Matukewicz FCS Kickoff Postgame Press Conference

yeah it was just a great team win um of course you love uh the second half stuff but I mean it was the defense you know D the ball away um offensively they ran the ball but we had multiple plays on special game so it was just great cre team wi loved how they responded when the quarterback went down um so happy and proud of my football team what was the the overall message at half time L to change you're fine we're fine right lock in do your job to the best your ability and we we'll get going here I mean there was no Panic I didn't feel like anybody needed a panic you know really we're moving the ball we had a bad turn over in the red zone or otherwise if we had punched it in there you know we' have felt a lot better about the first half so it's a drastic difference how you guys play the second half the first half you guys anything differently from the opposing offense turnovers no it felt like we wore down a little bit on offense they had a lot of uh cramping or whatever going on on defense um and then it got to two scores and so then they threw it a little bit more and they were able to take it away but um it just uh you know just kept on and a f kind of took off for us in the second half go back I go back to when you lose your quarterback and everything do you do you change the game plan a little bit or do you how do you kind of go from there no uh you know Carter is a very similar player uh I don't think Carter's gotten a be in his life I had everybody do an evaluation at the end of the last year and he typed his up and gave me pamphlets so I I knew he was going to be prepared and uh smart and ready for the opportunity and they're very similar so um it was still just about uh you know the same game plan talk about a lot of players showing out in the first game defense prob probably a better game a red he did how about his performance yeah and he was another guy that came in Mali got a targeting penalty and so then increased his JP's uh reps and just did a great job he's made some plays at f he was trying to get in shape from the uh summer and all that uh and we knew he's kind of a playmaker but uh he made some plays on the quarterback then obviously that was a just a great pick that he you know kind of took the ball away there I know you probably say practice going back pton did and everything he just kind of got look like he got stronger as the game went on or got a little more confidence going which I'm not sure if you expect that of a freshman or not no he's not a normal freshman he was raised very very very different than most kids uh both parents are uh College athletes uh kind of coaches they just they do a great job of their children he also came in in January and so he got that experience in Spring Bowl we thought he was good um you know when we signed him but we were a little surprised how sudden and uh you know he could just really process pretty quick when you a kid that size you assume that it might take him a little bit to build that to want quickness but really uh you know he's he's off and running this is the first game that you guys are playn audience what does it mean for this program to win not just win F no it's it's it's this is a big moment this is a big opportunity because it's not just about our program it's about our University you get Simo on national television and a national Spotlight at 6 PM you get our region and our people and just so many people have bought into our program and uh sacrificed a lot to build it to where it's uh now got a you know the ability to have a profile that gets to be on ESPN so this is a true Community style win um especially if you've been around for 11 years coach we appreciate it very thank you
