REACTION: Georgia Tech OUTPLAYED in loss to Syracuse

[Music] [Music] [Music] hello hello everyone and welcome in my name is Bryce Jordan te Lo is 3128 and it was probably a little bit worse than the final score indicated we're going to recap the game we're going to get my thoughts um no Callins today but we will obviously take call-ins next week on some of the on the thoughts of the game after we've dissected a little bit raw motions still all over the place you're watching swarm talk let's rock and roll let's talk Georgia Tech Syracuse and what happened in here and make your feel at home the crowded Booth is coming on the crowded Booth get some thoughts on this game and I think you know you kind of see in the thumbnail you see it in the title of this Syracuse completely outplay Georgia Tech in every sense of the word um coaching they out coach Geor Tech they outplayed him offensively they outplayed him defensively special teams Jord Tech was kind of a bright spot outside of the Miss field goals uh that that's obviously T tough but um Syracuse out played them I mean this is just straight up going into somebody's house and and they just beat you and I think Jord Tech is capable of doing that to some teams and today Syracuse did that to Jord Tech um the reactions filing in on social media and in obviously our Discord make sure you hit the link down below to join that Discord they've been kind of all over the place I'm not necessarily in the in the ilk of that the sky is falling uh for this Jord Tech Team I think that there's still a lot left to play for obviously I mean it's week two of college football uh the third game of the year for Georgia Tech after they played in week zero still a lot left to be play for uh the ACC still wide open last that time I checked the season did not end on September the 7th so everything's going to be okay now obviously things have to you know have to get cleaned up and you know it's why we'll kind of start off with this it's why for me after the first two games and we kind of talked about this on yesterday's preview episode of this game the hype was at an all-time high the first year the ranked for the first time since I was in high school um you know for for me but in all in all seriousness this is why teams evolve over the course of a season teams are allowed to you know change week to week and we talked about one of the deficiencies we thought coming into this game was going to be Syracuse's uh you know run defense they did a really good job against jte i' say especially in the third in the first half so bottom line I mean you lost this football game we're going to talk about it but the sky's not falling and this team is somewhere in the middle of I think the fan expectation after the first two weeks and what happened today seeing a lot of so and so should be fired completely overhaul the offense completely overdo you know overdo this um you know the overreaction season is here um and then like it was the first two weeks you know top of the world now bottom of the barrel somewhere in between is probably where this team is and that's where I kind of U you know that's where I sit so let's kind of talk about this the first point I want to make here Kyle McCord's legit and you know if you've been watching our show or just the college football shows we talked about when Fran Brown was hired at Syracuse all three of us myself included and Ralph and will were excited to see the the hire of Fran Brown to Syracuse you saw the infusion of energy into that program um that hadn't been there and in terms of recruiting and I even mentioned this you bring on Elijah Robinson uh the former defensive line coach at A&M that say what you want about how good A&M was under Jimbo Fischer it was never really a defensive problem it was obviously an offensive issue and Robinson was one of the best defensive line Recruiters in the country they they outplayed you they out schemed you and I think just bottom line they just beat you up physically for 60 minutes now obviously Jord Tech despite all the things that went wrong in this game still had a chance to win putting up 14 points in that fourth quarter and had a chance to get a stop couldn't do it there at the end but it never really should have come to that point um Syracuse really was comfortably in the lead this game until I would say till about the eight minute Mark of the fourth quarter now let's let let's talk about this though going back to Syracuse th this is where you have to sit a lot of people saying we shouldn't have lost this game this is going to be one of the easier games on our schedule well Vegas certainly didn't think so I mean Vegas had this as a three and a half Point favor I think it dropped down to two and a half maybe an hour two hours before kickoff or something like that so maybe to the perception of the Georgia Tech fan this was supposed to be an easy game but look going on the road no matter where you're playing or who you're playing is tough and like I said when Fran Brown was hired he brought some guys with him and and Georgia Tech got a nice dose of that uh Jackson Meeks had a nice game um obviously uh the running back Allen had a really nice game and then obviously Kyle McCord I mean