the noon hour is here check it out and you're locked on to Utah's highest rated most listened to sports radio station it's my station it's my station this is H sson and Scotty G on 975 the KSL sport Z [Music] [Applause] [Music] hey welcome in 975 the KSL Sport Zone H Olson Scotty G how are you it is game day let's go the long summer has come to an end Hans it has been a long draw this has felt longer than most Summers and I maybe it's because of the Jazz boredom yeah it could be but we did have the whole Hockey Club kick up and the NHL excitement that helped through a lot of it but when the Jazz don't make the postseason it it expedites the offseason in the Long Summers and there's no real hope for it this year and there's no real hope for it this year and yeah that they took some picks in the draft but just felt like the draft kind of lingered out because there weren't real interesting names in the draft and then you get going with Spring ball and then we leak into fall Camp Fall Camp has felt like a nightmare but our 60 and 60 has carried us through yes it has carried us through we do have number one and number two for you today yep we will announce that at 1:30 and we are ready for four big 12 games tonight you've got Kansas you've got Utah you've got Colorado and you've got one other that I can't think of is there's one other right Kansas Colorado Utah and oh Central Florida plays tonight as well now nobody plays anybody except for Colorado maybe maybe Colorado gets bumped by the Bison I wouldn't surprise me the Bison now the Bison aren't what they used to be but they they they've got talent so really excited for tonight by the way um you're full of garbage by the way why on what uh see I and I'm I'm guilty of this as well I still like to think that I can put it away like I used to there's no way you're eating 20 of those wings right now you don't think no I think that you've restricted yourself enough that you'd get through 10 and your your your stomach could be yelling at you pretty hard well I'm sure we could make this happen no no no for educational purposes no I mean I would like to but no by the way that was not me challenging you I'm not saying that I'm just saying I'm just saying I said 18 to 20 18 to 20 you took a picture of some wings or somebody tweeted out a picture of wings how many can you eat in one sitting and you said 18 to 20 each dipped in blue cheese um I have little doubt that this been January no problem done done uh now that it's August and you and I have made significant Life Choices that have altered our ability to consume High quantities of food uh I think your stomach has probably shrunk a little bit and uh I think you get probably to eight and you will be like o uh-uh so the reason that I even responded to that we did the round table at JCW's yeah and by the way this is not a knock on you it's not a challenge it's not anything you're good and and I it grabbed a d dozen wings on my way out oh you did I grabbed a dozen wings on my way out because JCW's wings are the most underrated untalked about Wing in the state of Utah you know I don't think I've ever had a wing there oh Scotty it's a it's a fried it's a non-breaded it's a deep fried non- breaded Wing love it and it's just rolled in sauce um I like the the mild honey which is y delicious and then they've got the the hot buffalo and then they've got their homemade blue cheese sauce which is incredible so I grabbed a dozen on my way out the door I did eat five of the Dozen and felt like I could eat more but I picked up Rock and he polished off the other seven okay so but you felt pretty confident after five you could you could keep going I felt pretty darn get the whole 12 I do all right I do I think I can that horse still wants to run huh yeah and and I'm talking about sucking the bone July 12 just the marrow just yeah I love buffalo wings so much and it's football season it's buffalo wings season well have we heard from Frank because Frank brought in Wings every time last year have not heard from Frank but do we even know Frank's going to show up today well he asked we were in studio I said yes we're in studio and he said in studio yeah I know does Frank know the studio policies it's not important they don't know we exist around here it's fine oh okay um Hey Lloyd you or Scotty Scotty one of the two of you I need some help all right just and I'm so sorry for my ignorance but you know my issues with this walk me through the ESPN plus thing oh what do I got to do or what are people having to do because that's the only way you can get Southern Utah Utah that's tonight the only way you can get it is ESPN plus um call rattles on ESPN which that's easy for me because I already pay a boatload of money so that I can flip on a TV and click through channels yeah sure you have the Hulu Disney package right do you not have that I have the Disney yeah we have Disney plus you have okay uh usually Disney plus comes with a package with Hulu and ESPN plus yeah they throw in that plus with that so you need to find out whoever's got your password for Disney plus whoever pays for it no that's this is an Amanda one oh okay well then I think you because her and the girls she the girls do her hair while they watch like Moana or something okay I thought you were gonna need to call Ryan or somebody no not on this one all right um I would uh yeah I I think you should be you should have it see this is the oh I know dude it's ridiculously dumb and everybody's like you know when this first started to come out everybody's like oh it's Gonna Save everybody money I guarantee you I'm adding up all my subscriptions I'm paying way more than I used to oh I hate this I hate ESPN plus I hate all these stupid streaming things yep I'm with you man just wor this is what I want just give me a pay to play yeah like so I can I can pay $39 99 $3.99 and I can get this game because all I would do is I would buy Utah Southern Utah and I would watch Colorado and um UNCC or what uh uh North Dakota North Dakota yeah and and then tomorrow morning I would jump on and I would look at the highlights on YouTube of Kansas versus Lynden wood and Central Florida versus whoever whatever FCS team they are like but the day would cost me $3.99 and I wouldn't have a reoccurring subscription and I but even then it's stupid like just put this on a channel that we have yeah how many stupid channels do we have I don't need to watch reruns of Rosanne throw a game on there I don't even care it's the CW nowadays I'm like d man maybe that's the way to go I've got the CW h i I don't even care throw it on BET I've got bet I've got lifetime got lifetime Hallmark I've got the the O Channel what's oxygen oxygen or is that the Oprah one I think it originally was Oprah and then it turned into oxygen yeah it's oxygen I've got I've got all those dude do you have ion I do yeah I think I do have ion I think I don't even know what ion is I've got so many stupid channels that I've got 500 channels and I used eight of them maybe nine yeah and it's like just take these games and throw them on there I don't even care well I I hate this stupid subscription business I know it's it's the absolute worst absolute worth so are you fans just buying ESPN plus tonight then oh yeah yeah absolutely by the way I don't know if I sent this to you uh I sent it to my wife but I was uh looking at the um where is it okay so there was a story in the Wall Street Journal that I got a link to did I I don't know if I sent Lloyd this but it said but it was a link to a story it says people are sick and tired of all their subscriptions yeah and I'm like that's a and I'm like that's a story I want to read well then the Wall Street Journal says oh you got to subscribe it's only available to the Wall Street Journal subscri to read this story and wall Street's expensive oh yeah expensive it's like a I think it's like $12.99 a month you did not send it to me but I saw the same story and I wanted to read it yeah and I went and it was behind a pay wall I'm like huh the irony yeah this is it's all just we are just full of complete stupidity with all of this yep I mean at least make that one free I know right leave that one open just throw Southern Utah Utah is the number 12 ranked team in the country and you can't find Space on one of your stupid ESPN networks and you can't find Space on one of the fs or one of the CBS sports or one of the what 500 stupid sports channels that you got and you can't find room for it it's the number 12 team in the country but why Colorado then get too cross about Colorado you know why it's Dion Oh this is just oh this has got me yeah bugged so now I got to check my Disney Plus Y and then I got to sift through a Hulu and I got to call my wife what's the oh yeah what's the login and what's the password and and then you'll get halfway through and it'll say buffering or too many people are on it'll tell me with your Disney Plus subscription you do not have access to the ESPN plus materials yeah then what am I insert your credit card here but yep no you're right you're 100% right so okay so Lloyd how are you watching this game tonight are you going down there no I'll be watching it in the studio here on because he's hosting the pre and post with Christian oh that's right that's right what about you uh I've got I've got that combo ESPN Hulu thing okay but yes I do have that combo as well but I haven't I haven't fired it up in a while so I'm sure I'll have all kinds of user air mistakes tonight trying to get it to work oh and then it'll buffer on you yeah buffer and then like too many people are using it and Lloyd will be in Albuquerque watching it and Ste I really wish you'd stop making that story up it is weird that the last loog on that was from Albuquerque from the 505 yeah some cabin in Albuquerque ANS and Scotty 1218 let's get to it starting lineup on a game day folks let's get to it this is and Scotty let's go the lineup is set and it's time to kick off the show with the biggest topic of the day this is the starting lineup on 975 the KSL Sports Z hey and Scotty starting lineup right here on 975 the KSL Sport Zone as always brought to you by our good friends at Mount Lance Supply where the pros go for plumbing landscaping irrigation agriculture irrigation I mean come on if water runs through it you know it they'll take care of you find a location near you at Mountainland tocom well I feel like we've got a little bit of clarification not a lot of clarification but we got some clarification from BYU practice yesterday on potentially what to expect from the BYU quarterback position Aaron Rodrick was talking with some of the media after practice and he said he does have a clear-cut starter we're not going to say what we're doing again because I want Southern Illinois to have prepare for both guys but I will say that what I hoped would happen during camp that someone would separate thems enough to be the clear starter that we feel like that's occurred so we'll have a starting quarterback Saturday night and expecting good things so did that separation create where that quarterback will be the only guy that's playing on Saturday um I'm not going to say that either cuz I again I want just don't want to give away any competitive advantages they are both good players and it was a good competition and took some time for there to be some separation but feel like we got what we were looking for and I think everybody on this team watched it happen can give Southern Illinois any competitive Advantage no the Salukis were going to keep them in the dark it's Southern illino eron like I I I love A-Rod don't get me wrong a-rod's great and I understand what he's doing but come on Southern Illinois and I look you keep it to yourself that's fine that totally within your right but this Cloak and Dagger thing just cracks me up I'm still trying to figure out like the depth of of not naming it not going with it and truly understand I like your by the way I like your theory on this in terms of you think it's rlof because they're keeping it quiet well and if it was bohannan they'd make a bigger deal out of it that's how I feel I've I've kind