Intro hey guys I'm Jacinta Robinson and welcome to the fearless podcast where I'm to be athletes who achieve incredible things or specialists in the area of health today we're on a zoom call with an inspiring athlete who's achieved incredible things since he lost his foot due to a work accident the great thing about this guy is his mindset and I'm sure you'll be touched I'd like to welcome Jeff ultragaz well Welcome welcome to the first zoom at courgette yeah thanks for having me it's very interesting can they say yeah it's totally different um being across through the young the internet rather than in person that's for sure yeah it is it's a sign of the times yeah I'm sure I'll keep it's all connected then it'll be interesting if we connect slightly a little bit different once this is all over weather will value each other's time a little bit you know yeah I think so 100 is it I reckon we will for sure but then yeah useful tool that the Internet is is you can still feel so connected with people that you can't you know see every day what you used to and all that sort of stuff so it's good yeah cool Was Jed an athlete before losing his leg so for that everyone listening Jed like we know well I know that you're in the Paralympics and that was through my understanding of losing your leg in a workplace accident in 2015 before you get into you and share what actually happened I'd like to know were you an athlete prior to being over oh no not at all so gesture I just got a fix on that like I haven't actually hopefully will be in the Paralympic team but we have a 19 yet instead of selection already put me in my thank you I've just got to stop here because sometimes we'll pull bags you know so Charles will now probably most likely go for us and started makes you were not too sure yet we would have already been child but obviously coming on anyway so but I've been a member of the Australian run team for the last two years at the World Championships and stuff so but before my accident no I wasn't an athlete I definitely would have not called myself that at all I I guess I didn't really I didn't have a drive for fitness at all you know I served I was always an outdoorsy kind of guy but you know a lot of drinkin beers are played in a band you know and and that was kind of where I was at I didn't really care I wasn't unfit but I wasn't at all so that's kind of where I was that ya know Ron and so while rowing yeah rowing hey it's crazy cuz it's Why did Jed start rowing freaking hard it's brutal sport I there's a couple of reasons boat like there there's one obvious reason that is almost like logical is once I got sort of talent I'd be I it was not like basically I because I love the water and I've been on the water for most of my life and around the water I was like well I'd like to be wrong you go um you know rather than looking at cycling or athletics or anything like that so it was wrong in kayak and then from there it's just I just met the head coach of of the para wrong tune in Australia Gordon marks I met him the next weekend he flew down to Adelaide and it was just like a really good connection so I went from that to go okay I'm gonna give this a go and that's kind of why rolling um and you know I learned as we went along how tough it is and how hard it is definitely at some stages I was like you know Wow okay like this is this is what this sport is and what it takes and so it was it was a learning journey as I went yeah and then obviously you've been Jeds greatest accomplishment doing it now for two years you said so what's your greatest accomplishment then yeah I guess so I've been doing it for yeah a little over two years now little bit closer to three and I guess my greatest greatest accomplishment I'm very much a guy who kind of looks at the whole the whole journey as an accomplishment I really and not one shoot I'm not a huge you know not fan but I'm not a shoot person on on a single thing or event although you know representing Australia wearing the green and gold at a World Championships like it was probably my greatest accomplishment this year sorry last year rebel do that movement there and win silver it was a crazy race but a really good one so that was that's probably up there earlier in the year we won gold in a similar event in Italy and so you know that as far as winning a race was great but you know just general representing the country and seeing how far I can push myself is my greatest accomplishment yeah that's fantastic yeah people listening don't know what Jeds accident happened in your ass I like your accident yeah strong healthy yeah whoa lots checked so relaxing it was 2015 I was working in construction so I was working in earth moving in basically I was operating a small digger digging first a fence post holes long story short is we was really unstable ground where we were very steep driveway basically and the Machine tipped over from there I kind of rode it down and as a reaction I put my leg out and it got crushed my left leg got crushed between basically the cab and the end of road or the park basically and that was yeah that was basically how I had my accident and from there it wasn't severed at the scene there was it was a crazy moment there aligned you know just being stuck on a machine for about 15 minutes was crazy and then the ambulance ride and you know I guess you know as that day unfolded you know you know having my wife there any emotions at that brought on and then sort of learning that okay best option was getting my leg amputated you know and those words so that's gonna that day line yeah pretty pretty big day but that's kind of how it went yeah yeah yeah and were you conscious at that time or what yeah I was fully conscious so I Was Jed conscious am i was completely awake sight say i mean i was on the machine that the ambulance took about 15 minutes to get there is