the Oklahoma Breakdown gmail.com de we got a lot to get to man so let's let's jump into it uh let's start like we always do with U football and we're going to continue our breakdown of U's roster with the running back position but the conversation has to start with the running back's coach and that is DeMarco Murray it's always good when other BigTime programs want your guys and in a shocking development throughout the offseason other people have wanted DeMarco Murray to be their running backs coach Ohio State came after him Ohio State's got a ton of resources it is a massive brand it is a massive program I think it's the only other program that has an argument to say it's been more consistent than Oklahoma football over the last several decades but ultimately considered it as he should and decided to stay at Oklahoma and I'm assuming will be compensated accordingly for that decision but Ted this was this turned into a bit of a development But ultimately DeMarco Murray staying home and that's that's really all that matters to me yeah no it's we heard that from coach vbl that you know there were several guys on the uh coaching staff that people were coming after DeMarco Murray bill beatbo um uh who I'm drawing a blank um Bates coach Bates people were coming after coach Bates so it's going to be something that happens when you're having success um and I know that the results haven't necessarily been what we've wanted over the last couple of years but people can see what's happening DeMarco has started to recruit really well at running back um everyone knows what Bill does defensive line we've started to recruit really well like things are happening um you know we lost the offensive coordinator to a head coaching position last year after a really good uh um couple of Seasons as offensive coordinator and here's the thing if we have a good year next year on offense people are going to be coming after Seth the trail for head coaching job or offensive coordinator or Joe John Finley that's how it goes when you have success people that don't have success are wanting to pluck your people to try and rebuild their programs so it's a sign in my opinion that things are healthy up at the football offices I I I think it is if you're choices are people wanting your people or people not wanting your people you want people to want your people yep that that means that other people are noticing and DeMarco's situation it is different because he is DeMarco Murray there's still that re name recognition even with recruits even though DeMarco's been retired a little for a little bit now but everyone still knows that he was the NFL offensive player of the year for the Dallas Cowboys I mean yeah so there is pretty much every school of the country would want DeMarco to be their running back's coach but as a guy that blocked for DeMarco Murray I'm just thrilled I don't have to see him wear another logo man I that that would have hurt my soul and can we we talk a lot about just keeping your guys and one thing that I absolutely love about the staff is all the connections they have to OU not and not to say that some of the guys on the staff that don't have those connections it I'm not saying it doesn't mean as much to those guys but I know it means a hell of a lot to DeMarco Murray to be coaching at his Alma moer I know he loves OU I've talked to him about it so there's a there's a business piece to this entire situation right and I want DeMarco to get paid as much as possible but it would have caused me physical pain to see him in Ohio State gear so I am I am beyond thrilled that he's staying at Oklahoma and I I am I'm glad that U's leadership stepped up the way that they needed to step up to make sure he wasn't going anywhere else I and I don't think DeMarco was the coach anywhere else I I yeah I I think he I think he loves coaching at doou and I know there were some Family Ties uh for his wife's side of the family there in the state of Ohio but if he would have left that the Optics just would have been terrible man terrible U Legend leaves for Ohio State that just would have been a brutal look I would have I would not have enjoyed the discourse around that so I'm I'm really glad he stayed put you know I agree it's like even even if like he loves OU but maybe is ready for a different role which is natural for people right to whatever they're doing want to grow a little bit maybe step outside take on something a little uncomfortable like even if he did that like the response would be how' you guys screw this up right so I I'm glad that he's he's still here and you know I'll say about DeMarco I think he clearly he can do whatever he wants including absolutely nothing right that's one of the options but I think he does a really good job he he works at it he doesn't just it it's not just a cruise job for him he he puts in the work and you know I and I think I've said before on here I am incredibly impressed having been to some of the events recruiting functions like all of the different things that they have going on up there the man can work a room he really can and he's I I don't know he's a great asset to have uh not just because that he's one of our alltime greats here and and a great running back he's just he's a great person to have in the room um I'm glad he's staying here I am I'm with you and we'll see I I think DeMarco could be a head coach in the relatively near future if he wanted to be I just don't know if he wants to do that I kind of think he likes to recruit and handle his running backs and not have to be responsible for much else you know I think he enjoys that but feels like there's more people than there ever have been avoiding that role right now no kidding so we'll see but hey all that matters is number seven stay in put I love it which is a perfect transition into our breakdown of the guys in his room and Ted when you think about the current running back situation for the Sooners not enough that did not get enough from that position a year ago we've talked a lot about it but I I think that when you talk to the staff about this group of backs that are on campus right now remember Taylor Tatum's not there yet so so we're not going to include him in this conversation that the conversation starts with Gavin Sawchuk and saw Sawchuk a couple weeks back and he does he does look a little thicker physically which I thought was really encouraging they've got him listed at 511 195 but to me looked like he had added some muscle I guess the question is can he make the jump or maybe the most important question is can he stay healthy for an entire off season and make the physical gains that he needs to make because we know we know the speed's there when things are clean the speed is there but can he become a guy that is a true Difference Maker that can make something out of nothing multiple times a game because that's that's really what separates backs in my mind is the guys they are guys that just they get what's blocked they get what's there and can Gavin Sawchuk be a guy that gets more than what's there and I I really hope he makes the jump because sounds like this guy does every everything right on and off the field and you know keep staying healthy throughout the spring and throughout summer is going to be huge for him but he needs to improve he absolutely does yeah no I agree you know it's interesting with saluk I think the physical traits he's he's got everything that you need uh you know he's powerful when when he needs to be he's elusive in the open field we know he's got the Home Run gear uh for top speed he can flat out fly you know it feels like and this is not really even a just a Sawchuk thing it's kind of the running back group together when I think about what javante Barnes and Sawchuk looked like in the Florida State game going back two years ago in the bowl game I saw a couple of guys that were like running the football offensively aggressively attacking running over guys and it like when you look back it's like okay we're an underdog in this football game we don't have a lot of our guys just there's really not a whole lot of expect ations just go out and cut it loose and that's what we saw since that point I feel like as a running back group we've been feeling our way around a little bit not very assertive not