League Baseball on MLB The Show it's the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Boston Red Sox with my partner Chris Singleton I'm John shabi well singy when you consider the top hitters ballparks in the sport this has got to be one of them I'll say this pitchers have to stay with their game they can't look over their shoulder and think I have to be fine and perfect on every pitch continue to pitch to your strengths and you'll come out of here with a good outing all right we'll be back to get this one started after this just about set to go and today's starting pitcher Nick pavetta what's the word on him anytime you have five pitches to work with on the mound that repertoire can be a real weapon in terms of keeping hitters off balance man it's it's one of those things that I'm going to be looking for in this one does he have a feel for all of those pitches or is he just able to get one or two over in the strike zone where he wants now it's tough to do to be able to command all those pitches but if he can he is going to be very tough for the opponent today Corbin Carroll the leadoff batter as he looks at ball one and another ball well second Pitch of this game and already getting squeezed a little bit that one's in there and it's two and one and the pitch that misses and the count is three and one sharp grounder that's through for a base hit man aboard on the leadoff single well when you fall behind in the count you've got to come into the zone and then guys have a better chance of hitting a ball hard like he did right there here's catel Marte just off the outside edge ball one and he deals just missed Chris with that distraction and the Speedy guy at first he's in a favorable hitters count well if nothing else I mean this is a great spot for a hitter to be in popped up foul territory behind the plate and that's a foul ball the 2-1 that Clips the inside corner for a strike and a foul ball he stays alive and a pitch so here we go base runner at first could be running on the pitch he's got good enough speed to steal the bag to get in scoring position even if it's story flips it for one relay to First double play got what he was looking for on the mound right there and his infielders took care of business pretty textbook execution between short and second to turn that into two outs and now it's Christian Walker and that misses off the outside edge two out Bas is empty just off the Inside Edge the 2 is in for a strike back-to-back fast balls in that last one called for a strike probably go away but look for him to come back in there to try to finish you off right through there for a strike hard hit right side he takes it himself to the bag and that'll do it half ining complete we've got no score back now at Fenway and today's starter Zack Gallen well the big thing is that the way he holds his curveball it's more of a knuckle curve and because of that it's less predictable in terms of the break for the hitter that makes it that much harder to hit this guy bottom of the first so stepping in for Boston jiren Durant ha in the pitch just missed swing at Miss and one and one instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended tied him up a little bit slightly up slightly in swing and a miss as he was out front that time struck Him Out Swinging he swung over top of the curveball oh there's a small side of relief right there I mean just to keep that speed off the base pass it's not just the pitcher it's other guys that have to think about it from your infielders have to think about that Runner potentially stealing but also be in position to make a play as an outfielder you're thinking about a base hit to the Outfield I got to get to it quickly to try to keep this guy from taking an extra base so I think everyone just a little more relaxed that he didn't reach base here comes the 01 and that's outside one out base is empty swings and misses at the pitch off the plate next offering [Music] upstairs one down base is empty foul ball another two two upcoming great swing and solid contact just a little too quick he's got to stay back a little longer spoils that one and it remains two and two eighth pitch of the ATB back coming up Fly ball pretty well struck right field that one back there that's not coming back the Red Sox Score first it's one nothing he kept swinging and it paid off well that was a battle boo and he just kept taking his Cuts finally squared one [Applause] up well he almost robbed the home run right there and I tell you what he'd love another crack at it during batting practice you always like to work on that and so close but that one was just out of his reach one down and next for the Red Sox Tristan casus that one is blasted left field towards the monster and it's off the out of town scoreboard throws to Second and that's a double put a really nice balanced swing on it and when you can rope one into the Gap like that you're thinking extra bases from the first couple of steps out of the box and he'll feel real good about that one manit second with one away and next is the designated hitter masataka Yoshida fast ball for a strike casus over at second one down [Applause] next offering is in for a strike man that pitch was dotted so much talent on display when this guy's out there on the hill and that one hammered Carol going back on this one the Run comes in from second it's two nothing it bangs off the wall relay throw to third in there safely stringing them together that's three hits in a row that can be a dangerous pitch if you don't