all on the show it's the Seattle Mariners going up against the Oakland Athletics all right we'll be back to get this one started after this your 2024 Oakland [Applause] Athletic just about set to go now and pitching in this one for Oakland number 38 four pitch guy he's got some options to work with in terms of keeping hitters off balance so we'll see how he decides to utilize those weapons through this start here and whether or not he's able to mix them all in early or if he wants to hold something back a little bit later maybe second third time through the order and give them something they haven't seen it's tough when you know a guy's got that in his back pocket as a hitter you really have to stay on your toes and he deals all right now he may have not liked either of those first two pitches or agreed with the umpire's calls but at this point he's going to have to bear down and be ready to hit anything close to the zone and a pitch close one doesn't get the call and that's ball one close pitch there and he's kind of wondering where it missed you know getting a feel for each umpire strike zone is something that pitchers and hitters really have to think about and work on from game to game and sometimes from a bat to it [Applause] bat and a foul ball he stays alive and another ball definitely a swing and Miss slider down and in he finished that really well just couldn't get him to offer at it popped up foul territory behind the plate langers makes the grab one up one down and now we check out the Mariners lineup and the key to victory for them here get their starter some run support early o if they can get him that run support early it's likely the other team folds because they know how dominant he can be once he gets settled in so put pressure on that other team right away jump out to a lead early and a few runs is going to feel like 30 now it's Randy a Rosara there's a strike this is a hitter who takes his game to another level playing at night one down base is empty ground ball up the middle that's a base hit man those are the types of hits where you don't feel any vibration in your hands whatsoever such a good feeling just kept it simple played Pepper with the middle of the infield and took it back where it came from and there was just no one there to knock it down digging in Cal Raleigh and that's in for a strike fast ball for a strike don't play situation here he's been working up in the zone typically you look for guys to get that ground ball see if he adjusts on this next pitch snap throw to first and he's back in standing here comes a pitch on the ground two ball Bo it but plenty of time to recover and that's the second out that's a good piece of hitting right there the job was to move the runner up and give your team a chance to score the go-ahead Run that's exactly what happen so you better believe your teammates are happy with you after that advat and now it's Julio Rodriguez in there at the knees it's old and [Applause] one inside corner and that's called a strike and a bat like this is almost over as it begins in this situation you have no idea what the next pitch is going to be you're just got to hope that you can make contact got it by him for the K I think the key is arm action on the change up when you can sell it like a fast ball you drop the velocity you get the swing and mess and you walk off the field back here with my pal singi and our pitcher in this game Luis Castillo what do you have on him singi well I'm interested to see how he utilizes his Sinker to this lineup boo you know it's not necessarily his go-to primary pitch but he does mix it in when he needs it he's just got to make sure that it's not flat otherwise it's going to get hit hard so look for him to throw it up there when he needs a big double play a ground ball something like that to get out of an inning change it up for a hitter also get those hitters looking down so that it opens up the top of the strike zone especially late in and it back Castillo multi-time Allstar he features a fouram fast ball a slider a sinker and he works in a change up and the rhander [Music] deals hard hit left side and he's safe at first some strange defense there really good swing right there he got a pitch that he knew he could handle allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws Brent Rooker stands in now and watches strike one [Applause] outside low and one and one runner at first with no outs [Applause] here swings and blasts one deep to left Center that's back there pulls it in on the warning [Applause] track and time now to Che out the A's lineup this is JJ blade popped up to the left into foul ground he's got it and there's two away well that was a the pitch you got to crush unbelievable that he missed it right there and I'm telling you he is going to be frustrating with himself until his next at bat here's Miguel and duar first offering and it just misses butler off of first with two away [Applause] pitch misses there ball two that one catches the corner for a strike fouls one off two and two two outs ripped on a line that's a base hit lead Runner touches second headed for third and now they'll have Runners on the corners with two away well they call that an advantage count for a reason you're so much more likely to get something you can handle just a solid swing right there caught it out front and ripped it into the outfield for the base hit those always feel great so two down and now Shay langers and that one a little below the knees and that's ball one two on two outs and another ball could be some action here on this next pitch