Cowboys Sign Linval Joseph, Deuce Vaughn's Job in Jeopardy?

what better way for a son and father to bond over than their mutual love for the Dallas Cowboys hi I'm Michael Davis with my dad Matt we're star studed son and Dad Duo on the star studed Cowboys we're Nine episodes into this I'm calling this the Tony Romo episode and maybe we'll find somebody for uh episode number 10 but we uh we're talking about Rush oh that's right but we're we're GNA just fill out the quarterbacks with uh you know one through 10 uh we got Cooper Rush uh maybe he makes the team maybe this team Co covers uh three quarterbacks we'll talk about who needs to perform this weekend against the Chargers and make this team but we had some additions on the defensive line uh one of those being lynval Joseph yeah uh so you realize what that did with lynval Joseph and uh the other defensive tackle that we added uh it was Jordan Phillips Jordan Phillips you realize what that did right that took Albert Huggins off the team well not necessarily but what it did was where did they team up together last [Music] year Buffalo Bills yeah we got there defensive tackle do from last year now and they both have a history with uh Zim and uh Gunther uh who is a defensive coach with us uh so I mean that if I recall Buffalo had a pretty stout uh run defense last year yeah I mean they they they were tough when you know you to the offensive side of the ball and Josh Allen running the ball even though threw a lot of interceptions that he never gets discounted for and then you know you look at the other side of the ball you know being able to stop the run um to where Josh Allen isn't playing from behind and throwing more of those interceptions um now I'm thinking about like what makes this defensive line different than last year I mean obviously we've lost uh Dante Fowler and dorrence Armstrong they follow Dan Quinn to the Washington commanders Jonathan henkins was that big defensive tackle presence with the Run game and we lost Sam Williams due to injury um I mean just looking at those four names being off the board um it looks like it's going to be a different defensive line for us well it is gonna be a different defensive line uh but is it going to be better or worse I mean only time will tell uh I put a lot of uh a lot of faith in uh the coach that we got from the red commanders the commanders Redskins commanders they're always be the Redskins to True Dallas fans uh because that's our rival uh uh Jeff I can't pronounce it it starts with a Zan or whatever uh who was their defensive line coach and and Washington throughout the last several years even though their teams have struggled they've had a good defensive line uh and so uh we've got him we've got uh Greg Ellis and Zimmer I mean who is a great defensive mind I think that our defensive line will be okay you you've lost those guys but you've also added some like you said we've added uh Phillips and Joseph we also added your guy Carl Lawson uh he is my guy I'm excited for that one and then uh Marsha needin through the draft I mean so you've got all those and then you got to think you've got Michael Parsons and Micah and odiga they're going to only improve now I don't know if it means the end of Huggins or even uh you know some of the guys that have been around like chony goston or uh the uh kid that we drafted a few years ago hoko uh but what it does do if you start adding the numbers up you've got Parsons and Lawrence you got oigi and you got Mazzy Smith there 's your four yeah then you add in Lawson nean uh Phillips gston no Phillips and uh the oh you're you're thinking who we just had limble Joseph limble Joseph so now you're at what eight uh you know T historically nine to 10's the maximum they keep on the defensive line and I would probably lean more towards the nine range so that leaves one spot and who's who's gonna feel out that spot yeah and I know um looking back at that last preseason game Mohammed made some really good plays Muhammad did uh Tony was cut basically let go because of injury and right as we was adding lawon uh now you know so you got one maybe two spots at most that you're going to carry on the defensive line so I mean you got Justin Rogers you got muhamad that have made Splash plays uh Rogers has been good uh he's the rookie uh so I mean you know a lot will come into salary team control for the years and stuff in that equation uh how long they control them for going forward I just don't know how it's going to play out as far as you know how it's going to all adjust but our line is definitely going to be different yeah and and different sometimes as good sometimes as bad you know just in a any aspect of life but I mean you you you replaced henkins and henkins was good he he our run defense was a lot better when he was in there uh but there was a it seemed like every year henkins was getting hurt and missing games uh and the run defense would suffer I mean your biggest thing about your defensive tackles being those bulk guys uh is to free up those linebackers is to free up the linebackers get those guys in there so they can run and and tackle and let's face it if we got uh overan and uh Leah Leah fou and if mich's playing there Kendrick's and Deone Clark I mean we got some speed at linebacker and we got some big linebackers right now uh that can make those type of plays in the back field they can get the ball carriers and that's going to help select solid solidify our uh run defense our run defense last year was 16th which it it got worse when Henkin and Vander got hurtes got hurt so it did drop during that period so hopefully with the more big bodies that