in the conference offices well certainly I think success with consistency comes success but what I appreciate about our schools is although we have turnover um the talent that we've been able to bring about so here is Terence Newman previewing the wolf pack boisey State and UNLV the wolf pack predicted to finish 12th out of 12 Terren uh the pack as you well know as all our listeners likely know four and 20 the last two seasons backtack two and 10 years a coaching change Jeff Cho is now in charge he is speaking of the launch that is just minutes away here from the season opening kickoff at home against SMU give me some optimism for the silver uh I'll give you some optimism and the optimism's first name is Jeff and the optimism's last name is Cho okay I'm a fan of Coach Cho you like this higher I'm a fan of Coach Cho and the excitement of the unknown you know I I'm excited to see what his offensive pH philosophy is I'm excited to see uh what his defensive philosophy is here's the thing it's going to be a rough year it's going to be a long year it's going to be a year of figuring things out and setting things up for the future you know um and so that's why a big part of the reason to be pessimistic is the roster still lacks overall Talent you know there you look up how can you know Terrence there's 50 some odd new players on the roster there are 50 some OD new players on the roster but I didn't know any of them from last year from where they came from you know there there might be and that's like like I said that's the excitement of the unknown that's what we're going to find out in these next few weeks is who are The Playmakers who are the and you know what some guys that we saw last year might look totally different this year because it is a different coach and it is a different system you know so maybe some of our evaluations of the talent of the guys coming back might be a little off or a little skewed because of the system they were playing in last year might not have been best for him so that's my reason to be pessimistic is just who are The Playmakers on the roster but I think there's a lot of reason to be excited just because there's a there's a lot of opportunity for growth uh with this team I think I like Jeff's coach coach Cho's energy I like the way he talks about the game I like the way he breaks down the game I hear him speak I get excited if I get excited then I know those kids are getting excited and I think he's going to be able to get those kids to play hard he's got that personality he he just seems like the type of Coach you want to run through a wall for so I'm just I'm excited to see EXA like I said what what what his philosophy is how this offense looks and um I think we're going to shock a few teams I'm not look I'm not saying the packs gonna win the conference but I don't think they're going to be Las in the conference either okay the team that was chosen predicted to finish ahead of the pack in 11th in the Mountain West the New Mexico Lobos who Nevada will not face this year unless it's in the championship game and that would be a shocker uh John I'm a uh I'm going tell you to save your money now and don't bet on that all right we're making our way through the Mountain West with Mountain West Insider Terence Newman ahead of kickoff opening day SMU at Nevada week zero here in macki Stadium on the budlight tailgate show all right you and LV they shook up the world last year they went to the Mountain West championship game they are predicted to finish second things are rolling right now in Las Vegas for the Rebels on the football side which is certainly a curiosity uh in our lifetimes wolf pack fans are G to love this because this is the one team that is going to disappoint folks oh they're over Rebels are overrated says teren I don't not understand how they are expected to come in second I'll give you one reason to be excited they got some all-americans I'll give you a reason to be excited they do return their top two wide receivers Ricky White the Third is a stud he's in the guy that I think is an NFL type Talent Jacob De Jesus all Newman team member one of my favorite players to watch in the pack or in the Mountain West he's just a Do-it all wide receiver um but we're we're we're glossing over the the biggest like question mark who's the quarterback did people forget the team struggled until jadeen mava took over once he took over that that's when that go go offense started to go Jaden mayaba is at USC right now they haven't announced they have not announced who their starting quarterback is how are you going to pick a team to finish second not the same league now but does that still matter to you guys coming into this season yeah we still take that Championship mentality to the next season and so forth and just remind ourselves that we are that defending Champions like we're not trying to be cocky but we want to be confident as well rolling into this game a lot of uh excitement around the program the ACC technically a little over a month away when you guys open up conference play are you guys having to block out a little bit of noise right now to get focused yeah it's a ton of noise like with the new facility the ACC joining that and then just you know the hopes and then the beliefs of other people and all that so coach lashy teaches us to just turn out the noise and just play football and just have fun so that's what we're doing at the end of the day August 24th earliest game in SMU program history I can't imagine you played much earlier either seemed kind of weird to get started this soon yeah yeah it was kind of weird especially going into fall Camp way earlier but it's like you know we got to make it do what it do our body's never going to be 100% but that's that's that's the point of football so Nevada's got a lot of change going on but they do have a big experienced quarterback they've got an experienced running back what do you expect to see from this Nevada offense today I expect them to use those Dynamic players as they should and for us to just stop them at the end of the day Nevada has some talented players on their team and we we have to go out there and execute our scheme and and just focus and be disciplined out there I see the green dot on your helmet you getting the onfield communication here tonight we'll year ago it's a new year but we talked about the other day you don't want everybody to forget all that right yeah it's a new year new team but I mean we're defending Champs you know and and we've worked a long time as a program to be able to say that there's I think 10 teams in the country that are going into this year being defending champs and none of that wins us a game or gets us a first down this year uh but hopefully it gives our program and our our guys returning confidence that we know what it should look like and what it takes um but I'm excited new team New Year excited to get started with these guys you have guys battle at every position through fall camp but of course the one to get talked about as your two quarterbacks Preston Stone Kevin Jennings and you did announce Preston as a starter on Tuesday this week what made the difference there you know I mean again they just both of them had a really good camp um as a coaching staff everybody sat down and both offense and defensive perspective and just felt like Preston earned the opportunity to be the starter again and uh it was a really good battle to the point that we believe in Kevin wholeheartedly and and he's going to play you're going to see him in the first half today so um our team has confidence in both those guys I think you saw that by them voting them captains and I think both those guys have confidence in each other and support each other well so we're excited to see both of them play Preston threw for nearly 3200 yards and 28 touchdowns and he didn't play in the last two games of last season what more can he do this year yeah I mean just continue to improve you know I think he started the the season last year as a guy who hadn't you know ever gone into the season as a starter and he just got better and better and and by the end of the year before he got hurt he was playing at a really really high level and so you know the challenge for him after missing the whole spring is you know can he pick up where he left off and um continue to make plays uh and do what he does and value the football and Lead our team and just help us put the ball in the end zone a lot of skill players back for you this year one new guy in the running back group thr brashard Smith what's he going to bring to that group um you know I think he brings a lot of explosive uh ability both as a runner and a pass catcher um he's a really good kick returner but um you know he's done a nice job the spring summer and fall learning the running back position and so I think when you you compliment him with LJ and Jaylen Knighton I think that's three really good different style players um but I think what you'll see of brashard is a guy who can run between the T tack he can get on the edge and he can catch the football those skill position players can't do much if the guys up front aren't doing much is this the best group you've had on the offensive line uh well that remains to be seen you know we got to get the season going