look guys this I said this Kyle McCord I think has been dunked On by the elites of college football to where it's become the normal for the teams not in that blue blood or that Elite ranking to follow suit when he's a pretty dang good quarterback and he showed you he went 32 of 46 for 381 yards four touchdowns completed 70% of his passes and finished with 167 point6 quarterback rating he slung it around the yard he torched your defense you couldn't get home on him and that was one of the keys we mentioned like if you don't get home on him they've got some athletes at receiver they're going to get open they did and he made you pay and a lot of times when Tech did have great coverage McCord just put the ball on the money and look I said this yesterday maybe he wasn't good enough to be at Ohio State and win a National Title with that team but there's probably a hand like four or five quarterbacks in the country that can go and do that and be an elite quarterback at Ohio State k m was a very very good quarterback Fran Brown said so in his press conference he said hey I got to think you know I need to write a letter to Ryan day about what he allowed us to have so you know mcord lit you up I mean absolutely lit you up this was a an example of a game where when you don't get pressure the defense is still suspect and look everyone was ready to jump down our throats on our show because we had raised questions about the defense we were all supposed to just assume well if it was that bad last year it's going to be great you shut down a Florida State team for the most part but we've seen Florida State's not who they were um you know and not who I think a lot of people including us thought they would be everyone in the country thought they'd be you played against georia state where you gave up almost five yards a carry and that was you won the game it was never in doubt but that's the reason I said you didn't dominate against Georgia State because they showed they could run the football Now Syracuse runs the ball here for 4.2 yards per carry that's a solid line that's that was that's something for you know when you look at the ability to be balanced yeah you had 32 carries for 134 yards you threw for 381 if you're Syracuse you kept Jord Tech on their toes and linebackers got sucked in to the offensive line Syracuse was able to bounce the ball out a lot but this is a this is a talented Syracuse offense and you know I think just one of the biggest things is realizing that if you're going to believe in your own team to make steps and evolve you have to understand that that same thought process applies to other teams across the country Syracuse is one of those and Syracuse has a pretty good football team on Saturday September the 7th the process of that it just shows you how hard it is to win day in day out and win week in week out that that to me is the differ between the teams like a Syracuse a Georgia Tech um you know and and the and the and the great teams in college football that just show up week in week out and it's the same it's the same standard and they hit that standard or go above it week in week out and that's what Jord tank has to learn to do I mean Brent keyth told the broadcast team what's it going to be like when we win because it comes with new responsibilities it comes with a new sense of pressure how do you handle that and it doesn't mean that Jord te has failed alt together as a program but today they failed this test did they fail the big final exam no but they failed on today to be able to match that now despite everything that Syracuse did well Jord still had a chance to win it I think it still speaks to the resolve the fight to be able to stay mentally in a game where the score was you know nine 10o game but Syracuse it felt like was doing whatever they wanted when they wanted to offensively so I think that just super important Syracuse dominated time of possession I mean I saw some of the comments on our previous show they said hey there's another key Bryce that you want to point out you know Jord Tech Brent key they're going to want to keep the ball Syracuse had the ball for 36 minutes um Jord Tech conversely had it for 23 minutes no turnovers on either side but Syracuse finished with 515 total yards uh 28 first downs and they were 10 of 17 on third downs and two of two on Fourth Downs so look they averaged 11.9 yards per completion they got vertical I mean they picked apart this defense we can talk about injuries we can talk about a lot things all I'm going to say is the same energy that a lot of people had coming out of weeks one and two or weeks zero and one you have to keep that when talking about this and we'll keep it the same when we talk about when Jordan Tech wins I mean this team is still growing and developing on the defensive side of the football they weren't going to be a finished product either way if they had come out flat in week zero against Florida State if they' come out out firing at all cylinders like they did it's not a finished product and it's it's learning to consistently be your best and hit those benchmarks week in week out and look Jord Tech is going to be in a mix of about 115 other programs and learning to do that there's some