you are locked on Giants postcast part of locked on Sports San Francisco on the locked on podcast Network your team every day yo what's up everyone and welcome back to the lock on Giants postcast I'm your host Eric Triple E Engle you may know me as the former producer for the murf and Mac Morning Show on kmbr and today the pulled out a win despite a shaky start from Blake Snell final score four to3 but Snell lasted just three innings in this one he had a hard time getting strikes over the plate he issued six walks in this outing and labored through the second inning which required 40 pitches just to get through that one inning the Giants turned to the bullpen in the fourth and they held it down big time only giving up one run over six Innings of work and Camilo doval made his return it was somewhat of a mixed bag but he got outs when he needed to and looks have regained some confidence on the mound definitely does not look like the guy who was one of the All-Star best closers in the League last year but looks to be getting some of that form back we'll break it all down but first I want to thank all of you for watching us on the lock on Sports San Francisco YouTube Channel please hit that subscribe button thanks also for listening on the lock on Giants podcast feed however you get in the show we appreciate it make sure to check out the lock on Giants Daily Show for more in-depth coverage Ben kaspik does a great job Today's show has brought to you bu supplyhouse.com supplyhouse.com is the reliable way to get parts fast shop for your next Plumbing HVAC or electrical job and get fast shipping from coast to coast at supplyhouse.com as I said Giants uh kind of got out to a decent start despite Blake sell's shaky shakiness on the mound I mean the offense was okay today I mean they they generated four runs uh had a lot of hits in this one collected 11 hits but again again with runners in scoring position situational at bats were really bad two for 13 in those instances but early in the in this one in the top of the first the Giants did get a run with some productive outs so after Fitzgerald let off with a single Ramos gets hit by a pitch and conforto walks to load the bases with one out Matt Chapman hits one down the left field line and this one looked like it was headed for at for a double I mean probably a basis clearing double if that one kicks by a Rosara maybe even more for Chapman because Arena because Ros Arena lays Out full Superman to try and this grab and he does looked a little banged up on the play but stayed in the game goes down as a sack fly because there was one run or one out when Chapman hit this lowline drive down the down the left field line great great great play by Randy Ros Arena limits the Giants are scoring just one run in that inning Mike isky comes out and lines out to Short Stop to end the inning Giants only get one run despite having the bases loaded with just one out then in the bottom of the first Snell from the jump didn't look sharp he didn't look like second half Lake Snell today he was he was just missing all those uh all the pitches that he was trying to get on the corners he just wasn't getting and the command was just off enough that any pitch that he was starting inside the strike zone and trying to tail out of the strike zone just wasn't that close they were easy takes and and he you know walked Julio Rodriguez in that first inning but did get through it without much more damage then in the top of the second the Giants get another run after a Tyro single a grant McCrae single and then Tyler Fitzgerald singles to score Tyro Estrada Giants take a two to nothing lead and then they didn't score anymore in the inning but I thought it was pretty interesting that they executed a double steal with McCrae and and Fitzgerald in that inning put Runners at second and third with just one out uh this is the team that is last in Major League Baseball in steals by the way so interesting to see them start doing this more they've done this a lot more in the second half than they did in the first half of the season and I've said this on the show plenty of times I think Grant McCrae as a new dimension and when you get Grant McCrae and Tyler Fitzgerald on the base paths together or or one right after the other it really helps keep the pressure on the opposing defense and the opposing pitcher and makes life hard for them when you're having to worry about that runner at first having some speed and you're also trying to worry about getting that ball to the plate you're maybe going to rush your delivery a little bit so this speed can definitely affect things in a lot more ways than just stealing bases I think Grant McCrae adds that to this team and Tyler Fitzgerald certainly is getting better at stealing bags as well this is a guy who has top top top tier speed Elite level speed uh for in all of Major League Baseball and he just doesn't have that many stolen bases to match the type of wheels that he's got so the Giants obviously are having Fitzgerald look for these situations more and he's he's running and he's been pretty good at stealing bags lately been getting a lot better jumps as of late so I do like this added dimension for