[Music] from one Blue Jays Way in Toronto welcome to Rogers Center Sunday baseball on the show it's the Los Angeles Angels and the Toronto Blue Jays and we'll be back with the first pitch right after [Applause] this just about ready to go on the hill here today Kevin Gosman and singy we were talking earlier about how he's doing a great job navigating through tough spots I've just been so impressed with when it seems like there's more pressure he's more calm and settles in he's done an incredible job with runners in scoring position most guys they get a little tight they start to aim the baseball but for some reason he gets looser the ball comes out of his hand with more life and he's able to wiggle off the hook of you know tough sit situations and get his team back in the Dugout this looks like extra bases makes the turn and heads for second and it's a double to start the game man those are the types of hits where you don't feel any vibration in your hands whatsoever such a good feeling really good swing right there he got a pitch that he knew he could handle allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws now it's the short stop Zack nto that's in for a strike P's got some good opposite field power what I like about something being hit to the right side into the Outfield is that the base runner second has a very good read and can determine whether or not he can score on that base hit runner in scoring position nobody out and we're just getting started here in the top of the first here's a swing and a drive left failed and he knew [Applause] it home run number 20 on the year and they jump out front it's two nothing he absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer and you can see that's what he expects of himself at bat after at bat he's that confident looks like this guy was looking out over the plate but he was ready to turn on the inside fast ball so direct to the pitch absolutely blasted out of this Ballpark and here is Nolan shanell and here he comes next offering misses down and away [Applause] [Music] [Applause] and a pitch swings and misses on the fast ball up in the zone for the strikeout thought it was a pretty good pitch top of the strike zone we're seeing more fast balls in that location hitters especially with two strikes have to be ready to pull the trigger now it's Anthony Reno that one finds theone and the count one and [Applause] two twings and misses it's a strike out some high cheese for strike three two outs SP is empty Logan ohy the next to hit for the angels two down nobody on in the air pretty deep out to center field he's got it and that'll end the inning but two come across to score in the inning courtesy of this two-run Homer and it's two zip Major League Baseball is on the show back now in Toronto and on the hill in this one Johnny quo well no doubt about it he's going to have to put together some consistently good performances in order to bring that er down now he's got good stuff he's just got to be able to have confidence trusted and really go after hitters not nibble trust that his stuff can have late life and Miss barels of bats here's Springer Jo ring on a strike the pitch that's ball [Applause] too and there's a foul [Applause] ball foul ball another two- two upcoming the wi to the pitch got it by him for the k came inside with that two- strike fast ball nicely and just punched him up on the inside part of the plate could get around on it and catch it out front many times if you do it's a foul ball and you know a lot of pitchers they really don't like working inside with two strikes because they do not want to hit that batter and when they've got him up against the ropes got to figure out a way to put them away did a nice job right there let's take a look at the lineup for the bluejs not the highest team batting average for this squad they're down towards the bottom of the league in total hits and and singi because of that they don't score a ton yeah and boo I'm looking for a little better performance out of them today I mean if they're going to be dangerous if they're going to be able to create scoring opportunities they're going to have to start making some individual adjustments a lot of players in this lineup probably aren't happy with how they've hit the ball so far so today's a chance to get something [Music] going up the mid Netto and the Blue Jays go down one two three nothing do it for the Blue Jays and they're down two nothing second inning set to go at the batter down Nik kavadas kav the pitch highfly ball out at the left center field makes the grab one [Applause] away right here's Joe Adell taking high in the draft he's had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform but at some point that starts to go away and you've got to produce at the big league level up the middle Dives but it kicks off his glove no throw and they come away without an out theer fi and now the center fielder Mickey [Applause] mon swinging and there two out not a big fast ball on the M by today's standards just low 90s but when you can pitch backwards like that and sometimes save the fast for later in the count it just sort of explodes on hitters and gets right by it now it's the first fast they bat and clearly the timing just wasn't there for it Brandon jury to the plate here's a one one he swings and fouls one off Boo the