happy Friday everybody welcome on in it's j J Alex 975 the KSL Sport Zone Alex Ki Jeremiah Jensen he's JJ I'm Alex and of course our football Fridays are absolutely jam-packed with all the football talk you want and uh we just pick up where coach Mack and Lemma and Jay catch today filling in for H and Scotty who are both uh what are they doing on a vacation situation is that what's going on they're on a cruise no oh that's not it's summer Fridays Fridays that's the the I can't think of a better uh September destination in Dallas you know what's funny is yeah right you know what uh the speaking of the cruise cuz BYU is trying to do that the cruise they're trying to do like the full-on gymer will be there and Hance is one of the the featured guests you guys can go there all you can eat and then all you can get a h dude like uh my goodness Jimmer and h Huh Jimmer and Hance and hey now's a good time to catch him I saw H at his son's game I said last last week I to last week as well yeah and he's like down 60 lbs and he's talking this revolution so go get you talk about all you can eat challenge him to an all you can eat cuz probably last 20 yeah last 20 years probably couldn't get him but now you can catch you might you might be able to get him just cuz he's trying to watch your window off opportunity is now uh Stevenson Sylvester Utah Legend and Riley Nelson BYU Legend that's uh that's who of course always joins us on our Fridays we had our first one of the books last week do you guys feel like uh cam Rising you knocked the rust off everything's good you're back to back to back to fighting shape now for football season oh yeah man I mean n he took a couple blows but uh you know n man last week was awesome uh honestly the show went by fast I felt like we besides the heat it was hot we could uh I but listen Sly you don't help you don't help yourself every week every time I see you like it's slimming Give me the give me the full they're like what do you have they're like uh I'm going to need everything in Black well where are you going to be outside next to a high school track and so I'm going to I'm going to try to keep ity I'm trying to get this appearance game listen it's uh it's going to be a fun day of course as usual we've got a lot going on we've got tons to uh to jump into here our program is always is brought to you by G2G bars all natural ingredients and no preservatives make the G2G bar perfect for anybody who needs a quick tasty nutritious boost uh let's kick off the program as we always do let's just get right into the we we got to talk a lot of stuff today so let's just get in and start going it's the cut right here at the top of the hour okay I added it's time for the biggest story of the day this is what made the cut with JJ and Alex on 975 the KSL Sports Z like to see us run the ball better you know we didn't run the ball badly against Southern Utah but not up to our standards I would say that on defense we tackled pretty well we played the run pretty decently we need to create more takeaways and with the uh the new clock rules where you don't stop the clock on first downs the possessions have become even less which magnifies the importance of taking care of the football and taking the ball away shocker take care of the football out of wit's mouth immediately right run the ball and out of the gate it's number one on the big playboard of of what you got to do is is take care of the football that he preaches that he'll say it at least eight times a day even in practice so now it's a different test this week obviously for Utah we got a couple things going on with BYU going down to SMU you're going to get a very different Beast with SMU you're going to get a very different Beast with Baylor coming to town although I think everybody kind of looks at this one and goes yeah Baylor and Dave Randa I mean look at the very least this is a guy who knows defense very well calls defense very well and that Baylor team has just been all over the place between winning a big 12 Championship what was it JJ three years ago 2021 2021 that team was the Champs it's just it's wild to see where they've gone there and then of course last week we haven't been able to chat about it last week we had the benefit of being able to talk about the Utah game that happened on a Thursday but now the by the BYU game on Saturday did not turn out like the like Mitch Harper's uh simul ation of 42 to39 BYU eing out a win over uh s in Illinois although the points were about right Riley your first impressions of uh that Jake redl start and offense first week of uh of the Season albe it against an FCS opponent yeah I mean BYU is probably tops in the country at uh at optimism and hope and finding every reason that they that they need's going with this is there a category for that where's the I'm trying to find the NCAA uh trophy at the end of the uh record book I mean last week we were on here Utah played on a Thursday and I was like I don't know what do you know them beating up on suu who to me look like and we talked about the dynamic that every FCS school is even been more pillaged for talent than they have in the past I felt kind of a similar thing for Southern Illinois um funny enough I actually went back and and looked so you know 202 passer rating and they were doing a stat line I was like okay what is like jiren and Zach and taes and even going back to like me and Max like what do we do against rfcs and like honestly 200 passive rating is about what you should be so like uh that that's kind of in the neighborhood of of where he should so good he he he kind of met the standard against an FCS opponent and let's see if he can carry it over against division one which I know we're going to get in talk more BYU but I one of the worst things one of my biggest critiques about college football as us as fans and even us as media that we do is put way too much weight on what happened last year I watched SMU in week zero against Nevada and I got some thoughts thoughts that give me even more C again we're the best in the country at ca for hope they give me cause for Hope despite being 11 and a half Point dog it is look there are very few teams in the country that are able to have the type of consistency that Utah does and that's one of the things where you go well all we have to go off is last year and they played phenomenally well except for the fact that they didn't have good quarterback play and then the quarterback comes back and cam Rising look you know through five touchdowns uh in the first half and then you're going okay then they're then they're fully back but you're right and this is why we have a hard time handicapping the the NFL we talked about this yesterday SL I was like you can't you what that's why we came up with the weirdest picks of our AFC and NFC champ yours are weird mine are fine oh you had the commanders almost in the Super Bowl basically no I did not I said they're going to be a lot better there's a lot of people on the command oh my gosh it's because look everyone here's the here's the problem people are going well Jaden Daniels is just going to be this year CJ Shrout like they just AO like make the make the equation over to the oh yeah it's going to work out now of course the Brian Johnson part of the equation too that makes you go he's got a hold of a guy that he feels like he could probably take places and he's taken a lot of quarterbacks good places right right there's a ton to to break into here so let's let's first jump in here with the University of Utah and I don't know I I I that game last year we made the mistake of of play of replaying it on on uh from the DVR in the studio or something like we were watching it and and we're like hey yeah get the Baylor and Utah game up let's you know kind of see what're what we're looking at here and we I mean by the end we were drooling and we were just like thousand yards stare it was an awful awful game by both teams on the offensive side of things I think it was like it was like 10 to three or 9 to3 or something like that right before the half and then I think Utah had three points even through quarters four quarter it wasn't until the 8 minute drive in the fourth quarter had to make some big plays in the fourth quarter to save them and then Nate Johnson had to come Utah offense was putrid you literally had one offensive drive in that game and we ended up coming up with the w so in the end you were on the field for that one Sly was that a that was a nice cool day for you is that one of the days you wore all black no it was all red but what didn't make a difference no I think it was like 140 150 on the turf on the tur crazy well and this one's going to be a Mata kind of a midday deal and I know it's only going to be 90° versus the 110 that it can be in Texas but that still means turf's going to be triple digits yes it's going to be a hot one and the middle of the day games are weird for Utah I'm not going to buy fully into the day games they do poorly in but I I do think that they they benefit from playing in the evenings but the MAA type of game middle of the day sun right out your thoughts on Baylor coming to town and and and what they have to prove because they're trying to keep their coach and he's trying to keep his job and Utah obviously just wants to keep rolling Well everybody's on the hot seat right like everybody's got something to prove each and every year I think coach Winningham is probably uh one of the only coaches that are just like oh I'm good you know you're not going to get rid of me I'm good but um one everybody likes to win um and so but Baylor I think they got a lot to proof one from the performance last year they didn't feel like they played great you know we were down cam Rising had a terrible offensive performance and they couldn't come with through with the w so they feel like they got something to prove um but I think they're much improved this year than they were uh a year before as well you know they got quick more athletic people which Utah's got to be that much more focused and so um that's what I'm going to be paying attention to tomorrow is Utah's focus and uh you know a deeper opponent it gets harder and harder every week um and so you know just seeing how Utah handles that you can't even look at last year's game you really can't and both teams are so different personel different quarterbacks different Personnel play calling will be different different circumstances there's been so much change it's crazy how much change Utah's had since that game and Baylor as well and so you see you have Baylor bringing in dequon Finn who's a completely different quarterback than the ones they ran back last year to Alex's Point earlier in in the show when we started like you you don't have anything else to go on except what you've already seen and what you've witnessed but you you can't base anything off of what happened last year I mean Cole Bishop was a hero of that game he's not going to save Utah this time around right so you know you have you have different uh degrees in variances there but ultimately it's a new season it's new teams it's really hard to gauge which is why I think it's so exciting sly because you get to find new Heroes who who who is Utah we didn't find out last week that was about them getting their feet wet and figuring some things out and getting some rust off we we're going to learn who Utah is on Saturday and and I absolutely love it and I've seen the energy uh this week from the team uh defensively they got to lock in you know CU I think that you know coach Whittingham hit it when we when we played his little statement in the beginning is like we got less and less possessions so everything is that much more magnified you know this is more of a NFLs type of flow of the game and so your defensive uh possessions are going to be important just as much as your offensive possessions and getting cam Rising the ball and his ability to uh get um all these Playmakers we have on offense the ball is great but I think we are we're going to find out who truly is going to be that playmaker throughout the season that we can rely on Riley brought up this point last week too with BYU where it was you know or with Utah rather when they played against Southern Utah and I was like yeah you win all these you win these games and you you put up 49 points basically in the first you know two quarters and and then the rest of the game and those all happen on big plays so you have massive plays so so the touches don't look all the total plays aren very much and so there are some games where you look at and Baylor had a little bit of that situation last week where they score they're up 28 nothing at the half and then they score on their first possession the second half and so it's 35 to zero Charlton puts a a field goal up and and then but you don't have a lot because dayquan Finn did not have a phenomenal day the guy threw for 192 yards two touchdowns two picks that's that's always one that you go why are you throwing interceptions against Tarlton State and again your defense bails you out because Tarlton can't move the football against the Bor team down there Waco but I I don't know like from week to week we wonder about what these are going to look like but certainly from an FCS standpoint you you don't know what you're going to get because they're going to bust out totally different things right like on from an offensive perspective it's not going to be as as it was in week one they've said as much in every uh with every team this week who played a lesser opponent they said we're going to we're going to bust a a few more things out and so you don't show very much of what your offense is I'm assuming and then week two I don't know how how long does it take to roll out exactly what you want to do as an offense we saw a lot of A-Rod last week he was running trick plays against uh Southern Illinois so yeah which I thought was an interesting choice honestly it's it's three weeks four weeks uh Personnel groupings you're trying to figure out um and I didn't uh I maybe have to rely on sler I I don't know where if there were any big U position battles on the offensive line you're still trying to figure out who your best five are there and where they fit sometimes you got a guy who's sitting there as a backup tackle and you're like you know what we're going to throw him in a guard because our guard's not getting it done so you're figuring that stuff I know I know their skill is pretty um pretty set on offense but uh it's that and we did see a lot of keithy and um and ryzen kind of get the Gang back but he needs to find second and third options which uh who's the speeder yeah Stanley like showed some flash there but haven't seen it under the bright lights so all those still things like can that relationship or that connection between uh rising and Stanley be has that hasn't been pressure tested yet so it's getting its first test here in week two uh for me by by four weeks like you're rolling you kind of know who you are you know who your guys are going to be you know who you can count on third downs and in the red zone and in key situations but until then you're still just feeling it out it honestly it's like it's a 12 round season just like a 12 round heavyweight fight those first three or four are used to you know find your distance and find your timing and so that'll still be going on tomorrow here's what Andy lwig said about his offense uh going into the second game of the year obviously they start to open up the Playbook a little bit more and here's what he said about that and where Baylor is I think we need Improvement in every area I think I stated at the conclusion of fall Camp I'm confident in the direction of the offense and the Improvement that we've shown but in no way me are we comfortable with where we are and good work today and look forward to another day of work tomorrow uh lots of work work work work from Andy lwig that's what they got to do Kyle Whittingham talked about cam rising and and I know that that was something that was nerve-wracking a little bit because there were a couple plays and I think they told he said on film afterward it didn't look nearly as bad but there were some moments where they got a little bit nervous about him running the football and and taking a couple of shots here is what he said about that well I will say this after watching the film it wasn't as bad as I thought thought it was I shouldn't say as bad but he was fairly smart most of the time his competitive mentality comes out you know during those situations often times and he wants to get that extra yard but he's a guy that when he's in the lineup we're obviously a much better football team and so we don't want to beat it to death and make him not they ever be afraid of anything but so concerned about it that it affects his play in other areas and so I thought that after watching the film yeah I wish maybe once or twice he could have you know got a little more out of Harm's Way but he is one of the most competitive guys that you'll ever come across and so it's going to be tough to completely say that hey