hey what's up folks welcome to another edition of football Theory I'm lifetime Longhorn Rod B joined by of course the coach former High School football coach at Berard Capel Brownwood Belton Rotan also played college football at abene Christian coached there in multiple stance also was on the staff at the University of Texas for multiple head coaches it is the coach Bob Shipley what's going on Coach how you doing hey what's up Rod man just Jo I don't I don't know how you're doing in uh in Austin but we got a little break in the weather here in abene it's yeah not not quite as hot as it's been yeah I hear game day actually the the at least now the expected temperatures are the high is around 9192 for the fans so they'll get some relief I think that's probably a little bit unfortunate because that also means Colorado State's gonna get a little bit of relief too it won't be as hot that will be an advantage for Texas but that's we'll get into of course in football Theory we'll talk about the match up between Texas and Colorado State a little bit I got to pick coach's uh brain about I want to talk about the def I I think the the matchup of the uh Texas offense versus the Colorado State Defense is less compelling I don't know if there's many uh compelling matchups and uh impactful players on both sides there so I want to talk about their offense Colorado State's offense first of the Texas defense I think that's their identity um that's what they're known for if you want to talk about some Elite aspects of a team their Elite player Elite aspects on the offensive side of the ball that's what they're going to try to do damage so we'll talk about that versus uh te that Texas defense but before we get into the matchup between Texas and Colorado State let's thank our fantastic sponsor as always we are very grateful to Laura Baker uh Laura Baker is uh sponsoring football Theory uh so it's brought to you by her and the Austin uh Team there at Keller Williams we appreciate her Laura Baker and the Andy Allen team at Kell Williams they can handle all of your real estate needs in the Austin area Laura is not only a DieHard Longhorn fan but a longtime Austin real estate expert so please give her a shout today uh at 512 78455 that's 512 78455 all right uh coach let's dive right into it because first of all this is going to be a really good test for the Texas secondary because Colorado State's gonna throw the football they gonna throw it 40 to 45 times and they are one of the kind of the old school not maybe they kind of running some of the old school original air raid principles because they are an air raish offense so the conundrum I think is we know they GNA throw the football a lot Texas has an upgraded pass rush on the outside with all the great Edge Defenders they brought in how do you get to Braden Fowler Nicolosi because the ball's coming out really quickly and not only that the the Air Raid Offense by Nature right insulates itself with the pass protection because of the timing of the throws and the quick short throws which they ALS Al that's a big part of their offense they also use a lot of that and if you're Texas coming on the edge coach how do you solve the problem when the ball's coming out quicker than your Edge rushers can collapse the pocket I think that's that's what Texas is gonna have to do by the way Colorado state only allowed 14 sacks last year that was one of the top 15 best uh pass protection units in the country so they they know what they're doing Braden fou niosi does a great job maneuvering in the pocket bying time how do you solve this problem coach that's what I think we should discuss a little bit Yeah well it's it it is a problem because um you know first down in 10 um it's it's a it's a totally different mentality for an edge guy as it is third and medium or third and long you know you you can pin your ears back and come in in an obvious passing situation but uh it's it's those times where they're going to miss mix it up and uh throw high percentage passes quick passing game there there's not a lot you know really that you can do they've got a couple of guys up front that that uh Jacob Gardner the the center yeah it's good player and uh and Drew Moss the guard they're they're going to be tough up the middle um it's going to be tough to get penetration straight up the middle uh well I think we'll have to do with our Edge rushers but but even at that you've got to get your hands up because it's it's a it's a quick release the ball's coming out fast they're not going to let you hardly get get pressure on them but uh have having said that it's frustrating sometimes because your pressure has to be relentless you it has you have to keep coming you're not getting there in time blah blah blah and then uh of course you bring some you bring some heat off the edge and it and it will get his attention real quick uh maybe in the throwing lanes and and get him get his eyes off of his receivers a little bit but uh you know I look for us to be pretty pretty base we talked about this uh in uh the the winning Drive earlier this week we talked about offensively and defensively us being as base vanilla as we need to uh so this is just going to come down to just Smashmouth not Smashmouth but just base stuff me on you uh us trying to to slow down their their passing game a little bit but uh I I don't think it's one of those you almost have to and I'm not patient so it's hard for me to do this defensively you have to wait for them to make a mistake you know yeah and I