there's really weird spots that are kind of getting a bit lost and i had I was really fortunate enough to have the MedStar come as well which you basically like GI Joes of the ambulance world and I think they came down there as well Oh Bella Bella basically saying the same time sort of serious injuries and crushing and sort of crush injuries and stuff like that so I yeah I was I was conscious the whole time like the pain so when I was like when I was sort of looking down my leg it was probably you know there's probably you know the width of that where my foot was you know and I'm looking down at that and was only really from the ankle down and you know at that point I really didn't feel any pain it was just like I just need to get my you know get myself out of here because I was just being stuff was freaking me out and you know I was helping the contractors shoving wood down and we're getting a little bit more you know leverage on the machine to get it off and more and more and you know it's being present at that moment and and and trying so hard to get my leg free you know something I look back now and I'm like you know that was a very strong calf the moment we present now basically you know be a part of that once we got the leg up that's when the pain really kicked in and stayed obviously conscious still but just so thankful like and then the endless midst I rocked up and they just not very very much so and that was good as that was kind of happening now I mean the heaviness feeling I just need a stay with it's do I don't want to like go off with the fairies like they hit me with a lot of ketamine and I was like I was like I was like I just need to stay president so I just had this little 1% of my mind hold on to the reality of what's happening and you know the rest I was you know talking about surfing and weird stuff with the paramedics like they didn't keep your mind off it you know but it was crazy and then and and then yeah like I said went back to hospital they'd flush me out of it and we sort of went through up from there yeah right so when you say what was crush was like all the burns completely What happened smash yeah so it's like completely kind of pancake and and and basically what happened cuz I was wanting to be kind of strong work but you know that's made of rubber and and whatnot on her pants basically afterwards machine plays a month my foot still in it but it was split out one end kinda where the toe cap was but my heel bone for instance was like was sort of you know that fart safely fluent in to be like that my I knew heel bones fear my heel bone was like kind of out here because it all just went like like that but then like the boot kind of fixed it once I took the blade off it all just kind of went and crushed like everybody was completely trashed I mean the probably the biggest thing is why they couldn't really put it back to share the world was just the nerves all humanity no damage and stuff that was there it's just gonna be impossible to connect all that up basically some difficult plumbing I'm imagining and so they basically just said best opportunities take it off yeah yeah Rehab and then obviously you would have had to go into like a rehab process and then what happens then that was yeah that's it ladies you're spot-on basically you can't have spend the next of wasment next sort of two weeks to its in hospital really just sort of I guess managing the pain as well as the infection making sure all of that was getting dressed and sort of the heel with the warning was healing and rehab for me started immediately mentally you know give or take a dad to there was a couple of very extremely juiced up and slept the life that I've been with a three really going okay I need a I need to do what I can't see what yeah what is this all about and that's when I started on the internet just scouring for information on one no amazing people doing amazing things to like what's what's the mechanics of a leg like how does it work I was fortunate enough my wife's grandfather he's an absolute legend Gordon he's the below-knee amputee so I mean I was fortunate enough to date for if I became in it showed me his leg and so it's just oh and that's my setup and so that was cool and and I'd still though like emotionally I didn't look down I didn't want to see not a leg there so I still was very emotionally still that but for me it was one in the same it was just like what can I do to keep you know physically keep going but also emotionally said you know it all came in in part but I spent to reach there and then we moved to a rehab center basically where you can live there for another two weeks and then that's where that was basically the first team I ever walked into was that like Jim was the first like you know I'm talking like Barry it was pretty well set up now I think about it but it was like people learning how to walk again you know no one's in there like trying to make hundred you know hundred kilo cleans and stuff like it's very you know it was it was it was very mellow you know everyone was absolutely kicking goals in there a lot of a lot of elderly we've done a lot of amputees in elderly three-deep diabetes and stuff like that a couple of young who like myself but that was the first Jim and that was when like I said in hospital when I was sort of in you know in the search of trying to I guess inform myself and then in turn you know in doing that empower myself again was was you know I read this thing about agreed to the to live a good life live a healthy life as a man continued you need to be fit light and strong that's something that I probably never really took the box off before I was like if I'm gonna actually you know be able to be you know have good movement and still do cool stuff I don't know what I didn't know what it was there that stage to just live a happier life I need to see them