very aggressive like trying to make the right play instead of just go do your thing and I think to me that's the biggest thing with Sawchuk to cut all of that great athleticism loose he just needs to go and I don't know if it was if it was a health thing maybe holding them back if it was worried about making a mistake or I don't know but I think it's fair to say for a big chunk last year it just didn't look like it had the same pop and then it got better and better towards the end of the season but I mean to me that's the biggest thing cut it Loose get aggressive like don't run the ball defensively which is weird to say I understand but that's kind of what I how I feel like we were running the football last season I I I think that he's clearly got all the tools but the health thing is a huge factor I you you can't be you can't be a soft tissue guy that's always got muscle pulls and you're missing two weeks here and missing a week there and you're out of training camp I mean running back is a rhythm especially in college it's like a rhythm position like you need your carries week in week out you need to like you you need to get calloused for the position to be a really like a a true topend running back in in the SEC and I I think we've got several guys that have that ability it's just whether or not not we get that type of play out of them I I completely agree and kind of the last thing on Sawchuk and what we saw from him last season I kind of felt like until the last couple games of the year he looked like a a golf cart with the governor on it yeah yeah where it just it couldn't quite get to where he wanted it to go or maybe he was hesitant to take it to open it completely up and my hope you're nagged by injury like that right and there there's that hesitation they're like hey if I if I punch the gas I'm I gonna pull my hamy again so I get that but he needs to get to a place physically where he can play the position as fast as possible he won't get to where he wants to be at three quarter speed no you know he just you just won't get there yeah and his three quarter speed is fast pretty good it's pretty good but we need him at 100 and if he can get there if he can stay healthy man I am interested to see what it looks like now there's there's clearly a big piece of this discussion that is tied in to the offensive line into what the Run game's going to look like as a whole under Seth Latrell and Joe John Finley there's also a tight ends piece to it you know what are their personnel groupings going to look like usually if you can get in Personnel groupings you can run a couple different concepts when it comes to the Run game then you can without those type of bodies on the field so that's all that all goes into this conversation but we don't want to make this last four hours because I will go down an absolute rabbit hole but Seth LR and jojn Finley part of their job is to figure out what run Concepts not only fit these backs the best but what run run Concepts fit whatever they end up Landing with on the line so that that is that's not an easy thing but that that's a piece of all this but I think one of the more interesting questions on the roster right now Ted is the the running back situation starts with Sauk I think right now if you look at it he has he has earned the rb1 label up to this point but the second running back that feels very up in the air to me mhm no I totally agree who do we who do we talk about next is it Caleb Hicks is it the transfer Sam Franklin Javonte Barnes did not look let's be real he did not look good at all last season yeah well you know and it goes back to the health thing did we ever get an like figure out exactly what the surgery he was that he missed springing with the foot it was as far as I know it was a pretty standard foot surgery my guess was always fifth metatarsal and that was something that I had that surgery in high school and a lot of people have it and some people have complications with it I I don't know if that was what it was yeah but you know me we kind of steer away from the hey man what's his injury conversations well he just he did he looked like a shell of himself yeah he did from from the true freshman year where you know he was explosive and again it's kind of back to the I'm a true freshman I don't know what I'm doing I'm just G to go as hard as I possibly can and you saw that whenever he runs the football and that's like okay hey once he gets a little bit of Polish to his game some ball security you know UPS his game in the in the pass protection aspect the passing game like this is going to be a great back and he was ever able to hit that that full speed again like we saw his freshman year know that's kind of say is like as a position group last year we were not nearly as explosive as we needed to be and guys were feeling their way and I I don't know what there could be some very good reasoning for that but that really doesn't matter to me we just have to get better at the position become more explosive and hopefully Barnes is healthy has put some good time between the injury the surgery and now and he's back to that explosive guy that we saw two years ago yeah that guy could run the football anywhere completely agree what happened to him as a player last year it was just odd and and I don't know if it was you know more than the injury I don't know if there was something mentally on I I don't know but he went from running with a lot of violence to not yeah well and his cuts his Cuts were I mean just it didn't look like he could cut so can he get back to looking more like he did as a freshman which is kind of weird to say out loud but well that's what I was going to say is as you know as a freshman I it's almost like kicker to a degree when kickers haven't missed a kick the most confident guys you'll ever see all of a sudden when they miss that first kick and there's a little bit of doubt that has crept in it's never really the same from that point on and as a freshman you haven't made any mist Stakes you don't you're not carrying any emotional baggage behind you whenever you're you're asked to to go out and compete and do something you start making a couple you have a big fumble in a game you have a big mistake that get your quarterback sacked and bar ball Jarred loose like whenever you make some mistakes it's it can have an effect on how you play and you can lose some of that aggressiveness and second guess what you do I don't know if that's the case with the guys but you know there's been something that held them back a little bit last year and maybe it's just the injury thing but I don't know we go to we got to recapture what we had there we'll see we'll see what he looks like throughout spring and because you start looking at this running back room there's a lot of guys now there's there's a lot of guys that are going to be battling for snaps and there is just there's no doubt out when you line the running backs up and you just look at them your eyes are drawn to zero there's just I mean Caleb Hicks he looks like he should be the best running back on the team 51 216 pounds is what He's listed at on the spring roster perfect it's he looks fantastic I had one member of the staff to say he may be two swole which is a good thing so you look at his physical build you look at his quickness explosiveness the he's got the topend speed that you need you know it feels like a no-brainer that'll be a major contributor but then you start thinking about the types of things that keep young backs off of the field now you you've got a lot of stuff going on for other for college football players right but just the football piece that would keep them off the field it it's mental mistakes it's pass protection especially like Demarco is extremely demanding when it comes to knowing your pass protection rules but if Caleb Hicks can excel in that area know what he's doing in pass protection with the way that he looks physically and with how awesome it looks with the running back and number zero I just I don't see any way that he's not a big-time contributor for this football team but I I guess we'll see man I I I thought we'd see him more last year we didn't but he looks he looks fantastic well yeah I I remember going out to training camp last year whenever he was a true