get it inside enough because as a hitter you see it coming across the plate the whole way no problem handling it and putting a good swing on it that time runner at third with one gone and stepping in for Boston Trevor story fast ball for a strike one and one one away with a runner at third in for a strike and a count is 0 and two I understand you want to try to gauge that guy's fast ball but you also have to be aggressive and ready to hit in your zone now you're in a tough spot righty to the plate keeps the back going with a foul [Applause] ball got him swinging oh that's a curveball that I'm sure he wants back at the plate two strikes sort of pitch you're hoping for a bit of a mistake and I'd say in a very hitable location but clearly the break was enough to get him to swing through it so stepping in for Boston Willer aru that one finds the Zone strike [Applause] [Applause] one in there for a strike at the bottom of the Zone well I know they've gotten out to an early lead but you don't want to take these opportunities for granted with two outs still lock in with a quality at bat drive in that run you may not have another runner in scoring position the rest of this ball game hit hard on the ground to short pero on to First and that'll keep more runs from coming in inning over but two runs for them and they jump ahead on to the second from Fenway Park it's the Red Sox two and the Diamond Backs nothing back here at Fenway and now here's the veteran DH Jack Peterson well after scoring runs this is where you're looking for that shutdown inning get that hot team back in there to swing the bats petta back to work pulled down the line this one hammered but it's foul and the 01 lifted in the air right center field huls it in for the out now the catcher up to hit Gabrielle Moreno this guy one of the best defensive catchers going you talk about framing the ability to block catch and throw he is at the top of the game right through there for a strike really good athlete and many times we talk about you know the feat of infielders this catcher as well really quick feet he's able to recognize the pitch see the trajectory and get into a spot where he can block those balls and keep them from going to the back stop and a good eye there really impressive with the way he frames the way that he sets it up because sometimes those pitches are off the plate but because he sets up and presents it so well he still strikes for his pitcher still two and two after the foul ball one down base is empty in the air of the infield Des as this one sized up calls it in two away that was a good pitch to hit right down the heart of the plate had pretty good timing on it just got underneath it a little bit and popped it up two outs Bas is empty aeno Suarez up to hit now that one finds the Zone strike one and downstairs two down nobody on wouldn't chase that time Jack Swing went around it's two and two and the pitch and that one hammered out towards left field that one back there and it is gone way over the monster oh a massive home run and they're on the board it's 2-1 that could be one of those swings that really helped spark this offense knew what pitch he wanted to hit spit on some other pitches in this it bad was very patient and it paid off [Applause] Bas is empty with two away and stepping in is the Speedy Alec Thomas that misses the Zone one and0 righty delivers and it's fouled away the wi to kick the pitch good eye in that spot is there a little wrinkle to that I think there was yeah little slider action next offering is in for a strike and that just misses really good take especially with two strikes the Red Sox leading by a run here at the top of the second struck him out looking Diamondbacks draw a bit closer thanks to this home run and it's now a 2-1 ball game Major League Baseball is on the show bottom of the inning and stepping in for Boston Tyler O'Neal the wine of the pitch and there's the strike [Applause] ball one there Woody Keller making the calls behind home for us today and boo something to keep an eye on is how pitchers utilize the top part of the strike zone we see a lot more of that in today's game with pitchers going up there with hard stuff Keller definitely an Umpire that isn't afraid to call strikes up in that part of the strike zone there's the swing in a miss goes down looking now here is V Grom first pitch misses and here it comes and that's a little bit high now two and0 and a foul ball next offering is in for a strike swing and a miss struck him out here's the catcher Conor Wong just missed the one swings through that one for strike one and another ball way out front for strike two two outs that one ripped that's a base hit everything came together for him really good swing right there he got a pitch that he knew he could handle allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws so the Red Sox lineup turns over jiren Duran up next for the Red Sox feels like it's less common today that you see a guy like this the speed component the contact component but lack of power Gallen checks on the runner Wong back in on a dive I think baseball's starting to understand that those guys are valuable like they once were they need him in this game today and there's a foul ball Wong off of first with two [Applause] away and a foul ball o and two now way high his understanding the strike zone very impressive that was a very close O2 fast ball I just don't know how you take that that one off the mark and the count is two and two recognized that change up right out of the