of felt that way for the last week and a half that if it was bannan it would be a pretty big announcement yeah of a returning Big 12 Champion quarterback and and then there's another part of me that's wondering if there's other aspects that they're waiting on you know you you can leave a team in mystery and that's your prerogative and like I said Scotty if if it's My Prerogative and then I don't really care what some buffoon on air I age I I agree or what some writer says it be Bobby Brown that's his prerogative yeah like if if if I if I feel like I can manipulate or change somebody's thought process or anything with it then I hold it because I can yeah and screw you no screw the media screw the fans yeah you don't need to know and that's to like I'm not blaming him I just think it's funny yeah like I just think like the the amount of weirdness that coaches have and how neurotic they are and when you step take a step back like if if if the difference between beating or losing to Southern Illinois is you keeping your quarterback Under Wraps then you got bigger problems than than uh than than a quarterback controversy I also wonder if there's some dynamics of the competition that is still going on in the quarterback room that they just want to continue to allow to play out in private and not in public yeah I also wonder if like as of yesterday if there was still something that could have changed and you leave that possible change as an opening for you without having any egg on your face but now that you've come out and said hey it's a clear-cut starter we know which way we're going then I don't know what the downside of announcing that would be I will put myself in whoever that is which by the way they have clamped down and and good for them that's fine like you know that I know those guys and you know I've got I typically have some good information they've clamped down and that's that's absolutely fine that is again their prerogative and so I don't have the information on it um but I if I were to put my myself in the shoes of the quarterback that has now separated himself I would be like let's go ahead and announce it yeah I want I want everybody to know I'm the guy I would really want it to be announced yeah I mean I think you could say hey Southern Illinois here's the first 10 plays we're going to run and these are the quarterbacks and this is the Personnel Group and this is where we're going to run and you still won't be able to stop it because we're BYU and you're Southern Illinois right there's options based off of it so no matter what you do we're going to find our our plug and play and you're going to struggle with it yeah yep but if you were the quarterback wouldn't you oh yeah I want is that selfish maybe we're more selfish than no like typical division one athlete I mean let's okay let's just make it personal here when BYU introduced you as the new color analyst didn't you think it was cool that they made a big deal out of it and they did the publicity and the press release and all that stuff yeah it was a really cool moment they didn't have it like hey h just you know what here's the thing you know you know just show up on Saturday and crack on the mic and we'll go it's like no like like I've worked hard I've earned this and I want I want to make a big deal out of this I got a call from my mom and dad and yeah you know you get to get your aunt uncle or family members or friends like Carlos and Scotty and Sean all my my boys they all called oh my gosh this release is awesome yeah and you get to swim in it for a minute yeah it's like this is this is awesome this is kind of a life accomplishment and I'm very proud of it I I don't want like whoever it is maybe they don't give two craps maybe I am way selfish and a little conceited and maybe I do want to swim in the the the Public's appreciation of me more than others but man if it was me like Pub me up yeah absolutely and guess what I walk a little taller my shoulders are a little broader I've got more responsibility because now the public expects a lot but again it's your prerogative It's it's Aaron rodri's decision to make if he wants to keep it close to the vest he can do it and I'm just telling everybody right now he has kept that this entire program has kept this one extremely tight yeah now all indications based off of what I said I still feel like they would be like big 12 Champion quarterback returns to BYU grabs the starting role and returns to prominence I just feel like the way it plays out I'm expecting Jake but I don't know yeah hands in Scotty 975 the KSL Sport Zone Mike Sanford's going to join us next we'll talk really excited for Utah to kick things off tonight I'm excited to see them play some clean veteran football that's what I'm expecting from them clean veteran football no turnovers no dumb mistakes you don't need to take chances if you're cam Rising don't take chances if you're defensive ends don't take chances just hold contain yeah go on the rush pin the ears back on third Downs make sure that you spot your your moments and go get your moments but don't don't take crazy chances that put you in bad spots you know what I mean Scotty that give you up big plays and crazy momentum moments don't don't do that stuff just play good clean football joining us now making the transition from coach to Media member it is Mike Sanford kind enough to carve out a few moments for us coach how are you hey coach hey how we doing fellas I tell you Scotty getting to know you at Logan Utah you were you an inspiration to me to jump into this world so here I am that's so cool I should have led you another direction does it I mean how does it does it feel weird you know uh it's you know late August early September to not be crazy butterflies going through camp and going through game prep and fine last second things to try to get ready for an upcoming opponent you know it does a little bit and it also does so last year I took I also didn't coach uh but I did Coach High School football as a a volunteer uh Wing back coach at me High School here in the Colorado uh Denver Metro for Jason clatt who's the older brother of Joel clatt and I I kind of got those butterflies and all that stuff this year I haven't had the time I've been covering the Denver Broncos so closely um with altitude Sports down here in in Denver and so as a result of that I haven't gotten that kind of that butterfly feeling until last night like I could not sleep last night it was just built into me 18 years as a college coach five as a player boy State man you just get those butterflies you know when it's it's football season time and I had that in full effect last night just to kind of set the stage so everybody is familiar with you and and where you come from and where you're headed Mike sford is one of the best out there and he is the son of the Legend Mike sford Senor who's one of the best Minds football Minds that you'll find out there as you mentioned played your years at boisey State and then you've coached all across the West UNLV I know you were at Stanford for a bit um obviously back at boisey State and then got familiar with Scotty at Utah State I know that you finished things out at Colorado and and what' you do Mike you're just there as the coach and you got the inim head coaching job and then you just decided Well I'm I'm gonna stay is that how you ended up just hunkering down there in Colorado yeah you know so uh coach Prime Deion Sanders comes in as uh you know as as the new head coach and uh similar to a lot of the players on that team a lot of those players ended up in the portal so did US coaches um and so that was the reality of of my situation and um you know I I I had been on a three-year contract that was just there for one year um so you got you can obviously do the math there um that you know I I hadn't had a chance to be a dad I had had a chance to really be a um you know coach my kids and use Sports and so you know I I didn't know what I was going to do next um I've had opportunities to coach uh at the power five level in the mountain wests in the last year and to be honest I just I I'm really finding a lot of passion and also the balance of life that I've probably been wanting to have um you know now that I have kids that are you know a daughter in high school and two that are youngsters uh it's just been really fun for me to to do stuff with football and be analyst um I'll be doing my first color commentary gig for altitude TV uh for CSU um in two of their games so I'm really looking forward to just all the different avenues that media um offers me to stay in touch with a great game that I love coaching so coach we were uh just playing some comments from Aaron rodri who's got a quarterback battle at uh that they finally settled in on but he's decided not to make it official and or not to uh announce it which is totally fine and that that's his right as a as a coach to not disclose that until the game starts but you've coached that position for a long time at the Collegiate level at the highest at Notre Dame and and all over the country how difficult is that as an OC to settle in when you got two guys that are going back and forth and they're both just you know letting it rip and practice and they're neck and neck how agonizing are those decisions as a coach yeah they're tough and the irony of of it is actually my wife and and my two youngest boys are are uh making the drive I25 and then 80 West to go to the opener for the cougs my my brother-in-law my wife's younger brother is a a-rod's assistant he's the assistant quarterback coach there um so I I do have inside information but I'm not gonna share that on air because I respect the process um but you know it is challenging it's it's hard especially when you know you have two really good options that are experienced starting quarterbacks in power five football you know between Jak redoff and and Gary bannan I mean Gary bannan was a was a really exciting player to watch uh you know in at Baylor before the injury bug kind of kind of bid him a little bit and um by all accounts had a very good training camp and you know it's been a very spirited competition from everything I've heard um and when it is that close um you do kind of look for that knockout punch um you know is it g to be a full week of practice where one guy has the upper hand um and and based off everything I've heard that that has been the case um and so a lot of times it's not as hard to communicate that because you these players are very self-aware they see the great sheets you know after scrimmages after every practice and they understand who's performing at a higher level so uh I think it's going to end up being really good that you have two experience starters for BYU going into a very important year for uh for that staff and I'm I'm gonna try to make my way up to a game as well coach is there an advantage that you can gain by not announcing at this point I ironically I was a part as an athlete at Boise State 2004 I was in a very spirited head-to-head competition with Jared zansky I was a fifth year senior zansky was a sophomore and there really wasn't a knockout punch in that competition and um they told us both uh that Jared Z bransky got the starting job um a week before the opening game against the Idaho vandals um but they didn't announce it publicly until the the like actually when there was uh the the starting lineup introduced at Broncos stadium at the time um and so it was tough I mean I my my now wife was there she's in the crowd you know in tears I me it's not an easy thing to deal with but um you know you do understand it as an athlete uh and and I think it's gonna be from an advantage standpoint uh you're you're preparing for two different types of players I mean that if you go back and study Gary bannan's tape particularly from Baylor you know when he was at his best you know you see a highly mobile player uh smart with football you know and then Jake redo is is a guy that you know has a lot of big Talent Big Arm Talent um but needs to needs to have consistent decision making over the course of an entire football game can have