freshman and watch an inside drill and that's exact I was like who is that guy and I totally expected him to you know to have some type of impact last season and I think you know in hide and sight it could be a good thing that he didn't you know for a bunch of reasons but right just the look The explosiveness that he has the the physicality the size 5'11 216 lbs is exactly what you want he is that is like the perfect running back size and it's it's going to be a more physical conference we know that and and he's got the perfect like size and he looks like an extremely durable type of guy I'm excited to see more from him you know I I'll give you the benefit of the doubt on a on a red shirt freshman year I you've heard me a million times I don't expect a whole lot from freshman whenever they first show up but he physically has all the tools you've been here for a year there's really not a whole lot of excuses anymore physically you can do it which I know he can he should be a major contributor in some way he just looks different than the other guys and when you watch be standing on the sideline yeah you you you go out there and you go you should be on the field so hopefully Caleb Hicks does everything he needs to do because this team needs they need game changers at the skill spots and maybe this is the best way to put it he's got all the common symptoms of a game changer at the running back position when you look at him and when you see him move so hopefully he can put it all together now Sam Franklin the transfer from UT Martin T he is first of all He's listed at 510 200 and they they like what they've seen from him in Winter workouts but he he is one of the guys on the offense really I'm most interested in seeing because I just don't really know he had some impressive plays at UT Martin but I think it's fair to say that he didn't blow us away with what we watched of him so I'm just I'm so curious to see how he fits into this offense yeah I you know there there's some good stuff from him it's just curious because when he hit the portal they snapped him up like that like it was the first portal Edition I think or at least one of them that we made um so there's something there that they see uh and maybe there's a previous relationship in recruiting or something but yeah I I'm I'm fascinated to see how he fixs fits into the mix sounds like the offseason went really good for him um you know if anything it's it's add some good depth and competition there because you know I think sawchuk's got the first little run at it but outside of that I think everything's up for grabs oh I completely agree when you look at the running back situation outside of Sauk I mean Caleb Hicks is extremely talented hasn't done anything Javonte barns is as excited as we were about him as a freshman last year happened like you can't just act like it didn't happen so he's kind of kind of back to square one with me like you're gonna have to prove what you got so I I would say the backs behind him and we'll see what Sam Franklin can do but Franklin's got an opportunity for sure if the other guys don't make the Improvement that they need to make I mean you can put put a a veteran guy out there that may not be quite as talented but is more reliable yeah and has has some more miles and like you said reliability is I I I hope we're not in a position where we have to settle on reliability I mean ultimately sometimes you end up there and that's just how things are but we are we are way too talented and too explosive at this position and this I'm not putting this on Franklin I'm just and I totally agree with what you're saying I just hope that we don't set have to settle for reliability if that makes sense like we have guys that are good enough to be explosive at this position and this could this could be should be frankly at Oklahoma I we we hav't ever been any good being average at running back for the most part like Oklahoma's had guys at running back and it's been the tip of the spear for this program as far as you want to go back and I'm I'm hoping that we get that again this year and I know that we've got a super talented group and everyone offers something a little bit different which we talk about we like in a in a position group so I mean I'm excited about it but you know there is that you know you've got the veteran that's carried uh the ball a bunch of times in Franklin that's the reliable guy I I just I hope we don't have to settle and it doesn't come down to that we're going to the SEC man we need explosive and talented at the running back position yep and maybe maybe Franklin is more talented and more explosive than what we saw on tape yeah yeah May maybe he is I I I don't know can't wait to find out yeah but that's where it goes back to Caleb Hicks and Gavin Sawchuk like you know Sawchuk has Elite Speed you know just looking at Caleb hicks's physical build that that's a guy that needs to be a factor like those guys need to they need to step up and be the guys at the running back spot and we'll we'll see with Barnes I I just don't know with everything going on there but yeah you can't just in this first year in the SEC especially with all the question marks along the offensive line I feel like you can't just roll for lack of a better term a guy out there running back you need you need a couple dudes I agree I agree uh you know the i i the SEC is really no different in in this aspect than anywhere else like if you want to go compete to win the the conference you got to have a back you got to have maybe a couple of backs and that's what's happened in this conference and it's it's really been no different the Big 10 is the same way um you know quarterback is always going to be right there at the top and you know running back and college football is probably a close second you know and I know receivers are getting more into it and and all that stuff but point is I think everyone understands how important the running back position is to this defense or this uh this football team it's it's important to the defense I know you're only always thinking about the defense the Run game is very important to the defense now Xavier Robinson is in early and listed it 6 foot 228 pounds so when you just see that on paper you go okay that kind of separates him from the group right he would be labeled as the big back and the coaches have been very pleased I mean Venable set it on here he he's done a better job than he thought he would and with the way that he's transformed his body since arriving in January so I feel like the one thing he's got going for him is he's just bigger than the other guys he's got a little bit of little bit more girth than the other backs and if you're a freshman and you're trying to get on the field one way to do it is have a different skill set than the other guys in your position group so I I don't know if he's a guy that's going to be ready to be the short yardage and goal line type of guy in the fall as a true freshman that's a it's a big responsibility but that question begins being answered here in Spring ball it's a big responsibility but it's also like really exactly what you want is to be a roll guy early in your career we don't need you worry about everything just keep it narrow right this is what we need you for that would I think that would go really well for him and he does have some good size and I feel like has at 228 he's leaned out some hasn't he from whatever like what he was listed at was like 240 right yeah yeah so that's that's good you know get the body comp where they want it and I'm sure he'll probably build from that point maybe a little bit more slowly but you know if you've got a 230lb running back that has good explosiveness and good speed and when we're talking about short yardage it's six or eight inches for a first down and there's a difference in tackling a 230 pounder than there is a 200 pounder it just is I mean it's the mass is harder to stop so if we could have ourselves a a big go-to short yardage and goal line back that'd be good A little Force equals mass times acceleration discussion here on the podcast don't don't say we don't teach you stuff people come on hey as a linebacker uh Scouting Report comes up first thing I go to how heavy are the running backs 195 200 no big deal 205 215 