it's so good to be here in South Carolina we can accomplish everything here at this University here it is the best opening in college football Dynamite touchdown South Carolina I'm on the and you can feel the energy in the stadium how we doing good welcome back well the Gamecocks get 14 of their 23 points off of four turnovers on the night two of which were inside the Old Dominion 10 yd line they go on to beat the monarchs 23-19 to go to 1 and0 on the season coach a Sun Belt opponent people have high expectations of what you might do I know you're kind of uh bent between your one and0 but a lot of things to improve on I'm sure you saw in the ball game no pleased to be one and0 our players proud of the way they maintained their Poise tonight when things were going against us and it wasn't pretty uh found a way to win it in the fourth quarter offense defense special teams had each other's backs without a doubt we knew this was a quality team coming in here and they certainly had our respect and uh you know had a great week of practice so disappointed with the way we performed and we were inconsistent in all three areas but having said that it's a win uh we're going to be a team that continues to get better each and every week and there's going to be a lot to correct from this game obviously but we're I'm glad that we're correcting it one and0 and and not the other way rocket Sanders look good rushing the football other players who had not contributed in the past had made plays sellers made some plays on the ground the glaring thing coach though is that we were at 46% or so and passing on the night a lot of new receivers your thoughts overall on how we can get better at that what was your impression of the passing game just uh off you know and everyone had a hand in it coaches uh players you know I'm sure L Norris will tell you there's some throws that he missed on we had drops uh at the tight end position drops at the wide receiver position we had some protection issues at times so um you know we we we will we played a lot of new players tonight there were a lot of receivers playing their first game ever as a gamec true freshman a lot of guys that weren't even here for spring practice having said that we need to perform better in the passing game than what we did tonight no question in my mind we will we'll get back to work on Sunday and and have a great week of practice and continue to improve uh in the passing game cuz we're not it wasn't pretty tonight but we're not that far off I don't believe on a 92 degree day uh opener for the season and the weather delay because of the lightning it was not uncommon to see players come in and out maybe cramping there were some injuries at least took players off the field but what I saw is almost all of them got back yeah on our Prisma Health injury report can you give us an update yeah I think we're in good shape first of all kudos to our players and our training staff strength and strength and conditioning staff nutrition team for uh us not having issues with cramping out there you know I mean we played a lot of plays and certainly was hot as heck but we didn't have cramping issues we had a couple minor injury got things that guys came out with Dylan stor I think he was more tired than anything at the end of the game um Josiah Thompson had a little bit of a you know got poked in the eye early and it took him a little bit to come back from that and then Jared Brown got hurt and but ended up being clear to return so I think we came out of it in pretty good shape well SEC play starts next week so we'll need all those guys we got much more to come including highlights from Williams sprice Stadium at the 2024 opener we'll be back on Gamecock football with Coach to be at Williams price stadium for openers coaching on a 90 2 three degree day really great crowd even particularly before the weather got in all with the lightning delay uh never ceases to amaze me I think I heard 17,500 students had pickup maybe the largest ever yeah no it was awesome kudos to the cockpit for the student section today I told a lot of those recruits before the game what a statement our fans made will make today I told them this before the game and they did that it's hot it's an afternoon kickoff uh it's a non SEC opponent and this place was sold out in rocking so appreciate our fans so much it Gamecock walk was awesome it was amazing getting able being able to run out of the tunnel the Tommy Suggs tunnel uh to 2001 for the first time as well and and we were excited about playing and and uh got off to a great start let's go out to Willie be now for first half highlights Gamecocks won the toss deferred to the second half yep kicked off wanted to get our defense out there nice job coming in there flying around to the ball making a tackle inside the 20 yard line as well good to see Demetrius Knight new transfer for us uh getting out there in the flat to make a play and then got started early you know great job we knew they were going to have a hard time blocking our guys up front what a way to start on that first possession to create a takeaway and anytime you can start on the one on the two or three yard line got a chance to be successful so good to uh you know be able to punch this thing in on uh uh and go up 7 nothing there early as well you know here we are locked us up pretty good disappointing I mean we uh we busted the coverage right here they lined up in empty and we didn't adust quite like we needed to we should have had a safety in the middle of the field and uh we've got to be better there we can't give up explosives and and we good good news is we got that corrected how about rocket Sanders uh he's a he's a load to bring down excited about seeing him out there tonight and the way that he ran the football as well and then Lenoris brings an element to the Run game also great to see him right there also with an explosive run to