we have and the more that we can run a rotation instead of having to rely on certain ones throughout the whole season uh the better chances are we have of keeping that uh run defense intact because our our pass defense was great yeah uh I mean it was top five uh so I mean even without Trevon Diggs and we get Diggs back this year yeah I mean we lose Gilmore and Gilmore was a solid Edition last year uh up until the playoffs and then he got hurt in the last game and they had to his should his shoulder injury required surgery commend uh flowers to him because I mean the dude played injured for us for in the postseason we just played a different defense and we were accustomed to uh throughout that uh game to allow for him to take and play uh it it it was it was tough to you know see how it ended of course Gilmore just signed a one-year deal about 10 million for uh the Minnesota Vikings uh that will uh that'll be that'll be tough to see but Minnesota's probably not going to do much this year anyways no Minnesota's not they're they're going that they're gonna be struggling I mean I I don't put much faith in the quarterback situation there especially even with JJ McCarthy and when he gets hurt you know there probably goes their plans uh you know it's just going to be interesting to see how those last one to two spots F out who do they decide to keep it'll be tough and and they'll have one more game to show up and show out and that is the Los Angeles Chargers that we play not the San Diego Chargers old school I I gotta remind that hey you know teams will relocate team will change their names like the Oakland Raiders or the Raiders I always referred to them as Oakland yeah they were always Oakland uh good good thing they left that baseball field gosh could you imagine me a football player playing on baseball field in the dirt good time to get a diamond right uh but we we'll play the LA Chargers this weekend and this is the final opportunity that these players have to give themselves a chance to say hey I belong on this 53 man roster there's places we have more depth like the defensive line after these additions uh linebacker we have a lot of depth I mean you have Deone Clark to L foul to Willie Harvey you said last week would make the team we got overon coming back from injury we got uh marginson who's made plays in the preseason and then of course I mean I don't even have to go through all the secondary I mean there is Talent along the defense there's there's Talent on the you know offensive side as well especially when it comes to the offensive line the tight ends um the receivers there CD lamb BR cooks and then the jayin and then it's like okay who's fighting for the spot after Turpin like there's the running back position that you know Duce Von you know going into his second year like there there's a lot of positions to you know fight for and and interior offensive line I mean you got there there is gonna be some talent that leaves the building after this last preseason game some of them will come back on the practice squad some of them maybe even come back during the season on the 53 man roster there is going to be some talent that leaves and folks I do believe that you know the competition's coming down between duvon and and uh Royce Freeman for that last running back spot my boy Ezekiel is on the team so is D you you gotta get a new uh 15 Jersey don't you uh but here's the point I I've read a lot of Articles over the last several weeks about you know guys writing and columnist writing to that Dallas should be looking at these running backs looking at these running backs like uh the kid in Carolina miles Sanders miles Sanders please no I cover that team last year please you know I I sit here and they and when they're making out their argument and they're like miles Sanders averaged 3.5 yards last year in an abysmal Carolina offensive line and Zeke he had a a career low of 3.5 yards in New England last year folks the offensive line between New England and Carolina wasn't that much different uh they both were bottom five in the league um you know so I mean Ezekiel ellot making the team uh he is a Jerry Jones favorite he is a fan favorite he is a locker room favorite and he's a Mike McCarthy favorite uh he is making the team he hasn't even played one down in preseason uh his his spot secure they're saving him for the regular season and hopefully the postseason uh D is going to be there uh the fullback is going to be there it's just who's going to be that next man it's between Royce Freeman I honestly believe and uh deuce and dece I don't look for them to go out and try to trade and get someone who's been injured uh for the last little bit or uh has been uh you know on another team and trading draft resources for that uh I I don't see that forcoming uh and there may be trades that they make I don't think it's going to be at the running back position I don't think it's going to be at the offensive line position because we're actually going to be cutting guys uh you know whether be recent draft picks or or guys that have played in this league a little bit uh and and tight end I mean you you talk about a stacked room I mean you got Ferguson at the top you got our school maker who is a second round draft pick you know and then you've got uh Ste John Stevens you know who they very high on he would have made the team last year uh probably at the uh cost of Hendershot do you think Hendershot gets released henders shot may be a trade Target he may be released who knows he could make the team but they they also paid a lot of money for this uh span Ford kid uh as undrafted for agent this year