runner at first needs to be careful right here he's dealing with a pickoff artist on the mount that's down an in Adele leads off first with two down to the inning [Applause] out towards right center field bar show after it he makes the grab and that is that angel strand one they're up two nothing back here at Rogers Center now it's rookie first baseman [Applause] fors swing at a pop off in foul ground drifts towards it oh he brought it back [Applause] a and the batter will be the short stop Ernie Clement the pitch and one and two one ball two [Applause] strike and that's outside Patrick Johnson behind the plate Patty Johnson to sunb but I'd ask permission first before I called him that does a pretty good job back there occasionally we'll see a couple of sideways looks from players but that kind of comes with the territory right Cs and misses it's a strike out he's really good hitting the baseball the other way so credit the pitcher for having him out in front of that pitch clearly he had Leo Jimenez next up for the Blue Jays and that one off the outside edge the Halos up by two bottom half of inning number two sliced hard but [Applause] foul check swing on the 22 appeal to First and he went around not an easy call there but that puts an end of the inning one two three go the Blue Jays they Trail it here two nothing to the third inning now the left fielder Taylor Ward Taylor Ward ripped on a line tracks it down for the out and a quick out number one the batter number n and the batter now Zack [Music] Netto one out base is empty so a foul ball makes it one and [Music] two and the righty deals sharp grounder that's through for a base hit so they get a man aboard with a one out single everything came together for him timing on the swing was good able to shoot the ball up the middle didn't square up as much as probably would have liked but that's a good approach paying off Nolan shanell Digs in now just missed well Chris through the early stages he hasn't been very efficient in terms of the pitch count he's going to need to get some quick outs if he's going to get deeper into this game Gosman throws over nto back easily it is interesting though when you consider the way the game is run now doesn't even matter that much if your starter doesn't go that deep because teams are really aggressively building their bullpens spoils that one and it remains two and [Applause] [Music] two the pitch and a swing to miss down on strikes and now too longone that's about as nasty of a splitter as you'll come across especially in terms of movement that thing tum out of his hand and just drops off the table at the last moment he keeps it down it's just so tough to put wood [Applause] on two outs B that's [Applause] out hamers that one deep left field and forget it and they throw a pair on the board it's four nothing Chris we knew this moment was coming for him soon yep and it finally came we knew it was only a matter of time before he's going to connect with one just like that just too good of a hitter at the plate knew what pitch he wanted to hit spent on some other pitches in ready to go bottom four now here's the lead off man for the Blue Jays George Springer Springer always grades well with his Bat he's been incredibly consistent at the plate in his career the one- one is fouled off the wi in the pitch and there's the ball two balls two [Applause] strik right in kick Steals and downstairs expect for that guy to come right at you with a fast something in the zone because he does not want to allow the lead off wall this one in the air center field on his way over one down up next to the blue and now it's Dalton VAR this guy's just a tremendous a talented center fielder Gold Glove caliber type out there offensively he can do some things but you know also has some streakiness as well I think the key just trying to find a way for him to be consistent day in and day out you know he saves runs in the Outfield so that's going to buy him more time to work things out at the dish the Jays yet to pick up a hit here and another ball recognize that change jump right out of the hand just spit on it got him swinging for the strike out pulled the string of the change up two outs Bas empty here's Vladimir Guerrero Jr [Applause] vladimiro and the right-hander deals and strike two two two count [Music] [Applause] got him swinging so 12 up 12 down to begin the ball game Angels four and the Jays nothing back now in Toronto top five John shabi with Chris Singleton and leading it off Brandon [Applause] Drury next offering upstairs meanwhile activity in the bullpen Ryan yarro appears to be getting ready and I'm sure he's feeling some nerves this would be his major league [Music] debut check swing he went too far and it's a strike two balls two [Music] [Applause] [Music] strikes next one is off the plate and the Count's [Applause] full swings and misses picks up strike out number seven well pitchers have become so much better at commanding that high fast it used to be that a lot of pitchers didn't like to throw it because it throw off their release point and their mechanics and they're aimed at keeping everything at the knees get ground balls but because hitters get a swing path that can lift balls at the knees up in the air and over the fence this pitch has come back into play and they are doing some special things with it [Applause] offering is down low base is empty one away and we're at the top of the fif late with the swing there just thre that fast ball by him elevated and if you're not looking up in that location very difficult to catch up to especially with that velocity and down on strikes and there's two down and now the short ball out of the pitcher's hand really well right now outside and that is ball four one of the things about that two out walk base runner over at first basee is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead so all down the line into the Gap will produce a two out RBI and those are the best that is if you are the offensive side of left hander out of the bullpen Ryan yro bringing in the Lefty with the left-handed hitter coming up to hit classic Bullpen move right here so we'll see how it works out man at first Nolan shanell will hit next [Applause] step off throw to first Netto back on a [Applause] dive two outs so a foul ball makes it one and [Applause] two and now the Lefty started after it appeal to Third and he won around not an easy call there but that puts an end to the inning Angels leave one but they're in front for nothing back here at Rogers Center ready to go for the last half of the inning now the first baseman Spencer Horwitz that Clips the corner he's pitching well but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes usually doesn't work out for sucess uccess but he can never predict baseball bounce to Third and that one finds its way [Applause] through now he smashed that ball the other way and kept it fair down the third Bas line did an excellent job of just throwing the barrel at the ball even though he was a little late on it so digging in Ernie Clemens Horowitz aboard here at first with nobody out misses outside and that's ball [Applause] [Music] two popped up right side kavadas hauls it in and there's one away now B second basem Leo Leo Jimenez the next to hit the 2-1 comes up empty that's strike two two ball two strikes grounder might be two Neto throws the first in time well he's doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball good execution Addison Barger next up for the Blue Jays two outs and one in scoring position [Applause] just missed three balls one [Applause] strike leftand hitter Waits swing and a miss and that one missed by a ton good late sink on that fast ball out of the hand looks so good and then by the time gets in The Hitting Zone hard to get the barrel to it swings through it and that's a strike out one left for Toronto they Trail it here 4 nothing and welcome back to the ballpark here's the third baseman Anthony randone outside and now three in one movement in the Blue Jays Bullpen a right-hander is up and throwing and the pitch and there's ball for well he tried to nibble right there and just missed his spot hitter didn't offer at it now he has somebody to worry about over it first so man aboard Logan ohappy the next to hit for the Angels so a foul ball makes it one and [Applause] two on the ground to First lays out but he can't squeeze it now he gets it to the pitcher covering the bag and that's out number one on a tough play this is what it's all about on that right side of the diamond when you got the first baseman involved in the pitcher as well first baseman does a great job knocks the ball down gets away from a little bit does it P the pitcher's exactly where he's supposed to be nice feed and a nice play for the out NCO kavadas the next to hit for the angels and that one a little below the knees ball two one out and a runner at second and we're the top half of the six missed that one cloged out towards left Center that'll be extra bases runner from second scores as they add on it's five nothing and he's got a double so he gets two Milestones with that hit his first big leag knock and he drives in his first run as well well yeah you love to get both of those out of the way with just one swing of the bat and it makes the special moment even more special it's not just an individual accomplishment when you're also driving in a run for your team that's an IT bat he's never going to forget and next for La Joe Adell man it's second that smash toward Center Baro calls it in two away man that's one of those adats where you have to remind it's about the process he did everything right right there nothing to show for it but in your mind you have to convince yourself that it was a very good at bat back going up bottom six and now for the jams number 36 one it really looks like these hitters have been in between with their timing today good fast excellent slider but they've not been able to commit to one velocity and stay there the wi to kick the pitch little bouncer out in front of the plate tosses to first lead off man retired in the sixth the B the catcher ran and here's the catcher Brian cin base is empty one away here in the bottom of the [Applause] sixth a big swing and a miss one ball two [Applause] stength HS and misses it's a strike out always showing some pretty dominating stuff out there in this one not just in terms of swing and Miss but also in terms of command all the strikeouts they just kind of speak for themselves but when you don't walk anyone you're [Music] empty Dives and he can't hang on not in time great effort but it's an infield hit so win now for the Angels Zach Netto and he deals way