couple Runners on probably a challenge pitch coming good hitters count the 2-0 just missed Bo he never moved cuz he never had time to but that kind of velocity you'd prefer that pitcher work [Applause] away and the righty deals and that's Ball Four oh that sets up a really big at bat in this game these are the moments when everyone in the stadium gets really locked in so here's Brown at the [Applause] plate that one ripped but foul [Applause] left hand batter Waits fouled off he was late that one inside now one and two O2 fast ball way out of the Zone I think he's trying to speed him up got to stay back off speed's probably coming next pitch misses inside and it's two and two man oh man I don't know how you take that pitch that's as close as it gets that one off the mark and now it's three and two definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside really think the outer half is [Applause] open right-hander Kick deals here's a highfly ball out to Center Rodriguez settles under it makes the grab and that's the inning A's threatened but leave him loaded scoreless after one back in Oakland all set for the start of the inning and stepping in for the Mariners Justin [Applause] Turner as the Lefty gets to work and that's off the Inside Edge ball one Turner a guy with great back to ball skill on the ground to Third and that one handled fires across the diamond and quickly one away in the second the batter now Jorge palano drilled out towards left center field that's well struck that one Ops against the fence he's in at second with a one out double went up there looking to be aggressive and got something he could handle that pretty much split the Zone down the middle and those are the ones where you got to make them pay runner in scoring position now and a good opportunity to push across the first run the ball game one out runner at second and now for Seattle Luke rley fast ball in for a strike one one one out and a runner at second here at the top of the second next offering way upstairs Rusty Valentine calling balls and Strikes book something I hear from hitters about Valentine is they know they don't have to protect off the plate too much in two strike counts and that can be a big deal in terms of your confidence and seeing some pitches in that at bat the one- one is fouled [Applause] off man it's second that's off the mark two and two and that one almost hit him straighten him up a little bit one out and a runner at second foul we'll see another payoff pitch ground ball left side and that's just foul and a pitch that one ripped and makes the grab grounder tags it second and he moves up to third now two [Applause] away here's d more and this is a big opportunity for him to pick up his teammate right [Applause] here gell to First third out Mariners leave one we'll go to the bottom of the second no score and we're back here's the second baseman Zack gof he's someone that you might not describe as having Elite level speed but he can absolutely move and it is a factor in his game first pitch doesn't find the Zone Bo this guy's definitely a plus Runner but what i' love about him is that he goes all out every single time never takes a break it's guys like that even though they don't have the Elite Speed the fact that they're consistent with it they make moves on the base pack righty to the plate that Clips the corner down the line roess sizing this one up he's got it and there's one away outstanding catch right there and I love the commitment that he showed he knew that the wall was close but was determined to make that catch and a nice calculation of just how much room he had to try to minimize that contact on the ground sneaks through base hit so they get a man aboard with a one out [Applause] single here's the short stop at the play Jacob Wilson [Applause] the short stop takes the ball the only adjustment he needs to make is his Target if you aim at the outside corner that slider's going to end up way off the plate perhaps look a little more down the middle and you get it right where you want it Castillo keeping him close and a pitch that one the other way off balance feed there's one not in time at first it's a fielder's choice so the batting order turns over Lawrence Butler now at the plate that one misses and it's w to [Applause] know right side hard hit and that is the inning the A's strand one will move to the third with no score on of the third inning leading off Josh Roos Roos in his fourth year hitting ninth in today's lineup and they went out and made a trade for him last season just missed on the ground to third throw on to brown one up one [Applause] down it was a bang bang play at first singy so let's take another look at the throw that made it possible to get the out no doubt that 85 mph heater was the difference on this play according to stat cast and it looked like a blur going across the infield from up here and they just got the out so the lineup flips over and now it's Victor robless up to hit first time up was a pop out and that is in for a strike and it's O and one swing in a [Applause] Miss next pitch misses and it's one and two it's a good take swing and a line drive slicing into right field huls it in for the out and there's two [Applause] away now the number two hitter Randy a roara as a batter he's known for performing better in these night games he might start two for two in this one first pitch misses and it goes just foul next offering is in for a [Applause] strike and here it comes swings and misses and it's a three up three down inning and one two three Goen Mariners and we are still