hand just spit on it foul ball left side he'll see another struck him out looking with the off speed Stu and the Red Sox leave one they lead it two1 back inside Fenway Park on to the third inning here's lordis guel Jr gel an Allstar a season ago 30 years old now and he was born in Cuba first pitch doesn't find the Zone in the air pretty deep out to Center Field Durant drifts towards it and there's one away next up for the Diamondbacks Heraldo Pomo a little bit high ball one right through there for a strike the one- one is fouled off here comes a pitch fouled off the plate they'll do it again that one way inside the Red Sox up by a run we're here in the top half of inning number three that one misses full countdown bounce to the left side and it goes just foul good job to fight that one off [Applause] one down base is empty foul we'll see another payoff pitch kicks Andi waves at the Bender for the strike out well that was perfect execution of that curveball down and in he gets it out of the danger zone and you really can't do it much better than that it's in the zone the entire way so you have to swing as a hitter but then just falls off the table and almost hits you in the back foot Carol batting for the second time and that's strike one well Chris through the early stages he hasn't been very efficient in terms of the pitch count he's going to need to get some quick outs if he's going to get deeper into this game next one in the dirt it is interesting though when you consider the way the game has run now doesn't even matter that much if your starter doesn't go that deep because well plays made there and that retires the side and the Diamond Backs down in order and our score remains [Applause] 2-1 back here at fedway except for the bottom of the third so stepping in for Boston grafeld Des and a pitch that's outside and that is ball one nowadays with Advanced metrics and increased use of moving the infielders around defense isn't necessarily about making errors are you able to get to the ball are you able to position fielders where guys hit the ball but within the new shift rules right-hander kick Steals and a strike to Des in an area that goes unnoticed is the coach that's responsible for positioning and then uh the research person that's providing the information so what we're seeing in baseball so many more people behind the scenes that are contributing to the success between the lines hit hard that gets through so a man on base to start the inning he was all over that one just a simple ground ball the other way they had eyes on it man sometimes that's all you need to do just let the ball travel put the ball in play and just hope it finds a hole now batting Tristan casus a double and a run scored his first time up hit on the ground might be two over to Second for one to Walker and that's two sometimes double plays get turned so quickly that you don't really get to appreciate all of the finer details and how these guys execute them right there really nice footwork and a good feed to Second was the key to pulling it off now here's the Red Sox DH masataka Yoshida check swing no appeal the pitch swings through that didn't recognize off speed thought it was fast ball little bit out in front and now two and one that Clips a corner two down dolman hard hit left side Suarez throw to first in time that is the inning and we're back as we go to the top of the fourth and now it's the switch inning second baseman Cel Marte as he turns on the Rubber and with that good live arm delivers hauls it in and there's one away well baseball can be cruel can it I mean sometimes it gives and sometimes it takes away he did everything right on that swing but he's got nothing to show for it and here's the first baseman Christian Walker he's over for one and that one is inside ball one the Red Sox leading by a run top half of inning number four check swing he went too far and it's a strike and the next pitch is way outside swings through that one it's a strike out Boi just ran out of patience there he took a couple of pitches to even that count off at two balls and two strikes but that time chased outside the zone here's Jack Peterson he's 0 for one swung on belted that one carrying and out of here that was blasted to the moon it's 22 he put a charge into that one that was a lightning swing right there no doubt about it a good hitter gets pitch recognition early he saw exactly where that was going to be the challenge not get over anxious and come out of your swing he stayed on it and got all of [Applause] it so two down and here's the catcher Gabrielle Moreno swing and a highfly ball down the right field line auu brings it in for the third out Dbacks get one on the solo Jack and we're deadlock now at two a piece back after this on the show back here in Boston John chabi and Chris Singleton with you and leading off the bottom of the fourth Trevor story and the right hter back to work and ball [Applause] one bounced to the right side Marte throws the first in time one out in the bottom of the four all I'm impressed with this guy's internal clock he knew he had plenty of time to take that extra step secure his grip on the baseball and make a strong accurate throw Willer Abu digs in now grounded out as first time up that misses and that's ball one [Applause] [Applause] one down base is [Applause] empty that's to Third and that's a base hit into left field one gone runner at first and next for the Red Sox Tyler O'Neal that's ripped and this one could be extra bases a br around second headed