I think athletically it has the potential to be um you know obviously moving to Justin to Center is a change um you know I think a guy like PJ Williams at left tackle is going to make us more athletic uh hopefully in a week or two we'll get Andrew shamble back we have Savon bird we have we have good depth and good athleticism so now it's a matter of finding the right Five Guys or or guys that'll rotate in and and just the right you know mixture of that group that'll click and and and come together as a unit like we did last year defensive line depth was also a huge thing for that group last year in so many phases some new faces in the starting lineup but do you expect a similar type of thing with all the depth I do I I really feel like we've we were a lot deeper this year than we were last year and and that was our strength on the defensive side last year I mean you know we got to see how guys play and Performing games but at least going into game one I feel like we have really two starting groups up front I feel like the guys the first four that run out there are obviously starters but I think the next four that come in are all starter quality as well um kind of similar to we have at receiver and so um and then we have probably two or three more that can still play so hopefully that depth will carry us week to week in game and throughout the season opening up here against Nevada with a lot of unknowns because they got a new head coach what do you expect to see with Jeff Joo taking over I expect to see a well coach team that's tough physical plays hard plays the right way they're going to have a lot of excitement you know they're going to believe in this new staff um they got a lot of new players off last year's team anyways a lot of transfers so it'll be a totally different group um and offensively defensively we just got to we got to settle in and see what they're doing you know I think offensively probably a lot of option football a lot of on balance a lot of QB run a lot of lot of things for our defense to have to adjust to and then offensively um you don't really know what to expect so got to see what their plan is and and learn how to attack it their their quarterback is an experienced guy Brendan Lewis you you saw him back in his high school days of bissa yeah Brennan's a really talented player for Melissa can throw it can run it that's what scares you the most is his ability to also run the ball whether it's design runs or or option plays or just scrambling and keeping plays alive and so we're going to obviously this defense is going to be as good as we have seen it in a long time but key number one for the Mustangs execute the tempo on offense after explosiv plays last year SMU had the 15th most explosive plays in all of college football with 134 of those now right after those plays you're going to see SMU try to speed things up they get a Long play they want to go fast to catch the defense by surprise get them on their heels but the key is to execute those plays after you start going Tempo we'll see how the Mustangs do that that's goal number one tonight for SMU uh this is an SMU team that wants to tackle well too that's key number two tackle well tonight on the defensive side teams just don't practice tackling like they used to the Mustangs played a lot of team they went live a lot they just didn't tackle a whole lot but that's not unusual and we'll see uh hopefully this SMU Team come out and take care of business if you watched Florida State and Georgia Tech earlier tonight you saw those two teams very suspect particularly early in that game in terms of tackling the Mustangs hoping to be very sound of the fundamentals tonight and it starts on the defensive side being able to tackle and this is an SMU team that did well in that area last year holding teams to 18 points or or fewer that was eth best in the country key number three for the Mustangs acclimate to game speed it's been 8 months since the Mustangs have played a game and you've got 20 plus transfers in including three new faces on that starting defensive line as we talked about tonight communication footwork Paramount talking with each other knowing where guys are supposed to be you've got to acclimate to that game speed and learning how to communicate all of that stuff is so important in a game one and we'll see how the Mustangs do it I did have a fourth key there dominate the line of scrimmage uh that just goes without saying we'll see how that goes from the first quarter to the last so Isaac Pearson he's a graduate transfer from the University of Texas and I watch this guy in Fall camp and he has quite the leg I think he could absolutely be a weapon this year for the Mustangs and you know even when he doesn't hit it clean it still goes a long way you kind of like that you know Hunter is not going to kick it clean every time I think Isaac Pearson's going to be an absolute weapon for the Mustangs this year I don't know that I've ever said that about an SMU punter they did not change their other kicker the place kicker Colin Rogers and that's a good thing after last season when he set a School record with 66 made Pats and with 20 made field goals he's already second in care P's made and in just two season he's six away from the record held by Eddie Garcia and has a left guard that's a red shirt freshman and a right tackle that's a red shirt freshman and I do believe they will go with Savon red as the running back on the first play they hand it to Keaton Crawford on an end round he fumbles it picks it up he's hit by Walker the back fi will be dragged out of bounds for a t gain at the 27 yd line by Isaiah wakia Isaiah world is their left tackle Tyson that's a nice run right there and uh you know you're going to see some quarterback power may see some quarterback counter tonight that's just a simple snap kind of a wildcat play there where you uh run a guy off right yard looking for a a cut toward the backside Mustangs have got to run fit well at the point of attack against this guy three receiv receivers left now four as dollars rather uh uh red will split out of the back field one receiver to the right Lewis out of the shotgun looks to his right side and he's off the mark on a slant intended for Jaden Smith incomplete the Mustangs are going to force to three it out yeah that's that Jaden Smith you were talking about just a quick slant over the middle on a third down and five play Mustangs in man coverage had good coverage not great coverage but that's a poor throw right there and that's why Brendan Lewis only threw for two touchdowns last year and completed about 56% of his passes he is anything but pristine in terms of accuracy three receivers bunched up right hand side one wide to the left and look to throw is Lewis has nobody goes with a swing pass right and that's going to go for a negative yardage uh sadon red caught it at about the 27 yd line and it was immediately wrapped up on the play is that alij Roberts all the way out there I think making that stop it is that's a really nice play behind the line of scrimmage three yards yeah and the one thing that you notice is that they've got some runs of six run of seven run of eight run of three right there uh this is a Nevada team with a couple of guys that a red shirt freshman that are starting at the guard and Tackle position they're playing a lot better than that right here pretty impressed with their tenacious ground game I can't even believe I'm using that description to describe them here in the first quarter Jonathan Jefferson in at defensive tackle along with Cory Roberson the ends Jafar I Harvey and Cameron Robertson second down and eight at the 44 for Nevada and the handoff is again to sadon Red just kind of push his way forward at the 46 pick up of about two yards and Jefferson and Roberson come out of the bottom of that pile it'll be third down and about six for Nevada that's a simple RPO right there little option play and now it's third down and six they ran the ball one time in a situation like this earlier on a third down they have not converted on third down yet this is a this is a tough position where they don't have a great quarterback who only completed about 50% of his balls last year uh we'll see what they call here third down and six at the 46 yd line for Nevada Braham goes motion to a slot right out of the shotgun looking to throw and Lewis some pressure is coming and he fires it way too far incomplete and he pays the price as believe it was Cory Roberson blew right through the center Andrew Madrigal and took him in to Brandon Lewis the quarterback and they're H to punt yeah Mustangs bringing some late pressure they showed cover three early right there they rolled the safety down they played man coverage and every time so far here in this first quarter that Lewis the Nevada quarterback has felt pressure he not only is not executed he's been terrible in those situations we'll see if the Mustangs don't keep doing that as this game progresses gesp to punt once again rodri Daniels Jr at his own 10 another high but short kick it's going to go to the far sideline at the 18 and die out of Bounds at about the 16 yd line SMU will have it with 442 to play and what remains a scoreless first quarter this is going to be the the third SMU possession and they don't have