get us into plus territory fourth down and one we go for the thing great extra effort right there by rocket to to get the first down then we get down here on third down have a little concept where uh you know we got a little post route corner route and didn't uh pick it up quite like we needed to but nice to see Alex Herrera come in and hit his first uh field goal was the starting kicker for us also they popped this run out of here good job right there by our guys getting in on the ground and and preventing more held them they punt it back to us we're back here on our 15 yard line as well drop back to pass Lenora Lenoris improvising little over uh over his head right there as well but defense third and 11 got another stop force uh as well here a little Zone re type action need to do a better job that was a disappointing thing tonight to we didn't do a great job of blocking on the perimeter uh in the Run game we've got to be better there here you know that was a pressure we knew they were going to run and and didn't handle it clearly obviously and it's not always on the offensive line we need to be better about recognizing that look and getting us in the right protection but great job our defense right there getting a stop you know here's to me is is is we talk about having each other's backs and complimentary football what an effort by Nick Harbor to run this guy down and get him out of bounds make the defense make the off defense put the ball down that's our Mantra on defense and then create a turnover you know so it's both phases having each other's backs we can't have the turnover but Nick gets him on the ground allows our defense to go make a play as uh as well you know Juju pops this thing out of here I think lenorris ends up tackling him on uh this one lightning delay came right in after that and and proud of the way our guys handled the delay we came back out here wanted to make something happen get a little drive going as um as well not able to get anything out of it right there so now we're almost to a Hal time again great pressure by our defensive line getting around that quarterback they try and pop a screen out here which we knew they were going to do we needed to be great on the perimeter and handle their screen game and perimeter throws and um and we did you know here they uh worried about protection a little bit so they bring those Gunners in thought Juju mcdal did a nice job tonight his first game as our punt returner getting positive yardage and now we're in business we're on the 40 yard line uh going in we get to a situation where we're first and 10 right here good handing the ball to Jared Brown a transfer from coost Carolina brings a speed element to our offense and playmaking ability as well and get down here on fourth down and obviously faked it on the play before and scored a touchdown but came back because of a penalty but proud of Alex responding and coming back through there and banging that thing through for uh for three points also great job by the defense right there called a timeout tried to get the ball you know make something happen and they did a good job of holding us right there we ran out the clock going into halftime up 13 to 7 yeah coach defense and the area which they got those turnovers was the story in the first half five sacks overall two turnovers and you talking about one of those was in the end zone after they were driving and Donald Fortune going back there to make it so opportunistic defense that helped your offense and also saved another score yeah no question and then I thought all three faces just did a good job overall tonight or today of just having each other's backs and when the offense gave up a play and didn't perform the defense stepped up and the special teams did the defense stepped up and the defense didn't perform right the offense Had Each Other's backs and and that's good good team football no doubt we got ourselves a ball game it's 13-7 at halftime let's go back out to Williams sprice stadium for second half highlights yeah it challenged our offense at the half that it wasn't good enough and that all eyes were going to be on them to start the second half and and we were all going to be watching them to see how they uh see how they respond I mean here's a fourth down backed up deep in our own territory that uh we went for because I've Got Confidence in that offensive line and good to see us make a play right there as well here on Third and six good to see d on Campbell make a catch across the middle and break some tackles to get us another first down here's another third down conversion we're going to throw this ball to Dre over here on the sideline so we got a drive going we convert on fourth down we got two third Downs that we convert on and then just disappointed that we're not able to finish this thing with points you see lenorris or with a touchdown you see lenorris improvising right there scrambles what a weapon for us as well and you know we're inside the 10 yard line and uh not able to get anything out of it and then take a sack right there on fourth down but then Alex comes in at least we with the opening drive of the second half we go down there and get points and that's huge for us as well hit the quarterback he makes a nice throw right there and their guy makes a catch and and then get him the third and seven they throw the double slant right there or the slant Jaylen Kilgore does a really good job and you know disappointing here fourth down and we bring a pressure we we don't get we're not in the right Gap we should have had somebody in that a gap which is right where he ran should have been a dead play and that goes back to us as coaches we've got to execute better but to me a great sign of a sign of a team that plays the right way is how they handle field goal block on an extra point because you've just given up a touchdown and uh do you come out there and mope or