for third headed for the plate the relay he'll score and the Red Sox have the lead three to2 well done drives in the Run nice line drive to pull side met it out front but just stayed through it nice enough and ripped it into the Outfield [Applause] now it's the second baseman V Grom struck out swinging his first time just [Applause] missed the pitch and another ball next pitch in for a strike and a count to and one right through there for a strike love how vocal the Umpire is today no doubt in the hitter's mind catcher mind and even the pitcher mind as to the conviction in the call here's the two2 that one just misses that's a base hit into third now so Runners at the corners and one out everything came together perfectly for him right there just a solid swing right there caught it out front and ripped it into the outfield for the base hit those always feel great so one out with two aboard Conor Wong up next for the Red Sox one for one with a single so far and the first pitch misses for ball W well he's just given up three straight hits and now behind in this count to this hitter might be a good time for somebody to call timeout maybe the pitching coach go out there and talk to him just a little bit that pitch gets the inside corner and the count one and one and a swing in a Miss there big pitch right here he's going to try to make a pitch it's going to produce a strike out or a ground ball double play O'Neal at third Grom over at first with one away cuts and misses it's a strike out oh I'm not sure what he was waiting on right there he got the change up and still late on it you rarely see that it almost makes you think that he was trying to set the pitcher up I mean if you can't catch up to the off speed stuff there's no way you're going to touch a fast ball Duran in the Box again takes the [Applause] strike missed with a change up and it's one and one well the good thing so far is that he hasn't issued any free passes unfortunately they're making pretty good contact so not getting the swings and misses and making that Defense work behind him a little out front there as he swings through [Applause] it line drive and that should be extra bases one run is in Gren around third he'll score two runs are in it's 52 and he's into third with a two out triple picks himself up up a couple of ribbies a lot of hitters tell themselves line drive over the infielders head that's what I'm trying to do just keep that approach simple and right there it was perfectly executed on time with everything and pulled it into the Gap nicely man in scoring position with two away Des now he's already homered here in this one there's a [Applause] strike two outs and there's a ball swing and a ball lifted in the air left field pretty well struck guel drop step going back and it's off the green monster he's in safely at second a run comes in on the play and his hot hitting continues they kept him in the yard that time but all he's doing now is passing the Baton and everything seems to get started around this guy man at second here with two away Tristan casus up next for the Red Sox that misses the Zone ball one well they've been able to score four runs off of them in this inning and this is where you want to just max out get as much as you can give him one of those tough Innings where it's going to be hard for him to recover in the next one wouldn't chase that time well no need to go right at this guy first base is open he can hurt you so make him expand his Zone if he doesn't give him a walk 20 that Clips the corner and another [Applause] ball man on second two down 3-1 and he couldn't come up with it pretty easy walk right there last pitch wasn't even much to think about here comes the skipper and we're going to see a pitching change in this spot Zack Gallen done for the night and we'll be back with their first arm out of the pen after a quick break now on the mount for the Diamondbacks Luis Frio still pretty early in the ball game so this Bullpen has some work ahead of him best case scenario might be if he can come in here and get several quick outs kind of bridge the gap that starter left for him so two on with two away masataka Yoshida up next for the Red Sox one for two the Rope into right and that should be extra bases rounds third headed for the plate one run is in another comes in to score it's 82 now no waiting around right there he was ready to swing it on the first pitch nice line drive to the pul side right there but he didn't spin off of it that's the key you still have to extend through the baseball in order to hit a line drive like that here's Trevor story now first offering and it just misses the Red Sox up big in this one we're here in the bottom of the fourth next offering in there for a strike strike one man it's second swing and a miss 98 on the gun that one to first he takes it himself to the bag and that'll do it so a great inning there as they bat around to score six times to open up the lead on to the top of the fifth we go Red Sox eight and the Diamondbacks two back here at Fenway Park ready now for the fifth inning aeno Suarez up to the plate now well every pitcher wants run support and having a lead is nice but it can be challenging for some pitchers I think keeping the mindset to attack instead of trying to be too fine and have too much finesse go after hitters and get quick outs nabs it and a quick out number one woo he was all over that first pitch f ball just barely missed it man this guy was ready to hit Alec Thomas now he was a strikeout victim his