you're you're never going to do that cuz it's going to happen once in a while I'd love to be described by coach Whittingham Fair smart yeah fairly smart most of some of the time He pry got a fairly there's there's a there's a little more to that fairly in there so I I want to know when you see on film a guy like dcoin Finn who was it somebody at the beginning of the year said dcoin Finn's going to be like a was it a preseason or was somebody put him in like the as like the the best somebody had him righted ahead of Cam RIS yeah it was so weird I couldn't believe it but B Homer they talk about the Dual threat thing and uh when you're trying to prepare for a guy like him who hopes that you that you're going to kind of get maybe maybe he actually looks to run a little bit more in those situations uh how do you prepare for that and this this one of those deals where they go okay look we're just going to have a spy all day on this guy well no I mean cuz everybody can have their day right you know there could be a day where daquan's arm is just actually hitting and his accuracy and all of that but the key thing is for guys like him you got to keep him under duress right so having a spy isn't always great but getting him out of the pocket seeing if he can uh make those accurate throws on the run as we said we got uh two interceptions last week against Tarlton State and that's just something that you know you shouldn't have to do in those games you should emphasize taking care of the football and uh and he wasn't maybe he was trying to take risk open things up it's so hard to really gauge where your team is at against those FCS opponents um so there's not a lot you can take from that but yes he is extremely athletic you want to have a spy each and every play cuz you don't want to have a guy beat you with his legs as I.E Anthony Richardson you know two years ago down in the swamp um we win that game you know he doesn't do those things with his legs and so you want to make him pass you know we are talented on the back end we have athletic corners and safeties and if we can uh have enough pressure up front uh we should be able to sack him you know and uh you know Riley can speak to this from the quarterback back perspective um you're not great if you're one-dimensional you make it easy on the defense at being onedimensional honestly that is exactly what we want to do as Defenders we want to make them onedimensional make them half to pass so that we can pin our ears back we can Blitz the crap out of them we could play uh safe tough on the back end eyes on the ball and and and create more turnovers that way so uh making dcoin Finn onedimensional by passing the ball and knowing that his legs isn't going to get it done he's not Lamar Jackson um is is what we'd want to do on the defensive side of the ball uh is it uh is the offensive coordinator is it spavital is that how you say it yeah I've heard his name before so gr's not there anymore yeah so um so three years ago in 2016 which by the way that's what it feels like not eight years ago right three years ago in 2016 no but he was the LC coach I I cuz I I knew Grimes had left I didn't know who had replaced him and so anyway this guy was at Cal when an unranked Cal came in and and uh kind of snake bit spal was the OC QB coach granted they had Davis Webb and Cy had a good set of wide receivers that year but like he dialed up some touchdowns his touchdown throws that this is an unreal stat line and that was a that was a decent defense for Utah back in 2016 and they were ranked 18th in this game but he dialed up a touchdown passes of 42 39 48 and then 21 yards so Davis and and Cal was able to win that game 20 28 24 so was that that wasn't that wasn't that was in ber I was that was in bery Z Moss the goal line I believe I bet I bet all dozen people were shocked the 500 fans there went crazy there more people on the dirt hill behind the stadium than they on 50 fans rush the field my point to that is it it's uh you know spout it's it's the players on the field but also do the coaches have Mojo and do they have any kind of familiarity or confidence coming to this in their ability to to dial up so I you know I'm not saying that that gives him the edge but if Utah's got to be resilient because they're going to face an OC you talked about rodri dialing up against Southern Illinois going to yeah going to come in and dial up some stuff and they may get a cheap one or two against Utah and then in the midday you know if you're bayor you're like hey you know it's the old Bane quote they're they were they've adopted the heat but we were born in it sort of thing you know being on the you've only adopted the dog I was born in it you pretty good that's great good that's great so so you got that plus a r you know Aranda's Utah state has said many times how much he admires coach Whit I think uh you know Baylor could could pose a a unique situation uh we got to take a break we'll come back we've got tons to talk about today across the board Utah BYU Utah State we've got tons to jump into we uh obviously are going to get you ready also for BYU versus SMU that's actually going to be a 5:00 kickoff so we'll get more into that next hour we've got tons to go on the program Stevenson Sylvester Riley Nelson Jeremiah Denson myself Alex kiry thanks for joining us it's a football Friday we'll come back more to go around the corner 975 KSL Sport Zone it's a Friday and we're talking football nonstop stop all football all the time this is another edition of football Friday with JJ and Alex presented by G2G bars on 975 the KSL Sports Z Smith Snowden is is one of our top two corners right now so he will be on the field pretty much every snap Scooby Davis has done a nice job and we'll figure in uh John Randall has made a lot of progress in the last 3 weeks since we made that switch three or four weeks so he'll be in the mix as well and cam Calhoun that's a guy that we missed for gosh about a month uh during fall camp and and sum of the sum that is back now full speed he's in the mix as well all right everybody Welcome Back JJ and Alex 975 ekl Sports Zone oh my goodness I didn't even say where we were today probably better so that the uh the fans stay off a Sly just like oh where is he where is he and I'm like in all black all black he's wearing all black gosh I don't know like what are we going to do we're at we're we're at West Jordan High School this is my first time uh out at the Jaguar Stadium here it is West Jordan versus Orum that is your Game Night Live game of the week and Jeremiah and Sly going to be on the call of course tonight I have no idea what to anticipate in this game I know orm is undefeated but it's like they've kind of eak out a couple of week what do you guys uh they had to come from behind the last two weeks you guys did some uh you guys have had to do some homework on this thing so give me an idea on how uh how this one's going to go tonight I just think we got two of the best teams in 5A this year uh West Jordan has picked to win their region this year region uh uh four and uh they've got a lot of talent here and they had a really nice game last week I come from behind win I think they're trying to figure themselves out a little bit they uh had some heartbreaking losses week one and two but uh they have the talent to win in this region and to be a factor in the playoffs and Orum I mean if you followed High School football in this state for the last decade you know the or tigers tigers you know what they've accomplished uh they won four straight state titles uh they're they're trying to get back to that level they got a lot of Talent on that team uh player to watch tonight is uh Kai Wesley he's he's been a baseball and aot basketball star his uncles played one Uncle played at BYU and then one Uncle played at State and they were they played professional basketall nephew yes yeah um he's just a junior he's new to football but he's already got offers from by you know what I mean like you'll see him tonight he's a freak so orm has some freaks and you'll you'll see them on theplay tonight some guys that are on the recruiting radar so if you're into that sort of thing and some potential future cougars so uh both teams are really talented should be a great game tonight Alex permission to take a Utah preps where are they now D or should I say that later in the show did it last week you can do whatever you want it was more off air it actually is the thing that people ask for the most yeah I saw I saw I saw my two burner accounts asking the r account about that on the show no so I found out seei foko right formerly of the bright Mangal he's still in the league still in the in the Chargers and I started looking and my brother reminded me he would he put up like he had one of the best combines uh for for white outs a few years ago when he was coming out of Stanford I mean that was kind of the problem he went to Stanford fell off you get sort of lost in that yeah you get lost and then he came back when hard Kno was back with the Cowboys but since we're talking about Oram MH and it was interesting cuz like puka was the opposite puka was not a combine guy but then obviously was right there with CJ strad to be that but probably the two best receiving products that have probably ever come out of Utah definitely in the last 10 years I'd say so yes but uh but they were both a problem in high school obviously seia at Brighton and puka at orm but where would you go I mean I don't know both miss her football they both yeah but my point part that prestigious class it was like but I just feel like puka was like strike fear to that next I don't know they're both players and maybe it's because seei went off to college somewhere else maybe I don't have as much feel for him there is a there is a part where I think it happens mostly just because we don't follow like who follows Stanford and especially well and especially when they're not good right like when they're winning three and four games yeah and and so simy had like a real that that was the thing is like we watch him because we're like we know how good he was we knew he committed and I think and he was a mission kid too right so so those those are all the things that add up to like you sort of being like out of side out of mind but you know that they that they have uh that you know simy went to be while you were Utah he'd beeh name we'd have similar conversation but what puka did in his first year in the NFL I think has really taken you know how it works right yeah but at the same time I he was not to say he wasn't a star at BYU or orm or anything but you become an NFL superstar and it's like oh puka you know what I mean like it just blows you up and people start thinking that I mean they ele you become elevated in the minds of everybody because of what you do on that stage the greatest stage they both a problem yeah when they were here both incredible you I agree Riley two best receivers in State history it's it's not even close Scooby Davis by the way Scooby Davis by the way did not make all name team in the NCAA because you have they left out his middle name if they would have given the full name they just saw Elijah on the roster I was like no that's not good enough his middle name do hi middle name do uh no it's because there are guys like General booty still in the game oh God these are still names okay how is General booty still on a roster I know it's like the kid from uh it's like the kid from Miami is in his ninth year of Eligibility and what's funny is he's not he's still not as old as taes was when he got out because I'm I'm not kidding he he's ta didn't rec class but he was about as old as you could be for your grade without having to reclassify and then the mission yeah oh it's so booty Rowdy beers these are real players by the way these are the all this is the all offense dois Crawford dois dois uh fat Watts it is it is latch fat Watts out of tane Jaden muskrat now this is Yo the last names can't be nicknames or made up some of these like I don't know if his his actual birth certificate name is fat but muskrat you're not making up it's fat with a p no no no you're not fat with a pH by the way so Jaden muskrat King large again large is your last name right but you can't be king and large hey man you got a good last name you gotta play with you gotta have a good first name to go with hold on the center of the team is Parker titsworth uh Dodge saer hands Hammer now that's a pretty darn good one hand Hammer but this your all defense I can't even say the first one it's a cuss word okay demon Clowney is he related is he related he has to be right let's assume he is demon Clowny blazing Lola Wong memorable Factor that's a name that's a name what memorable fact he plays for Duke he's a he's an edge wrester from duke uh chief chief borders now this one I hate okay m o so Mo and his last name's ability Mobility oh okay I don't these are not made up and I bet he's not even Mobile AL he got tight hips got he's a corner he's a corner he's got to have it this Mobility kid like I like his drive but he got tight I don't know if we can get the Ben put him on the o line rack Alex major Burns all right is that simpsons's guy that would have been so much better it's his brother it's his brother so you got you got Mr BS and you major grandon yeah okay this one I hate pig cage pig pig cage and then storm duck out of Louisville so those are your uh those are your all name teams that's so what you're saying is Key and Pill weren't far off no this I'm not I'm not kidding this is these are real names in college football right now d d CW see how Scooby didn't make list I know so now you now you kind of get the idea all right so you've got game two uh what happens and we'll get more into it with uh in the in the third hour with uh with Utah but I was just wondering what Keenan Johnson being out means for the Youth sly because I I'm I'm looking at this and I'm going okay uh Morgan scall got on and T and he and he named off a hundred guys which is great because you know the depth at Utah is always going to be good but what what's the reality of what that does for that secondary first quarter of the first game of the year they had such a good camp of keeping guys healthy and then Keenan Johnson's out for the year well I mean yeah that's it's a huge blow because you invest so much especially in the transfer guys as far as time and understanding the defense you know there's guys who lack in that kind of uh coaching Mentor learning the defense aspect because you're trying to get this new guy so ready to go and he's out in the first game of the year so that sucks but you know what this just looks like is you just got to move guys around we had this with Pittsburgh where we had to play three Safety Systems we had to play um you know with Ryan Mundy Will Allen Troy pal Malo Ryan Clark we have four safeties in at a time when we when we had down corners or something like that so you got to do that and you know instantly right after the game you know coach R talking about we'll just move TL Johnson back down to Nickel back down the corner and make that happen we got aliky Gilman Nate Richie we got some viable guys at the safety position to make that happen um but you you put guys in who know the defense right and and the problem is is like there's so many different nuances with defense because we're reaction right we're we're looking at the offense and we're reacting So within one defensive call could be eight to diff eight to 10 different variables of things that you have to do and the communication is huge right when Utah's defense is lacking when we were like a couple years ago we weren't playing that well you could see the communication wasn't there and so now uh I think they just understand that so with new guys coming in younger guys coming in you have to really make sure that communic ation is on point between the linebacker and Corner Nicholls safety everybody has to be on top of their PS and q's with communication but they do they got guys to rotate in here we got Cameron coun who's a he's a red shirt freshman from the University of Michigan he was on Michigan's team last year um Smith Snowden is one of those guys that they're like look now that he's in year two and the sky's limit he knows the defense now oh he's so smart I I mean well one we we noticed in in high school how smart Smith Snowden was and he plays that Nick of position which is even harder but him rotating out to a corner position is actually easy and that's what I would do I would rotate Smith Snowden out to the corner move Teo down to the uh safety position cuz how we played it um we played two years ago we uh when sonaki and Co Bishop were getting their first um playing times we played a three safety system with r RJ Hubert and the way we rotate down I I said it all the time we got a rock and roll the safeties to where the nickel can roll back to safety and play that like it was his position and with K Johnson moving down to the nickel we can do that we can have Nate Richie um and uh aliki Gilman in and then rotay that back there's different things you