the Giants off although they weren't able to score in that g in that inning after that first run despite having Runners at second and third with one out Wade junor and Ramos both fly out Wade didn't get it deep enough to score McCrae on a sack fly the ending ends we go to the second inning in the bottom of the second a 40 pitch inning for Blake Snell felt like it took like an hour plus just to get to this point of the game this game dragged on very very long it felt like that 40 pitch inning was tough he walked the bases loaded and then walked in not one but two runs in the inning then he struck out Justin Turner to get out of it it was just a really really really weird inning for Snell he looked I mean baguer out there like his his his demeanor was not good I mean he's hanging his head he's clearly frustrated he looked like he was gassed man just I mean it's a cold day up there in Seattle don't tell that to Blake Snell because that dude looked like he just jumped out of a pool he was sweating so much he did get out of that inning then in the top of the third the Giants had another opportunity to get runners in score a runner in scoring position with less than two outs with Chapman at second base after Mike Esty single and Chapman single to earlier in the inning but then two line outs Tyro and McCrae both line out don't Advance the runner don't get a run in they gota be better at small ball execution the Giants just don't even seem like they're trying in a lot of these situations to play small ball they're just up there free swinging and I get it's early in the game but in a 2-2 game especially coming off the what happened last night where the the Mariners just rally back for what like five runs late in the game to put you away I think you got to score some runs however you can and I think the Giants absolutely need to start playing small ball more the base stealing is great now we just got to get some productive outs maybe someone who knows how to lay down a bunt or two and and just keep playing small ball man because this team living and dying by the Home Run is not going to get you where you want to go we've seen that this season it's been on display please for the love of God learn how to have better situational at bats then in the bottom of the third Snell comes in and like completely flip the switch this guy looks like a new man like Born Again first two innings were first half lak Snell second inning or third inning was second half Blakes now this guy one two three completely flipped the switch and looked like the guy that he's been in his last few starts truly one of his most dominant Innings he struck out a Ros Arena and hanigar got palanco to ground out on a jam shot and I mean go into your fridge right now pull out your jar of jam look at it and and that is less Jam than than panco got jammed on this play I mean that I've never seen a guy get jammed so badly without breaking his Bat I mean that was just I mean panco didn't even really run down first base I'm assuming that must have hurt like hell coming off the hands I mean I would almost rather strike out in that situation to find panco just because that was just such a terrible hit I don't even know how you uh like that's that's one of those where you're looking at the bat as you're going back to the dug on you're like I'm not using this one next time I'm grab I'm grabbing the next the other one so a nice inning for Snell but after that 40 pitch second inning he was truly gassed I mean you you have more than like a a couple 20 plus pitch Innings and it it's your stamina goes down really quick as a pitcher uh go go higher than 30 pitches in one inning and you are almost guaranteed to be I mean maybe you got one more inning left in you but you're pretty much done for the day after you throw 40 pitch in one inning takes a lot out of you to be on the mound for that long throw that many pitches Snell's final line he threw 74 pitches 42 of them were strikes so a little bit better than Hayden bird song the other night as far as the balls and Strikes go but this felt very very very similar to Hayden Birdsong start when he just couldn't find find the strike zone either so Snell for his final slash line goes three Innings doesn't give up a hit but still gives up two runs walked six guys five strikeouts for Snell as well erra now sits at 376 which is not bad I mean better than a lot of other giant starters on this staff at this point in the season and it's amazing that this guy had an erra like over 12 earlier this year and now it's all the way down to three it wasn't like one game gave him that like crooked number ra I mean he worked up to that with several terrible outings and so that tells you at this point in the season Blakes had far more good outings than he's had bad in this one it's kind of a mixed bag of both it it wasn't a by any means a good start I mean three Innings is not something you can qualify as a good start doesn't even qualify as as a quality start if you remember that quality start stat but he uh I mean he doesn't really give up too much damage doesn't give up a hit in the process so he had the swing and Miss stuff he just couldn't get it over the plate had a