scoreless bottom of the inning now the A's designated hitter Brent Rooker the wi of the pitch the bit behind with that swing it's strike one well that's today's style of baseball right there right big time V on the bump and Big Time pop at the plate that one fouled [Applause] off well struck right field and that one hops the wall makes the turn and heads for second and he's into scoring position with a leadoff double maybe a chance for our first run here I'm sure he feels really good about that one nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line you know hitters it takes so many reps in the cages working on going to the opposite field and it doesn't always translate into the game but right there it did and he did it [Applause] perfectly so digging in JJ B popped out in foul ground first time through that Clips a corner well here's a good opportunity in this inning to get on the scoreboard after that leadoff hit and hardly order coming up right behind them this is where they need to get [Applause] going man it's second that breaking ball is in for a strike and quickly it is nothing in two kick sandio he goes down looking well definitely a borderline pitch right there and he didn't look too convinced as he headed back to the Dugout you know those are tough ones to let go as a hitter but with the human umpire calling balls and Strikes it's always going to be on you to protect yourself with two strikes and next will be the cleanup hitter Miguel andar and he's already singled in this game just missed next offering in there for a strike one ball one strike the A's looking to strike first here in the last half of the Third that one ripped left field a r Ro Arena raging back towards the wall and it hits the fence well done drives in the Run anytime you smoke a ball off the wall you kind of think about what it could have been but obviously you have to be happy with that result maned second with one away and now a chance for Shay langers first pitch and he just [Music] misses on duar over it second one down [Applause] swings and misses and it's one and one and there's a ball wouldn't chase that time [Applause] right through there for a strike and boy that was the pitch 3-1 you want to be really aggressive on the fast ball outside and that is ball four oh you know this guy wants to swing it but he's showing some good patience in this one it's the second time he's taken ball four so one out with two aboard Seth Brown up next for the A's 0 for one with a fly out to Center foul ball [Applause] there two on one out comes up empty that's strike two knowing that the pitcher wants a ground ball double play opportunity here you've got to lay off pitches down in the zone right there swinging at that pitch that's a no no left-and hitter Waits on the ground could be two there's one throw sails over his headed first and this Ball's going to wind up out of play so a big time costly mistake there next up for the A's Zack gell he's over for one [Applause] [Applause] here's a swing and a drive left field and he knew it a gigantic blast it's 4 nothing he only needed one swing to square it up not wasting any time in that at bat boo aggressive and it paid off [Applause] that one was a hanger and pitchers typically don't get away with making a mistake like that and right there he made him pay two outs nobody on now the third baseman [Applause] hard hit to Third and they're happy to just get off the field after that frame so they move out in front after a 4run out burst three Innings complete it's the Athletics four and the Mariners nothing back here in the East Bay new inning getting started and now the switch it and catcher Cal righ the pitch and there's a foul ball well these Mariners just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game so many of their outs have come from weak contact on pitches they're chasing outside of the strike zone you can't do much of anything with those locations and that's been true again today kicks and fires [Applause] that one fouled off two and two and as a pitcher when the hitters are swinging at everything you feel no need to challenge inside the zone you just keep working the corners and expand now this ball is well hit this one's got a chance and that one is off the wall safe at second with a leadoff double well patience and discipline paid off right there as he got into an advantage count just a cookie down the middle I mean those are the ones you dream about ones in the cage you're just hoping you get in the ball game right down the middle not a whole lot of velocity right on top of it could be a chance here for them to start clawing back into this ball game here's the center fielder Julio Rodriguez swing and this one's blasted it's got a chance leaps at the wall but can't haul it in around third the the relay to the plate and he's out that really hurts right there this is no time to gamble when you're down in the ball game you got to be sure if you're going to advance a run or even try to score right there that you're going to be safe just a poor decision here's Justin Turner 0 for one so far that to right Butler puts it away for the out to down number and up next for Seattle Jorge palano doubled his first time [Applause] up that's in there that's strike one the Athletics leading by four top half of inning number four next one misses and it's a ball and a strike [Applause] the pitch inside almost got him man on second two down knocks that one away and will do it [Applause] again this one kicks away a little as he can't squeeze SE it to third tag got him they don't come much closer than that