teams that that standard is so ingrained in their program that's just what happens and J's not one of those yet not saying they can't be they're just not that quite yet and this game showed that um but I do want to give credit to Syracuse good football program well coached Fran Brown we mentioned it on our college football show back in January and February when this hire was made and we started to see you know some of the additions he was bringing in they got some dudes I talked about the tight end Ronda Gadson six catches 93 yards two touchdowns pea has six for 88 two touchdowns Hatcher five for 67 Allen five for 47 Allen combined by the way for 140 yards All Purpose 80 on the ground 60s something on the uh on on in the receiving so look just bottom line here this was a game where you got punched in the face you were staggering you were staggering and we'll get into some of the things because I wanted to start this show out giving credit to Syracuse they played well tip your cap to him move on and take down VMI next week now here's here's what here's what I would say and I would take away from the Jord Tech side of things let's go obviously to the comparison Factor here you start to kind of look at the big play Factor this is what is alarming okay so Jord Tech we talked about capitalizing on big plays um once again big passing plays um per kind of the stats that Jord that that a lot of programs use is going to be a gain through the air of 15 yards or more um Jorte just had five of those and they had had three in the first half two in the first quarter one in the second and then just two plays passing plays of 15 yards or more in the second half one of them was to Malik Rutherford for a 15 yard gain and then obviously the H Avery Boyd um you know pass that he got all the way down to the five yard line that was a 20 yard catch so 115 yards came through explosive plays for Haynes King uh running the football which is something Georgia Tech did not do well the you know look it was two two play by hannes King it was three touchdowns where you essentially had gains of 10 yards or more in this so you know you had the hannes king keeper for 21 yards the Han King keeper for 26 and then Jamal Haynes ran up the middle which was a great breakdown on the ACC Network by the way for them to be able to kind of get that in real time and and you know just look you know just he he did well he he I think instead of bouncing it out he did a really good job all right then the the alarming part Syracuse had five rushes of 10 yards or more in this game including three or four of those five plays were in the second half including L Quin Allen's 24 yard carry they're late in the fourth here's the alarming part and this this is something where you can I think we'll call them you know what we're gonna call these I've got a name sticky note stats sticky note stats that's what we're g to call it on this show it's where you put it on a sticky note you put it on your monitor you put it on your mirror you put it wherever you want it and that's something you go back you look at okay I'm going to file that away and if it starts to if that Trend starts to rear its head again that'll tell you whether you're going to win or lose 10 passing plays of 15 yards or more in this football game I mean people might take it as I'm I'm I'm I'm trying to dog on Jordan t k mord just he just torched you he picked you apart you did not get consistent pressure um mord had let's go down the line here 1 two 3 four five five passes of 15 yards or more in that first quarter he added three more in the second quarter and then one in the third one in the fourth he had back-to-back um explosive plays uh not in concession but just throughout the game in that first and second quarter 32 yard pass to P up the middle and then a 32 yard pass to Gadson um Jord struggled to stay with the receiving core it was an underrated receiving core you add in gadson's a tight end it's a big physical uh you know pass catching group there for Syracuse so explosive plays they killed you on I mean that's that's part of you know what really hurt in this game you go to some of the advanced stats that I'll get to here uh we mentioned big plays explosive play Syracuse got 302 of their 55 yards off of those explosive plays here is something else that's kind of crazy and this is where I think a lot of the fans and what I what I was looking at you know was the frustration was the play calling and not being able to get vertical and I'm gonna go back and watch this we'll talk about it on Tuesday evening but where I kind of sit with this is that cuse was playing a lot of twom man High cover two shell cover three shell they were not going to let Georgia Tech get get deep on you and so credit to this defensive coaching that Fran Brown a defensive backs guy obviously for people that don't know Fran Brown was the DB's coach at Georgia last year um I don't know if a lot of people know that I mean this is a guy who has been under you know one of the best staffs and was highly touted um being able to make that jump you know to that head coach that so I mean this is what he knows that's his bread and butter and he kind of shut down the vertical passing game for Hanes King