that one or two like boneheaded decision um for for BYU to play at a competitive level so there are two different levels of uh you know preparation that would go into it for Southern Illinois and um I'm anxious to see how it all plays out Mike Sanford joining us right here on 975 the KSL Sports Zone uh Utah comes in with a lot of high expectations coach and certainly it's welld deserved Kyle winningham's had that program rolling but this team seems like it's a it's at a bit of a different level in terms of talent returning uh and with the added increase of access to the college football playoff is it fair to talk about this team in terms of a team that could be a playoff team well I think it wouldn't be fair to to Omit them from from being the no-brainer in the Big 12 in my opinion you know this is a this is a program that came into the Pack 12 with fairly low you know at the time the pack 10 and all they did was Corner the market of physicality in the pack 10 now the Pack 12 and now the pack two I guess um but you know it's just a it's a program with with Cam Rising returning um you know the the weapons that that he'll have available on the perimeter and that'll be tapped into way more than the 23 edition of the youths and you know the defensive front you know the offensive line uh when you have continuity a program like w has had and like you've had you know with your offensive coordinator your your o line coach uh you know defensive staff that is such a benefit that is that's almost like a cheat code in this current model of college football that seems so transient and I think that's a big reason why Utah's been so dominant I I expect Utah to not just win this conference but I think they're going to win going away uh and to not even expect that I think is under selling what Utah has coming back coach I know that you're based in and doing a lot of work there in Colorado and obviously very familiar with that Buffalo program having been the interim head coach and and coached there in other capacities it's just been one storyline after the other we just recently had one with a former Utah player that was an assistant coach on that staff that left left because of differences with nil funding and Trevor Riley and you know we we're watching Warren Sap send out all of these pictures is he's parading around with the pro prog and you know all of the things that Warren Sap brings with him which are very interesting and we just have seen all these aspects of this thing what is it going to end up being I mean is this going to be a team that you can be proud of is this a team that colado fans are going to love or is this a team that's grabbed more hype than it should and probably is going to be a let down well it's such an interesting discussion because the reality of hiring coach Prime Deion Sanders as your head coach is that you understand that this is this has been his life his life has been on full display he is a he is a marketing and attention generating machine and so with that you know comes story lines like this but you know I do think that the in in the current landscape of the portal of nil died as a superpower that Deion Sanders possesses and that Colorado now has on their side all the different off season storylines all the things that happened with the local media here between coach Prime and Sean Keeler and different members of the media in Colorado at the end of the day it's not going to go out on the field and that's I'm excited about tonight uh to watch what really the game of football is about it's about those 11 find out you know this has been a program that has not allowed much access since coach Prime's been there uh we just interviewed the beat Rider Brian how from the Colorado Boulder Daily Camera and he he's only been to one practice you know so he doesn't know what to expect wow and I was asking about the depth chart they haven't released a chart um I asked him if there's a tight end in the offense he he he basically rattled off several guys that he doesn't know anything about hasn't seen him um you know so that's my question as a team that uh was GNA commit to running the football that's challenging to do if you don't have a tight end in offense the only way you could do it is you have to commit to having the quarter and I don't see that that's going to be the path forward for Shor Sanders with all it stake with his draft status and and everything that comes after the season so you know when you guys watch the game tonight CU versus North Dakota State you guys are going to find out what everybody here in the local media is finding out we don't we don't know what to expect wow well and and let's be honest I mean you know the landscape of college football North Dakota is more than capable of going in there and putting it on them yeah do you realize that north Cara State's I think five and one in their last six games against Power five Now power 14 so this is going to be a really interesting game the CU haters and the Dion ha and the CU lovers and the Dion lovers are going to watch every single bit of this game tonight I think that the the eyeballs are fixated on on fulson field tonight probably a lot more than Minnesota and North Carolina I want to get your thoughts now as you've been a coach and now flipped over and doing some of the work on the media side of things just your thoughts on Deion Sanders shutting down one of the reporters unable to ask him questions and and how that was handled well you know the thing that that came about from The Denver Post you know talking about that shutdown is that they went into the public records contracts of both coach Prime and his predecessors as the head coaches at CU and he does have a clause uh that CU agreed to and that Clause is that um he he is to you know his obligation as a head coach is to consistently and professionally meet with and then this is where his Clause is different than every other pre uh preexisting coach at CU with every mutually agreed upon member of the media um and so because CU essentially gave that power of contractually to coach Prime you know he he didn't do anything wrong I mean he's he he's fulfilling his contractual obligation relative to the the deal at CU plac now is that healthy for uh first amendment of America well I think we could have a lot of conversations about that um and so you know it's a really interesting storyline frankly is a a former interim head coach at CU I kind of stay out of my opinion on that but those are the facts you know Deon standards does not have to meet contractually with members of the media unless they're mutually agreed upon well coach we appreciate your time always good catching up uh enjoy sitting on your couch and watching games that's got to be an interesting perspective last year and going into this year as well but uh looking forward to uh catching up with you again throughout the season well I appreciate you guys and I'd be remissed if I didn't mention I was at all 18 open practices for the Denver Broncos and the youths have made a massive impact on that roster uh particularly Jonah Ellis and Devon Bailey those are two of my favorite players watching every single day those guys are going to end up starting football games this fall we're going to need to get you back on before we kick off that season Scotty's a big Broncos guy and and is always paying attention to the information Lloyd and I are we're Raiders fans to the to the core well Lloyd is I I just kind of tag along with him because I'm trying to find something to hold on to but we'll get you on before that kickoff and really get some insight there from coach because obviously we're we're all fascinated by the Zach Wilson story oh that too yeah everybody from the state of Utah played it one of the programs has had a really good training camp which is really neat a awesome thanks coach appreciate it appreciate there he is Mike Sanford it's got to be weird making that transition from Media or from coach to mediaon is not contractually obligated to even meet with any of them I guess not is that that's what Mich said yeah yeah because that is really unique to most coaching contracts is it not I mean you know that that more than me but yep that is uh that is highly highly unusual unusual yeah H in Scotty 975 the KSL Sport Zone what you may have missed coming up next and then it'll be your U preview show counting you down to Utah and southern Utah tonight it's all right here on 975 the ekl Sports Zone this is this is DJ and PK right now by royaly Jensen college football expert if you were offered the Utes or the field in the Big 12 who would you take I would take the Utes I think they have a tough one right away at Oklahoma State and this could be perception I know that the Big 12 is a step up clearly from the Mountain West or from any of the group of five conferences but it's not a step up from the Pack 12 and the way that the University of Utah plays is not typical Pack 12 football this is power football the Pack 12 the Big 12 I don't get the impression that they're the real physical teams and I think there's going to be teams in this conference that really have some difficulty with the power the defense and the physicality of the University of Utah football catch DJ and PK mornings from 6 to 10 on 975 the KSL Sports Zone your home for the best college football coverage in Utah is on the KSL Sports s the Cougars kick off the 2024 season with a home battle against Southern Illinois your home for the best coverage of cougar football is right here on 975 the KSL Sports Zone this is H ssen and Scotty gen presented by Mountainland Supply on 975 the KSL Sports Zone I'm soy hands and Scotty 975 the KSL Sports Zone hope you're all having a great Friday or excuse me it feels like Friday it's Thursday tomorrow will be Friday and we'll be breaking down some college football which H is very excited about breaking down a little Utah and Southern Utah we're ready to get this thing going I am so excited about it I'm excited about our next guests too Frank Dolce will join us coming up for the next two hours in fact uh Frank if you want to jump on really quick for a second here because this is a quarterback related comment how was the N the NFL so brutal so so jiren Hall was he played really well for Minnesota like jiren Hall was yeah no you don't need to tap it mik check yeah you're good mik check okay okay we're good here we go I'm here another year that may have been the perfect start to this year Jaren Hall's a really good quarterback and Jaren Hall had some really good preseason stuff and Minnesota's like ah not good enough let's bring in that old washed up boy of State guy that was the son of a guy that Co Miner played for many many years well he was Mark rippen yeah he was Mark rippen's son I think it his nephew oh is it his nephew yeah it's his nephew yeah in direct blood but they they decide they're gonna just let go of jiren Hall and bring in rippen and it's like it's just a brutal the NFL is so brutal for quarterbacks Tyler Huntley got released too today I have thoughts on all of those things if you'd like to know that's well well I mean we're not bringing you on the radio for your pretty face you know it's all folks spoken like my mother yeah anyways actually jar Hall good night everybody best thing that could have happened to him why what to be released from the Vikings well you got you have to be somewhere where they recognize the talent and that that wasn't the case at with the Vikings yeah and I think he's talented I think he can play somewhere it's not with the Vikings okay so he's he's he's swimming Upstream like go find a better place to be I think that's I think that's helpful for him there's really only 64 spots in that League I know he could yeah Zack Wilson playing with the New York Jets I mean and now he's in a I think he's in a better spot even though yeah the the draft and everything else it's not wored out but he's in a he's in a healthier situation for sure for sure and I think this lead to a long-term career for Zach Wilson if Zack Wilson plays a couple more years in New York and same result he's not going anywhere