whether it today tomorrow they've there's still some work to do there Stephen Goff Washington Post soccer Insider with us here on the Hoffman show talking about the US Men's National Team uh settling on Mauricio pontinho as their Top Choice I'll phrase it that way uh as they still have those hurdles uh to to obviously overcome let's say they get there they cross the finish line he's the coach what about him appealed to them and how does he fit with this player pool that they are trying to maximize in 2026 for the World Cup yeah I mean he's worked uh he's apparently worked very well with young players in the past and so that's a good sign and the US national team a lot of its core uh is Young um you know he has an aggressive style um with pressure all over the field um Turned the ball over quickly and you know Greg berhalter um deployed that as well um in his system so that doesn't change a lot um I think in the bigger picture here you're talking about someone who Garners a lot of respect in international soccer um someone who comes from the outside and isn't um doesn't have alliances with whether it's um you know mlfs or marketing US soccer marketing arm or any of the other um kind of kind of inside ties that um that have maybe uh hurt the cause um or certainly complicated the cause and were um uh brought up you know when criticizing Greg berhalter that he was just too too connected to to US soccer entities so you know it's it's fresh it's a big name it's someone that everyone around the world knows and he would come in without any really major tests before the World Cup it would be his opportunity to mold the team the way he uh he would like over the next um what 21 22 months because you know cop America's behind us there's no cop America next year there's cona Gold Cup and there'll be a lot of friendlies and the Nations league and a lot a lot of smaller uh competitions but nothing that you would be able to judge him on uh definitively in a negative way like burh halter the team performed poorly at cop America and that was the end of Greg burh halter there's there's not an event uh between now and the World Cup where you could say oh this isn't working let's get rid of them um he'll have the time the space to really um you know form this team whether it's through you know uh roster adjustments or the style of play um the way he wants over um almost two years last thing for Steven Goff soccer Insider for the Washington Post what does this say about like kind of the transformation and I'll say the state of US soccer specifically like Matt Crocker comes in he's English he and pontino actually crossed at Southampton back in 2013 um aguchi Anu is one of the vice presidents like gu i' I've known him for a long time I know his thoughts on kind of some of the American soccer system and he was a guy that at a time when a lot of American players weren't going to Europe went over and played in Europe and had has a vast number amount of experience over there obviously they brought in Emma haes on on the women's side so you now have this it it's we're no longer inside the American bubble what does that say about the state of US soccer whether that is better worse or just different yeah I mean I think they're to at the start they're spending money I mean it's gonna I don't know what the contract's going to look like but it's going to take a lot uh to sign him up uh they made Mah is the highest paid women's soccer coach in the world um and certainly that turned out to be a great move because of the um impact she had so quickly at the Olympics um you know they've brought in there have been foreign coaches in the past uh Jurgen kinman although he had us ties um was in place uh for several years and um on the women's side they've they've had um International coaches so um yeah I think it has more to do with how much they're willing to spend and the status of some of these coaches on the global stage that they're showing the ambition to hire um you know Jurgen klopp was mentioned uh as a possible Target although that was never going to happen um but at least they're thinking big they thought big with Emma Hayes uh they got her and they won a gold medal um you know looks like they're going to bring in pettino who's has experience um coaching some of the biggest clubs in the world um that's ambitious and uh you know whether it pays off with him or not um at the World Cup at a a deep run at the World Cup remains to be seen but um they're making moves and they're they're willing to spend the money to to get these people in place uh to help the not just the immediate uh Pursuits but also um you know the bigger picture of improving the programs Stephen Goff uh Wasing or Washington Post soccer Insider always appreciate appreciate your time and best of luck my friend with the rest of your jetl you too many thanks Craig that's Stephen Goff everybody with us here on the hofman show if you want to follow him on Twitter for more coverage it's soccer Insider when we get back uh how about a little Hoops as the NBA schedule has come out we'll give you some of the Wizards highlights and then it's back 5:30 never read the comments here on the Hoffman show [Music] he [Music] hey [Music] he [Music] he [Music] h [Music] oh [Music] he [Music] hey hey [Music] he [Music] it's off and show we're on the team 980 always live as well on the free Odyssey app tonight uh WNBA season resumes uh including the mystics in Minnesota you can hear that that here on the team 980 and of course we your home for the Wizards as well and matd IG today today schedule release day did you know that was happening until you got the email with the schedule uh I did not I I found out today when I got to work and I was like oh so that that's new I know I've been gone but like I that's something that should have been on my radar I I definitely did not realize that today was and for the NFL the NFL does a wacky bit where they do an announcement about the announcement schedule release coming next Thursday and it's like you announced when the announcement is happening why can't you just kind of haphazardly put it out there earlier in the hey start of the league year it's March 15th uh the schedule will be released on May 8th okay cool thanks we'll look forward to it but whatever uh the uh the NBA schedule dropped uh as mentioned in trending it'll open with the Celtics hosting the Knicks Celtics also will open the Wizards season uh Thursday October 24th at Capital One Arena Wizards are actually starting with pair of home games you get the Celtics you get the Cavs uh get the Hawks in that that first week as well uh a lot of years Matt uh you've had to wait for Steph Curry to come to town not this year 7:15 Monday November 4th like the fifth or sixth game of the season you get the Warriors so that's exciting yeah especially because usually six games into the season we haven't given up hope yet yeah let Steph Curry be the one to dash The Hope sounds great he did it for France yes he did it for Serbia and France uh then big old road trip they're not home they're away from the fourth all the way until November 17th when they face the Pistons always intriguing Celtics back in town for an NBA Cup game uh on November 22nd Bulls NBA cup November 26th Clippers non-nba cup that's always fun cuz they they switch the floor on back-to-back nights against the Clippers uh Luca and the Mavs in town Thursday December 5th joic in company in town on December 7th J Morant on the eighth so that's that's a nice little fifth uh what was that three games four days uh star power from the West Coast coming in that's fun uh they're home quite a bit around the holiday so if you got family coming to town and you want to go to zardo game Hornets probably not going to be hard to get tickets to that one on Thursday December 26th uh then you got the Nixon town on the 28th and the 30th Bulls in town on New Year's Day uh Zion on the Pelicans uh January 5th uh let's see who else Anthony Edwards January 13th with t-wolves uh Durant and the Suns here on January 16th is Kevin Durant Sil a Phoenix Sun when they come here on January 16th um I'm gonna say yes for the fact that he has he's been with the team now two years yeah yeah it's about time for him to swap to another team it is but also like I feel like he and Deon Booker had a good summer he also does tend to leave teams at the he doesn't leave teams in the middle of Seasons he wait when Kyrie blew up the Nets then it was like oh we gotta we got to go here yeah yeah that's also too far away from the trade deadline I don't feel like it's it's that uh Lebron and the Lakers here Thursday January 30th so mark your calendars get your tickets now uh wemi in town February 10th your one and only wemi Monday February 10th uh I'm gonna go ahead and and ask the boss wait is that gonna be the Monday after the Super Bowl oh that would suck I can't do the show from Capital One Arena the day after the Super Bowl but I want to and they play the pace and then there's the All-Star break uh Giannis and the Bucks in town uh late February uh 21st uh you got your Denny Avia return game Wednesday February 26th Blazers are in town on Denny posting on Instagram from Miami good for him uh longest road trip of the season starts after their game against Utah March 5th they're away for one two three four five six seven straight they come back on March 21st those are always fun Matt uh because we have Dave Johnson on on on game days and I go Dave do you know where you are and he goes no no we love we love a mid road trip Dave Johnson especially West Coast I was about to say at least it is Toronto Toronto Detroit Detroit that for four of the games from Saturday until Thursday they're kind of they're still bouncing around but yeah but then you then you go Denver La Portland yikes fun that's that's a lot of travel uh back home against the magic to end that on 21st uh and then the highlights of the rest of the season there there aren't many you got Wednesday April 9th Joel embiid in town hopefully he's healthy at that point of the year has been a an issue uh and they CL that's their last home game of the season they close out with the bulls away on April 11th and then in Miami that's a great place to end your season hey guys I think we're just going to stay here we're going to hang out for a little bit April 13th 1:00 game against Miami on that Sunday that's the that's that's the highlights of the wizard schedule Matt exciting I mean I'm down for more basketball always I have very non expectations this season hope even if they're low expectations it's still an expectation an expectation doesn't necess or doesn't by definition have a height no and I guess my my expectations are just a little bit of growth this last season was definitely a oh wow this we know where we're at entirely in the system we need to be progressing yeah and that's what I'm looking for my hope is is progress for the guys that have been here a couple more moves potentially to continue to shake up the roster and that Alex SAR doesn't look like he's terrible and he didn't have the greatest summer league uh offensively that's fine he showed a lot of flashes defensively and with like basically the entire rest of his game so I hope I I just hope that we don't come out of this season the same way that we felt about Johnny Davis after his rookie year we're like oh no top 10 pick that was it yikes and I know that you know look he's the number two pick in a draft where they're you know the guy who went one and saw at two and and everybody else in any other year would probably like next year they would have all gone seventh or worse so there's that but but just please confidence and and then we'll see where they goes see see what they grow I I do feel like with with uh oh my God I uh Brian Keefe I kind want to say Kenny Atkinson I'm like that's not who they hired um Brian