and that's when it was you know well that's an illogical guy was like well that's like I swear I'm gonna do that and so that was the seed that Conor I was like feet long strong wish few words feel but I'm strong and from there it was like let's do it let's have you know and so that's where it happened and then the physical stuff when the gym started and went from start I stayed in a rehab gym for probably probably six months and then I started going to like just a sort of generic kind of good luck to you me and me for a month or two and then a guy there saw me that had just peachy Jeff's got he's just basically took over CrossFit box like around the corner and then that's when I was like he's like dude I think you want to do this that's exactly went on today so that's kind of my journey you and would you say that because what you're talking about you're focusing on positive scenes did you point where you Down Days were like you had some down days or you're like this isn't physically possible like like did you have that did you yeah yep absolutely I absolutely had down days and moments but like they were very much I learnt early to to to like it basically the way I explained situation and paper was like at that time like just everything was just on like on steroids like as far as focus as far as everything you're sponging in everything like you know so so I really feel like it was almost like you could jet you know it's like you could get a year's work done in a week it's just like everything you were just so focused on everything and that could be good or bad you know if it was focusing on the bad and should go cooling like that down about that down the good wine and so for me I explained it like I'm choosing the positive the positive choices here I'm choosing the opportunities I'm choosing gratefulness instead of blame and hate and you know and stuff like that like I when I when I got wheeled out of the normal Hospital into the rehab hospital I was practicing it already you know I asked my mom to stop just for them that's it turned around a bowed and prayed to the horse but you know I just don't know I don't even pray because it's like thank you to the hospital you know I was practicing gratitude Dan and just because that's the sort of stuff that I knew I needed to feel myself upwards I didn't drink for about 18 months so you know not that I think drinking is bad but I just didn't want to even test my stove and not just that yeah you know I didn't want to put that myself in that one abilities fungal state or whatever so it was just those things that I chose to do and then the days that were [ __ ] and the times that worship I you know wouldn't let it get to in control of me I would oh you know and it's not you know might be a whole day it might be you know half the day or but I would really make sure it wouldn't be more than a day and I would get okay why am I feeling like this you know why am I feeling [ __ ] why do i what is this you know is it you know is it blame you know what is it no try and digest it and then again I would pick something that I'm grateful for it's something I just try sometimes will feel pointless a nameless but I hope you know I say to people it's not even if it's a small little seed that you plant it's better than that you know no force it's there if you just plant I'm grateful for this bucket if that's all I got I'm happy right and you know I like him so I would just always bring it back to stuff like that and that's kind of why my bad my bad moments were never more than a half the day a few hours a day a couple email couple times it was always you know and then I'd be good and like fall off again and then whatever and not to say that you know still on the good days I'm completely smiling and happy I'd still be like you know it's just it's just that overarching vibe was positive let's keep pushing let's keep working yeah and I think too it's focusing on the book and singing what's happened and Gratitude then in finding that what you're saying that positive outlook cause it you are faced with probably such a overpowering like if you looked at it like negative side so if you can see the the blessing in that then I'm lost it's gonna help try before and I think that's that's really powerful and and really cool that you could adapt that did you learn that off anybody or is that just something it's not I didn't change the human being we may actually only knows I've always been a positive guy but I've got to say I definitely feel lucky to be had the moment out of going them brother and sister the family have been brought up with is being full of gratitude you know that we've had our tough times and I drank us as a family but it just is overarching gratefulness that we have hadn't been brought up with and also you know also you know it's just I definitely would say that but then also I guess it's just the fact that I was tested you know I call it you know it was a text and I'm so grateful now and you know it wasn't even long after the accident that I could stay myself I'm sorry [ __ ] for these texts like you know whether it is the loss of my leg you know kind of kinda whatever like you know so I've been tested and now I've learned and it wasn't like I just used something new these things it was it was it's organic it's not like a computer it's not like a machine it's so rigid you know as a human you're organic and you you ever you'd flow and you know you know you can be up and you can be down that doesn't mean happy and sad that you can your energies can do this and so you know you got to understand that and then also understand consistency is key and so if you're consistently trying to those things day in and day out most positive way then you're gonna get results and so that's kind of that's kind of how it all came to be I mean I because I was tested I was able to apply these