do you come out there and try and make a play and our guys just came out there and made a play so really proud of them for that another first down situation good protection right there Lenoris looking downfield nice job getting that ball to Dre good run after the catch he brings a speed element to our offense that I really like Todd uh again so you know we go don't get what we need to get done uh there one on1 out there on the outside they were going to make some catches and then fourth and eight they bring their guy in here and uh you know big big kick by them nice job by our defense holding them to three points 16 all we get into the fourth quarter and told our team if we're who we say we are then we're going to go make plays in the fourth quarter and go dominate the fourth quarter and find a way to win this thing and no one panicked disappointing here we we we shouldn't should never have been blocked you we got a guy trying to do a little too much right there and instead of just doing his job and we'll get that coached up and and corrected thought we did a good job tackling tonight we missed one here but for the overall I thought we did a decent job of uh tackling they pop a run in here as well and you know they got it uh Second and 20 we and then hold them to a fourth down where they got to kick a field goal we get good pressure right there get a piece of it I guess but he manages to get it through but hey we hold him to a field goal now we just got to go find a way to score a touchdown and and win the game little uh option play right here get the ball to Mao Bennett out on the perimeter we punt it back to him we were going to go for it on fourth down we get a pre- snap penalty which can't happen uh we end up puning to them and then you know one AC our student section our crowd it was loud here and became an issue for their crowd noise for them crowd noise wise Dylan Stewart making a play right there on that strip sack DeAndre Jules new player as well and then get it down here and really good what a play by lenorris I mean they got two guys out there and he's able to you know make them Miss and get in there for the game-winning touchdown up four four minutes left we need some stops defensively nice job right here bringing pressure as well good competitive play right there by our defensive backs also second down uh concept they like to run he kicks it out there see us running to the ball we get him out of bounds as well for minute 40 second down and seven we knew they were going to have to take some shots at some point really good job our defense of keeping everything in front of them what a play by judge CER right there on the pbu and then jayen Kilgore running to the ball had to eat up some time right here we weren't in a position where we could just take knees we had to burn some clock and uh and we did right there and that's a good way to good way to finish it out and get a win a win we're one and0 going to get back to work on Sunday a lot to work on but uh really really excited about this team we're young but we're going to continue to get better each week and have to take a big step this week yeah 32 guys put on the garnet in black for the first time for you at Williams price Stadium uh so that means they're going to get better from week one to week two other teams are as well try to clean that up and go forward uh coach congratulations a win you're one and0 on the season a lot of people would say okay did you ever think about bringing in Robbie Ashford the veteran transfer from Auburn when lenorris was not hitting on some things uh is that an option did you think about it we didn't um you know our issues tonight L noris certainly he'll be the first to tell you has some things to clean up but I thought he did a great job and and uh did what he needed to do to help us to win he certainly missed some throws and we'll get that cleaned up but that's not always on the quarterback I thought he did a great job running the football Robbie's a guy that's going to help us win football games and there's no no doubt about it but uh no Rob the Norris uh no no discussion of that tonight well one guy who didn't miss on anything and our Terminex pest player of the game you've chosen Kyle Canard the defensive end Coach was all over the field tonight three tackles 2.5 sacks two forced fumbles he and Dylan Stewart both had two forced fumbles and really is a big difference in getting that great field position and setting up the offense tonight uh the transfer was awesome he was great he's been that way since he got here that was a great addition for us this off season he's come in and done a great job and he played like he practices he showed it in practice each and every day and like our group up front the way they're able to rush the passer and and and and handle the Run game for sure and Kyle was a big part of that tonight and excited to continue to watch him get better his potential and and how he'll continue to develop uh listen you didn't even have Brian Thomas tonight but it was nice to see you have some upfront guys you could rotate in yeah we got depth up front and obviously that was an issue last year at defensive tackle and defensive end we have more depth uh at both positions and we're able to keep guys fresh where we can be at our best in the fourth of a few of them that you know you need to adjust going into the Kentucky ball game yeah we've just got to be more efficient and not beat ourselves you know the teams that we're going to play the rest of the season are are good enough we don't need to help them and I thought tonight we did too much of helping Old Dominion with our mistakes so we've got to get that cleaned up first of all uh coaches players and we will but lot to build on from tonight there's no question about it and got to play a cleaner football game next Saturday and Lexington than what we did today here in Columbia that's a