coached under Kenny and I couldn't get that out of my head uh with Brian Keef at the helm like they will be far more competitive this year like the their givea you know what level will just be a lot higher the standard will be a lot higher uh and it should be a lot of fun to see uh this team come together and so again there's there's watching your team get their doors blown off and their teeth kicked in night in Night Out is is not a fun way to be as a basketball fan and I'm not trying to sugarcoat that that part of it for anyone but if you can find ways to find joy in the process then it's going to be far more rewarding at the end if this thing works out and if not we can all just be mad and be like fire everybody because that's that's how Sports work for better and and mostly for Worse all right uh when we get back back here on the Hoffman show Ben standig live from Miami spent the morning covering the joint practice we've got every Nitty Gritty detail from standing next [Music] he [Music] he [Music] he [Music] he he [Music] he [Music] he [Music] he [Music] hour number two of the Hoffman show on the team 980 always live as well on the free Odyssey app 5: top story of the day you know how it goes it's time for not my beat today's top story from the perspective of someone who's there you are looking live this just in not my beat today it is our guy Ben standig of course Commander beat reporter for the athletic he is down in South Florida uh Ben how are you sir uh Craig doing well I'm not going to you know we've all had all that heat up in the uh DC area for several weeks but uh it's different down here I'll just leave it at that yeah South Florida is nasty so I saw I saw at the end of practice they moved inside today was that because a storm came in or did it just get that damn hot they were like this is stupid let's go to the air conditioning uh I don't know there was not a storm it was they weren't even inside very long but both teams did like a two-minute drill Miami went for first and it was you know one a few plays Washington its first play Jaden Daniels goes to throw to Terry McClaren on an out patter but Terry Falls uh Kendall Fuller is is guarding him and he intercepts it and that was it like they didn't like be like a it's only one play let just keep going so they weren't yeah they weren't inside long I don't know why I was happy for those 10 minutes for the air conditioning but uh yeah it was kind of odd okay maybe they thought a storm was coming or something I don't know whatever uh that's that's that uh outside like wow it's hot out here um the the big story online today is of course the discourse about Jan doson and wide receiver 2 we'll get there but as you walk away from practice like what's the thing that you keep thinking about going back to whether it's a part of practice something you saw like what what's your biggest takeaway from the commander practice today with the dolphins so I I just follow the story a little bit ago that'll be up on the athletic and I reviewed the not what I had written about you know kind of everything I had to check with one of the other writer like hey don't be care I feel like this is overly positive was there anything wrong today and nobody could really come up with anything I mean not that I'm looking for the wrong but you know usually there's like something happening but it just really wasn't so it did feel like they were you know on their game relatively speaking I'm not saying they dominated practice but you know there weren't as glaring issues as there were uh last week particularly with the secondary I thought Mike Sanders still had some good moments uh the other guys whether it it's Forbes or Jeremy chin also had some moments so uh you know I I think I think that was pretty good and I think on the offensive side uh the offense was on the far field from where we were so was a little tough to see all beond us but Jaden Daniels and the offense in the Red Zone that's where they started practice and the Miami Riders couldn't get over how much Washington was just throttling them in the red zone that they was like official like five touchdowns in not that many plays and just everything was working with Jaden Daniels and the passing game and uh the uh you know I I go back to Cliff Kingsbury's Mo has been really good starts for whatever teams he's coaching things get a little hairier after that but you know I don't want to go too overboard but it does seem like the offense is is showing some pretty decent efficiency here uh you know even last week right the first possession they go down the field and score so uh I think that was some good good aspects there and again Jaden Daniels continues to uh impress whoever is watching them yeah definitely on the defensive side um that's great to hear especially you think back to the last time these two teams share the field and uh how poor the secondary was last year with Miami and this offense and all the speed and and the matchups and the whole deal um what I saw s ril's name pop up like I don't know if there were turnovers created today like what was so impressive about what they were able to do against this high power you know quick strike Miami offense yeah I I guess it just felt like they were you know they they just weren't getting beat and giving up big plays too much I mean there were you know like last week again Garrett Wilson with the Jets do seemed like he had his way with them uh all over the place here you know they were more effective Sanders still on back-to-back plays in a Red Zone drill he went one-on-one against Tyreek Hill helped knock the ball away and then the next play Miami ran a reverse and he held firm on his side and was able to you know make the play as it were he's just such a smart player and that's continued to show all summer or you know and uh you know like I said you know like I'm not acting like Miami completed no passes but they weren't you know there just weren't as many breakdowns now I say that Tyreek Hill zoomed past juice on one play and if not for a two overthrow has you know like an 80 yard touchdown or something so you know but that's how it goes right you've got to make the other team make a play and that one they didn't so uh and then also I think you know to go back to the defense obviously again no tackling but you know dorren Armstrong got back there would have been a sack if you know he uh you know if if that was allowed and you know the defensive front has you know generally been a strength so far this summer so you know you know uh I just felt like it was a pretty good uh showing overall you know again watching from where our vantage point no replays you can't see everything you might have missed something but it just didn't seem nearly as leaky as it was last week Ben sanded Commander be reporter with us from Miami where the commanders practiced against the Dolphins today we'll play them in a preseason game this weekend Saturday uh 7 o'clock is the kickoff time you know Ben we talk about this wide receiver two thing and like some people are parsing as like well Dodson might start but it might be in the slot and I'm kind of like we all know what we mean here is Jan G to be out there on two wide receiver sets for seror still is there a chance that he winds up being cornerback too if you will or maybe even if you want to put it this way quarterback one that if they're on the rare occasions that they are in some kind of Base defense where there are just two corners on the field that he is playing some on the outside this season yeah and it could be they have two corners with three safeties right so you know you could still have Nickel in that way uh I don't think it's inconceivable I don't I mean I think that look A year ago you know and collectively we're all kind of saying hey Forbes is looking pretty good in Camp things obviously fell apart the the difference here is just that you know part of what s makes sand still work is his uh his smarts on the field and his competitiveness and I think that really holds up I to me he almost feels like the safest Corner they have right now so it won't I I could see it happening he's just obviously not the biggest guy and that's a you know potential liability on on the outside but and maybe they don't want to overdo it right you know hey he's a rookie let's let him learn this slot and go from there but considering the other Corners it's just not you know you can't feel too confident about that group right now I don't think it's inconceivable that Sandra still is on the outside at some points yeah he took some reps there the other day in practice and I was like wait a second what are you doing out there and I also know that they're high on Noah IG banagan and so if that's the case a guy you can play inside outside like I really do wonder if if Sandra still winds up playing uh outside some and whether it's opposite Forbes opposite St juice I I think those two are probably ahead of Michael Davis like it's just it's kind of one of those things Ben that you put a pin in this time of year and whether it comes up immediately at the start of the year and we're sitting there opening day against Tampa being like wow I can't believe he's one of the two guys out there or injuries crop up whatever bad poor play great play by sander still that week four or five like it just wouldn't surprise me if all of a sudden he doesn't leave the field because that's ultimately what it's about right it's just let's get our best guys on the field and as you said he seems like one of their best guys yeah no for sure I mean that is you know across the board even with the the 53 like in a year in which this is a recalibration to use Dan qu win's term this is about acquiring the best talents and figuring out the rest I think this is more about the notion of the position Flex term that we got annoyed with over the last few years but I think one of the things that's different is like it felt like that group was leaning too much into guys who they thought were versible versus taking guys who were the most talented and then figuring out what they can do so I you know I think what you're saying is definitely conceivable that to a degree it is about getting your best guys out there um you know Kendall Fuller uh today he he was he mentioned on Zone that that that play Jaden Daniels made the check that the chech play last week and throws the aboutall 40 yards and he said you know you got to give that guy a lot of credit that shows a lot of confidence as a rookie and sometimes you just have to play football don't worry about X's and O's you just have to go play and so to that extent I kind of think there's something to be said for if you're rebuilding a roster don't worry as much about hey we need such such a player in this one specific situation who are our best players and figure out ways to use them and I feel like that's kind of where they're headed so that then brings us to the actual Dotson discussion what did you see from Jan today after Dan Quinn says and at the pre-practice press conference wide receiver two were in the middle of that competition yeah well I think that the quote in it of itself I think is you know the biggest thing because this is now like the third or four fourth time over the last few days in which something has come up or you know starting with the fact that Dawson played the most snaps in the preseason opener among the receivers and then he was Quinn was asked about it that you know a couple days later and he didn't give the answer like oh we love Jan this that and the other we're just trying different things out he was just like yeah yeah we we're trying guys out we'll see and then today he was asked flat out somebody what's up with your wide receiver 2 competition and he's like yeah we're in the middle of it right now we'll see and then he starts listing off name he starts with