like that's it he's done he's Sanchez he's he's he's Sanchez he's sitting down he gets knocked over by the guard who's making a block or whatever and then we never see him in but but I didn't feel that way with jiren in Minnesota I I thought Minnesota would be a little bit better of a fit but you don't feel the same no I it's not that I don't feel the same you're saying Minnesota doesn't feel the same all right well obviously if they're bringing a riping I didn't know Tyler Huntley got cut yeah Tyler Huntley got released earlier today which is probably more surprising to me than QB Tyler Huntley yeah what did you say Pro Bowl quarterback Tyler Huntley Tyler Huntley I think maximized his talent in and his run in the NFL I think he maximized his opportunity in the NFL what's he been there five years yeah I was not necessarily a believer in Tyler Huntley coming out of college being able to land on an NFL roster in fact I think on lots of NFL rosters that he doesn't have a yeah fiveyear career five six year care he was Landing in Baltimore with Lamar Jackson was very beneficial for him very beneficial and so I was extremely impressed with what Tyler Huntley accomplished and maybe he has a little bit more to to go in in the NFL so I would say like for Tyler Huntley that's a great unbelievable to me success story to me he's playing on house money cuz I agree with you on that one yeah yeah so and and he totally proved me wrong could Tyler Huntley make some type of positional change like we've seen Tamm Hill do or because he's such a crazy athlete he could he transition to receiver could he transition to I mean he's only 61 so it's yeah that'd be tough I don't think so he transition to safety could he I think he still only weighs 185 pounds doesn't he yeah well he was I think he was 210 or so when he was Utah I mean you got to admit the guy is a wild athlete well yeah that's that's the Reon I think his athleticism is off the charts and that's why he he made a team and he was successful hey I don't see I don't see him transitioning over to another position like how and why did it come to an end with Baltimore for him does anybody remember I don't remember he was the perfect backup in that offense I agree and I think he may have left in free agency and went to Cleveland yeah all right hen Scotty your you preview show kicks off next with the legend Frank Dolce next 975 the DSL Sports Zone your home for the best college football coverage in Utah is on the KSL Sports song It's a season opening home game for the agies as they welcome Robert Morris to Maverick Stadium your home for all the play-by-play coverage of Aggie football is right here on 975 the KSL Sports Zone this is H sson and Scotty G presented by Mountainland Supply on 9 75 the KSL Sports [Music] Z everybody was disappointed last year we use that as motivation during the offseason to you get bigger stronger more durable you know which comes with that and looking forward to being the team that we know we can be last year we were off the pace and had some things to overcome but that's not that uncommon in college football I mean you know you go through years where you're not as fortunate injury wise as other and there something you got to to deal with but but right now we're in a good place and if we can continue to keep the quarterback upright for the course of the Season then that's going to be a big plus for us going to be a big factor at corner I believe before the season's over he had a setback during the summer conditioning he's the player I was talking about during summer Player Development he scheduled to join us in practice very shortly as in next week and start to get uh back into the mix and so that's something that uh we're looking forward to cuz he's a good player yeah I feel good run out there feel fast feel strong and just happy to be back out there and the team feels good and just waiting to play Southern Utah on [Music] Thursday hands in Scotty 975 the KSL Sports Zone it is your youth preview show let's get it folks Frank Dolce is hanging out with us hi Frank how are you hey hey Scotty missed you I'm here too missed you more I'm I'm over here behind the computer screen yeah I'm I'm going you know hey Scotty yeah great to see you can't wait to hear your call on the agie games see you up you're up there on Saturday right yeah I'll be up there Saturday yep cool that should be fun and Jimmy no h wait name hasn't changed i h and I I get to watch H be a dad at uh Lehi High School football games and it's terrifying he's got that he's got that iPhone out rock made a a decent Decent Block on a play but it wasn't up to the Olsen standard and hands now Rock's probably around the 25 30 yard line H is standing behind the goalpost with me and I'm calling the game and all you hear in the background is Drive Drive Rock isn't even looking but turns around and gives him a knot like he knows he's you know Dad's chatting which I thought was really nice like I thought that demonstrated you know a nice kind of relationship between Father and Son it's actually this has been a the first year I've kind of enjoyed being at the football games yeah and because I mean Scotty you followed this all along like literally sucks oh yeah yep it literally would the kids suck I hated it it's horrible uh I'm with you on that is that all levels of sport Little League baseball football socc I've only experienced football and it sucks it's miserable yeah and then seventh the league sucks the talent sucks the coaching sucks like everything sucks everything was terrible and then you know freshman year like I'm watching my son organization sucks like with my son the fees oh really suck those are and you get nothing for what you pay for zero like I knew how my development went and it just takes a long time for a big body to develop so I'm like I'm just gonna you know freshman year sophomore year Junior and finally this is all clicking and it's like there it is is and it's been one of the biggest joys of my life I watching these first couple games he's a proud papa on the side no no this is this has been fun to watch from from my perspective just being a little bit along for the ride with you and rock it's been really cool and you've seen the gear shift and it's so fun to see it because now it's like watching a duck walk into water and just perfectly smooth and it's going well and it's like that's what it's supposed to be yeah that's it just takes a minute like sometimes it some kids never get it like you're fortunate some kids never catch on to it something that doesn't click it doesn't click even you know big athletic people it just doesn't click out and so but but Rock has it like there's some kids you know that grew up that you know for instance Scotty is a football family and football history and he's got a couple kids that they aren't about football he's got one that's all about football yep and is going to do great things in football but you know it's also interesting because you could watch your kid and be like you you don't like this game like I don't know how it would be if I had a 6' s kid in my house eating all my food and he's like Dad where's my trombone and I'm like hey dude I don't know I don't know where that is but I don't know I'll be there to watch it because I'd watch him play in the van I absolutely would sure you would I'd watch and love it sure absolutely I grew up very cultured M oh no don't me Scotty you know my operatic background dude knows his Opera yeah well wait is it you who knows your opera or a family member who knows well I mean Ryan was the opera singer but but he went to allend that's guil by association he knows uh guilty mouse or what is it mouse deflator deflator mouse yeah deflator Mouse by the way Amanda this Amanda's done such oh you're talking about my clogging yeah when he dirt Amanda's done such a great job with rock dirt I'll tell you why because I they came off the field they scored Lehi scored and they came off the field rock went right over to his spot on the bench where all the offensive line gathers and the coaches come over and so I walked over there and I just wanted to you know give him a little dap and yeah yeah he stood up Get Off the Bench when I walked over and gave me a hug was very very thoughtful Amanda's done a terrific job him I I hate to give you like any credit or any love at all but that kid loves you that's my guyes we have history I mean we've watched games together at the Olen household we've been in the studio together like many many years that's my guy yeah well Frank it's a big game tonight obviously University of Utah is it's the season opener that makes it AED and it is ready to go what what what are some of the biggest story lines you've kind of followed through Camp oh it there's there's two big story lines of course two big story lines cam Rising Health maybe three I'm going to add another one cam Rising health and whether or not he's going to be able to remain healthy throughout this football season and this is nothing I I'm not saying anything negative about cam Rising but he's not finished a season healthy I think that goes back to his days at Texas as well he's not finished a season healthy so he's not finished through a whole season healthy yeah yeah no I think that's true whether it's the last game of the year or the first game of the year yes that's I believe that's true yeah so there's a history and and and Utah offensively is reliant on cam Rising staying healthy if they want to accomplish all their goals but I really don't think that's the I mean that's significant I think there's to me there's a more significant piece and then quarterback yeah nobody wants to talk about it okay and I've tried to talk about it all right talk away it's your mic and it's your two hours where's where's Zach moss in this offense where where is he doesn't exist he doesn't exist you watch Money Ball yeah they're going to create Zach Moss with the aggregate of Jaylen good luck Jaylen Glover Maki mcki Bernard and uh who's the kid everybody's all fired up about Mitchell Mike Mitchell well the to me that's the biggest question mark about this offense and that's very fair I don't think it's bigger than quarterback but whether or not they're going to be able to produce a running game well okay in in cam rising's history with his ability to run at the University of Utah and the running support that he's had those his success is very much aligned with a defense that has to pay attention to the Run game fair okay I see your point now if if a defense doesn't have to pay attention to the Run game that makes cam rising's job much more difficult I and and to me that's the way this Utah off that's the foundation of the Utah offense so but they're not they're not chop liver running the game football though I mean they're not horrible I mean McKai Bernard's good Jaylen Glover's okay like they're not I mean yeah I get it there's not they're not Zach Moss but it's not like they're you know some Joe schmuckatelli back there I mean it is a decent running attack we'll see you're really that think we'll see I'm not down on it I just am I'm I'm a wait and see and and we've been through football seasons with Utah where three four games in they're still trying to figure out which guy and all of a sudden it's there's the guy I mean and I wouldn't be surprised if that that happened I don't think we'll find that out tonight I guess to your point and you know I you can't you kind of forget Soni vaki probably doesn't do what sonaki did if they had good running backs so I get your point I see what you're saying that was out of necessity that was out of necessity yeah but he was such a beautiful bright spot wasn't he he was good in a in a season that they had to piece together and this dude shows up I forgot jaquin and Jackson had 800 yards last year too I was really hopeful for Quin I thought jqu and Jackson was going to be the guy and then he couldn't stay healthy hey what if either one of you heard about Anthony Woods Scotty we were talking about him early the Idaho Transfer that he had 12200 yards and like 20 touchdowns last year now look I'm gonna I'll