can do but we're definitely ready for it I uh it sucks because you don't want to lose talent but at the end of the day kenon Johnson was supposed to be a huge asset that you know next man up mentality which we got tons of experience with here's the truth of that situation okay if you're looking at the schedule right Sly M you're playing Baylor diquan Finn's not going to really challenge the secondary right I mean not to the level that you're like going to be really said that he could have a day he already got us all nervous about it okay so he can have a day we'll see uh the next week after that um you know I don't know who the starting quarterback is going to be for Utah State obviously Jo Jaylen Royals is a problem but you know you I don't think that that's where you're like you're panicking that you don't have the Personnel to handle that experience the week after that is Alan Bowman at Oklahoma State you know what Oklahoma State's going to do they're going to give the ball to doly Gordon it's the week after that it's Arizona T Royal MCM so you've got three games here to figure out how you're going to solve this problem with kenon Johnson now who is who you you need to know who your guys are back there for that game because if you cannot figure out how to defend the pass in that game you're going to take an L against a really good Arizona offense with two the most dynamic Playmakers in the conference so you have three games they're they're not going to admit this but they have three games to get this figured out and get it right before there's a real threat to that backside yeah and what you're saying is experience right and as Riley said mentioned before with game prep you really go back three games and so the last three games you also don't want to put anything out on tape that's going to alert your opponent right so one experience is getting these guys in the game confident to be able to line up against these guys I think when we play T-Mac at down at Arizona I think zamaya Von is a traveler um he's 63 uh Corner that can line up against that 65 body of of Tetro McMillan and and and and so that would be great and then you know you just lock down all the other people on that defense I mean we've done that plenty of different time Drake London down at USC uh when we had Clark Phillips um the guy who played at Oregon State I'm forgetting now um but yeah we we we've got tons and tons of of people that we can rely on to make that happen and three games is plenty enough time to get you the experience that you need to make that happen let's take a break we'll come back we've got some uh we've got all day obviously to still chat about what's going on with uh all these teams next hour we're going to go full deep dive into BYU as it's going to be walking the hour up to BYU versus SMU uh which is an exciting time for us because we we didn't tell him this before he showed up but Sly is basically going to be hosting a cougar pregame show oh no don't do that to me don't do that to me no I'm not it on the resum I'm not I don't need Jeremy getting any more statements about me on this thing all right we're gonna clip it we'll football Fridays of course of course every Friday right here uh this week's setting is West Jordan High School and West Jordan Norm facing off tonight on game9 live you can take a listen on KSL Sports on the app uh KSL sports.com uh so many places to do it be able to hear Sly and JJ on the call uh let's talk a little bit of Utah State here by the way next week JJ and I are going to be at the Utah RV Super Show on Thursday don't want to miss it that's one of our favorite places to go you get it's a blast it is really cool you wander around these RVs you're like I'll never buy an RV and then you walk in there and you go how much did you say it was a month jeez told you that's my retirement go so the Utah rvy Super Show September 12th through the 15th at M America Expo Center that's where we're going to be next week all right let's jump into a little bit of Utah state from last week they beat Robert Morris after Spencer petus goes down with the sprain ankle but it was it's enough or it's it's a it's a small enough injury according to to the reports that it's up in the airist to who the quarterback is going to be at the very least they're going to make it sound like that because you don't want to tell USC exactly who your quarterback is going to be we brought it up all week Bryson Barnes beat this team last week makes sense right it makes sense and why would you and then also for dang sure you got to make sure he's the starting quarterback against Utah right like if there's a guy who knows what's going on there at that uh he's gonna play any games this year make it those two make it those two make it those two now I don't know because at the same time the comparisons of well he went in and beat UFC last year I hate that because it's a way different team this is that's not fair to him it's not fair to him and on top of it like uh USC is also a very different team I yes they are yeah I I think as soon as you as soon as you saw that Alex Grinch was subtracted and added was Deon Lynn as the as the defensive coordinator like you saw they were the harder hitting team out of LSU and UFC last week which is shocking to me because they we knew they had the athletes but they did not have the coach to unlock these athletes in I don't think we've seen a USC team play that physical since the p carera good for them man good for them so yeah it is good for them uh so you saw last week Robert Morris I think were they leading at half yes was it they leading at the half uh Bryson Barnes comes in after Spencer petus goes down the Aggies rack up 630 is yards of offense and uh 300 plus of it on the ground it's it was a good offensive day but I think people sort of went ah but it was a slow start you lose your quarterback the Highlight was the interception right the for the other team was was that Robert Morris uh pick um so what are your first impressions I guess Riley now you see kind of the at the very least it's complicated at quarterback because you know you got you got one who may be injured or maybe not or whatever it is but you're going on to USC and that that USC team is they have a buy next week too by the way which is not a great time for a buy week but it's not a good time for a bu week for U for Utah State either because they're going to put it out there against these guys so honestly it's kind of full circle moment and by the way I find a way in every segment to talk about local products and their impact on the game of football no I mean Sly I'm sure uh up at Utah you have guys on there that uh you uh you get out to camp and you're like and you got to go over to the coach and be like tell me did we did we offer this kid and they're like oh no his grandpa is X or his dad anyway kyrese white son of former Aggie great EMT white was who was at Utah for for I think three years uh just couldn't break the depth jart Roy High School gradu but you talked about Jaylen Royals he is a legit slot threat up there in that offense they lost Briggs with the broken leg on on uh as their as the change of pace back with fison at running back that was that rushing attack was looking great but bottom line like the offense is is as good ever petus had a slow start Sly I don't know um did you play did you ever play against a college quarterback who could truly manipulate the game from the from the pocket I I you see that in the pros where they can really get to their checkdowns and the balls out but that's what petus was trying to do at the beginning of that game and it ended up in two picks and like 50% completion percentage do you ever remember playing against someone in college that had that level of ability yeah the only guy was uh was probably my senior year we played Andy Dalton who did a really good job and and I talk about this I say it so much is pre- snap you know your your pre- snap readability and and understanding what's going on the possibilities and being able to get from um your one to two progression quick um but no against our defense we did a great job with disguising that nobody was able to really understand what we were doing and so if that's going to be the case then a guy like Bryson Barnes who's willing to get out of the pocket go take I call it take green grass right procket breaks down and rather than like trying squeezing a ball in a tight window or throwing it to a covered check down he just goes and gets four or in his case goes and get yeah 67 right when he broke out on that that was just man coverage and the safety carried the number two vertical to the right side of the field he's escaped out the pocket to the left and won the foot race so offens look great second thing I I'll just say is uh that the agie defense like played with a lot of emotion they're not they're not very big but they got guys who for the most part played assignment assignment sound and similar to what you were saying with USC the most physical like that Aggie that that energy and the Buy in from that defense while they may not be as talented or have as much size as you'd like uh if they can stay healthy in these next two matchups with USC Utah I like their chances I mean I'm not saying they're the favorite in the Mountain West but I like their chances to at least make some noise think can build confidence too off of these two games you know hopefully get a win against USC and you know you know uh stay competitive against Utah not Utah that's a home game slide for the for the aies come on no I JJ we called the call up there last year I love that Stadium that's nice it is and hopefully they wear the the cow helmets oh I love those did you guys ever like Utah State are four touchdown dogs in this one did you ever play I don't I can't imagine you either of you ever playing in a first start ever won we were 28 and a half Point dogs to Fresno State my first start up at you that's crazy we won uh did you guys that's probably you lose idah the next week SS crazy I got thrown in fourth quarter hey I threw a touch and ran for a touch being down 41 we were down 41 nothing to Idaho going in the fourth quarter like that's it get in there they literally just pulled my red shirt I didn't no reps no nothing that crazy that's probably one of my favorite accomplish pment is win and when we were 28 and a half Point dogs we deserve to be 28 and a half Point dogs probably but that's why you play the game that's why you play the game yeah play kind win the game no I mean the next two weeks they're going to be four touchdown dogs probably the next two the next two games which is a weird place to be in especially when you're at home but you know whether or not whether or not they could I made that dumb prediction I say that dumb one because you know everything changed for Utah State obviously in the offseason I this is not me dogging on on dring too we've talked about how much we love what his attitude has been approaching this whole thing and you said it too Riley their offense is is just as good as we've ever seen they have as they have as good a talent as you can probably get up there and they kept dudes when they could have definitely just blitzed right and so uh seeing this game on a you know down there at USC it's it's a tough one for them to take yeah well I didn't put my finger on it but now that you say it it that defense looks like there's Buy in there despite all the turmoil and despite Anderson even despite all that stuff like there's there's a buying on that sideline I'm not saying that it's going to make the difference in this game but like w with the way that that offense can kind of get sneaky on you and if USC has a little bit of a lull after going you know they're going from playing National that like being the premier game on Sunday night replacing the NFL against LSU to like who the hell are the Aggies and what are these cow helmets I'm seeing on Mountain Time 800 p.m. Pacific they're not even used to that yeah I so you know you catch them a little bit sleepy and it maybe at least get a cover or two and and maybe scare the uh Trojans for a half let's take a break we'll come back we've got more right around the corner we're going to get our BYU uh pregame show underway with with pregame show host yeah BYU pregame show co-host Stevenson now listen here's the thing here's the thing Sly it's on the resume now people can never take that away from you all right if there's ever anything you don't want on your resume all right we'll take the break we back heard you do love the upside of the BYU is K oh my goodness K there's uh there's a lot going on we've got tons it's a football Friday stay tuned more to go 975sl Sports Zone I actually love the promise of BYU basketball it's game day for the Cougars and it's time to get you ready for kickoff deep one here trying to get JoJo Phillips how about a big TouchDown for BYU and retof talking about the expectations for this team he said nobody he's got him except us said 4 and a half that's the win total projection for us that's ridiculous as he fires over the middle another touchdown pass matava T hauls it in for six more red Lashley he's an amazing coach he knows how to run an offense call a game and and run a program so I think he's one of the best coaches in college football he's done a great job with that program it's going to be tough for us to go in there and then play against them but we have to get some things fixed in order for us to be at our best I know that they have a really explosive team and and and and are favorite in this game so you know this is an opportunity for our guys to get in there and figure out ways to get better and improve you can already tell they're much improved from a year ago really explosive on offense can run it and throw it quarterback's playing great and defensively they're big UPF front they got a really good pass rusher off the edge and I think their linebackers are much improved from a year ago clean up the little things the little mistakes that aren't Amplified against the team like that and that will be Amplified against an ACC opponent I know every position has their little things that they need to prove on and communication and stuff like that in the game everything's a little faster and so getting used to that is definitely a big deal and something that I think will be better in week two for us very good defense very athletic they know what they're doing they're really good at their system excellent team I mean it's a big step up from what we had to deal with last week and we got a big Challenge on our hands all the insight and Analysis you need to get you ready for another edition of cougar football this is the cougar pregame show on 975 the KSL Sports Z Saturday morning cartoons is what this remind me oh football Friday is converted into a an extension of the cougar pregame show which of course because it's a Friday exactly happy Ducks coming around right now oh my God it's not that far off you're right Stevens and Sylvester of course with us here as we uh as we bring you the cougar pregame show right here JJ of course myself Alex cury and then of course Riley Nelson former Bo quarterback so there's a lot going on here and because it is a game day and because we're an hour before kickoff it is our uh we're going to be doing we we were going to be doing BYU preview stuff anyway okay so this works out this works out Sly the fact that it's branded as as the uh cougar pregame show just I don't like it you don't like the direction that the show's going uh changed the title listen you get a look the UTS get a nice Premier 5:00 as should So you you're going to be in a good spot as they should uh all right right off the bat you heard a couple things in there uh Jake red SLA talking about you know uh what this team did on offense one I guess what were you surpris we we all assumed it was going to be Jake redl right I mean that was kind of the that was the the badly kept secret I think that it ended up saking out it was it was not a very well-kept secret but um oh by the way our PR brought to you by G2G bars all natural ingredients and no preservatives make the G2G bar a perfect protein bar for you check it out Costco holiday oil Maverick Associated Foods uh and this hour also brought to you by the folks at the Doug Smith dealerships in American Fork and Spanish Fork nobody knows service like Doug Smith knows cars in American Fork and Spanish Fork all right that stuff's out of the way and we're back on to to what this BYU team let's start at first with what they did last week uh Riley what was the what was your impression I guess of watching Jake red SLA getting that start uh BYU putting up 527 yards of offense they didn't even eclipse the 400 yard Mark even against an FCS opponent and a newly minted FBS team in Sam Houston State last year so your impressions of week one even though you know some people might be holding their their judgment totally until you get a few games under your belt it's clear to me and uh and I said in the last week's show I'm not a fan of the FCS games but if you're going to do