e e [Music] [Laughter] [Music] [Music] [Music] hello my coo thank you so much for joining us here on this is now we begin with some First Alert severe weather coverage a tropical storm watch is in effect for Havi County as we are keeping a very close eye on what is now tropical storm H Jo joining me here in the h&n digital Center is our first alert meteorologist Drew Davis to tell us a little bit more about what we can expect Drew thanks for having me and Dylan we've been tracking tropical storm hon since before it was even a tropical storm or tropical depression and we are now seeing it going to be moving south of the Big Island as we go forward into this upcoming Saturday evening into Sunday I want to show you what it looks like on the First Alert radar and satellite as well we're going to zoom in out from the island chain over to two active storms out there there's tropical storm hon and just a little bit further east there's hurricane Gilma which was a category 3 hurricane now a category 2 tropical storm H is what we're watching as we're going forward into this weekend however giving you a little bit closer look on our first alert radar and satellite you can still see it's very organized it's getting it's got its act together compared to what we've been seeing the past couple of days and we're expecting this to move South of the Big Island impacts will be felt on the southern Southeastern and Eastern parts of the Big Island as we're going forward into this upcoming weekend we're going to be taking a look at the official track from the Central Pacific Hurricane Center I want to show you what we could see as we're going forward into Sunday this is the track it's expected to stay at Tropical Storm strength through Saturday and Sunday this is Saturday at 6 p.m you can see the time stamp right up there just above above the island chain and then it's expected to move further West Northwest south of the rest of the island chain we could see some impacts across the rest of the neighbor islands and here on the Gathering Place as well the system is expected to actually get to category 1 hurricane strength that's the latest forecast from the Central Pacific Hurricane Center and then quickly downgrade again to a tropical storm as it continues off moving off to the West Northwest again we could see some impacts and rainfall here on the rest of the islands the Big Island will see the brunt of these impacts let's take a look at the wind speeds going forward here is what I'm showing you is the path again and then these yellow and orange colors is tropical storm force winds and hurricane force winds forecasted the Southern and Southeastern portions of the big island so South Point CAU could be seeing tropical storm force winds Saturday night into due Sunday morning and throughout Sunday afternoon as well and then again it's going to continue moving off to the West Northwest we could see some rainfall for the rest of the island chain but it's not going to be as strong as what the big island is expected to impact see this weekend First Alert weather days are in place for Saturday Sunday and Monday and a flood watch is up for the big island alongside a tropical storm watch as well this does not include the rest of the state as of now let's take a look at some of the potential impacts especially for the big island maximum wind gust could be around 50 mph and the flood watch again is up for the big island so flooding is possible and surf is going to be moderate to maybe even High Surf advisory criteria on south and east facing shores as we're going forward throughout the weekend rain totals between 2 to 7 in expected on the big island mostly for the South and Eastern parts of the Big Island models again are showing more confidence that it is taking this system south of the rest of the island chain but we're still on high alert in case there is a switch up in the path moving it closer to the rest of us bringing heavy rainfall and more impacts our way let's take a look at our first alert future cast right here you can see we are going to be going really slowly through time Saturday at 2 a.m. you see that time stamp we're starting to see the impacts along the Hamakua Coast over near Hilo as well going further in time the system moves close close to us Saturday night this is around 11:00 a.m. or or Saturday morning around 11:00 a.m. you're starting to see Heavy Rain near Hilo the Southeastern parts of the big island and it continues moving south and is the strongest during Saturday evening into early Sunday morning bringing Heavy Rain towards South Point and the C areas and strong winds again the further south you go is when you're going to be seeing the strongest winds and the most rainfall again that system is going to continue moving off to the West Northwest our surfing Shoreline forecast right here we are tracking High Surf on south and east facing shores as we're going forward throughout the weekend and here's your first alert 7-day forecast again First Alert weather days are in effect for Sunday and Monday for this storm we're going to be tracking it around the clock make sure to download the Hawaii news now First Alert weather app to get the latest information Drew thank you so much for that I want to ask you what is the likelihood of the impacts that this will bring stronger winds across the state um as we saw with the Lina wildfires those winds were a result of a hurricane that was passing south of our Islands could something like that happen again something like that could happen luckily this system is a lot weaker than what we were seeing with hurricane Duro which caused the strong winds that led to the the Maui wildfires last year one of the things that we are expecting is strong winds across the rest of the island chain we could see wind gusts up to 20 to 30 mph in some spots especially down slope of Melco regions and over Leeward areas that may not see as much rainfall as Windward and Mela areas it could remain dry and we could see strong winds and of course that leads to high fire danger that is a concern we're tracking it very very closely going forward thank you so much Drew and this is a good reminder that you should get your hurricane kits ready uh you should have upwards of two weeks of food supply and water uh ready to go because emergencies can happen at any time not just during Hurricane Season uh but we want you to definitely go ahead and get your hurricane kits ready if you need need some reminders of what should be in those hurricane kits food water medical papers as well that's always important to have and you can stop by any hardware store to go ahead and start uh making your building your hurricane kits and making sure they are up to date we also want to turn now to Havi County as they have partially initiated their emergency Operation Center in advance of any potential impacts here's the latest from them mayor Mitch Roth says state and federal agencies The Dot and Hawaiian Electric began meeting earlier this week as parts of Hilo may get the brunt of the storm looks like they'll probably get the most of the rain and possibly the the wind although you know we could see stuff down at South Point and CAU as well so um our teams are all preparing their their battle rhythms mayor Roth urges residents to get their hurricane preparedness kits ready and to check the Havi County Civil Defense websites for the latest alerts and as a reminder this is a good time to prepare your hurricane kits and severe weather emergency packs two weeks worth of emergency supplies including food water medicine and personal documents should be inside your kits GO bags should be ready not just for hurricane season but year round as Havi is prone to many natural disasters from the random threat of tsunamis to wildfires and more well vice president kamla Harris has officially accepted the Democratic Donald Trump I've made the heart-wrenching decision to suspend my campaign and to support president Trump while campaigning out west Trump says he welcomes the endorsement we just had a very nice uh occasional star performer and regular events like hoola shows kala Papa was home for more than 8,000 people since it was established as a Hansen's Disease colony in the 1860s many chose to stay after a cure ended quarantine in the [Music] 1940s it is now a more quiet place only a handful of patients still reside on the remote peninsula of Moka all kpuna the oldest now 100 years old nature is the noisiest here the peacefulness occasionally broken by the sound of state or NPS work trucks passing by and twice a day the puttering of the mulele flight landing and taking off kala Papa remains isolated special permission is needed for entry visitors still have to have a permit and must be sponsored by a resident or have pre-arranged reservations through the National Park Service kalal Papa became a national park in 1980 there was skepticism about the federal agency managing such a sacred Hawaiian settlement but that eased quickly NPS workers are part of the community a lot of our staff are actually descendants or relatives of former patients um and so that connection they they hold the stories they know what's important because those Traditions have been handed down that's why NPS partnered with Winward Community College to provide the additional training for the staff this so beautiful learn to preserve the lineage of some of these trees that the patients brought so while the tree itself might die a cakey from it or a cutting from it can live on in perpetuity adding to what's often called the cultural landscape of Kala Papa I'm Lin kanano Hawaii news [Music] now in news