I'm not very patient in doing that and uh so it's a good thing I'm not calling the defense on Saturday because I want to make something happen right now you know no I would no coach it's interesting because I you know Texas to your point you know I do think the interior of the offensive line for uh Colorado State that's their strength you brought up Jacob Gardner who's really good 45 starts Drew Moss 34 starts even Alex Foster left guard he's got 17 starts under his belt so even if you got like you said get frustrated and you want to say you want to Bitz the interior you get you're getting tired of them dinking and dunk like no man I'm coming up the gut we're going to collapse this pocket and blow we gonna blow it up and come from the interior that's where they have the most experience um so they're probably better suited to deal with interior pressure than they are from pressure on the edge but the system Keeps The Edge pressure from getting home because the ball's out so quickly and what I this is what I would I would I think I would do coach and they did this last season when they played uh Texas Tech late in the season and Oklahoma State and they did a little bit more versus Washington and there's a you know there's I think a a downside to this they played more bump and run coverage on the field and the boundary side then I remember them playing all season long now maybe it's because they like the wide receiver matchups maybe it's because they felt like their DBS had gained enough experience and they were fundamentally sound enough at that point in season that they could do it and they shut down Texas teex passing game I mean shut it down uh they couldn't any quick game any inside breaking routs to Texas usually had been susceptible to they stopped all that and Texas Tech really didn't have they suffocated the passing game they really didn't have any air uh to juice the passing game but when they Texas did that versus Oklahoma State they still blew out Oklahoma State but Oklahoma State's counter was all right if you're gonna play aggressive bump and run coverage against us we're gonna throw it deep over the top because that's going to be some room there and they had some success I think they were three or seven throwing the ball deep uh 20 yards or more down the field and we also did it against Washington a little bit more to take away the inside breaking routs to quick game which by the way against even against Oklahoma State they took those elements away from the offense and they took a lot of that away from Washington Washington schemed some things open but Washington was was taking shots downfield 15 to 20 yards and they had success that was the best deep ball passing team in the country and they were six of eight passing the ball deep so I I think Texas should play more press and take away the quick game because that's what Tory Horton lives on he has 575 yards on throws of 10 yards or or fewer Nicolosi over 50% 51% of his passing attempts were you goonna look at between zero to nine yards that's their sweet spot that's what they wanna that's where they want to get that's where they get in that Groove you take that away and you really could force him to hold on to the ball half a second longer and the stats say yes he has a 2.6 average time to throw but that is overall when he's throwing to the zero to n yards when he's throwing to that range 2.3 seconds goes on to the ball a little bit longer when he's got to get the football downfield from 10 to 19 yards he's at 3.2 seconds from 10 to 19 yards now more than 20 yards downfield is just three seconds so take away the quick game take away the zero to n yard throw force him to go a little bit deeper into the progression little bit more downfield his average time to throw jumps up from 2.3 seconds from zero to nine yards to two to sorry to 3.2 seconds so that's a that's almost a second difference then your pass rush will get home so I would take away the easy stuff coach now you make yourself vulnerable to the Deep ball put a safety over the top of Tory Horton and tell the other guys they need to go out there and man up yeah well Tory Horton is as good a receiver as we'll probably see this year um he'll be one of the top three receivers that we'll see this year would would you would you say that's probably accur yeah right coach so um you know and again we talked about this a little bit on Monday's um winning Drive show the fact that um you know they've got to be smart they've got to be smart uh with with how they attack our defense because they don't want to go three and out you know and and not let much time uh go off the clock I I look for them to mix it up you know a lot but um it's going to be it's going to be a good test for us having a having a receiver of that caliber out there and again I I think I think you'll see probably uh Manny you think Manny will probably take him on and uh like that and then we'll just see what happens and then if we need help over the top then we can get some help over the top but I don't I don't think we're gonna we're not going to go out there trying to shut him down from the very first play I can't imagine us giving him that much attention although he may prove to us that he deserves that much attention and hopefully we'll do what we have to do as the game progresses yeah they had I mean if you have to I I think early on I would allow my DBS to challenge him and come down and take away not ex said you don't have to roll coverage or have to double them you could if you