okay okay 220 230 you've got my attention all right you got my attention every every linebacker is watching that sideline whenever the 230 pound running back checks in we know exactly who that guy is yeah I I imagine all right let's get to call your shot we ask you guys your strongest opinion right now about U's running backs this first one comes from the tunnel Sooners says that we are going to be more than fine and people are overreacting about the running back position are people overreacting about the running back position well I guess it depends like what are they reacting to if they're reacting to the running back position last season I don't think they're overreacting um but just because in my opinion Others May differ that running back lagged behind last year doesn't mean that it has to moving forward I think you know it's I was going to say I think roster wise we in a better position now than we were a year ago but as I sat here a year ago after watching Sawchuk and Barnes against Florida State and what Barnes looked like through most of the season I think I felt really really good about what we were going to have at running back so you know I don't know we got a five-star coming in sawchucks coming off of a a solid end of the season we got Hicks we got uh Robinson like there's some really good pieces there we just got to see what it looks like you know I a lot of it comes down to like what you said earlier the offensive line and and the tight end position I think the tight end position is going to be a big Improvement overall from what we saw last year and that could help the running game a lot um but you know it's it's going to be up to these guys someone's going to have to to come from the group and I'm fairly confident that'll happen and then let's not forget number one running back recruit in the country will be here in the summer so yeah maybe this maybe this discussion changes I don't know I don't know we'll see I don't know we'll see I don't know I don't know what make of it I he looks really good on film but I don't know I'm I'm kind of torn how much what have you thought of from what you've seen of Taylor Tatum I think overall he's a really good athlete you you think about what he can do on the baseball field just I feel like the speed is there I just I you kind of don't know till they show up when it comes to what I would call the twitch yeah like does he have does he just is he just a good athlete with really good speed and it's high school football even though it's a high level of high school football or does this guy have the real juice that's you don't really know until they get there right that's I'm hoping he's got the real juice he's he's one of the he looks he looks great but he's not one of those guys that you look at and say that everything is fine he doesn't even need to be here we don't even need him until training camp like he's not like a big muscled up like finished product type of running back right now which I think is a good thing like there is there is room for improvement there when it comes to shaping his body and I'm sure schmidi will will take care of that during the summer but yeah I think that I I don't want to say he's raw that's not the right term but it's he's not maybe the best way to put it is some of these five stars show up and you're like damn that guy looks like how how much room for physical growth does he have Taylor Tatum for me with what I've seen that that's not the case like I think there is there is Improvement to be made and it will be made and that's why I say I I don't know what he's going to be as a player because I I don't think he's close to being a finish product physically as a football player that's I think that's what I'm getting at he's the number one running back of the country but it's Adrien Peterson is not walking through the door type of guy you know what I'm saying he's like no that's not what I've seen at least yeah maybe he is hopefully he is but I don't know I guess maybe I just haven't seen enough up to this point sure be cool if he was the next Adrian Peterson that would that would make that would make things more fun uh this last one comes from Kevin Burr who says going to need to break a few tackles this year against much better talent I expect us to be better because being worse is not an option and continuing to trajectory of getting better year over-year so I I agree Kevin I think that the sooner is going to be playing against better players this year so that's why I feel like some people think we are pretty critical of the running back position but it just is what it is man you got to have guys that that turn three yard gains into 20 yard gains and turn 15 yard games into 40 yard games like you have to have those type of guys and hopefully all these guys can be healthy and we'll see who who emerges as the you know three or four guys that are are major factors throughout the season yeah and you've talked about this before I think there's a a feeling that a successfully blocked running play is a wideopen hole with you know you know just the you follow the stripes to the end zone just not real life man that it's not a a a a really perfectly blocked running play can be we got to hat on a hat everywhere and then you are one-on-one at the line of scrimmage with the unblocked guy and you got to go make something happen I the best way I can put it is when you are diagramming run plays there's going to be an unblocked guy typically and the offensive staff turns to the running back group and goes that's your guy it is their job to make that guy Miss now does it make their job easier if the hole is wider absolutely there there's no doubt about it does it make it easier if a wide receiver goes and cracks safety and you are now one-on-one with a corner and a crack replace concept absolutely make Corners tackle but yeah this notion that everything should just be blocked up and the running back shouldn't be touched until five yards past the line of scrimmage this just not real life it's a especially not real life in the SEC so that's where we say it a lot you got to have a guy at running back that is dynamic man you got to have a guy that's got the juice and I I don't think we had a guy like that last season sawchuck at the end of the year you saw some flashes where you went okay he's he's looking he's looking close to 100% if he's not there he's close but it just needs to get ramped up man because life's going to be harder in the SEC the holes are going to be smaller you're gonna have to run through more trash to have a successful running game you just are it has to be more violent violence is the key all around just crank out at simplemodern.com national college football Roundup Ted the 2025 SEC scheduled it it was announced I thought the timing was a bit strange I did too but conference comes out and announces that sticking with the eight game conference schedule in 2025 now you have to play a a major non-conference game meaning you got to play a team from the ACC the Big 10 the Big 12 or a major independent but they're just flipping the home and away games from the 20124 schedule what was what was your initial reaction when they made this announcement um well I guess I was surprised there's a couple of things you know we we knew that the eight game schedule was going to continue we had heard that recently and we knew that what in four years you were going to play every team in the in the conference what we didn't really know is were they just going to take this year's schedule and flip the homeing away or are you going to get a whole new group and then switch back like I we didn't know that so I guess the biggest surprise was the timing of it and I guess disappointed isn't the the right word I guess I was just maybe the thought of seeing a totally different group of teams in 25 was kind of appealing but I mean the schedule's still awesome so I you know it's I don't have really any complaints I just I guess with all of the unknowns we got really the least exciting you know schedule of all of the unknowns that we had but really I guess it was the most likely I I was surprised and the main reason why I I don't know it just felt a little boring I don't know if that's the right word but I thought one of the big advantages of having