zakus gets to Jan later clearly they are not loving something that's going on right now I mean Jan still runs very crisp routes so I don't think it's that he has seemed off AIT uh just like again I don't want to get in like who you know what's going on in somebody's head but I don't know he just seemed off and you know I you know from what I saw today you know I saw him make a couple of catches but I think it goes beyond of that aspect right you know we've all talked about the struggles with jam and Davis uh and and Emanuel Forbes Davis learning the position Forbes trying to improve and every time the coaches are asked about those guys they say hey look Jamon is is take is making this switch with no complaints he's really working hard we're really impressed that he's doing that Forbes kind of the same thing we're trying to help the young man out he put on some weight that shows a lot Etc to Han we're not kind of getting that it's just more of hey yeah there's a competition we'll see so I it does feel like there's something going on that they're just not loving and you know look a lot of this for this team this year beyond the the roster is setting you know resetting the culture and you know that to me is as much as as anything they they are truly living and breathing by the notion of competition it's something that Quinn has in instilled in this group all the way back into the spring and that's continued so yeah I I I you know look and I think I don't think he what this is why he's doing it but it definitely sends a message to the rest of the team if a guy who was picked in the first round just a couple of years ago is not uh the obvious starter when especially when it's not like there's you know some deep group behind them it's showing you guys you got to bring it every day in practice because you know nobody is a sacred C here so let me ask the most open-ended version of this question what are the range of outcomes then for Jan doson with the commanders over the next couple of weeks uh well look obviously he could be you know he could end up starting whether in two or three receiver sets you know look I I think zakus has had a very good camp and and both Dan Quinn to the group and Cliff Kings Barry to me today said said as much and but you know look and he's had some success in the NFL but he's never been a top guy five foot eight you know speed guy like fine but that's not a typical guy number two de's had a really good year we know you know he's been he hasn't done a ton in his first three years but he's got that downfield speed and Quinn has cited his energy a lot as something he likes it's conceivable that D that Jan is you know kind of behind all three of all those guys including Terry now if it gets to that point is when I think things start getting interesting and I talked about this in my podcast the other day that you know when you look at the 32 snaps and then the comments that have been made and all that like I don't know it seems like that you know I I don't this is not reporting I'm just talking out loud I mean it seems conceivable that if reach a certain point where he is you know further down the depth chart where they may start saying we make sense to trade him right because he's not a special teams guy unless he's returning kicks and if they're not into him for some reason which again I'm not stating it that they're out on him but you know the signs aren't great right now that you know maybe it makes sense to move on now get he still has two years left on his contract some team might value that on the rookie deal and you can get a little bit more for than if you wait a year so uh and I think next year 2025 is when Adam Peters starts being more aggressive assuming Jaden Daniels looks the part this year and having an extra pick could help so yeah I I think I think the wide the range of outcomes is that far he could still start and maybe it reaches a point where trading it makes sense I you know it's just been a curious few days that it's gone this route and like I said you you I feel like when listening to these guys Dan Quinn in particular sure we all would love if they were a little more you know open with a few things but in general I don't sense that they're bsing us either and taking their answers for what it is they have not again whenever Johan comes up they're not saying oh no no don't worry about him he's great he's in the lineup it's all good we're just trying different things they're not saying that and again flat out today we're in the middle of the competition and then he sites off other people before he gets to Jan so uh yeah I think I think the was R outcomes is pretty significant yeah no for sure and I've actually been saying for a couple days like again not reporting just like connecting dots going I feel like he is more valuable to them at this point if this is how they feel as a trade chip potentially than a actual football player of course then people are screaming about uh you know oh then trade him for auk and I'm like you realize that if Adam Peters if he doesn't fit Adam peters's profile he doesn't San Francisco's not going to want him right so there's that uh but I'm sure someone out there certainly would he you know the commander for his bad as Ron and the Marty party were they weren't the only team that thought Johan doson was a first round pick uh what do we expect this weekend in terms of playing time not for doson uh Dan Quinn said that he's gonna play a lot as there are a lot of these other guys but um starting o line uh Jaden Daniels and some of the the big name starters on defense as I know that uh Dan and Mike McDaniel kind of compared notes on this so that they were both on the same page going into both the practice in the game yeah I think they've you know they were conservative last week sitting a bunch of guys Dan Quinn kind of made it sound like you know John Allen Bobby Wagner those kinds of guys may be out there a little bit more than they were or well those guys weren't out there at all but they might be out there but don't expect to see them long they're factoring in the Reps today combined with the snaps on Saturday so hopefully from their perspective they feel like they got enough out of those guys today to do you know to not have to do much more than you know put the group out there and give give him a series or two or something um and I would expect that to be the case with you know on the other side with teror in Sam Cosby Etc and in terms of Jaden I I don't get the sense he's going to play much more than one series I would I would think so but I you know I in other years I might think okay he's gonna go the the first half and then they'll turn it over but I don't know I'm not getting based on what Quinn was saying today and my just general sense I don't really think he's going to play a ton again they've liked what they're seeing from him he's you know playing and here's the thing also I will just say in terms of like people might think hey joint practices come on what's that that's pretty Bill even more than a preseason game maybe I think with Miami though is they were running their stuff like they were running cover zero and blitzing from different angles and like you know Jan I mean I'm sorry Jaden really you know had to figure this out and study it it wasn't just sort of generic across the board and I know kingsberry was was a big fan of that because he he doesn't want to wait until the season starts to to for him to to see it so the fact that that's happened could be even more incentive for the staffs to be like you know what he saw enough we we're good of course there is the other variable of Marcus Mariota deal dealing with what Quinn said was like a minor growing injury they're going to keep him out this week so not that that's a big deal or a factor but you know you're already dealing with potentially the backup quarterback missing a little time we know Sam Hartman's hurt too so you know I I think getting Jaden in and out is probably the course of action yeah for sure and then Driscoll and then uh it's the trace murly show what dreams are made of uh last couple minutes here with Ben standig uh on the Hoffman show of course Ben you can read his work in the athletic you can listen to the standig room only podcast as well and Ben one thing that you noted from practice today that you were keeping your eye on that actually caught my eye in Albert breer's uh notebook that he does breer's doing his training camp tour he was in Ashburn on Tuesday um and you know Brier is not out there every day obviously but he does have great relationships and so when he notes something small that is clearly from talking to someone and not from just watching with his own eyes I'm like perhaps that's worth sticking a pin in and you said you were watching Dominique Campton take a lot more snaps at linebacker which is what Brier said that there's a transition going and I was at first I was like I don't know he's been playing kind of dime linebacker the entire camp and I've I've seen him continue to work at safety as well but it seems like that the the shift or the ratio of work is shifting a lot more in the linebacker Direction what have you been able to to dig up reporting wise and what are you seeing on Dominique Hampton and maybe even anybody else who's spending a little more time where we don't expect them to yeah so I sort of followed up with what uh Breer said because he made it sound like hon was transitioning the linebacker whereas and I think you would probably agree like well you know Jeremy chin will play in the box at times when they go to a dime or whatever exactly and so he's essentially being a linebacker but not really so is that what we're talking about here and you know what I got was yeah it's still a guy in Hampton who's going to do you know multiple safety positions and play in the Box a bit you know he's a big guy 220 I think he's like 62 63 so he can do it but I do think there is something to them wanting to see him at linebacker you know if you recall last year Dallas had uh they lost Leighton vanderash pretty early and then they had another linebacker injury so they really had to dig into going with a lot of safeties and in defensive backs but they felt a little more comfortable doing it because they had some guys that they had already seen play some of this get some reps in the camp doing this and I think that's kind of what's going on here so Hampton was out there in the unit drills before practice started or you know before the the team practice uh started working with the linebacker so I don't think he he's not making a position switch but at the same time I think they're prepping to have you know a guy like that be able be available and you know we'll see ultimately what they do with their uh 53 player roster the ones I've been putting together I've only had them keeping four linebackers and that was before the Jordan McGee injury we don't you know he's out this week we'll see how bad that is ultimately his this knee injury but you know if you're keeping four right then you may need to have somebody else be able to fill in so I think this is covering their bases experimenting which they're doing across the board but yeah he's not he's not a linebacker but they are willing to see him get more rep at that spot either just in case or hey you know you never know good good reporting that's why we have been on that's why the athletic employs him and pays him money because he's good at the job he knows what to look for Bing Bang Boom uh Ben standy Commander beat reporter for the athletic Read's work there uh and don't miss The Standing Room podcast of course frequent guest not only with us but with Shen and and everybody else on our Odyssey stations Ben always appreciate your time enjoy the rest of your time in Miami most or as much of it as you possibly can in air