The Perfect Couple | Wealth, Secrets, and Murder: A Twisted Whodunit | Review w/ Spoilers

Intro hello everyone thank you for watching me here on IC Melanie and on today's video we'll be reviewing the new Netflix minseries called the perfect couple which is a very ironic title because none of the couples in this entire show are anything close to perfect so here is how I'm going to lay out this video today I'll give you the table setting details of the series as a whole the premise of it and then I'll give you my thoughts on the Entre ire miniseries and after that I will go into spoiler territory so I'll give you some high level spoilers and then I'll talk about the reveal who or what instigated this entire mess to begin with and don't worry I'll give you spoiler warning so you know when these things are coming up you know that old expression oh what a tangled web we weave that applies so well to this story there are so many characters in the show that have so many relationships Dynamics entanglements amongst them all it's a mess and I say that in the best possible way because there's drama for days these characters a lot of them are very depraved and so don't let that cute little dance sequence at the beginning fool you these people are terrible the setting is nent The Premise Tucket Massachusetts on a beautiful palacial waterfront property that is the setting for the upcoming coming wedding between Amelia and Benji Benji comes from a rich family and his mom is played by Nicole Kidman her name is Greer and she's a best-selling novelist who happens to have a new book said to be released very shortly after the wedding his dad tag um I'm not quite sure what he does for a living but he comes for money this is his family's property and he loves his cannabis and alcohol and everyone around there wants to get with him the groom also has two brothers Tom who looks pretty close and age to Benji and this guy is your St your your stereotypical Wall Street bro he's crass he's highing himself for no reason Tom has a wife played by Dakota Fanning who happens to be pretty heavily pregnant and they have a younger brother who's 17 his name is Will and both Benji and will they seem like relatively nice guys for people who are so privileged there's also a character named shooter who was Benji's best friend who is going to be his best man and there's another character named Isabelle is a family friend on the dad's side and she's been in their lives forever on the bride side we have Meritt who is emelia's best friend and maid of honor she comes across as a kind of vapid social media influencer wannabe type who only dates men with money but she actually turns out to be you know a pretty good person nonetheless we also have Amelia's parents and her mom learn is suffering from cancer but she's in good spirit she's happy to be there for her daughter's wedding I should point out that there's a big wealth disparity between Benji and Amelia so Benji has known money his entire life he comes from money Amelia she is doing well for herself she put herself through school she's a zoologist but she doesn't have this degree of money most people don't and there are some other characters who also didn't come from money who are in this circle so Abby the sister-in-law who's pregnant she came from some degree of money but not like this and so she said she has learned how to you know play the game to get along with everybody in this family and this type of a circle so all the guests fly in in their PJs and they're there a day before the wedding to take part in some festivities like the rehearsal dinner so they are on the oceanfront property in a tent there all set up and they're having a grand old time their speech is being made people are laughing a lot of superficial conversations are going on and so on and they were dressed nicely they look great and when I saw this scene I thought of one of my favorite shows succession where very similarly they had a lot of different festivities and you can tell that these people have money but there's a difference because I found even with succession like even though was very obviously obvious these people were Rich their wealth was a little understated in terms of how they presented themselves but in this show I found that that quiet luxury from succession just wasn't there this was loud luxury everything was in your face from the display of all the lobsters or crab legs and the champagne fountains and everything it was just an almost garish display of money which you know I call it garish but I would totally love to go to a party like this at least once in my life but yeah it was very over the toop so this definitely helped to set the scene of how these people would interact with the world um later on throughout the series the morning of the wedding comes and Amelia wakes up very early in the morning it looks like it might be 6 7 o'clock in the morning she puts on her dress she hasn't done her makeup or hair or anything but she puts on her dress and she looks out the window and she sees something floating in the water and then she goes down to see what it is so this I don't consider a spoiler because the entire rest of the show is based on this occurrence so I'm going to say right now she goes down there and she sees the body and the body is of her best friend Merritt Meritt is dead and of course she is very upset and so the wedding doesn't happen that day obviously because she's upset the house is a crime scene and this story becomes a who done it so now I'm going to go My Thoughts on The Perfect Couple into my thoughts around this series so this series was very well executed again there are lots of characters as I showed you a few minutes ago and there are a lot of interrelated relationships and Dynamics amongst these people so more relationships than just the primary ones like mother and child or husband and wife and so on everyone is related somehow to a friend to this person to that person there's a lot of entanglements in this show all these entanglements make sense they don't seem contrived because we learn about the history of these people these people have been in each other's lives for a very long time to different degrees right so everything makes sense and there are a lot of red herrings in this movie you look at a certain person in their actions and you think well they look guilty as Sin but it could end up being innocuous um there a lot of different things going on like it's a mess and I say that in the best way because I love messy TV shows so yeah it worked out very very well the setting and the cinematography of this show were also very nice like again being in Nantucket I've never actually been to Nantucket before but seeing all the shots of the town of the House of the ocean of the beautiful sunsets and the water like it was just gorgeous it was very well done and I it looked like it was an actual house okay it wasn't a set or anything at least most of the scenes were in sets you can actually see the exterior of the house and so the geography actually of this show plays a big part as I just mentioned the lady was found in the water but yeah it's a very um beautiful looking show another thing going back to the characters I think that they were welld developed they were well written because a lot of time is especially when you've