it then like let's do it it was clear to me that that was the plan coming out from coach satake to coach rodri to even coach Hill is like if we're going to play Let's Play you talked about and slides talked about putting stuff on tape but I think Rod wasn't scared about putting some of those trick plays because those are going to be in his game plan I feel I feel like if yeah I was going to say if he would if he has one critique of himself over his tenure as offensive coordinator it's been when he's like he's been like ah you know what we should rein that in that I think that's part of who he is I think that energizes him during the gameweek prep like that that it also energizes his staff it Fosters creativity excitement and energy and so that was the plan out there and it gave confidence to a guy I mean there's nothing better than for a guy who's spent the whole entire offseason mired in controversy and doubt and people sharing opinions on either for or against uh to come out and light up the stat sheet so uh that looked like it was clear from the GetGo I think that came from the head coach down rodk executed on the uh on the game plan and then or meaning put the game plan into implementation and then red executed on it so I think it was was uh good all around Riley when you the quarterback of BYU and you're having success and you're winning you're like the most popular guy in town and when things aren't going well it can get pretty rough right so you've been in those shoes what do you imagine it was like for Jake rof comparing it to your own experience the ups and downs the highs and lows because it didn't start off great for him here and on four it was it it was rough a lot of people made some judgments about him all of us that's what we saw that's what was on tape how do you think it was for him in the off season because he's obviously handled it the right way at least based on what we saw in game one to be able to overcome a lot of that negativity and to improve and get better and win that job I hope it kept his collar hot you know throughout the I think it was an overall good thing football is a game where you can't like you can be a good sport but like you kind of you gota you got to have an edge to you and I feel like as long as he didn't start feeling sorry for himself which I don't think there were any indications that he did I think it probably made him better it probably fueled him and and uh some we saw some of that pent out come out next week but this is going to be the first you know first test I know that it's their first uh opportunity in P4 but now they are a P4 opponent and the ACC is crazy as that sounds and you went 0 and four uh in your starts against your own conference opponents which has been your only exposure against P4 so all right you proved you can actually play right meaning you came out and lit did what you were supposed to do against an FCS now prove what you're really hired to do and that's go out and get P4 wins it's an interesting thing too because you know the the part of and you brought it up too where you go look we Bas so much of how the team is going to perform this year off of last year right you just go oh last year this happened and people for sure if that's the case they did it with Jake red slap where they go well it's hard to divorce yourself from the feelings that that that he created of a pick six at the end of I'm guilty of it I know we that's all you have the ball off you're on the one right was it don't say that to a Seahawks fan I was say don't do that don't do that so but yeah I mean you Sly you tell me I mean like when when somebody goes here's how you are and then the next year comes around and you you hear all that stuff in the offseason you know what kind of except for Utah right you know we all we had going on last year at Utah Utah can uh literally change the whole narrative in in the whole offseason we were getting Dorian Zinger we're getting all these uh assets in the offseason so but the Hope was cam rising's back we don't have to think about qu situation right so situations like that but like literally redoff last year I I I think he was at a disadvantage honestly you know uh with what he had to play against you know playing against uh Ken slovis he didn't get a fair shake at at the whole deal they was doing quarterback battles all throughout the year and so finally at the end of the season where they're just like just give it to him you know he he he started to show a little light in in in the bottle there and so um this year and I think he's got more grasp of the system with other quarterbacks who didn't have his type of experience in the system he kind of had a leg up and he's actually making it making it known having 350 yards last week I think it was great to get your feet wet and and yeah as we said this is where as Riley said this is where it actually matters right start getting these P4 wins so people can have confidence in your football team a couple of notes on this game hey Jeremy do you have off the top of your head what the line is on this game not why do you assume that n listen I'm just wondering we need the help of a degenerate has it moved has it I know it's still double digits but has it moved one way or the other it was it was around that 14 point last 12 and a half it was two days ago it was 10 and a half okay it's moved up I think it's 13 as of today you I know 12 and a half wow so it's moving the other direction it is it moved up even that that oil money is heavy on the STS on the ponies they call hats on the sidelines for this one listen I picked to win this game before the season again based on what we saw last year we have no nothing Riley's bringing up Riley you're bringing up some great points like who they beat last year was nothing special they really struggled against Nevada what I saw BYU week one yes it was against the FCS opponent but there was a lot to like right I can still say osu's at home the I love the quarterback the tight end's a star the defense is really good but like on paper this is not a this should not be a 10 and a half or a 13 and a half spread I uh on if you just Google a team and schedule results on Google like you to like scroll back and I kept scrolling back so their last well I scrolled all the way back to 2018 one P5 win they beat their cross town rival TCU by seven in the year that TCU went 2- 10 and finished 12th in the Big 12 and you know what's interesting too is that's their one P5 win in the last five years you want to hear a worse one too uh because that that game was actually in Fort Worth they haven't won a power four game against an opponent at home since 10 so they haven't so they haven't won so so that's 14 years of not winning a game at home against a power power and and look and and I'm telling you a lot of it is based off of the fact that and and and I don't know I've heard this way too much this week people are like yeah but Nevada's gotten way better this year Bob I'm like really have they they sure didn't show it in the fourth quarter of that game when they showed complete ineptitude right penalties three and outs they that I watched that cuz it was week zero there was nothing else on and you watch that game it's in Reno and I was just baffled as that game was coming to a close the Muff catch the one oh my go did not win that football game Nevada lost it so like I I don't know I but the betting lines are the betting look BYU also didn't prove anything to you either so like this is almost a re I know it's smu's third game because they played the week zero and week one and it's only BYU's 2 but this is really week one of real football for both of these teams so truly anything can happen I have my feelings and I have my judgments on what I've seen of each of these teams of the small sample size but the reality is it's very intriguing and in 40 minutes we're going to start finding out what each team is really made of I'll say this this is a massive opportunity tonight for bye we talk about the disrespect of the line a lot of people pick an SMU they can if they go down there and really really have some great success like not just win but win convincingly it's going to change a lot of Minds around the country not just around here about who BYU is and what they can do this year they will earn a lot of respect by going down there and winning tonight if they can do it and one of the things I want to see really quick I I'll give you was that noise no last thing I'll say uh well maybe last thing maybe not but um they're they do have legit speed like I wasn't impressed with the execution of the offense but those wide receivers are the types of wide receivers that you're going to find throughout the Big 12 that that have caused they caused Bo problems last year and they have perennially caused problems I want to see my biggest thing coming into this season is much uh attention and erir as the quarterback battle sucked up I wanted to see if Jay Hills defense will take not a step a leap from year one to year two early indications are promising but I think there's going to be a real test more so of the secondary and in an offense that tends to get the ball out quick a lot of lateral throws can that pass rush stay engaged and take advantage of opportunities uh to make the quarterback's life hard okay slide to with the what was you you said put the nation on notice I don't know about that because they could L notice I said people will people will notice BYU Nation maybe that's okay okay okay that's different that's different the that are down on the preseason hope we're there but you know how it is too smu's a team that a lot of people are on this year yes we just talked goes down there win you know competition in the last decade but they can't but but right they but they had allir but they had in front of them exactly what their schedule was which is light which is light every year yeah you have to do what you got to but they they've won 11 games two out of the last three years continue to pile on though I'm sorry know I love it also like I'm trying to think of an equivalent outside where it's like guys come on let me into the party no man no we're not inviting come on I I'll okay I'll pay for everybody's cover charges and I'll bring the booze like they the only way they got into the ACC was like we won't take a share we'll pay for ourselves yeah hey hey Jeremy get that drop of Riley saying bring the Boost it will now be it will be played right next to s's comments about B that's the only way I want to hear but but to that point it's like all right 11 11 in the last two years but the reality is they're only in the ACC because they're like oh Dallas is a nice recruiting Market in ACC we don't have a foothold in Texas sure SMU you can come in but you're you're a second class citizen yeah and and you know I think it was uh Billy embody who we had on yesterday who covers SMU was like great he goes hey yeah people are saying that but the reality is there they're not taking zero dollars what they're taking is like this really minor cut which is still doubling what they were getting in the a in the in the AAC that's what's crazy about they go from 7even million they go 7even million a year in their TV rights deal to they get like I think it's like 14 or 15 uh something like that so they they still get better money than they did but yeah they get like the they get their share of the additional money but they don't get bought in in the existing pie I think is how I think and is it is it 12 or 15 it's like 10 or 15 years something really stupid like they were able it's like back you could buy a house like 5 years ago where where the seller was like you just take everything please just like uh I'll pay the closing cost I'll do all the things you can't that was take it off my right it's just what the market bore at that point for for the ACC who was like I don't know I guess we'll take Stanford take Cal would you rather be SMU right now or Washington State and Oregon State and that's a good point I mean I think they did they had to do they had they had to do whatever it took to get into that power for status and to that and to that point Utah State I mean Oregon State and Washington state are the clueless home seller who are like uh we know what we have okay like we don't touch us with all this but but the reality is is that BYU has has gone through something interesting when you brought that up about Jake redl and and what he inherited so to speak which was them getting into the worst part of their schedule uh already into a a a a small losing streak they end up losing the rest of the games and it was and it was obviously Jake redl was wasn't the full problem on offense last year yeah I mean you ask that you ask Conor pay who's very very quick to tell you that they were the problem their offensive line was the was the problem by the way you watch Kingsley Su last night how about that like who where was that guy that just shows you a little bit of the dysfunction of kind of where that offensive line group was at last year which was a mess and and and so try to ask your guys I mean I think there's been a 180 on the attitude change and certainly TJ Woods has helped with that but they've a lot of guys like Connor pay who are like they're asking them to keep their dudes more accountable I think it's going to be an interesting test tonight to see where you're at it's a I think it's a perfect step before you start getting into uh I would have loved to seen the games flip-flopped I would love to see Wyoming this week and then SMU next week and then you start to get into a conference play because I think you're going to get a real test uh tonight that isn't a big 12 test it's certainly not a big 12 test and the ACC is what it is I I I don't know where smu's even at I mean uh Florida state is 0 and2 you know and and way out of the top 25 and Clemson's not very good and you know all the teams we thought were going to be good in the ACC have not been and so it's a it's an interesting time yeah it's an interesting time in the ACC it's not a it's not a strong conference which was good for the Big 12 who were trying to get two teams in the playoff this Miami might be back gosh crystal ball I don't want to give him any credit but let um sorry let's bring it hate BR but I like cam W bring it away from the Atlantic coast back to BYU the other thing is you talked about that and I even remember cuz I played against those Utah teams and we always it was always FR that was part of what contributed nine game losing streak is like we always had to schedule Utah at the beginning I would have loved to have caught Utah all those years on the back when they were making the transition from G5 to P5 because it you don't have that depth yet and you get decimated as year goes on so like if I'm red slap over here I'm like yeah well now I'm playing with the full deck like I got the last four years after we were beat up on a roster that hadn't built up to P5 depth yet and granted you can look well he was playing he was that but they're they're they're nicked they're nicked they're he wasn't playing with the full compliment now he gets to start from the very beginning with everybody's fresh and everybody's healthy and a real chance to prove himself but he's got to keep it rolling again you just can't light it up against FCS got to prove it yeah I mean there's something to say about experience too even the guys I mean you got Chase Robert still Cody Cody EPS you got all of these playmaker Conor pay uh the week to week experience of knowing what your conference will will will hold is valuable right they didn't know that last they do know that this year so even in preparation in the offse they know what to expect week to week and so yeah I I I think there's a lot of value in that in this team uh going out this year I knew you were a pro SL I knew you were going to be a pro about it the final word on BYU Stevenson sylvest don't you dare I KN look I knew you were I knew in the end you were just going to be a team player and be a pro and you're going to be able to break it down I'm a realist okay know you know all have all have his uh his gear package it's in the mail down there good I need more firewood he does love the promise U football we're going to take uh the break here we've got more to go around the corner here it is your cougar preview show uh by the way uh Jake hatchu I host these pre- and postgame shows with and he'll be on the post with us as well after BYU kicks off and and plays this game against SMU tonight you can catch that he just texted and said by the way uh and and I think Riley you had brought it up because you're like what's Darius lasser's uh uh status we'll bring that up in the next break but also injury-wise no major injuries still avoiding the injuries which is good knock on uh well we don't have any here but knock on wood Bo fans the the r will bring the booze all right we're going to take a break before we totally devolve we'll leave that for the rest of the program more to go your life moves fast Quantum fiber internet is faster move up to tomorrow speeds