conditioning yeah air that Anthony will do and then I have to remind Matt like oh hey by the way this thing has to happen so Matt um have you found the open for never read the comments are we gonna play um digital open roulette here with uh with me searching for the file and not being able to listen to it in a preview mode so it seems as though we might be playing a little bit of roulette I am trying to find it right now but it is a okay I'm going to I'm going to click I'm G to click a file and and we're GNA see what happens here um always NOP that's that's an old never read the comment segment that's that's not going to work this is how radio is made boys and girls let's see let's see we got what the way Tommy Shephard nope that's an old one apparently where I'm talking about Tommy Shepard that's that's no good you got you got any there there certainly are a lot of them that are labeled never read the comments oh you want to know what I think I know where Anthony puts things H this is this is fun I'm sure I'm sure we'll get comments on this let's see let's see please be in here please be in here not my beat no that's that's not it oh there oh wait hold on hold on I think I think I found it we tried to warn them they didn't listen yes every week the Hoffman show goes into the belly of the Beast we read those comments baby never read the comments all right once we get this thing started this is how it works you can watch parts of our show in fact you can watch the entire show on YouTube streaming live daily at the team980 but then we cut it up into nice segment siiz pieces and when we post them up on YouTube uh Craig Hoffman and at the team980 you leave comments we go through them we read them the ones that we think are either fun interesting entertaining terrible to respond to worthy of response something that El listens emotions from our oneperson panel that is me uh we read during this segment at 5:30 on Thursdays and thus here we go Matt any questions on the premise of the segment no I I I get it comment section is always where uh the most it's where hopes go to die Matt it's where most constructive criticism always is no it's and we're going to get to constructive criticism and a lack of constructive criticism in this segment in fact okay let's dive in uh with some thoughts on what has been the biggest story in command land this week and that is Jan Dotson status on the roster uh this one from 6rr Chris 723 oh how I've missed reading screen names 6rr Chris 723 says if we're putting Jan on the bubble hot seed actually feature him he played all those snaps versus the Jets and was targeted three times two which he caught the other was air mailed and he fell down besides that that the QB never looked his way on tape you can say well he wasn't getting open and that's where I pushed back he was open on a slant and a sit but the QB worked the other side of the field so how about we feature him versus Miami and see if he takes advantage of it then put him on the hot seat um here's what I would tell you Chris this is about way more than preseason game and this is where I think fans can get in trouble with their opinions on certain things when they judge it based off 100% of the data they have and by the way when I say fans I should include media here too I will mopa we can only judge based off what we see and what we hear and fans have the least information by Nature because they you guys can't go to the same amount of practices that we can as media but even then we are not in the meeting rooms we are not in whatever other situations we're not in the walkthroughs like we also can only watch one particular player and we get no replays versus them watching every single drill every single snap every single team rep every single individual rep on tape because if you think they just watch the team stuff no no they'll watch the individual drills they'll watch routes on air and if you're not doing the stuff you're supposed to there where it's impossible really for us from the sideline to have any real judgment unless you know the exact route and the exact time uh timing and the exact number of steps or whatever of that drill they know all that stuff and so if you just you're thinking that Jan is in hot water whatever whatever phase you want to put him in based off of the preseason game you are kind of missing the point this is based off a continuing uh lack of satisfaction with his performance in all aspects of training camp that is why he's playing all those snaps as opposed to hanging out with on the side being like La we are wide receiver 1 and two and everything is great so I yes is the ultimate test the game is it perhaps the biggest piece of information either a joint practice or a game absolutely and would I like to see Jan doson featured more if that's the case and and see what happens this weekend yeah I would but I also do kind of laugh I will say Chris you know if if Chris is correct and he was getting open regularly then fine but he's got to get open in timing he's got to get open exactly when he's supposed to and sometimes you're open on the back side of a play because the corner realizes it's the back side of the play and he's not really trying that hard so there's that but I do sometimes laugh it's like well wide receiver is never getting the ball and I'm like well part of his job is to get open so there's there's that and I think sometimes one of the issues that we've had with Jian or that they've had with Jan is when he gets open if you need to be open now getting open now doesn't help you you have to play with more urgency and that's an issue for doson um as for the rest of the wide receiving core Jordan Varan 6489 uh responding to the news that Martavis Bryant has signed with the commanders which of course he did uh and we were talking about you know what is a chance to make the roster and all that kind of stuff and uh Jordan makes what I thought was a very very good point I personally see the Martavis signing a little different I think his size brings a different look for Forbes and St juice for when they guard some bigger white outs in season if he stands out in practice and makes the team great if not he still provided good value and gave our Corners a look that no other wide receivers on the team can I think this is exactly right actually um in reading through the full comment because that two things can be true at once they can be taking a flyer to see if he can regain some level of form that he had as a rookie 10 years ago there's a rookie in 2014 it is 2024 he has not played since 2018 but if if he can regain that form and by the way he's in much better shape to do it literally he was 230 pounds last year on the practice squad in Dallas now he's down to 208 so he's back down to his his true playing weight his Fitness is high like he's ready to give himself a shot and who knows maybe he makes this team there's a physicality he plays with that that this team could use and a veteran Savvy perhaps just a maturity about him at his age and everything that he's gone through that if if that maturity is there this receiver room could use that he's oldest guy I think him and Crowder and I think he's older than Jameson Jameson has looked like he's the oldest guy in the receiving room since he was drafted uh but that's just the beard tucking uh but but Martavis is 32 years old but he doesn't have a lot of mileage on his legs uh because he hasn't hasn't played but we saw it on a screen pass the other day like he locked onto a corner and drove him out of bounds like he's a big strong dude and he's got really good speed so if he makes this team great but there are worse things you can have on your roster to prepare for practice squad purposes which is where he would ultimately go if he doesn't make the team like they will keep him around it sounds like to simulate CD lamb hey we need a big fast strong guy to run routes Martavis see see how this is drawn up on paper go pretend your CD lamb and go do it okay cool uh all right this week get your get your LeBron shoulder shoulder uh get off me uh mindset because you're AJ Brown now like that's really really beneficial because well let's say Bryson Chaine would be the guy to to do that is the only other guy who's over 6'2 on this roster if he makes the practice squad he's a 46 guy he plays faster but he certainly doesn't play 43 so if they can get a guy who plays that big that fast that strong even if he can't really execute their offense on the level that they want to at least be a practice squad guy like there is huge huge huge benefit to that so I thought that was a good one by Jordan continuing on never read the comments uh our guy Glenn Smith 491 frequent viewer and commenter uh talking about Emanuel Forbes I thought this was interesting uh he said what freaks me out about Forbes is that his weaknesses are what I thought would be his strengths and his strengths are what I thought would be his weaknesses for example he has shown poor ball skills but solid cover skills uh Emanuel has actually done a really good job in underneath coverage and what I would tell you is it's actually not surprising I think the lack of ball production is really surprising but part of what made him I think special in college is it's not like he's picking off a bunch of deep balls hey it's 40 yards down the field Go Up High Point it get it right um and I think of a guy like Diggs a couple years ago with Dallas like teams targeted him and he gave up a ton of yards but he also got picks because he was really good in those situations and not all of his picks came that way but but he had more than a few Forbes is a guy that would jump a lot of stuff like his quick twitch I'm dropping I'm dropping I'm in my Crouch like I'm getting now plant my foot and go and jump a route is excellent and I think what's happening is some of those same recognition skills and some of those same like quick twitch change of Direction skills are on display but things are happening a little bit faster right and so if it happens a little faster you in college you were able to jump that route now you're a half second slower relative to the play and it's not that it's actually a bad play but you're not going to pick that off you're just going to make a tackle upon impact or maybe you punch it out you can't get a clean read to to jump it so I think some of that is happening with Forbes the thing is though he has got to stop giving up the big vertical stuff and so the fact that he's real sticky underneath I think you know not to say like Glenn you're correct Glenn the commenter you are correct but I do think that is because the expectation maybe was wrong maybe that's on us as the media for not selling you know or properly painting the picture but I I I do think that's the expectations being off not opposite uh in terms of things have switched that said the ball production needs to show up because you can't like I what Dan and and Joe Whit Jr showed even in Dallas with the guy like Diggs is if you give up a bunch of yards but you turn the football over we can live with that if all you if you give a bunch of yards and you don't turn the football over now we got problems um that was kind of what St juice was last year it's like yeah really good on a on a bunch of plays sticky underneath no ball production gives up one or two big shots or give two big chances a game can't live like that in the modern NFL uh shinku hug wow this is a Matt this one's a doozy this one's you have the sheet in front of you shinku haken I believe no that was definitely not right hadoken sh yeah because there's AOK Shinu shinku hadoken shinako haduken like do we think this guy's actual name is Ken at the end there or do we think this is a I don't know I think we spent too much kind time on uh this guy's screen name I don't know maybe uh leave another comment with uh the origin of