Jaguars Restructure RG Brandon Scherff, Panthers Sign OLB K'Lavon Chaisson

Intro hello and welcome to the cardiac hats YouTube channel I'm your host Jacob shorba and I've got a video today updating the Brandon Sheriff contract restructure you could also call the pay cut just want to give you guys the official numbers for this since we never really got to it it was shown technically on my video earlier today but I never really talked too much in detail so I wanted to explain what the effective pay is for this year how much they're saving over all over all these Seasons right and includes this year all the void years just to know where that ended up landing and I also want to talk about Kon Chason getting signed to the Carolina Panthers laugh out loud at that by the way and just if that's going to Brandon Scherff count as a compensatory free agent because that is going to be an important part of the process for the Jaguars to potentially get a comp pick for Calvin Ridley which we expect to be pick 100 and I can kind of explain why at the end of this video as well but jump into it first this is Brandon Sheriff's new contract and I want to make it clear this is essentially a brand new contract it carries over the signing bonuses that have been prated down the road but this is an entirely different contract aside from that you can see that when we go to the history that these are two separate contracts this has been renegotiated and that's the stat of it that's why it's no longer the effective one but Brandon Sher cap hit went down down roughly 12 million this year saved a lot of money there and then they've got now four voiders you see three where they end up having you know about a $4 million cap hit and then 2028 they'll take a smaller one at 1.8 million so there's a lot of money saved right but you're pushing money down the road still you know that's always going to be the opposite side of this the the argument against you're going to pay for it at some point but the thing that I think people need to understand about the Brandon sherre structure that was not made clear when it was originally reported is that it was being restructured and renegotiated in part because he was taking a pay cut he is not earning 16 A5 million and shout out to John Shipley for giving us that information for the few people who got to see that because it was kind of hard to find but that ended up being true and Brandon Sheriff ends up taking a pay cut so I want to explain what that looks like you go to the history of the contract here you can see as far as uh his earnings by team okay hold up let's nope sorry up here contract history so this was the total amount of the contract first of all right he was expected to earn 16.5 million that's why you get to this 49.5 Million number he ended up earning 33 million because he played out two of the three years of the contract which is when it was negotiated or renegotiated so the guarantees all played out at at that point right and then you end up getting to this third year where you got this big cat pit you got to do something about it and so the Jaguars redid it effectively to where it was a one-year deal it was going to take place of the third year of the original contract and you can see that the cat pit you know or sorry not the CIT let's let's call it apy ends up going down from 16.5 million to 10 million and I believe I put out a Twitter post a while back that actually stated that number I was saying basically if they could at least get it here I'm okay with it wouldn't be my first option but for them I mean they love him as a player they found a way to keep him around for you know less than two-thirds of the cost so you know that's a good deal for what they want to do obviously you know we question things because as much as PFF wants to tell us he was fantastic this last year with no flaws like you can watch the film and you can see issues but you can also make the counter AR arent that all the guards in the team struggled mightily because you could see on film as well that they're constantly having to pick up Luke fortner's assignments and so as much as M Mitch Morris isn't like the allpro version of himself necessarily at this point he's still a pretty good player that's a huge Improvement and that's going to change a lot and I think Brandon sherf will be a better player this year even with age as a factor so effectively over all these Seasons the Jaguars are able to save $6.5 million so I would call that a win for them I I like that I think it's a smart move the important part of this as well and you're going to get tired of me talking about this all the time and you can see I'm about to talk about it because I brought up compensatory picks up here but this helps you land a future compensatory pick because if Brandon Sheriff doesn't retire at the end of next year which I think he'll be 33 pretty sure at most he's 34 if he signs a contract with another team he's going to earn a decent amount because he's a former all proo I think he's made five Pro bowls throughout his career like teams are going to pay for that even if you're not the same guy someone's going to give him the money look at Brandon mcmanis for example I know it's a kicker but like he didn't have that great of a year with us and then he got paid like what three and uh 3.75 million something crazy like nearly $4 million by the commanders which was a huge win for Jacksonville because that ends up being a CFA but when you keep a guy like Brandon Sheriff around for that whole contract it works really well for the next year if you have a big player walk because if you can't keep that player they hit the market you want to get something back in return and you need to lose your own guys as well to offset that and so Brandon Sheriff's a player I think he's here for one more year I think he's gone after that but they should get a compensatory pick out of this potentially unless they spend a ton of money it will help with the formula that's a win that's an important part of this and I'll tell you why as well like you look at this year say if Darius Williams um ran Jenkins and fully fasi