really tough time with his control and his return to his hometown team I mean he grew up grew up up in the Pacific Northwest rooting for the Seattle Mariners he uh I mean he's a Seattle guy and he he fits the vibe up there very well it's very similar obviously to the vibe here in San Francisco I don't know why this was uh I thought this was set up to be a nice homecoming for him I thought he was going to be comfortable with predictably some friends and family in the audience and he just looked bad I mean he looked shaky no control but but the pitches were electric and I mean it was a it was a mixbag from him today somehow only limits the Mariners to just two runs you get six walks and you only get two two runs out of it in a three-inning span that is rough for the Mariners offense uh the in the fourth inning Biven comes in for Snell uh and Biven was out there for a little while he he pitched pretty well for a few innings in this one Biven went just as long as Blake Snell did and he only gave up two hits had two strikeouts didn't walk anybody and didn't give up any runs he gets credit for the win today Spencer Biven does and that erra for Biven is looking pretty nice 251 erra and yeah he did come in the other day give up the game in a a situation where I didn't think that the giant should have turned to him in in such a high leverage situation but nonetheless he he comes back responds today with a pretty good outing and and then the AR roara continued to make really nice plays in the Outfield bottom five uh AR roara ends up doubling with two outs to just stay hot in this one but he made a leaping catch at the wall in the top of the fifth uh the right before the Giants ended up actually scoring another run Mike yky with a two out double and Tyro Estrada slaps the single to score Mike Arky a two out rally I mean I get two only two hits but we're going to call it a rally because that's a rally for this Giants team I mean that's that's a big deal asking them to to score a run with two outs on something other than a solo home run that's something that this team seems to not be able to do they do it here gives the Giants a three to2 lead then in the bottom of the fifth that's when a Rosara smacked that double with two outs but Biven got out of it then after Spencer Biven was done in comes Jordan Hicks he only lasts two-thirds of an inning can't get out of it ends up loading the bases walks a couple guys almost got out of it without a run but and uh Rosara smacks a a ground ball to short the Giants try to roll two it he the Rosara called out at first on the field they got the guy at second clearly but it was a bang bang play over at first base and on replay review he is ruled safe therefore the run from third is able to score and the Mariners tie the game back up at three runs a piece so the Giants uh they they excuse me before that happened uh Mikey in the prior frame smacked a solo home run so the Giants were forwarded to brought the Mariners within just one run it was the 10th uh home run of the season for y just only three home or three parks that would have been a home run in all of baseball at T-Mobile Park up in Seattle obviously and Yankee Stadium in minute made par anywhere else that ball would not have gone out there in the top of the seventh then Hicks came in in the bottom of the seventh that's when he gave up that run on the overturned double play call then in comes Camilo doval makes his triumphant return from Triple A he had a decent stretch down there he he had a couple appearances his last three appearances in Triple A went very well didn't give up a run he three three shutdown outings in those last three U appearance is in Triple A he appeared four total times and he looked better today than the last time we saw him I mean it wasn't hard for him to be much worse than the last time we saw him but came in with Runners at the corners and two outs and the Mariners were threatening issues a four- pitch walk to the first batter and I think everyone Collective collectively took a deep breath thinking oh no this is what's gonna just be this guy's demeanor is now he's just going to come out here and fall apart every single time then the next batter comes up throws two more balls before finally getting a strike over the plate then immediately gets a ground ball to end the inning uh Giants didn't score at all later at the end of this game but dval comes back out in the bottom of the eighth gets the lead off batter to fly out on a deep Fly ball to right field then Strikes Out Cal Raleigh on a high cheddar fast ball got big dumper swinging there and that looked like the Camilo doval of old to me in that strikeout then next batter comes up facing the number n hitter Rivas Works another full count but ends up striking him out ending that inning with back-to-back strikeouts was a big moment for Camilo doval this will do a lot for this guy's confidence I mean we know that he's got the stuff that is not the question camil Deval is absolutely talented enough to be one of the best closers in Major League Baseball it's all mental it's all right here in the head with Camilo he's got to do a better job at at keeping himself calm keeping himself I mean