Sean Payton & Will Lutz on the TRUTH Behind the New NFL Kickoff Rules

this team opened last year with the onside kick that almost worked so given the emphasis on teams around here and how creative you the coaches and you guys are is it something where there may be some judicious risks to take for this team going forward well I think it's situational um you know end of half end of game obviously you have to do other things if you're trying to spark something with a kickoff you're going to have to get a little testy with the landing Zone and stuff like that to get the reward of the ball only coming out to the 25 or you know pinning him inside the 20 um so I I think it's so situational that I can't really answer that you know spot on but yeah I do think at some point that's the best thing about the kicking game is you can change the momentum yeah and so I think that's a role that we have to kind of adapt as a as a kicking game but it's kind of like the new surprise on side except you'll probably see it more often surprise on yeah I think some people are happy that there's no more surprise on on sides I don't know if coaches I mean he's got one of the the best ones in the history of the game so um yeah you know I think finding a way to steal a possession momentum in some way I can't tell you what it's going to be but we're going to have to find something well how uh SE just talking about depending on the Wind you know trying to land ball the line from your perspective like what is what is the margin for error when you're you know sending a kickoff into the air like are you I can usually put it within one or two yards is it five yards uh I don't think there's a huge margin for error for this this style kick I mean at the end of the day we're trying to land it in a small area but it's not that small of an area so um I think the ball being on the two yd line versus two yards deep is not as hard as it sounds I think the difference is you know that I'll use in pregame is when you know being in Denver I don't kick quite as hard you know when I get to Seattle it's going to be a little bit of a a learning curve just like it was when we played in Indie the ball doesn't fly quite the same in the dome so that's where the margin of error is is how can I manipulate this kick at altitude versus at sea level and windy windy games when we're playing you know the AFC North Cincinnati and Baltimore that's where you're going to have to start tinkering it a little a little more it's a different SK obviously but it really is sort of golfes isn't it yeah I mean I guess it is you know laying up on one a little or getting after one a little bit depending on what the coach want but um yeah I yeah of course there is a margin for error but I don't think it's as big as people think you know at the end of the day we got to cover it we got to place it where we want it to but um I would say it's a little more gray than black and white thank you appreciate it um any questions you know a lot of Red Zone work a lot of short yardage goal line work two minute um tomorrow we'll have another kind of a walk through if you will and and then fly to Seattle a l place for so long do you have any tis and tricks what's the L I would say this I think there was a time let me back up I think offenses have adjusted in in and they're further along now and maybe 20 years ago where you know there was a time where they called a penalty on the home crowd because they were too loud and so uh the silent snap count the shotgun there there's a number of reasons for that and yet still um you know I didn't see any last night's game but you know the tackles begin to get a little deeper especially in a loud loud venue um so there there are all those elements um the first the first offensive advantage in the game is you know when the start is the snap count so when that gets dissipated a little bit neutralized then you know you have you know you have those things that that you have to prepare for um so you know I think there's probably four or five venues that are you know noticeably different and then the other ones you know maybe not as much this this certainly is one of them you talked about the need to get off to a fast start maybe what are some of the things youve told the team and some of the figures and that you show them a it's not well the at the start of Camp I just I just gave him a five week report card and I it started with the postseason on down and and where where these playoff teams were after five weeks and and so uh I think there was maybe one that was two and three but um and so it's it's not any one game specific it it's just obviously you know look it happened twice to me in New Orleans you know when when when you start off for instance 0 and4 you're burning a lot of energy just to get back to you know and and so your margin for error changes and same thing happened a year ago with us so um you know winning you know those close games early you know obviously is more important Obviously good problem to have but with where you're at healthwise does that make setting your game roster who's up and who's down more difficult um I don't that's a good question I don't um I don't think so you know um there there's certain questions relative to you know how many snaps we want to give the safety since he hadn't played in the preseason you know there there those type of things but um you know fortunately we're we're in a good position healthwise and uh and you know we want to carry that over into the season and um but relative to as it made it more difficult or I I don't know that it it's changed kind of our vision for this week's CU that can change week to week based on your opponent if you're going to be in more nickel or if you're going to be you know depending on your sets offensively so um we feel like we've got a pretty good handle on um our game day right coach peace with Jeff obviously you know Jeff did mention that I've researched as well you've never won fewer than seven games and you like being on the underdog why do you like that well look what I've done it long enough to where I can recall 2013 um I don't you know I don't know that we were either an underdog or a favorite you know but we ended up having a pretty good team went to the divisional round and then 14 we were you know certainly um a lot of people's piics to to get you know deep into the playoff Super Bowl and we weren't close to that and so um during that time frame you you find yourself on all four ends of the spectrum you know the the perfect scenario is to be the underdog with a better team you know um you know you can be the favorite with the better team you could be the favorite maybe not necessarily with a good team so um you know I think I think there's a bit of pride in all of us that um and what we do in in comp you know competitive nature um you know does does winning feel greater than losing feels terrible you know and um and it's it's I think a really good motivating factor and not just