WEDNESDAY MORNING. METEOROLOGIST JEREMY WHEELER WILL HAVE YOUR FULL FORECAST IN ABOUT 10 MINUTES. BUT FIRST WE HAVE DEVELOPING NEWS ON A DEADLY SHOOTING. WE BROUGHT YESTERDAY AS BREAKING NEWS. THAT'S RIGHT. A 15 YEAR-OLD MENCHVILLE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT WAS SHOT AND KILLED AT HIS SCHOOL BUS STOP YESTERDAY MORNING IN NEWPORT NEWS 10 ON YOUR SIDE'S RAVEN. PAYNE JOINS US NOW WITH HOW THE COMMUNITY IS REACTING TO THIS TRAGEDY. RAVEN. YES, WELL, CHIEF STEVE DREW JUST LEFT THE NEIGHBORHOOD A COUPLE OF MINUTES AGO. EARLIER, HE WAS JOINED BY MAYOR PHILIP JONES AND THE NEWPORT NEWS FIRE CHIEF. BUT HE WAS THE LAST CITY OFFICIAL TO BE LEFT IN THIS NEIGHBORHOOD WHO WAS WAITING WITH KIDS AS THEY WERE WAITING FOR THEIR BUS, MAKING SURE THEY SAFELY GOT ON THAT BUS ON THE WAY TO SCHOOL. HE SHOWING THIS COMMUNITY. >> HIS COMMITMENT THE POLICE DEPARTMENT'S COMMITMENT TO MAKING SURE THEIR KIDS ARE SAFE, ESPECIALLY AFTER YESTERDAY'S TRAGEDY YESTERDAY MORNING JUST BEFORE 6.20, NEWPORT AS POLICE RESPONDED TO A SHOTSPOTTER ACTIVATION AT THE INTERSECTION OF 16TH STREET AND GARDEN DRIVE. THAT'S WHERE KIDS WERE WAITING AT A BUS STOP TO HEAD TO MENCHVILLE HIGH SCHOOL ONCE THEY ARRIVED, THEY FOUND A 15 YEAR-OLD BOY SUFFERING FROM A LIFE-THREATENING GUNSHOT WOUND. HE WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL WHERE HE DIED FROM HIS INJURIES. CITY OFFICIALS WERE QUICK TO PUT OUT STATEMENT IN RESPONSE AND QUICK TO COME OUT TO THIS NEIGHBORHOOD TO SHOW THE COMMUNITY. THEY'RE THERE FOR THEM. I SPOKE WITH MAYOR PHILIP JONES AND CHIEF STEVE DREW EARLIER THIS MORNING. HERE'S WHAT THEY HAD TO SAY. >> MOST IMPORTANT THING THAT WE CAN DO FOR OUR COMMUNITIES TO BE VISIBLE TO TAKE CARE OF OUR KIDS. SO WE JUST IT FAVOR A FUSS. WE HAVE. SHE WAS DOING, YOU KNOW, THAT'S THE FIRST THING THE KIDS SEE WHEN THEY GET ON THE SCHOOL BUS WORDS HERE TO SUPPORT THEM HERE THIS MORNING. >> AND CHIEF, WE'RE SEEING A PRETTY LARGE RESPONSE HERE AFTER THE SHOOTING CAN RUN THROUGH NO, I JUST THINK THE MAYOR SET THE TONE OF THIS IS A GREAT COMMUNITY. IT'S A STRONG COMMUNITY. WE WANT TO PEOPLE OUT HERE. CITY RESOURCES RIGHT THE CARES TEAM OF PEOPLE FROM THE FIRE DEPARTMENT POLICE OFFICERS, THE MAYOR HERE WE GET TO WALK TO THE NEIGHBOR, TALKED TO SOME CITIZENS THIS MORNING. MEAN, THE BUS DRIVER JUST CHECK ON THEM. I THINK I THINK THAT'S IMPORTANT. AND I THINK THE RESPECTS. >> AESIA TOLIVER: AND CHIEF DREW TELLS ME THEY CAN'T RELEASE ANY SUSPECT INFORMATION RIGHT NOW.