bang bang play to end the [Applause] inning and welcome back to the ballpark and now Jacob Wilson Castillo back to work Line Drive caught it's never fun going back to the Dugout after hitting a line drive that finds a glove but you will get some high fives you know when you make great contact you feel like you've done everything right but in this game of baseball not everything is in your control back to the top of the lineup digging in for Oakland Lawrence Butler first offering and adjust misses one out base is empty swing and a miss strike one instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended tied him up a little bit slightly up slightly in that misses and a count two and [Applause] one just missed [Applause] 3-1 and he couldn't come up with it well he tried to nibble right there and just missed his spot hitter didn't offer at it now he has somebody to worry about over at first one gone runner at first Brent Rooker getting ready to hit one for [Applause] two and that one fouled off Butler over at first with one away and that one sliced [Music] foul righty delivers liner base hit they fired in quickly so it's first and second with only one away couple of hits in a row for for here showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way didn't get jumpy didn't try to pull the ball he' let it get deep took the barrel right to it and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit now a chance for JJ Bay rolled softly but that goes foul the A's treding to break this one open we're here in the bottom of the fourth [Applause] and that's off the Inside Edge and now it's even one and one some activity in the Mariners Bullpen a right-hander is up and throwing two on one out on the ground a short could be two more to Second and that's two one hit one left we're headed to the fifth it's the Athletics four and the Mariners nothing back in Oakland top five John shabi with Chris Singleton and leading it off PGE palano the pitch there's the strike well these Mariners looking to string together better at bats when they have Runners on but it just hasn't happened for them yet they only have one hit with runners in scoring position so a lot of squandered opportunities it's tough because those are moments you just can't get back and now the Lefty swing and a miss pulled the string on the change up he's really good hitting the baseball the other way so credit the pitcher for having him out in front of that pitch clearly he had him fool Luke rley up next for the Mariners just a bit tardy there not sure if he had a hard time picking it up out of the hand or if he was sitting off speed and a foul [Applause] ball clearly hoping he could get a swing and Miss on that but doesn't P The Hitter with that breaking ball nice job just couldn't keep it fair at the belt and fires foul ball it stays nothing in two stays alive and the pitch swing and a pop up in foul ground brings it in and there's two down MO two outs Bas is empty and stepping in for the Mariners Dylan Moore he's 0 for one [Applause] the short stop takes the ball two out space is empty next offering upstairs well usually a high level of confidence when you're facing a young pitcher out there on the mound in this situation ahead 2 has put himself in a really good spot two down nobody on in the air right field Butler going back on this one drops it into the glove and that is that we head to the bottom of the fifth so here's the cleanup hitter for Oakland Miguel andar [Applause] andar the line in the pitch he swings and fouls one off you know these Athletics doing a good job of putting the ball into play and that makes things more challenging on the defensive side one thing that really stands out to me is how they've only struck out one time that's good discipline right there and on top of it they're producing more than a hit per inning fought off foul all those numbers mean this offense is really making the defense work by just putting the ball into play Anything Can Happen at that point out towards left Center and that'll fall for a base hit and the lead off man aboard hitting is really easy for some guys one thing that I can see already his Bat stays in the Zone on plane for an extended period of time and guys like that they have a high contact rate and they have more barrels because of that bat being on plane and even when you don't get it great it's still hit hard enough to dunk something in like that in front of the center fielder so out of the bullpen for the Mariners number 59 still pretty early in the ball game so this Bullpen has some work ahead of him best case scenario might be if he can come in here and get several quick outs kind of bridge the gap that starter left for him striding to the plate now for Oakland Shay langers [Applause] that just misses one and0 just off the Inside Edge right-handed reliever close but call the ball ball three so definitely a little wild right out of the gate well it could be a little tough coming from the bullpen mound to this mound but you've got to find a way to get ahead in the count quickly he hasn't we'll see how this at bat turns [Music] out the 3-1 swing and a ball hit out towards left center field makes the catch for the out that was a good pitch to hit right down the heart of the plate had pretty good timing on it just got underneath it a little bit and popped it up man it first next to hit Seth [Applause] Brown and the first pitch misses for ball one on duar the base runner at first with one out next offering in there for a strike and the count one and one the pitch smoked to right center and this one's going