much to show for it so far 39 yards Nevada only 31 yeah and this is the second straight possession now that the Mustangs will have begun inside their own 20 and that's because of guy Gillespie who's a brand new punter for them both of these two teams feature new punters with their respective programs and uh this mustang team they've had their back against the wall and trying to find some Rhythm on offense yeah it's been uh shaky at best so far Preston Stone one of five 23 yards he was picked off on his first pass of the season um we we were talking about it during the break a moment ago on that last possession you know on third down and long he was able to buy time rolled out left in the pocket set a new spot had a receiver wide open and just missed him with Jake Bailey and he had time to set his feet and Bailey had enough space that had Preston Stone set his feet and taken just a another nanc still would have had time to hit Bailey unfortunately Stone didn't do that and just kind of mail it a little bit but still a good job of extending the play and let's see if the Mustangs can kind of get that ground game going uh with stone just being one of five field positions kind of hurt SM a little bit here opening the season on the road and we ain't going on the road for a while Scott not until October 5th is there road game four straight home games coming up at Ford Stadium beginning next Saturday evening Houston Christian 7 o' at Gerald J Ford Stadium followed by BYU TCU and then well on the schedule here it shows 10th ranked Florida State they going to be 10th next week after losing to Georgia Tech this afternoon by the way that Florida State game individual single game tickets as well as mini solid quarterbacks and both guys that back up could start for half the teams in the American right now well we're going to see the second one right now as Kevin Jennings will come on for this possession Rett Lashley told us before the game that he would play Kevin in the first half here tonight he's going to play him here on uh what their third possession of the game first down and 10 SMU from their own 16 yd line where scoreless late first quarter High snap he brings it down rolls to his right throws on the Run caught on an out here by brashard Smith at the 15 slips The Tackle to the 20 comes up right sideline out of bounds at the 25 a pick up at nine and that's the first conventional completion of the game so far for the Mustangs and here we are late first quarter I got to tell you I'm a little surprised we've gone to Jennings this early but you're right red Lashley says he wants to play both second down and one and hand off is to bashard Smith hole up the middle for a first down to the 30 tripped up at the 32 yd line that'll be a pickup of six on the play as Aiden seuli makes the tackle first down s this is as fast as the Mustangs at plat so far we finally got a little rhythm here after a couple of good plays first and 10 from the 37 brashard Smith breaks one tackle at the line of scrimmage spins to his left to the 35 and he'll be stopped after a pick up of three nice job by the Mustang offensive line simple Wham play right here just getting a little bit of Rhythm it's the first time that we've seen the Mustangs with any rhythm to this point Nevada kind of on their heels that first pass the first completion to the edge kind of loosen things up with the linebackers uh but Nevada has been playing extremely aggressively we'll see if the things don't use some screen action at some point during this drive they'll slow up a little bit brashard goes off Jaylen Knighton comes on second down and uh seven at the 35 for SMU Kevin Jennings to throw pressure's picked up fires it deep left side and on the outside shoulder Jake Bailey can't Spin and make the catch he was covered well by Katon Crawford it'll be third down it's interesting the Bata brought both backers that time both kind of came late I thought a little bit too late to be affected but Jaylen Knighton did a great job of picking up that Blitz where he needed to he got extended out there and did a really good job of butting and pressing and keeping pressure off of Jennings now it's third down and seven third and seven from the 35 for SMU five minut L scrimmage for NADA and they will bring him and Kevin Jennings flushed out to his left he's taken off to run at the 35 the 40 lowers his head and he can't make it through the tackle there of Keaton Crawford he'll be two yards short of the first down boy Jennings had him one-on-one at the 40 yd line I thought for sure that he would be able to Juke Crawford he just needed to make one move but Crawford formed him up the Texas transfer who's their best player in the secondary forcing SMU to send out the punter again Isaac Pearson will come on for his second punt of the evening 44 yards on his first one how good of a tackle was that by Crawford really good yeah he wrapped him up just stonewalled him there he did and Jennings is a good athlete but the secondary for Nevada is their strength back to return at his own 18 High snap goes over Pearson he goes back to the 17 picks it up he's in trouble he's hit he loses the football it's going to be picked up by Nevada they'll be tackled inside the 10 yd line I do believe a Mustang ended up with a football but it doesn't matter they're at the N9 yd line where they give it up to Nevada you know it was Jeff Cho the first year head coach for Nevada that said coming into the game that we'll about our team when the chips are down and when adversity strikes adversity has struck for the Mustangs forcing SMU to go to their number two quarterback and Jennings on drive three and now a bat snap on a muff punt SMU collectively two of seven through the air here it's gone anything less than perfect here in this first quarter for the Mustangs now we're going to get we're going to see SMU tested here early on in Nevada Shawn dollar will be the running back for Nevada first down and goal at the SMU 99yd line after the bad snap Brendan Lewis in the shotgun three receivers left one Lewis is going to hand this one off right and it is uh Shawn dallers going to the 10 and Out of Bounds at the 5 yd line that'll be a pick up of seven it's third down and goal Caleb branjour that Junior running back with a terrific block out of the edge he's a bu college and Morehead State transfer and he got out there and he not only blocked he almost pancaked a guy out there on the edge in the Run game they are not afraid to throw their bodies around these smaller running backs for Nevada third down and goal at the 5 yd line dollars is the running back to the right of Brendan Lewis on the right hash third and goal from on the SMU 5 Lewis taking his time at the line of scrimmage wants to throw looks left has a tight end wide open at the two and that'll be a touchdown Jace Henry boy that is a tough matchup for AJ Davis who came up he was one-on-one in the in the flat with the tight end on just a little bit of a an out a little tight end out play right there and AJ Davis went down mishap on special teams with the bad snap on a punt well they did and they were able to to cash that in for points and these are the little things that Nevada was a little bit concerned about coming in but you know from the word go I've been impressed with Nevada's uh ability to get aggressive making plays at the point of attack I thought that was a huge play to keep Kevin Jennings from getting that first down on that scramble by the safety I thought that absolutely made uh their quarter really I thought that was the play of the quarter for Nevada and then the very next play the bat snap to the punter the scoop and uh not score but they took it down inside the 10 and to have Nevada put that in the end zone man that was insult to injury right there for the Mustangs back to return the kickoff going to be brashard Smith along with rodri Daniels Jr bashard the Deep man at the goal line kill him to kick off minute 7even to go first quarter 7 nothing Nevada has the lead high kick short Smith will run under it at the 11 he'll come to the left hash at the 20 slips The Tackle there bounces out left side 25 looking to turn the corner at the 30 up the sideline to the 40 and he's tripped up at Midfield big return by brashard Smith on his first opportunity and you saw why so many people were so excited about Rashard Smith coming to SMU he can do so many things for he was a great Return Man for Miami but great job there getting to the Edge Let's Get More on bashard from Steve Lansdale on the S sideline you guys have been talking about what an addition he is to this offense he is to say he's fast is an understatement I've been talking to a couple people on the sideline and I was told he is the fastest player SMU has had in years they're going to throw to him run it to him have him return kicks they feel like if he gets a step on just about any Defender they see this year if he gets a step he's gone time out Nevada they first 30 seconds 57 seconds left in the first quarter and a curious timeout after a kickoff by Nevada although one thing college coaches will probably use their timeouts a little more at least one of them a little more liberally in each half than they quarterbacks on the last Drive in part maybe to jump start the offense but in part because Preston