a super conference right that's what that's what the SEC is I thought one of the big advantages was going to be that you can get really creative with the scheduling and also have fun with the scheduling including a schedule release I thought the SEC I I thought the schedule release and just the scheduling in in general it's going to be more like the National Football League the the NFL they have done an incredible job at making every little thing throughout the calendar feel big and this felt small it it just didn't feel like it didn't have the gravity that I thought it would have surrounding it right remember the big schedule reveal they did for the 2024 schedule where I mean we went to Rudy's in Norman and we did a show about the schedule yeah they revealed it we reacted to it it felt big this did not this felt like a they went hey this is the easiest way to do it here we here we go here it is and then you release it during March Madness yeah that's kind of the weird thing just got buried I did did we know the did we know the opponents whenever they did the final like date release at that point or no we knew the opponents we didn't know what the order was right when did we find out the opponents I don't remember is or did we find out the opponents when they release the dates I feel like we found out the opponents when they released the dates I don't know man I I can't maybe we we found out a little a little bit before but not way before remember a few things were being leaked yeah yeah yeah like the Tennessee thing got leaked Bama got leaked but I don't think we knew everyone did we I don't think so someone just started releasing the big ones but I mean the dates you can still do the scheduling release on the dates but I don't it's it's weird I don't know I and maybe they do they I assume they're gonna have a you know this is the exact schedule type schedule show but I don't know the timing the timing is the thing that really threw me off I agree it is it's late March man it's college basketball time what what are we doing strange when when you look at OU's schedule the non-conference you talk about the one major game Michigan and Norman that's gonna be so cool yeah that's that's September 6 uh your home SEC games remember it's just flipped so you're GNA have Auburn LSU Old Miss and Missouri at home and then your away SEC games oh boy get ready man because you're going to Bryant Denny in Tuscaloosa you're going to Williams Bry South Carolina and you're going to nean in Knoxville and of course you got you got Texas and Dallas those are three places that I I've never been but from what I understand Williams Bryce and neand especially like those places breathe fire so it's gonna be dude 2025 is gonna be fun I'm not I'm not saying I'm not excited about the schedule I am I just think the release and the lack of creativity yeah and the build like the lack of buildup around I don't know it just I thought it was odd don't waste great content whenever you've got it right yeah it's like it was like a like a hidden news dump which is like anti- SEC like hey I could even understand if all right there's all the basketball talk and spring football's about the start up and you want to get the conversation going about spring football but you could even have done it a little bit better timing and a little more dramatically I guess just to start to leak some of those details out I don't know but uh the schedule next year though is going to be amazing I mean you have home games against Michigan Auburn LSU Old Miss and Missouri and you're going on on the road for Alabama South Carolina tenness I mean this year's schedule is the best schedule we've had and I don't know how long maybe as longest I've ever been covering or affiliated with Oklahoma football and next year's schedule is better the question is what's the schedule look like the year after that or maybe the question is they released this 2025 schedule but is there a little Aster that said hey subject to change yeah because I everything going on in the ACC it makes me wonder is is the way that the SEC you know the members of it is it going to look different when 2025 rolls around because we we've talked about the legal battle that Florida State and the ACC are already in well the Clemson Tigers have joined the party uh they are suing the ACC the ACC has sued them back Clemson wants out of the gr of Rights they want they don't want to have to pay the exit fee we know that Florida state has made a similar similar argument Ted it's never good when the flagship schools in your conference are suing you and you're suing them back that's I I would say that's not the recipe for a great relationship and does not bring the conference stability no it really doesn't and I don't know you know the Notre Notre Dame got some assurances in the uh in the expanded playoff agreement that they've they've all come come to I don't exactly know what they are but like there had to have been a little bit of Hope that the ACC was like maybe this is our chance to get Notre Dame to lock into our conference that didn't happen and now you've got Clemson of Florida State uh coming after you legally there it feels like on the brink right oh the ACC feels like it is on the verge of just absolutely collapsing now I'm not a lawyer I do think it's interesting that Clemson especially is saying hey yeah you know the contract that we signed that says if we leave you get all the revenue to our home games yeah no no no that that's not how this works that's what you signed that's where it it is it feels like a slippery slope for everyone involved if you can just get out of contracts like this I what prevents any team from saying you know what it it looks more fun over there we're going to go over there I know we signed that contract that says we can't do that but we're gonna go see you I so this it's gonna be interesting to see how it all plays out and reminder the ACC granted rights not up until 2036 so I I understand why Florida State and Clemson won out right they don't want to fall behind they they won out for the same reason that U's leadership said hey we need to get out of here before we feel this feeling late yeah and that is that's the feeling that Florida State and Clemson and hey North Carolina they're the head or the chair of the Board of Trustees came out and had some interesting quotes basically saying that it feels like the ACC is representing the bottom tier of the membership at the expense of the top tier he did everything but say hey yeah we are on Florida State and Clemson's side on this well you know you go back a long ways and whenever all of the Oklahoma Texas stuff started going and there was conversation about what's going to happen with the ACC who would the SEC want out of the ACC and you know the names were interesting it was it was Florida State and Clemson which you would always say yeah that makes sense but the other names were North Carolina and I want to say Virginia and at Flagship large schools yeah why those well those are big population areas where the SEC has like those are big television market areas they've got no exposure there they've already got exposure in Florida and they've got Expo exposure around the other the southern part of the ACC they don't have television exposure in North Carolina and Virginia so those are kind of those are interesting ones but I don't know what's going to happen like if if people thought that college football has changed an incredible amount from like Co until now with the transfer portal with nil with conference realignment you ain't seen nothing yet it's about to change in a whole bunch of more dramatic ways than it already has and when do we get that final product to where we can say okay this is our new layout our new format this is what we have moving forward I don't know when we get to that but it's going to keep changing the revenue Gap is clearly a huge driver here with what's going on in the ACC the SEC in the Big 10 is just I mean it that Gap is grown and grown and grown between them and everyone else and I think Florida State and Clemson and even North Carolina look at it and go we this is this is unsustainable we cannot compete as this Gap grows year after year after year with the conference TV deals and with the new college