things and as I'm doing him bunch it's working this is amazing I feel powerful I'm grateful for the accident you know losing my leg losing a bit of body a bit of blood a bit of bone is nothing compared to how I've grown as a human so you know and then that's and then that opened my mind up taking third they're thinking like that yeah and deep why do you believe Why Jed believes that he has been tested that you've been tested it's more so it's more so like I mean like do you think that was to this happen to you so that you could inspire more with with the way that you are like I have been brought up where you've been yeah for sure I think I think as humans we have a couple web doing things like some selective so we're really good at basically connecting the dots and so you could easily look at me I could easy go look you know this is this is a purpose this is this is you know this is to motivate this is all happen but you know I think it can be a little it can it can be back but you know it can also be it you know it's one of those things you believe in fate it's like it can also be just I also you know leading up to my accident so I was 28 working in construction do a month mean life is great you know but you know married at 27 to rule going do or think about having kids and and snow is all going good but I just had this feeling from about 25 I had this feeling I was like I've got there's more here like [ __ ] there's so much more to this I don't know what it is is it do I need to go to my own business do I need to do something and I've always had this drive maybe put it elsewhere in social settings but never really in other settings in my life and so I could sometimes I'm like I have almost a season for myself because I made it the test and I said well this is it J like you know you tested what do you got and and and maybe it was me asking it for me just to see how how I would react and I think about that sometimes that's a little bit crazy and far out but that's sometimes how I feel about it and then I guess you know if people can pull anything from it then that's just a bonus like I know it for a fact that I've I pull stuff from everyone every day you know what I mean I think it's just an ongoing I think you've got to be open to that every day regardless of whoever you are so you know you can appreciate what people do and how people act and react and I think you should be open to that every day for sure it's part of it yeah mm-hmm and I feel like if you don't learn whatever that lesson What happens when you lose your leg is that last spring to you it will come in another form until you take it on board and and grow as a person yeah like that yeah so tell us about like okay through you like what happens with your you're late do you get like a prosthetic leg yeah [Music] they expensive yeah they're super expensive very very expensive my apparatus being targeted by WorkCover I'm extremely fortunate enough to have my legs with doctor so you know this countless amount of people where they have got a you know a good body [ __ ] lost his leg with the shark attack you know he's no cover he's got to come up with the money himself and there's that side of it that I've also always not struggled with as well but you know it's just sucks it is the way it is but in saying that I also believe that like like I you know look at this especially my yeah he's got to grind a little harder for certain things but it's just like he's better for it you know no maintenance yeah but the legs themselves are expensive I mean this one's like this is my cycling like I still rather long a rod but you know anywhere between 15 and 25 30 grand expensive and just like it's crazy I mean you know you bring the yeah I have had the opportunity to travel the world in the last couple years and race different countries and rowing boats it's crazy that sounds but you know when you meet some of these underprivileged countries and fees of the organization that runs rolling bus globally they do a great job inviting those kind of blessed fortunate countries into the guard is training them up trying to get them going you know you just see you see them and you know you see some from certain countries in bed asleep Ramirez like it's across it in everywhere like you know the wealth of the world is distributed completely very unevenly we all know that the like when it comes to something like a walking and something that we take so for granted and then we're born to do it and yep some people can't just purely because they can't afford it it's like it's hard to swallow sometimes yeah you definitely appreciate where you are yeah man yeah so tell me about like adapting like you like retraining in that how did How did you adapt how did you guard yes so I guess first of all pre rolling it was like well just what can I do and you know as we went on it was kind of like we're lacking time to do everything I don't have an ankle ankle flexion so maybe squatting isn't as deep as my ankle doesn't Bend things like that no but it was pretty much everything is this certain you know my leg to sleep off if it gets too sweaty which is happened toasted by my legs literally oh so I've got to be careful in that regard but it's just adapting to also the other thing because I never trained before I really don't know if the difference was because I'm sure I'm surely that would probably be a lot more differences but because it's just new as well this is just how I better do it I didn't know how to do it before so there probably isn't that differences I often think you know in the fitness cast Romans did I am now if Rowing leg that was the case you bought one probably wouldn't be where you are nodded if it didn't happen if the test didn't happen I wouldn't be where I am on it you know you know I think I'd be doing something pretty cool but not maybe not this no yeah like one