hello and welcome to data cross puzzles my name is Kevin here for solving it softly where we're going to go through the Wednesday crossword puzzle from The New York Times but before we do that let's get warmed up with the mini crossword we're going to check out the mini crossword from Tracy Bennett and uh get warmed up so looks like a fairly uh filled gri here uh just from this the silhouette here uh so it might take a bit of time I'm guessing it's going to take about a a minute and 30 seconds that's my time that's what I'm going to guess um I already accidentally um escaped into this so uh it's already starting at two seconds but let's get going with this and see what I can pull out here so tool for swabbing the deck maybe a mop uh doorbell sound would be a ding ding dong but okay maybe something else vertical lines on graphs in math are uh uh Y axis uh crept around in a weasy way or although vertical lines would be X or yeah I think Y axis if you're talking about that I'm thinking with x equal to zero uh crept around in a weasy way wrapped around in a weasy way snuck snuck around snuck it's not looking great top Turvy or maybe a mixup is a bungle situation that's what I was looking at there signs of things to come our Omen so it's not Topsy Turvy what is that oh no it's not it's not snuck it's something else bothersome is pesky uh okay Angel Hair top Topp topper uh cheese uh it' be uh spaghetti and sauce I don't know something like that skin bub assist but then what is this so it's not that it's crept around slunk slunk oops not crime uh chime a Halo is an angel hair topper if you're an angel and you have hair you got a halo over top I guess okay so uh good warmup thanks Tracy for that mini crossword okay so now let's do the bull crossword here and this puzzle comes to us from Jesse Goldberg this is Jesse's fourth puzzle uh published in the New York Times overall his second Wednesday and he has a 53% freshness score on average looking for some difficult fil maybe some fun stuff going on uh no rebuses so that's kind of a giveaway we're not going to find a Rebus here today uh because it doesn't show up in his stats um maybe that's a a downside of of previewing the um the Constructor here give gives away a bit of the puzzle but uh still in any event we'll um I'm sure this will be fun this will be a themed puzzle so let's get started with uh with this one here chicken par Maan something like that I don't know blank blank blank blank blank in fat wait why is there 1 two 3 4 five there's five letters but then like what is the parmesan in fat chicken parm something counselor on the Enterprise I didn't watch Star Trek uh really at all um so I don't know sexual attraction with the hots maybe the hots is that still a phrase um I don't know hexter qualifier maybe in my humble opinion actress Davis could be Gina Davis I guess chicken parthy chicken par I don't know this is not looking great the opposite of vertical the uh abbreviation of that would be h r horizontal I'm not saying it the other way uh so uh lover boy is Romeo oh so this has got to be the theme so we have blanks we're filling in the blanks so referring to referring tther referring to referring to the rest referring to the rest okay so you can kind of see like spaces in here where we have a blank and we have a space and we have a space so we have a t blank and then another word blank blank blank and then blank s and so it's other so that's a word that fits uh on its own so it's it's a word um and it's also broken up so it contains another word contains the and we can bookend it with an O and an r and we can make a phrase out of that okay so that's going to be the theme um not too not too tricky uh this might be a good one for beginners uh so I'm guessing chicken parm high in fat chicken parm high in fat maybe M chicken chicken part high in fat oh right because it has to be a word so chicken part high in fat oh this is very clever I didn't even notice this okay so a chicken part that's high in fat is a thigh and referring to the rest is other wow what a wow this is this is a classic already I can see this is amazing uh oh I have heard of TR TR or TW TR Troy so if you have the stage you're on so is on it's that tense and then last word at times um I don't know I don't uh last word at times the end maybe the end hurdles for Doc oral orals right the hurdles for doctoral students are orals oral exams Ogden Nash uh is I don't know what he wrote but I mean apparently he wrote a door is what a dog is perpetually on the wrong side of interesting units of x R exposure don't know in oh oh wait a minute it's got to be radiation just in general but then I don't know if this works no because it's it's not a word in the manner of his Allah a court call could be a let referring to tennis clay figure in Jewish folklore are I guess scales textures unbelievable no okay so galum no Gollum what am I doing why did I had the a in there a Gollum is a clay figurine in Jewish folklore and shaking my head is the textures unbelievable so they're indicating um abbreviations by saying that this is what a texter would write which is kind of in a I mean isn't it a bit archaic I mean you can we're not limited but it's kind of a vestage of uh the times where you were limited to the number of characters when you're texting I wait id idea that terrifies theat phobes I'm GNA have to look that up I'm guessing it's somebody who's afraid of death that's so interest this is this is probably one of my favorite CR wordss in a long long time this is amazing subject for Milton fredman oh it was econ so it's not going to be end here Spanish-speaking neighborhood aario maybe and the last word could be by okay Bronx politician with a noted okay so we're looking for a phrase but now we're also looking just for a a um a sound just go a hem yeah can I can I stop you there can I interrupt you 411 is info pictures position wait going to be they often mix up lyrics doctors I don't know um going places are John's slang for a toilet oh DJs often mix up lyrics so there we go that was a pretty um straightforward once I understood the theme uh even though these were like not too difficult to tease out they're very very clever uh I would give this like a definite thumbs up for if you are just getting into the crosswords maybe you've you've you've solved your Tuesdays you like you can get through some Tuesdays you maybe tried some Wednesdays but you know some of them are a little hard this one might be able to um you might be able to reason your way through some of these which is which is good for beginners because they don't have the you know big knowledge base of crossword e and and that um so the freshness definitely helps for this puzzle uh or for any puzzle with for beginners to learn um I I think I don't know I could be wrong on that I think I think freshness is good for this um so what what else did I want to look at I wanted to look at um thanatophobia does uh like psychology with uh people on their um at the end of their lives um and I guess she would be along the lines of thanatology uh she does the uh talk nerdy podcast which is great uh you can hear some great stories from scientists and uh people who have a um a expertise in a given topic so also let's see um uh what did I want to look up the word itself I think comes from Greek mythology I don't know if they mention it all right Thanos the personification of death is s Thanos is that an actual person or is it just uh death incarnate maybe it's always fun to like go back and look at the mythologies son of Nicks and brother of hypnos has no father though the ayy okay there's also another person I wanted to look up e Joseph Cosman he was an inventor from 1918 to 20 2002 so lived 84 years spud gun toys okay so he was just a just had a clever saying I guess it's like when you're broad mind and narrow waist begin to change places when they begin to swap is middle age that is definitely true it's good to keep a broad mind though still uh there's there's definitely some things you got to uh corner off and uh you know narrow your mind a bit on be a bit firm so that is the puzzle uh for Wednesday so uh let me know how you did in the comments and uh I look forward to seeing you again tomorrow on Thursday we'll warm up with the mini