football playoff TV deal and I I don't know how players eventually becoming some type of employee factors and all that but I know this if you're making more money and you got to pay the players you'd rather have more money so you can pay the players I mean what's the what's the potential Gap 40 50 million once they get into the new playoff and yet the scc's New Media deal comes out it was supposed to be somewhere around 70 million per team right it is yeah it is it puts you at a massive competitive disadvantage to not be in the SEC or the Big 10 yeah and the you know you've got just their standard conference payouts and then the new playoff deal where they're getting more money in the in the playoff situation it's just it's unsustainable for anyone that wants to be a competitive team that's not in the Big 10 just it's almost going to be be impossible to fall behind 50 million a year like how do you make up the ground with the payroll stuff that's coming I don't know that's you can't that's why they're going to court right the real winners we can never forget the real winners in all of this are the lawyers representing both sides congrats to you lawyers I mean the billable hours for this bad boy just got to be f fantastic you think watching college football is a billable hour if you're just trying to get we got to figure out the layout of the land here yeah so I spent a 100 hours this week uh watching watching Florida State to get a better understanding you'll I'll bill you for that but no I this it's GNA be a really interesting legal battle and I don't know how quickly it's going to move but you've got the private Equity piece that Florida state has talked about publicly I don't I don't know this thing's extremely interesting but ultimately I'm most interested in how it affects U football that's that's our whole thing on here could we see that 2025 schedule change I I don't know or is it a thing where it's not it's not happening until 20126 where they're going to go to a nine-game conference schedule with the addition of one or two teams from the ACC I well maybe that's the the reason you put that out now is because the speculation is going to be ramping up big time that in 26 like we're not they're not joining us in 25 here's our schedule maybe they're joining us in 26 I don't know yeah that that was my initial thought was oh that's a boring 2025 schedule maybe they just did that cuz they didn't want to put the necessary time in because they know more people are coming to the conference yeah that was kind of my t foil hat Theory this will get them off our backs for a while yeah I we'll see all right let's finish up with our winners and losers of the weekend but first oh you grill masters listen up did your Ranch delivers premium quality beef that is 100% raised in Oklahoma right to your front door go to dider ranch.com dier order online from the garage in your neighborhood as always Ted kicks off who do you have as your winner of the weekend well we've got College uh Hoops March Madness going on so I had to take a winner from there and I had to go to Gonzaga 10 sweet 16s in a row is that like is that one of the best like stretches in college sports that we've seen it is the least talked about how is it 10 or nine cuz I read nine maybe it's well does 2020 not count I think maybe that's it let's call it 10 then because I 10 years nine straight sweet 16 guess I am no no I let's just call it 10 because I'm fairly confident Gonzaga goes to the Sweet 16 That season yeah I I think that's right there's a pattern here it's a crazy accomplishment with you know there's been years where maybe they weren't expected to do as much there's been other years whenever they've been a massive favorite and to not fall victim to one of the the things that we see every year is the the the high seed go down and I it's just it's incredible is it's diff like I think like you think of canas as one of the the premiere name games in college basketball and they ain't close to that for sweet 16s I mean that's crazy over that that stretch so uh awesome now they knocked off Kansas it wasn't a full strength Kansas they were tired you could tell that they just didn't have it it was a down year for them well I think Houston sent them with their tail between their legs into the into March Madness well maybe they shouldn't have been there they got a hell of a break at the end of their first round game against Sanford that block was absolutely clean now you don't know if Sanford goes down and hits a shot and wins the game who knows but it it was it was one of those situations where you go did Kansas get the break they needed could this be an interesting unexpected Deep Run and then Gonzaga just absolutely smacked them around late in that second half yeah yeah that they ran out of juice you're right yeah ran out of ran out of juice like they didn't have the rotation that they had expected and missing one of your best players is is obviously a factor for them but um I it's G to be interesting to see what happens with Kansas you know I I think the invincibility cloak that they've been wearing in the Big 12 for some time I it it's different especially with Arizona coming to town as well uh uh Big 12 is is not getting any easier whenever it comes to hoops and there's going to be some more some more uh competition there at the top for Kansas but maybe ultimately that makes them better but I had to go to Gonzaga what an impressive feat uh by Mark F and those guys honestly I I've talked about this a lot I like to predict who your winner of the weekend who your loser of the weekend are going to be because we don't talk about it which is which makes it fun I really thought you were going to go with OU women's basketball come on man they got the win what did we do it it was I won't lie the way that that thing started not good but it would such a dramatic finish againsts Florida Gul Coast they shoot the open three I'm going no no no no no not overtime not overtime and a sire of relief for jidy baranek in the Sooners stud yeah uh needed some big plays there late now gol Coast has been kind of like the uh the Giant Killer over the last couple of years right yeah that's why I was very uncomfortable they had been you know they had been that in that 512 game two years in a row and won it yeah so what now we got Indiana tomorrow Indiana in their own house doable doable win get that win going to be aesthetically pleased Jersey matchup red and white white and red that'll be nice to look at it will be good it will be good I I really want them to win because I they deserve a sweet 16 birth they deserve it they do the program has been building and building now it's time to Let's seize the moment ladies here we go I feel good about it feel good about it who do you have is your loser of the weekend well I usually have have Otani in my uh my winners and losers as a winner it usually has to do with the unbelievable sum of money or some incredible feat that's never been accomplished in Major League Baseball before and I don't know maybe that's what this is I I have no idea what's going on here I guess otani's been apparently a victim of some theft or I don't know what by his interpreter that we always saw with him everywhere he went they were connected at the hip and I guess just over the last couple of days there's been some very weird things happening they found a there's been a bunch of what uh wires coming from otani's bank account to pay off what I guess was gambling yet supposedly accumulated by The Interpreter and that all gets questioned and talked about I guess ESPN had some leads about it started to to ask questions and then somewhere along the line it turned from paying off gambling debt to just straight up theft and Otani didn't know about it I don't know it's kind of hard to follow the story Gabe but well that's because it's two completely different stories that I think were what a day or two apart yeah and part of it is like the first story is well he got all these gambling debt he was embarrassed he couldn't pay it off Otani helped him out by wiring the money and then after that otani's like wait a second what's the story I I guess what The Interpreter was telling him wasn't what the inter interpreter was telling the team and ESPN and he found out about