and he's looked good in Camp Hendershot has been dealing with injuries and stuff uh so I don't know if he will make it uh this next year uh it may be you know one of those things again cost Effectiveness uh do they look to trade some of the guys that we've got uh that that's why I started thinking about you're like hey we probably won't trade anybody but looking at this roster like I mean why wouldn't you trade you know somebody on the bubble if you could get a fourth or a fifth round pick like something in the middle of the pack that could help you acquire somebody in the future you know and and it a lot of it depends on whether or not we think that we can bring them back to the practice squad if we can if we think we can get a practice S I did read somewhere that uh over the last several years we've had 49 uh draft picks selected from the rounds five through seven four of those have made significant contributions and played as a starter into their second year donon Bland one donon Bland being one uh Xavier Woods Maris Bell not Maris spell bill was an undrafted free agent that's right um and uh the kid that went to Miami left us and went to Miami a cornerback Byron Jones not Byron he was he was a first rounder uh or i w to say he left and went to Miami but he played a few years ago he was a starter uh and uh and then uh the safety Donovan Wilson yeah so I mean four guys uh which at that point in the draft like hey you know why not fifth down you're you're you're looking for traits really and then in the seventh round you're just trying to beat the undrafted free agency pool you're trying to take and uh get them before somebody else does um you know I I see guys you know that you know how on in the draft that you know even as fifth rounders like Nathan or I don't even remember where he was drafted I think he was drafted in seventh this year Nathan Thomas yeah uh you know offensive line I think he's gonna be good if he's if he can uh if he can take and uh get some time I mean he has battled injuries you know will they put people on injured reserves uh to secure them kind of give them a red shirt year uh for that freshman year uh with the team uh you know so it just depends on what do they plan on doing roster buildings 247 yeah they'll they'll scan the waiver wire uh Nathan th round pick you know I think he's got some talent I think Justin Rogers does as a defensive tackle the numbers crunch may be there uh you know Josh ball I mean Matt wetco I mean I think wet's gone I I think he is I mean he didn't have a bad game the last game he did have a penalty I think Josh ball is just in this last year has had a little bit more shine to him uh I I think if it comes down to those two guys I think Josh ball actually gets it uh you know and hopefully they can keep Nathan Thomas you know maybe even practice squad or iring if he's got an injury to where we can secure his rights for next year uh you know it's it's just trying to figure out who those guys are that maybe we can trade and get some value out of uh you know who can can we put on the roster you talk about a deep class look cornerback I mean you know five to six at most uh depending on how we go at safety uh you know you got Diggs you got Bland you got Lewis you got three there's your top four top four so you got Carson as your fourth then you've got uh Kon Hall who's Hall he had to pick six last game uh you know Eric Scott Jr you've got Josh Butler uh CJ Goodwin for special team you got Andrew booth that we just traded and got you know I think he's gonna make the team uh come on Hall did they put him do they risk him trying to get him to the practice squad he has shown up in pretty much every game uh Eric Scott Jr better have have a great game this last game or he may be finding himself looking at on that out uh duberry DeBerry or whatever from uh I think he played his college ball in Texas uh I think he's gone I think he probably gone a guy that they're really high on in the safety class is uh Julius wood uh you know so there then you get to the safeties you got mik hooker Donovan Wilson Maris Bell W Thomas you know there's your four M Mamu and then that Julius wood you know so there's six safeties uh that legitimately any all six of them can make the team there's just not enough numbers uh you know so do they trade somebody do they even look at trading Donovan Wilson that would be I I don't wantan to I don't want to see us trade Donovan Wilson I don't either I mean Donovan would be should bring good uh you know return But there again you've got mares Bell and ju Thomas that the team has more control over and they also have uh less money in and sometimes you got to let that Talent shine and that those two guys are talented every time they are on the field whether it be pre-season regular season or whatever they're making plays yeah and maybe you know maybe not even Donovan Wilson because of Youth but Malik hooker is the oldest safety on that team yeah I mean so I mean and you know I love Malik cooker I love all those sa I mean I love all of them no slot to any of them but what does it what does uh trade run offs Pro offer and what's trade value because you're going to cut one of those guys because we're not carrying six safeties into the regular season yeah I mean you know and then you have to look at okay how does special teams play into it because these guys are going to be playing special teams especially if your backup probably even some of our starters are gonna be playing special teams uh you know so what's their value to that you know that's the one thing that's held CJ good one on this team for uh you know career with the