Stone has two pieces of bloody gauze hanging out nose no good first down and 10 at the 49 play action throwing right this one's going to be caught by Matthew hner the transfer tight end from Michigan up the right hash to the 40 35 and down to the 32 of Nevada that's going to be a pickup of 19 on his first catch of the Mustang first and 10 at the 32 hand off LJ Johnson he's going to lose three on that play is just snowed under off the edge by Nelson ratti for the dline of Nevada well was a great throw right there to hner you mentioned the addition for hner it's going to give the Mustangs a chance to to do what they want with RJ Maryland and play some load management with him he doesn't have 39 yd line well played there by the defense for the wolf pack it'll be third down and long yeah that was KK Meyer at his cornerback position they've already had a cornerback Chad Brown who beat Meyer out for that start spot Mak an interception and then Meyer making a great play right there at the point of attack coming downhill LJ Johnson had some room but it closed in a hurry and now it's third called for that and Nevada will take the penalty because it was going to be third down and two and you can't fall apart because that was Jennings that waited and waited and waited and waited some more on a read option on the RPO he made the right decision but man that took forever I don't think he can fault par for that he's got to be ready to run block too potentially on that play second down and seven at the 18 yd line of Nevada just underway in the second quarter fake to knon throw right Cor in the end zone and off the fingertips incomplete Jordan Hudson but there's going to be a pi thrown against Nevada's Corner over there that's brown Chad Brown who had the interception in the first quarter I think he grabbed him on the break at about the 5 yd line a little bump but it was enough to brashard Smith will be the running back now to the right of Kevin Jennings first and goal at the nine Jennings gives this one to brashard up the middle to the five breaking a tackle down to the one yd line for Smith a pick up of eight and what you see out of the RPO game is the fact that linebackers now have to freeze they can't just automatically Sprint to their gaps to make plays and run fit they have to wait to see if indeed Jennings is going to pull that thing out and throw it and that's why some of these straight handoffs are more effective now with Jennings running the offense rather than Stone uh brashard Smith jogged off gingerly they even stopped the clock for a moment uh for an injury stoppage I believe stone eeve is going to be at fullback LJ Johnson is is the running back on second and goal at the one of Nevada show wants a timeout well there was a lot of personnel changes by the offense yeah for sure time out Nevada their second 30 seconds Adam Savoy our referee announcing that timeout with 1315 to go second quarter seven to nothing Dev about to leads it SMU knocking on the door with the second and goal at the one yd line so Kevin Jennings has come on after uh we knew he was going to play here in the first half but also after Steve reported to us that Preston Stone does have a bloody nose on the sideline not sure what caused it Jennings four of five for 54 yards uh pretty nifty one there on that one RPO where he fired it to I believe it was romelo Brenson running up the sideline and then in the face of a humongous Blitz to able to step up and just dump it off to his check down uh uh Jaylen Knighton who then scampered for all of the 17 yards they needed for a first down and it's that the Mustangs are executing the RPO game it's how they're executing because Jennings is waiting to the very last possible moment making the absolute correct read and yet still executing taking some chances and not being scared to make a mistake and it has worked to Perfection so far second and goal at the one Evie in a wing left formation hand off to LJ Johnson hit in the back field spins off that first tackler now he stood up at the one yd line and thrown back he was within inches of scoring when he was stood up and thrown back a flag has come down right at the end of the play LJ kept out of the end zone it'll be third down and goal pending the penalty you know you want to be able to just line up and run the ball right down their throats here at this part of the field right on the goal line I mean that's that's obvious that was a big question mark coming in how would the the ground game be for the Mustangs particularly in these situations unnecessary roughness Defense number 24 continuing to participate in the play without a helmet Happ is to the goal an automatic first down that's Chad Brown it is Chad Brown who had an interception to start the game but had a face mask a moment ago that kept the drive alive and now he's given the Mustangs a fresh set of downs his helmet came off you have to immediately stop playing and he did not we've seen Chad Brown Christopher Ross the end all these guys are getting unsportsmanlike fouls first and goal inside the one Jennings gives LJ Johnson touchdown SMU there it is that's what you want just hand the ball off run it straight up the a gap and put that In The End Zone Mustangs execute that time but man it has been like pulling teeth to put the ball in the end zone against devada and that's a credit to the wolf pack and how they have come out playing and fighting you got to get credit to to Jeff Joo but that is a nice drive right there for the Mustangs a drive that began with 57 seconds to go in the first quarter uh this is as good as the Mustangs offense has looked so far tonight LJ Johnson had four touchdowns last season his first year here at SMU the Colin roders extra point is going to tie the game at 7 1256 to play second quarter 77u in finally Isaiah wobo will have him at the 46 yd line and that's going to be a pick up at 12 yeah linebackers had come up and a nice read right there by Lewis who had no intentions of ever throwing that football it was a quarterback draw all the way he saw a little bit of a crease and it just takes maybe two steps he's at full speed and he's able to run for that first down right off that left tackle spot Jonathan Jefferson and um Jared Harrison hunt the defensive tackles for S 11:05 to go second quarter 7 all our score with a first down and 10 at the S 46 yd line Brendan Lewis out of the shotgun and he has Savon red with him play action he'll roll to his right here comes some pressure from Elijah Roberts he'll run away from him to the 50 40 40 35 30 inside to the 25 yd line and that's going to be a pickup of 21 on the Scramble for Brendan Lewis it's a well-designed play right there you run man coverage and you get a quarterback that rolls out and can run the ball if they run vers wideside look out because he's going to have a lot of room to run Brendan Lewis did he takes advantage of it and already Nevada threatening to regain the lead here early in the second quarter we're tied at seven with 1020 to go in the second first down and 10 at the 20 of SMU for Nevada they'll empty the back field as red is split out wide to the right now Red's going to motion into the back field they play action to him pressure is coming and he's bumped as he throws the ball and it's just dropped Savon red just didn't catch the ball I don't know if he lost it the sun over there but man that was thrown right to him by uh Brendan Lewis in compete looked like he tried to turn up field before he actually had the ball there but I'm I'm a little bit surprised that Lewis did not see the backside post play right there because they had a guy wide open streaking across the field Lewis doesn't read the field that well he didn't that time it really hurt him Duce Haron in at left corner for be the transfer from A&M out of Denton Guy high school second down 10 Nevada is at the 25 of SMU Savon red will be in the back field this time and they looked at a screen for him instead Lewis is going to run it breaks a tackle going left from Kobe Wilson to the 20 he'll be wrapped up by by Ahad Moses down at the 17 yd line a pickup of eight it'll be third down and short if you don't get to the point of attack and you let this guy get loose he can't hurt you the option game has really been their big threat they have most of their their yards on this and they don't even have a 100 yards yet but they've been controlling the line of scrimmage and Brendan Lewis having to do it all by himself it seems when he gets out of the space and he's able to make plays third and two at the SMU 17 a very tight pistol Lewis with red right on his backside now they go with a wildcat red takes the direct snap and he slips on his cut left at the 18 loses a yard it'll be fourth down they're going to settle for a field goal and they've almost got exclusively ground game even on on throwing Downs uh they have what they they've got somehow four completions of the game but they've all been swing passes or little dump passes uh and now Nevada has to settle for the field goal 36 yd try coming up for Matthew kilum he did not attempt any kicks last year to years ago he was only three of five on field goals kilum on a 36-yard attempt just inside of the left hash to try to get Nevada the lead back high snap brought down well kick is low has the distance and