Iowa Hawkeyes secure 40-0 win over Illinois State in season opener

College football season, officially underway Iowa play in their first game without Kirk Fence since 1998. But the one thing everyone wants to see is how the Hawks new look offense plays under Tim Lester, a packed house welcomes in the 25th ranked Hawkeyes as they host Illinois State and the defense, we pick up where they left off last year, Jamari Harris steps in front of this Illinois State pass the first takeaway of the season for the Hawkeyes, but the offense would not be able to cash in later in the first Iowa op opportunistic. The Redbirds put the ball on the turf TJ Hall there to pounce on it. Hawks with two half take with two takeaways and a half only scoring six points and a half third corner. The Iowa offense comes to life quickly. Cade mcnamara rolls out and finds freshman Reese Vander Z for the seven yard strike first TD of his career. It's 12. Nothing after a quick stop on De Hawks will back to the air. Jacob Gill for the 31 yard TD toss Iowa with a 19 point lead first play of the fourth quarter and it would be mcnamara still firing away as he lofts it up to the freshman again, Vander Z with his second of the game, it's now a 26 nothing lead and Iowa would then eventually get their ground game going as Caleb Johnson will take the hand off and he finds a huge hole racing 64 yards to the house. He would score twice in the game. Iowa cruises to a 40 point win. Jenna Minor was at the game and has more on this big Hawkeyes win. That new look Iowa offense looked more of the same early on at Kinnock stadium. The Hawkeyes can only muster 100 and 47 yards and six points in the first half. But boy did things change after halftime, the Hawks explode for 35 points in the second half with Kate mcnamara and Caleb Johnson leading the way Iowa piles up nearly 500 total yards and 40 points the most points scored since October 1st 20. I'm not gonna lie like we all came together as a team, bro. So I just like with him over there defense, you know, just us having to maintain throughout the week, you know, staying focused, doing the little things right. So us as a team, the O line, Kay had a great day, Oline, had a great day. Everybody have a great day. So now we're just looking forward on to Iowa State and fixing, fixing the little things and you know, coming together more as a team and, you know, battling up obviously the, the first half, um, you know, we wasn't our best but, uh, you know, i it's new, I, we're, we're trying to get better as we go and, you know, we showed that coming out of the second half and really a credit to, uh, you know, the coaches and making us stay together. I think we really started to gain some momentum at the end of that second quarter. When we were able to go on a decent drive, we weren't able to, you know, finish with a touchdown. But I think overall, like when stuff wasn't going our way at the beginning, we were kind of, you know, really our tempo wasn't very good and I think once we were able to gain some momentum and gain some tempo, um, that really set us up really good for the second half, even though the, the two, the two halves are noticeably different. Um, I think what you find there is is you find examples of complementary football in both halves and, um, the fact that, you know, that we were able to overcome, you know, some momentum changing penalties, um, some plays that were taken away from us, uh, and yet still stay the course, you know, offensively and defensively and I know offensively it was, you know, it was a little bit of a struggle to get things going in the first half but the fact that we were going out there defensive and trying to complement that with three and outs and giving them the opportunity. If you're wondering about the Iowa defense. Well, they're still really good. The Hawkeyes forced three turnovers and pitched another shutout.
