MLB Network | Mark Derosa reacts Pete Alonso & Jesse Winker homered, powers Mets def. White Sox 5-3

Chicago but the Mets hold on they get the win by a final of 5-3 over the white socks they take the opening two games of the series they win the series they go for the sweep of the socks tomorrow and they do something tonight Jerry they have not done once this season and that is get to eight games over 500 so they finally get there after six tries so let's go back to Chicago right now get a look at our notes from this game and the Mets wasted no time jumping in front of the white socks in the first inning pet Gonzo with one on and that one is not coming back his 30th home run of the season a two bomb he joins Mike fatza as the only two Mets with four consecutive seasons of at least 30 home runs very next batter that's Jesse Wier and there we go back-to-back Jacks 13th of the season for Winker his second is a met and it was 3 nothing the Mets had the lead 3-1 game in the third inning Winker extends the Mets lead his second hit of the night it drops in out there Francisco Lindor who got off the inning with a single races in it was 4-1 Mets in the sixth inning 5-2 game and the defense coming up big Brandon Nimo On The Run makes the dive and he makes a terrific catch out there takes a hit away from Sosa socks got a run in the ninth inning to make it a 5-3 game had the potential winning run at the plate but Jose BAU settles down he gets Andrew benon tendi to bounce right back to him and that's it Mets get the win 5-3 and again up to eight games over 500 on the season and they pick up ground in the Wild Card race tonight we're going to get to that in just a little bit but that was a gut thing there by the manager B was was bending and facing uh Ben and tendi there he had the left-hander a Danny Young up in the bullpen but he stuck with B what did you what did you I know it worked out but what was your thought process yeah I mean this is the thing uh for Jose buo uh he hasn't been throwing strikes lately uh during July that's kind of what has been is Achilles heel he still had a really good month just not as dominant as he was in July well tonight he was throwing strikes he he threw uh a really good at bat to Vargas who ended up doubling uh and then aaya put together a good swing uh and he had him he had a two outs another little seeing ice single from Luis Robert or a softline drive that got just out of the reach of Lindor everything says go to Danny Young there uh the manager saw on the field okay it's softer contact they're just not getting to the ball B stuff looked good and he said I'm going to stick with my guy I'm going to have my gut feeling to go with it I like it I like it right there because B was still throwing St and he makes two perfect change UPS to Andrew benintendi who's the one of the hottest hitters in baseball right now having the best month of his career right now uh and he throws a first one to get a nice swing and miss and then the second one just a little further off the plate away to get an easy ground ball the first time he's looked like an easy out in the whole uh his the whole series so far great job by Mendoza sticking with this guy understanding that the that the line may not look as pretty as he actually pitched and good job on B taking a deep breath and getting the job done so he spoken so many times and again uh Edwin Diaz was not available out of the bullpen tonight he had worked the three previous games so he was down for the match tonight but last night they got three and two3 of hitless and scoreless and and wless work out of the bullpen and then tonight brazoban stanic maton were all very good and I think that's an encouraging sign here as we now have 26 games to go in the regular season yeah absolutely uh and they talked about it on uh on the broadcast this is the hardest thing a manager has to do especially a firsttime manager is to understand what the bullpen doing they've blown some games here on this road trip but he had Diaz work three nights in a row last night he knew he was going to be down I agree with the call to to bring him in with four runs last night but you knew he was going to be down tonight what do you do how do you piece it together with this lineup set and they came through for him that's what's special last night they did a great job brason does a great job after a hit by pitch he comes in and gets a big out uh and then stanic looked the best I've seen him uh firsthand looking great Phil mton comes in gets a job done one two three that sets it up this is your second best reliever in Jose B and he does a good job he B but didn't break gave up the one run the only run the bullpen has given up in these last two days the only hits that this Bullpen has given up in the last two days but he looked sharp he threw strikes got ahead uh sometimes the ball's going to find a Hole uh he stuck with his guy Mendoza did and B paid it off and the whole bu did to it certainly did and Phil mton boy he's been he's been amazing one of the better pickups they've had throughout the course of the season right he's worked for of the last five days and doing really good things and we can see he's very much in the manager circle of trust late in the game so that was great to see let's go back to the offensive side here and that's Pete Alonzo because the Mets took the lead there in the first inning and Alonzo got them going with his 30th home