to go out of here a massive home run it's six nothing that one just sounded different and might have been the loudest moment yet man my ears are ringing I can feel that swing from the [Applause] booth High Velocity up and in is just such a difficult location for the hitter but this time he pulls the hands tight to the body gets through this pitch what conviction in that swing awesome job at the plate face is empty one away Zack gell digs in now he's already homered here in this one and that's outside and that's ball one one down base is empty outside and that's ball two [Applause] fouled off left side and a two- one on the way and a foul ball comes the two two the punch out there two away that was a tough slid right there he couldn't get a piece of it just to try to keep the bad alive and hitters will tell you that slider when a guy is able to really tunnel the pitch where it looks like a fast and then late has a really good bite so tough to lay off of because you've made the decision you don't want to get beat by a fast ball and then you swing and you miss you go back to the Dugout shaking your head that's in for a [Applause] strike swings through that one out in front that time well he went inside a couple of times and now outside hitter's not exactly sure where to look for this next pitch goes down swinging for the strike out slider got him for strike three but two come across to score in the inning courtesy of this two run Homer as the A's are on top you're dialed into the show back here in the East Bay here's Josh Roos clearly down in this ball game and you can't look at the deficit and try to get it all back in one swing it's got to come one at bad at a time and even shrink it down smaller pitch to pitch make that guy on the mound work to get you out oh this guy on the Mountain's done a lot better than we would have expected and the hitters just don't seem to have the right game plan they're taking too many mistake pitches for C strikes here comes a pitch that's hard hit in the line no trouble here puts it away for the out one down here's Victor roblas this is a guy you got to keep an eye on when he digs in definitely been known to drop a drag bunt from time to time and he's pretty good at it Chris yeah and he creates a sense of urgency for the defense because of the speed because of the ability to put down that BN one down base is empty that one fouled off now you see even Sluggers from time to time try and use the bunt really as a way to beat the shift the one one and a swinging a Miss there the Athletics up big in this one and we're the top half of the sixth got him swinging oh nothing too fancy on the strikeout pitch right there just a low 90s fast ball and I'm not sure he was trying to challenge him but that's pretty much what happened very hitable location but he found a way to just get it by him two outs Bas is empty Randy a Ros Arena up next for the Mariners swing and a miss strike one a Ros Arena goes 5' 11 in 185 lbs and he's a former Rookie of the Year foul ball and a pitch out one way inside and a pop off right side foul territory Brown makes the catch and that'll do it so another good inning for for him on the mound six shut out Innings now it's the A6 and the Mariners nothing bottom of the six now here is Jacob wilsonon and the right hter back to work just off the outside edge and that that is ball [Applause] one now One Missed left field a r roara moving under it brings it in and there's one down just pulled off of it a little bit right there that front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed if he does that he's going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some Authority instead of a fly out to left Butler batting with one down takes the strike base is empty one away here in the bottom of the sixth swing and a ball popped up Roos under this one caral it out number two two the BR R now it's the DH Brent Rooker he's a guy who does it all with the lack of contact in today's game this guy hits for contact so he delivers average but there's on Bas and slugging too fouled back our way and that's out of play Early in the count you have to be real careful because of that power but then if this hitter gets a striker or two on him he's still very comfortable and because he has the ability to get the barrel to the baseball he's a threat deep into the count as well that misses one and two the count gets a piece there we'll do it again and that one hammered Rodriguez going back and brings it in at the wall so no runs no hits no errors and no one left we're through six full it's the A6 and the Mariners nothing and we're back we go to the top of the seventh now the Mariners catcher Cal [Music] Raleigh as the Lefty gets to work and first offering is fouled [Applause] off and here it comes swinging a foul straight back up the middle oh nice play from his knees the throw nicely done for the out this defense came to play tonight we're seeing some awesome pitching but a huge part of this shutout so far has been the defense making great plays like that behind their pitcher they feed off of one another make great pitches make great plays defensively and now the center fielder Julio Rodriguez and that gets the inside corner for a strike I really like how he's been attacking hitters early in at bats he's thrown strikes on the first pitch to over 70% of the guys he's faced in this one Bas is empty one away here in the top half of inning number seven pitches in there o and two quickly into an 02 count both pitches were down in the zone I think you set your sights a little bit higher because