it's good and so with 838 to play in Kobe Wilson will tackle him that'll be a pickup of about eight on the play the Mustangs almost overran that playing pack did a little bit I thought nada might get called for a block in the back here to pull up just at the last moment at at about the 25 yd line and did so I kept waiting for one to come out but it didn't but they got to give credit boy the the the ball carriers for NADA they know what they're doing and they've had plenty of practice because uh this NADA team just can't throw second and two at the 27 Lewis out of a shotgun low snap hands it to Savon red spins through a tackle to the 28 that'll be all a Oney gain Isaiah wobe I believe was the man on the stop it'll be third down and one yeah a simple GH counter we'll see what they line up with here because they're going to be running the football on this third down play uh how close will SMU comea this line of scrimmage and what kind of formation will NADA to throw at him here and they're they're going unconventional they are huddling here this is unlike most teams wol pack two of seven on third Downs tonight they're trying to shorten this game they know their only chance is to win this game on the defensive side they break the Huddle and try to hurry to the line but they had made a change so SV makes a ton of changes they stack the middle they're going to throw it that left side wide open caught at the 50 to the 40 making a man miss to the 30 yd line spinning and finally brought down at the 24 yd line it's Cortez Braham for Nevada and they got him burned him with a deep pass down the left side and we knew everybody would stack the line and compact it they had all 11 guys the Mustangs defense did within about four yards of the line of scrimmage nobody expected that and it was just a lob on a go route up the left sideline had to do was pitch and catch and they did that for their first explosive play in the pass game the entire game believe that one went for 48 yards they had nine yards passing before that play first down 10 at the SMU 24 two minutes left here that's going to be hey that's going to be a two-minute warning Scott first time ever this is the two-minute timeout yeah I think they're calling it The two-minute timeout in college for some reason we'll keep it right here during the two-minute timeout by the way as SMU has tied it up at 10 on a career set the game clock to two minutes that makes sense Mustangs tied it at 10 on a career-long 52 yd field goal from Colin roders but man 48 yd pass to Cortez Braham has uh Nevada in business here in SB territory at the 24 ydd line it's a simple blown coverage nobody covered Cortez and you know that's that's what happens occasionally uh especially in a game like this just kind of lull him to sleep you lull the defense to sleep because everybody knows you can't throw and they get a 48 yard pass play it's not like they executed in the pass passing game they just fool everybody uh for Lewis he's now six of 11 for 57 yards with a touchdown on the SMU side Kevin Jennings came on on the third possession for SMU four five for 54 Preston stone three of 10 41 yds and an interception uh nobody has more than the two catches by romelo Brenson uh on the ground brashard Smith leads SMU with five carries for 30 yards Brendan Lewis the quarterback for Nevada leads them with eight carries for 54 yards this evening it has been uh not a thing of beauty either way 147 total yards for Nevada just 106 for SMU in the first uh 28 minutes of play I think from a numbers perspective the most disconcerting part and there's a lot to to to be a little unsettled by on this statute but the mere fact that you played a whole half and you've got 11 rushing yards that just you know red lashly knows and he said it a couple of times if you listen to him intently during his press conferences he'll tell you that you don't win games particularly in late October November December with skill you have to be able to run the football I don't care who you're playing now a little bit of that skewed because of the bad snap on the front so that took out I believe 17 yards right there of their rushing total so but yet still that's still not great it's not great IU trying to uh tighten a few things up offensively defensively they played well until that one play they just got burned on a moment ago and it's going to give a chance to score here potentially before the end of the half they're sitting at the 24 yd line of SVU with two minutes to go in this first half of play 10 all is our score nice evening here after some rain pregame it's really cleared out beautiful sunshine temperature in the upper 50s here in Reno Nevada yeah would like to rub that into those if you back at home first and 10 at the 24 of SMU split backs on either side but really Shawn dollars is the running back here Ram SE uh Seer I think will split out of the back field Lewis from the shotgun and he will give this one going left here to Shawn dollars to the 22 down to the 21 yd line to pick up about three on the play things bringing that safety Blitz in a lot particularly on running Downs kind of a run blitz here for the Mustangs and who wouldn't when they're running the ball you know 90% of the time second down seven that at the 21 yd line of SMU they're in no Hur hurry not wanting to give the ball back to SMU with much if any time in this half and uh again this is a great game plan for Nevada they really playing old school football keeping it on the ground shortening the game second down seven at the 21 of SMU Lewis gives this one to Dollars has a big hole left to the 17 Isaiah wacovia out there to trip him up to keep it from being much worse at 17 he makes the stop pick up a four making it third down and about three trying to take advantage of an overly aggressive front s for the Mustangs they run that GT counter again and that time dollars got to the edge but woia faster than dollars who ran for 527 yards last year it's a nice play by Isaiah wakia to keep him from getting that first down third down and two at the 16 of SMU empty backfield for Brendan Lewis fourman front for seu and Lewis tied end motion across the formation he'll keep it himself bounces it out left to the 15 to the 10 there's about three four flags for holding that will come in that's why he was able to turn the corner and it'll come back everybody saw it I think I heard everybody yell it from the field they did 100% did that was that was about as obvious as they come the only thing to sort out here is who we calling this on and that's a big play here because it will keep them from getting the first down it will bring up third down and 12 rather than third down and two and I can't imagine that they would try to holding offense number one 10yd penalty third down eled to start the clock on the snap James SMI the receiver called for the hold and I can't imagine that they would gamble here it's third down 12 uh they're going to try to get some yards here for their place kicker who already made a 36 yard kick if they make it here they would take a lead into halftime and that's probably more than coach Cho ever could have dreamed of in a position that this program's in winning just two games each of the last two years there's a spot foul of the foul of the so it's a third and 10 it winds up being at the 24 of SMU and Lewis is going to bring it down he'll run it straight up the middle to the 20 coming right 15 he has a first down to the SMU 14 yd line quarterback draw everybody in the house knew what was coming but yet linebackers in safeties late to the point of attack and the Mustangs allow Nevada to control Tempo control the clock they're going to take this thing all the way down and again you got to at least keep them out of the end zone here 45 seconds left first half 10 all or score SMU and Nevada first down and 10 Nevada at the 14 yd line of SCU Lewis out of the shotgun gives this to Shawn dollar running right to the 10 he is stood up by Kobe Wilson a pick up of four on the play Nothing But ball control here from Nevada keep in mind they don't have any timeouts left and they have been really very method I they got a hurry now as we're down to 17 seconds going under Center For the First Time Lewis he's going to spike the ball 13 seconds left it'll be third down and uh six at the SMU 10 I guess they're going to try to maybe throw one in the end zone understand that call really well they're out of timeouts they are out of timeouts but I I number one I can't imagine they would Gamble and put the ball in the air here and number two why would you if well you can't run here you're out of time out that's what I'm saying to throw very odd they're going to have to throw third down and six at the 10 yd line Bryan Lewis with Savon red do his right Mustangs bring five up to the line here they come with some pressure and Lewis is going to lob this right corner to the end zone touchdown boy simple back shoulder and Jaylen Davis Robinson I don't even think realized the ball was coming Cortez Braham who had the big 48 y on this possession has the touchdown catch that puts Nevada back in front and Braham had to fight through a little bit of a a bump there a couple of bumps by Robinson who again seemed to be a little bit surprised from it uh they execute though in the passing game