out front for strike two one ball two [Music] strikes one two now swing and a miss for the strikeout couldn't catch up to the heater good late cut for the strikeout there really got in on him and you know the cutter isn't really a huge swing and Miss pitch most of the time because it's not really meant to move a whole lot you're just trying to miss the big part of the barrel and maybe get some weak contact but that one right there did a whole lot more than that that was a really good [Applause] [Applause] pitch at the belt and fires bals that off to the left and will do it [Applause] again two outs swings and misses struck him out so no runs here in a base hit no errors and one left seventh inning stretch time Angels five and the Jays nothing [Music] set for the last half of the seven down the number two hitter [Applause] bar the wine of the pitch swings through that one it's a strike out really tight bite on that slider and just couldn't get the barrel to it out front You' got to try to pull those hands tight to the body to get it through and I'm thinking he probably wanted that pitch to end up even more inside to keep it out of the danger Zone but it had enough late break and deception to get the job done the Angels leading by five here the bottom of the seven swing and a miss and he got him to chase this pitcher has done a good job of disrupting The Hitter timing with the mix of pitches and changing speeds you want to keep that front foot inconsistent for the batter their swings are hesitant and that's exactly what you want on the M good spot there but didn't get the strike at the knees and doesn't seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the Umpire Strike Zone left field way back there and it's out of here his 27th home run of the season and they're on the board it's 5-1 man he looks like his dad out there hitting home runs [Applause] with a low 90s fastball you have to live on the edges and hit your spots if you don't you'll get hit hard really good swing there patient waited for it was like BP all over again and next will be the cleanup hitter Spencer Horwitz that's in there and the count is one and two so what we're seeing is a lineup that's just out of sync with the pitcher they're guessing wrong and their timing's off [Applause] righty to the plate foul ball still a one and two [Music] count good job to fight that one off ground ball right side throws the first in time the batter the short stop h two outs Bas is empty and next for Toronto Ernie Clement kicks and fires right side shanell fires over to first that's the inning but not before they answer back with a solo home run it's now 51 you're dialed into the show welcome back in a new arm of the mound to start the eight number 43 and he's been racking up strikeouts at a high rate this year typically at least one in inning so he'll be tough to get to here's Anthony randone up to the [Applause] plate and a two- one on the way in there for a strike at the top of the zone swing and a miss struck him out oh nothing but too fancy on the strikeout pitch right there just a low 90s fast ball I'm not sure he was trying to challenge him but that's pretty much what happened very hitable location he found a way to just get it by him the two- one swinging a foul straight [Applause] back one down base is empty on the line base [Applause] hit oh that was one of those high percentage Advantage counts where batting averages are just so much higher nice line drive to the P side met it out front but just St threw it nice enough and ripped it into the Outfield next to hit strike three2 two out run on first lot of movement in the infield hitters got to stay focused on the pitch outside and that is ball four a great back and forth and that it bad play off some really close pitches and somehow Boogie found way to keep the bat on his shoulder right there I'll tell you right now I couldn't have done it so two down and next for the Angels Mickey [Applause] moniac another ball good spot for the hitter definitely has the advantage in this count with Runners on look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch first and second two down and we're in the top of the [Applause] eighth on the ground right side he takes it himself to the bag and that'll do it Angel strand a couple they're up 5-1 back Now new pitchure on the mount as we roll into the bottom of the E Carson Fulmer and compared to a lot of other relievers strikeouts have not been a big weapon for him this year so the defense should be active here's the second Bas Leo Jimenez the Blue Jays in Striking Distance but have some work to do Bo it starts with the leadoff man need a good at bat out of him right here on the ground Dives but he kicks off his glow safe first as they can't make the [Applause] play so man aboard Addison barer now at the plate left-and batter weights nope and that's downstairs and outside the Halos leading by four here the bottom half of the eighth [Applause] [Music] inning here's a two- two right back to the mound could be an easy two they get one to First double play and it goes 163 great job on the M Felding his position and making a good throw to second to get the double play started far too often we see pitchers have a hard time with that throw but no issues right there that's good practice paying off in a game and resulting in two big outs