Dallas Cowboys is his ability on special teams and there's been other team players on there that you know yeah they can contribute to the roster in their position of choice a little bit but special teams is their Forte uh you know Turpin you know not saying turpin's gonna go but Turpin his his Forte is special teams as a man you know so what person is going to be back there with him is it going to be duvon you know would that be the edge that dece needs to take and get to the team instead of Freeman uh I don't see D even though they've mentioned d as a potential for a return person I don't see d as being that person I think it's going to be like one a and one b in the running back room this is a running back by committee I think it's gonna be uh Zeke andou that's it's gonna kind of be the starter yeah per se and while people are like oh you know Zeke's not putting up good numbers uh this isn't fantasy football you know boom broadcasting is going do a live fantasy football draft on Saturday evening uh with a lot of the out pocket guys but this isn't fantasy football he's going to be able to protect Dak Prescott he's going to be able to help in the pass block game and he's going to provide a veteran presence and he wants to be here and that's that's half the battle and folks we said it over and over on this show and I know we're only in our ninth episode but I you could probably go back and view the other episodes and see it over and over 3.5 yards three times get you a first down Point Blank yeah it does and I I really hope Duce vaugh shows up shows out that's the guy I do not want to be cut at all um sorry Royce Freeman I'm a deuce guy he brings another Edge to this running game that I feel like is very Darren sprouls esque and I I want I want to see the Dallas offense use deu f yeah and the fact that they were in the OTAs and and many camps they were spreading him out to the slot position occasionally uh you know it will enhance his value to the team I think special teams is GNA be big and it's GNA be as a returner uh you know because he did that in college yeah um uh he does have that experience uh you know who's who who are they going to let go I mean you got wide receiver rooms stacked I mean a lot of people were like we got a weak other than CD lamb you know these guys are actually proven that you know beyond CD lamb I mean and no don't get me wrong CD lamb will be on the Dallas Cowboys come week one that contract hasn't been signed yet but it's coming it's coming quick you know deadlines make deals the deadlines coming Jerry uh you know so I mean he he will be on the team and cooks and Tolbert you know and then who beyond that uh Jaylen Brooks has looked good uh Cropper had his moments I think these last couple games his ball security is probably going to end up costing him a slot oh yeah uh you know I do believe that uh then you got other guys you know uh the Billy the Billy Johnson Tyler Johnson Ty Billy John yeah dude's got speed uh I think you commented on that last game you're like he's fast uh you know and he's he's developed a chemistry with Prescott uh that can help because it's actually gotten people to the 53 on opening weekend uh just within the last few years uh can't remember the kid's name that made the roster as a wide receiver uh I want to say one or two years ago that was uh one of dak's favorite targets during uh training camp and he really loved them uh and so I mean he made the he made the team uh yeah and uh so I mean that chemistry can can provide you the opportunity to showcase your talent there's gonna be guys that are going to be on our practice squad that are cut today and there throughout the league and then there's going to be guys that are going to leave our building go to go other teams unfortunately there's also gonna be guys that leave our building and go to the public sector and try to work a nto5 job and earn a living uh to hopefully chase their dream in the UFL or Canadian Football League or uh any other Avenue or go to the WWE like Roman Reigns yeah he's he's the travel Chief I mean it it there there is life after uh football there is life after this weekend and that but the problem is is you know these guys have ever since they were me high a grasshopper you know they've been this has been their dream playing football and they've done it through the peeee leagues and stuff like that all the way up in our area it's saroma I mean they've done it through grade school through uh Middle School through High School into college and that this has been their dream the whole time being on that football field on Sunday afternoons and this is gonna be the final opportunity for some of them to obtain that dream yeah and unfortunately a lot of the majority of not going to obtain that dream after this weekend our hearts go out to those individuals and I wish you the best in your future life whether that be with another League trying to get back into the NFL at some point and it happens look my boy that I keep saying that's gonna make this team Hardy it's happened to him a few times you know he's he's been cut and he went to the UFL and I I I will absolutely be amazed if he's not on the 53 man roster well you've uh you've been clipped you've been you know recorded we'll uh we'll see if that prediction comes true the deadline to cut people down to the 53 man roster is prior to Tuesday August 27th at 4M the great thing is we drop our episode just a few hours prior so we'll uh we may have some of those names already in the Hat to be released but we'll uh we'll cover more on the backside of that Chargers game on Tuesday which will be my final episode before