things we have to like we have had to adapt is there just small things like my rowing leg for instance all very good it's - sex is there so this is my rowing way oh yeah so the difference here is obviously you go up to the cap take the catch say if you're thinking about it on an Ergo you up to the catch so this is going to stop her there and it stops my ankle so I need this I need the movement to be able to get up to the catch and down to the cat and down to the finish and then also I need to stop at a kind of mimic where you're I guess with you your Achilles stops letting you bend and your ankle joints so we've had to make I mean I didn't have this style weird I just had to figure it out myself and play around my leg for the black a little bit different was just a little bit of a different angle on the foot we just play around with things all right yeah and has that Knee and hip affected your knee or your hip at all funny and Sarah is I've been running a fair bit lucky because we know that on water and my left hip was played up a little bit I because you look at it and and it can I've just got to be careful just like anything if you start a new movement you know anyone I haven't had a huge amount of issue so far probably the biggest issue is almost like the sling effect that we have with our body so you say your right leg and your left arm the way that pulling works is it really swings especially in a boat Brian sweep is and so my thick and especially my right side thoracic gets a little jacked up there and stuff so but with good consistent mobility work and physio it's just like fine yeah and we Mobility work can say mobility work do you mean stretchy or do you mean like using weights to get into certain ranges or I'm also stretching but like mixture of static stretching and and you know the other you know just moving through stretching and just stuff like that that's probably not liability I'm sort of talking about they're just keeping keeping just keeping moving keeping thoracic moving very well for me that's a big thing and my hamstrings nice and loose that's a big thing which is just all normal for me it's just you know a couple sessions a day before I wrote or before a trial or whatever and then yeah I think I train a lot of people and when Stretching it comes to when you say all you've got away from your mobility stretch count they're just like why would I do that that's so important it's probably a little bit more important than just me it's getting some range in there because they're so tight oh yeah it's so true and it's like longevity to it like it's gonna give you longevity in those movements and you know I've learnt you know I've learnt that yeah we know you can and the thing is is you can it doesn't seem it when you stop you can get better at it CP I don't people people just think so I can just I can touch my toes just like you really can't you just go take trying like I you know people don't think we can get better at it and I mean there are some amazing amazing people I've had amazing touches throughout my circle that's just you know can just a place they can put their body and how much power they have in those certain positions is amazing so I look at that gecko that's why I do it No yeah partly as well as just to keep me moving I'm especially not the recipe I've just got always had that I have a day or two off a row or or or the water like it's just no good I've always just got to keep my back dyeing backs back to linking with Rosie Ruiz yeah it's amazing hey that when you don't move for a couple of days and then you know like Oh tight and you're like oh my god it's I just needed to get down on the ground and just you know move around a little bit and I want to be fun yeah you definitely sort of I guess especially as you age you kind of stiffen up a little bit yeah you do you really yeah yeah I agree stretching is going to be I think the big thing coming out leaning forward yeah I think that I know I'm gonna say this cuz I'm a girl but strengthening the glutes like I think I look I'll just do the legs and you like Nouri having strong glutes really helps with a lot of movements oh so many minutes it's such it's like the biggest muscle worth and it's just like it's in the center of your body it just helps with everything yeah so I Family want to know Jed like cuz you cuz you are a positive person and I mean that but what's the indra it's like for you to keep growing every single day when it gets hard you're obviously a father to two beautiful kids or is it something it's my deep inside you yeah I think for sure family in a way definitely like I think you know I definitely think of them you know when it's part or you know when I'd say I don't feel like getting out of bed you know you know but really like I've got to say it's super personal it's it's it's not like wearing putting a golden it's not putting a gold medal around in Tokyo it's not you know it's not wearing the green and gold all these things are amazing and absolutely a little bit of spice on top like a it's like it's just super it's like how far can I go how hard can I go it's like it's like that's what drives me is like it's like if you strip me down but make it knots necessarily but if you took all the other crap away you know like it's like it's still just me and whatever it may be whatever the tool is whatever that the medium is if it's wrong if it's cycling if it's running if it's a relationship if it's you know if it's career it's like how good how far can I go how good can I go you know and that's really what it is for me it's like how hard can I go how good can I be yeah that's what it is yeah yeah I think that's really inspiring and I think a lot of people like I feel like they want to have that drive as well and I think a lot of the time people think that it's just like a natural thing that you feel that way but I it