it through his new interpreter and was like wait what that's crazy dude you add another interesting wrinkle to it Mike Trout has said multiple times that Otani speaks solid English well I kind of wondered like at what point is he so that's where it gets that's where it gets even more complicated I I don't know you come out the whole thing seems strange you come out a a spokesperson for Otani which I guess was a new spokesperson and The Interpreter come out and say hey show covered the gambl debt to that bookie in California then lawyers get involved and that story completely changes to it being theft and Otani knowing nothing about it well which is it man well I think there's three possible scenarios scenario one he paid the gambling debt and they're worried about the Optics of him paying off the gambling debt second one is he didn't know about it didn't know where the wires were going or that the wires occurred so it was theft and the third is he ran up some huge gambling debt and the interpreters taking the fall for him is it bad that option three feels kind of I mean because changing the story that dramatically the guy was in The Dugout I mean they're over there playing it what is it in sh like they're they're over there playing baseball he wasn't acting he wasn't treating the guy like it's a guy that stole a bunch of money for four and a half million dollars yeah I all I know and I I assume we're going to get more details about this let's just hope neither of them bet on baseball because if the bats were on baseball it's gonna be a big problem and I don't know how long Otani suspension would be but that would be an absolute disaster for Major League Baseball if he's betting on college hoops he's betting on the NBA who cares that that is not illegal in in Major League Baseball but if there's some baseball bets in there that's all of a sudden this really odd story turns into the biggest story baseball's had in a long long time and Ted this guy is the face of the league we we talk very little baseball on this podcast and when we talk baseball about 50% of the time it's about Otani right yeah so the changing of the story just the way that it feels is the biggest name in baseball he's the most famous baseball player in the world this feels like it's on the edge of being an absolute disaster for Major League Baseball I but I we're going to have to wait and see what the what the truth is if we ever get it I I don't know man which you know let me say this the the availability of gambling to be able to do it by your phone anywhere you go at all hours is a very bad combination with young guys that have a ton of money spend a lot of time on the road I looking for some type of excitement like you know as well as I do gambling in NFL locker room on cards on paper rock scissors on throwing a tape ball from your ankle into a trash can like it doesn't matter what it is there's big Stakes gambling a lot in locker rooms and now that you can do it on your phone it's I would I would bet that 80% of professional athletes are gambling on Sports in some capacity and it may be higher than that daily get bet on your sport right right I I don't know what Major League Baseball's going to do if they find out who's betting on baseball and there's a Twitter thread out there this Anonymous account that's got like hey there were some bets big bets placed like in otani's I think I want to say it was like his hometown and there was days that Otani was pitching no one knows if they're credible or not but a lot of people were quote tweeting going hey if this stuff's true whoa so I I don't know how deep this thing goes I hope like he was wiring the money overseas and they were placing those bets overseas is that what that was or well like he there were sizable bets being made on how many runs he would give up how many runs the opponent would score that type of stuff gotcha that's that's what this completely Anonymous Twitter account was putting out but there was a lot of detail in the tweets well hey man you can you can't give them credibility though like you you just can't but it did make you wonder part of the reason I I need an interpreter to walk around with me all the time to where I can just claim well I I didn't know there's you know was kind of Lost in Translation you know I just I don't know what Happ I like the Dave Chappelle stand up I didn't know I couldn't do that I just it is it is on the brink of disaster for Major League Baseball that's that's all I know yeah wow not the attention the Dodgers were hoping they'd get when they sign the guy my goodness no kidding Wow Let's game that just crossed my mind is it too late no we got a almost a month okay well I'll send some text mess messages try to get try to get something lined up all right for my winner of the weekend we do not talk a lot of OU women's gymnastics on here it has a lot to do with us not knowing anything about gymnastics people that's the only reason okay but they won their third straight Big 12 title and they did it with the highest NCA team scorer in history sounds pretty dang good to me Dad yeah it's crazy that they uh they just keep setting records and getting better and better it's they are the Juggernaut of of NCAA gymnastics right now incredibly impressive with what with what they do I don't know how they do it I don't know it's like they've been so good previously and it's like every they're just handing out perfect tins left and right I guess I'm shocked that they got the highest score in history which they probably have like the top five high scores or something crazy but but I mean it's impressive no doubt now I also thought about going with Formula 1 been a while since we talked some Formula 1 and because ver sappin just wins everything except for this weekend Ferrari with the onew uh signs and lir finish in the Australian Grand Prix now it could have something to do with part of ver sten's card just kind of blowing up but hey congrats Ferrari way to go nicely done and so did someone I just kind of scanned the headlines did some did the leader crash on the final lap I went one to just and Hamilton went out of the race as well both Mercedes double elim did not it was George Russell and it was not a not a good situation it looked boy it's it's fine sounds like he's fine but it was kind of gnarly looking but I am I'm happy for Formula 1 someone other than for stappen little little change up for a change guy had won what like 10 in a row it was crazy easily like not just 10 in a row it's like he's on a totally different level than everyone else yeah now my winner of the weekend there's always someone in the in the tournament that kind of emerges as America's guy right and I thought it may be the gky guy that's his name right from Oakland that hit all the threes he kind of felt like maybe he was going to be the guy but no no no they had to battle it out to see who's the guy yeah he ran into the DJ bird show baby the big fella the big Lefty the sweet feet I feel like he's become the face of the tournament and the the NC State beats Oakland in overtime to send NC State to the Sweet 16 for the first time in 9 years and big DJ Burns 24 and 11 and was awesome in the overtime and NC State was one of those teams they were a bubble team and they have absolutely gotten hot at the right time seven straight postseason wins for the Wolf Pack won the ACC tournament what beat Carolina in the final of that and you look at DJ Burns dude is on a heater 20 in the ACC turnning final to beat Carolina had 16 in their win over Tech in the first round in 24 for them to beat Oakland and send them to the Sweet 16 and all I can think about is how he would look at offensive tackle oh man that's all I can think about Ted I watch the guy I see the touch I see the movement skills he's not an NBA player we all know that we all know that he's listed at 692 75 I think I would go out of limit say that's probably a little light that there is no way in hell that guy weighs 275 pounds he weighs 300 pounds at the very least the very least and DJ you're the face of the tournament you're America's guy right now but let's just see what a pass set looks like that's all I'm saying you know whenever he gets that ball and gets that that little running left-handed hook shot oh it's almost it's