you'll have a tendency to chase if you look down in that area and that one finds its way through so a man aboard now with one Away really nice job staying up the Middle with his approach he didn't try to do too much with the pitch just shot it through the infield here's Turner [Applause] now highfly ball out to center field Le sizes this one up they got it for out number two the B number so man aboard Jorge palano up next for the Mariners three pitch strikeout last time up got to put up more of a fight in this one this one in the air center field gets under it brings it in for the third [Applause] out one left for Seattle they still find themselves down Z [Music] zip and welcome back to the ballpark here's the center fielder JJ bade and the pitch on the corner for a strike activity in the bullpen Austin both appears to be getting ready for manager Scott service spire also throwing and he deals right side and foul ball one two now inside just missed really good take especially with two [Applause] strikes out towards right center field lays out but he can't squeeze it into second easily with a lead off double great Hands On That Swing to take the inside pitch and drive it into the gap for the double it's easy to spin off a pitch like like that boo and can pull that thing foul but that was perfect next up for the A's Miguel and duar three for three with two singles and a double swinging a foul over the screen and back out of play rander kicks deals this to third Roos slings it across and one away in the bottom of the seven cat langers and here's the catcher Shay langers it's interesting he plays kind of a a power spot defensively but runs pretty well so when you're looking at that position you're not expecting someone that has maybe above average speed but he does and I think that skill set really upgrades the position because when you have that kind of speed it makes the whole team that much better swing and a ground ball up the middle that's a base hit around third he'll score it's seven to nothing couldn't have timed it up any better than that couldn't get any air under it but he smoked that ball back up the middle timing was just perfect got great wood on it and there's just no chance for the infielders with how hard he hit it Seth Brown the next to hit he's already homered in this game that Clips The Zone and that strike one what about him playing another position on defense one that would require a little more range absolutely and I think if push came to shove where they had to make a a move during a game he'd surprise a lot of people you might even be able to put him in center field that's off the mark and to count even one and [Applause] one swing and a liner foul off to the right the onew on the ground right side four six three it's a double play and that'll do it for the inning so it's one run on two hits no errors and no one left we look ahead to inning number eight it's the A7 and the Mariners nothing back in Oakland ready to begin the eighth and now for Seattle Lukey Lukey the pitch and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter Oakland's Bullpen has some movement Grant hullman getting ready to go Harris getting cranked up as well left-and hitter Waits swing and a miss and that's strike two I think he was sitting off speed there missed with a change up now one and two keeps the it back going with a foul ball he's mixing his pitches really well late on that fast ball after seeing the change up see if he can Elevate one I think if he does he'll get the swing and miss [Applause] and they'll do it again leftand batter waights fights it off he'll see [Music] another foul ball still a one and two count gets a piece and stays alive kicks andal and that's downstairs and [Applause] outside still two and two after the foul ball that one blasted deep to right that's back and that one hops the wall and that's a leadoff double well wore him down after an extended plate appearance it ends with a knock at that point in a bat for hitter when you've seen that many pitches you've gotten a look you fouled off pitches so the confidence level is Extreme high and it seems like when you go that deep into it a bat The Hitter usually comes out on top hit hard on the ground to short to third tag got him well he's doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball good [Applause] execution man at first here's the third baseman Josh RW that one finds the Zone it's 0 and one Moore leads off first with one away next offering in there for a strike and it's nothing in two the pitch double play by ball to Second there's one on the first double play and that's the inning totally dominant on the mound as he's threw eight without surrendering a run it's the A7 and the Mariners nothing a new arm into the game the righty Austin both well they need someone to stop the bleeding and keep the score right where it is seems like a tough task today with the way this lineup is swinging it now it's the second baseman Zack gell one for three and a pitch right through there for a strike next offering in there for a strike no balls two strikes and ball one the pitch and another [Applause] ball 3-2 battling here as he fouls it [Applause] away and the right-hander deals spoils the two- strike pitch and he'll see another on the ground to third slings to first he made the pitcher earned that out after a long at bat now the third baseman first offering misses badly for ball one action in the bullpen for Seattle Trent Thornton appears to be getting loose the A's up big in this one here the bottom half of the eighth inning in for a strike and