locked in on these in these games and not not getting too down on himself I mean you can see the emotion all over his face and that's something that we didn't see a lot from him early in his career I mean tranquilo Camilo he looked super calm most of the time it's almost like you can see the storm brewing now when you're looking at him out there on the hill Ryan Walker comes in for the ninth inning I thought he was going to be unavailable today thought he was absolutely not going to pitch based on how much he's been out recently pitched two innings the other day he comes in strik out the first batter Strikes Out Randy Rodriguez in the second at bat of that inning and then gets a Rand Randy AOS Arena to ground out to Tyler fitzgeral to end the game Justin Turner did slap a single before that ground out to end the game and the Giants go home squeak out a four to3 win H well go home to their temporary homes wherever the hotel in Seattle is that they're staying at got one more in Seattle up there at T-Mobile Park which by the way I love that Stadium I I really wanted go see a game out there the the the Dome that's not really a dome like it's got a retractable roof that will close when it's raining but you'll still get the wind coming in from the sides that stadium looks really cool man really want to get out there it just seems like a Vibe just seems like a Vibe one of the uh cooler new I guess new stadiums New Age stadiums I know it's not that new but it's not a it's not like Fenway or wriggle field old but I I like T-Mobile it seems like a fun place to go but Giants having a lot of fun out at T-Mobile with the win they go to 66 and 65 on the season and Brian Walker picks up another save his third save of the season and doval gets a hold not bad I mean weird to see them switch but right now I don't think there's any question in anybody's mind especially when you see the ju position of both guys pitching in the same game Ryan Walker is the guy in the ninth right now and I don't think that uh Camilo Deval can really do much to take that back if Ryan Walker keeps pitching how he's been pitching because he just is an unhitable strikeout machine right now this guy stuff is absolutely filthy that slider is just unhitable just absolutely unhitable and for to have the same arm slot as that fastball that he's got I I don't even know how you uh guess right up there I mean you're just guessing as the hitter and if you guess right maybe you'll run into one but I mean wow wow Ryan Walker looking phenomenal out there for the Giants the Giants I guess eeking closer back into Wild Card contention although as I've said repeatedly I don't think they really have a realistic shot at making the playoffs anymore this season we didn't talk really much about Mike Arky at all we mentioned some of the some of the heroics he had but yes had a really great day at the dish let's take a quick break here on the locked on Giants postcast and on the other side we'll go over Mike yy's nice day at the plate three hits for you today stick with us on the lock on Giants postcast I'm your host Eric Triple E Engle we'll be right back today's show is with a 4 to3 win over the Mariners out there in Seattle and it was a it was a a rough day by the by the starting pitching by by Blake Snell rocky rocky day shocked he didn't give up more than two runs in his three Innings with his six walks but the Giants are able to to do enough at the dish to get a win here I'm not I don't know if I can qualify this as a good day at the dish because they left 11 Runners on Pace and went just two for 13 with runners in scoring position that's not very good but Mikey did I mean he was doing the most down uh down in the sixth hole for the Giants today he I mean he had five at bats scored two runs had three hits and had an RBI as well H he had that key two-out double before Tyro Estrada singled to score him he also had a very important solo home run without both of these plays the Giants lose this game Mike gsky also laid down a bunt for a single in this one it was kind of inconsequential but if as long as we're ripping the Giants for not being able to do small ball stuff I think we got to acknowledge it when it happens Mike isky I mean the other day we saw him trying and lay down a bunt and pop up in foul ground and and fly out to the catcher while trying to lay down a bunt that's not what you want to do here he lays the bunt down it was a good enough bunt that he bunted himself on board it was a single is just trying to get the runner Advanced on the play but it ends up being a base hit for Mike yky those three hits was a triple shy of the cycle one of those hits being an infield single so a good day at the dish for Yas spat in 242 this season but I just wish that this could be more consistent and I I I find myself wishing for that not just with yky but with conforto I mean with with I mean Chapman there's so many guys on this team that are hovering right around like I mean they look nearly identical statistically trapman's got the got the Home Run numbers yeah I get that and he's also got a bunch of steals and doubles so Chapman's been at least getting extra base hits when he hits the ball Mike kmky