had two-year deals which is how long they played say they didn't throw on that third year that wasn't guaranteed and they didn't cut him because it was an expiring contract the comp pick would be locked up right now we would be getting more than the Calvin Ridley comp pick by this point actually so it is very important to try to play out entire contracts because that's how you get extra ammo in the draft that's how you get those late round picks you can flip those for veterans even who get you more those one-year deals that work out pretty well there's things you could do with it and it helps you move around the draft as well so it is important and so Brandon Sheriff will help with that next year but obviously like I want to make it clear that's not the primary factor that's a part of it so it's good for Jack to be able to play out the whole contract with their players they find a way to get the contract value down I like that move you know even if I would have rather gone out and got a different guard but you know the guard Market did explode this year so there there's even an argument to be made there as well so Salary Cap as far as the salary cap we showed this this morning this is where we sit before the Eric Armstead signing it's not factored in I imagine he probably has a cap hit around five to six million realistically seeing that Gabriel Davis he was 13 million a year he's at 4.7 there's a lot of money that gets pushed down the road in these deals so I think that's probably where he falls and so if that's the case you know we've talked a little bit about a brand and iuk trade possibly happening that's got a lot of steam around it still does now if that happens they have a lot of the money that they absolutely need this year to pay for it all they just got to restructure maybe a little bit more you know do do one move I think to get that done so that's where they sit now the other part of this video and this kind of goes along with the coment story pick stuff but caleon Chason ends up signing with the Panthers in here um it shows it as a non CFA right now that is only because we do not have the contract value there are players listed for other teams on here that are clearly going to be cfas so kaleon Chason got a $5 million deal with the Carolina Panthers now what's important about that is that is the max value of the deal I've waited a while to record this because I wanted to get the base value I have weigh it all day we have gotten no numbers I would basically have to wait like two days to get it but what you're looking for is you want him to meet a certain threshold to to end up counting as a CFA and the reason why is because if he and two other players at least count as cfa's lost this Gabriel Davis pick or this this CFA game will not cancel out the Calvin Ridley compensation pick but it will instead cancel out one of those other cfas which is vital because this will probably be pick 100 and why I say that is because where it falls on the value scale it is right above Robert hunt and so if you imagine that no teams are losing their um what am I trying to say let's okay let's let's say that we end up getting the Calvin rley pick okay you have kurk cousins for one that's above him okay I remember what I was saying imagine no teams lose their draft picks this year because we've had a lot of that recently there's been tampering that might happen again I know the Falcons I think the Eagles are being investigated but say that the 96 picks for the first three rounds count 97 is Kirk Cousins 98 is Christian Wilkins 99 would not be Calvin Ridley it would most likely be kurk cousins that or sorry not Kirk Cousins denil Hunter that's the last deal that I think will count as a CFA because I think the Vikings only need to lose one more player and they have a ton of players out on the market they're still available to sign one of them will get signed it's way more likely than us getting ours signed which still I expect to happen Calvin Ridley's fourth on this list it counts as a third round pick it would be pick one her that's what we're Contract Threshold talking about but Kon Chason the important thing for him is that he meets a threshold and based off my calculations I've got these on Twitter it's definitely a post to check out um it it's important one if you want to understand this process right now the threshold as far as the value number that you want to hit to be a CFA lost is I believe 1346 1,346 with more contracts getting signed bigger contracts getting signed I think you want to be a little above that so I went with 1370 which was like 15 or 20 players above which I think would qualify for that to be reached this first number is the contract value essentially there's a number assigned for it these are apy that match up with that from real players that had this exact same contract value and this would get you to this number that should qualify first number is what they need to make now the second is what they made before so caleon Chason he was kept by the Jaguars on a deal that effectively paid him $3.3 million that was the base he was guaranteed basically all that money if he was here now you also have to look at well we're going to look at the 3 million right and we're going to hope that the base value for what the Panthers pay him him is at least that and I think it will be I think it's going to be 3 to 3.5 realistically there will be incentives we know that because the max value is up to the certain number which means that there are incentives involved as long as he hits that number which I will try to figure out as soon as I can we are just waiting on details it's not public information yet he will be one of those CFA out count at that point you need two more players so I think Trey hearnen is one of those he was paid 2.6 million roughly by the Jaguars last year to stick around here he had other teams negotiating with him other teams wanted to pick him up there was interest the Jaguars are not bringing him back this year and Trey hearen You could argue came off his best year he has gotten better every single season so I think Trey hearen realistically ends