ericon had passed away yesterday um he had a long battle with cancer as we were all well where um and fought until the very very end um so tonight is a bit of a tribute to him um a thank you for the service in that one season that gave us hope um you know a new owner came in he came in and it was a completely different change from Stuart Pier the season prior and so we're going to discuss that season the madness that went on and the excitement that sengar and Erikson gave us throughout 2007 and 2008 and potentially without That season we wouldn't be where we are today and we're certainly going to discuss that uh joining me tonight we've got my good friend Martin from the mancunian we uh forever hiding without a camera these days Martin how are you my friend yeah cheers mate asking I do apologize my laptop is currently in a shot it was Dre back today because the plan was to do a fan calling show tonight but that went tits up so it is coming back to tomorrow and there will be a an absolute amazing first season yeah and then the following summer Pedro nedro Neto comes in and a potential of Jayden Sancho I think I think Cole Palmer first name cole Palmer's the first name on that list though let's be honest no and he may be but you know what it wouldn't surprise me if Cole Palmer gets shafted in about a year you know why it's homegrown profit well ped 40 million their administration because the cor Bank of called all the loans in City you City basically were owned by JD Sports in an Ence John W David Mak um they were the guys who found who were running the club at the time and we did a lot of business with the court Bank on balloon Street and basically we basically maxed out our overdraft maxed out everything we had to sell right Phillips if you remember to Chelsea for 21 million yeah just to stay afloat um had no nothing to spend we were still paying off the Robbie Fowler situation with his wages and the fee um David Bernstein had left due to that W had come in done a magnificent job keeping us a float and then taxing came in which was Stefan Balon at the time was on our board was the financial advisor I think he was the actual Chief was he the chief executive at the time what was he at the time I can't remember Stephan boson was on our board at this point yeah because he did he facilitated the taxing Shinra take over um yeah and then it was very late in the window if you remember very very late three weeks before the start of the Season wasn't it that sang came in um and faty yeah uh of course we were all very excited I remember obviously Sven coming in just had previously been England manager had a lot of offers from clubs in Europe as well not just Manchester City from watching the documentary and I don't think anyone could quite believe that he' come to be honest I couldn't back then as a kid just knowing him from the England manager job to then turning up at Manchester City one day I was a bit shocked um it wasn't something I was expecting especially with Stewart Pierce previous um I show me age now I was I was 27 at the time you were what I am today nearly I'm still only 26 but it was bad it was and of course it came in it made four signings um Valerie banov that was in one day that was in one day Rolando bian Javier gido and vedan shaa shaa went on to have a very good career in the Premier League um not just for Manchester City but also for Spurs um not many people seem to remember that I don't think either um but yeah four signings um Valerie bov for me looked looking back um in looked like a very very good player but unfortunately injuries completely ruined was he sign from Fiorentina as I remember no I think he went go to I know he did his Cruise [ __ ] in the derby two Gam in which that was it was the end of him yeah sadly it was and he he you know he excited us at times you know it looked like a very very good player we had on our hands um but yeah I'm just looking here he came from Palmer um pal oh no yeah he did come from Fiorentina sorry and then he went to Palmer I I remember as buying we bought mtin we bought 10 eight 10 players Martin Petro Alano Alano jelson Fernandez the young Swiss midfielder he's still playing to this day I think as well you know we only bought him at 18 he was a b when we I think he's still playing we bought harier gido as you said Charlie charuca we bought orando biane for 8.8 million from some Italian Club soon soon reana want to say I think yeah it was a bit of a Mad Season .8 million there was a lot there was a lot it was basically a whole new team that we bought oh I'm sure we bought Casper schmeichel yes or was he already there Joe har was it for, I think P bought him just before from shwb yeah um benjani later on and oh yeah har redn telling to get to get to the airport and hurry up and uh you know we missed three flights already and he said I didn't want to leave well thankfully he left as we'll discuss later on but yeah it was a bit of a Mad summer um a lot came in a lot of money was spent for us anyway um you know a club that languishes in mid-table um so yeah it was it was it was a crazy summer now looking at the season as a whole um I do have some little little bits for us to have a look at Martin um if you would if you know we can take a look so the season stats these are all curtesy of Stat City as well so if you haven't checked them out I will add their Link in the description um do some amazing content for all us blues um to check out uh so we had 45 matches we won 19 drawn 11 and lost 15 which if you give us them stats now we'd say that's a bad season but this was a very very good season for us um we ended ninth in the Premier League um you know