and have extended this lead eight plays 81 yards in 357 for Nevada to regain the lead before halftime we have nine seconds left in the half kill him on for the extra point and that will make it 17-10 Nevada leading with again 9 seconds left in the half well as poorly as they've executed in the past game that was a brilliant throw right there to the back shoulder on time single coverage had the match up you wanted and Jaylen Davis Robinson just did not make the play the red shirt sophomore LSU trans uh Brendan Lewis in this first half has matched his touchdown total of a year ago that's unbelievable he made 10 starts last year and he had only two touchdowns against six interceptions he's 7even of 12 for 67 yards with two touchdown pass today yeah he had that first one was a five y to his tight end this a 10 y to his wide out Rashard Smith back to return to kickoff nine seconds left first half for SMU with the ball coming up in a moment moment down 17 to 10 to Nevada and and we knew coming in that cornerback was a little bit of a a question mark for the Mustangs uh they've done everything that they can to try and Shore up that position they've even moved crossly from a nickel over to to that cornerback position he's normally a safety SL nickel kill him to kick off and he's going to squib this one down it's going to be caught on a hop by Robert Daniels running up to the 20 bouncing outside and being tackled at the 21 yd line 3 seconds left in the half well very disappointing half here for the Mustangs no doubt looks like a first game and as good as this be played in the fall I thought as as as good as they looked uh they just have not played well in so many aspects from a uh an offensive standpoint have just 106 total yards uh your star studed quarterback that many of you likees one of the top in the ACC threw a pick on his first possession he's three of 10 for 41 yard stone is uh the backup Jennings has more yards in five passes than Stone has in 10 attempts uh just has not been a great first half of the Mustangs three seconds left they go with a handoff to brashard Smith bouncing it outside to the 25 he'll have about 6 yards to the 27 and that's interesting on these first and second down plays on these Choice Downs SMU has been run blitzing a lot with their safeties and it's been very very effective because they've been able to gain a man advantage in the box and it has really stifled some of these big five six seven yards first down plays that Nevada was getting early in this game so it's really wor a lot second down and nine Nevada from their own 34 yd line two by two the wide receivers empty backfield for Brendan Lewis fourman front for the Mustangs Lewis has time he's going to lob this one deep down the left side Mill with a coverage downfield and I think it was just hit him on the backside as it was intended for Marcus bellan and McGill was able to catch up at the last moment it's incomplete simple go route again and that's really all that Nevada has done recently in the passing game off number 15 yeny second down whoa that was a play at the line of scrimmage Isaiah world the left tackle wow that's going to put him way behind the chains with a 15 yard putting him back at the 19 and what is that I think that's the third or fourth hands of the face penalty we've seen in this game between the two teams I mean as far as the penalties go each team's been flagged six times and and it seems like we've had at least seven 15yd penalties in this game that's second down and 24 now at the 19 yd line not a good down position here for this offense and they've not been executing in the passing game they've just been throwing it deep in single coverage Le going to throw underneath on a little drag route this one's caught by Jaden Smith in traffic to the 30 finally brought down at the 33 yd line by Kobe Wilson that's going to be a pickup of about nine and give them now a manageable third down and 10 it will really A variation of a tunnel screen first time they've run that tonight uh he had three blockers that in front of him pretty well executed I'm surprised they haven't done more in the screen game particularly as overly aggressive as SMU sometimes has gotten in this game third down 10 at the 33 yd line for Nevada dollars is the running back Lewis on the right hash Mustangs bringing some pressure he's going to bounce this one outside Kilgore gets Chase and brings him down at the 38 5 yds short of the first down what a great recovery by Alexander Kilgore it was Kilgore such a great player but I really thought the Mustangs played that one well they didn't overp pursue they they played the Gap pretty well didn't give up the edge and they forced the quarterback Lewis to try to run through three guys couldn't do it that time and they have forced the Nevada punt 922 to play third quarter Mustangs are down four rodri Daniels standing back at the SMU 18 yd line awaiting the punt from guy galesby SMU defense able to overcome the pass interference that thwarted a previous stop a lot of calling going on at the line of scrimmage here for Nevada as if they were lining up uh on red 5y peny downon red was lined up quite close to the Snapper shouting instructions and then they don't snap it and back up five more week one penalty right there I mean I know that Nevada wants to take as much time off the clock as they can given their uh struggles in the passing game but don't want to do that there I thought guy Gillespie in the first half was really really good again both of these two teams have new punters again Savon red comes right up to the line right tackle moved early boy full start offense number 16 5yd penalty fourth down you look back even last year at week one in the Louisiana Tech game and as I look back those two teams SMU and L tech only combined for 10 penalties we've had over 12 between the two teams here we've only played a half so this will back it up to the 28 of Nevada and allows Daniels to move up to the SMU 27 awaiting the PT now they wanted to bring Savon red out the Nevada staff did he didn't appear to want to leave no and I and he's now walked back onto the field and has a coach pulling him back to the sideline there's also a flag away from the ball over there in the The Back Field see that de on Sportsman like conduct number one spinning on an opponent 15yd penalty and an automatic first down that is number one is ejected that's Brandon Crosley oh and there's not much other way to put this SC but that's unacceptable it is and we've already seen what was that Jordan Hudson earlier in the game get an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for SMU but he didn't get ejected no he didn't this is your starting corner and it's not freebie for Nevada they they were fourth and 20 absolutely it's not like you've got a two touchdown lead here in this game no down four 1713 to battle leads it with 9 minutes to play third quarter and the personal foul on a punt that hadn't happened because they'd had two procedure penalties now gives Nevada the ball back at their own 43 first down and 10 bo boy you talk about a mental mistake there we've seen a couple of those and red lashley's talked about that and so has Jeff Cho they were concerned about that coming into week one first down 10 at the 43 yd line for Nevada 9 minutes to go third quarter they lead by four pistol formation and out of it they run play action rolling left all kinds of pressure coming and he throws this one away as CJ Sanders was in there to deliver a big head on Brendan Lewis who's holding his right arm at his side closely after taking the shot it's incomplete on the play and Lewis showing some inexperience right there the Richard Jr the Colorado transfer the quarterback retreated there amidst pressure and should have stepped up against it and he really put himself in jail and he's lucky to get that football back second down and 10 Nevada from last time I saw that maybe he did it one time earlier early in the first half but most of his passes have been just lobs up to the edges but that's one where he extends the play and he actually made a throw in a tight window we don't see him do that very often rich Midway through the third quarter 17713 to B's SMU and the Wolfpack now into the into the field first and 10 at the 43 yd line of the mustach you can expect another run play here on first down they've been running pretty much every first down just to try to chew clog work methodically and it is a handoff to Dollars waiting behind the line of scrimmage picks his spot finds a hold of the 40 right side 35 before he's finally tripped up there that'll be a pickup of eight well you just don't like how this game's unfolding and a lot of it is to Nevada's credit at one point early in that second quarter they decided hey they've got a chance not only to compete in this game but win this game and they're playing like it for second down and two at the 35 of SMU and the handoff again is to Shawn dollars coming right not much room maybe a yard before he is driven back at the 34 yd line Alexander Kilgore in there uh along with Elijah Roberts to be third down and short and again just a simple power play on an RPO we'll see what they do on this third down but there there's no doubt uh this is four down territory for them they are well inside the 40 yd line