today Quantum fiber.com that's Quantum fiber.com more to go right around the corner 975 the KSL Sports Zone it's a Friday and we're talking football nonstop stop all football all the time this is another edition of football Friday with JJ and Alex presented by G2G bars on 975 the KSL Sports Z yeah this is his defense I mean I anticipate him returning to his role his his role as de coordinator and doing his his part but I don't know if he'll be on the field or if he'll be in the Box I heard the coaches start liking my Posh Life In The Box a little bit too much and maybe he's liking it up there I don't know but like I said after the game it was nice just to hear his voice on the headphones and then and that we can kind of talk back and forth it was a good setup the defense performed well I'm looking forward to getting Jay back with us full time welcome on in everybody it is your football Friday on 975 the KSL sport zone and right now an extension of the cougar pregame show join Hans and Scotty by the way since we're talking about preview shows uh at Tim D Nissan Southtown next Wednesday from 1:00 to 3 for that cougar preview show it's there on uh 111th South is and Jordan Gateway there in uh in South Jordan so think Nissan think Tim Deli Southtown all right so let's chat a little bit more about uh about this this matchup here tonight between SMU and BYU the offensive line so first of all some of the biggest changes that I think the average person doesn't know necessarily and maybe this is something you could speak to Sly which is when a guy like Gary Anderson comes up and helps as an analyst uh son Pua obviously has got his um his hands in this thing as a dline coach at BYU and you've got Jay Hill up there obviously and Kanani this is this is a bunch of guys who know this and they know this system they've been this is the system that they coached in for so long what does the addition of a guy like like Gary Anderson add to a team like he you know it says analyst on the sheet but I mean they brought him in to help out with that dline which is a place on the opposite side of things last year BYU's defense the offensive line couldn't figure it out the defensive line could not get any pressure and we saw that change a little bit in week one well it's the technicians the the technique part you know um on our Sunday night breakdowns I would always talk about like I know this defense I know what play they're doing they're doing this wrong right and guy like Gary Anderson is an extra set of eyes who can help you fix that who's who's been a head coach he's been a coordinator he's been on winning teams he's he's been the championship games he gets that experience that'll let you know like okay we need to practice on this because this is going to be a problem in the future this is going to be something that other teams are going to try to exploit and and guys like Gary Anderson will do it and he and where he's not in that defensive coordinator role where he's having the call plays or being responsible for xrz you just get that experimental eyes that is extremely helpful I hate to say all of these Utah guys names uh attached with by but I mean these guys are awesome right I love Kanani love Jay Hill you know um hope he's doing uh a little better I did text him the other day he text back he's already trying to get back he's psycho can you believe how quickly that like turned around because it went it went from man he's going to be at home he's going to watch the game and then it was like he's up in the booth and then after the game he's in the locker room like all those he had a hard attack he had a completely blocked artery it's it's how that guy works man he's a he's a he's a he's a Chicago Super Fan or something my fifth Arch jez no man but uh but I think Gary Anderson he'll bring that technique that you'll need week to week and what you need to prepare for and what's going to help you in the future man and and so uh one I I just remember this um it was after a game we were actually headed back towards the airport when I was in Pittsburgh and he calls me of course he was watching the game he's like yo I'm I'm I'm moving over to more of an odd front looks a lot like your 3 four like what is the what what what is this how does this work and and so he's really in tune with the details and why things work the way they work it's the same thing like in the league everybody tried to run the fire zone defense of Dick Lao right and nobody did it right because if you do it wrong you will get gashed and Dio's like have them copy me I don't care and he's like they can never duplicate what we do they can try what was the difference then it was it was Define to details of where like like so I I did an internship with EA Sports you know um I think while I was still with Pittsburgh and um and they were trying to figure out things within the Madden game to to have on there I'm like you guys are doing this wrong and at that point it clicked I'm like this is what other teams do they try to see what we're doing on film and they try to duplicate it but they don't know they don't know the rules as to why the nose guard goes this way you didn't tell EA Sports did you I told him they got to make the game go trying to get a job but plus you don't want to misrepresent the Pittsburgh defense come on you guys you said you said the quiet part out loud no um it was um but it's awesome it's the details and that's what coach Anderson will bring to that BYU defense that BYU fans will be able to love about this defense this year uh what jumped off of the page for you from the offensive side of things uh Riley because obviously you know there there are a couple things going on well one if I would if you would have said Hey in week two BYU will actually have their quarterback situation way more figured out than SMU is going to have because they're going to be playing Preston Stone but they're also going to be playing Kevin Jennings and you had uh Rhett Lashley this week the head coach for SMU be like oh yeah no they're both going to see time and and and I think that it was I I think it was the SMU reporter we had on yesterday goes yeah you're likely going to see like a switch off of series too which I'm like yeah he was in tune with it and and both of them and both quarterbacks are totally different and so on the one hand you go okay one brings something totally different but this is the kind of stuff that I think that you didn't want to have a fewer BYU fan never get a rhythm right so when when you have SMU coming in with two quarterbacks Preston Stone and Kevin Jennings then how do you prepare for that uh as a defense I guess knowing both sides of the ball yeah I the the reality is and and I think this early in the season I I think that's okay but you you you tend to go with what you do best I mean it's kind of like what slly was just talking about it's that Institute what's what what's part of our DNA like what's that institutional knowledge like what defenses can we run in our sleep and then you try and dial up and then then you just get a couple variations for whoever's in there and the reality is these two quarterback things rarely Li they start to kind of unravel having been part of one and the which started unravel in week two right like in my my two quarterback thing we beat beat Washington which was a game we were Underdog in Jake Locker Washington they weren't like a juggernaut but they were uh that was Jan jensson to block extra point yes no no later this was 2010 yeah so that was like Jake this was Jake senior that was that was up in that was there oh yeah it was down here and then when I say start unravel like week two we go into Air Force and uh halfway through the second quarter and I says because Jake like threw a pick and he was like one for seven he's like sit down and like Riley you got it and we end up losing that game because we gave up a BYU record 570 yards rushing and we only managed 21 points on offense and then by game three we were done and I I had an injury and the the rest is history so this is this is game three to where like this two court for SMU now granted last week wasn't enough of of a test to really unravel the two quarterback thing but we're getting into week three where like as your BYU you should be licking your chops because this two quarterback thing is going to start to unravel around now in this point in the season so as a defense you should be just waiting for that they're going to create opportunities for you you have to be disciplined enough that's why I say you stay in your base stuff you don't be doing something creative where you have a high chance of you being out of position you want to stay in your position because they're going to give it to you it's just a matter of when and so this should be a great opportunity for Jay Hill and the boys to make a statement on defense uh speaking of Jay Hill uh Mitch Harper just put it up there it's official everyone was assuming this was probably going to be the case but uh yeah Jay Hill is in Dallas and he is going to be calling the defense I don't know if they said whether or not he was going to be in the booth or not but he's going to be calling the defenses and uh he'll be in the Press Box there you go think against all right so uh wow and he put a message out there uh he put a message out there earlier this week that things were going well and and uh loved all the support from cougar nation and and all you know it it was one of those things that all three programs in the state like too many people know J Hill and know who he is and and they know everybody cares about him and and he's got so many dang friends I don't know a lot of people who don't like Jay Hill and so we probably all got his number on our phones right yeah there's at some point he and by the way you're you're also the second or third person we he goes oh by the way he'll text you right back like I'm like what are you doing I was expecting you to ignore this that Sarah text me at least geez it was uh it was a wild week for BYU obviously with uh with so much that changed but obviously you can't take a lot away from a week one FCS game but if you can you obviously saw a lot more output on offense than you uh had anticipated well certainly that you saw last year but I think that there was a sigh of relief at least a little bit two sacks on Pace for 24 sacks that would be a vast improvement over last season's you know 12 game total of 11 well we we said the same thing and and it was just like well and it wasn't just that it was how much pressure they were putting on it too and it was and it was keeping things a really unbalanced for him and and it was just guys were making they were behind the stick so much that game there were a lot of tfls I think they were seven seven and a half something like that and it was uh it was it was a good game for the defense but SM is going to land like s SIU Southern illin didn't land any punches last week SMU is going to land punches how do you respond the old Mike Tyson quote that's way too often quoted right I'm not even gonna say it because everybody knows too often I think that's a real statement I'd say that as an affirmation in the morning everybody gots a plan till you get hit in the face until he get punched in the face get punched in the face Well here here's a guy that's going to punch BW in the face tonight it's RJ Maryland oh go Russell Marland talking about him yesterday when I say Nevada lost the the game the decision to put him oneon-one like come on what are do killing you all game yeah I love how dis I love how distressed that makes Riley about this what were you doing a week Zero game so I think in Reno Ino on CBS Sports me and only like that's why I say that's week zero that's some week zero stuff right there where we were just like so freaking desperate for football all right let's take a quick break we'll come back we've got tons more to break down before we get you into that BYU game that starts at 5 o' uh and we'll of course be continuing on with our uh coverage of football Friday and jump into a lot of Utah for next hour as well so stay with us it's the cougar pregame show right here 975sl Sport Zone hello it's a Friday and we're talking football nonstop stop all football all the time guys this is another edition of football Friday with JJ and Alex presented by G2G bars on 975 the KSL Sports Z he's got a brilliant mind when it comes to football this guy knows how the game works he's got a great relationship with Gus Ma on and and so like you see where his coaching treat comes from and what he's done as a player and what he's done as a coach and a play caller so I'm a football junkie so I like guys that are really good coaches and I study him but more than anything is I admire what he does and then then I meet him in person and I I see like man this is a really good dude and and you know we just have to compete against each other this week but man he is a great human being great family and I think he's doing a great job leading that SMU team oh gosh dang it right when we go live of course Riley Riley Nelson's on X everybody uh yeah the AI images that were conjured up after last night's uh amazing Patrick Mahomes uh start to the NFL I'm telling you the amount of the amount of like all the people who came out of the woodwork and gave you all of the the conspiracy theories on what's going on uh I mean look it's a tough those were two really good teams that's why I love the NFL like that was a fun game it was fun to watch ending was awesome yeah well I was glad I was glad that that uh I was glad that the Ravens made something out of it because it was it was one that I was wanting to see obviously you know that it that it got close hey this is a good place this is a good time to start to fire up the uh he was waiting for you to talk all during break peace and quiet but by the way there's a thousand there's a thousand yards of of open grass that need to be trimmed over that way let's do it right next to the let's do it right next to the booth it's fine all right Friday night he wants to have a weekend I know hey look cougar pregame show we're firing up here talking about BYU versus SMU what you think about the Run game uh obviously LJ Martin and hinley rotti basically did a full half split I mean they you saw Hinkley with almost all the work being done it's become a joke at this point now right yeah he keeps looking back to he's like hey are they still talking you can't trim the that's that's the track there's no grass on it uh all right so no but uh obviously BYU in 180 yards of offense uh was one of those was one of those days that they like to see they were glad that they had the the result that they did but are we I can't I can't I don't know why I'm trying to be Pro about this I don't know what's going on uh no but after after it was all said and done Bo's offensive line they felt like they got the push con uh Connor paay this week when we chatted with him our weekly discussion he said hey this is what we know we can do was there a big change in that in that run game uh not just from not just for these two but do you have a a number one an rb1 is it supposed to be LJ Martin uh because they said he wasn't dinged up and he wasn't May because he he got a lot of work but they split the Reps almost equally I think between 16 carries and 16 carries it was pretty much roati in the first half and LJ Martin in the second half and they both ended up basically with the same there's plenty of examples you guys you guys have your own opinions I think there's plenty of examples different college football teams that have been they've had a one-two punch or like a thunder and a lightning or whatever you want to call it you don't want the four back situation up at Utah right but there there's plenty of room for two backs to get enough carries to to be effective and have an impact on the game the key is as long as you flopping quarterbacks exactly exactly because a lot of running backs are going to do the same thing but in a different way right but as long as your offensive line is getting the job done it doesn't really matter who's back there as long as they're productive and they're talented that's the key is that and that's what I think the biggest concern was with BYU was was that offensive line going to clean things up from last year enough under TJ Woods to to be able to do what they need to do offensively especially at the power four level we got that answer against Southern Illinois kind of I think we really are going to get an answer tonight I think uh true RB ones like a Jamal Williams like a Zach Moss yeah like couple are and by out of good stress and by the way it's probably more easily to be accomplished at a G5 level but I mean like a p i just think about Jamal he he showed up he was super young for his grade showed up as a 17-year-old never heard his freshme he never the only time he ever missed a game was like messing with the rules and regulations down you know getting caught up in some of that stuff at BYU he never missed it for injury oh and by the way in the NFL largely in injury free