SMU vs. 15 Memphis: Game Preview & Score Prediction

yo what's up this your boy Derek bran strik sports.com today's video is going to go ahead and tomorrow's match up between the Memphis Tigers and SMU Mustangs the SMU Mustangs are the tiger second opponent on their 2023 2024 AAC schedule tiger start off conference competition with a 1 and0 record after um escaping um to Oklahoma with a victory by by the hands of Caleb Williams as he sung that three to um give them the lead over um you know the golden hurricanes in that matchup they come into this game you know kind of you know it might come in this game might be on a little on a slow start on a kind of on a sluggish start depends you know um they had a flight delay that occurred you know while they were in um Tulsa Oklahoma that delayed the flight they got back on I believe was a little later in the day on Friday and you know they only give them a little a little bit you know you like a day like a day and a half to like prepare for um tomorrow's match against SMU who who is coming to this game winning uh four straight games in a Four game winning streak similar to how TOA was as well they won four straight games um Memphis also coming into this game a bit weakened as well with an injury by um to uh Caleb Williams as he took that fall and uh two I believe it was what Wednesday's match up against not Thursday my bad Thursday against Tulsa and he's he'll probably out for the year you know they haven't really give out put out like an official like diagnosis of what occurred but all they saying is that is um a knee injury and he probably won't be back this season this season man um probably won't be back it's unfortunate what happen um but somebody has to pick up the slack you know what I'm saying and um you're missing a lot you're missing a lot of what Williams of uh what Mills brought to the table for the Tigers you know leadership um a reliable guy even though he had dipped in regards to his production he's his scoring but he's a he was a guy that can um come in and play start of minutes if you need him to and that's what he was pretty much doing and he could come he was a guy that came in could give you you know 15 11 17 points coming off the board and he was a great defender you know and he had a strong locker room presence you know what I'm saying so somebody has to come in and you know pick up the slack for what Mills um bought to the table for the Tigers you know um maybe that could be some something that uh peny hard R can like you know stagger the minutes between Jaden Hardway Ashton Hardway and Jaylen um young the guy the transfer came from um UCL but somebody is going to have to pick up that that role because um that's you know you don't want to you know put everything on your starters you don't want to like overplay them overwork them because you don't have a strong bench you know what I'm saying so that's um that's going to be vital going down the stretch and I know I seen today um some a few people you know have kind of like overacted in my opinion because of the loss the teams that Memphis beat you know prior to starting um n um competition n conference um prior starting AAC competition took L's recently um Villanova well V Villanova was was fra anyway Clemson lost today U Arkansas getting blown out um got blowned out today by arburn Virginia got blown out in North Carolina State I really I really don't Rec concerned about the other teams and what they do because unlike La unlike previous years Memphis is is in a good spot you know what I'm saying they're in a really good spot right now and I just don't think they're gonna miss the tournament you know I notice those wins those wins against those teams you know pay huge dividends if they have winning records and all that because it you know it it's the type of qualitive win that gets you into the tournament but Memphis right now is in good in good shape man it's in really good shape and another thing I want to talk about is a lot of you know fans have you know and everybody's TI to their opinion but they've kind of complained they're complaining about how Memphis has played lately and believing is saying that you know they're playing down to the competition and all this other stuff um that may be true but it's good to see Memphis playing hard games it's good to see um teams opponents give Memphis a tough way to go because that that way that way you find out what type of Team you have you know what I'm saying it's good that way I'm glad I'm glad that that game between Tulsa and Memphis was close because that way you know a lot of people won't feel as though they could just stroll into the um the conference uh competition and play that means that they they they can't take days off you know what I'm saying and that may be that's probably gonna be the challenge for Penny harway going forward you know is to keep his team locked in you know what I'm saying because they've had some close ones lately you know Vanderbilt was a was a tough game um Austin P you know was pushing them for a little bit to a certain extent and they was in control they was in control of that toting game but so you know I think uh the losing Caleb Mills kind of um messing with the momentum of of the team but as for this match up man um SMU is on a full game winning streak um best their best game their biggest win right now was against um Florida State you know it was against Florida State um proud of kicking off AAC competition now other than that man they don't really have a lot of you know to me the their schedule is a bit was a bit light in my opinion was a bit light and any the games you could have won that you should have won like um I won't say should have but the Marky games on here you kind you lost you know outside of um beating Florida State you lost to A&M that could have been a nice win for you you beat West Virginia but you come back and lose to Wisconsin um took a l to Dayton um B only by two lost Arizona State but other than that man you went on a full game winning streak winning streak after that against Florida State Houston Christian muray State Charlotte Charlotte who beat um FAU today and now you play Memphis you know and based on you know the scouting report for um SMU they're a really good defensive team really good um defensive team in um college basketball but like I said you know you got to wonder um who you did this who you did this this stuff against to have these type of rank rankings on defense the quality opponent that you had that you played against outside of the conf you know like I said to me that schedule was a a bit liked but you know they took advantage of it you know right now they're 104 and I believe in my opinion are in a good spot you know they're 24 in the country and adjust the defensive efficiency and they only giving up 61.6 points per game this season so that's 12 in the 12 in U scoring defense and um fa good percentage is um field good percentage defense is ranked second in the country behind um behind uh Houston so those are some those are some um some good numbers some good statistics right there but um they don't really have you know they're not a team that's going to you know pour down from three they're not that type of squad you know it's kind of you know similar to other teams in the America you know play like play like to play defense um you know not excuse me not as flashy you know what I'm saying but we'll see how it plays out you know you got um leading score um Zur Phillips Zur Phelps reand um Samy Williamson BJ Edwards is uh the leading assist guy going up against um a Memphis team that's you know led by David Jones averaging 20.9 points per game David Jones also leads them leads Memphis in rebounds Javon qu leads them and leads the team in assist so with that being said you know are we in store are we in store for a let down on the verge of seeing the Tigers excuse me seven game winning streak come to in that it's possible it's very possible you know because it's college basketball and I keep saying this all the time anybody can get it any anybody can go down on any given day or any given night Any Given Sunday any given Saturday you know and the Tigers according to the match of predictor it's 73 point there a 73.1 chance percent chance that they defeat ASU SMU they only give SMU a 26.9% chance you know dur on a full game winning streak You Know M on a seven game winning streak you know really good defensive team you know it'll be interesting to see what they do to um slow down um David Jones can David Jones bounce back from the type of game that he had he didn't tell me he from a scoring pred a scoring perspective he was a little off but overall man he contributed I felt like he put in his work on that day he I think he pulled down eight rebounds had 17 points um forced a couple turnovers so overall overall he had a really good game a sound game in my opinion you know um you know the the tces game is close you know I think if Memphis you know these but these are the type of games that they win that Memphis win you know um low scoring defense you know forcing turnovers that's that's that's what's going um you know win this game for either team who can play the better defense who can force the more the more the more for Force um the most turnovers get points off those turnovers and get rebounds on all on offensive side that's what that's what's going to win this this uh game because I don't it's not really SMU is not a team that has a lot of size I think they um you know match up well with Memphis Memphis may be a bigger team you know you got n Kuan Tom coming off the bench and he has provide a spark to this team a spark to this team but um it's going to be determined by who can um who plays the better defense who plays the better defense who comes down with the shots who can force uh turnovers rebound give rebounds on offensive side the ability to uh provide points all those turnovers gonna win the game for either team you know so with that being said I'mma go with Memphis to win this game and extend their winning streak to eight games I got him win this match up by a score of um 78 73 over SMU 7873 over SMU they'll in the Mustangs for game winning streak and their winning streak will continue and it'll be extended to eight at when this once this game is all said