up probably hanging the 3 million Mark makes the cut for this the smoo I think will earn enough as well he's only got a hit about 3 million as well he's very similar as far as what he needs the second number is essentially the percentage of snaps you played it's a scale of 25 to 100 if you've played less than 25% you don't get any points which is why like Jamal agnu doesn't get any because he's mainly a special teamer he plays a little bit on offense not that much so if dwan Smo can get 3 million that's another one and that gets you over the mark you've also got Jamal agu if he gets a decent deal he would count and then Tyler Shatley as well which he got paid pretty close to it I don't know if he's retiring I don't know if he's getting brought back no clue right now but he's been a good backup for Jacksonville it's very possible that he gets that kind of deal but assuming Kon Chason hits this Mark we need two more players to count and if the Jaguars do not spend anymore on compensatory free agents which I do not expect I think it would be a really stupid decision and I know that they're aware of this process because they have to be that's their job if this is the case and Chason counts and you get two more they will get the 100th overall selection next year most likely depending on tampering and depending on no other major contracts getting signed which just honestly the players are not out there in free agency right now to beat the 23 million a year deal that Calvin Ridley got so that's where we're at and as far Chaisson as just talking about Chason look I mean it sucks I I I hate that it didn't work out right and that should probably be the focus of this is talking about his career here over you know the compensatory stuff but it is a pretty big pick we're talking about but ultimately like Chason throughout his four years he had five sacks this was his best year with two he has not been a productive pass thrusher had a lot of issues as far as just what he's been able to do on the field he has hasn't got a lot of snaps because of it and so it's unfortunate and especially because of how good that draft class was right after that pick with Justin Jefferson going off the board you know it's it's crazy that the Jaguars missed on all those early picks you know I think the only players that stuck around from that class officially are Daniel Thomas and Devon Hamilton and and they're good players they were good picks like that was fine it's almost the exact opposite of what the modern day Jaguars do because with Trent balky we'll hit the early picks as in the first rounder and then we'll miss everything from there other than maybe one light and with you know Dave Caldwell I guess you hit some of the later ones once in a while which is a little different but then you waste half your Jaylen Ramsey compensation but you know overall like it it's funny he goes to Carolina um hopefully it works out for them you know I wish him nothing but the best I actually uh you can make fun of me for it I he was a player I wanted that draft um I even thought about trading up for him at that point but keep in mind I was not that well versed in football at that point and uh I I think at that point mainly like what made me really like Chason was that people didn't want to play for the Jaguars then right and we watched him like do training videos where he's got the Jaguar shirt on and it looks like he wants to go there he's a fan and it was just a time where like this team needed I think a change in culture and obviously that didn't happen until a couple years later with Doug Pearson coming in but that was a big reason why I liked him and obviously it didn't work out but you know it is what it is and hopefully it factors into getting the comp pick and he works out in Carolina you know I I wish him nothing but the best but that's what I've got for you guys um I'll keep you Brandon Iuk updated on anything else I think uh we're kind of getting to the point where there might be some downtime in decisions getting made but we could get some really big news at some point because I'll tell you if the Brandon iuk trade goes through which what we think we know right now is that the Jaguars they want to wide receiver one they see one guy as being an option in the draft from everything we've been told it's Romo dun they talked about trading up for him at the combine at least reporters were talking about the Jaguars as one of those teams they met with him I believe that's their clear guy and if you believe the bulky burner on Twitter which has conveniently been on it every time the Jaguars have stopped doing free agent moves and it talks the same way and says the same quotes which that could be fake but if you believe that and and I think I do at this point they they've he said on there that he doesn't want to pick a different receiver in the first round it depends on who's there and I get that because I think Brian Thomas Jr and AD Mitchell good players but there's just so much talent in this class that I have a hard time seeing them as the best pick there we'll see what happens of course but if the Jaguars see one guy as an option who's probably not going to be there and they feel like they need to get a wide receiver one because they're doing these negotiations already they don't want Z Jones I think that's pretty clear right now this is really probably their only option because I don't think T Higgins is getting moved I think Cincinnati is going to commit to trying to make a Super Bowl run this year here accepting that he's going to walk he's just going to get him a comp pick I think that's what's going to happen just my guess but we'll see I think iuk is is probably the only option and we know the Jaguars are interested we know iuk is interested and we know the 49ers are interested in moving off some of their contracts that are coming up or being paid out right now so at some point if that happens man it's going to be a lot to talk about on this channel we just got to cross our fingers and hope for it but that's why I've got for you guys I want to say as well thank you to everyone who has subscribed recently