your screen name yeah Shinko hakuin if you uh hadoken if you if you watched ever read the comments and you made it this far um tell us how to say your name voila uh anyway that guy or lady says I love Jan I do I still think he can be a wide receiver one in the league just going off his rookie year and his college tape but if he doesn't fit the scheme trade him for auk now I said this earlier in the show but I'm based off how our listener data Works chances are a very few of you were listening U an hour and a half ago so I'm going to say this again uh and let it live for posterity in in all of our digital platforms if Jan doson is not physical enough big enough strong enough to play for Adam Peters in Washington why the hell do you think San Francisco would want him like I it is one of the most annoying things that sports fans do is just assume that their trash will be someone else's treasure and I'm using the the colloquial phrase here I'm not actually calling Jan doson trash to be very very clear but then if if oh hey well that guy we want to trade him that other team's definitely going to want him and we get the thing that we want voila it's perfect and I can even hear saying but San Francisco wants a wide receiver in return that's the hold up in the trade yeah they don't want just any wide receiver you can't slap an 83 on me and be like hey we got you Craig Hoffman like that's not how that works they want something specific and San Francisco is a team built more than any other team in the league on toughness they are built on being physical and kicking your ass two years ago every single team that played San Francisco lost the next week because playing them left that kind of Hangover on you and so if Jan Dodson part of the problem here is it s i mean what standig was was talking about earlier and what beitch said earlier in the week like there seems to be like an effort kind of thing but if you just BL it off the tape and look at what his problems were last year and some of the problems that he's had this year in Camp there's a lack of physicality to his game that is why he doesn't seem to jive with what they're building here and if you think that San Francisco is going to trade for that you have lost your freaking mind or you just didn't have an understanding of the San Francisco 49ers in the first place and if you're just a commanders fan I get that you don't need to feel bad about yourself I just I will tell you now I'm sorry to burst your bubble the ners don't want Jan doson they just don't and so could they trade him somewhere else are there teams that would probably love to have Jan doson yeah absolutely is that potentially like I don't know is there a three or four team trade something that we'd see in the NBA that somehow winds up at Jan doson trade for Brandon auk uh maybe but I don't I don't think the commanders are going to wind up with auk and I don't think the 49ers are going to wind up with doson if they want to play receiver musical chairs sure but I I still think auk is going to be a Niner or a stealer and I'm very sure that he's not going to be a commander and I'm even more sure that Jan dodson's not going to be a 49er in return for uh Brandon I in that trade so sorry to burst the bubble this is the end of your Jan doson uh trade fantasy I don't know do they have uh you know in the NBA uh they have the trade machine uh Matt because we you have to do the salary matching is there an NFL edition of the trade machine I don't know but you got to think Brandon iuk cler was one of the top five wide receivers in the league he was a second Team all pro I mean he was fantastic and people are talking about trading him for a player that isn't necessarily even the second best on there would be draft pick compensation and all that kind there has to be yeah but I'm I'm tell what I'm tell what I'm saying is if Adam called his old boss John Lynch and was like I'll give you Dotson in a second for iuk Lynch would be like you're joking right not because the second isn't right it's the dots in piece yeah it's not a piece that they can be using in their system it doesn't work nope so stop doing that stop doing that okay that's that's the end of my Jan doson uh trade rant uh Cliff kingsberry uh we talked about how he is off to a hot start in training camp and well that's uh Not Unusual for Cliff kingsberry hot starts are kind of what he does uh isach uh 301 that's how I'm going to go with that that screen name pronunciation uh ISO 301 says feels like this is how he starts off wherever he goes give the guy an offseason SE him with the white board and a Sharpie only watch the magic or to only watch the magic happen more to your point about once film is out his offenses have sputtered down the stretch repeatedly let's hope that's not the case this time around absolutely and as I talked about uh in in the video that uh this comment was left on like the the hot starts great but a hot start followed by a traditional Cliff kingsberry late season collapse is uh is not going to work so the hope is that with Cliff this year just focused on the offense he has never been an OC in the NFL never that they can finish strong and he has the time and the resources and he's not dealing with head coach stuff to to Really lock in and I I think the other big part of this is I trust the other voices in the room as well I trust Anthony Lynn especially to to be a great quality control to Brian Johnson they like they have enough brain power to problem solve late in the year and whether that's due to teams getting tape and and making them uh Force different things uh or or change their emphases or or create new solutions to their problems or whether it's injuries that they have to work around whatever it is late in the season I trust that they have the brain power in that room I will say on a much less important note about this comment why do people talk about whiteboards and Sharpies use use a dry erase marker with a whiteboard if use a Sharpie on a whiteboard it's permanent that' be bad we need Cliff to be able to adjust maybe that's Cliff's problem maybe the pro oh my God Matt I just solved it they never gave him dry race markers they' been working with sharpies the whole time you got to you got to adjust oh my God I just you cracked the code get kingsberry on the phone now tell him to change his markers that's the problem uh last but not least a couple of uh fun fun uh comments Maddie uh we'll start with Bobby s417 talking about Jan doson maybe he should be putting his damn mouthpiece and then see if he's still dropping the ball uh I know his catch rate will go up how much we will not know until he grows up and does it first of all Bobby a period or like four would really help this comment this is reading that was very difficult to figure out where one sentence stopped and started um I mean and complaining about someone growing up and not using Punctuation is uh rich you can tell that Bobby is really passionate about it just because that was a stream of Consciousness yeah no and to the to the substance y'all get upset about the weirdest things he doesn't put his mouthpiece in that's why he sucks at football that's what Bobby's trying to say here he doesn't suck at football and has nothing to do with whether or not he can catch what are we talking about maybe that's why some people leave comments like this is because I call out nonsense like that um the millennial car guy I can say this word on the radio right I believe so yeah okay hopefully uh the millennial Car Guy uh says Hoffman comes off as a douche not likable at all to which I responded that's a personal opinion I actually think that the uh the funnier comment though is someone who replied to that with be careful with Hoffman he was on the Drake mayb band wagon real heavy before we picked JD one I've talked about this a lot this is not the most important thing actually probably is the most important thing that's not true and people that are saying that are the most annoying people on the internet uh so I was not real heavy on the Drake May bandwagon um I was very interested in learning more about all of the quarterbacks but I've gone on that rant many times the part the part of this that I find genuinely hilarious Matt be careful with Hoffman what does that mean what are you being careful of am I going to come to your house uh I don't know you got to be wary because you're going to give some real interesting takes hey DMV Bay 2535 boo like what do we be careful I don't know maybe it's because you're you went to Syracuse I I don't know maybe he went to Georgetown I'm trying to figure out some kind of a through line 552 and George down still never mind I don't want to get in trouble um be careful I like honest to God if you are if you have made it this far in this segment DMV Bay 2535 what be careful of what what do you think I'm going to do to you even if I proverbially metaphorically bite your head off on the internet whatever who cares also your opinion sucks boo when we get back it's our big six at six the six biggest story lines from the day uh in command land uh Washington down in Miami practicing against the Dolphins boo it's the Offman show on the team 980 I'm an idiot uh we're also live on the free Odyssey app [Music] a [Music] he [Music] he [Music] he he h [Music] he [Music] he he [Music] [Music] he [Music] he [Music] he [Music] he he [Music] he he [Music] he [Music] [Music] it's opman show we're on the team 980 always live as well on the free Odyssey app final hour here on a Thursday this has been one of those weeks where it's like man are we ever going to get to the end of the week oh wait it's Thursday already when did it get to Thursday but alas here we are it's Thursday and uh coming up at 6:30 got a listener email we we're only we're going to do this yesterday then we ran out of time but I got a listener email with some good questions uh in it commanders wise so we will answer them at 6:30 but at 6 o'clock on a commander training camp day especially one as important as a joint practice you know we got to get you caught up on the latest things you need to know it's time for a pick six at 6 the six biggest Commander story lines it is T delivered at 6:00 sharp it's the pick six at 6 we set out to find a leader someone who could take this franchise to the next level and build an elite team that consistently competes for championships all right the biggest thing that kind of came out of today really happened before practice and it was Dan Quinn's comments on Jan doson we want to let you hear it straight from the horse's mouth number one so Quinn was asked straight up by Sam forer what is the competition at wide receiver 2 like what are your thoughts on that where are we with that and the Commander's head coach responded by saying actually Maddie can I have you play these bites cuz I'm playing the other thing uh respond him by saying this I would say we are right in the middle of it and so um you'll see a lot of guys in today you'll see two three four five there's a lot of guys that are really battling I've been uh really impressed with alade and uh I thought he's had a really strong Camp U I'm looking forward to getting um Luke some extra work into here Jian uh diami so that's where we're at and then the Special Teams is going to have a factor in that as well so he mentions a lot of names there and I I do think that you know like standig was on with this earlier and he's like you know he said a lot of names in Jan last I think because the question uh had also been prefaced with some stuff about Jan that that's probably why he did it last but like he does name all those other guys first so Ben's not wrong to point it out and I think Alam zakus being mentioned first is because currently I think Alam zakus is number two on the dep chart I think it's Terry McLaren and then it's Alam zakus and I think that