did a good job today of uh of generating some offense for the Giants I mean two of these Giants runs half of the Giants runs today were I mean Mike gky was at this epicenter of scoring both of those so the Giants a uh a decent win today over the Mariners I mean you you squeak out a four to3 win would have really been nice to come up with just one or two more hits with runners in scoring position but they were completely unable to do that I I this this team is just tough to watch it's frustrating and I feel like I say the same thing on all of these shows even when they win it's still like I'm I'm leaving this game feeling frustrated it's like there's so much more meat on the bone for this Giants team when you leave this many Runners on base when you have this many opportunities to score and you continuously come up short even when you eek out a win a one-run win it doesn't feel very good it doesn't feel like this team like won this game it feels more like the Mariners lost it and I want to feel like the Giants are winning games I don't want to feel like they're like like they need the other team to to help them out to get a win the Giants gave the Mariners nine base runners for free today nine nine Walks from the Giants today the Mariners they they did the the Giants a huge favor by striking out 12 times and I know the Giants pitchers are obviously getting those strikeouts too it's not like they're just you know swinging at at you know 70 M hour meatballs down the middle and intentionally swinging and missing the the Giants pitchers are out there trying to get outs they weren't doing a very good job of it though I mean if the Mariners had just stood there and not swung in a lot of these at bats they would have gotten even more free passes the to to draw nine walks and not score I mean more than just a couple runs off of these threee base runners is a very tough way to lose for the Seattle Mariners and again it feels like the Mariners lost this game it doesn't feel like the Giants won they they got themselves into trouble constantly despite the bullpen you know doing a decent job in today's game I mean they went six Innings of work they only gave up one run it came from that uh that Jordan Hicks inning where the uh Randy Rosara ground ball that was originally ruled a double play on the field was overturned and that run scored it's it's frustrating I just want to see this team win games I want to see this team be good again they have all the components of a good baseball team you have a great starting pitching staff you have I mean the bullpen has been just so dominant in this month of August I mean one of the best bull pins in the entire league they're eighth in erra for the month of August that's probably going to go down after what they did today and I mean this was uh they were they were fourth in erra in July so this Bullpen really turned a corner last month go figure it was when they stopped having to throw a bullpen game every three days and they've been playing a lot a lot a lot better but today they do a good enough job to win offense just enough runs to to give the bullpen enough of a breathing room to so that one run was was you know they gave him one Insurance run and and that was you know essential essential that Mike Arky solo shot ended up being a huge huge moment of this game and just think if the Giants were playing at home this this might have gone entirely different because that Mike Arky home run would not have been a home run at Oracle Park so the Giants get a little lucky with the uh the the little short porch that they got out there in T-Mobile Park and Mike arky's line drive his H 346 foot home run ends up being a bomb and it's uh it's the difference in this one as the Giants win four to three we got to take a quick break here and one more uh one more thing to go over I want to talk a little bit more about doval and and why he's had so many issues this year with uh just just base runners in general have been tough for him let's go over it a little bit on on the other side put a bow on this show wrap up this locked on Giants postcast I'm your host Eric Triple E Engle we'll be right back and Today's Show is sponsored by tonel when life gets busy fitting in a workout can be stressful with lock on Giants postcast I'm your host Eric Triple E Engel and today the Giants 4 to3 win over the Seattle Mariners doesn't really feel as much like a Giants win as much as it feels like they escaped this one and the Mariners beat themselves at the untimely strikeouts for the Mariners where all they needed were uh Ju Ju Just to get some productive outs and feel very giant e on the Seattle Mariners offense today it was just a battle of uh who who was gonna you know screw this up the least with runners in scoring position the Giants were able to screw it up the least because the Mariners didn't get any hits with runners in scoring position today over five and they left 10 Runners on base so neither team was really good in these situations um Giants ended up being just good enough to win this game huge story today coming out of this one though was Camilo doal his big return this guy has been a head case all season long after coming out