and Company but you go to short passing both teams fairly even Tech 16 of 18 in the five yards or less category you get to the medium 10 of 14 okay but deep passes Jordan te only threw six passes over 15 yards or more in this game and they were two of six you know to me I just think that it's one of those things where you couldn't go vertical you were really kind of getting into the sense of maybe this group is going to have to spread us out we're gonna have to use Malik we're gonna have to use Eric Singleton to try to beat guys of coverage and look Syracuse tackled well uh this this Joker fidil Diggs for Syracuse number 10 seven tackles two tackles for loss he didn't have a sack but he had like three or four quarterback pressures number 10 on Syracuse the offensive line could not block him they R ran several stunts they kind of line Diggs who has played as a defensive lineman he's played as a linebacker in this kind of hybrid role the only time you really had success with him is when you an obvious passing down he kind of sat down in the middle of the field and hannes king would use Jamal Haynes or the Crosser or a tight end to manipulate him in the passing game in the Run game Fidel digs did what you wanted I mean he he he did what they he did what he wanted so he led the team in tackles with seven of these um I I thought he played very well very very impressed with fidil Diggs um on geordan Tas side of things defensively ta Seymore obviously had to play more in this game with the injury to L miles Brooks who did come back and then the injury you know we saw obviously to Clayton pow Lee so both of your starting safeties at one point another in this ball game were banged up we talked about the safety room for Jord Tech that was one that I had a concern coming into the season in terms of depth and what would the fallof be I like how they've utilized ta Seymour in third down situations we know that Jaden Davis is is you know kind of the other backup at that spot will we have to see more of those guys we we'll have to see um Amari Harvey you know eight catches eight tackles Kyle eford six tackles look this is my thing on Kyle eford and I've gotten blasted for saying this and I mean I think today was a great example of it KY eford is a high effort guy he is going to be a fan favorite because of the cowboy CER and rightfully so he plays hard he plays 110% he got sucked in on some of the run plays uh he got he bid on some of the play actions that's a credit to McCord for selling it it's also a credit to Syracuse for being balanced offensively giving you different looks and being able to do that I mean that's that's also you know that's that that that's kind of a big piece of the puzzle so I think defensively for Jordan Tech I mean it's just one of those games where you didn't really get a great push um they and look everyone saw I mean if you're J Tech fan you saw kind of the back and forth um the passive aggressive back and forth between Fran Brown and Brent key this week or whatever it was whether that was real or not Syracuse in their mind manufactured that they had been dissed and it showed they played explosive they played aggressive they played mean and nasty and if you followed college football and you look take a look at that coaching staff that Fran Brown has up there specifically with Elijah Robinson who's a defensive line guy that shouldn't come as a surprise that's that's that's what Robinson wants to do and he has so far he's brought that there now a lot of people were saying but Bryce but Bryce they gave up 200 plus yards on the ground to the Ohio Bobcats last week ladies and gentlemen this why we play the games this is this is why teams are allowed to evolve that's why you have course correction over the course of a season that's why you allow teams to make adjustments from week in and week out and they made adjustments they they made adjustments it's why you're probably never as good as you think you are and you're never as bad as you think you are you're somewhere in the middle so is Syracuse's defense a group that's going to give up 2 200 yards per per game against you know Mac competition no and they just showed that to you against a team that a lot of people thought was one of the better rushing attacks in the country so just impressed with the way that Syracuse played I mean that's the only thing I can sit here and say I mean impressed they they they stuck it to Jord Tech in this football game they they they stuck it to Jord Tak in this football game want to take a look at a couple of more things because you look at the drives you know we talk about the middle eight okay the middle eight is the last four minutes of the first half and the first four minutes of the second half arguably the most important time in a football game to be either to capture momentum or kick off the second half with momentum and Syracuse won that category as well um go back and look at this right here you know Jord Tech did have the touchdown um with you know kind of I would say Midway through that second quarter they missed the field goal which hurts big time obviously it would have been a tie football game if you could have gotten that field goal they missed field goal four half