two down nobody on so a foul ball makes it one and two well this is a good time to step out of the box take a deep breath reset couple of change UPS probably won't see another one here and a face hit well that'll make you feel good as a hitter right there there that ball was drilled 106 off the bat and that's the kind of feedback that tells you you're right where you want to be with your swing mechanics so up next for Toronto Bryan cin righty delivers swinging a miss one and two one ball two strike [Applause] they tried to get him to chase on a slider down and [Applause] [Applause] away and the pitch still two and two after the foul ball [Applause] picks and misses it's a strike out Blue Jays held in check they're down 5-1 we're back it's the top of the nine and there's a new pitcher on the M Zack pop and as relievers go he's not a big strikeout guy tries to force weak contact so command and execution are huge for him so now here's the DH Brandon Drury check swing did he go yes he did one ball two the one two fights it off you'll see another swings thr it and that's a strike down just indecisive in that at thatat he couldn't commit to the slider tried to sit in between just not able to put the bat on the ball back to the top of the Angels lineup and next for La Taylor Ward right-handed reliever and another ball Toronto's Bullpen with some action Tommy Nance up and throwing Swanson getting cranked up as well base is empty one away here at the top of the nin and that catches the low inside corner good fast B on the ground right side and stays fair and that rolls into the corner now he turns and heads for second pulls in with a double third hit for him today even though he was really late on it he clearly barel the ball because that one was ripped down the line he had to be really short with that swing not get beat by that [Applause] pitch here's the short stop at the play Zack Netto and it was a homer back in the first inning that got his day started at the plate yeah but two-run blast as fans were just still getting into their seats here at the Ballpark so if you showed up late to this one you missed out on a big moment early on one out and a runner at [Applause] [Applause] second the pitch two two the count in the dirt tag safe he's into third and the wild [Applause] pitch right-hander kick steals Full Count [Applause] foul ball and it remains a full count run around to third one [Applause] gone stays alive the pitch goes down looking big strike out right there and that kind of takes the pressure off the defense a bit infield was in so now they can move back give themselves more time on a grounder to make a play a lot more ways to work out of this and strand that runner at third now now it's the second basem Nolan shanell swing and a miss and the count one and two one ball two St [Applause] [Applause] ripped to short low throw and he can't take it out well you're already down in the game and not just by a couple and then that error allows a run to score and this is where things can really start to fall apart as a team they need to pick themselves up find a way to play Better Baseball the rest of the way runner at first with two away Anthony randone making his way to the [Applause] plate on the ground right side throws to First that takes care of rendone and that is that one run one hit one error and one left to the bottom of the ninth we go top of the Ord do up it's the angel six and the Blue Jays one back now as they hand the ball to a fresh arm to start the bottom of the nth Jack cachoz and he's got a nice lead to work with so he should come in throwing strikes attacking these hitters back to the lead off spot the Blue Jays lineup now it's the Toronto designated hitter George Springer Springer and a pitch popped in the air left field W makes the catch one up one down just pulled off of it a little bit right there that front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed if he does that he's going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some Authority instead of a fly out to left and here it comes highfly ball out towards left field way back there [Music] his 16th h of the year it's [Applause] [Music] 62 well he did a really nice job of letting that ball travel wasn't too quick he kept the shoulder sore to home plate which allows you to drive the ball to the opposite field with power we see the power and the authority and fortunately he's lucky enough to keep it fair Vladimir Guerrero Jr now two balls one strike the wi of the pitch that's Off the Mark Ball three if you're on the M right now you know you have to retire this hitter if he gets on base it could open up the floodgates for this offense to score some [Applause] runs ripped On A Line to Center pulls it in for the out and they're two down man he smoked that fast ball he's all over it it's just frustrating when you can't get it to fall maybe next time up he'll find a hole one out left for the Blue Jays and here's the first baseman Spencer Horwitz two outs good eye right [Applause] there hit to Second and this should do it that's the ball game quo with his first major league win yeah nicely done I'm sure he'll feel very good about that and get the ball for his trophy case as he should a start he won't ever forget and your final 6-2 for Chris Singleton and our entire crew I'm John shamby saying so long