I'll be perfectly honest I have not watched him outside of the Highlight packages that have been put together but I have a lot of friends that work in the Big Sky offices that are around Big Sky football and they absolutely love that guy but he's beat up isn't he yes he's injured yeah it's an injury issue with Woods okay and I think there's a lot of optimism about him eventually but but there's injuries yeah yeah well I'm sure that they are going to get the usage and I'm sure a lot of it has to do with who's moving who up front MH but for some reason I'm not overly concerned about the running back position because when is the last time that we got done with a year and looked back and said oh that run game was miserable wait wasn't that last year well I kind of felt like vaky was a weapon and jinon was a weapon as much as I'd like to argue with Frank here and I like arguing with Frank yeah but Frank may have hit on something here because in 2021 um Utah runs for 3,000 yards as a team in 2022 they run for 3,000 yard 3,47 yards last year only 2,300 yards as a team and last year's win loss record as opposed to the other two years when they went to a Pack 12 Championship you know last year they were you know what was their record last year eight five eight and5 so you go from a 3,000 yard season when you're a Pack 12 title in 21 another pack 12 title in 22 when you're 10 and four and both of those are 3,000 yard seasons on the ground you drop it all the way way down to 2300 and you're 8 and5 and outside on the outside looking in in terms of a Pack 12 Championship well it's I mean it it's certainly a difference and you know there was a a there were moments of decline but there were also moments that looked good in the running game I didn't come out of that year thinking boy that was the worst year running I've ever seen I I thought I didn't think I didn't think so either until I looked at the stats I thought in most instan is that Utah was lacking in the Run game and and Bryson Barnes could have used some of that support now you know Barnes teams could load up teams did load up against the Run game defensively because they said what's what you know what's going to hurt us most is it you passing game without keithy and and with Barnes at quarterback or is it Utah's ability to run the football they said it's Utah's ability to run the football if Utah can run the football Utah wins so we're going to take that away and we're g to have to live with whether or not Bryson Barnes is successful the passing game successful I do think Big 12 teams are going to have more capabilities to take it away than Pack 12 teams did take away the Run yeah yeah I think they're going to they're going to see more physical fronts and more capable defenses in in run support because that's what it is in this league yeah and in the Pack 12 it's it's throw it's a lot of passing which brings me to the third question about this offense hold that thought and that is we'll find out next hands and Scotty we'll continue on with your youth preview show next 975 the KSL Sports Zone we go it's game week for the agies and the zone is getting you ready for kickoff Utah state will kick off the 2024 season with a battle at Maverick Stadium against Robert Morris listen all week long for the best coverage of Aggie football and your chance to win tickets to the game that catch all the play-by-play action beginning with the agie pregame show this Saturday at 5 on 1280 The Utah is on the KSL Sports s it's a Thursday night opener for the youths as they welcome in southern Utah to Rice eckle Stadium your home for the best coverage of Utah football is right here on 975 the KSL Sports Zone this is H ssen and Scotty G presented by Mountain land Supply on 975 the KSL Sports [Music] Zone Hansen Scotty 975 the KSL sport Zone Frank Dolce had a tremendous tease and we're going to get to that here in a minute but hands it all comes down to this it started in late March early April we sat in Lloyd's office on a whiteboard yelled at each other as we put our names together and then it moved into coach's offices we went and long conversations coaches we talked to and then we sent out our ballots to all the media members and then the coach that you interviewed got let go so you had to get a interview a new coach and we buried a bunch of audio wait why why are we gonna talk about that today uh no this is called the you preview show I sure hope Utah fans tune in to Frank Dolce for Utah football yep Utah fans have a broad set of interests including absolutely what happened to it's very true yeah but anyways and then in early June we are we is that a thumbs up or no no it means that Lloyd is not quite ready yet I mean you tease the segment as I was driving in an hour ago this segment was coming up like not foryd I mean we caught him flat footed we're announcing number two and number one the culmination we caught him flat footed yeah of our 60 and 60 just keep he's doing like this Phil Phil he's he's ready Phil so it started in early June with number 60 and now we come to number two and number one here it is your final two selections you know who the players are you just don't know what the order is well here we go what began in early June ends today the two best players in the state of Utah and two players that will rely on each other to have a great season in 2024 our next selection sat out the 2023 season due to injury but now that he's back and fully healthy he should once again dominate in 2024 at number two from the University of Utah 6'2 236 lb tight end brand keithy rising down the middle clock touchdown and that's number 80 again they are feeding the ball BR ke the first points of the night brand keithy great to have him back was missed dearly last year much like cam Rising was but he is 100% right right now and should be a guy that provides a lot of production for this football team and now it's time for number one the best player in the state of Utah has voted on by the local sports media and you the fans for the first time in the 10-year history of the 60 and 60 a player has earned the number one spot three years in a row and while UT fans are waiting to see how this player returns from injury no one doubts the impact he'll have on the Utah offense in 2024 as the ukes look to become one of the best teams in all of college football coming in at number one from the University of Utah 6'2 220lb quarterback cam rising Rising up the middle in cam Rising first of all proud to have him as the number one player in the state of your 60 top players very welld deserving for cam I believe this is his third time in that position means so much to this football team he is the leader of our team we missed him tremendously last year that is probably the biggest Plus for our football team going into this season is that cam is healthy and ready to go this has been your top 60 and 60 presented by five-star painting on 975 the KSL Sports Zone there you go folks number two Brand keithy number one cam Rising for the third consecutive year L Lele had two years where he was number one mhm um but uh Here Comes cam with three years in a row named the number one player in the state of Utah hey I we we'll jump into the conversation of number one and number two but I do want to take a quick second here because listen to K Whittingham and the sound it just reminds me you know we sit down with these coaches for an hour and a half yeah and they go through the players and we go through the sound and we record the spots and we talk about all of it and then go over to and colani takes his time I was with colani for about an hour and 45 minutes and they take a lot of time to do this yes and it it is and this was our 10th year doing it yep so colani has done it nine this was his ninth time Bronco did it once yep Kyle has done it 10 times with me and you've had I had uh Matt Wells then I had Blake Anderson Gary and Gary Anderson and even Nate drying had a few that we worked in late after they made the move a coach but I want to say to the coaches we are so lucky Scotty to have the coaches we got in this state because we could very easily have a coach go screw you well yeah I don't want to have any part to do with this you know these guys understand that you and I talk for three hours a day and it's our job to have opinions yeah and and they know that our opinions don't always align with how they feel and yeah we we don't want to get personal with them but if the product doesn't look good we talk about the product not looking good and so these coaches they go through a gambut of emotions and they're not Deon sander us they're not saying hey look he I'm not going to spend an hour with you they're excited to talk about these players and they sit down and they give us this great info and we really do appreciate it because to get that those thoughts on Brank keithy and cam rising from KY Whittingham and what those guys mean it's that I think that's a huge part of what we do with this abs and by the way uh not only do we want to thank the coaches we want to thank Adam and the crew over at festar painting too uh they've uh their second consecutive year being the title sponsor of the 60 and 60 and again just can't thank them enough Adam's one of our favorite dudes on the planet and remember when you need to refresh the inside or outside of your home with that five-star experience five-star painting is there for you they've got the time skills and tools fivestar painting.com that's fivestar painting.com they've done a ton of work for you they've done a ton of work for me as well full exterior on my absolutely love those dudes and uh whether again inside outside whether it's a small project or massive project they've got you covered at five star painting all right now the question is did the voters get it right uh I believe so Frank keithy at number two cam rising at number one uh Frank Lander Barton was number three I think your top three top four this year yeah but but I never get included because my top 60 is he tries to write in a bunch of people it never com it never you write in you can't write in no no my top 60 never goes outside of the University of Utah I just Tred and rank University of Utah football players as a top 60 see that's that's the issue with Ron McBride we give Ron the list of 60 and he gives us a list of 94 back yeah we're like how how did One Long Snapper hey hey coach it's the top 60 of the players in in Utah coach you've got 18 High School guys here yeah he has he has guys that played High School in in Utah but now are playing at UCLA and USC and Oregon and Washington like he just includes wait okay so he played in Utah it's the top 60 and 60 so okay here it fits yeah um cam Rising obviously Pack 12 championships um he's the doit all quarterback how much trust how much Faith do you got in him now coming back after a year off and and what you heard him explain of his knee going back a few months ago saying basically he gutted it mhm it was a full rip out a full tear out of the knee horrifying he took it down to the studs yeah took it down to the studs tell me where you're at with him yeah I I'm really curious about how that holds up and I don't think there's any doubt that he'll have some butterflies yeah stepping out on the field tonight maybe he hasn't had it like like this in a few years but uh it going through an offseason where you don't play going through a whole football season where you don't play and doctor saying well I think he's ready to like physically I think he could play the KN stable but couldn't find his way to that Comfort level to get onto the field Feld and and so now going through the whole offse all the rehab getting himself into a position to play I think we're all curious about how that unfolds and the the best thing about cam Rising is how he processes the game so everything that happens above the shoulders that is his greatest asset he fortunate that in his career he's had some significant athleticism to go along with that but let me just be honest you were GNA say Frank weren't you I was yeah but his his injuries have taken a toll yeah on him and so a guy that