first [Applause] time up and in and it's w and0 you know singy they talk about Red Sox Nation but there is something to that because the Boston Red Sox aren't just about Boston or Massachusetts it's that whole New England area so you're talking about Maine New Hampshire Vermont Northern Connecticut there's a whole segment of the country that is locked in on the Boston Red Sox pitch to pitch throughout the summer next offering is down low they travel really well and I think Red Sox fans are sprinkled all over the country foul ball now this is in the air down the line aru on his way over he makes the catch and there's two now maybe caught that one off the end just a little bit couldn't quite Barrel it up enough to really drive it two outs Bas is empty here's gurel that one is absolutely belted ofu raging back towards the wall and he brings it in on the warning track and welcome back to the ballpark ready to go for the last half of the inning now here is Willer Abu the right hander back to work and there's a strike good heater at 90 eight the Diamond Backs with some movement in the pen Ryan Thompson up and throwing for manager toy lello the L1 and he hits a ground ball right side over to first and that's the first out in the bottom of the fifth Tyler here's Tyler O'Neal there's the strike and a swinging a Miss well there's a certain point where you have to commit to what you think you see and he guessed wrong right there nasty slider with just terrific bite at the end the p in the air right field Thomas gets under it and makes the grab out number two V Grom now at the plate gr and first offering is fouled off two down nobody on strike two this guy's pounding the Zone hitters don't have time to think in between pitches that one way outside one and two the count rarely will you see a pitcher just a waste a pitch like that the batter wasn't even tempted to swing every pitch needs to have a purpose so that it can set up a following pitch to help you get that out knocks that one away and we'll do it again the Red Sox up big in this one last half of inning number five bals it off still one and two and the right-hander deals to third throws to First and that is the inning nothing doing for Boston they lead at 8-2 all right we go to the top half of inning number six stepping in is the switch inting shortstop peraldo Pomo hero measures 6' 2 in 24 years old and he was born in the Dominican Republic ripped to Third lead off man retired in the sixth Corbin Carol swings it now good power and he's homered off some really big names early in his career yeah boo his first home run was against UD Darvish he also got to Clayton Kershaw and Max Scherzer shortly after it's easy to gain confidence when you're having success against the biggest names in the sport and there's a rocket into the Outfield now he turns and heads for second the throw in in safely it's a double and his second hit anytime you rip a line drive the other way you feel really good about what you did at the plate you trusted your hands you let the ball travel and you took the barrel straight to it that's great work right there could be a chance here for them to start clawing back into this ball game one out runner at second catel Marte up to the [Applause] plate first pitch misses man it's second Pitch misses there and that's ball two [Applause] and a good eye there that one ripped right center field and that should be extra bases Runner scores from second as they get one back and it's 83 oh the throw is over his head that's a good sound coming off the bat man and as he connected out front ripped it into the Outfield that's one of those swings where you just don't even feel the ball hit the barrel that's a pure stroke so one gone with a runner at third at the batter now Christian Walker fast ball for a strike and it's O and one one away with a runner at third and we the top half of the [Applause] sixth that missed by a lot and the count is one and one double barreled action in the bullpen Brennan Bernardino the young Lefty looks to be getting himself ready Weiser also throwing just missed [Music] and a foul [Music] ball into Center and he makes the catch Runner tags from third the throws offline he's safe and it's 84 there you go nice little RBI there it's a graded bat got the job done and now Alex Cor is out of the Dugout and he will make a move for the bullpen Nick pavetta gives way and as he heads off we'll step aside for a minute back with a new pitcher after this break Greg Weiser gets the call from the pen he's into the game with the Bas is empty [Applause] two outs Bas is empty so next is the designated hitter for the Dbacks Jack Peterson he's already homered in this game first pitch just [Applause] misses at the belt and fires that's in for a strike at 95 and it's one and [Applause] one the one-1 is fouled off I'm just waiting for a foul ball up here I mean this is one of the best places to be ready and to have a foul ball opportunity we got a great and he got him strike three and that'll retire the side so they get a couple of runs on two hits no errors and no one left on 9-1 and two scheduled to hit in the home half of the sixth Red Sox eight and the Diamondbacks four bottom of the sixth inning and now it's the catcher for the Red Sox Conor Wong the pitch and first off ring is fouled off slider misses outside outside low two and one last couple of pitches breaking balls away I think he's going to have to come firm inside to be able to open up that location if he wants to go back there later in this count