last season and just having one of the best seasons that we've seen a Giants closer have in quite some time I mean hearken back to the days of like of of Sergio Romo and Brian Wilson and I mean if you want to go back even further like Rob nen but more more recently he's looked like a different Giants closer he's looked like Armando bonitz out there and if you guys remember Armando bonitz like I do this man haunted my childhood with how awful he was on that mound and he had great stuff too just a massive head case who couldn't throw strikes sometimes and Deval seems to be like he has a little bit of that Armando bitez Gene in him which is just the last statement I think every Giants fan wants to hear but if he can manage to somehow get these walks under control he will be so much better as a pitcher I mean some of these misses are just not close he's in the bottom 2% in walk rate in in for all pitchers Major League Baseball he's giving up walks at a 14.3% rate I mean that's that's way too high way way way too high and today you saw him come out issue a four- pitch walk to that first batter second batter throws two balls that aren't close before he finally gets one over the plate for a strike I think he's got to stop trying to be so perfect I think he's got to stop trying to make the perfect pitch and he's just got to get his stuff over the over the plate he he can give up some hard contact yeah I mean he he loves that high fast ball and when guys catch up to it it'll sail especially when he's got a 100 plus mile hour fastball that he's serving up out there and when he hangs a slider that thing can Sail on him too I mean that that slider is also pretty quick 90 plus miles an hour with that slider so when it comes in just hanging it's it's a meatball it's it's basically on a te right there and with that pitch velocity it's going to jump off that bat a little bit faster go a little bit further he's gonna give up some hard contact but he's going to miss bats a lot more than he's going to hit them so I need Camilo Deval to stop trying to make the perfect pitch I need him to just go out there and throw I just need him to go out there and and and and be Camilo doval like this guy has never really been like the the most accurate dude like you're just afraid of where he of of where he's gonna throw the ball because the that cutter high and in to uh to lefties especially I mean I don't know how you hit that pitch when he's got that working that slider to righties when that thing is on it's it just disappears falls off the table and the fastball is really hard to catch up it's 100 plus miles an hour I mean today's baseball well hitters are adapted for that but it's still really tough to hit it's not like it's an easy task for hitters that's why you see all these closers that that can throw 100 plus I mean look at Ben joy down in Anaheim that guy's been crazy to watch with the 105 M hour heaters in like Mason Miller over in Oakland too bad both of these guys are on really terrible teams and we don't get to see them in the roles that we should be seeing them in Camilo doval I don't think he's going to regain this closer role for the Giants I really don't but he could be the best setup man in all of baseball and with the way that Ryan Walker's pitching in the ninth inning right now this back end of the of the rotation of the uh of the bullpen could be I mean top tier in all of baseball all these really nice components yet the Giants still find themselves outside of this playoff race I mean the Braves I'm looking right now are losing to the Washington Nationals they're uh they're trailing as uh at the time that we're recording this podcast it's uh what time is it right now it's it's 5 o'clock on on Saturday so as of right now the Braves are trailing by two runs you need the Braves to completely collapse though if you're going to want to overtake them it's not just going to be one or two losses to uh that are kind of surprising losses to bad teams you're going to need this team to entirely collapse you're also going to need to somehow past the Mets and you're going to need to hold off the the Cardinals and the Reds and all these other teams that are catching up to the Giants as well the Cubs in the mix too I I just don't see a path for the Giants to get to the playoffs they they play a lot of really good baseball teams going down the stretch they don't play any team below 500 except for the Mariners and I I I don't know if the Cardinals are currently at 500 right now or what their exact record is I know they're sitting right around it they're currently losing to the twins the Cardinals are 4 to zero so they are uh in the bottom of the third so they're I mean they they're right there with the Giants I mean both of these teams seem very very very flawed I don't think either makes the playoffs I think it's going to come down to the or the Braves and I really do think the Braves are going to outlast the Mets so and it's it's the expanded playoffs too so if you can't make the playoffs with the expanded playoffs you really don't deserve it this Giants team does not deserve to make the playoffs despite the win today does not feel like a Giant's win feels more