they're down to the 34 and 618 clock just keeps ticking tick tock tick tock and they're just shortening this game with a drive like this third down and a yard at the SMU 34 yd line 11th play coming up Savon red is the running back they'll motion him out of the back field Lewis is the lone back there throws a swing P the red for a first down to the 30 up the sideline 25 steps Out of Bounds at about the staying 20 yd line he'll have a first down a play of 14 on the swing pass he will just a simple swing out of the left flat and Kobe Wilson took a tough angle not a good angle right there and the pass catcher was just able to bounce it to the outside shed that first man in the linebacker Wilson and is able to get down to the 20 yd line first down 10 at the 20 yd line of SMU 540 to go third quarter 1714 Nevada has the lead Lewis in the shotgun with dollar and RAM seur and they fake it to Ram seur because Jafari Harvey was waiting there Harvey quickly broke off of the back and tackled the quarterback on the keep for a loss of one must thingss have been doing a lot of run blitzing in this game and it has paid off on these Choice Downs these particularly on these first down plays because Nevada will generally run the football on a first down uh but again this is about time management for Nevada they're trying to let their defense win theame game and put up enough points to hold on Mustang's offense has struggled second down and 11 at the SMU 22 yd line and the hand off is to Dollars going left breaks through the first tackler to the 20 down to the 19 yd line that'll be a pick up at just two and it'll be third down and nine simple inside Zone run right there they just keep the the clock moving that's third down and eight interesting call here they drew the defender made him think that he was going to run with it and as soon as the defender came up he just threw it to Maryland the guy that the defender came off of first and 10 at the 47 of Dada with 223 to play Mustangs down one stone from the shotgun Blitz is coming he'll throw this one left on a swing to bashard Smith at the 50 spins into a hard tackle loses the ball and covers it as he goes down at the 45 that'll be a gain of two you mentioned they brought the blitz they blitzed two linebackers that time but I love how Preston Stone never gets sped up with the blitz you notice that roll left found Isaiah Smith what great technique by Smith so he not only uses the athleticism but the brains to make that play happen can you believe that is the first sack of the game for smu's defense they had 47 last season that is hard to believe turbo Isaiah Smith coming up with the first one here tonight and turbo had five of those last year only three and a half tackles for a loss but remember Isaiah Smith had two and a half sacks in the championship game against to Lane last year he's really grown up but hey all that weight he's put on he's not quite as quick but man he has become quite a weapon uh on Choice Downs in addition to the third Downs second down 17 Nevada at their 29 yd line with a a 58 seconds left in the game Brendan Lewis out of the shotgun has time he'll dump it off for dollars and he just flat out missed him threw it about three yards wide of him incomplete it's going to be third down and and 17 by the way for RJ Maryland tonight the eight catches for 16 62 yards his most in both categories and the 162 yards the most since Rashid rice had 1802 years ago most for any SMU player cuz last year nobody had any big numbers on this team receiving third down and 17 at the 29 with 54 seconds left Lewis dumping this one across the middle of the field short and they're going to run it up to the $ 35 dollars I believe on the catch to the 37 Harrison hunt will make the tackle there they've got one last gasp here they've going to call their last time out here for a fourth down that they must convert Rich this SMU team at halftime looked absolutely dead in the water I mean we we were down what was it 1710 at the end of two two quarters down down by a touchdown it felt like we were down by three touchdowns as poorly as we were playing and we had 112 total yards at halftime I'm looking at the stat sheet I can't believe it rich we've had 3002 half yards and only 112 in the first half I asked you during a commercial break a few minutes ago when me had the ball if they were going to get to 400 and we were like 412 CU they scored a touchdown on that position that was when they were out near Midfield hey I I I made the Bold statement that oh we'd have well over 300 yards you know but by the end of this over 400 now as you mentioned all right here we go 48 seconds left fourth down 10 Nevada at their 36 yd line they just burned their last timeout Brandon Lewis from the shotgun Mustangs have five up on the line of scrimmage they're going to bring just four and they have pressure Lewis hit as he releases the ball and that one is along the sideline broke it up out of bounds the Mustangs are going to win this one a what a great play Jaylen Davis Robinson the guy that broke it up they've gone it him time and again it was Robinson that was in cover on that touchdown in the shallow right corner on that back shoulder throw he had given up some balls earlier tonight but that's a real good play by Davis Robinson who got in position and then made a play at the end yeah he just forced the receiver out of bounds with the ball so he couldn't come down in bounds and SMU with a 16-point fourth quarter is going to escape Reno with a win boy Escape is the absolute word and hey sometimes when you go to places like Reno you need an escape you need to be able to escape it's always better when you come out ahead and reeno yes it is it's sure it's it's hard to do that it is Preston stone g to take a knee here he'll have to do it one more time depending on when they yeah they started the play clock already so one more time for Preston Stone who was intercepted on his first pass of the year will finish 17 of 30 for 254 yards and the game winning touchdown to RJ Maryland in the final minute and a half and I'm fully expecting r flashy to say hey this thing ended just like we grew it up I'm not Preston takes a knee that is going to do it not what we were expecting here for the SMU Mustangs but they gut it up here in the fourth quarter with 16 points including a safety on defense couple of touchdowns the big throw to RJ Maryland for the game-winning touchdown with uh actually it was with 213 left uh with 118 left in the game and SMU wins this one by a final of 2924 over Nevada huge win Great Character shown by the Mustangs after they were down by seven with nothing going right offensively Preston Stone began the game one of seven and his only completion at that point was a pot pass to I believe rodri Daniels at that time of the game but Preston Stone in the second half looked like Preston Stone the offense did too I don't know what Rett told him at halftime I'm sure it was I'm sure he was very kind at times but whatever he said he needs to bottle this thing up because the Mustangs came out ready to go I don't think SMU was ready for Nevada to be as physical as they were defensively to start the game rid they uh had the answer in the second half though win it 2924 here in Reno tonight the postgame show is through how it all happened SMU won the toss and deferred a Wolfpack quickly punt the Mustang offense with their first drive of the year but ended in quickly playing action Preston looking deep down the left side of the field he threw that one behind Kon Smith and is going to be intercepted at the 30 yd line of Nevada that was one of two big miscues in the first half later in the quarter SMU with a mistake trying to punt High snap goes over Pearson he goes back to the 17 picks it up he's in trouble he's hit he loses the football it's going to be picked up by Nevada he'll be tackled inside the 10 yd line good field position for Nevada the Wolfpack didn't take long to cash in wants to throw looks left has a tight end wide open at the two and that'll be a touchdown Jace Henry P good 7 nothing Nevada late in the first 7 nothing into the second quarter SMU took the ball down the field with backup quarterback Kevin Jennings in for Preston Stone he was dealing with a bloody nose Jennings kept the drive alive with a completion on Third and 17 a few plays later the Mustangs have first and goal from the one first and goal inside the one Jennings gives LJ Johnson touchdown SM P good that made it 77 early in the second the scoring Drive goes seven plays and 51 yards in exactly 3 minutes Nevada responds with field goal SMU answers with one of its own later in the second the game tied at 10 with just over four minutes left in a half the wolf pack then take the ball 81 yards in 10 plays over 3 minutes and 57 seconds and with 10 ticks left in the first half they take the lead in Reno well things bring five up to the line here they come with some pressure and Lewis is going to lob this right corner for the End Zone touchdown 17-10 a halftime school on to the second half SMU got the kick and drove into Nevada territory the drive stalls at the plus 26 and SMU settles for another field goal and that kick has plenty of distance just inside of the right hash and it's inside of the right upright and good Colin Rogers a 43 yd