and he's going on I think his ninth year or something so that's a long time for a running back long he's having really not granted he's transitioned from getting he's transitioned from a guy who's got carries to now he's a he's a protection specialist so uh in in kind of a screen guy but regardless he doesn't miss games due to injury and so those are I guess what I'm saying is they're truly once in a generation guys you look at roati you look at LJ Martin raati has dealt with bigger injuries like kept him out for multiple games or even missed seasons and LJ Mar's first season last year as a true freshman he's a true freshman you know dealing with Nixon Cuts I think the jury's still out on whether or not he's a guy who's going to deal perpetually with nickon cuts or is uh or he's his body will develop to be a true bcow running back but uh to so I I like the Run game at least as far as the ball carriers go you can't expect to have a Jamal Williams year in year out it just doesn't happen and you might point to programs like Wisconsin or whatever that you think had that but it really wasn't the backs it was the fact that their offensive line they were able to put an offensive line unit out out there that no matter who was carrying the ball behind was going to stay relatively healthy cuz they just weren't Exposed on their own so I I was pleased with it I do think LJ is probably your more complete back the back that you put in in bigger spots um but I liked what I saw out of hinley and uh run game's fine I I they didn't have to lean on it I I'm interested to see how that run game does when they need to go to it when the passing game they can't find Rhythm they're getting pressed they're getting pressure red slap's rattled and they got to go to that run game to establish some stability rhythm in the offense to see how it performs under those circumstances uh BYU and SMU kicking off here in the next uh 10 minutes or so uh La I did want to ask you about because DJ WIlliams did have 120 yard 121 yards rushing a lot of it a couple of them the bigger ones were on kind of busted up plays or really the coverage was there and he is not a good throwing quarterback and he probably lean on that a little bit more but does that concern you at all when you watch that or or do you look at it and go well you know they I don't think that they were anticipating that they were going to get they that was the thing they pointed out as is is how much they were quote unquote gashed by that team which obviously they only gave up uh 260 yards or something like that on offense yeah I mean you look at some of the best defensive minds and I'll I'll pass it over to slide for this but they are just like take take away their what whatever they're trying to do whatever their favorite thing to do whatever their their top Target is take it away and yeah let them have fun with something else going into that game they they didn't think that QB rum was going to um right I don't think people thought yeah no one was like oh that's what's going to beat us and so they took away what they wanted to do they took away what they planed to do and it happened to emerge that the guy had a nice day on the stat sheet but it didn't hurt you on the scoreboard and so good for him but ultimately you won the war yeah for me um and that's a big part of the experience Factor right in the technique and what you're learning from um the DJ WIlliams plays I feel like it were chunks he has 15 carries for 120 plus yards that's you know north of eight yards a carry and so uh with that you just understand like when that happens in this style of defense that was just somebody not handling their technique properly right and and so with that those are things that could possibly be fixed you know with the right Personnel uh with people just uh making sure they're paying attention to the right thing and with the with this defense it's so hard right because there's there's times where upfront in the front seven you got to sacrifice yourself so somebody else makes the play right the weak side linebacker the strong safety in this defense always eventually makes the play they're normally the people who lead the team in stats at the end of the year but like those guys up front really sacrific themselves so for the good of the team and that's where the plays are being made so once these guys understand that concept understand that you know that this is a team thing and we're not always going to have you know the stats at the end of the day cuz that's what will kill your defens is if I go play outside of the framework of the defense and so those things will be cleaned up I I think in these next couple weeks and hopefully uh this week against Kevin Jennings in his offense um do you remember the old Chappelle Show skit wrap it up oh yeah the uh wrap up it RP it up that this is the this is West Jordan's version of of playing Sly off of the stage at the Oscars are they saying we're done with the BYU turn we're going to turn on some big hair bands and get the slider WRA it up here all right so frustrated BYU versus SMU that's going to kick off right now we're going to continue on with our football Fridays we're going to preview uh a lot next hour Utah of course uh welcoming into town the Baylor Bears and we're going to also Jam a little bit more on Utah State and USC so stay right here more to go Bo kicks off be sure to stay around for the post game as soon as the game wraps uh you're going to you're going to get the post game uh Jake hatch and myself will chop it up on 975 the KSL Sport Zone will'll be back more to go like I said 975 the KSL Sport Zone it's a Friday and we're talking football nonstop all football all the time this is another edition of football Friday with JJ and Alex presented by G2G bars on 975 the KSL Sports Zone all right everybody welcome back it is a football Friday right here 975 ekl Sport Zone if you hear the re in the background it's because West Jordan knows how to jam West Jordan High School is our setting this evening uh West Jordan hosting orm tonight for Game Night Live Jeremiah Jensen and it's a soft J by the way the Jaguar the Jaguar I heard the guy go I the guy the the announcer came on and it sounded like he said go Jazz and I was like jazz and I was like oh no he said Jags he said ja jazz flute yesz FL the West Jordan West yordan it's exactly right good start for BYU by the way hey what's going on did you defense just got a three and0 look at that see that's not that good of a start I thought it was going to be a pick six all right oh they sacked somebody too on the first uh hey I'm getting my wish they listen I know they're always like we C out the media we don't hear that no I've been getting through uh all right so Jack Kelly has his first uh uniform I thought they were going to get my halfa one last week but it was uh it was it was close he uh did his nose get he's he's one of those players that I'm going to love cuz he's going to have the permanent nose the broken no oh yeah yeah I love it uh so yes BYU just kicked off against SMU they've got the ball uh for the first time after a three and out SL will be updating you every few minutes no I know that's what I was saying I I didn't I know you do the B updates in the in the Bear's voice uh and the BYU cougar that guy please oh that's the only way I could get through this see I was going to do it in my in my Texas uh my driver's ed my driver's ed teacher when I was living in Texas like that kind of always like now here's the thing you guys okay we're out here okay all right you got you got the SMU Mustangs all right and that's what team is coming back you I don't these BYU Cougars I don't really know where they're from exactly but I do like uh I do like uh Jim McMahon that was that was my guy back in the day right that's uh he could crush opportunity Ty oh of course the Texans I did like that Todd demer guy we were supposed to get him down that San Marco state but we didn't get him cougars got him I think it was that lava Edwards guy uh ended up offering him lava lava Edwards uh all right let's talk it's our football Friday marching on here this is the kind of stuff will be launching an Impressions podcast we did the ban voice earlier in the show right and then uh and then we did the we did the coach the thing is is I did actually have a Texas driers Ed coach uh because we were in Dallas still 15 and so there are some things I can't shake and a lot of it when I hear those Southern Accents and Southern Accents actually make football coaches iq's in my head go high go higher if he's got a Southern accent oh yeah he's got it like when Nick Sabin would really turn it on cuz he would try to be proper sometimes and then other times he'd be like we got these young Mana out here and I'm like oh he's turning it on he's getting pissed you're talking about authentic dudes but Brian Kelly Tak well and now now politicians are doing that same thing too holy course speak how you speak own it you got to you got to uh you got to it's just like you do you go to a foreign country you try to speak like they do right I mean come on I get older I know it will cease to be Monday and it will become Monday and Tuesday and Wednesday it's just going to happen I born red red and Logan it's going to come through the Utah Creek will slowly turn into cck like it's just going to happen it would turn into cek oh honey we got that Creek behind our house no we don't we got the creek uh our show is brought to you by G2G bars on natural ingredients and no preservatives make the G2G bar perfect for anybody who needs a quick tasty nutritious boost uh let's fire it up here with the cut we'll jump right in here let's get into some Utah uh let's get into some Utah coverage here and what they're going to do against Baylor let's do it it's time for the biggest story of the day this is what made the cut with JJ and Alex a 975 the KSL Sports Zone some weeks the tight ends will be more involved and and more the the core of the plan and some weeks it's wide receivers I think it's matchups the type of defense that we're facing their personnel you know are they playing nickel are they playing 43 so all that stuff goes into play but one thing that's a big positive is we have the luxury of being able to attack different ways and have a lot of weapons for Cam and Coach L we to utilize I'm excited what week two is going to bring for this uh Utah Squad by the way our program this hour brought to you by the folks at trade and wealth trj wealth.com for all your retirement needs so you hear Whit say that and obviously week two uh starts to get into a little bit you know you have to start planning on not just a better athletic situation from the from the guys in a physicality situation that you're going to get um but because there were moments last week I I don't know if it was all of us who had talked about it but when we saw these guys on the field you're like oh my goodness the the size discrepancy by itself between power five and this is why the FCS game needs to go away right where you go these guys they shouldn't be on the same field together uh playing this game and even if there is a paycheck involved so what's the biggest jump when you see that even if it's a Baylor team that's not supposed to be you know finish high up in the in the Big 12 what's the biggest difference between that team and who they faced last week well for me it's it's kind of like the jump from the uh college to the pros right it's it's your inability to make mistakes in certain things like I felt like you play FCS opponent you make a mistake you're like uh you don't really care about it that much but when you get in games like Baylor where your possessions are valuable uh just like the game last year literally came all the way down to the fourth quarter and every possession could make a difference in the football game uh you you you really take you really take that into account and so uh the focus just goes up the level of execution per play um our defensive line play last week wasn't great and so the technique on that and and your level of care from play to play I think just heightens with the with the opponent you know increasing I think that's a you know I I I think wit loves a blowout shut out that he can still go yeah but we had some things like you said you pointed out the offensive line did not play great you know and you the reality is is there questions at running back there are all sorts of things that you look at and you can you can nitpick I think that's probably a coach's dream right well there's always uh and Whit has done a Whit does a good job he's never I feel like some of Sabin stuff was performative like I feel like that guy was calculated but I do but I do love that clip and it's from probably seven eight years ago now but of him and Kirby Smart they're up 40 in a fourth quarter on someone and just railing on a safety and a cornerback who messed up a a second half assignment and a 40 like backup like these are second stringers and they are just letting them have it on the sideline after a series in a game that they're going to that they win comfortably by 40 but that's a little bit of an extreme example but there's no doubt that coaches love to get a comfortable win but with plenty of stuff on film that become coaching points keep those boys hungry keep the meeting room active keep everybody engaged keep them especially early in the season uh if you if you were to kind of look and say all right you know we go off of what we think we know about uh you know about uh Baylor and about what we know about uh Utah and and you go okay but a lot of it is when it's this early in the season it's based off of what happened last year or or just program DNA like what are they known for right and probably more so that for Utah and obviously for us because we cover it so much but you know with Baylor that's a team that is that is consistently able to get a lot of really good talent out of the state of Texas and that's something you can't really discount even if the program like Dave Aranda is a tough guy like I think culturally they probably had to go through some stuff they fire coach Grimes who of course Kansas picks right up immediately which I always think is kind of funny was just like you were not good enough at a really bad team at Baylor let's get you to Kansas where he was supposed to be one of the contenders in the league where we have a potential Heisman Trophy candidate of course and so so those are the things to me that I look at and I go there's a lot that changes year to year and a team like Baylor can be scary especially the Big 12 because you don't know what you're going to get yeah well first of all you've played in Texas or you grew up in Texas you know there is a lot of Texas football so three star guys in in in in Texas would be four five star guys in other states and from that part so there's just a big pull of talent to choose from and so some guys who don't get the Texas look that don't get you know um Texas A&M look they are they do want to stay home and go to SMU so there's just a big pool of talent to choose from and if you get the right people involved as you guys are saying coaching staff to be able to coach these guys and bring some team together they could be dangerous at any point uh JJ we've talked about this a ton this week and and now that we have a week two that that has hit us and and we've been able to to kind of jam about what Utah and what they do do you think there was a massive there was a sigh of relief the way that cam performed right no doubt like my goodness and that's what we wanted to see we wanted to see if they could come out and you think that wasn't part of the plan to go hey everybody look how excited we are let's throw three touchdowns to bran keithy oh I think they all wanted to make a statement and I think for those two guys I think everybody wanted them to go out there and be successful and and to put on a great show and and to eliminate all doubt and not just for the fans or anybody else watching but for those guys individually uh I can't imagine what it was like for cam rising to go through everything he went through when he wasn't able to play and all the speculation about why he couldn't play and all that stuff like that's not the kind of drama that I think especially someone like cam wants to deal with I don't think any college quarterback wants to deal with that stuff but especially Cam and to be able to go out there game one and show I'm still cam rising in fact I'm not I'm still cam Rising I can go out and I'm going to go use my legs to make a play and I don't I'm not worried about what's going to happen to that he needed to go out there and play with that kind of confidence Riley to make a statement to everybody I'm back I'm cam Rising I'm ready to go and and we're going to go accomplish our goals yeah I I mean he's not his game was always like like if he were a golfer he'd be a Scrambler like he somehow he's never really in the fair way at least that this was my impression of him like never really in the Fairway yet somehow you know tallies up at the end of