comes down to you just constantly re talking yourself into that do you think the same like yeah yeah you got it yes absolutely I think it probably stemmed from me going I think this is where I stem from get on I lost my leg like are you good and the asanas customs getting good it was like how can you do this really started from that and then it developed into all right now how far can I take this and push this but it's consistently telling myself that one is it it's it's you can't drop the ball on it and it's it's you know that's you know you know and it helps when you have the amazing people around your training super hard as well and you can kind of go myself no and that's I'm you know learning training learning training intent you know and then it's not necessarily technique it's just like how someone applies himself day in and day out consistent consistently it's like learning all of that I was a part of it and then yeah it comes down to for me just count how far I want to take it but always reminding yourself that we're not dropping the ball and it comes to a time when you might be like oh it's time to move on now it's you know whatever it may be and you know and apply back to something different but I think you can apply that to what I was saying everywhere so what's going on Olympics with the Olympics now that it's out yet um what do you do for training because from my understanding obviously you train up to a certain point so that you can do your trials and you work up from there um what are you doing yeah so it's crazy so basically I meant to have trials so meant to be already selected well we had we had placing a little metal clip so there's one of the one of the crew nothing too crazy they've decided to postpone that in that time post went for a couple of weeks covert 19 just spiked up and since then obviously everyone knows what's going going on and then I guess on that front it's like it took a while for everyone outfit for the IFC to basically make a call on what they're doing the Olympics and Paralympics which from the get and from the way it was happening overseas here for me it was frustrating I was just like make it make a call and I for me the call was to postpone and every day like when it started to get serious you know in a sense of countries locking down and certain you know and people panic buying toilet paper and just like to the point where so say it now's not the time we focusing on this I could call it it's not it's not selfish goal but like when you're in the mix of it like me and you don't day in day I mean its course I've got a family to care for and look after it's hard to put yourself through the grind every day and just think about yourself and so for me that's what's hard and so so so relieved when they called the clean on that interested but we're gonna do it now um much training as you know maintaining training hasn't changed I'm not training any less there's been different so the biggest thing is obviously as we all know australia-wide jeans are closed I mean worldwide I'm pretty sure they closed but like gyms are closed we can train on water so basically no interaction thankfully riding a bike sit so those the biggest change with me as in no on water sucks that's what we did obviously our volume and do a lot of our work we cross train with the bike and year ago obviously but now it's really turned into you know using the black cross between the bike and the Ergo to also do the volume I probably leaning more toward a lot of people probably leaning more toward the bike to get the volume in as far as the fitness base is concerned you can't do it too long you know and you can go for a three hour ride you jump on the over three hours every day and play back out so you know yeah so that's kind of how it's changed but it you know we had a bit of up in the air week a bit of a breath week two weeks ago that because I live just go well we have to go and go now now and we'll just ticking along every day nothing crazy whatever an area with so did that and then we finally got back into it with the proper structure program two weeks ago and it's taken a little bit to get used to but with the good team around you like I said so you know we're all connecting on yes and it's like we're still accountable so you know like this morning I finished my session and I just instantly on training plates uploaded that form to the team right what I've done already what do you know what do you got you know it's just like I say that's helped as well you know and one of the young boys Oscar came up with that idea early days so we got it I know what we got to do people it'll be something that guys something so that was cool and now for us it's it's a little out you know as far as when Charlene's going on so hopefully hopefully I find out soon I'm guessing because it's all set back exactly twelve months that we're just gonna go back to trialing in May next year again and then go from there so this year it's just steady steady bill like build that platform to about volume we do a lot of that and sport and its kind of physically and you know how our sport so we do do a lot of like long-t to heart rate you know sort of staff and so that's kind of what would probably do a bit more of and then we start shopping our and then taper and then trial I mean kind of go game and talk about compete Competition and like from my understanding when you said before you need to be live for rolling is that correct oh that's more just I need it to be life in strong but I mean it helps to be necessarily been maybe like you need to be it's not like say say body build type so for the rolling is not necessarily lean you can be big guy good girl strong you just gonna make sure you got the power to back that up and then you're good you know what I mean it's you know it's good to be long and tall you means you if you know