that uh probably had more Elite arm strength early in his career I think that's diminished a little bit not not to the point where it's a detriment to to him I think he's a great great college quarterback but probably doesn't have the elite arm strength that the next level would require uh I think the you know the knee injuries everything you know that's happened kind of leg sort of stuff all of that stuff has taken a toll on him and so for a you know a mid 20s body is probably more like you know 35 40y Old Well the pounding that he's taking I mean we saw we saw Brian Johnson in ' 08 put together a special season with a body that was held together with duct tape and that's where gun and that's where it ended that's where his career ended yeah but it ended in a hell of a run for sure spacular so so it it can be done but you're right I can't imagine there's not some collateral damage to his level of play based on all these injuries gone through I think you make an excellent point because based on his talent and ability and what he has around him this year it could end that same way in spectacular fashion for cam Rising yeah record setting history stpe type stuff University of Utah could be and and one of the things that he has going for him is one of the questions I have about this football team is your number two guy yeah brt keithy because Brandt Keith's coming off a significant injury and prior to that it was like Pathway to the NFL for brt key and it's almost like he has to prove himself all over again because of that injury that kept him out all of last year and you so so that's the question mark it Brant Keith's Health the interesting thing about it is Utah comes in I don't know if I believe this is true six deep at the tight end position group I mean as as much six deep as much as you can rail on the running back position the tight end position is locked and loaded yes and and that's the that's what I wanted to talk about because if there are concerns about the Run game and the ability for the Run game to manage the offense take some of the offense I think you can utilize I the tied end group to take some of that productivity not necessarily carrying the football although we've seen that in this Utah offense but getting two maybe even three tight ends on the field who create match matchup difficulty for a defense Che you who do you guard him with yeah hey Scotty the the last thing I'll say about this final announcement 60 and 60 it it is kind of a bizarre thing to have the number one and the number two players having not even put up a stat in 2023 I know that that is and the number three guy missing half the season half the season yeah it's a crazy 60 and 60 but that shows you why so many people believe in this Utah team yeah H and Scotty it's your Ute preview show Frank Dolce in studi we make our way towards kickoff it's Utah and Southern Utah coming up tonight right here on 975 the ekl Sports Zone this is this is DJ and PK joined right now by Roi Jensen college football expert if you were offered the youut or the field in the Big 12 who would you take I would take the youth I think they have a tough one right away at Oklahoma State and this could be perception I know that the Big 12 is a step up clearly from the Mountain West or from any of the group of five conferences but it's not a step up from the Pack 12 and the way that the University of Utah plays is not typical Pack 12 football this is power football the Pack 12 the Big 12 I don't get the impression that they're the real physical teams this is 975 the ekl Sports Zone it is your youth preview show Frank Dolce hanging out with us in studio will be with us all of next hour as well hey I do want to bring up miss the wings though I know about that what is the policy here don't worry about policy what because I can't bring in wings or a pizza we have to set it in the hallway so we just got to set it right here in the hall doesn't you know just set it right in the hallway in the oh so do you see where I'm pointing in the hallway yes I see the hallway yeah do you know what I think let me let me ask you guys a question everyone is allowed to participate in this including Lloyd do you think it's disrespectful to play BYU spotlights in the Ute preview show no it's necessary it's just a rejoin you are so sens is it is it disrespectful to play BYU highlights in the Ute preview show I'm just curious you are so sensitive we played you they're in the same conference now you rejoins in the cougar preview show yesterday yeah but Utah's playing today yeah yesterday we had the cougar preview show and the number three guy happened to be a Utah in our 60 and 60 and so we were talking about Utah in the cougar preview show so well I don't I'm not sure I understand your point but let me ask you this question is it disrespectful it's no it's not disrespectful called us doing business part of business Frank hey uh okay agree to disagree speaking of disrespect I was just kidding hey I did want to make this point because we were talking about cam Rising class of 2018 a tnder age of 25 25 years old yeah so where he going his mission 2018 he was supposed to graduate from college in 2018 is that what you're saying that feels that way but this is the great thing about nil and and I know people have given probably roughed up cam a little bit for the amount of money he's made but he otherwise he would not make a penny on this game because I I don't think he's an NFL guy yeah so I don't disagree so he had a chance to make well into the millions over the last three years where where otherwise he would have essentially been Frank you and I coming out of college football with nothing but a cigarette hanging out the corner of your mouth yeah but it looked cool unlit of course unlit yeah yeah wait but you said something I don't know that I agree with this you said this is the great thing about nil I yeah he was able to make money while for the individual when he could yeah it's the great thing for the individual this has completely changed the college landscape I don't know that I have yet found other than the compensation for the student athletes who are very quickly going to be simply athletes there's not going to be any student as part of that that's already in fact that's already been transitions into whatever the next thing is that's what nil has done and I so I'm as a college football fan I am not at I'm not a I don't align with the way that nil is being run currently I don't I don't disagree with you at all but I will also believe that because Cam said this and we've speculated on it before and then cam verified it is that he wouldn't be here for this season for sure if there was an nil he would have chased that NFL dream and Brant keithy is probably the same and there's lots of guys who fall into that category who realize that my earning potential is much higher here than it is chasing an NFL dream yeah so you do as a fan base sometimes able to squeeze an extra year or two out of some guys by the way that's why if there's any chance if there's any way to find eligibility in 2025 if he could do it that's why he does it he should do it yeah hell yeah what do you mean find eligibility there's no way he can find eligibility there's a rule actually that he might be able to get another GE wait what's the rule there's another little there's another little loophole identify as a senior again I identify as a college senior again yeah oh Frankie hands in Scotty it's all right here on 975 the EK KSL Sports Zone your home for the best college football coverage in Utah is on the KSL Sports song It's a season opening home game for the Aggies as they welcome Robert Morris to Maverick Stadium your home for all the play-by-play coverage of Aggie football is right here a 975 the KSL Sports Z this is H sson and Scotty CH presented by Mountainland Supply on 9775 the KSL Sports [Music] Z it is your preview show as Utah gets set to open up the season against Southern Utah coming up tonight Frank Dolce hanging out with us in studio Frank what's the mindset you have to have when you're playing a team that you should beat and beat fairly easily but you know you still got to do your job you know is like what are you know how do how do you make sure you're you know still dialed in or is that not even a problem when it's a season opener yeah I think that's a problem in fact I think if you look at uh Colorado in North Dakota coming up tonight that that could be a problem that could be a big problem yeah yes in fact I I I would not be surprised if there's a mild upset in that game I wouldn't even I mean it would yeah I would call that a mild upset not a huge upset no a mild upset yeah but execution is what you have to focus on in a game in this game game number one against a opponent that Utah should beat uh you have to make make sure that you're executing at a high level and efficient with the football and you know checking off so your substitutions you have to get your substitutions right you want to make sure that you're not being penalized regularly you want to be disciplined at the line of scrimmage no no no crazy fouls take advantage of opportunities so I if you look at these to if you look at this football game Utah should go out and win handily and have the opportunity to get other you know second third Team guys in the game to get some get some game experience unless you you over overl this situation and you're not executing at at a high level certainly Southern Utah is going to be excited about playing football well you you've called a bunch of Utah games and you've seen a bunch of Utah games where sometimes they don't play great coming out of these games like out of the you know and they end up winning and winning fairly easily but there's always been like Montana State or some of these teams where they have a slow start to them stupid three and out to start it hell I think that you want Utah to come out of this game with I ideally I don't think you're going to come out of this game and know things like who's the starting running back because Utah's going to be so dominant at the line of scrimmage like everyone's going to have a little success if that makes sense and you might look across the defensive side and say well you know yeah that's what I think coming out of this game you're you want to say yeah that's what they're supposed to do that's what this defense is supposed to do so I I don't know that you want to come out of this game with with question or or or saying you know things like uh well is is brt keithy really is he healthy I mean I don't you don't want that coming out of this game you want you want it to be like Bland like no news yeah coming out of this gamee right because their next stop is Utah State yeah and I think that there's a big question mark in Logan right now I think Logan could be really good I think Utah State could be fantastic I do I think they' got really good personal and I've played in that Stadium enough Frank you've played in that Stadium hav you oh yeah yeah absolutely that place can be really tough and Scotty my guess is that it's going to be a sellout oh oh yeah yeah no it's going to be hopping up there so Frank what do you need to get done to make sure you're ready to go to Logan yeah yeah I think it's that you you want to be able to go back on film after the game so I I think it should be you know uh four four touchdown victory for Utah and you want to be able to go back on film and and say you know like the offensive line graded out at 90 plus like efficient execution cam Rising made all the right calls at the line of scrimmage based on what the defense was doing presentent you didn't give up any chunk plays on the defensive side you held the all all of the stats you held them under a 100 yards rushing you got a couple turnovers you didn't give the ball away I mean it just yeah I I think it has to be this that that kind of Veteran subtleties yeah absolutely yeah absolutely you don't want to go back on the film this team is too old to be able to say oh well you gotta you gotta give Cam Rising a little bit of a break because he's just now seeing the speed