round he's like oh shot a 75 today or you know or I shot a 70 or something you're like as I watch him from play to play Nothing truly stands out like I guess what I'm saying is especially from an athleticism standpoint right so you're worried is he going to be able to come back from the knee injury is he going to be the same player well he wasn't like a Lamar or like a Kyler Murray that needs to like cut and that's and that's what he relies on in his game he just needed his rehab back to a point where he can do what he does which is lead this offense extend plays when he needs to go and get a third down on a third and six you know when when everything's covered up and go get go keep the sticks moving and things like that so I never was as worried about him uh physically coming back uh it was more just because it it it took so long was he going to be able to step back into that leadership role and the guys still rally around him credit to him in fact I saw one of the one of the preview articles had their cover photo he went out with the c he's gone out with the captains despite being injured he was at that last game in Baylor last year he was he went out and shook hands at the coin toss right so he stayed relevant they've picked him up like he was never gone and I think that's probably a bigger thing I'm not so much worried about his KN although I'm a little worried I do think I I think this would both help his health and his aesthetic what do you guys think about him doing the guardian cap on top of that Spaceball size who was it it was it was our former colleague uh HMA hemuli yeah Don goes look massive headed guys can make fun of massive headed guys can I tell as a massive headed guy and he was like and my kid asked the same thing about Patrick Mahomes last night he goes what's always with his helmet and I was like he sits it up on top he likes that weird kind of funny angle it does make his head look a little bit bigger but massive from 1999 in 2010 because you it made my head look smaller it had smaller cushioning it didn't make my I if I would have put on the helmets of the time I would have looked like a bobblehead but no but cam you look good with the guard he should he should lead out play your safety head injuries guardi the guardian cap in the game I think just the NFL guys I hope they can't they should ban Guardian caps I don't think they actually do anything there's no scientific proof that they actually work yes that's what I'm saying oh but they did show a couple NFL guys are doing it they are going to roll out in the preseason and the college teams are are practicing watch those guys won't play very long just wait I don't know Don was it Don BB who used to wear the big old uh foam thing on top of his helmet I love Don him used to wear that our listeners younger than 35 are like I've tuned out yeah yeah uh there's a lot of there there's a lot going on with a game like this tomorrow does the middle of the game does the middle of the day thing uh like does that affect it it I I don't like that it is the middle of the day Sly but you tell me from a player's perspective I I guess you don't really care when you play the game but at the same time like' be kind of nice to be in the in there's a different atmosphere when the lights are on too rcle St there is there's there's different atmosphere and honestly it matters for your preparation right your routine your day your game day routine is significantly different from an earlier game to a midday game to an evening game and how much time in between like uh it almost sucked in the NFL where we literally had you know Sunday Night Football Monday Night Football we'd be in the hotel all day and we'd have breakfast lunch and pregame meal and it would just be all day versus you know our earlier games all we have is breakfast and we get up and go and and so honestly it depends on the player I like the midday games not too early not too late um things that got rolling in so like starting the light and then end up with the lights on later but this will finish in the day that's those are my favor like my only thing to that is you got to have a good sideline set up like we we got caught a couple times without fans and without misters and without shade if needed like they'll to me the play is not that bad but where you get worn down is when it's your turn to go to the sideline and you sit there and you bake especially on a 130 game because you don't have the shade of the stadium yet so like as long as the sidelines prepped the equipment dudes got you ready to get some relief from the from the Sun on those midday games they're okay I mean uh this is a conference non-conference game whatever but this is the these are the types of teams you're going to be playing in the Big 12 obviously it's a barometer game for sure it definitely is one you can read off of and so what's the real difference do you think like off the top of your head for you guys that you think that uh is the difference between the Pack 12 and the Big 12 like that Utah is going to I don't see it not much I didn't I didn't see it before I don't I don't see it at all it's a little bit a little bit of something something everybody wants to say cuz we got big in our conference that we just play Big Boy football and so you got to get ready for that but I'm just like no no I I assumed the Pack 12 was I like what what was it that the Pack 12 did better than the Big 12 in my mind with how many teams in the top 25 five six yeah yeah know I no I last year was a banner I think for sure I was mostly looking along the lines of like okay maybe there's maybe some more physical trench play but then maybe they're better wide outs and quarterback play obviously in the the well Oregon's had good trench play Washington obviously had good trench play last year Oregon state has been great in the trenches I'd have to say I did talk to Lal this offseason and he was talking about that was an adjustment you know as far as just the frequency of the personnels the frequency of 12 Personnel you're going to see the frequency of 11 personnel that you'll see um and and those are the small adjustments things that you'll have to do but if I remember when I was a player we we we were adjust at tall whether it was nickel whether it was dime whether it was base fourth three uh we were ready for whatever no matter if if a team wanted to play you know 21 12 Personnel um 60% of the game or they wanted to go Kings Personnel 11 personnel you know 70% of the game we were down for whatever so coach Winningham defense is going to be ready for whatever I don't see that there's a big difference as far as size even you know across the the offensive line those Oregon State offensive linemen they were huge right they averaged 320 uh across the board and they a first round draft yeah so I'm just like the difference in size didn't I don't know I think it's just the the name and the title of the conference it's all power four football it's you know there's there's great running backs there's great quarterbacks right it's it's the same deal if you're wondering if Jay Hill is going to make a difference in the a leap in year two on the defense you'll love this stat line BYU's got 51 yards of total offense smu's got negative 18 total yards on their two drafts and yes uh it sounds so counterintuitive or so against my nature as a quarterback but I want BYU to become a Defensive Juggernaut so bad maybe that's and maybe that's because now you should have been a safety no no I was going to say maybe that maybe it's because we had a great defense and I loveed it now we got banged up like you wouldn't believe my senior year which is how we ended up you know with four losses that year but but I but watching that defense watching Danny sson do his thing and K vanoi do his thing and wukang BR ogal tree Patrol in the middle and Ziggy Ana tree he T yeah and and Ziggy anaw emerging uh out of that it was just like I love I love good defensive football man so well you had a you had a coach a coach Who Loved defense by the way speaking of guys who had Specialties you know he was like I remember people used to call Bronco up about when they would Face Georgia Tech because for some reason like that Georgia Tech offense that that uh triple option threat do you want to know what his answer is just reps everybody underestimates the rep we would literally double practice this time against Air Force Georgia Tech or any other uh service Academy our double you got to have a good scout team on off you got have a good scout team in the week too doing those quick handoffs and The Fakes yeah uh all right let's take a break we'll come back hey they turned on the club music for you JJ I they really changed they went from Boston to this Boston was reg Kelly you hear Kelly are you allowed to play R Kelly on a high school campus no you cannot no you cannot somebody got laws against really you've got to take you've got to take the temperature of the community and figure out you can't do that all right we'll take the break we'll come back we got more to go 975 the KSL Sport Zone it's a Friday and we're talking football nonstop all football all the time this is another edition of football Friday with JJ and Alex presented by G2G bars on 975 the KSL Sports Zone all right everybody welcome back it is a football Friday right here 975 ekl Sport Zone Alex cury Jeremiah Jensen and of course uh the signature pieces on a football Friday Riley Nelson and Sly Stevenson Sylvester uh all right so let's chat a little bit let's I want to go back into into some Aggie talk here we've been talking uh Utes cougars and uh now let's get back to a little bit of Aggie talk here before we uh wrap things up with our predictions on how Utah's going to do against Baylor and Utah State's going to do against USC uh I don't know this is a tough one because USC has changed basically everything on their defense Alex Grinch being subtracted from that equation that's a big deal uh you've been able to see this usfc team over the last few years right if you're if you're Caleb Williams you're probably pissed watching this thing from a distance where you're like okay now you get a defensive coordinator who comes in there and breeds some toughness uh USC looked like a totally different team last week is there a shot that they underestimate what the agies are going to bring down to the Coliseum this weekend oh definitely definitely I mean USC is a team that literally rides the media wave and everybody's on them right now they jump 10 spots in the pole so they can definitely Overlook Utah State but one thing they can is that the pig farmer he's coming and you better believe it and I think that he'll be able to uh deliver you know another iconic performance down at the Coliseum that's one thing I loved about Bryson Barnes he wasn't afraid you know he didn't do everything perfect but but he was not afraid and he will stick his face in there and literally blow people up man and so I think that is definitely all that Utah State needs to go down there and pull off an upset uh I don't know what the rest of the offense looks like when they're I mean they're trying to keep it you know to themselves on what the quarterback situation is but just off of gut feeling what would you what would you think that the aies are going to do this weekend yeah I mean I talked about this earlier that like petus he he did a good like he had good pocket footwork and you could tell he's working through his progression but like uh and as the offensive coordinator was kind of trying to find their plays that were working against Robert Morris's defense early on in that game there just wasn't a lot of Separation so he's like trying to throw shoulder throws right like trying to put and just getting balls batted he had picks that you shouldn't be throwing picks against Robert moris I don't care who you are and I'm sorry and like there's bias cuz I obviously played this way but I think a quarterback who's mobile and not just able but also a willing Runner Buys so much margin of error for your offense and that's what Bryson Barnes brings you so uh I I mean obviously petus won the job uh out coming out of camp and he won it for a reason we we didn't really get to see those reasons in the you know quarter and you know quarter and a half that he played against Robert Morris so I don't know what they do but but Bryson Barnes just he's he's got one of those things where like when the dude's in there the the team looks a little bit different y there's a there's a that happened at you uh cam Rising was behind old boy from Baylor and you've forgotten his name already Char Charlie Brewer Charlie Brewer yeah no who's the even even between Bryson and who's the fast kid Nate Johnson Nate Johnson yeah yeah um as I said Bryson just got this thing about him uh and hopefully you know year to year you make developments because all the mistakes he made last year from consistency he could have improved on this year because we did see great things out of Bryson Barnes last year the USC game he started that game off amazing he great that entire game there's been a couple games he did you know we and then you know we go to Oregon and he doesn't play as well or Baylor or Baylor or even Northwestern and too much inconsistency there was too much inconsistency Nate Johnson rescued him that Baylor game wild because then because then Nate gets to start was it the week right after that too then Nate fell apart never got it back never that so here's the thing I think Bryson Bon has the capability of being a great quarterback and and making that happen you know of course we could talk about his accolades from high school down there in Miller uh is it Miller Milford Milford Utah but like uh the guy he he's a baller he can get it done and and going against teams like USC he needs somebody who's not afraid who's confident and will rally the troops and that's Bryson Barnes but one thing USC has in Miller Moss right as he looks like he's 40 years old but he has the closest thing that USC's ever going to get to a pig farmer meaning a dude that has not been showered with Fanfare that is not on the sides of buses and billboards who is a red shirt Junior no entitlement yes redir Jun getting his opportunity for the first time and so he like there to me there's actually more substance normally USC is always all Sizzle no stake I think with Miller Moss I think there's a lot more stake there than there has been in the past don't get me wrong Caleb Williams generational Talent first pick on that but like but for him not to be able to do much like Hardley at all senior year go seven and five then you go yeah there's something there's something there they talk about during the Pete Carrol years that it was really coacho that like he was the recruiting lifeblood and then he kind of kept those dudes like grounded to their roots and didn't it kept them from getting caught up in all this Hollywood stuff and and they had a little bit of that when uh Klay hton took over because he was a little bit workmanlike guy from the south um but but Miller Moss brings a little bit that so where normally I'd say yeah you get USC feeling themselves doing that Miller Moss as the as the emerging leader on that team might be able to keep himed now the other thing could be the the bright lights are very alluring and the Hollywood and the money and the fame and the status and if Miller Mar starts buying into it which you very well could after a Sunday night Prime Time game taking off LSU like like they did he could start believing his own PR by the way he was the one I think it's going to be a little bit more resistant after the game going around to all the LSU fans doing the the L's down and being like byebye like doing all the I was like I was kind of like oh boy we all saw scene for Five Minutes Jamie Fox in Any Given Sunday you know you can come off the bench and you can be actually you know Miller m going to have his own music video coming out right well part of the is part of the issue with the with the game this weekend is it's so early in the season and this and this Utah State team and by the way the thing that keeps getting brought up is people like well he's w at this stadium before and I'm like I hate that comparison I really do that means nothing but I also think but but interim head coach versus the longest tene head coach and on top of it on top of it you think that Spencer petus hasn't played a couple big games before the guy spent 100 years in the Big 10 he's faced off against some pretty big teams so doing the whole like well he knows what big games were like in the col was like look Spencer petus has played in some big freaking games too so I don't know what their Solutions going to end up being I don't know what the long term for this because I do think that there's a there's something to this week and next week like Bryson Barnes might have a little bit more insight as to what these two teams bring because he knows quite a bit about you know both of them although I do think that this I mean because the the UFC defense has changed uh totally from one spot to the