Maple Leafs Sign Defenceman Jani Hakanpää!

what's going on guys Andrew pck hocky here back again with another video back for the second video of the day but at least the Maple Leafs let me rest for for most of the day rest my back up a little bit uh cuz your boys on the ltir but the Maple Leafs have finally signed the mystery defenseman the guy that nobody knew what was going on with and that's Yanni Hawkin paa so if you guys are new here boy get some more subscribers I would really appreciate it let's get in to this though it's going to be a lot of fun to continue to see how the Leafs make all these roster moves work but let's get right into the press release for yanie hawen paaw the map Leafs announced today that the hockey club has signed defenseman Yanni hawen paaw to a one-year contract the value of the contract is 1.47 million uh and we'll look into all of his numbers in a second but he SI 7 225b and this has been a guy that the Maple Leafs were reported to have signed when free agency had opened up and it never officially got announced there were some worries about his injury trouble his knees people didn't know if he was ever going to play hockey again so it's obviously a concern but the map Leafs are looking at this and saying no look he's going to be ready to go he's going to be fine so let's see what happens and this is what it looks like this is what his numbers look like ever since he's come into the NHL he's played a lot of minutes and you can see in that 2022 23 season he was playing nearly 20 minutes a night so he's playing like top four minutes last year in 64 games he played over 18 minutes so we'll have to see he chips in a little bit offensively he's a plus defenseman you know not a ton of penalty minutes but he does he does get himself into the box a little bit uh but the the next question is is where is he going to fit into this blue line right because this is the the current look of what the leafes pairs look right now and I'm wondering if Riley and tanv stay together I believe Ben Wa and McCabe will likely stay together as the second pairing and then you could potentially have emman Larson and hawen paaw as your third pair because you're going to you're going to swap lilligren in and out and I'm also wondering if the map leaes might explore moving lilligren as well uh depending on how Haw and paaw performs at some point in the season I don't know just spitballing but I can see lilligren and hawk paw splitting time uh on that third pairing not not splitting up Ben ju and McKay but we'll have to see what it looks like but Ben are uh Beno McCabe and now hawen paaw play that gritty physical style of game that the map Leafs need the big bruising defenseman and I want to take a look at hit leaders because you can see this past year Yanni hawen PA led the team and he only played 64 games played with with Dallas right he had 196 games uh or 196 hits shout out to stmw sorry guys I'm still a little bit out of it here but 196 hits uh he led the Dallas Stars and if you look at the Maple Leafs you can see like I mentioned Beno and mccab were at the top uh Beno threw a lot of hits only playing in 64 games but he would slide into third here on the team with the amount of hits that he throws and you know even in significantly less games he was throwing his almost the same average of hits as Jake McCabe was so it's really good to see another defenseman that's going to throw the body around quite a bit and the Maple Leafs get bigger they get tougher and they get a guy that can play close to 20 minutes but I'd imagine because of the troubles with his injuries and again we're going to have to see what it looks like going into the season how they're going to utilize him but it's another guy that can play top four minutes you've got all Oliver Ekman Larson who can play top four minutes you've got tanv who can play top four minutes Riley who can play top four minutes uh mcab like literally everybody on this Decor you know lilligren has played top four minutes at points in his career Ben w got an eyeopener to playing top four minutes last year they all are capable of playing that style of hockey so it might help this blue line to be able to divvy out the minutes a little bit and not put so much pressure on that first pairing uh especially again it all comes down to if Hawkin paaw can stay healthy if he does this is music to every rela fans years this guy is going to give substantial help on that on that back end in terms of the physicality clearing out the front of the net and playing pretty solid overall defensively but there's another thing that we have to look at and that is the Maple Leafs cap situation currently they're in the negative by $2.5 million and that's with the addition of Nick Robertson and Yanni hawen pod and you know we mentioned earlier today that Steven lorence is a guy that's going to need a deal if they believe he can win a spot with his PTO and Max petti according to every reporter including Chris Johnston is saying that he will end up signing a contract with the Maple Leafs once they get closer to the season so where does all of that work so first of all I I I obviously think Robertson wins a spot over derer or Holberg but I can see somebody like derer being put on waivers uh or being a guy that gets send down to the miners I know I like doer uh but I I don't know if the Maple Leafs are willing to risk pontis Holberg going out unless the Maple Leafs trade David comp which again would get them $2.4 million in space so just for the sake of this we're going to oh well it doesn't work like that on puckpedia but let's um let's try to make a trade let's see if we can do that while I'm filming this right now so we'll make a trade um we just for the sake of the video um I'm going to be trading uh where is he uh David Camp uh and I'm also just for the sake of the the video just to show you guys the money uh and what I think the leaf should do let's see Connor Timmons okay and let's just pick up let's just pick up a draft pick again this isn't what's actually going to happen but for MoneyWise this is what I would do to to help out a little bit so uh again you have you have $960,000 in cap space uh and then this is how your blue line Looks temporarily I I think they'll run with these seven guys and again now you've got your your forward group here so what is the next move for the map Leafs at this point do they remove a Connor derer in favor of a Max pater ready and put him in the minors and bury his cap hit because if they do that now they've got $2.1 million this is where you could fit in a Patcher ready right so there's a lot of difficulty uh in terms of how the map Leafs can work this out but of course they've got guys that make a whole lot more money than I do and you do and everybody probably watching this do uh so we'll have to see where they allot this money but finally Haw andpa has signed like I said guys like Camp guys like Connor der guys like Connor Timmons all these guys are going to potentially be moved or sent to the miners where does Ayan Reeves fit in in this situation are the Maple Leaves actually going to be signing patch ready and giving him that deal again it seems like it I don't really know all I know is is I'm getting up to my time limit of being able to sit in this chair without starting to be