run of the Season let's go through that home run what impressed you about it jar well first of all just the power that that P Alonzo has that's impressive but this was Davis Martin came out looking really sharp you can tell why his numbers are are as good as they are but with a runner on he hung a first pitch slider this first bad pitch he's thrown the entire inning and pet Alonzo does what he needs to do on a hanging breaking ball the polar bear deposits it deep and they get a quick two-run home run from him jump out to the lead give your starting pitcher a little bit of breathing room uh and that just a good swing that you need to see from pet alono hopefully he can throw the offense on his back and carry this team through the month of September he is now homered against every team in the majors aside from the Mets right he's only played for the Mets but all other 29 teams yes it would be so a big night for pet Gonzo had two hits in the game it's the fifth time in his career he's hit 30 home runs in a season so he has a big offensive night Jesse Winker has a big offensive night back-to-back three hit games for Jesse Winker couple of moments ago he had a chance to visit with Steve GPS Jesse Winker another three hits a home run smoking hot at the play right now what's going so well for you uh just you know just trying to put the barrel on the ball um you know get pitches up and and something you can drive um just try to help the team win we've noticed since you've been a met that seems like you're more aggressive earlier in counts you're seeing fewer pitches is that just a coincidence or have you changed your Approach at all here yeah I don't know I haven't I don't I don't think I've changed anything like game planning per se um you know I'm just I'm just trying to uh get a good pitch to hit and put the barrel on it and keep it simple after that first inning home run I saw when you were running back out looking up at the seven line having some fun with them waving just in general how much fun are you having during this stretch yeah know it's uh it's been amazing it's been a dream come true for Real uh seven line being here was awesome you know Mets fans are amazing um so thankful for them and we're going to need them all right Jesse appreciate the time thank jermy Peña had a great night the as great 42 seven extra base hits couple of those are home runs the rbi's got nine of them the slug at 49 AT3 and the Ops at 857 and when you really think about this Jerry started slow as a met got out of the gate slowly but those numbers are even more impressive because of that when you look at is at bats what what's jumping out at you yeah first of all Ultimate Team guy uh Jesse Winker he's not worried about playing time he just wants to be part of a winning team trying to play into October and it shows he comes up to bat and what he's done as a hitter is he's he's known for walking he works the count and when he get gets a pitch to hit this is back to back with Pete Alonzo that's a pitch that's a bad pitch uh same as the home run to Pete Alonzo but Jesse Winker deposits it this one is a good pitch a fast ball in but when you're hot you're hot he dunks one in over the second baseman's head for another RBI and this is a ball that left over the heart and this is what you do he he tries to get it ahead in the count the pitcher makes a mistake and he gets the barrel to it those are two really hard hit balls and then one where the ball gets in on him but he's strong enough to get the ball over just putting together good at bats being uh a great guy to extend that lineup as we said before the game Jesse Winker what an amazing acquisition he was at the trade deadline uh by David Sterns by the way he's now got eight hits over the course of his last 11 at bats so he is swinging a really hot bat right now let's get check right now the wild card situation in the National League let's check in on the Atlanta Braves whom the Mets are chasing by the third inning facing the Phillies down at Citizens Bank Park that's and Mundo Sosa gets a hold of one that was a bomb 450 feet the solo shot Philadelphia had the lead for good it was one- nothing in the fifth inning Zack Wheeler the former met getting Ramone laurano right there andon he catches Jorge Solair looking wheeler seven shutout Innings seven strikeouts and no walks gets his 100th career victory in the sixth inning trade Turner that one is up and that one is out bit of insurance his 15th home run of the year and the to Le's go on to get the win by a final of three to nothing so here we go National League wild card picture up to the moment the Mets are now back within two games of Atlanta they're four games behind San Diego and at the moment four and a half behind Arizona got a little bit dicey there in the ninth inning but Mets get the win over the White Sox tonight by a final of 5-3 they've won three consecutive games now by the way the Chicago White Socks are now 31 and6 it is almost unfathomable the season that they are having but let's go back to Mets here uh double digits it hits now three consecutive games Jesse Winker had three of those we hear from the manager here's Carlos Mendoza Carlos I know we've asked you a bunch about Jesse Winker the last couple of days but what are you seeing from him offensively uh locked in he's locked in right now quality at bat after quality at bats um though he hit I think it was a change up that