Congress has a lot of responsibilities but two primary obligations responsibly upon the government and make sure that our elections are free and fair and secure the pressure is on house Speaker Mike Johnson once again to pass a spending bill or more likely A continuing resolution by the end of the month or parts of the government will shut down October 1st with an election right around the corner shutting down the government is always a bad idea no matter what time of year it is leader Jeff the president and I will gladly and readily work with the speaker to keep the government open a sticking point for many Democrats is a GOP provision attached to the bill that requires proof of citizenship when people register to vote it's already illegal for non-citizens to vote but some conservatives are concerned migrants who've entered the country illegally will try to do so it's a story it's not true it's not fact when we actually look at the numbers we know that um that that this so-called idea of voter fraud is not real when you fill out the the federal card to to register to vote all you have to do is check a box promising that you're an American citizen it's the on the honor System we are wanting to make it more difficult not to vote but to cheat former president Donald Trump says Republicans should shut down the government if election security is not insured but a short-term spending bill that doesn't cut spending is a no-go for a handful of Republicans we can't keep doing it this way we're going a trillion dollars more in debt every hundred days lawmakers are trying to get this done quickly so they can get get back to their districts and campaign with many of their seats on the line This November in Washington Rebecca Caster Fox News