you're gonna have a longer stroke but you ultimately need to be extremely fit so like really some of the high vo twos are rollers so really really big Fitness place there and but then also strength and you know weights not a big deal you know a lot of the men will sit around not you know somewhere between high 80s and 100 kilos a few of them are over 100 kilos and this is like the lean guys so we're talking very very strong and killer guys but you know they're like six six six seven kind of big guys I'm six-two I'm 85 kilos 82 with the leg off so you know yeah that's kind of you don't can comparison assess cyclists as well as a cyclist and especially bro who have really big good strong legs quite lean you know they don't need the extra weight where we can get a low that we do need to be strong up top steel just really good Kings movement obviously with the bodies but legs are biggest driver I mean I might sure what it's like 60 70 60 65 say we were standing the stroke outcomes from that leg drive let's start and then followed by your body then your arms so that's fine our body shape economies yeah so how do you like train for strength for that like is Strength Training it is it what do you do yeah so it's white so it's general it's a general white cycle like your kind of traditional your traditional kind of I don't know the exact complete like direct terms and stuff like I'm not a I'm a trainer but like for instance it's not it's not lucky yet right it's not cross we come back you're coming from cross oh I love getting into the normal jeans that are just go to your squats and benchpress and then go do you yeah and you know I mean it's very like bad and building up the moon it's very specific movements to what you're doing you know what I mean single leg presses we you know like a lot it like hip lifts you know if you little bit of terrible staff a little bit of pushing we don't use a lot of chest it just to counteract the back you do a lot of pulling exercises strength and it will go from sort of volume building sort of raw power and strength to as we start to get into it'll change will go through phases are it'll be more explosive jumps you know and and repetitive explosive power we call it circuits stuff like that so that's kind of it's probably kind of sixteen between those find a couple of things this Suns doing weird stuff to my hair let me see if I can move I mean Balance saying that like how how do you make sure that your other leg has the strength in it because obviously the leg that you have would already have like I don't know how to explain it do you know what I mean like how do you balance out the strength in both legs yeah well what try it so you come up you come up with it you can come at it with two taxa first actors all right let's try and match up with a CA that's obvious that's it two powerful heads you know it's gonna prevent injury whatever well we learned you learn pretty easy if you're just not gonna be able to make you I'm not gonna be able to make my left leg my left because my right it's just the way it is you can definitely build on it though so that was the thing that was like I we can we can target certain movements and would play around with I like weird is really shins I've never seen that we've got assessing here just like this being no idea what it's called but anyway targets my left glute amazing so I jump on that sucker and I you know there's a few things that we try and just make sure the left is getting as much as it can but ultimately the bright that's just gonna be it's so much bigger and stronger than my left so the other thing was like well not too we don't want to make the right you know plateau right we still need it so it's just like we got to at one time at one point they were let's try and even enough and kinda got to a point this is like early days but you're trying to learn in what's good and what's bad you know and then I think the strength essence the coaches that look good I think we just gonna make you ride as strong as we possibly can I think your body's gonna be fine let's just do it and so since name last anything like something like it doesn't matter like you know that's where and we're just going to be let us set the movements I've never really had any issue with injuries I don't know my body just adapts to it you know it just figures it out yes does that affect your stroke in the water like it doesn't know like I know a Stroke lot of people said even with a skull so I wrote like like my national but international bike sweet so that's one or so you only I'm only rolling on one side of boat so you're never gonna really notice that but you train a lot on a single so yeah two oars on the other side and you would think that I would go not straight but I'll just go straight for some reason and I don't like everyone's like yeah I just don't know whether you know that's why I'm making my right side my backs jacked up because because that's sling effect we thought this is because if you think that's not my right arm is swinging with my left leg which is my weak leg and so maybe I'm really pulling through and you know I'm not noticing and but we don't yeah maybe you're like consciously thinking that you're gonna go straight so you're just automatically doing that Future Goals that's it it's just consciously thinking it's manifesting straight lines so obviously your um your future goals now to go through to the Olympics do you have any other goals that you want to smash out yeah fitness tip for now I loves your mouth on so I'd like to do that I don't think I'm gonna be able to do that before before Tokyo depending on selection when I get selected then I think I'm like against something like that before and you know a few things like that and I'd like to do a triathlon so I can take a couple of things off like that I'd also like to see critique back into the