of his safey crossover yeah why did you throw why did you throw that ball yeah like that that's a you should you shouldn't make that you shouldn't be make that play I'm interested to see some of the new guys like a singer like how he grades out of this game so he's going to get into action new offense for him is he going to be 90% efficient singer and Pitman excited for both I love Pitman like I think in the wide receiver group I'm very optimistic about singer yeah I think Pitman has a tremendous upside he could be amazing tremendous upside and so I think you want to see those guys and then money Parks has always shown this he's like kind of right on the verge he makes plays though he made that big play in the Pack 12 championship game he does he does so good so if that group comes out and and the coaching staff says okay you guys were like you ran the right you made the right adjustment you ran the right routes 90 plus percent of the time we're okay we can build on that for game number two how do you manage cam rising's hits well obviously there's not very little designed Run for the quarterback especially have do you even have a designed runs tonight no but for the season you kind of have to you have to have that you have to have that he has to keep the defense honest because that's one of his talents that's one of the things he does well and and so and then the other thing is I I'm going to say tonight but in in opportunity where you have where you can scramble to avoid pressure then it has to be pass first you get out of the pocket pass first pass first pass first take what you can get and then give yourself up like he he he can't find himself in a position where he's lowering his shoulder tonight to pick up a couple extra critical yards that Utah shouldn't be in that situation tonight yeah he's got to find the sideline and just get out of bounds and you know find himself back in the Huddle for the next it series it's not quite as bad Scotty as when Alex Smith was coming back to the NFL you remember when he was jumping back on the field and you and I talked about that for a couple days Le we were all excited and they were like oh wait should you really be doing this almost didn't want to see it yeah but then you see that first hit and you're like I remember the first hit Alex Smith took and I'm like oh no here we go and it was from uh from a big hitter too it was like a B yeah somebody like that yeah somebody that was ripping him in half and it was like oh no and he got up that there's I'm I've got a bit of a stomach butterflies kind of an anxiety waiting for cam rising's first big impact hit because he's a tough guy we've seen him get up from nasty hits but still there's a bit of that Frank that I'm anticipating seeing him take the hit and then how does he respond and how does the body respond and yeah it's hard to and it's hard to it's hard to dial a guy down whose whole career has been physical I mean it's all it's all fun and games to say you know don't do this but when it's third and three and he rolls out and he sees five yards and he's to go he's going to go and he's going to put his head down and he's going to try to get that first down yeah well that's the thing he can't do he just can't put his head down like I don't Utah should be able to survive tonight without him doing that I I agree I just just don't know if you can coach that out of it I don't know well Frank speaking of that how much Isaac Wilson do we see tonight if if the first half goes well you could see Isaac Wilson for the second half after the first drive in the second half yeah I think that usually there's one drive in the third I think he could he could come out and you'd see him in the second half like ific if the first half goes well do we see anything other than Isaac or because you got the hu kid you got Rose yeah you see something if you okay so here's or do you just say hey it's this and then it's this look if if I'm making a true freshman my number two I'm giving him all the Reps that I possibly can I I think the only reason I would see Isaac will okay so we're making a lot of assumptions but assuming Utah has a great first half the game is 35 nothing a half well well well in control yeah and then you give Cam Rising one more run at it okay here we go Isaac it's your game now the if Isaac goes out for three Series in the second half how many series are you going to have in the second half six okay so if he goes out for three series and it's like efficient High completion percentage making the right calls doesn't look phased by the speed of the game all all of those things if he looks very settled at that position I would say now we start thinking about hey let's give let's give our other guy a shot let's let's get him out there and give him a little experience uh in a in a in a scenario where it's it feels like it's more of a learning opportunity for Isaac meaning he can improve on a series after series after series I think that that you'd probably see him more regularly finish out the game gotcha um Southern Utah is obviously undermanned and um and will you know look they're going to lose this game but you get nervous about those one or two plays and I you imagine it'll be a similar situation to what you know Jim MOA told you when you put a hit on pton Manning in Camp if there's an offensive lineman who misses a blitz assignment and somebody comes up and has a clear hit on cam Rising I can't imagine that's going to go over very well that's going to be trouble that's going to be trouble yeah that's why you feel confident about this Old Line yeah I mean that that does give you a good feeling we have not talked a lot about Utah's offensive line not yet and it's on my list well let's we have a few minutes let's get to it you know speaking of the running back position we didn't cover this about the running back group and how they're listed currently one two three I a lot of that goes to which running back understands pass protection and and facilitates pass protection the best who gives who gives cam r the best opportunity to succeed in the passing game and so Mike Bernard may have separated himself in that particular area yeah and and so has earned that starting spot well we'll have to see how that goes but going back to the offensive line like that that to me is and you and I have talked about it hands a little bit I feel like there's great potential on the offensive line and I also felt like the offensive line a year ago did not perform up to the standard do you have a do you think differently no no I'm right there with you outside of Spencer funo was a staple and now you've moved Spencer over to the right side and the only reason Reon you do that well you do it for two reasons Spencer feels more comfortable at the right side and then the second reason is but you think you've got a beast in Caleb lomu so we're all gonna get our first experience of Caleb lomu together coming up tonight and out of all the hype that I've heard rolling in this Camp Caleb lomu has probably been the biggest hype of it all Caleb lomu is that red shirt freshman that has gotten multiple mentions he was instantly given the left tackle start I know like every everybody's projection is that he is going to be a world class left tackle so we're all going to see it together and if he looks like Spencer funo looked in that opener last year against Florida not Southern Utah no it was Florida and Spencer funo was locking dudes down if it looks anything like that even against Southern Utah I'm going to feel really good about it but outside of Caleb lomu you've got tanay who's going to be playing at the left guard position and it's like all right some new faces there's uh probably going to be some Growing Pains moments of growing pains but as far as do they have the Personnel yeah I think they've got the personnel and yeah I do think that there was some other achievement last year at certain points but I've got high hopes in in terms of your concern level of position groups running backs number one yes how far down do you have to get before you get to offensive line on the on the offensive side or no just overall in terms of worry yeah I mean I think I would put it uh running back is my biggest concern yeah and then I would go probably offensive line before safety next oh I'm just talking about the offensive side of theall no I'm talking about both sides okay okay offensive side of the ball I would go running back offensive line health of the quarterback wide receiver tight end I had the least concern about the tight end Group H brought up a good point the other day linebacker depth linebacker depth is it it worries me is an issue the the starting linebackers oh as good as anybody yeah I mean two big 12 guys that's a good all Big 12 guys that's a good group uh on in the on the defensive side levels of concern would be safety Corners linebacker depth and then there's no concern about the dline no I'm really concerned about the DNS this year at youah yeah said nobody hopefully they can make it through well listen we said that before the the start of the season last year the the injury bug that hit Utah a year ago is unprecedented yeah it hit All Phases of this football team we talk about Brett keithy and we talk about cam Rising as the injury bug but how about the running back group how about the defensive line how about the defensive front that got hit with the injuries in the front seven a year ago like it was it was nut so as it sits it's very very solid but here's the players that uh missed the season and Miss time Lander Barton these are these are season ending and we we don't talk enough about Chris Curry we talked about the Run game last year Lander Barton McKai Bernard Chris Curry Logan fono Brank keithy cam Rising Thomas ymi guys that Miss time Johnny MAA Connor OU simote Peppa Kenny Reid Smith Snowden Junior tuna van finger they all the all of your big points had multiple missed games multiple players missing the entire season so yeah Frank it was chronic yeah and what's crazy is this Camp has been very quiet and that has been very good and and BYU's Camp has been very quiet and very good Scotty I think Utah State's Camp's been very quiet very quiet yep and very good so I think that the you know just figuring out the management to make sure everybody's ready to go for the opener it's it's all been good yeah yeah well that's and to me that's a huge that's a huge issue with where Utah ended up a year ago and where they what their potential was the injury bug for Utah was overwhelming and Whittingham said that he made some adjustments I don't know how many adjustments he actually made but uh said we had a veteran team so we don't need to be quite as physical but let's be honest it's Kyle it was it was physical it was physical and and to be fair the success of the Utah football program under Kyle Winningham is built on a foundation of the physical nature of play you can't like he how far away is he going to stray from that yep yep that's the that's the formula hands and Scotty this is 975 the KSL Sports Zone when it comes to high school football KSL has you covered don't miss the Game Night Live game of the week the bigam miners travel South to face the leh high Pioneers in a 6A matchup stream the game online Friday on the KSL Sports app or listen to the KSL Sports Red Zone on Friday at 7 on 975 the KSL Sport Zone it's Game Night Live brought to you by you CCU love where you bang your home for the best college football coverage in Utah is on the KSL Sports s it's a Thursday night opener for the youths as they welcome in southern Utah to Rice eel Stadium your home for the best coverage of Utah football is right here on 975 the KSL Sports Zone this is H ssen and Scotty je presented by Mountainland Supply on 97 five the KSL Sports [Music] Z Hans and Scotty it's your youth preview show but more importantly it's Frank Dolce hanging out with us here in studio as Utah is just a few hours away from kicking off against Southern Utah the youths coming in is a 40o favorite that is not the biggest point spread at of a big 12 uh competition tonight Kansas is taking