and then they punt to start off the third quarter they punt again with 644 left in the third meanwhile Syracuse punts in the second quarter but they go they get a field goal and then they punt in the third quarter so they didn't win it massively but here's something that's nuts to me you talk about time of possession keeping your defense on the field and let let's let's just let's look at this because I think this is this is interesting when you go back and look at it okay so we're going to start with around that final four Mark Jordan Tech had the ball for a minute and 29 seconds to end the half they went three and out to start the second half and then they went five plays before having to punt in the second Drive their second Drive of the second half so in total they had it for 11 plays I'm going to do some quick math here that's 52 plus 4 that's 56 they had it for 16 plays and they got 52 yards in the span of the final four of the first half and the first four of the second half conversely even even though Syracuse only kicked a field goal in in that span this is what they did the last Drive they had it six plays 31 yards they had to punt before halftime obviously giv Jordan take the chance then they go 15 plays 65 yards on a 6 Minute 55 second drive to start their first drive of the third quarter they get the field goal and even on the next one where they punted they went eight plays and 43 yards so in that time frame we already talked about it Jord Tech went what 16 for 52 in that I got a lot of stats Ralph's not here to back me up on this I'm could just be pulling this out of thin air but hey we got the iPad we're right here reading off reading reading the stats that we took notes of during the game conversely so 16 plays for 52 yards for geordan Tak in that time span meanwhile got to do some quick math BR Bryce let's bring out the calculator real quick let's bring out the calculator 31 plus 65 Plus 43 conversely in that same time frame Syracuse ran 29 plays for 139 yards yes they Only outscored You by three points but your defense was gassed they couldn't do lot and so look we can talk about the idea that well the def defense didn't play well you had to spend six almost seven minutes on the field Geor couldn't sustain a drive and even when they did go back to that 11pl 75 yard Drive in the fourth quarter where you know they go back to back it took them 11 plays to get down there but it only took three and a half minutes off the clock two and a half minutes now look if you're scoring it doesn't matter if you're winning football games it doesn't matter but what I'm telling you is is when you're going up against team that's controlling the clock and they limit your possessions it's just something to keep an eyee on now drch still had more drives um you know 10 drives compared to Syracuse is nine uh they scored on 40% of them Syracuse scored on 56% of them but the average time of possession was two minutes and 17 seconds so you're either scoring quickly or you're going three and out and I think you had one two you had two three and outs you had obviously the two the the fourth down attempt so you only you had five drives of five plays or less in this game it works if you're scoring it works if you are blowing out a team but in a situation like this I would be interested to see the conversation I hope this question is posed in a in a press conference too because what happens what adjustments need to be made when you get into a game like this where even when they're not scoring they're still winning the time of possession which is limiting what your offense can do because you might not touch the ball as much and you're you're you're only sustaining drives for two minutes and 17 seconds um another thing too I mean Syracuse converted on third downs we talked about it they had a longer average third down distance 6.5 yards compared to Jordan Tech who had 4.8 look we'll kind of wrap this up here I got to take a quick nap before I go to the LSU game tonight bottom line you lost the game outright because you got outmanned out physical outcoached the whole nine yards that that's what happened in this game it's GNA happen on some sun some Saturdays how do you bounce back you're going to play VMI you need to smoke them we'll talk about that we'll look a little more into that game but Georgia Tech got outplayed by Syracuse Syracuse played this game very very well and now you have to go back to the drawing board you need to find ways to combat what they did defensively so that you can stretch this uh this offense out a little bit more you know the usage of Eric Singleton has been very interesting to me I go back to Singleton I mean yeah he had five catches for 86 yards he was good but he only had seven targets especially when Rutherford goes down it feels like they need to go there more still waiting on the emergence though of that next receiver because if Malik Rutherford is out for any period of time we already told you defense isn't going to know where number two is on the field but when you look at this equation you start to look at okay Avery Boyd four for 56 Jamal Haynes five of 26 Chase Lane 3 for 27 bayy Stockon two for 17 they did Target Leo Blackburn one time Jackson