next then uh it's a it's a little bit of a wild situation for me that I go I don't think it's not good enough for me to go USC's made it and Utah state is is uh you know is down you know because of because of the stuff happening off he's a little bit more complicated than one guy we haven't mentioned which I'll mention because I think we're heading into a break but Ike Larson has meant as much to the state football program as a defensive player since probably Bobby Wagner you know about 15 you know somewhere around 15 years ago and like I'm very interested to see his leadership of this defense going in facing that challenge cuz I'll tell you one thing USC always seems to have talent at at wide receiver but man some of those against LSU were seemingly Next Level that dude catching reaching back on the back shoulder and then the other thing I can't remember what number it was um but the one dude that caught he he caught like a shallow on the four and he took on three Defenders at the goal line to score like you normally normally USC guys are like oh ratio to the pylon if they get pushed out of bounds oh well um but attitude thing yeah it's the attitude thing but I want to see Ike Larson lead that Utah State Defense which I think has buy and which I think is believing go in there and see if they can you know create some chaos uh as you see this team now kind of going into into week two here and their schedule gets their schedule gets intense uh and people get worried about a slow start against a Robert Morris and fine whatever I you know teams have slow slow starts but I I mean what's the thing that really is going to make the difference of being able to if there's going to be I wouldn't even say an upset cuz I don't I don't worry about upsets but I do wonder if there is going to be one of these two next two games where they can make it competitive with with either of these teams if USC doesn't take Jaylen Royals seriously he can do some damage right you who you always need to depend on your best players in big games either he's going to take so much attention away from the other guys maybe a kyrese white again just like game one they don't know who kyrese white is they know who Jaylen Royals is so they get all your attention but that gives your other teammates opportunities if Utah State can either have Jaylen Royals have an All-American night against USC or Utah or if they totally key on him that the other guys are got to make plays and then all of a sudden you keep them honest maybe you get a big one because they're not paying attention to you all of a sudden you have a different attitude and feel because you guys know you get a little confidence a little momentum the other team gets a little tight all of a sudden things can get Interesting Man you know this is the thing we talked about this this being early in the season you can get new Heroes right this is so early you don't know who's going to come through for you you know it could be R fa fison right this running game could take off things could break down for for SC and crumble we don't know LC yet like if you're planning for one game right and that's what they were doing they were planning for LSU all all off season right you could have a slip up in this back toback week so again you know uh I think Utah State just needs to go in there their head's hell high they literally have nothing to lose you have an opportunity to do something this week in the colum all right let's take another break here we'll come back and uh we'll break down our last bit uh here for Utah vers Baylor we'll get a score update for you for BYU versus SMU and uh we'll give a couple score predictions the BYU game's already under way so you can't give any score predictions okay right it's like the NCAA tournament you can't start calling games I think it's going to be somewhere around two and a half minutes left in the first quarter I think it's going to be seven seven nothing with two can't follow prop beted on who scores first for no you can't no you're not you cannot not allow not allowed all right we'll take a break we'll come back we got more to go on our football Friday here as the weird music selection continues it is it's got its personality of its own here we go we'll go more to go around the corner 975sl [Music] Sports it's a Friday and we're talking football nonstop all football all the time this is another edition of football Friday with JJ and Alex presented by G2G bars on 975 the KSL Sports z h welcome back JJ and Alex 975sl support Zone Riley Nelson incensed because they put up is it the is it the cougar graphic with the like the openmouth Y but they have tan they still have it's not even block what did they call that coug fur yeah it's Cosmo fur T they call it cougar tail frosting that's just what they call it frosting it's not Maple no ESPN's still throwing that in there we haven't seen Tan in 20 years you know what bring it back Kanani's a big guy that's he Kanani is a royal guy but at the same time like he played with the bibs on for a second didn't he oh he sure did his 2000 was his senior year come on get the bibs back out you know one of these years a bunch of hipsters in the athletic department are going to be like no that's impossible they pull it Greg Rebel no uh all right welcome back football Fridays yeah the cougs with a seven nothing lead on the SMU Mustangs although like a defensive battle between these two teams now we we talked about the we talked about the show I mean so BYU's backed up hand the ball off to LJ Martin gets the drive off started with a nice sevenard carry but then jogs off hobbling he got an ankle injury which is that's kind of what plagued him last year is those lower leg sprains and strains so hopefully we'll see him back in the game but he didn't return after after getting kind of rolled up on uh all right let's uh let's let's uh finish some things off here on our football Friday with a couple of predictions here so let's do some score predictions uh and if it's not a score prediction BYU gets the win tonight if what happens don't give me the if they score more points s slide don't give me that I sa that look on your face do it honestly well now that we have the benefit of watching a quarter if they control Jennings like he's been the best offense for SMU and BYU uh they have some spy on him but he's he's elusive enough that it's going to take a little bit more than just Jack Kelly spying yeah so far when Stone was in they have minus n yards on those two drives when Jennings is in they have 72 yards of offense yeah y so I think you're going to see Jennings a lot more tonight against bwu well it certainly is thrown off the defense a little bit like you can prep all you want for it but then when you get in front of the guy and and you have to that's why you do literally the announcers last night talking about that with Lamar Jackson like how do you prep for this right you're going to have a great scout team quarterback it won't make a difference once you get in the actual game you know what Vibes I'm getting from Jennings it's not the same level okay so don't mistake me there but Bo Here Comes dard Robinson okay I'm getting dinard Robinson vibes from him uh like small under size but got pretty good Quicks and acceleration not to that level but having a rough time yeah running the football so far he does TI shoes though yeah it's good good for him dard didn't he did not that was like his that was his move uh all right let's go let's go Utah State USC down at the Coliseum Sly will start with you oh how does this thing go how does this thing uh turn out it's a 28-point line in favor of uh of the of the Trojans I think it'll be a back and forth Affair but I I I think it'll be a lot better game than a lot of people expect um I I got SC by 24228 okay yeah I just think USC has too much with with what we saw based I'm going off of what we saw at LSU with that defense being so much better uh the physicality and just overall athleticism the USC has it's just it's going to be a tough night for the yaggies uh I I think USC rolls easily okay I'm going to do 3514 want me give a score yeah give me a score 4217 okay yeah what did I say for uh 42 no no 35 14 is what I said all right I don't know how they'll get there 46 to 18 I don't know how they get there the old Swami picks you guys like I think you I think you read the exact like over under and you're like I'm gonna and then I'm going to go to the line and then I'm give me exactly what're by the way he was off air I know didn't watch NFL Countdown I was listening to an interview of his on a podcast and I realized that's what he was doing with all the weird scores he was signaling to the betters cuz ESPN didn't endorse betting at that time he was signaling the over under and whether or not they TR to spread that's why you get like a yeah the yes I remember watching those as a kid I was like why are they putting this crazy old man on here who doesn't know don't they know it's Threes And Sevens there are no you you cannot get to 26 you cannot do it I'm old enough to remember Brent musberger and Jimmy the Greek on NFL today yeah and I'm like why are they talk what are they talking about Dad Dad what are they talking about what's the minus Point thing they're talking who's a wise guy what does he mean every Sunday morning they leaned into it yeah oh yeah all right let's go Utah Baylor uh the UTS welcoming their first big 12 opponent into rcle Stadium even if even if it's not a conference game it'll still definitely feel like one uh I I went with Sly first so let's start with you Riley on uh on this on this Utah versus Baylor game tomorrow 30 to 15 I think they uh it's a workmanlike performance take care of business I I uh I don't think things are going to get ugly simply because I just I I don't know I I rarely see a full day game where turf's early in September where turf's going to be triple digits where like a team really runs away with it it really gets ugly okay it does have a little bit of a drain so 305 uh I'm going to go I think the Utes score more points and I think that they keep the offensive thing rolling cam Rising is going to be in the whole game too in my mind so I think it's going to go yeah more of the game so I'm going to go UT's roll on this one it'll be a 41 to 24 oh that's too many points for the yeah what are you doing I'm going to go 41 19 I don't want him to get okay swam 4119 there you go oh man for me I got I I got you rolling in this man I think we might even score more points than we did last week huh uh but I'm going to put the line at at at 45 to7 wow that's a blowout you I just added up you want you think 70 points are going to be scored tomorrow two defensive head coaches and a 130 kick but don't but make me a mistake what did I say I no I said 41 19 oh 19 60 points sorry not yet but either way UT's going to jump out quick tomorrow here's the other thing too by the way uh Baylor has not been great at stopping people sometimes like so so once you get it rolling it opponent scoring points against Dave Randa even though he's a defensive-minded coach that's part of the reason why people are a little disenchanted I think with it right now because he's it's like well give me the thing that you do best well uh I'm a good I'm a good he's like he even said in the in the in the interviews this week he's like I'm trying to balance doing the defensive thing and still trying to be a head coach and and uh and and that's a hard thing for him which is not good to say when you're fighting for your job but yeah either way yeah something's off with that Baylor program right now uh the first game they killed like the joke was they they beat William and Mary and William was out William was out injured so if you if you get what I'm saying was that the fake was that the fake that was a fake AI the coaches such a funny funny joke the Titanic had better routes than their receivers that's terrible uh couldn't cover the Burger King bill with a stolen credit card the corners oh my gosh but anyway so there just something off with this B program it's going in the wrong direction Utah's got it going right now uh I just Baylor doesn't have the dudes right now Baylor didn't have a single player on the preseason All Conference team I know that's not everything but I mean even Cincinnati had on that you know what I me it's weird for them too with the talent they bring in I just don't think they have the talent to match the youths I think I think it's uh I'm going to go I I don't I think Utah's not going to roll like some of you guys think on offense I like rley I think that Baylor does have some defensive ability here they're going to be able to slow him down a little bit but I'm still going to go 24 to3 okay I I don't think Baylor's going to you think we're going to we're going to be a 40-point offense this year Jarry you think we're going to score 24 points all right you know what after if they go out and put 49 or something on Baylor then I'm I'm all in on that I'm all in on that I got I got to see it against offense this year I got a seed against a P4 and at that point then well he scored almost 40 points in one quarter you guys it was we got we got we got to wrap this thing you know why Riley's got to get home watch TFO versus Fritz right versus I have love my second career but don't worry I'm still going to have the Packers Eagles PRI PR and Buu SMU and then I don't know who the my Utah game is and then I'll be listening to Sly and JJ go there you go we got are you you guys commenta on the real junky everybody it's on the stream yeah video yeah yeah we have TV game just online I'll have that on the laptop I'll have the tennis on the iPad and then I'll have BYU and the NFL game on the big TV where's TFO in Fritz though they're going to be in Flushing Meadows what do you mean no but I mean like where's that going to be on your TV that's oh no that's on the iPad okay good all right I didn't want it to take big TV SP no high school on the computer tennis on the iPad NFL BYU on the big screen family way on the back burner that's what I hey I got everybody everybody better have eaten dinner before they start that's true no no you guys should come over I game uh here at West Jordan High School between West Jordan the Jags got some of the best uniforms and color schemes School football here you know they got a boost because they have the Utah Hockey Club color thing going on or rather the Utah Hockey Club stole their colors from West Jordan High School obviously so was it Mountain blue what what are we call them ice White Ice White Rock Black Rock black and then it's not powder sky blue sky blue yes I think it's sky blue something whatever they they look like the Utah Hockey Club out there that's exactly right they look sharp official High School of the Utah Hockey Club by the way yeah there you go uh playing Orum obviously the Tigers coming to town that'll be a tough one that'll be a nice nice game for you guys on a Friday Night Lights uh okay very quickly here let's do just a touch of NFL before I get out uh the game last night against the between the Chiefs and the Ravens did it change any of your thoughts as to why I think I may have shorted the Ravens a little bit that was that's a good team oh yeah you forget how good of a coach that John harbi is I mean we don't really for you might see that matchup one more time when it really matters so that's what I was asking you do did you feel like after game one that the Chiefs are the preeminent like they're they're the they're the they're the pre- champions of this one still uh did you did you think to yourself oh no I don't think they're as good they're they're getable what did you think about that one after game one no I feel better about the Chiefs now than I did earlier because you were able to see um how they can use Xavier worthy and they used him really well uh Rashid rice is even better uh I I think that they they they move some they moved on from some guys in the receiver core that weren't very good and they replaced them with the guys that were better so offensively they're not skipping a beat defensively they were really good Lamar Jackson is so extremely difficult to defend he does things as an NFL quarterback that very few do and he was doing it again last night and you know what that game count came down to one play and half an inch and it was such a spectacular football game it was everything you'd want in an NFL football game my mind is not changed on the Chiefs but it shows you that a team like the Ravens maybe it's the Texans there's some other teams that are coming there's some other teams in the AFC that are sick and tired of watching the Chiefs at the top and they want to take them down and the Chiefs are going to get everyone's best shot and the Ravens on the road proved a lot last night that does it for us that's it another uh football Fridays in the books uh for our producer Jeremy hitting the buttons back in Salt Lake brand making sure we're on the air the entire time here in West Jordan for JJ and Riley and Sly I'm Alex we'll talk to you next week everybody 975 ekl Sports Zone