on Lindenwood what do we know about Lindenwood they're a high school absolutely nothing they're High School in lyndenwood Kansas well Kansas is a 49p point favorite against lynen wood I have never heard the word lyen yeah same what um you've never heard the word lynen wood no or the school I've never even heard I've heard lynon and I've heard I've heard wood I've just never heard those two put together occasionally drive through Lyndon yeah I think lyndenwood is actually an old old wooden ship okay all right Ron Burgundy uh Central Florida a 38 and a half Point favorite they're taking on New Hampshire Colorado is only a 10-point favorite against North Dakota State it would not surprise me at all to see North Dakota State get a win there tonight did you hear big Shakedown yes the yes did you hear about the uh Communications thing with North Dakota and Colorado so color you can use the you can communicate electronically with your quarterback with your quarterback whoever you yeah and and so because North Dakota that that's not that's not part of the that conference package yeah but since they're playing a team that has it that has it yeah then they could do it for this game they don't have another opportunity to do it throughout the football season but they'd have to pay for the annual subscription for that service so they did good for them good I know they got boosters that can handle that I think there's a lot of good money there in sneaky money there oh yeah no there is uh North Dakota State uh North Dakota The Montanas and uh Northern Arizona I think coach uh at Southern Utah mentioned are putting out a little nil money m like there's there's enough money there where they can here's the other thing about nil oh boy here's the other thing about nil let me okay so we were sold in nil like this everybody has the opportunity everybody's going to get a piece of the pie everybody's going to get some sort of funding or some sort of opportunity or whatever it is they they sold it as hey the football team's going to make money but the volleyball team is also going to make money and you know is happening right now the volleyball team is sitting there like this like wait where's our money like P Pablo Escobar in the swing in his backyard like where's my money the swim team is is saying like wait where's my money the LSU gymnastics team outside of liby Dunn is saying where's my money and PS liby Dunn's ni is not even related to what she's a gymnast you mean lyen wood lyen wood is saying where's my money we got our money uh we got our money we don't have any money by the way Lloyd I don't know if you have that cut available but here's we asked the southern Utah coach yesterday about um what he uh what he's telling his team as they get their prepar you know where's your mindset what do you tell your guys in a game where you know you're overmatched and I'm anticipating he's going to give this answer about you know look we take it one play at a time you know we see these upsets happen all the time you go out there you play your best football they put their pads on or they put their pants on one leg at a time like you do you know all that stuff that coach speak like we heard from the uh the coach at Southern Illinois he gave a very asked him the same question about playing BYU and he gave a very coacheak answer yeah but there was also a little bit of confidence like oh yeah he he was like we're coming in to compete we want to we want to leave with a win he said that yeah so he was it was a much different take yes than what Coach Fitzgerald had yesterday and the coach from Southern Utah had a much different perspective on what is going to happen in that game uh against Utah coming up tonight and and if you have not heard that interview in its entirety I highly suggest you go to our podcast feed just search hands and Scotty and whatever podcasting platform you want and you'd be able to listen to the entire interview because he's very direct he's very funny and he's very honest about his team's chances in this game tonight hands which does not give them much of a chance yeah not not much of a chance you think he's doing that to fire up his team he knows it no I think he's doing it because I I think he's so blunt and just so honest as a human being he doesn't know how to and he talked about preparing for this defensive front being the best defensive front speaking of listening to the entire interview you just go to KSL sports.com and you can find it there but you know the other thing too is you look at what uh what they're anticipating in this game tonight is you know Utah is playing Southern Utah and you got a southern Utah team that certainly is got a lot of guys that probably have a little bit of a chip on their shoulder like you know I should have been recruited I should but at the end of the day there's a reason they're not at Utah and they're playing at Southern Utah yeah but they do have some really good talent you're you're absolutely right there's some really good players especially with where we're at where we're at now there's so many high school kids that didn't get what they would have got a division one FBS opportunity that are having to go to the FBS or the division one FCS ranks and try to work their way up so the FCS schools do have better Talent than young than they have had in the past but here's Delane fitgerald on his team's chances and what they hope to uh what he'll be telling his team going into this game tonight we're better than we were last year we're bigger faster stronger more importantly than any of that we're deeper U we got bang no he uh he essentially said we're going to go get a paycheck and and we're not we're going to try not to get hurt that's it school's going then I said well do the players know about the Distribution on that paycheck he said nope and they won't be happy when they find out about it when they potentially find out because it's going to the tennis team and it's going to the soccer team and it's going to the volleyball team oh yeah well there's your money Frank there's where your volleyball team can say hey look at that we got money that our football team just sacrificed themselves so that we can so we can have a program for so we can have a program yeah well that that's the thing we got to turn his mic on there we go you're good keep going no don't don't do that you're good football outside of a few institutions still there's only two at there's only two sports on campus that earn Revenue that that make money and that has to support every else yep uh and Ohio State who prints money prints money is talking about cutting their Olympic sports and dramatically if not eliminating them and turning them into club sports because at the end of the day they're just draining money away from football and and men's basketball that's and so they're like you know what we're just going to go all in and I've heard that from multiple ads that that's the future of what's going to happen sports that's exactly right and so hey I you know okay so football basketball one or two maybe other programs on a particular campus make money to help support everybody else and last year Iowa probably made money on women's basketball but that but that's few far between and then you can you can align with like that providing all these opportunities for everybody else to play Intercollegiate Sports Okay now what's going to happen is that money is going to be because of the way college football is going and college basketball a bit but mostly college football and where the money needs to go and buying student athletes buying athletes that money is going to just naturally have to be diverted because they're going to need more funds and they're going to keep buying people and and and so all the other sports if they can't sustain themselves what like it either goes away or it becomes a club sport yep yep all right final segment next hands and Scotty it's your youth preview show set in the scene for uh JJ and Alex coming up at 3:00 right here on 975 the ekl Sports Zone it's game week for the Youth and the zone is getting you ready for kickoff it's time to kick off the 2024 season as k Winningham the KSL Sports Z your home for the best college football coverage in Utah is on the KSL Sports s the Cougars kick off the 2024 season with a home battle against Southern Illinois your home for the best coverage of cougar football is right here on 975 the KSL Sports Zone this is H Olsen and Scotty G presented by Mountainland Supply on 975 the KSL Sports Z [Music] what do you say to your team when you go up to a place like ricles and you play a team of the caliber of the University of Utah what what's the mindset this team needs to have going into that game you tell them that we're collecting a really healthy check to be here and we're going to run around and play as hard as we can for three hours try to get out of town healthy I love the honesty that's Delane Fitzgerald head coach at Southern Utah just saying it as it is and we're going to run around here I hope they do that like what does Southern Utah have to lose tonight nothing the game like like I hope they run around like crazy like literally running around like crazy like I would love to see Utah on the defensive side like wait what are they doing what is this what kind of offense is this yeah you what I mean just have some fun we're going to run the duck here we go is this single wing what is this why not yeah I would love to see something like that I would I would throw some wrinkles for sure you're not g to just kind of come out there and try to match Braun no you better have some type of angle to keep your guys engaged you don't want this to get to a 40p point situation that you know a complete humiliation mhm in the past Southern Utah's done some good things now I think we all anticipate Utah will win this game easily but at halim will Utah be leading by 20 points or more yes traditionally that always hasn't been the case in these games I've got him leading by 24 points at the half I think it should be in that range I think it should be yeah it wouldn't surprise me if it's like 143 or something like that I've got him come on we don't need one of those I've got him leaning by 24 points at the half and I've got a late cover for southern Utah so I got him on a 38 Point win all right a late cover I like yeah as Utah goes to their second and thirds then Utah finds something yeah there's there's pretty good depth on that Utah defensive side though there is really good except I well you mention the linebacker group so well but there's a lot we need to see there so they got to play those guys out yeah definitely as much as we've been talking about like Isaac Wilson playing getting some playing time I would love to see the linebacker group get some good rotation and get some of those guys experience tonight yep no doubt no doubt final thoughts Frank I would love to come out of this game without I I don't know how to say it exactly I don't I would love to come out of this game without a lot of like Utah's played so effectively and executed so well that there's not a lot of questions questions but answers also like all three running backs were productive so we we don't really know who's going to be the starter next week because they were all so good they were so effective at the line of scrimmage you know cam Rising was I I don't necessarily want to see Utah get tested tonight because that to me is a bad Omen for the rest of the football season they shouldn't well tomorrow we'll be back on the air remember LMA Harrington and Ron McBride it'll be a football Friday coming up tomorrow on the show we'll recap this one and look ahead to the games coming up on Saturday 975 the KSL Sports Zone remember JJ and Alex are going to take you right up until the Ute pregame show then Lloyd and Christian Cox will take over for your pregame show and then as soon as that game goes final Lloyd and Christian will be with you for all the postgame analysis and hopefully talking about a big blowout victory for the youths with no drama whatsoever it's all right here on 975 the KSL Sports Zone