looking at some of them teams you know they'd like this form back the likes of Everton Blackburn Rover and the bsouth um some may not like to see where they are today um the likes of uh Fulham and Newcastle but and Spurs even an 11th but yeah looking at that season as a whole that was a good season for us Martin don't you think think it was season ProMed I think it was also the first season we finished in the top 10 I believe in the top half well for a while we we did finish I'm sure we finishing the top on Keegan as well um is all we've played since Keegan to be fair yeah it was there was a over the club due to pace and I don't want to speak Hill of people who but Pace had Su the life out of the team the Takeover it happened we were we were promised Millions upon Millions at the time it wasn't billionaires it was millionaires multi-millionaires rather than billionaires um he came in and he promised the world obviously you'll go into it later on what eventually happened and killed it all um but yeah there was all by the way we've got to talk about the emergency obiously Michael Johnson as well yeah I was just to get oners because he came onto this scene and he was what what Yaya T became we thought he was going to be my dad's words were was as close to Colin Bell going to get with him I watch the documentary back today and I don't well I do know happened uh and I'm not going to go into it because I don't want to do that on players um sadly the demons the Demons of football got a hold if there the best way I could put it is if there's ever the best example of too much too soon yeah he was it wasted potential that's so that's so sad to say there's too much too soon and I think looking back I think because of the situation we were in as a fan base I think we went a little bit over the top with him and it went to our heads it went to his head it went to the club's head and that injury killed him he never came back from it and yeah it was yeah it's just it's a sad story when you look at what's eventually happened to him yeah it was it was tough and of course um it is what it is and you know hopefully now he's you know on the men and you know he's doing something with his life I think the last time I heard of him he had an estate agents with it in Manchester or somewhere nearby um so you know whatever he's doing it's such a shame that a player of his caliber could never reach the potential because that could have been one of our the first ever Superstars for the club he PHS Colin Bell I'm going to be straight with you luk I think he could have been bigger than than Phil Fen had he been used way I'm gonna be honest with you pep would never have used him in the way Spen used him well I mean he did that make sense I mean Capello was a big fan of him constantly coming to watch I don't think he ever got an England call up um I could be wrong I can't really remember to be honest but there was always a lot of people watching him and I think other clubs were watching him as well and like we said even Sven said it in the documentary he signed in for Leicester and he just wasn't the same player unfortunately it all said I think I think there was too much pressure put on him at too much age far too much pressure we had a lot of young exciting players you know we had Steven Island back then you know um he was another exciting one we had a lot of kind of different Dynamics in that Squad back then when you had the likes of Richard dun the old experienced head and then you had some exciting youngsters the likes of Michael Johnson Steven I share you funny Steven Island story from That season it's not about his grandmother is it that he said died three or four times that that was that that was the exact same season yeah I remember that ringing he kept no s you you not he knew he absolutely knew that his grandma hadn't died and his Grand I think one of the grandmother had already died I've never known a player of about 15 grandmothers I mean remember I know how we got caught Sven sent flowers the club sent flowers to the family and they went what you on about and I think the family were a bit confused on why you sending me flowers I'm not dead I mean I'm sure so can't me BB M or someone in the comments I'm sure it's weent flowers and he got caught that way he it's just the gust of him to even try and attempt it but of course this season just it just brought excitement man so then brought something back to the club that we hadn't seen in a good few seasons since Keegan we were playing football we were enjoying ourselves and we were I mean at one point we were top of the league and we were thinking what's going on a few games in you know we had we had I was at the West Ham game that's what I was just about to get on to that first game of West Ham away at up Park where the hope is there it's a new season it's a new manager we didn't know what to expect and then the next thing you know Rolando bian puts us one n up and then Dar was it Darius Vel who got the set no it wasn't was it was it Vel got the second yeah yeah no no it wasn't it was giovan Giovani sorry and he came up with a lot of clutch goals that season um which we'll get on to in the next slide but NE Manu has run down the right and then see him again with his um oh what what did Chris Kamar say with his oh my God something leg telescopic leg that was it when he extended his leg out to pass it and it was his telescop basically did a rabona did a rabona Down Wing pulled it back turn C turn totally yeah C turn totally lost control of the ball and basically stuck his leg out as much as he try Stretch Armstrong to try and tow pooke it into J his J was right was right in