want to I don't know if they have many other proven Commodities as weapons so I'm not against you know just taking him out of the game but the damage that he does is between zero to 19 yards after that he's not much of a deep threat even though he can run he's got an average top speed of nearly 22 miles hour he can run but they're not a very good deep ball passing team coach they were 21 of 72 uh converting deep balls last year uh they were 105th in deep ball passing grade by Pro Football Focus uh even Tory Horton their best receiver five of 27 converting deep balls 20 yards or more down the field so if now they may come in here try to break tendency which they could do coach um and that's a good way to break Tennesseee but if I'm if I'm defending what they do well I would have to say that I want to take away the short intermediate stuff H because I think that's where they want to make most of their where most of their production is uh for Texas so we'll see if they play more pressed they did toward the end of last year coach and that was obviously Ryan watts is in the NFL now um and so you got a different secondary all together no jiren Thompson uh Katon Crawford's different Terence Brooks uh obviously gone to um but I would I would allow those DB and maybe with Jay Baron a guy you can move around maybe it's possible that if they move him around because they don't move him around a lot he's out wide coach about 70% of the time he's out wide and usually to the right side of the formation we'll see if that holds that's kind of where he's been but since he's been at Colorado State they've been moving him in the slot a little bit more I bet they have him in the slot half the time versus Texas I bet that half the time to try to find them a favor match and all and not allowing you to bump and run him and put your hands on yeah y I think that's probably probably a pretty good idea and uh just just work ease into it as the game goes on ease in you know you've got your hopefully your your shut him down coverage uh if you need it bracket them yeah yep but we just I'm sure that got okay well if he's if he's giv us troubles with this and we'll change to this and they'll have a progression I'm sure to you know to to shut him down but U it it doesn't take long for a no-name guy to come in and have a big game when when you are so focused on stopping one guy and with the portal and uh everything you know guys kind of slip under the radar sometimes and they may they may have a guy that that comes out if they can find um somebody opposite of him to take some pressure off of them it would surely uh you know help their offense I'm sure they're hoping they'll have somebody that'll come through one other thing about them putting him in the slot um they don't do it a lot but keep this in mind this is a stat from Pro Football Focus yards per route run the record for yards per route run in the slot coaches 4.96 Devonte Smith Heisman winning season of course Sark the architect of the offense one of the greatest wide receiver Seasons we've ever seen won the Heisman that's the record 4.96 yards per route run if you look at yards per route run for uh Tory Horton Now versus man he's around 2.74 yards per route run versus Man coverage and he's about uh 2.8 versus zone so he's around close 2.8 2.7 versus man in zone when they put him in the slot his yards per route run is 4.18 so the alltime record is 4.96 when they put him in the slot for just being a slot receiver the record is 4.96 by Devonte Smith when they put toy Horton in the slot he's at 4.18 and usually he's Hing around 2.7 2.8 he's a much more lethal prolific receiver in the slot than he is on the outside I think they put him in the slot a ton I think that's the way they break tendency coach he's got he's got 21 Force Miss tackles on the season 10 of them are from the slot and he's only in the slot 28% of the time less than 30 of the time he's deadly there they're going to put him in there and that's if he they put him in the slot I wonder if you put J Jay Baron in the slot to try to you know neutralize them and maybe that's the way they start moving Jay Baron around a little bit to try to counter some of the things they gonna do I can't wait to see how creative they get with it coach yeah I'm I'm sure we'll see him shifting and motioning and uh you know bumping in um bumping out um not letting us try to you know get a hand on him when the ball snapped uh so have him have him have him out of motion or out of a a set where he's jumping to another formation and when they snap the ball and um that'd be that'd be a smart way to do it I think um and just hang on to the ball as long as you can and just nickel and dime us and uh hope that we get impatient yep uh and T is going to be big man if they do actually complete some of those underneath passes being able tackle in Space the players have emphasized that I they live off the slant Slants and in-breaking routes are kind of their money Concepts in the passing game we talked about the short zero to nine yards keep in mind last year Texas versus inside breaking routes power five starting quarterbacks over 20% explosive play rate over nine yards per attempt allowed over 61% completion percentage inside breaking routes if they don't emphasize leverage coach it could come back back to haunt in this game inside Leverage is going to be really really important um all right good stuff there coach before we get out here let's thank our wonderful sponsor uh Laura Baker and the Andy Allen team at