Homer the first uh first at bad a guy that's got a pretty good change up uh so yeah controlling the strike zone uh things that we knew he was capable of and he just locked in right now what did you see out of budo in that night uh he threw strikes I thought um he got happy with the four seam uh especially to Vargas he got away from his two seam in the slider uh but look he kept making pitches I thought he make huge uh huge two pitches to Benny tendi after two outs you know because you could tell that Benny tendi was going for and the change up first pitch and then back toback change up to finally get the last out uh but like I said um maybe sequencing a little bit but at the end of the day he he got the job done going into September how do you feel uh good you know uh we're in a good spot and we will continue to bring it every day uh and again one day at a time one series at a time so um we just uh control the things that we need to control a lot of Defense good defensive efforts tonight nmo laying out for that catch and McNeil running all the way to right field I mean you guys just aren't taking your foot off the pedal yeah no and then that's what we need to do you know um to be able to continue to win games and and stay in there we have to do the little things and uh I thought it was really good to see Nemo today there some hell of a play um you know hold on they the G makes it look really easy you know off the bat I don't think he was even near to the ball and he just got there for the last out I think it was the seventh or eighth yeah we continue to you know um play good defense and um you know I thought the bullpen today was really good too what you take away Mark a start uh he had to battle he had to battle today but find a way to give us five there um some deep counts you know got behind a lot of three ball counts uh they hit some ball har uh in the ground um found holes but look um gave was five ended up getting the W so did you just s any the extra player yet no about to meet with baby now so okay two home R for Peter Lonzo early just kind how nice is to have like that type of player at Top Line of yeah I mean we want to need him uh and to see him uh aggressive with a first pitch slider there to hit that Homer uh he's he's his bats have been better you know there's a lot of 3-2 counts he's winning some some of those counts now and uh and he's doing damage so when he's doing that he's a Prett pretty dangerous heer one of the things manager spoke about was the way the defense is coming up big for his team and I think that that was on full display there in the sixth inning we saw Nimo make a great catch and then Lindor just continuing Jerry to do what has done all season long from a defensive standpoint yeah it wasn't just that inning but that was a highlight you saw he talked about mcneel uh running out to right field when Marte temporarily lost him on the lights that's hustle you don't see that very often uh it's nice to have guys like Bader and uh Taylor come off the bench they can play great defense but it all start in that six inning uh highlight and you see what Nemo's capable of doing this is not an easy ball to catch this ball is cutting towards the line it is a line drive Nemo gets a great jump on it a good read temporarily there was pretty uh breathholding moment where you see his wrist kind of Tuck under his his body as he folds up but that's full extension that is understanding of the moment Nemo not known for diving all of the time but makes it clutch and then this patented Lindor this ball is a hot shot this is uh oh never mind this is a replay of uh nmo I'd like to see it again that's how good it is uh yeah full extension obviously uh worrying about his risk but then this is this is what Lindor does a ball to his left being able to backhand it understanding the runner Pete does a good job of staying on the base but Lindor not known for his arm this is a understanding he can't bounce this because of the runner puts it in the air keeps it on the line that is what Lindor has been doing all season and All Care his whole entire career especially in a Mets uniform but when you get defense like that it makes pitching so much easier understanding that you don't have to strike everybody out you can let Defense work behind you uh it's fun to watch as a product of somebody that covers it I enjoy seeing it all the time it is fun to watch and I would imagine as a pitcher when you have that sort of Defense behind you you are in great appreciation of that and that must change the equation for you as a pitcher when you know that's behind you yeah absolutely you don't have to go for strikeouts when you know that your defense is capable of making plays and with the Mets they have a lot of guys that make plays above Big League average when you know that's behind you it makes it a lot easier to attack the zone therefore you get more strikeouts because you understand that that as long as you're you're getting ahead your defense will work behind you it's a it's a wonderful thing when you have a defense like that behind you when you're on the mou all right we've got more to come here on Mets postgame live we heard Carlos Mendoza say when it came to Jose kintana that he struggled a little bit to find his command today but he did get them through five innings and when we come back we are going to hear from Jose kintana he was the winning pitcher there is a speed bump