halls and Anthony KY both had a catch as well you got to figure that out because credit to haes King I mean he kept you in this ball game he went 28 of 38 259 a touchdown 74% completion percentage and I think this is the biggest thing too people can compl about the checkdowns he kept the ball out of Harm's Way he he didn't turn he didn't have interception and that look that's been one of the big we've talked about it too that's been one of the big bugaboos about people having an issue with him not being in the National quarterback top quarterback conversation because of games where he yeah he might account for three touchdowns but he's got two picks and that'll hold you back he's kept he's kept the ball out of Harm's Way for the most part this season so you have to appreciate that he kept you in the game he's also your leading rusher and look I said this too I think that this is a would this would Echo this game reminded me a lot of the Boston College game last year and where Brent key I believe told the radio reporter um Chris moneyham you know leaving the field after the game he said we have to help Hayes King out like we can't just put it all on him it doesn't mean h king is not a good quarterback you just can't let your guy account for over 300 yards of offense and not really have standout weapons next to him you know Jamal Haynes 11 carries for 35 yards your offensive line got bullied and this was one that you know the hype machine started rolling into fcan the continuity how many snaps they played together all this kind of stuff and look I warned fans about that going into the Florida State game and Geor Tech pass the test with flying colors but this is what that looks like continuity these things on paper don't necessarily matter when you get into the game and Syracuse showed you that so Syracuse played a very well game they played discipline they played a physical brand of football and I think Tech got punched in the mouth never truly recovered until it was a little too late um and like you said you love to have that third quarter um you know that that uh You' love to have that field goal that you missed halftime as well also wanted to talk on this too the fourth down playay the fourth downplay you know a lot of people I guess are scared to criticize or you're not allowed to criticize coaches or whatever I don't understand that play call in terms of running the ball right at the Middle where you know that's probably been a little bit of the weakness of this team so far uh in the game you've seen Syracuse stuff you multiple times and so I don't know to me it's just interesting that that was the play call and the decision to go for it on fourth down inside your own 30 now you know it's it's bold I understand what they're going for I understand the thought process little bold little risky but if that's the way they want to play if the analytics tell you that then a lot of times that's uh that's what you see and then kind of the last thing that we'll get to here and I will get to this one comment because it does see uh Alex you get the one comment of the day a game like this was a perfect opportunity for King to fall apart and turn the ball over props to him for not doing that exactly uh green says 18 interceptions last year is why they aren't letting him throw downfield more well that's a problem because if you don't then they're just going to bring the safeties up and they're just going to play you inside the box and they're going to beat you and you'll win five games you can't do that you have to let Hayes king throw the ball I mean you can't just not let him throw the ball so we'll see um passing game was kind of disappointing not in terms of what hannes king did just the play calling and I'd love to go back and see and I'll have to go back and watch the film we'll talk about it on Tuesday we'll also open up the phone lines on Tuesday night to let you uh you know rewatch The Game tell me what you think and it' be interesting to watch but this right here completely outplayed in all aspects of the game your special teams made some cool plays blocked punt blocked field goal get onside kick but outside of that a lot left to be designed from this team and it just shows you that hey it's not a finished product is Saturday September 7th indicative of what this team is going to be the rest of the season I don't think so you can't let it be I think this team is better than what they showed out there uh today but Syracuse played well they played better than you on one given day um I think these are probably two pretty even teams by the way too uh there was a lot of thought process and look I think I predicted Tech to win 34-23 everyone's still waiting for this um yeah I don't want to do that but I appreciate that Google home um hashtag not anad my thought process here completely just blinked on me you have to be able to open up this offense at some point like that just has to happen and we'll see we'll see if it happens I think everyone should want and need and expect to see a thrashing next week against VMI there need you need to just blow them out of the water so uh we'll see we'll see hey thanks everyone to watching we couldn't get to all the comments make sure you tune