adaptive craft across maybe go to what if the loser or something like that I'd like to sort of do a couple of those things and then on the other side of it is developing thoughts and stuff so I've done a few talks at schools and I love doing it so that's that's probably the biggest thing that's kind of once the intenseness of training at this elite level and the time and dedication it takes fades away and when that does you know whether it's in a year or four years that's you can you can't keep doing that and keep pushing that and developing a product or just having my you know my facing as many schools and you know workplaces and stuff like that so Jenny how can people How To Contact Jed get in contact with you Mike obviously they're listening in and if they would do yeah speak how do they how do they contact you yeah well probably the easiest ways instagram and facebook my Instagram you can obviously put my name in to both of them Jedi which way here in the funny there's not too many Jedi where he's answer on their my Instagram banner was new boots old James you boot old jeans actually I changed it so I had to tag new boots old jeans before I lost my leg and then some guy may have come in it's like he was in high demand so that's gonna that's my Instagram handle there I do a lot I do a lot on both I've got a couple of things on YouTube that I've done early days and I'm gonna do little bit more of that but I'm you know Instagram and you know birthday and me I get heaps of bands from you know around the world around the country so I always like interacting and doping out when I can yeah well and anyone that's listening on pro-hop Jed's Instagram Jeds Advice Facebook and email in the in the comments below so that way they can get direct access for you know Jed I'd love to know before we hop off the call here what's your advice for everybody that seemed like obviously with the coronavirus there's lots of people indoors and they're a bit fearful one is still trained and still want to get you know that the feeling from training that D stress so what would you what's your advice yeah okay I think um I think firstly is you know regardless of whether it's training or what or whether it's your work or your career whatever is I sort of touched on it before with knees is we'd all have an amazing opportunity right now the world's completely stopped slowing down and we all have an opportunity to be able to do the same and in doing that you know we can grow as we can grow as a person as a person I think being able to slow down and really try and figure out for you what's what equals happiness and you know sometimes when you caught up in the rat wheel of like and you you know and you go on to work and trying to earn money and whatnot and you know you can lose that but you know if you're forced unfortunately you know a lot of people are forced a lot of their jobs and that's to know that so did losing my leg and it's you know it didn't stop me from looking for the opportunities so I'd you know I'd say start look for the opportunities and if that's spending more time with your family or or it's you know your next step when the world sort of gets back going in the cold start turning again and then the other thing is just to remember to keep moving and keep fit we're very fortunate enough you know most parts of Australia we can get outside isn't you know even if it's to by yourself or with your partner with your housemate or whatever you can you can get outside just keep keep get out there do what you can and and keep moving it's very important but also understand that you know it's hard time isn't isn't necessarily it doesn't have to be a bad time you may there are amazing opportunities here for individuals for countries for states for government governments you know you name it no I truly hope that we all grab the opportunities it's I think it's a powerful time you know it's not necessarily you know the best news ever but it's powerful and let's use the power as Ben Next Motivational Speech [Laughter] cool well everyone listening get ready for Jen's next motivational speech so you were saying on um YouTube that you do like a little series tell us about that yeah I mean again you can probably look it up with Jedi where we did a few early days I was I got very much into okay and I've tried things I've loved everything I've done I've learnt so much from doing it so there's a little bit online that if you typed in Jedi way or a new boot I'll change your font on YouTube as cup just things on resilience or how to foster gratitude and things like that that's kind of what's up there but the body-mind brad is driftwood on instagram there he he contacted me out of blue somewhat out of the blue yesterday and we had a little chat and he's like let's do some stuff I don't know how to do it but he's you know he's the videographer guy is really talented let's do some stuff so maybe you know this coming week some probably have a few more new orleans out especially at these you know trying times for everybody so hopefully would be some fresh stuff up soon awesome well look for tuning in thank you yeah thanks Mike thank you cool well thank you so much for joining us on the zoom podcast today yeah first one and it seemed really listening to the way that you think I think that's really really fascinating I think a lot of people can take your take that as inspiration and change the way that they think towards what's going on in right now and then also for their life moving forward I think that's really powerful we're thinking I think that's really cool so thank you so much thanks so much for having my opportunities yeah thanks listening guys if you're on Apple please leave a five star a written review if you're on YouTube give us a thumbs up and subscribe to the channel alright I'll see you next week with the next inspiring story [Music]
