[Music] what up and welcome to Ras screen YouTube channel and here's my review of the new series city of God the fight rages on let's rock this now we all remember the 2002 Oscar nominated movie city of God right I love that film so greedy so raw so unflinching well this is the sequel series and it's features some not all but some of the original cast members reprising their respective roles and I'm pleasantly surprised by how many of them were willing to revisit and continue this story and you know what doing it in an episodic format this time around is the right move because it allows for us the fans to further explore rocket and his community in a way that really dives into how conflicted they feel this love and hate relation ship that they still have about their deeply troubled neighborhood special thanks to HBO and Max streaming service for granting me the advanced screeners and now that I've already watched it let me tell you city of God the fight rages on is hard-hitting and visceral I mean returning to Brazilian slums has never looked so intense anxiety inducing and cinematic and just like the original film this sequel series is also a masterful compelling crime drama now I was told that this is just a miniseries maybe not who knows but this much is true the episodes leave me wanting more in city of God the fight rages on it's 20 years after the events of the movie the release of a young trafficker from jail puts the favella city of God back into the midst of a power struggle residents find themselves trapped between traffickers militia business people and the government but the need to break free from this cycle causes the community to unite around a project to confront the oppressor starring Alexander Rodriguez Roberta Rodriguez and Thiago Martins directed by Ali miva and Bruno Casta and executive produced by Fernando mereles this show is definitely for us the fans of gangster mobster stories but what you need to understand is that this is not a romanticized version of such stories I mean it's not good Fellas you know nobody here is wearing suits or shiny shoes city of God is all about taking you to the dirty streets where the Crim Lords are just as raggedy looking as their little army who wear flipflops while carrying AK-47s and AR-15s the showrunners of city of God the fight rages on truly and Faithfully capture The Surreal environment and the vibe and the atmosphere that Fernando gave us more than two decades ago everything about this show success F aims to make you feel uncomfortable about the poverty stricken conditions of some of the regions in Brazil Society Alexander Rodriguez came back as Rocket and he's now all grown up and has a genz daughter who may be doing something vulgar as her side Hustle but she's also very outspoken critiquing her dad's work that inherently exploits victims of gang wars now the episodes I've seen show that rocket truly wants to be more than just a grim photojournalist but that intention however good it may be goes against the nature of the media business he's involved with meanwhile there's this new power struggle between curio and a rival gang initiated by curio previous godson bradoock I mean there's something Shakespearean tragedy about that whole motivation and it provides some of the craziest shootouts I've seen on television this year the juxtaposition between the disturbing violence and the vibrant favelas culture of the people caught in the crossfire also allows for some heavy emotional toll and some philosophical questions of when does this madness end and at what cost just like the original movie this show is also very well edited well performed well directed all of the actors across the board are very committed their characters are almost like an extension of themselves as though they speak from firsthand experience the story is easy to follow and brimming with an energy that's both scary and riveting the constant conflict of personal interests versus Community interest is very profound and a lot of the Dynamics also reminds me of HBO's other Masterpiece the wire in which politics corruption coverup and shocking brutality are are for the course now I can only assume and perhaps correctly assume that there will be some audiences in Brazil who will not like the fact that the ugly parts of their society are once again depicted in such portrayal some might even accuse this show of being poverty porn that just like Rocket's job is also profiting off of the daily sufferings of Brazilian working class poor but what is art if not about being truthful and unless parts of city of God the fight rages on are overly exaggerated and they're welcome to debunk it I'd say this is a great show that should not be ignored much less overlooked so yeah overall I give CD of God the fight rages on the rating of four and a half out of five if this is just a limited series if this is just a one-off thing and there's not going to be subsequent Seasons Beyond this then so be it but it may well just be one of the best damn new shows I've seen all year [Music]
