[Music] C hello I'm Philip Duncan thanks for joining us for our weekend weather update and the outlook for next week and your 7-Day rainfall Outlook as well there's a lot to talk about so let's start now with the animated uh wind map showing the big stormy stuff south of Tasmania and south of the South Island very low air pressure and as you can see it's got a number of centers all tracking around itself we've got milder subtropical uh northwesterly winds for many places at the moment and then coming in over the weekend more of those windy westerlies so let's take a quick look now at what I just talked about here is how we are for Friday afternoon you can see the northwesterly coming through and showers along the western coastline let's animate the next 48 hours through till Sunday afternoon and you'll see more of the same wet weather comes through winds come up then they ease back a bit and by the end of Sunday windy in the very lower South Island that's where the rain is as well over on the western side windy across the southern part of New Zealand but further to the north not as bad high pressure is not far away and that just sort of helps relax things a wee bit but still stormy over in Australia and that is still coming our way so we're not done uh yet with the windy Westerly they could be around for the first half of the month of September so this is how we are shaping up as we go into the weekend as we go into Saturday high pressure is out here to the east a very powerful one and it is stretching back all the way up into Queensland as a result of that that's why we've got the warmer air air flow coming down around the North Island but the further down the country you go the cooler the the air flow actually is as it comes out from the Southern Ocean or at least comes out from south of us even if initially it's coming in as a norwester but it's not overly cold on Saturday no matter where you are it is still fairly mild especially if you're in the Eastern side and rain will be heaviest on Saturday over on the west coast still got some showers in the north here and as we saw yesterday some of them can have a bit of thunder and might be a little bit heavy but because of that warmer mix to the north cooler mix down to the South temperatures on Saturday well like I said it's still fairly mild uh around the country perhaps a little bit cooler in the very south of the country obviously compared to the very North uh we're still seeing places getting up to around the 20° Mark for those in the East and a little bit further down into the uh lower part of the North Island this is not a main Center temperature map it's just showing you uh kind of matching the colors on the map not seeing much in the Blues now because that's pretty much just up in the mountains and ranges Sunday lunchtime so we said that there'd be windy weather in the lower part of the South Island you can see it here on Sunday coming out from the West coming out from Tasmania severe weather still possible around the place but the further up the country you go the lighter those winds will be so from uh sort of the central plateau of the North Island northwards not as windy certainly not as windy as it's been may still be windy around Wellington and cook straight as well as it usually is at this time of the year doesn't change a great deal on Monday in fact the North Island might may actually see those winds easing uh further in some places still windy in the lower North Island still windy through cook straight Wellington severe Gales are possible Inland around the mountains the Southern Alps and this is a mild day again northwesterly winds ahead of a colder change because see the blue line here going into Australia temperature drop for for the Southeastern corner there and then that moves into New Zealand on Tuesday we get a temperature drop uh a very brief bit of snow falling around the place in the mountains mostly but could get to low levels around places like Queenstown and some other parts but as you can see there's some big dry areas in here and it's a West to southwesterly which is not usually too too cold for us in New Zealand there'll be West and Northwest winds still blowing around the North Island it's another windy ear day for the North Island on Tuesday Gales maybe severe Gales in there and yes still a few thunderstorms in the west so Wednesday next week some high pressure we you haven't seen this for a while coming out of Australia closer to us but we're on the outer edges of it the windy squash zone between the high pressure up here and the low pressure just south of us so a cooler day for those of you around the country uh exposed to that West to Southwest wind if you're sheltered from it it won't be too bad and the wet weather is mostly on the western and southern ends of New Zealand Thursday the highs are still pretty much in the same place we've still got a bit of a windy flow around the country not quite as wet as it's been still seeing a few showers around and again mostly on the western side and the southern sides and our final uh forecast M for Friday shows another big stormy low south of us not as big as the one we've got at the moment but still enough with the high just to the north here so this is the squash Zone big windy westerley severe Gales back again to Central areas and more heavy West Coast rain good news all this heavy rain it is going to help our Hydro lakes here is the 7day rainfall map you're going to see this big blue area here kind of expanding out as we go through the days ahead so by the time we reach Friday of next week we're into that 300 mm category all along this part here now it may go beyond that too 3 400 millimet for some areas very good news for the hydro dams because this will feed into some of them however it also worth noting the further east you go the drier it gets so the blue you see here surrounded by Green 1 to 5 mm won't be much along the Eastern side of the country uh but weather coming in from the West is quite heavy the other feature to note the blue up here around the top of New Zealand surrounded by Green which means it's at the start of the scale that's a sign of that high pressure north of the country so yes there is a lot of rain coming in caught up in that Westerly flow but the further northwards you go the more likely you are to be in that sort of more dry setup still plenty of showers don't get me wrong uh and some of those could be Heavy but we're not seeing the same totals as we go through the next seven days that's all from me busy week this week probably another one next week as well have a great weekend we'll see you on Monday [Music]