front of us as well at the way end because it was a baking up day I got sunburn I had hair back then I wasn't bold um Martin with hair love to see that yeah I have hair but yeah it was a great start I remember Al Alano all we talked about on the coach back was Alano yeah I think Sven gave him the freedom to go and play as well didn't ask him to do a job particularly just let him go out and play and I think even Alano attributes his kind of success in the Premier League short Liv but success um down to the ability that Sven just let him go out and play didn't ask him to do much else and that was a good thing about Sven Sven sometimes just let players do what they needed to do and you know unfortunately there was sometimes systems like in England with the golden generation he tried to shoe horn players in but thankfully at city um and yeah beyond belief we did stay in the top four for quite quite a while I think until was it top six until New Year and then we top we were top for the first four games because I remember the Derby game first one at home that was remember Sven coming out you'd honestly thought Pelle had walked out on the pitch there was that emotion behind him and it was like you said earlier it was more of the pinch yourself because we couldn't believe at the time that spango and Erikson former Lazio manager sorian was it Sor but former England manager because if you remember in our minds that was the second England manager in a row we had Keegan that game was that oh he's leaving England G to full coming to was and then sweno and Erikson and that was like the first proper Stella name in a while after Keegan and I think it was the pinch myself moment yeah and then we we beat them one nil obviously with the goal which was just ex Exquisite from M that was when Michael Johnson put himself on the map with the outside of the foot against Derby at home yeah to the nor stand yeah that was that was if anyone plays football you will realize how hard that is to do with that kind of power you can do it with a lot of finesse but not power um but um Dash that was the season after um that was the 2008 2009 season under mugh um but we definitely will be doing a stream reliving that one because that will be very very interesting and apparently when I was not talking about the 11:00 stream oh you pluging your stream here Martin are you doing no no no no about when I was outside the at 11: pm on that day oh right oh the H oh the uh dildo incident yes the uh yeah uh Rabino thought he was signing for Chelsea then man united didn't have a clue who man city was and that's what the whole fun was about because that guy unfortunately is currently in prison now I think he got charged this year for I won't say what the crime was because it's disgusting but I do wish we had signed him oh it was the biggest mistake we should have signed somebody else for that money we could have signed a lot better that was a present that was a present to the fans and that was Shake Mano saying I'm here and of [Laughter] course oh Steve Martin ordered a 12 inch but got the wrong type whatever you're into Martin but whatever you're into you don't need to tell me but um but yeah obviously it was a great season 20072 2008 for us um in no particular reason because we did it twice the double over United a league win Home and Away against them lot with the iconic benjani celeb and an absolute screamer from Giovani what do you think this no it wasn't the Turning of the tide but do you think it was that statement of we're here now I know we hadn't been taken over yet but this was some statement from the club we hadn't beat him at Old Trafford since 1974 and we hadn't done the double over him since 1970 we' been waiting a long time Martin I'm not can you still hear me yeah yeah yeah I'm not it was weird because I remember the da and I remember the the atmos the best by the way best atmosphere ofab have ever been in that one which one the home away the home and the away one um but it was at the time as a club we were still in that let's just beat United twice we were still in that M we were in that as long as we beat them it didn't matter that was our trophy back then I know that and because that's their trophy now yeah exactly that's what I mean we we were very different back then it was a very different club with a very different mentality with a very different mindset we were everything that United were not and we were proud of that one back then and I just remember M Richards um everyone just being amazing Richard done as well the the double tackle on TZ yeah the Richard dun and yeah it was it was a great day a lifelong City fan as well you know getting on the pitch to beat United of course you know it was I see beyond belief does make a good point but I don't believe it they were distracted with the Munich commemoration we blindsided them at the swamp I think we were you know there was a lot of concern that City fans weren't going to behave before the game I don't know if you remember that obviously you know but I think Sven brought a kind of class for us to go there and just you know be exemplary obviously guests you know commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Munich air disaster you know we behaved exemplary and as a result we got a good result on the pitch in my opinion I think yes yeah we did definitely um think I don't think they were blindsided I think they you know they're a side that under Fergie wouldn't have got blindsided by something of this can I Stray with you they were in the attitude of we can just do you know the attitude when you say just turn up and you beat them like he used to do with Spurs all the