almost like a a pin pull you know just running that little hoop don't get me excited Ted what are you doing stop it in all seriousness just I don't know a year a year of training year of technique development I I'm just saying do you want to be rich or not dj I you know it's it's shockingly Pleasant to watch some inside basketball right to see a big post guy going to work and you know he's a really good passer when they come down to double and triple team him finding guys out on the wing or just carving up the Oakland Zone yeah it it's fun to watch now I I remember I watched that just happened on the ACC Championship game with North Carolina and I was like I like this team I like them a lot after they won that game I could have been one of the reasons we it was one of the reasons we didn't make the tournament but um they've they were one of my favorites going in and they've been fun to watch so far I hope the the fun continues we'll see I I'm just saying just consider it just consider I'm sure the football staff there has walked by him in the cafeteria once or twice and go hey what do you think I think everyone's considered it wouldn't shock me if he got drafted tour going just go through like a combine and a team in the seventh round yeah we'll we'll take a flyer why not flyer on you let's go no he but he's he's having a heck of a tournament and it's fun man how old is he is he he's a I want to say he's a senior so I'm guessing he's 22 or 23 let's give it a quick Google this is Elite podcasting 3 years old okay yeah so hey that's the thing about o lineman though the closer you get to 27 28 29 that's when the old man strength that's when you that that's the prime for o lineman so we just we just got to get him the fundamentals down he's about to get drafted side unseen we'll work with him for two or three years practice squad no big deal remember hey vital remember the guy from Baylor he ended up on a practice squad yep now I was told that he wasn't the most punctual guy and maybe didn't take it very seriously but hey he was there so I I don't know but hopefully we continue to see DJ Burns ball out but yeah want to see him in football pads real bad I won't lie my loser the weekend Kentucky as much fun as it was watching Oakland knock him off and as much fun it was watching goky Berry 10 threes on him and all the stuff he had to say after the game I loved it but John caliper man what 2021 missed the tournament 2022 lost in the first round 2023 lost in the second round 2024 loss in first round and remember that includes losses to St Peters and now Oakland I mean you're supposed to be that guy you're bringing in all the five stars you're sending all the these guys to the league got to win some tournament games man I mean and everyone's bringing up the $33 million byout I don't think people realize I I've been to a Kentucky basketball game I I've been there it's a much bigger deal than football there they will pay the 33 million and that isn't that Arena huge is it like 20 over 20,000 hug it's huge one of my high school teammates played there and it would it is a big deal so if A&M can pay Jimbo 70 whatever Kentucky will pay Cal 33 to go away but I just I don't know what they do you got all these ESPN analysts Jay billis saying oh it would be crazy if they fired him I the fans seem over it I I it just feels like a bad situation at Kentucky well it's a it's a really bad result in a situation that already it hasn't been great over the last couple years right with you know he's said some things and been real defensive and and then you hear him post game you know just saying like well you know I just apparently you just can't do it the way we've done it anymore you know you got all these transfer portal guys the older guys older teams but he's done that too and and not had success so I don't know it's remember they took sheway from West Virginia yeah it almost seems like he's not even acknowledging any shortcomings and just passing it off on well it's what basketball's become you know I I don't know it's weird I have always been a massive fan of head coaches that take the blame right I just think that's what comes with being the leader of an organization things go wrong you fall short of expectations like you put it on yourself and I don't get a lot of that from John Calipari I just don't so I I don't know but while things are bad at Kentucky they may be worse at LSU right now what what is the article about kimuli going to say I need to know when's this thing dropping Ted I don't know her statement that was what three and a half four minutes of prepared statement the day before you're playing a tournament game doesn't seem good I don't know what's in the article I don't know if anyone knows that Moy probably knows because they sent her a big old list of questions hey would you like to answer these sounds like this article has been building for a long time here's the way I view it though when something like this like okay oh I don't know if there's another I'm just was going to think of a good example but if an article comes out that Kim Moi is really difficult to deal with hard on players and assistant coaches um says rotten things to players I is anyone G to be surprised by any of that no she does it on camera constantly so like if it's just one of those pieces it's G to fall really flat you better have something in there you know what I'm saying it feels like there's got got to be something in there for her to address it the way that she did to go hire a law firm for defamation yeah yeah so I I don't know what it's going to be but and I don't know if this makes me a bad person or not it makes it makes the women's tournament even more intriguing yeah like you've got the Caitlyn Clark piece and hey did you see her it was slow motion it was an accident it kind of looked like she got punched in the face in that first round I didn't see it but I'm surprised it's not like the top news it feels like every time she gets bumped it you know it it's either huge news on the opponent or huge news on her flopping or something so I'm shocked it wasn't thrown uh directly into my face that it happened I'm sure I'll I'll find it somehow but you you just clearly weren't online enough it was all over the place but I was actually I was driving back and I was listening to listening to college hoops Non-Stop and like listen to the start of that game so yeah well I I'll say this though with with Moi the most shocking thing that I found out so far I had no idea that she won two national championships as a player at Louisiana Tech and won a gold medal with the 84 Olympics I didn't know that she could ball there you go I mean she could ball now you'll be glad to know that the accidental punch to Caitlyn Clark's face did result in an intentional foul two free throws and possession of the basketball there you go it is what it is man she's the she's the most famous player in college basketball she's gonna get she's gonna get some special treatment just deal with it people but yeah the women's tournament coming into it it was already intriguing you throw this Kim muli I don't know if you want to call it a scandal development whatever it is whatever it's going to be for me it just makes me want to pay more attention to it I am I am drawn to the drama last year it was it was uh it has to be the most attention ever on NCAA Women's tournament and I'm I'm guessing that this year's probably going to be the same at the end there's going to be a dramatic conclusion to this thing somehow I am I'm all for it hopefully the Sooners can keep it rolling come on let's go ladies that all you got to do is beat Indiana in their own building no well hey quickly we don't have to spend much do you like the the way they do it where they host instead of all yes neutral S I think that's I think you should be rewarded for having a successful regular season I kind of think so too it it's kind of how I feel about the early games in the college football playoff yeah just I like it yeah and it it creates a it's a better atmosphere in my opinion I think it results in better atmosphere all right birthday shout outs happy seventh birthday to Blakeley Sneed Happy 25th birthday to doho Powell happy 29th birthday to Landy Leandra Powell Happy 43rd birthday to Allan PCH yeah I