Line Drive caught man that's one of those at bats where you have to remind yourself it's about the process he did everything right right there nothing to show for it but in your mind you have to convince yourself that it was a very good at bat Duran batting with one down takes the strike man 91 on the slider right there that's a hard one that's a lowend fast ball for some pitchers one down base is empty strike two well at that velocity if that's all you're seeing 88 you can handle that all day long that's what you get in batting practice but off the velocity of the fast ball that is a very tough pitch to adjust to swings and misses and there's two Away really love the pitch sequence right there I'm telling you what pitcher and catcher on the same page right now now it's Des at the play he had a big swing for these guys way back in the first in yeah boo he didn't waste any time in this one the solo shot really got his team going and he's looking for more right [Applause] here just missed one close but called the ball and it's two and0 really close pitch down around the knees there and you could see him asking and where it missed probably doesn't agree but it appears he's ready to move on to the next pitch two outs swinging a foul straight [Applause] back two one now and Des hits that one and it's a one hopper Off the Wall should be extra bases now the tag at second and he's out trying for two bang bang play and the inning is over we go to the top of the seven now the dbac catcher Gabrielle Moreno and a pitch and that's off the Inside Edge and that's ball one the pitch in there for a strike at the top of the Zone well don't expect too many more High fast balls this a good Sinker ball pitcher and sometimes they can make mistakes trying to pitch Up In the Zone look for them to stay down around the knees to be effective the one- one is fouled off Andie [Applause] deals foul ball another two two upcoming this one high in the air to left Center O'Neal drifts towards it brings it in and there's a one away aeno Suarez stands in now for the diamond packs swing and a miss and that's strike one the Red Sox leading by four here in the top half of inning number seven one down base is empty and that one is inside [Applause] the punch out there and now to [Applause] gone two out space is empty next to hit for Arizona Alec Thomas swing in a Miss as he was late that time just a bit tardy there not sure if he had a hard time picking it up out of the hand or if he was sitting off speed that's off the mark and now it's even one and one the one- one is fouled off two down nobody on that one way inside [Applause] two outs Thomas checks his swing appeal down to Third and he held up leftand hitter Waits down to the dirt swing and a miss in time the two3 strikeout ends the inning back in Boston bottom of the seven and now here is Tristan casus the wi to the pitch and that's outside one and0 movement in the bullpen Ryan Thompson preparing to come on if needed and delivers outside there's a strike one strike left hand batter weights it's through for a hit so Runner aboard to start the inning well that was one of those high percentage Advantage counts where batting averages are just so much higher pretty tough for the infielders to do anything with that one he pulled it hard into the Outfield and even when you keep it on the ground it feels great when you hit a missile like that stepping in masataka Yoshida and first off ring is fouled off this one lifted in the air left field guel puts it away for the out and there's one down the batter number 10 short stop Trevor story Trevor story comes up to the plate 0 for three with two ground outs and a strikeout that one inside and that is ball one H he never moved cuz he never had time to with that kind of velocity you'd prefer that pitcher work away righty to the plate swing and a foul pushed off to the right some real good life going through the Zone on that one good eye in that spot man at first one [Applause] away base hit that was smoked through the infield they get it in quickly so first and second now one out well they call that an advantage count for a reason you're so much more likely to get something you can handle there's nothing cheap about the way he got that one through the infield that was ripped cut out in front and didn't get under it like he would have liked but definitely put a good swing on it a Bru in the box with one away as he takes ball one Runners at first and second with one gone here the bottom of the seven and that's how side two and0 could be some action here on this next pitch couple Runners on probably a challenge pitch coming and a foul ball makes the count two and one swings through that one for strike two [Applause] and another ball on the line base hit throw back in holds the runner at third base is now loaded only one away back to back singles I don't know how he's able to shoot that pitch the other way and still put something on it that pitch was inside and he let it get really deep so pretty incredible hands to fight it off and still get good wood on it one out base is loaded Tyler O'Neal getting ready to hit one for three right down the shoot it's own and one [Applause] and the righty deals fights it off you'll see another really great change of speeds he goes off the off speed to the fast ball and the hitter doesn't know what's coming next on the ground to First could be two over to Pomo that's one return throw to first got him double play and that'll do it just trying to sneak one through with the bases