because on Tuesday when I was out there at practice and there was two receivers on the field in two minute which has been to me situationally that's when they've been like all right these are our ones as opposed to mixing it up like they have in some other stuff but like when they get to the situational work it has mostly been fairly consistent you know one one skill position group one quarterback one o line and the one skill position group if that was the case and it was cuz Terry McLaren was out there was Alam zakus out there now maybe that was a two-minute and maybe in the The Run of play uh or in other situations Jan would would be over him but lamade zakus right now I believe is number two on the wide receiver death chart that is subject to change uh it certainly could change this weekend if Jan comes out and has has a great day I think he had a couple catches today from what I I heard he had a bunch of catches on Tuesday so maybe the fire has been lit underneath him maybe maybe they're happy uh with the week that he's had if you can top it off with a great game maybe he rises right back up and maybe we've already hit the ner of Jan dodson's status but there's also a chance that we haven't and that we're looking at a long or maybe even short in terms of a trade again I don't think he's going to get cut but a trade is would seem possible uh based off of of how these guys operate so what does DQ ultimately want to see from doson yeah I think with all the guys that we were talking about at that spot um the urgency um The Run game the pass game so like you know the quickness in and out of breaks so not Everybody Plays the same spot Nikki but I do want to see with he and with all the other guys really finding some really competitive moments you know the plays after the catch the blocks you know at the point of attack um sometimes even in manto man during this phase of evaluation did he beat the person even though the ball didn't go to that spot so um I'm really trying to evaluate them with and without the ball I really chuckled internally when I heard Dan Quinn's answer on that for the simple reason that he was trying to be generic in his answer and named all the specific things about Johan toson uh the urgency is something that Logan has been talking about going back to last year when he watched Jan play on tape in Eric benmy system that well yes there's a bunch of problems with that from top to bottom like Jan within the system could have played a lot better if he played with a lot more urgency talks about the blocking talks about the physicality talks about you know on and off the ball I think all that stuff is exactly what he wants to see yes from everyone but the reason it's top of Mind in that order is cuz Jan doson hasn't done it to the level that they want which is why we're in this situation in the first place and so that I thought was all very interesting uh we will see ultimately uh how this how this continues to play out uh but th that's the rubric now we get to all uh grade Jan and more most importantly they get to grade Jihad on it number two all right second up in our pick six at six uh more from the wide receiver room as they uh bring Martavis Bryant in of course Byron Pringle brought in last week as well but he just kind of slots in as another one of these guys has a little bit of speed um has some playmaking ability like we saw it last year and and we know what he is um so what does DQ want to see from Martavis and will we see Martavis Bryant on this short turnaround on the field on Saturday uh we do we'll see where we can Nikki and much like Trace to say what plays can we do and so the easy thing there is as you're getting to it say these are the you know handful of plays that you'd feel comfortable calling with he and Trace in and that way they can perform fast too because that's important for us we're not going to put a guy out there that's not ready to compete and perform so uh if the package can be learned by Saturday in a very small amount then we'd be willing to do that for sure I have a hard time thinking that he's not going to be on the field on Saturday uh for the simple reason that if he's on the field in practice there's got to be some small package of plays where they can get him out there and and be useful um I mean it's kind of as simple as that and I think I think that even if he's not getting a lot of targets um if he is uh you know just blocking like he's a guy that has shown already like what he can do in terms of size speed uh makes makes a catch or two uh in practice the other day and the play that really I've talked about this uh already today but the play that really sticks out to me is he like latched on to a corner on a screen and so if he can be an effective blocker and we just talked about all that stuff with Jan in in the Run game and in the in the pass game in the screen game like if bavis Bryant can just be out in front of let's call him Jan doson on a screen and and let them have what they want in terms of physicality and size like that's useful throw them out there hey Martavis you're gonna you're gonna have five plays today uh know these five plays and when you call those five plays make sure that 888's in the game and that's up to Cliff and Bobby Ingram to deploy them at the right time um so yeah I I I would be surprised if there's not a small package of plays it's probably not going to be a ton but also like I don't know man Trace murly got there to Miami last night and I know Trace played for uh Cliff back in in Era izona but if if they're going to give Trace murle probably an entire half of football as a quarterback how many freaking plays are going to be in can Martavis Bryant not learn most of them I I have a hard time believing that so I think we'll see 88 that's that's the point number three uh speaking of Trace murle uh he was signed because Sam Hartman's hurt turns out as standing first reported last night the Marcus Mariota is banged up as well so what is uh the state of the Commander's quarterback room behind Jayden Daniels sure so we'll start we start from the injury-- wise with uh Sam so um not able to play in this weekend's game and so um Marcus also had an injury of a groin it's not long I think if this was U probably in the regular season this would be a guy who would want to go through that that's not the correct decision at this time for him so with both uh quarterbacks who will be down um for the game we thought it best to add to that and uh we're fortunate that Trace was available and uh flew in last night and uh physical this morning so um let's go but here we'll uh build in some plays so um as we got you know to the game there would be some ones that he'd feel comfortable with so uh that's where we're at there I do think it's important to remember then as we evaluate everybody else on the offense on Saturday night in the second half or whenever it is that murle place that they're dealing with a very limited Playbook um and again this is why I think like you can get Bryant out there because can you just treat uh or or teach Bryant and murly basically the same group of plays and when murly takes the field like that's what you got um and it's worth noting that I I saw one of the reporters tweeting that after practice murly was working with Bryan so like he's trying to get that extra work in as as any guy in his position should and one of the guys that's helping him is the new wide receiver who's kind of in the same position I mean Bryan has a chance to make the team murly does not he's here to be Sam Hartman's backup he's QB 4's backup but at the same time like if he impresses like would they put in a good word for him elsewhere would they potentially keep him on the practice squad just have another quarterback in the room if they like his brain uh maybe who knows all right uh as for the quarterback that we all care about far more for the long term all due respect uh to the local product in Chase Chase murly but we all know Jaden Daniels is is where we have our eyes and once they got into the actual practice Jaden Daniels was absolutely killing it uh the Miami reporters it was fun because I follow a bunch of them I used to do some work uh for our sister station down there or what used to be our sister station I don't think it it is anymore anyway uh I used to work do some some shows down in Miami and following some of the reporters that I I used to follow down there they were like man this rookie is insanely good and uh it definitely started with the first period which was a Red Zone period where Jaden Daniels at one point threw not one not two not three not four but five straight touchdowns that is hard and he definitely impressed a voice that'll sound quite familiar because it involve or it uh belongs to new Dolphins Corner old Commander's Corner Kendall Fuller a chance to see their rookie quarterback and Jaden Danel your thoughts on the young fell um I like him man just is I haven't watched the tape yet but just how he carries himself he looks like Pro looks like he has an edge um look like he trusting his ability a lot um I mean true even just looking on YouTube social media I heard about him checking a play in the first preseason game and to be able to have that confidence as a rookie to go out there and play football because at the end of the day a lot of times you rely on x's and those and then sometimes you just got to play football so I'm excited to compete against him on Saturday and hoping that he has a a good future uh that sound courtesy of Nikki javala at the Washington Post all right uh as for the rest of practice today and what they were trying to get out of it number four Dan Quinn talking about uh what I thought was interesting kind of setting the parameters of the practice and why reminding us I think again why these joint practices are so beneficial in three two and Matt's computer is is giving him no it's a great uh question because in the preseason you actually want to put people into the hardest looks and the hardest matchup so uh there's times you'll want to do some things just to you know put some stress onto a call or to a person in a coverage or um whatever that might look like and so to see you know the different elements offensively defensively on teams uh I think it's a great test and these are at practice um perfect times to do that and play man-to-man coverage play a zero Blitz look play things that maybe you wouldn't normally do just to you know really emphasize the stress and the evaluation of that play or that player so um I am really in favor of these practices I think they make a lot of sense and uh having to do it one day then the day off and then the practice um it really times up well you'll see some players get a lot of reps today and then not many in the game and then some very few today and get a lot in the game and all Al there's a good selling point for that for the player that's going to get few today uh Saturday's coming and you get a chance not only to perform for our team but potentially for 31 others to show what you can do and so I think there's a lot of value in that I think that's really cool Insight from Quinn not only because it's pretty clear that end part there right like they're getting their top dogs ready for the regular season today in practice right that's what today was about because they don't want those guys on showcase for everyone else they want that to happen behind closed doors where other teams can't see it and they want to to get good on good work to get as ready as you can for the regular season because those guys are going to be on the team and there's going to be a bunch of dudes that are going to play this weekend that are going to get a lot of minutes that aren't going to be on the commanders and if another team wants to go sign them like Dan Quinn and Adam Peters will be like hell yeah we'll write