in sport but with all of us is fear of failure you know that that's pretty powerful and you know um so yeah I think uh I think and I don't want to use the word I I think we like a challenge you know and that that um that's a challenge miserable a couple of times after WS driving around and parking do you think you're going to enjoy it more this year with this group um depends on the win in observing methodologies for quarterback development around the League what how do you feel like what you guys are doing with B will help you avoid some of well it's a great question just you know walking off the the field even with Davis and Joe and and you know as this week moves towards the game and you know we get to Saturday night even tomorrow and you know it's important that especially early in the season you know what are the things that he's really comfort you know if I if I say to the players man we need to play Fast well then we as coaches need to give them the menu that allows that you know and so too much um can cause just some hesitation Rel relative to um what exactly we doing oh I got it but if there you know and so I think there's that balance and throughout the week last night the night before of um of how much um with a younger quarterback and and so you know I I I get back to the the two real good allies though or good defense and good running game you know when when those two are struggling then you know a lot more is put on that player is it hard then very difficult to balance playing fast but not in a hurry um yeah when I say play fast it's it's when the ball's snapped and you can play fast when you know exactly you know we've all gone into a test in college and and having prepared very well for it and then I know at least I have gone in the lad and so I'm not you know and so playing fast is is because man I know my assignment and and I've done it a number of times um oh a new assignment you know how much work have I had on it I if I've had enough then hey I so it's it's it's it's that that we exercise every night you know is this too much um let's trim the fat and uh you know as late as tomorrow night I'm sure there'll be a couple things that we'll just remove um yeah but that's look it's it's that's a that's a daily battle relative to that that balance Sean since the last time we talked to you the dep chart came out just a couple points Jared STM is the number two and you put two practice squad guys I was gonna I I tried to put seven and Patrick omitted five but no look um those two guys have been with us and and obviously um I don't know that there's any rule whether you can put practice squad players on but um they'll be important to our team and and throughout the year coach because of that do you expect both go and the elev yeah we'll see um but I I would definitely say you know they they'll both be playing this season and so relative to this game um you know I'd rather just not uh comment on it did last night put you on high alert regarding what a legal formation is now gu going um I didn't see any of the game I just you know caught some of the highlights and then heard about um some of the penalties first game you know on the road crowd noise were they tackle yeah it was tackle related to same one was a receiver covering up another receiver I saw that was four I think three on the same guy was very very I yeah was very close yeah that you know usually there's a warning and and you know and then after that um you know you you add so they did send out a memo on it they're going to call it well there's points of emphasis this it's not uncommon when the season starts to um it's like we're going to write a bunch of speeding tickets on on you know on your exit off of 23 here early on and then it calms down a little bit um but I know it's been a point of emphasis of just protecting the line of scrimmage Integrity in All Phases you know keeping the the defense out of the neutral zone keeping the offense in legal formations um I understand it and what you mentioned about touchbacks 30 35 nine kickoffs with touch backs out of 11 yeah not surprising really and the reason I say that is um all right you you're one of the top teams in the NFL and here's a play that if it's not executed perfectly you so the risk reward you're looking at you know um relative to a big return and uh and so I I didn't see the kicks but I I I I saw the the final numbers um and then sometimes you know I think it was um the last home game we had a kind of an 8 n 10 mph wind and here's what I would say the perfect kick lands on the goal line right now that's pretty hard and so it's catastrophic if it lands on the six or seven and it's caught on the run into that wall we're learning this it is so the the these Lanes kind of open and then they close um and so I don't think you'll see many return when they're in the end zone you know so the the perfect kick and and again hang none of that matters right the perfect kick is being caught on the goal line um but when we played uh Arizona will was you know trying you know in the preseason trying to hit that and and if you're going to error you're going to error a little long and so we had a few touchbacks that maybe we were but but we know um what can happen if you're short so um that can play a factor too I think there's going to be but 6 to 7 mph wind 76° mostly cloudy and wind gusts up to 12 and so that can usually at this Stadium there's there's a there's an advantage win as long as I can remember and so um that makes it trick trickier you know it's like a golfer trying to hit the green with the right distance and where's the wind coming you know and short you know is is not good um where long is always better Sean you may have a different answer in a few weeks but you talked a lot about being a teacher first and foremost so with such a young roster has it kind of reinvigorated you in a rookie QB about the teaching we saw you stop practice certainly more than last year to just you know emphasize yeah yeah I I I think look I just finished talking to him about the week um you know I think in order to win Sunday you have to you have to win the week you know in your preparation and your practice and then you know we we put oursel in a position now you know we've had a good training camp a good offseason um but to your to your question um yeah I I think one of the one of the perks about this job is you you get to work with young people you know and so you kind of stay I'm not necessarily in you know in tune to the latest trends relative to their music or what but you're around younger younger people and and and I think uh um you know I think that's uh something we don't take lightly we have a chance to to teach and coach and and and and honestly we have a chance to change lives just like you know our high schools and grade school teachers have done and uh and that's really the the best part of it when you see someone progress and have success and and um that's pretty rewarding thank you coach thanks