got characters who are super wealthy they can come across as like caricatures right where these people are just all like pompous and rude and bad like they weren't really like that there was one who was like that but based on his profession being like a Wall Street bro the brother he might come across the caricature but there are a lot of people who are actually like that in real life so it is realistic and it's funny too because we see a lot of the different so help staff right people that they that Nicole Kim's character would call the help so we've got the wedding planner who he's like their General event planner and some of the housekeeping staff like the cooks and so on and it's funny because these people who the these rich folks would look at as the lowly help even they are judgmental on some of the guests who come to the house and you know on the pecking order of things the help are down here and those guests or the family members would be up here but it was actually pretty funny how judgmental the staff were to the people who were here for the wedding and all the acting was good as I expected so obviously Nicole Kidman like we know Nicole Kidman she's amazing she's been amazing forever um leab Shriver I watched the first season of Ray Donovan he's good um the lady who plays Amelia I forget her real name but I know she's Bono's daughter in real life I saw her in that miniseries called behind her eyes which was kind of a ridiculous show but it was actually pretty good and she was great in that and I know the other lady who played a Meritt from White Lotus and so like I know a lot of these characters from other or these actors from other shows and so yeah the acting was pretty great all around and they they did well in the craziness that their characters presented and what I liked about tag so LEF shriver's character is that he was always interjecting like 80s and 90s pop ballads into it so of course we heard Rick asley we heard some slen Deion and stuff so that was pretty funny the only thing that I would really critique in this show was Nicole Kidman's wig how do you get the Nicole Kidman and put her in this six-part miniseries and have her in that terrible wig it was so bad like I could find a better wig at the hair store down the street from me like the part part was really unrealistic it just looked so cheap like it didn't have the lace and she was wearing it in the throughout the entire show and the curls were just like too big and bouncy I don't think it was a really bad wig you next do not do not put Nicole Kidman in a wig like that ever like come on that was really really bad when I do movie and TV reviews I don't read or watch other people's reviews of it before I film my video because I don't want to be influenced by other people's opinions but I am a lady who is on the internet on Twitter a lot and so I did come across one review so I was captured by the headline and basically it said that this movie or this miniseries was pretending to be a Prestige drama and it wasn't and I was a little taken by that because I don't think that this miniseries was trying to be a Prestige drama I think it was trying to be a who done it that was suspenseful and entertaining and I don't think it was trying to be highbrow or anything like that and that's not a a a a dis or I don't think that's um insulting this property by saying that I think it was meant to be an entertaining show and it was and I think it executed very well I was interested the entire time there again there were so many different things just poking out like different red herrings and all sorts of mess which I think makes the best type of dramatic TV show so yeah I would definitely recommend this to anybody who wants to watch a beautiful looking show with messy messy characters that are very suspenseful like I thought was great The Perfect Couple Spoilers okay so now I'll talk about the the details of the plot so as I mentioned at the top there are many different interactions entanglements amongst these people and a lot of them are pretty proxim MIT to Merit whether it was emotionally or physically and for various insundry reasons a lot of them seem to have legitimate motives to want her dead so watching all these things play out was very intriguing and this family is very secretive so Greer is a best-selling novelist well she's a celebrity she's a public figure and she's got a book coming out in the next couple of days and she doesn't want bad press who wants bad press right and so ndas are thrown about and are mentioned a lot in this movie and you know ndas for a lot of times people automatically are suspicious of when people are throwing about ndas but is it is a legal Safeguard so that also adds the Intrigue it's like why do you want me to keep quiet on these things like what's going on with you another major plot Point spoiler is that Meritt was pregnant when she died and she happened to be pregnant with tags baby so her best friend's future father-in-law's baby so this would obviously put a major damper be a major dis disruption to the windberry family structure so you've got this new stepson you've got this new half brother and this child would be 18 years younger than the youngest child so not the most ideal circumstance to say the very least of of course the Windber the family they're under investigation and they are interacting with the police a lot and even with all the extra scrutiny of having the police looking over their shoulders and interviewing them left and right all these again these inter relationships these entanglements are still going on there are lots of clandestine meetings there are a lot of odd things happening for voting phone calls it's like you guys are messes and you're under a microscope right now maybe you should hold off on these things but this kind of leads to another thing so obviously the wind berries are rich and they have made it very clear that they have funded the Nantucket police department and they know the main um police officer there um officer um Dan Carter I believe pretty well they know his daughter they're little friendly with him and so on but they believe that because they are who they are and the fact that they have donated money to the police force that they should get this extra degree of leniency or the police should look another way and the police officers are like no no no no no we're not doing this yeah you might fund us thank you we appreciate the funding but there is a crime going on there a crime happened we are going to get to the bottom of this we don't care that you're rich and that you've helped us out in the past so Dan Carter is played by Michael Beach and Michael Beach is great like he's been around forever I first learned of him back when I used to watch Third Watch on NBC like 20 plus years ago so he's great and we've got the other officer detective Henry who's played by Donal Lin Champlain and she was great she totally gave that Massachusetts Boston is No Nonsense kind of a Vibe but she was Stern but also she was quite friendly okay so the video's almost done and the question is who done it and why so the person who did it who killed Meritt was Abby the pregnant wife of Tom one of the brothers of the groom and why did she do it money and if you want to find out why she needed that money and how and all that stuff