you a letter recommendation go on like be great we we don't want to hold you back but we just don't have room for you here and so the the Showcase part of it is one thing but I I I really appreciate the beginning of that answer because it gives us the kind of insight that reminds us why these practices are so valuable which is if you get burned in practice like it really like it sucks but there's no consequence so you don't lose a game you don't start down seven nothing on on week one because you you got burned in a practice because you played a coverage that was maybe not uh the smartest one but you kind of wanted to see if the guy could do it and so I think that's actually great uh not just like something that's a great evaluation tool and and self- teing Tool if you will right it teaches them about their guys but it's also a really great reminder for us that like if a guy is a what looks like especially let say a defensive back a really bad day in practice sometimes it's by Design sometimes it's because they are giving that guy the hardest possible test and if he passes it we probably don't think twice about it from the outside because we're like oh what hey that the ball never even went there we don't even think about it right but if all of a sudden guy gets three and I'm not saying like actually let's excuse everything that's happened to Emanuel Forbes the entire camp but guy gets three four balls completed on him maybe they know they can't actually put that guy in that situation in in the regular season and certainly against a Terry McLaren caliber receiver they would never leave St juice or Forbes on an island like that they wouldn't play that coverage in that situ situation but they're they're testing their limits and I think that's something that I've I've really come to appreciate about quarterbacks especially veteran ones that I've covered over the years and other ones that I've heard talk about it is like sometimes the best quarterbacks will throw five picks in a training camp practice because they're trying to see what they can get away with like oh okay this plays new to me I've never run it against this coverage can I fit this ball in this window nope okay note to self don't throw that one let's not throw the slant here let's not throw that second level dig because I can't get it over the linebacker uh not this coverage not with that play not with this timing not to that receiver whatever the the Myriad of circumstances might be but it's practice that's what practice is for and so I I think that's a really interesting and great quote from Quinn because it's a reminder that yeah today they were going to make certain guys go one-on-one with Tyreek hill and in Mike Sor Still's case he did fine would they do that in a game without knowing no would they do that in a game with knowing no because it's it's a game of odds but at least they know like hey Mike sander still can go one-on-one with Tyreek Hill like that opens up our options from a coverage standpoint maybe allows us to bring an extra Blitzer because we can trust him on the back end so there's a lot of stuff that you learn about yourself and you can do it in these joint practice settings especially because you get to see some different Personnel the other team doesn't know you as well as you know yourself two weeks into Camp etc etc okay last two things real quick in our pick six number five uh the one thing that i' I've found very interesting is that this defense in training camp has not created near the number of turnovers that we thought Dan Quinn asked today about creating more with his secondary yeah it's it's important and I think it's it's every day talking about it thinking about it at the spot in practice you have to is this one I can go take a shot on or do I have to stay on top of and so having the discipline to do that over and over again in uh it's something that you need to work on and so for me the tackling and the ball Hawking defensively is a big piece just like breaking tackles and you know ball secur on offense so those two things are always kind of at the front of my thinking and lots of examples that I show to the team um they come from those two topics a lot you got to think eventually there's going to be a breakthrough eventually they'll start creating them or they won't all year long and none of these dudes will be here next year not none of them but you you get the point all right last but not least numbers one of the guys that uh is in that secondary but maybe was spending a little bit of time out of that secondary and and I mentioned this yesterday which wanted to bring it back um Dominique Hampton fifth round pick big old hos safety but playing a lot in the box and Albert Breer had a note in his notebook when his from his trip to Ashburn on Tuesday that they're converting him to linebacker and I was like I actually don't think that Breer heard that correctly because I've seen him playing safety all Camp long uh but he's playing this kind of dime linebacker role where there's one linebacker you know by number by by trade if you will on the field Frankie louu Bobby Wagner whoever and then you have Hampton and you know two other safeties and three corner like Sr still is out there like but but Hampton's playing in the box and it's kind of this hybrid role and so I thought it was interesting this morning when Ben standing was like oh he's he's in some of the linebacker drills not that those skills don't translate so it would makes sense too so I asked standig when he joined us at 5:00 for not my beat what's going on there here's what Ben had to say yeah so I sort of followed up with what uh Breer said because he made it sound like anthon was transitioning the linebacker whereas and I think you would probably agree like well you know Jeremy chin will play in the box at times when they go to a dime or or whatever exactly and so he's essentially being a linebacker but not really so was that what we're talking about here and you know what I got was yeah it's still a guy in Hampton who's going to do you know multiple safety positions and play in the Box a bit you know he's a big guy P2 I think he like 62 63 so he can do it but I do think there is something to them wanting to see him at linebacker you know if you recall last year Dallas had uh they lost Leighton vanderash pretty early and then they had another linebacker injury so they really had to dig into going with a lot of safeties and in defensive backs but they felt a little more comfortable doing it because they had some guys that they had already seen play some of this get some reps in the camp doing this and I think that's kind of what's going on here so Hampton was out there in the unit drills before practice started or you know before the the team practice uh started working with the linebacker so I don't think he he's not making a position switch but at the same time I think they're prepping to have you know a guy like that be able be available and you know we'll see ultimately what they do with their uh 53 player roster the ones I've been putting together I've only had them keeping four linebackers and that was before the Jordan McGee injury we don't you know he's out this week we'll see how bad that is ultimately his this KNE injury but you know if you're keeping four right then you may need to have somebody else be able to fill in so I think this is covering their bases experimenting which they're doing across the board but yeah he's not he's not a linebacker but they are willing to see him get more reps at that spot either just in case or hey you know you never know good stuff from standex so much good stuff uh if you missed it earlier check out the Hoffman Show podcast uh start of hour two or we'll put that up as a separate episode uh and if you're got an email uh as I do sometimes if you'd like to email the show you can go to Hoffmans show.com there's a contact page uh sometimes I get nasty grams there and I typically sometimes I'll respond to them uh saying thanks for listening sometimes I get in my feelings and I I I actually respond uh mostly I just delete them uh but I also do appreciate the thoughtful emails like this one from Eric uh he says hey Craig love the show can't wait for the season to start and hear you guys cover it my questions are towards the bottom if you want to get straight to it and uh respectfully Eric we are going to get straight to those questions because I thought they were interesting uh Maddie you get to you get to jump in on these two um because they're they're fun all right so the first question is actually I think the most it kind of It kind of goes into or I guess all three of them go together together what does it mean to be a commander Now versus the past especially given the roster turnover what do you think Dan Quinn and Adam Peter's vision of a commander is how do you think the one of 20 or one of 20 gold tag commanders draft picks uh or how do you think the the 20 I'm gonna just rephrase Eric's question because I I think he meant three of 20 how do you think the gold tag Commander draft picks which were saner still Newton Daniels can be this year um to me the first two parts of that question are the most interesting which is what do you think it means to be a commander Now versus the past and and that obviously goes with what do you think Dan Quinn and Adam Peter's vision of a commander is I actually think it cuts to the core of kind of some of the past issues with is which like let's even let's even not go like full history but let's just go Rivera era what did it mean to be a commander for Ron Rivera I'm not being factious I'm not being snarky I don't think that there was a clear-cut answer and it's really hard to find something if you don't know uh what it is if I go Matt I need you to go outside and find me a Whatchamacallit and you're like what what's a Whatchamacallit I'm like I don't know you'll know it when you see it it's going be really hard for you to go outside and find a Whatchamacallit nevertheless a doohickey or a thing ofama jic but it for Ron like I think at times he had certain things he was looking for like I don't know they drafted Jam in clearly they were looking for size speed strength when they drafted Jan they didn't care as much about that when they car drafted Forbes they didn't care as much about that speed I guess was was supposed to be a thing um we heard the term position Flex a lot um but they overlooked for that were to the point that they didn't find players who could actually play one position nevertheless two or three yeah it seems like they wanted every player to be a little bit of a Swiss army knife right everybody if there somebody went down you know what who cares our tight end could be quarterback it was that kind of right but like that's the thing right is a Swiss army knife is a great in case of emergency tool that can do an okay job at everything well there's a reason why they sell Swiss Army knives in gift shops cuz they're not real knives right and if you wanted to like if you're stuck in the woods and you're you're living off the land because you got stranded after a plane crash yeah Swiss army knife is nice but if you're cooking if you're eating a filet in your kitchen that's not what you're going to use to cut your steak congrats on Surviving the plane crash by the way yeah good job yeah um so I I think that when you think back to like Jay's era there were certain things that I think he knew and like that was actually what made mclan exciting for the five minutes that he was here and doing a good job was he knew like toughness and like physical imposing power was what he wanted and that's why he drafted Brandon Sheriff where he did overdrafted sure but with a purpose and a point and then he got so flustered by uh the guy that he wanted uh Ryan Kelly going uh in the the next first round that he drafted