field goal has drawn the SMU Mustangs within four that makes at 1713 early in the second half Nevada then put together its best Drive of the game The Pack go 15 plays and 83 yards in almost 9 minutes down on the goal line they go to former Texas Longhorn seon red red ready for a direct snap takes it faked like he was going to throw he's going to run left slips one tackle touchdown Savon red on a wildcat formation with a Oney touchdown run it's 23- 13 NADA leite P good 2413 NADA late in the third SMU needed a response the Mustangs driving atada territory but stall out at the 34 the first play of the fourth quar then was another long field goal try little bit left of center wind really not a factor here hold is down kick is on its way that one is hook left no good Nevada then burned four minutes over eight plays but had to punt the Mustangs pinned down at their own two yd line they needed a spark and they got just that from RJ Maryland Stone facing a fourman front from the Nevada defense wants to throw has some pressure coming wobs this one down the right side RJ Maryland at the 40 tripped at the 50 and he's down into Nevada territory at the 41 yd line that kept the drive alive later in the drive Rashard Smith ran for 20 yards down to the NADA 12 and two plays later it was Smith again second down and about one SMU at the 4yd line they go hurry up again Stone going to give it to brashard Smith touchdown SMU SMU with life a personal foul let SMU then go for two and that was good 24-21 after a seven play a 94 yd Drive in just over 2 minutes that's when things got weird a fair catch misc on the ensuing kickoff put Nevada back at its own one yd line trying to create some space the SMU defense comes up with a big play Sanders crowding the line of scage high snap and they have him in the end zone I think it's going to be a safety it is safety Mustangs that safety made it 2423 and the Mustangs got the ball after the free kick that drive stalls but the Defense Forces an a punt the Mustangs take over inside their own 20 Preston Stone trying to lead the offense down the field he and Maryland had quite the connection especially in the second half Maryland with eight catches and 162 yards both of those career highs and one of those on Third and seven extended the Drive Preston Stone to throw pressure flushes him out to the right and he's going to throw on the run to his safety blanket it is RJ Maryland at the 50 down to the 46 yd line a pick up of 14 more for RJ the drive continues all SMU needed was a field goal but on another third down it's another Stone to Maryland hookup Stone to throw does down the left side and RJ Maryland touchdown two-point conversion no good but the Mustangs with a 29-24 lead not long after they Trail by 11 one last chance for Nevada Fourth and long to try and keep the game alive Mustangs have five up on the line of scrimmage they're going to bring just four and they have pressure Lewis hit as he releases the ball and that one is along the sideline broke it up out of bounds the Mustangs are going to win this one SMU holds on to win 2924 the Mustangs outscore the wolf ticket final score tonight 2924 SMU a comeback win over Nevada Rich Phillips SC Garner here in the Press Box at Macky Stadium uh due to some logistical issues we're going to wait for Coach Rett Lashley to call in here on our postgame show and certainly looking forward to talking to him after uh Preston Stone helps engineer a 16o fourth quarter defense did have two of that on a safety uh they had the big touchdown run by brashard Smith with the uh two-point conversion after that that got them within three then the safety and then the 35 yard touchdown pass you just heard a moment ago to RJ Maryland that gave SMU the winning margin of 29- 24 and uh there's no doubt about it RJ's player the game here tonight he had career highs across the board with eight catches in 162 yards he's now tied for the uh SMU career record in touchdown receptions by a tight end with 14 in his career and he's only played one game of his Junior season yeah he he he was such a great force in the second half they couldn't cover him he's such a mismatch I mean they were trying to get keep linebackers on him and that's just an impossible task but he's got great hands and what great speed for a guy his size no doubt be in the league it's just you know uh how much money will he get you know coming out of SMU but uh the reality is Rich I know things didn't go well in the in the first half and everybody was kind of down about that we were down at halftime but give credit to Nevada I thought they came out and played one heck of a first half I thought they executed on the ground game the pass their passing game will never be there but uh that they fight and their defense was a lot better I think than anybody thought it would be much more improved than I thought it would be and Jeff Cho has to be excited about what his team did tonight they had a chance to win they had a leak going to the fourth quarter I thought the Mustangs won this game I didn't think Nevada lost it I thought SMU was about to uh do themselves in though and it was on that possession in the third quarter when they had Nevada stopped and then Nevada got two procedure penalties while attempting to punt and on the second one Brandon Crosley was called for an unsportsmanlike conduct and was ejected on the play and that gave them an automatic first down and they wound up with a touchdown on an a drive that took 8 minutes and 50 seconds off the clock and it stretched it lead out to 24-13 and I thought man we were just our own undoing in this with just just an unacceptable penalty at that point of the game we were and I'm telling you I I was a little bit surprised at how the game was actually called on the NADA side I thought they got a little cute I thought they threw the ball when they should have run it uh probably four or five times I thought that cost them at times I thought it gave SMU some new life we had to take advantage of it no question and we did we executed down the stretch I love that 98 yard Drive Rich where we got our uh you know backs against the wall as they say and I don't know about you I just knew we were going to score uh we were just executing it looked like SMU football it looked like so many of the Great drives we had last year uh they did a great job all right joining us now by phone here at Mackey stadium is SMU head coach Rhett Lashley uh little sigh of relief I would imagine from you on the sideline and man what a finish by your guys in the four fourth quarter what can you tell us about the work of Preston Stone and RJ Maryland in that fourth quarter yeah well I mean the way we played the first three quarters we we uh we had to do something special to to pull that one out and redeem ourselves so you know not proud of how we played at all um the the penalties and the discipline and those things but given have out of credit um they were ready to play and did a great job but what I am proud of is you know with the ball on our own two yard line with 10 minutes to go down two scores uh our guys just decided enough enough they dug deep I think I heard y'all say it as I came on we started playing SMU football again and went on a 98 yard touchdown drive then the defense gets a safety and then the defense gets another stop for us to go down and scored the winning touchdown and obviously Preston and RJ made a lot of plays a lot of other guys made a lot of plays too so um it wasn't pretty it's not always how you win but as long as you win we got a chance to get better Preston was intercepted on his first pass he was only three of 10 at halftime I guess he had a bloody nose that maybe you went to Kevin a little earlier than planned how do you account for the way he responded I mean what what was done that got him to respond like that in the second half no I mean we always were I know I didn't tell y'all before the game because I didn't want no battle to know we were always going to put Kevin in the third and fourth Series so that had nothing to do with the way the first two series went or or anything you know we were going to play Preston the first two Kevin the next two go back to Preston and just kind of play it from there the rest of the way and uh I thought Kevin gave us a spark because you know he let us on that first touchdown drive with a big third down uh play to get the first down and so um honestly intended to try to play Kevin more um the way the game went it was tight um you know Preston has that experience and I thought in the second half you saw he settled in you know we hadn't played since November and probably knocked some rust off early but it wasn't him or Kevin we just weren't we weren't executing offensively a lot of penalties a lot of undisciplined things going backwards um you know we gifted him one when our punter let the snap go through his hands and just a lot of things that usually get you beat we we found a way to to pull out a win the drive that got you within three uh brashard Smith I believe had the final 33 yards on the last three plays of that possession what kind of dynamic is he adding to your offense out there there already yeah I think you saw he's a big time player whether it's a kick return handing in the ball throwing in the ball um he's got to