uh uh Josh dachon and things were Sideways from there um if they weren't sideways already based off some stories that you hear about that offseason and and how everything was rolling so point being like they didn't have a cohesive vision of what a commander is now it's someone who is smart it's someone who has High character not just football character but like is a good person it's someone who is a leader it's someone who is has unless they are exceptional in other ways see s or still Mike they are big for their size like or sorry big for their position like they they value positional size um and so it's really like a list of five or six things and you have to check four or five boxes and I think that you know like for jayen is he he's not small in terms of like he's six foot4 but he's thin but he's fast and he's smart and his leadership skills are are outrageously good like there's so many other things he checks the other boxes so emphatically that you look past the one thing saying we're still same thing okay he's under sized but his movement skills are so incredibly High his leadership is out of control good he's a tone Setter he's smart like he's he plays with physicality you must play with physicality cuz he even Jaden at the slight frame that he's got like one of the The Knocks is that he would like fling his body everywhere and you're like dude stop slide and so but he played with a physicality that was imposing to other teams and his speed is imposing and so I think having a vision for what you want in a player generally and then position by position or or even more accurately perhaps Matt Roll by roll means you actually go out and get it if I send you outside for a thing ofama jig and don't Define it you're not going to find one but if I say hey Matt I need you to go find me a yellow leaf uh you can walk outside and and I don't know if you'll have any luck in this part of the year but if we do it in the fall you can you could be back inside in 45 seconds I think it's also important to bring up you're right there's like four or five things but one of the things that I've seen throughout practice from the past couple years and given it's preseason it's a very long season and depending on what our final record is the energy could be different but right now what it means to be a commander 105% at all times I'm on the field I'm running I'm not jogging I'm not just kind of moping about I'm getting to the line of scrimmage I'm doing my work I'm actually putting in the effort and that's something that I didn't see for the past couple years no and I think that you know I was reading I think it was breer's piece um it was one of the National guys that stopped through and I I'm I'm almost positive it was Breer and he described John Allen as a Mal content in recent years for good reason and it's because like JN knows what it looks like from the Alabama days to play at that level to to give effort at that level and if you are constantly trying to drive that as a leader but you're the only one like it's one thing on a basketball team it's 12 to now I guess 17 18 guys with the 2A guys whatever right it's much easier for one person to drive your culture on on a roster that small you can't have one John Allen and not saying he's the only one right Terry I think would have would have been similar in categorically and you know a guy like Don who played at Alabama as well like you you can't just have John Allen out there being like I play so freaking hard in practice and I'm giving it my all and expect that to to rise everybody you can't drag everybody against their will you need it to come from on High where it's like there's consequences if that doesn't happen and so I actually really appreciated that and I think it's why John Allen and actually the point of breer's sentence there and paragraph there was he was saying like there's been great buyin from guys like alen that have become leaders of the culture and what Dan Quinn wants to do because they're so heavily bought in so I think that's a great Point by you like that 105% like the we are doing everything with a purpose one of the words that's come up a lot is intentionality I think that's the difference in in what it means to be a commander Now versus is what it has meant in the past and as a result to answer Eric the emailer third question um you know how good do you think the gold tag guys will be I think sand still is gonna have a very solid year he'll have his moments same thing with Jaden Newton I'm a little less high on just because he can't seem to stay on the field and I'm a little scared that they that he he might just be battling stuff and he might need a reset so either they're going to give it to him and he'll get out there and and eventually it'll be later than we want but he'll play and play well because I think he's talented and can play well from jump based off his position um and what they're going to ask him to do or uh or it could be a very painful year uh for hopefully not too literally for Jon Newton all right uh that is a question from listener Eric uh who emailed us which you can do at Hoffman show.com click on the contact page fill out the form send your question maybe we'll answer it on the air maybe I'll send you an email in return maybe maybe I'll do both uh when we get back we wrap up the show real things real people said into real microphones [Music] he he [Music] he [Music] [Music] he h [Music] he [Music] he [Music] he [Music] he [Music] it's Offman show we're on the team 980 always live as well on the free Odyssey app uh mattes great job today sir uh in for Anthony Toby ier in that chair tomorrow uh Matt so what we've what we started doing at the end of the show is we tell people our favorite part of the show from the day um because then then we're we're running out of show here as as you know and U with all due respect to our friends at bmgm tonight you know unlike when when you guys are done between one and four and it's like hey Craig's next just listen to Craig it's more local Sports Talk they have they have the national show uh and that's that's great if that's what you want you want to get caught up on everything keep podcast on on your Apple carplay or or your Google cplay or whatever other playing you do with your car um and and you can listen to our our shows podcast and we would like to give people a specific recommendation our favorite thing from the show today so Matt what did what was your favorite part of the show today I think that my favorite part of the show had to have been our early conversation with Steven Goff um we don't get to talk a whole lot about soccer on my normal show and with Russell's Russell's not uh proper footballing he's not really in it but with the fact that they just had to get rid of their coach managed to go to the Olympics win a medal so it seems like the men's soccer is on the up moving forward being able to hear about their new program and how they are getting into like the future of the US Men's National Team I I was really interested in seeing like because I don't know enough about him so being able to hear a little bit more about his experience where he was where he was managing or coaching yeah I mean yeah it's interesting yeah so men men did not medal at the Olympics um and also that's bronze no they uh they did they did not make it that far Morocco won the bronze uh at at the Olympics um but they did they did have a couple of nice performances um obviously the the men's program uh and the men's Olympic program is a little bit different with the being the u23s and everything but um certainly it was a better result uh than they had at Copa America with the full team so there's that um but yeah getting to learn a little bit more about Mauricio pontinho and why US soccer coveted him uh that was at 4:30 with gof I think my favorite chat standing was awesome today um Ben's always really good um but he had so much detail on some of the stuff from practice and some of the kind of ongoing story lines and kind of the the chat about the range of options for Jan doson right now standig five o'clock uh start of hour two uh just go to the Hoffman Show podcast uh and and Matt I will give you a bonus opportunity here quickly uh what was your favorite thing from the Russell show today people would like to listen to the some some of the podcastage from the Chris Russell show oh uh I think the best thing from the Russell show today Michael Phillips joined us always great one of our favorites there was specifically one quote that he said about Jan doson in specifically when he broke down the fact and I think you've mentioned it too that twice this week people have asked about wide receiver to twice he's brought up another player behind Johan Dodson and Michael Phillips pointed out hey if you're not being brought up as your number two Guy this is no longer like hey you might have a problem there's issues right 100% uh yeah Phillips is great always always very clarifying as well uh so check that out in the Chris Russell show feed uh all that's available in The Odyssey app and all your favorite podcast platforms okay the other way we end the show is uh this we've been doing it from day one real things we're not going to be suck this year real people 5 and 11 not very good set into real microphones you know the culture is actually damn good all righty then uh we got uh Olympic champion Gabby Thomas uh is is our real things uh nominee for today um Gabby was on the Today show I believe it was and was talking about uh how much she runs which for many of you I think will be a surprise at how how little she runs I mean the furthest I will run is one mile that's it yeah we do a mile in the fall it's a gut check so we do it to to tap into your mental sides can you finish a mile and I know that's funny because that's where you guys are like oh a mile no it's really difficult for us so is it because for that short amount of time you're just your jets are on and so try to sustain that it's a different type of training training for the sprinting it's completely different um so we don't get a lot of that that mileage in so one is enough for us all she's got to do is run 200 meters and she got to do it really fast and then like she'll run in the relays at a 400 which by the way is so the 400's so gross let hey Sprint a quarter mile cool got it it's easier when you're that fast because it takes less time but I I remember you saying bolt once saying he never ran a lap forget a mile which is four laps around the track he never ran a lap and he's the fastest 200 met guy ever and it's just different like you are doing power explosive movements versus can I sustain speed over time and it's just it's just different but that said what's funny Matt I don't know if people fully appreciate this is uh most people couldn't run a lap at the world like at the marathon pace that they run in the Olympics oh yeah it's a 67 second lap that is like most people are literally physical not capable of doing that for 200 M nevertheless 400 it's so fast I mean just a 67400 is pretty good that would be as fast as I could possibly run I would be gassed and embarrassed and probably still only hit like 70 seconds maybe Max yeah it's um turns out Olympians are good at what they do that's a that's breaking news right there yeah I still think the sickest thing going in track and field right now like Mondo Duplantis is obviously great the P Vault and everything but Sydney mcglaughlin Le levone running a time in the 400 hurdles that would have just missed the final of the 400 open is the most grotesque amazing unbelievable feat in track and field um she also ran I think it was like the third fastest split in the open 400 ever in the relay it was like 477 disgusting anyway that's our show for today we'll see you tomorrow have a good one go listen to our podcast if you want more yapping
